Dear Dakka,

My name's Flapjack and I've been in this hobby for quite a few years now.

It all began by collecting those LOTR magazines which came with miniatures. From there it sprang to WH40K, Warhammer, Necromunda, nearly every game system GW had. But the last few years I got more and more interested in historicals. I've already done lots of Bolt Action stuff, of which you can find a portion of in my gallery and my first P&M blog. The last one was very unorganised and lacked enthusiasm and content from my part. Hence this new attempt.

New year came and with it, the New Year's resolutions. One of them was to be more active in the hobby, so keeping track of what I've done and keeping me motivated was another reason for starting this new log. The start of 2019 goes hand in hand with a new project, and here's where this log really gets started.

The American War of Independence snagged my interest and having a few boxes of the stuff lying around from some years ago really helps. Now just to find some proper illustrations. A quick google search got me these two interesting images.

As usual with historicals an amount of time can creep into finding illustrations and information regarding the chosen time. Moving on to the actual hobby part, I'll show you what I've been up to these past few days. Starting this project off with some British Grenadiers then.

Grenadier Officer

Grenadiers

As you can see, the first weeks of 2019 and just this meagre lot to show. (But like they keep saying these days, participating is worth more than winning, am I right?)

I'll be using the Sharp Practice ruleset from Too Fat Lardies for this project, a skirmish game with units from 6 to 12 men depending on unit type.

That's all for now, I do hope I'll be back soon.

Regards, Flapjack.

Very interesting. That officer (?) looks quite cool.

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2019/01/20 20:55:59

Post by: Flapjack

Thank you kindly! Yes that's the officer.

I made some slight progress on the grenadiers. Nothing much, at this rate this project will be ready by 2020.

I also stocked up on materials to get some buildings constructed. I've seen lots of stuff online but didn't have any luck finding tutorials. Anyone got a link to something? Anything that would fit this setting would realy help.

Thanks,

Flapjack.

Interesting Project Flapjack, you managed to get some nice detail on those models already.

Keep up the good work

Post by: Flapjack

Thank you Midget Gems!

I finished painting the Grenadiers. I'm quite happy with them. I do have to apologise for the shabby quality of the pictures, I need to get a proper set up soon. Painting aside, I still have to get them based, but I figured I'd show you that I haven't been idle these past few days.

As you could probably tell I still have a lot to learn when it comes to painting skin. I hope I get the hang of it before the year is over.

Now these guys are as good as finished I felt some doubt about the yellow facings. I caught myself thinking, what about green? I then found some more reference online. Now I'm considering painting it over. I have some british light infantry lined up on the workbench next and I'll give it a go on those guys first.

55th Regiment of Foot (Westmorland) Grenadier

Thanks for checking this out.

Regards,

Flapjack.

The green is good, but always seems less... British somehow. I know it's historical but I quite like the yellow. Yellow also is a harder colour to paint so shows technique imho.

Nice work! personally, i like the green

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2019/02/04 21:11:45

Post by: Flapjack

Thanks guys!

I think I'll stick with the yellow for grenadiers and line infantry then. As for light infantry I'll go for green. In Sharp Practice, light infantry are really small units of 6 men so I believe this will make them stand out more.

Speaking of light infantry, here's a WIP on the officer for these guys. Early stages though. (a suprising lack of green paint)

That's all I have for now, cheers.

Hello everyone.

Here's a small update. Based the grenadiers and painted the light officer. Nothing new really, just a tiny progress report. I'm thinking about going over the sand with Vallejo's mud effect. I did it for my bolt action stuff but I'm not sure I want that same churned over earth effect for this period. Meanwhile I'm still stocking up on terrain supplies.

Thanks for watching.

Regards,

Flapjack.

Good evening.

Made some progress on the light infantry, I finished two of 'em. Progress is very slow but I'll get there eventually.

I'm not so happy with the second guy's face. That explains why he's got his back turned, he's a bit shy.

Cheers,

Flapjack.

Greetings Dakka.

I got around to complete painting and basing the light infantry. That puts my total for 2019 up to 16 finished miniatures. Not much but it's a start. I have a lot of free time this week, so here's hoping for no distractions.

Thanks for visiting.

Cheers.

Good evening Dakka.

I made a start on some American militia. The kit is from warlord's AWI range and you can create some unique looking miniatures with it. It was also time for me to paint something other than red. I feel like these guys can be used for loads of different settings. I'm happy to be cracking on with these guys for the time being.

Cheers.

Post by: Flapjack

Hey everyone.

I got this one painted. He's to be the officer for the militia. The milita box did not come with any pistol arms so I had to borrow one from the british. I'm happy with this one, although I realize there's lots to be learned still.

Thanks for visiting!

They're all coming along nicely! The militia seem like they would be a lot of fun to paint, with all the potential for variety.

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2019/03/04 19:19:40

Post by: youwashock

Liking the militia. The redcoats look good all finished up, too.

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2019/03/06 20:53:07

Post by: Flapjack

Thanks for the kind words guys!

The militia are indeed fun to work on, given the variation that one could put in. It does take a bit longer though. Uniformed men can easily be batch painted while these guys need a bit more 'personal time'. I have one more militiaman to paint and then it's on to basing these guys. After that's done I'd have a six man skirmisher unit for Sharp Practice, and an officer to lead them. Add four more and I could field them as a line unit.

To add some variation to the things I do, I've started work on some Chaos Raptors. These guys might be put on the back end of the to do list though, as there's so much other miniature stuff around to keep me entertained. The Raptors will most likely be assembled as they 'should' be. Still deciding on a paint job of course. Was thinking Night Lords because I've read the three books a while ago. I like the fact that they don't appear to be as zealous as some other Chaos Legions and they look mighty cool as well. Either that or some custom renegade warband. Decisions decisions!

