Do you have a holy grail miniature? @ 2019/01/13 09:02:24

As I was surfing ebay looking at various out of print sculpts, I got to wondering if other people have holy grail miniatures they're looking for their collections. By which I guess I mean something that's not just expensive, but whose finding requires luck and effort, a proper quest.

I have a few that would qualify, but the 40k piece that qualifies the best is none other than the Thunderhawk Gunship. Not the Forge World one. The metal one. It's nearly impossible to assemble and very hard to come by. But it's such a wonderfully premium piece of GW history. It came in a wooden box with little aquila corner braces, and even a lock on the lid. I'd love to own it. And I would build the damn thing, which I take it was very seldom done (most of the ones I've ever seen for sale have been untouched in box). It'd be hard and would take half a dozen tubes of epoxy, but I would enjoy the challenge.

For non-GW pieces, there is, I suppose, the original Dreamforge Leviathan: http://www.coolminiornot.com/66848. They were on the market for a very short time, before, it was rumored, GW sent out a "cease & desist" notification. Again, it'd be a wonderful project, mostly to superdetail the thing. You could even fit it with LEDs all over the place and wire up a bluetooth speaker to rickroll your opponents as required.

Currently my 'holy grail' piece would be the valhallan kneeling trooper with boltgun that came with BL lone wolf diaroma kit.

For me it's the giant forgeworld stone troll.
Took a break from the game while it was being sold and only saw it for the first time once it was OOP.

Seen 2 on eBay since then, both terrible recasts.

Not sure what it is about the model, I just really wanted one so I'm always looking for them.

Other than that, it's just forumware 30k salamanders stuff lol.
Picked up vulkan just fine, but trying to find pyroclasts and fire drakes is close to impossible.
Someone on eBay has them, but they are insanely bad recasts and reassemble blobs rather than models.

Probably more of the inquisitor range, especially the 54mm scale genestealer and hybrid conversion parts. But the genestealer alone regularly sells for £80 on eBay and I can’t spring to that for one miniature. Damn thing was only available through GW mail order for three months originally, it was OOP by the time I knew of it.

For me it's the UD-4L Cheyenne Dropship from Aliens - the model kit that was released just after the movie came out. I didn't have the money to get it at the time, and now when it shows up on e-bay, it's just too expensive to consider.

Over the years I've had many Holy Grail miniatures, most of which I've been lucky enough to get hold of.

The Ilyad barabarians, the John Blanche inspired range of 54mm figures that GW made (that I have forgotten the name of ), The Rackham Mid-Nor range.

Currently my holy grail figure is the original 54mm Smog 1888 Opium Dragon.

Any of those dioramas is incredibly rare to see for sale. I've never even seen a complete example of each, nevermind a painted one.

Femme Militant.

Had a few- Sergeant Centurius, which I now own and is currently serving as a Plague Marine in my DG army. The Warmachine 10th anniversary diorama. Had to fight tooth and nail to get that. Not exactly limited, but the metal Teddy mini for Malifaux. Vastly superior to any that succeeded it and almost never appeared on eBay, eventually one did for the right price last year and I snapped him up. The GF9 Zuggtmoy figure (didn't even know of this thing's existence until I saw one on r/minipainting and it was long OOP and only had a limited run of 1000 or something)- luckily I found it on Noble Knight Games, these guys are great for OOP stuff and grabbed it asap. She's now a Daemon Princess in the DG.

Although I currently don't have it in my hands(yet!) I finally snapped up Syko Volsturus from Confrontation on eBay yesterday. Weird thing is, I'd been chasing this mini for a while for a Fabius Bile conversion (yes, I'm going to chop him up. Come at me. ) and the exact same auction I won yesterday I lost over Christmas as I was talking to a customer at work when it ended. As luck would have it it appeared to have been relisted maybe when the original winner saw it was damaged or something.

Current gaming white whale (and has been for some time) is the Helldorado Gourmande demons. You just don't see them on the second-hand market and when they are they're asking exorbitant prices. The weird thing is, I owned them back when the game was not OOP and converted them to be the mouth and bum of my GUO. Now I want them again and simply cannot find them.

Cherubael from inquisitor. Found one on a site last year but it kept getting refunded when I purchased so I assume it was out of stock.

I have some 1st edition white plastic marines with bayonets that are imperial as they have aquilla's.
I also know someone with first edition dark eldar reivers.
I know not quite as good as the others on this list but i hadn't even heard of those marines existing on google and all that guy reivers are some of the last in the country so?