Here's the obligatory Pics or it didn't happen

Besides that there's the pile of unpainted Tau that I have lying around. The pile keeps calling me from time to time but for some reason it stays untouched. There's also some Kharadron stuff to be finished, for which I've also decided on a stock paint scheme

I've put a spoiler on it because I've shared this on on my old blog as well.
Spoiler:

The Historical hobby stuff will remain the main project though. I don't think anyone in this hobby can resist the old GW bug after supposedly swearing it off.

Thanks for reading, cheers.

Thanks Captain Brown!

I got some stuff done this weekend. Finished the militia unit and made some farmland. The Raptors are assembled and awaiting a primer. Settled on Night Lords after all and I went and got the right paints I hope.

Hey Dakka.

Between work and playing video games I've managed to get this Marder Tank Destroyer ready for my Bolt Action Germans. I'm quite happy how he turned out. Maybe next time I'll go easier on the camp stripes though, as it feels a bit too heavy perhaps.

Thanks for dropping by.

Post by: Flapjack

Good evening everyone.

As I may have mentioned before I have a load of unpainted tau laying around and have finally decided to do something about it. I really like the T'au scheme but I'm thinking of mixing it up a bit. The armor color will will stay the same more of less but for the clothing for fire warriors and such I was thinking red, or maybe even a light, dirty green. I've painted up this ethereal to see how I'll do. Lots of crisp lines and I feel tau really need a clean, sharp paint job. This may not exactly be the paint scheme I'll be aiming for though. Any advice on that would be greatly appreciated.

So here he is. Note to self: I need to work on thinning my paints more. It's painfully obvious in this picture.

Thanks for visiting!

Post by: Maharg

Nice stuff. Militia and redcoats look good, particularly like the natural colours on the militia. I like the red with the Tau colours, certainly works on the ethereal, will be interesting to see how it works on the fire warriors without the blue skin. Look forward to seeing more

I like that color on the ethereal, red has my vote!

The tank looks amazing, too

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2019/04/14 11:17:39

Post by: kestral

Nice stuff - you nailed that tank! Although I rarely do historicals, I do love to see them. I like red as an "Honor Color" myself - my space marines have red for officers cloaks, some crests and so on. Makes models really stand out from others. Could work as Tau cloth though, if you are going for more "ceremonial" look. Give them some back banners and other flourishes and declare them to be personal guard of so and so perhaps?

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2019/04/16 21:53:08

Post by: Flapjack

Thanks for the kind words and keeping me motivated guys. And thank you kestral for the tips, I will certainly keep them in mind. I only have some work in progress to show for now though. Almost done with an officer for my British line and then there's also some early work on my tau fireblade.

I've been trying to thin my paints with water but I'm guessing it doesn't really do the trick. I know vallejo sells paint thinner but does anyone have some experience with that specific thinner? I'm wondering how it will work with citadel paints. Most of my stuff is painted using a combination of those two brands.

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2019/04/20 20:55:51

Post by: Flapjack

Time for some minor updates.

After having tried red for the tunics, I'm not convinced that's the way I want to go. Too much of an Angry Marines feel to it. So I've decided for a dirty green. I also did some work on a Night Lords Raptor, but I'm thinking of applying a wash over the thunder strikes to tone it down a bit.

Thanks for dropping by.

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2019/04/21 14:55:02

Post by: Flapjack

Well thats was faster then I expected. Finished the fireblade. I might revisit him later for some minor freehand markings on the cape, when I feel confident enough for it. Maybe a tuft of flock here and there. But for now I'm calling him done and I'm happy with it.

Post by: Flapjack

Hey everyone. I dug up every tau unit I own. Not a huge lot but I'll try to not buy anything else before finishing this lot. I'll have to admit that nothing is magnetized. The piranah's drones are glued to it, a mistake from a few years back.

So that will keep me busy for a while.

I really like how the Fire Warrior came out. The sea green with the ochre looks quite good.

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2019/05/08 16:07:40

Post by: Maharg

Fire warrior looks good, Green works well.
For thinning paints I find that water works fine with citadel paints for me in most cases, certainly for base coats or edge highlights. I do use the gw medium for making glazes though as water would get too runny at that dilution

Post by: Flapjack

Thanks everyone.

Thanks for the tip Maharg.

Made some progress on gundrones. Not an exciting subject but still... I finished two of them and 5 more are being batchpainted. I will revisit later to add green sept markings.

Post by: youwashock

Cool little bots. Maharg is right, water can be enough in a lot of situations. A wet pallette can help keep the paint flowing, too. For really thinning the paint you will probably want a medium of some kind, either the water/Future mix or a clear acrylic medium so the color does not get too washed out.

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2019/05/14 23:23:40

Post by: Captain Brown

Nice work Flapjack.

As mentioned, you can get a nice smooth finish on Tau without any special mediums. Just look at my Tau painting log, all painted with just paint and water.

thanks guys.

I'll look into a wet palette, nice tip Youwashock.

I've taken another look at your tau Captain Brown. Great, neat stuff. Classic T'au are always and eye pleaser.

I've finished painting the rest of the gun drones. I've also painted up a flamethrower team for my bolt action germans. fun little break from the tau stuff. I'm quite happy with how the flames on little Hans turned out.

Hey thanks, Glad you like them!

I was thinking the Tau needed some adversaries so I converted these three testers for Imperial Guard. The parts used were Victrix, Perry and Games Workshop Admech. Still some work to do. Fill some gaps, add some equipment… But at least I'm glad I got to sit down and fiddle around a bit.

Not really sure where I want to go with them. I was thinking some local House on a recently colonized world large and wealthy enough to fund a small army and rise up against the new Tau rule. Based off of Praetorians, pith helmets will fit this theme I believe. No bases yet, I need to dig up some first.

Yet another project to distract myself with, hurrah.

As always, thanks for dropping by.

Hey guys, I managed to squeeze in a little hobby time.

I'm finished with the piranha, I'm glad to say. Tried my hand at some battle-damage as well, as one of the drones antenna broke off. Nothing much as I didn't want it over the top. I wanted to go for a burnt out look and I think I've managed that. Also went for some very minor chipping on the side just to practice. I'm happy with the result, although I see a lot of room for improvement. If anyone has any ideas or tips, they're more than welcome.

Apart from that, there's three more Imperial soldiers built. This force will most likely never reach a legal or playable list. The main goal here is just to have some fun converting stuff. There's a couple of ideas running around my head as to how to paint them, but more on that later.

On to the salt of the Imperium then.

Looking at the pictures of the piranha, I've noticed the hull looks very grainy still. Still figuring out if I like it or not. (Thinning, will I ever learn?)

As always, thanks for checking in!

Good evening everyone.

I'm testing a colour scheme on the imperial soldiers now, and I could use some help. Just the tunics so far.

This is what I have so far, and I'm not really happy so far.

To give you guys an idea I'll share what I'm using for inspiration.

Spoiler:
(these images are not mine)

(Found on DevantArt

I'm basically asking how I can improve on this, because I'm not too happy with it. I think I went a little too light with this. I used game color turquoise and Vallejo green blue. I was thinking of starting a little darker and then working up with the aforementioned colors. I'm aiming for a muted, worn off blue rather than too light or too dark. At first I wanted to go with yellow and red but decided against it, to add variation.

Thanks for reading and I'm hoping someone could help out here. Eager to learn!

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2019/06/04 21:37:58

Post by: youwashock

I agree that your current color is too saturated when compared with your reference pics. You should probably start darker and mix lighter greys in for highlights, rather than another brighter blue. There is also a chance you may want a wash to muddy things up. I like the bits of weathering on the Piranha.

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2019/06/04 22:55:22

Post by: Maharg

That's a nice distinct looking guard regiment you're building there, look forward to seeing it painted up. Agree with youwashock on adding some greys to the mix to get closer to the pictures.
Tau continue to look good too.

Thanks for your input guys!

Here he is again, getting messy. Started with dark reaper, then thunderhawk blue and highlighted with vallejo field blue. Looking better already I think. From this point on I have a better idea on how to continue.

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2019/06/05 23:36:44

Post by: Maharg

That definitely looks closer to your source material.
I had some spare time last night and tried a couple of things for this, though it seems i wasn't as quick as you - turns out I had a similar idea and tried out a scheme using Thunderhawk blue (THblue, drakenhof nightshade wash, reapply THblue, couple of highlights adding Fenrisian grey to th TH blue) which cam out like this. The other one used Alaitoc blue instead of thunderhawk blue, same wash and again mixed with FG for highlights. Gave something in between the TH blue and your initial attempt
thunderhawk blue

alaitoc

Flapjack,

I did my Tau with just regular GW paints just mixed in some water to thin the paint a little. One extra coat of watered down paint made a really smooth surface. Examples in my Tau log show that it was not as hard as I thought, even when repainting striped models.

Hope that helps,

CB

I went along with the first method you described Maharg. I did change fenrisian grey with russ grey though. That's the first of the bunch finished and I'm finally pleased with it.

The plastic mountain stirs from slumber

Hello guys, I'm back from from a short break. The Tau have been boxed untill further notice. I've picked up the AWI project again and also planning a D&D campaign. Hobbywise, that means working on some spooky bad boys for now.

So far i have this guy finished. I'm pleased with how the cloak turned out. Those colors will be used to tie the skeletons in too.

Moving on to the AWI project, the officer and sergeant are done, besides basing. The line itself are still WIP.

So that's all for now, thanks for visting!

Thanks, I appreciate it!

The british are coming, although at a turtle's pace. I did get some serious work done on the skeletons. Painting is done, just the bases to finish. I will be adding a wash over it and then applying some mossy folliage.

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2019/08/21 19:58:58

Post by: Flapjack

Micro update time.

I got a bit sidetracked by Apex Legends, that stuff can become quite addictive. Added some meagre folliage on the skeleton bases and cobled together a quick random adventurer from empire handgunner, swordman and leftover skeleton bits. Nothing much really, just felt like sharing the tiny progress I made.

Painting these bone boys was enjoyable but I'll be glad to move them off the workbench. Also, by looking at these pictures I realized I forgot to add a wash over the gravel. D'ohh.

Simple eh? Well, here's hoping to get more stuff done by the end of
the week.

Cheers!

The mini skeleton horde looks quite cool. Marvelously rusty. Rando the Adventurer looks good, too. Nothing like sitting down with the bitzbox and seeing what shakes out.

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2019/09/16 20:05:11

Post by: Flapjack

Hey thanks!

So Rando the adventurer... I'm sticking to that. Speaking of which, here he is. Only basing left to do

I also painted a civilian for the AWI project. Might be a priest, who knows. If so he's going to need a church. And the redcoats continue to advance at a turtle's pace. Slow and steady wins the race they say.

I'm starting to dislike batch painting, working on rank and file for historicals can quickly take the wind out of my sails. Moving on! Small scatter terrain that came from a LOTR set i've had for ages.

Last but not least is a cabalite for the Corvus Cabal. Warcry has really grabbed my attention lately and have decided to have a stab at it. The Crow Boys are easily my favorite of the warbands.

I still have to paint as what appears to be a slashed throat on this guy (I know nothing about warcry fluff wise), but I yet have to figure out how to do it convincingly. The feather cape looks like it could use a few touches of white for variation, but I'll get there.

So that is all for today's update, untill we meet again!

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2019/09/17 03:16:42

Post by: youwashock

Rando turned out swell. Loving the little bits of rust on the armor. The crow is super cool. Only my own teetering tower of unpainted shame keeps me from considering a band or two.

Post by: Flapjack

Thanks! I enjoy working on these little crows. I've hoped to get these guys done on time as I've got the starter set coming in a few days, adding even more height to Mount Plastic.

Still managed to get one more crow done.

The murder grows.

Still undecided for the bases. I got the technical paint down so there's some nice cracking going down. Considering some wash, minor tufts, some rocks and skulls here and there...