I got super lucky when I found mine. A guy was selling three boxes of inquisitor, and Cherubael was in there. You had to look closely at the pics to see it.

That reminds me of another conversion I've been wanting to make for ages, turning Lens Mendkenn into a Harlequin Solitaire. Alas, it's not an easy one to find.

For me those are Falcon type II and Wave Serpent type II forge world upgrade kits. I've been absent from hobby while they were available and they are what make Eldar grav tanks models actually working aesthetically for me. Currently only basic back fin for Falcon chasis can be obtained through Warp Hunter model, but there is no way to get any other part from those kits... Unfortunately Forge World won't bring back those kits (I got direct answer for this) and I have never saw either a kit or even a modified whole model for sale on Ebay or anywhere else...

You're welcome. Unfortunately seller has some bizarre excluded countries list and doesn't ship to Poland, otherwise I would buy it as it is indeed a great basis for either Solitaire or Great Harlequin, exactly what I was looking for.

The Forge World Thunderbolt pilot. It pops up from time to time, as an overly expensive auction or an obvious recast, lovely model that was sadly an event only model IIRC.

I do, but I actually own mine - just afraid to try to paint it. My all-time favourite Warhammer Fantasy sculpt is this fella:

Mordheim Freelance Knight

For my birthday last year, my friend sent me one new in blister...so I own it. It's even metal, meaning I could strip it if I feth it up, but it's just nerve wracking and I haven't been playing Mordheim or anything fantasy in a while.

Ye gods! You've just reminded me. I had that model (and the Ork Pilot, who I know I still have as he is a Nob in my Ork army), but for the life of me I don't know where he is. Dunno if he is in a case somewhere or lost in the warp like my FW Slann mini.

Navarro, what happened to your Rock Golem (and others) that were on Otherworld's site? They seem to have just vanished. A lot of them were on my to buy list for ages and I'd love to know what happened if you're allowed to say, or even if they're for sale elsewhere.

My holy grails for Fantasy and 40K were Archaon on foot and the alternate sculpt Emperor’s Champion, two-handing his Black Sword. I have both, tracked them both down over time. The newest “I must have this model” was the Slaanesh Noise Marine released at Christmas, which my wife had tucked under the tree for me! So I’ve got all my over-time treasures.

I've collected quite a few bits and pieces over the years which are quite rare.

I've got some of the original Phoenix Wargames Clubs female Cadians. A metal Maximilian Weisseman from Forgeworld. A full set of the true scale 'Iron Armour' marines made by [Warforge? Warsmith?] Studios in the week before they got C&D'd.A bunch of the Chapterhouse True Scale marines. That sort of thing.

I managed to get one at Salute when it was available, but it cost me a fortune - I ended up buying a Thunderbolt too. At the moment, it's the Tyranid hiveship recycling "squig":
http://www.solegends.com/citcat1992/cat1992p399tyrwarriors-00.htm
("big squig 2")

to complete my 1st edition Tyranids collection. That and some odds and ends to complete a few Inquisitor models.

These fine fellows.

In a time when GW basically didn't make AdMech miniatures, and the closest was the metal Enginseer, these were the things I wanted the most. I think they're wonderful miniatures.

Eventually got a full set a few years back.

For a while mine was the Confrontation Dragon Titan.

Then I basically stole it off a guy in Canada who had no idea what he had.

For GW stuff, I'm not sure I have a grail mini. I haven't played long enough to have nostalgia for the old stuff. At this point my grail is a damn Slaughterbrute, which I can't find anywhere. Or Varangaurd for a reasonable price.

Interesting question, though I like the answers. I'm not actually chasing any models at the moment, as the stuff that I'm recurringly interested in keeps popping up on eBay whenever I peek around. I guess my tastes aren't niche enough, or my luck is good enough to get what I really want at a reasonable enough price. .

Mine was more of an army. Over the years I've finally pieced together a decent 60 man (give or take) strong Mordian force, mostly with actual Mordians, though I do have a few victoria minis splashed in there because I don't want to have to cut pewter to make plasma gunners.

Yep. that's the one. Mine still has a laspistol. Not that she can take a laspistol, of course, because No Model No Rules, but I always put it down to her just being an exceptionally good shot.
I have a whole bunch of rogue trader stuff knocking around too, but I don't think any of it's particularly "Rare" at this point.
I used to have a whole Warhammer Fantasy Dogs of War army, that had all sorts of limited edition stuff in it, but I gave in and sold it all when GW blew up the setting and them with it.

Thanks! My memory is terrible these days!

It's not that the sculpts were technically amazing, they didn't have the anatomical perfection of something by JAG or Alan C, but they, more than any other figures, captured the art of Blanche perfectly.