Thanks for visiting!

I agree that they sort of ask for sparse basing. Something bleak, arid even. Love the way you are doing their masks.

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2019/09/29 18:55:15

Post by: Flapjack

In reality the masks are highlighted and such, my crappy photography skills don't really show that. Worked a bit more on the corvus, finishing another cabalite and adding tufts. I hope this feels arid enough.

My warcry starter set also came through, yay! I've assembled both warbands so far. Just the beasts and terrain to do now. Opening that big box was a bit overwhelming, loads of sprues and other goodies. I had to dig through to get the rulebook out and gave it a quick read. Looks exciting!

Impressive variety of projects going here. I really like the bearded force commander. He reminds me of a very Ahab sort of character. The Corvus Warcry models are looking very nice, too. The models are dynamic and your high-contrast, limited-palette paint scheme really helps the eye see the dynamic movement of the models. Keep 'em coming.

Thanks guys!

I'm trying to finish the grunts first before starting papa crow though.

I started on the first iron golem as well. Wanted to ditch color and go with bare rusted metal. Looking at the result, this isn't really what I imagined. Skin feels off too. I might add some color to the armor, maybe green as I'm not a big fan of the original red.

Any sugestions?

Thanks for stopping by.

The rust is so good. I think it would work with some green bits, though. Just to break it up a little. A bluish green, to play off the reddish orange of the rust.

That rust does look good. Seems a shame to replace it - before you paint over it with another colour, maybe you could try changing the skin up a bit to contrast more (in the picture the greyish tones don't stand out that much), maybe a more pink tone or possibly a pale skin with a blue or green wash. Could be all that model needs. Also, some brighter metal chipping around some prominent areas could add a bit more definition to the metals

The crows are coming on nicely too. I wasn't that sold on them when they were released but seeing them here is changing my mind on them, maybe I'll get them if I ever finish the starter set (it's an awful lot of plastic isn't it!)

Thanks guys.

I've already done the green layer I'm afraid. The result looks good in my opinion. You can still see some rust through it I think. I will add some chipping later, good tip.

Sorry for the shaky photos though, will take beter ones later.

In hindsight, yellow could also be a cool color for them. Iron Golems, Iron Wariors... hmm. I think I could easily do it over the green, might add some cool effect.

Also got another crow done. I'm happy with how the actual crow turned out.

The corvus are what got me into the warcry craze. At first the iron golems seemed dull to me but I'm really warming up to them. Might consider buying a second box of golems to do some converting.

That's all for now folks, thanks for dropping in.

Thank you.

I took a break for a couple of days but managed to get this golem started just now. I wanted to give yellow a try and I think this is the way to go.

So here's another tiny update!

Very dark picture I'm afraid, but it is late. Need to work on getting pictures right soon.

Shoot. I missed the green. That looked pretty good, as does the latest crow. The yellow works. Combined with the mask, it really makes him look like some barbaric deep-sea diver.

Thanks guys.

Made some progress on the golems today. I've been distracted by video games a lot lately. But that's about to change. I've been to Crisis this weekend, a big hobby Con in antwerp and invested in a new project. Test of honour. The second edition hit shelves recently and I've enjoyed playing first ed a lot. Picked up some terrain for it as well and a bunch of perry metals. The warlord plastic sets were ok, but fidly as hell.

With that being said, here are the Golems.

Just need to add some tufts and that's that. Thinking of adding some blood spatter and a decapitated human head to the back of the big guy though.

Nothing to show on the test of honour project yet, will start as soon as I can on it.

Dear readers, thanks for visiting.

That sounds better than what I was going to do. I'm going with that, thanks.

Also made a start on the feudal japan project. I have three hoises laying around from warbases.com, not really a japanese range but these will work. Got the first one assembled and planning a trip to get some black primer spray.

Also started on this guy, came with the second edition set.

You are all too kind

So I finished painting the unarmoured samurai.

Except for basing ofcourse, as usual. I'm fairly happy with this guy. Tried to give him a faded orange cloak and it turned out good in my opinion.

Also started on the building, but not much to show yet. Started with the tiles. Painting and highlighting hundreds of tiles individually... Sweet Emperor what have I done....

So many roof tiles. So many...

I finally finished the first of three houses. Took a lot longer than I anticipated. The two others are a bit larger then this one so I believe I will paint up a few miniatures in between to cool off.

I might have rushed things along here and there, but at least it's done.

That's all, cheers for stopping by.

Hi there.

Painting anything bigger then a 28mm infantry miniature is not really my thing. Cavalry, tanks, terrain... I'd rather do infantry. But I'm still glad it's finished and it looks good in my opinion.

Was considering painting the smaller floor tiles red or green but decided against it, that would make everything too busy i thought.

I did finnish another samurai and started on some ashigaru bowmen.

This one was a bit rushed to be fair. Wanted to try something brighter then the last one but I'm not entiraly sold on it. In the future I'll tone it down a bit until I'm confident I can do patterns on the robes.

Early progress though. I'm continuing where I left off from last edition of TOH. painted this sergeant a while ago and was fairly happy with the colour scheme.

The green does vary a bit, don't know how I did it last time though.

I need to write down paint recipes more often.

Thanks guys.

I painted up some ashigaru next. Three spearmen and three bowmen. There's just one musketman and a samurai to paint, then repeat this for the second clan and we'll be able to play our first game.

On to the pics. Note, basing left to do. Also need to do their multibases.

That's all for now. Hopefully the next update will not be so far off.

I'm a bit late, but a happy new year to you all!

The intention was to finish the core of the first warband in 2019 but the festivities took up more time than I had hoped. With the completion of the handgunner and the armoured samurai, only the basing is left to do. Trust me, I'll get there.

Their footwear could use a touch up. The sashimo (banner) on the samurai is very simplistic I confess. Freehand is not something I feel confident doing. It's basic but effective in my opinion.

I also tried fiddling around with the pictures so they'd be a bit more clear. After spending about two minutes on it I realized a smartphone camera will never be an adequate tool for the job.

That's the first entry for 2020. I hope the pictures don't hurt your eyes.

Cheers!

I'm happy with the bases myself. Basing always gets put off with me so I'm just glad I finally got to it.

In the meantime I started on the core of the second clan but there's really nothing to show yet. I did get some good work in on a Reaper miniatures pirate. Still work in progress though but I like where it's going if I may say so.

The area around the eyes need some more work though. He has a sort of blank look at the moment. There's no eyebrows sculpted so drawing them on right will be a fun task...

Hello!

I'm calling the pirate dude done. Not exactly happy with him but it was good practice.

Then on to some WIP shots of the second band of ashigaru. Early days but I think I'm on the right track with these dudes

Finally, a miniature off the bushido range. I'm painting this one for a friend who will be using it in his dnd campaign. He's running a drunk monk and asked for blushing cheeks and a drunk man's nose. Slowly getting there.

Thanks for stopping by, cheers.

It's been fun working on him too. I don't have any progress on him though...

Thanks for the feedback guys, very much appreciated!

I finished the core of the second band. I can start expanding both warbands now.

Remembering i had the Sohei kit laying around, I dug them up and had a go at them. This is the leader of the band, early WIP. I don't think I'll ever play them as a warband but they are cool models to spread out.

Besides that, I cleaned up my workspace. Much more room now. I tossed a lot of old scrap. Now to keep it organized, daunting idea.

I took a look at your ToH and Bushido stuff, Theophony, and it's top notch stuff. Im looking forward to see you add to that collection. Hopefully your supplier stocks up soon.

Grey For Now just announced their first expansion to Test of Honour, so that's some exciting news. All the more reason to get stuff done and get a game in. I've only played this game back in 1st edition.

In a surge of activity I managed to get 4 more miniatures done.

Some more ashigaru for the second clan and another Sohei archer.

Playing Ghost of Tsushima is a real motivator and inspiration to get more mini samurai done. Starting a Jin Sakai inspired warband is surely on the list of things to do.

Greetings.

I did some work over the weekend. Finished another Sohei and some romanians in winter dress for Bolt Action.

The romanians were a nice change from paining samurai. I painted these much quicker than an average ashigaru. The Sohei looks a bit rushed as well. To be fair, this sculpt didn't really catch my eye. Still somewhat happy with him.

First of all, the Sohei.

Romanian officer team.

Sniper team

Infantry

Hello friends.

I dusted off my tau stuff and now they have some more hooves on the ground. Well, only 2 pairs to be fair. My tau stuff is on a slow burn right now. Still have to come up with some custom fluff for this personal sept. And paint lots more ofcourse.

Couldn't help myself, bought another start collecting tau box. Mainly because I wanted some breachers and a chance to convert the ethereal into a fireblade. I like the official sculpt for him, but I just had to have a go myself.

It's a relatively easy conversion and I look forward to painting him up. Maybe he needs some new neck armor because i cut away the original. Plan was to go for a helmet but bare heads just scream out 'I'm the boss' more in 40k.

Thanks for dropping in!

Dunno what a fireblade is, but the cloaked gunner is a sweet model.

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2020/09/16 00:42:23

Post by: Flapjack

Thanks!

A Fireblade is a veteran firewarior who has earned the right to pilot a crisis suit, but has chosen to lead firewarrios at the heart of the gunline instead. It's a kind of infantry commander. I hope I got the lore correct.

So, a new page deserves a little groupshot I think. Here is what I have finished painting for the tau project. Not much. Three firewarriors, a piranha, the official sculpt for the fireblade and some gundrones.

I have a lot more tau to paint before justifying buying more.

I also found a neat little bookstore which sells an assortment of hobby magazines. So I got an older issue of conquest including a sprue of 5 SM scouts and an issue of miniature wargames that had some abysmal dwarfs included. Kinda like the old fantasy chaos dwarfs.

So I've gotten my hands on 2 more neat little sideprojects.

Stay tuned for more, thanks for visiting!

Good evening gentlemen.

Managed to take a quick snap of the latest 'completed' miniature. Basically it's a test model for the mechanicum stuff I have laying around. Not a lot, but nothing of it is painted yet. Great way to reduce the plastic mountain of shame.

I am happy with how it turned out, works great for the standard infantry but how I go about doing the vehicles and armoured models is still a question. Not sure how the alternating colors will hold up on say, a dunewalker.

I also wanted a slightly rusted feel to it, really complements the colors of the robes.

Base still needs work, hoping I can get a sulpherous look going. Time for practice me thinks!

Other than this I have a fantasy assassin in the works and some firewarriors, but this is what I could get done in between work and changing diapers.

Thanks again for dropping by and see you soon!

I like the colours on the tech priest. Should work well enough on the vehicles in a quartered scheme on most of them. Maybe halved on the two legged ones with the skitarii robes halved the opposite way? Look forward to seeing more of these

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2020/10/06 10:08:57

Post by: tzurk

Hey mate,

Really enjoy the quartered look on your tech priest. Makes him feel a bit like a medieval knight in his livery - a cool contrast with the grubbed up armour underneath. Turquoise as a tertiary colour was a great choice I think. I think vehicles should work alright; they will be a bit trickier but Howling Griffons space marines have a similar scheme and there are plenty of dreadnoughts/rhinos about for a bit of inspiration.

I also love the heavy use of turquoise on the Tau - it makes such a good colour combo with the orange and is a fresh and interesting take on the classic orange/brown tau fire warrior.

The historical asian stuff is very impressive too. Love the mounted samurai and fat monk in particular.

Good luck clearing some more of the mountain!

Post by: Flapjack

I'm glad you like the tech priest, guys!

I've taken some looks at Howling Griffons vehicles and I'm more confident that it will work on the Mechanicus stuff as well.