Another holy grail model that I picked up recently deserves a mention, the Forge Word Incarnate Elemental of Beasts. It was only available for a relatively small window (presumably something to do with the molds?), so any time that it pops up on ebay it goes for silly money.

I was fortunate enough to get it for cheap because the seller's listing made no mention of it in the title!

I'm not sure I really have a "holy grail" miniature. There are certainly lots of things I want, but nothing I truly feel I need in order to make my collection "complete", so to speak. I suppose I would say a Thunderhawk, as an iconic centerpiece model of my space marine army, would be one (particularly the old metal one, like the OP mentioned). Another one would be a customized Fulgrim to match the alternative sculpt that Forgeworld never released.

Up until recently, it was the Marauder Miniatures giant, for less than the stupid amounts that I see people asking for it. Managed to snag one last month for $40. Still would like to get an Armorcast Gargant and a Phantom titan.

Holy Grail Mini's?

Let's see for Battletech:
Battledroids Archer, BattleAx, Battlemaster, Marauders (both with oval and hex bases), the Behemoth (Yes.. the one that looks like the Macross MAC II), Falcon, Bombardier, Cestus, Crossbow, Fire Bee, Gladiator, Hornet, Locust, Rifleman, Vulcan, Wolverine, Demolisher, Hunter, Striker and Vedettes. I am missing a few of the original items...

All of the designated Unseen 'mechs and LAM's from the 3025 TRO's...

As for 40k... the female Commissar (I think I have a second one floating about somewhere)... Gaunt's Ghosts... the Rogue Trader Harlequin set, complete with Solitaire (a friend of mine traded me that for my Mechanicus I was selling)...

I am sure I have a few other things floating about...

Some of mine that come to mind:

Rogue Trader Tyranid Warrior (metal version of the old "turkey" plastic Warriors, would make a nice Prime for my plastic turkey!).

More Tyranids Armorcast (got my first one last year in the Exocrine, wouldn't mind one or two more for variety and nostalgia ).

Forgeworld Incarnate Elemental of Flame (with the death of Fantasy I'm not actively looking for it, but maybe one day I'll try to get one).

And one I managed to get for cheap a few years ago; the Empire Bright Wizard from the army box

As for me.. my cherished figure has already been mentioned.. Chaos Toilet in blister.

I don't think GW will ever reissue this miniature and don't ever plan to use it in a game.

Many of mine are in my Nurgle army... I have all (ALL! MUAHAHAHAH that cost a bit) the Nurgle champions, some of which I still need to paint. I'm missing a one or two of the original Plaguebearers.

I've accrued other rarities over the years - several FW event only models, a 1991 Games Day Marine Captain (I bought two that day, one got sold about 15 years ago, the other I still have) this one: http://www.solegends.com/citle1990/early90s/le04smcaptain/index.htm

What else? Few more GD models.

If there's anything I'm after, it's probably those missing Plaguebearers, or more GUO bits...

The early 90s Screamer Killer. Its sheer badassery could not be contained...

I had one back in the day and painted him in Genestealer blue'n'purple. Because the army list was only in an issue of White Dwarf, my mates were taken by surprise when I plonked him on the table. He was just so outlandishly brutal in appearance and close combat there was always giggling whenever it took out a Rhino or an entire squad of Space Marines...

...ah, good times! Its hoping for too much, but a Noise marine-style redeux would be welcome.

Can't call it a 'holy grail' mini, since it's not all that special or important, just rare, but, Mork's trousers, I would like to have the Forgeworld Ork Traktor. It was basically an old wartrakk model with a resin sled for towing an ork plane (since none of them had landing gear).

Totally unimportant, but basically the only GW Ork model I don't have that I want. Even if it did pop up on eBay, I don't know if I could be bothered to pay that much for it, as it's so bloody pointless.

I would also like to get the FW Epic Steam Gargant and the FW Epic Gargantuan Squiggoth, but they aren't really my Holy Grails. I would just like to have each without paying stupid money for them.

It was a custom sculpted "classic" Necron Lord.

This was back in the early to mid 2000s - I saw it on Ebay, and didn't jump on it.

It was expensive. Never saw anything like it ever again.

He was big - almost Nagash sized.

I remember is that it had the old classic scarabs sculpted on the base by his feet.

Other than that, it was just a very large classic Necron Lord, holding a staff.

I made a post ten years ago... and no one knew what I was talking about, even then:

There are 2 minis that I desperately wanted and that were sort of rare; I am pleased to say that I have acquired, built, and painted them both.