There really isn't that much time left between life and work, but somehow I have a little bit to show you!

First up is a fantasy assassin. Wanted a dark feel to it so I used lots of dark grey and dark blue for this one. Pretty happy with it myself.

Then there's this little mess. I picked up some cheap scouts a while back and it was time to get started on em. I wanted a weathered bone white main color. I started woth some Mig paints I had never used before. Used dunkelgelb (first mistake) but it came out way too glossy. I figured, maybe use a yellow wash (second mistake) will make it a bit better.

At first I thought, yay accidental Imperial Fist. But then again, I have so much yellow going on already that these guys should go back to the drawing board.

Maybe next time I should start with a color that is acually close to what I want to achieve

Thanks for all the kind words and motivation! See you next time.

Ah, another update. Lovely

I found some time to scale Ol' Plastic Mountain again. A few different Different bits this time. I'll start with the Tau updates, as that army gets most of my time lately.

The Fireblade is ready and I'm happy with it. Pictures will be a bit more wonky than usual as I've got a new camera. Still need to figure out the settings on that. The face will need a touch more love and the edging is rough if you look closely, but from a distance it looks alright.

Next squad I'll tackle is a unit of stealth suits, of which I've painted the first member. Edging looks a bit better here in my opinion. I think I tend to over edge Tau guns, which makes it look too messy. I'll need to tone that down from now on.

I also have this little conversion to show. I wanted to have breachers who look as if they've seen a fair few fights, so I've fooled around with some Skitarii bits. I've used a torso from the infiltrators kit on this one. looks OK to me, will move on to other bionics like arms and legs soon. Any tips are welcome here. I don't have much experience with these sort of things. (Really crappy picture, sorry about that)

Moving on, there's another fantasy sneaky boy.

Finally, A death Guard champion. It was nice to paint something dirty, and I'm also fairly happy with this one.

And that's all there is today. I'm happy to have knocked a few boys off the Pile of Shame.

See you later!

A bit late.

Thanks Gobert. The plague marine was a nice change to painting up tau.

It is february and my completed model count is up to 7! Humble, yes, but it's something. Still, two more squads finished for the Greater Good.

I'm more or less posting to prove I'm still alive. My apologies if the quality of the pictures hurts your eyes, my camera lens took a few knocks, so these pics will look very wacky. I'm still looking into a fix for that.

Stealth suits ready to sneak up on unsuspecting foes.

A marksman preparing to take his sniper drones on a camping trip.

Looks ok from a distance so I'm happy.

And that's all folks, thanks for dropping by!

See you later!

Liking the variety of projects you're working on! Those Tau are looking really effective as a group together, with that slight twist on the usual tan-coloured Tau colour scheme.

That teal colour looks excellent! Really like the contrast on the Tau. Looks like a lovely day at the beach, just with lots of plasma rifles and drones!

Great work on your tech-priest as well, that quartered scheme looks ace. Reminds me I have that same tech-priest sat gathering dust in the corner!

Thanks for all the kind words guys!

I have not been idle. Pushed through the Sohei kit and finally have them all painted and based. I only need to do the multibases for now. I am pleased with how they turned out. They've been on the painting que for far too long.

Now that I have them finished, I shouldn't feel guilty about buying the newer Sohei kit by Grey For Now Games.

Up next is another building for test of hnonour and a trio of Oni. More on that later as the WIP is still very early.

Thanks for dropping by!

Cheers

Hi there.

Here is another house I painted for test of honour. Pretty pleased with it except for the stepping stones and the floors.

The floor was first painted vallejo bone white after which I added a layer of vallejo wood grain, wich is a kind of wash (I think?) It came out a little bit to shiny.

I might give the floor a do over later on. For now, I'm moving to another piece. Not quite sure what, perhaps some Oni!

See you next time!

Nice work Flapjack.

Your are correct in that the highlighting of the steps make them looked curved. I would just use a single grey and then drybrush the edges with a lighter grey.

My two cents,

CB

Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll

I think the stairs would make more sense with the highlighting if they were the other way, with the dark area towards the front. Because rn it looks like the dark areas are worn depressions in the steps. That would be great, except depressions on steps happen towards the edge of the step, not the rear of it. So if you want to do something fancy, reversing the steps and then doing a drybrush edge just to bring some definition to the "new" edge would look great!

Hello!

Thanks for the input guys! I like both ideas and I wil have a shot at both and see what works best. I have already put a matt varnish over the wooden floor and that seemed to tone it down a bit.

Some good news next, I managed to get a game of Test of Honour in! I was happy to get the dice out again, but in my excitment I did forget to take enough pictures.

Time to tell you a little tale!

Imagine a long winding road. Upon that road there is a tea house so renowned, that warriors dare upon this long and boring road just to sip on those glorious herbs. It is within sight of said teahouse that the eyes of two noble warriors met. On one side, an honourable samurai saw a pious warrior monk approaching the entrance.

Surely, the samurai would have the right to enter first? After a heated argument resulted in the throwing of insults, the urge to uphold ones honour removed all notion of common sense.

A overall look of the battlefield, outlying buildings surounding the teahouse at the center righthand side of the road.

The Sohei warrior monk did reach the teahouse first. He ran inside, breaking several priceless cups doing so. He dared the Samurai to follow him inside for a round of fisticuffs. The samurai obliged and ran for the entrance. His loyal ashigaru followed, wondering why they were in a fight over tea, of all things.

Down the road, archers from both retinues exchanged unsuccesfull volleys.

The Samurai was surprised to see the Warrior Monk emerge from the back of the tea house, forcing him to give chase and charge.

This resulted in first blood for the Clan forces. Just a few drops of blood though. The Monk sped back in the teahouse, his sprint causing more furniture to tumble.

The samurai, emboldened by his succesfull jab gave chase again, but was blocked by more naginata wielding Sohei. He urged his ashigaru forward to battle. His banner bearer close by, he joined the fight.

While the Clan forces were dodging naginata strikes, the Sohei Monk charged through the front door again, into the archers. In a few fell swoops he slayed two, forcing the survivor into a retreat.

Allerted by the death shrieks, the samurai turned after passing a Test of Wits. He left his ashigaru to fend of the monks and charged the vagabond who robbed him the honour of being first served tea.

As soon as he turned his back, one of his spearmen dropped, clutching an ugly bellywound.

The samurai barged into his foe, scoring more wounds. A final jab knocked the monk to the ground. His honour had been restored.

The victorious Samurai finally entered the teahouse, crunching fragments of broken pottery. He sat down at a broken table and urged a terrified owner over to order tea.

Outside, his ashigaru counted three dead, while the monks gathered up their wounded leader, homeward.

That's a great story behind the skirmish, especially with the difference between the Samurai's retainers taking the casualties, and the Monk taking the wounds himself. Great to see a nice painted game!

Hello!

Thanks guys, I'm looking forward to the next game. Who knows what epic tales will be told in the future...

In the meantime, I finished the Oni.

Here is one of them compared to a WIP ashigaru officer from the Perry range. I was concerned at first, that the Oni wouldn't be big enough. They seem to be just large enough, luckily enough.

Painting these was fun. I have a set of Tengu on the way as well, among other things. Fingers crossed they arrive soon!

Thanks for dropping by, cheers.

Post by: Flapjack

Thanks Gwyn! They were a joy to paint.

I did some work for one of the clan forces. If I ever feel inspired, I'll come up with proper names.

So, here is an ashigaru sergeant and a musician. They lend some good buffs to the ashigaru on the field. For the sashimono I chose the same icon as I did on the larger banner. Ties them up nicely.

I've also taken a step into greenstuff. I wanted to build a Ronin ally to use as a second in command. I decided he needed a straw coat and a tengu face mask. For the mask I used a slightly bigger head and tried to sculpt exagerated facial features on. If I look at tengu masks, a large nose seems most common.

I'm undecided as how to continue on him.

- I could leave him as is to avoid clutter
- i could add a straw hat hanging on his back, but that would just end up looking like a huge pile of straw if I place a straw hat over a straw coat.
- i could add a severed head in his free hand.

Decisions, decisions...

See you next time!

Hello there!

I recently finished another building, the biggest as of yet. Painting rooftiles is still a pain in the behind but in the end, I'm happy with how it looks.

I still have two torii gates and a pagoda to assemble and paint. Once that is all done I reckon I'll have a good enough amount of terrain for now. There's also a bunch of miniatures in the works but that's all early WIP, so I'll post em once they are worth looking at

Pics or it didn't happen...

Was thinking of slapping some dirt on the outer floor tiles. That's for later though, already spent way too long on this to my liking.

Thanks for dropping by, see ya later!

Hello!

I finished a bunch of little dudes. Let's go straight to the pictures.

First up is an unarmoured samurai. I might go back to him later to add some decoration to his robes. I couldn't get the face right on this one. But I should ask myself, will I ever get the hang of it?

Then there is a samurai and musketmen for the unnamed green clan. I had some problems with this one. I think there was a minor miscast. There was a lot of excess metal between his arms and head. Tried cleaning it up but only managed to clean it up slightly. I was afraid I'd damage the rest too much.

There is also another samurai and sergeant for the yellow clan. Also some musketmen

And that's all for now. As you can see I have some new orange tufts by greestuff world. It looks really nice in my opinion. They are a lot easier to attach then what I have been using so far. I'm considering getting some autumn leaves from greenstuff world as well. Might need some tweezers for that though.

I really like the perry miniatures but I have to say, I'm working in the ashigaru scouts by Grey For Now, and they are better casts to be honest. I will continue to use a mix of miniature suppliers, the Grey For Now ones are a tad bigger but the details are much more profound.

Also working on a bunch of multibases, but that's for another update.

Thanks for visiting!

I think the face on your first samurai looks good. What don't you like about it?

Flapjack's Log: Climbing Plastic Mountain @ 2021/08/02 18:03:15

Post by: Flapjack

Hi there.

Well Syro, you can't really see it in the picture but the paint went on a little flakey. That's a stupid mistake by me, working with paint that already started to dry. I could have prevented it, lesson learned.

I finished some more stuff, yay!

First up is a Torri Gate. First of two, the second is not assembled yet. I don't want two exact same ones and I'm still figuring out what to do with the other one. Simple paintjob on this one, but it got the job done.

Then there is this devil of a samurai. Now I need some red ashigaru forces to go with him.

Last but not least is this Ronin I plan to use as a companion in my games. Who knows, he'll lead his own warband in the future. Posted this one unpainted earlier. It's a plastic warlord figure with a metal head from black cat bases. I tried to sculpt over a tengu face mask, which really came out well after painting. The straw coat is also greenstuff work. I did some research and it's not entirely correct. Nevertheles this was great practice and I learned how to do straw coats correctly in the future.

That's all, thanks for visiting

Good grime on the Death Guard guy. I love your Tau. I've got two boxes of them I have to knock out. Your Japanese figs and buildings are great.

Thanks Pointer! I appreciate the kind words.

It's gonna be mostly japanese stuff for a while. But I do have three primaris marines somewhere that I want to paint as black templars soon. Also, the new killteam got me excited to kitbash a tau squad. Got some nice ideas already. I'll get started on those when I feel the need for variation.

After gathering dust for about two years I managed to slap some paint on the ashigaru scouts. These are sculpts by Grey For Now. I really like the Perry stuff but these scouts are much more cleanly cast. A real joy to paint up.

So here's the scouts.

And also the runner and the sergeant. The runner has a huge mold line on the top of his head I just noticed. Thinking of painting it up as a scar, that might explain his bald head

These guys have some interesting rules so I'm looking forward to test them out.

I am also working on a pagoda by ttcombat's eastern range. Nice kit but it ended up bigger then I expected. It barely fits on my shelves. I still have to do the stairs and doors and then it will be ready for painting.