The 2002 Necron Lord:
Spoiler:

I am trying to get every Necron lord that was ever released, and I think I got them all, except the very first Egyptian-style one, because I think it's very ugly.

What made this one hard wasn't that it was hard to find, so much as I wanted it fairly cheap: you see them all the time on ebay for around $50, but sometimes you see one for about $10 from someone who doesn't realize it's rare.

After looking for about a year or so I realized I was being very silly because I make good money now and that's a stupid-ass hill to die on, so I bought one for $35; and then immediately desecrated it by adding horns to him to boot.

Ork Nob with Banna:
Spoiler:

This one actually WAS hard to find; it had been re-released in Failcast but lol obviously I wasn't buying that. I wanted the original metal one, and I did eventually find it after looking for about 6 months or so. In retrospect I sort of wish I had gotten the failcast one and fixed whatever odious nonsense came with it; turns out this mini is hideously balanced and every time it falls over, the banner breaks ever though I pinned it carefully.
Be careful what you wish for, you might get it I guess.

The final "mini" that I want and has ever elduded me is the original FW Battle Fortress.

Spoiler:

I scratchbuilt a rendition of it, but it really wasn't the same.

I still want that original Battle Fortress.

For me it's the new Khornate dragon from FW.

The rider looks like utter dog poop, but I would swap him out and convert a 40k version. I created a character a while ago who rides a Khornate dragon but never finished the model, so this would be a pretty slick way of accomplishing that dream.

Maybe. One day.

I actually got one of my Holy Grail minis a while back, it was Ashoka from Hell Dorado. Been wanting it for years and could never find one, even on Ebay. Finally found one, so I jumped on it. It had to ship all the way from the Ukraine, so it took more than a month to get to me. Really nice resin figure, thought it might have been a recast at first, but frankly in this situation didn't care.

NOT my mini, but until I can get a decent photo to happen, it gives a good look at the figure.

I've heard that it was an official mini and a studio conversion, but when WD did their bit on the battle for Macragge I saw a Saul Invictus (Ultramarine 1st company captain) that I fell in love with.

From what I remember there was a captain in terminator armor that was similar in pose but used a power sword instead of fist and a storm bolter instead of the twin-linked plasma pistol.

I'm pretty sure all of the Helldorado minis were metal. The fact that you got it from Ukraine is also a bit of a red flag, as it's home to Legendarion & his Cadwallon recasting factory.

I remember that figure, it is most definitely the metal Terminator Captain converted to have a plastic Marine power fist and Captain Invictus' plasma blaster (made from two plasma pistols). I thought about making one myself, as I have two of those Captains.

They don't advertise it, but yeah in all reality it is, I got a hold of the inquisitor Eisenhorn gang of 5(Eisenhorn with staff(OOP), distaff, recording old guy, police old style(OOP), Ravenor prior to injury(OOP)).

Nope. They got a C&D for certain designs, lots of stuff that pre-dates or was contemporary with those is still available.

Haha yeah it's a pretty basic model, I'd like to try building both that pattern of drop pod and an improved model of the epicast model as well which I think is based off the original round Epic model.

Some nice model of a 40k Battleship, ideally a whole fleet based on my fan lore. A battleship, a dozen cruisers, and a horde or escorts.

I really prefer the Chaos Mammoth to the stupid tentacled spikebeasts GW gave Chaos. It's such a comparatively subdued design.

Rather annoyingly, I have some of my holy grail minis in my sights in ebay right now and I'd love to talk about them but I really don't want anyone else to notice the auctions right now so I actually have a chance at getting them at below their current inflated market value. :-P

The Battle Of The Five Armies game. I wish I'd bought it whilst GW still stocked the specialist games, I just can't justify the resale prices now.

(I can probably re-make it for half the price using something like Kallistra 10mm fantasy, to be fair.)

The Armorcast Baneblade and/or Shadowsword. They're crude and ugly, but I'd love to convert one to a more modern aesthetic.

Ah, the Mission Dreadnought "Super Dreadnought"( he was a "MK 8" or something ). Which came with a second normal size dreadnought. He was ridiculously powerful and quite a large gaming piece. The standard dreadnought was amazing enough, but that dude...omg, hes was like overkill!

Just giving him a google and noticed the normal SC dreads would be ideal as Warhounds in Adeptus Titanicus...

I've never really played Mordheim so I might misremember, but doesn't it have facings and base to base placement/positioning on the correct facing for combat? I can imagine that model is at least a little inconvenient

The Super-Detailed version of the Baneblade is actually quite a nice kit. I'd put it on par with the resin FW Baneblade. Change it up to modern weapons combos and it still holds up.

Mordheim is individual model skirmish - its not infantry blocks, and that particular Vamp is the Mordheim Vamp, not a WFB Vamp. At no point are Mordheim models required to rank up they would in WFB.

Speaking of Mordheim, I never realized that I wish I had gotten this set:

Honestly the only thing I can think of as a holy grail miniature today is a Halbarad with banner to go with my Grey Company. I can't afford the $500 its around for online, and I just don't like the other sculpt as much (plus its not exactly cheap either). Really hoping GW bring it back

In terms of what I own, it's probably my Knight Models Watchmen. I managed to snag the last set in Australia at a time where they'd been OOP for a while and they're pretty rare now. Happy to have them, and I won't let them go

SDBB's rarity had far more to do with its very limited release window. It was only available for about 6 months, compared to three+ years for the original BB/SS kits. SDBB was $110 compared to the regular $60 kits. Parts count was MUCH higher and was the reason for the cost.

And to stay on topic, I would early love one of the proto-Tyranid models shown in the Rogue Trader rulebook.

Probably the same as OP, the metal Gunship.
For a while you'd find 1 or 2 on eBay on any given day, but they all seemed to vanish into the warp since about 2017.

Other than that, maybe a second Gaunts Ghosts BL diorama. My first has a very shabby box, and unreadable certificate.

IIRC the citizens of the Empire were not part of Mordheim, but a general Fantasy release. I've got the duellists and the merchant + scribe somewhere.

May be wrong, but this was supposed to be part of an ongoing character series that never really took off, based on the art from the Blood on the Reik background book.

I'd assumed that they - as well as the other character pieces such as the "animosity" set or the goblin chasing / being chased by squigs - were trainee pieces that were good enough to be released. Same with some of the Specialist Games releases.

Not sure if it can be considered a "holy grail miniature" but I just managed to get the Imperial space marine miniature for £15 after searching for MONTHS.

Ok, I know it's not exactly old or really rare, but Christ, trying to find one new in sprue was the hardest for under £50, and painted examples ranged from the unsalvageable or so well painted it wouldn't feel right to strip it.

Just glad the search was over, thanks to a FLGS player clearing out his collection of grey plastic he forgot he had in a cupboard in his house!

The Wizards, Dungeon Denizens, and Minotaurs from Talisman/Warhammer Quest. They were available in small $8 "toy boxes" back in the 2000's, but now like everything else out of print the price has shot through the roof, regardless of desirability. Ideally I'd like the version of the Minotaurs that came boxed with 4 small models that were perfect to build swarms with. Just not wanting them enough to pay the $60+ asking prices I keep seeing on evilbay.

I have a few "holy grails", mostly to fill in gaps of my GW board games. I tend to find though that if I see something at a reasonable price I haven't got the money to buy it, but when I do have the money what I'm after is at a ridiculous price..

My current "holy grail" list is this though -

The Genestealer patriarch on the throne with magus, used in Space Hulk 1st edition. Seen a few a on evilbay at stupid prices...

The miniatures from the 2 Warhammer Quest (1995) expansions. Again stupid prices on evilbay.

Not to fill a gap or anything but I'd also like a better barbarian miniature for Warhammer Quest (1995), I just don't like the one that comes in the core box - looks like GW were inspired by Christopher Lambert in Highlander. I've looked everywhere but cannot find a sculpt that I like the look of, that fits GW's 28mm heroic scale (I bought a couple of metal "Conan" like sculpts from Reaper, but they're woefully undersized in comparison to GW's models), and looks like the guy in the Warhammer Quest iOS/Android/PC game. I tried making one myself out of bits from a sprue of Chaos Maruaders but failed miserably - the bodies and legs just aren't posed right and look all wrong for a dungeon crawling barbarian when you add the arms/head/sword/shield, and they're not very well detailed.

A full range of plastic new tool Steel Legion models would be nice, but I guess that's more of a "wishlist" thing than a "holy grail"...

I've also been looking for a Game Of Thrones/Skyrim style dragon (yes, I know, they're Wyverns), most of the sculpts I've seen just don't have the right look or aren't big enough...

Heresy Miniatures' Madame, a big nasty daemon model that I covet. It's crazy expensive and I'd never be able to use it in the Warhammer circles I'm in. I blew my budget for it on a Hastur model from Cthulhu Wars right before my gaming group decided it was GW models or the highway. Having coveted that model and now it's just a display piece I'm leery of giving in to my urge for more expensive, decorative resin.