I kind of regret building it now. I got this far before we bought a house. Now I'll have to move the damn thing. There's going to be more hobby space for me though!

I'm considering getting the little lightbox off greenstufworld. It's cheap, small and will result in better pictures.

That's all for today's update, thanks for visiting.

Really impressive collection of models and terrain that I have not seen anywhere else. The color palette fits well. And you have created some beautiful bases that really bring the Japanese feel to life. Great stuff.

Post by: Flapjack

Hey thanks guys!

I almost ordered the lightbox but decided against it. I'm moving in a couple months so I'm trying not to get even more stuff which I will also need to move. Great excuse to work on that leadpile though.

Work on the Test of Honour project continues though. I have finished three miniatures waiting for basing. There's another one in progress as well.

First is a geisha. I don't have a lot of experience with this skin tone but it turned out ok. Luckily she has a fan to shield her awefull attempt at make up

Next is another samurai, maybe the geisha's loyal guardian while travelling?

There's also another Sohei, armed with a fighting staff, to bolster their numbers. I could't get the coat right but looks oke from a distance.

Then there is this Ronin, armed with a tetsubo, a club. Decided to match this one's paintjob with the masked one I did earlier. These will form the start of a new clan. I have a bunch of the older plastic ashigaru laying around that I want to use for this. These will be slightly converted.

Still WIP for now.

Now, let's get back to painting.

Thanks for the kind words guys!

Sorry for not updating lately. We bought a house and are currently packing and making ready for the move. Packing up al my older projects made me excited for them again. I should really finish that Warcry starter soon

All of my hobby stuff is packed away now so there will be no updates for the next few months. Our new place will have a room for I can use just for my plastic crack addiction so I am looking forward to getting that up and running.

The hobby room will sadly not be a priority though so the brushes will see no use for the coming months.

The free time is used to read up on and prepare a new RPG called Forbidden Lands. Exciting stuff as well!

See you soon I hope.

Cheers!

Hello there, General Kenobi.

been busy for a while. moving to our house, doing some minor renovations and we recently had our second baby too. Things are settling down for a while and we took a break from working around the house. While everyone was sleeping I took the chance to set up my new hobby desk.

It's not optimal yet but at least I can get to painting again, given some quiet moments. Currently typing this out while the youngest is napping on my chest. as you can see the basics are there but I'll need some beter organisation, Maybe some shelves or something, I'll see. Looking forward to picking up the Test of Honour project again (and probably be distracted a couple of times)

Another new resolution will be to check in more often, hopefully.

My next update will contain some real hobby content, promise!

Thank you Captain Brown!

Luckily for me, my oldest who is 2 years now, likes to paint and draw. We set him up with a little kid sized desk of his own. We got him some cheap paints and brushes and paint away he did! He painted one of his toy knights, which I have snuck away and is now displayed on my painting desk.

Almost has a good first coat, no? Maybe I'll have a little painting buddy soon, who knows!

While he was painting and drawing away, I managed to finish up these two miniatures. Felt good to paint again, even better to finish models I've started on more then a year ago. Two Ronin, painted and based ready to lead warbands of their own.

Next up on the desk are some Ikko Ikki, to bulk out their Sohei buddies. A lightbox is also long over due, I'm looking into building one myself with some small led light strips.

Thanks for dropping by!

Thanks Syro! So far so good, he's painted some more toy soldiers since last update. Meanwhile, I have gotten some painting time in.

I went to a trip to the local hardware store. Turns out led strips are pricey. I've checked Wayland games if they have one on offer and they sell a complete lightbox for the same price I'd get just the led strips for. I need some more basing materials soon so I'll make sure to include the lightbox in my next order.

Time for pictures! Finished a Ninja and a bow armed samurai. The ninja is equiped with throwing weapons and a grappling hook, next to the katana on his back

For the next few samurai I will paint, I'll choose a more colourfull scheme. I have some colours I want to try out more.

Thanks for checking in!

Cool to see your son getting into the painting, hope it lasts. Maybe give him an Orc/k next given his liking for green!
Your models are looking great, I like the muted colours of the last few models

Post by: Flapjack

Thanks Maharg. Orks might be a good idea. He's been painting with a lot of greens and reds. Might have to face off some speedfreaks with my Tau in a couple of years Wouldn't say no to that.

I've finished the Ikko Ikki. The leader was a pain in the butt to paint, the hand holding his staff must have fallen off a dozen times during painting. He's only in the group shot in the hopes you wouldn't see the massive glue glob around his hand. Struggled a bit to get the best lightning in winter, but the light box is on it's way, together with some more hobby goodies. And now it's picture time.

First the group shot of the Ikko Ikki, these guys are now ready to help their Sohei buddies fight off the clans and bandits.

Central is the special character, forgot what his abbilities are though. The cards are still packed away somewhere.

Next up are some Ikko Ikki with improvised weapons, sat on a multibase. They can come off as well and be played seperatly.

Then there is the bamboo spear armed group.

When I look at these pictures, painting faces is surely not my specialty.

Last is a Geisha with a banner. Not Ikko Ikki related, but can be allied with. Chose to do a simple freehand of a flower. Simple but effective if I may say so.

I have some Tengu on the workbench for my next project. Aso looking forward to using the lightbox.

Thanks for dropping in!

Thank you Warboss!

I have some very small updates to show. The first of the tengu is finished and I wanted to test out the new light box. I still have to do the base and paint up his four buddies ofcourse. Very happy with the lightbox too, finally some better pictures to show. Some minor tinkering still needed I think.

I also put together a small roadside shrine. The kit is a hokora set sold by ttcombat. Really easy to assemble and it comes in a set of three. First one is finished, now I'll have to look into changing up the other two as to not have three exactly the same ones. Lovely kit of scatter terrain though!

I also dug up my terrain as it was still in boxed for the big move. Everything made it in one piece except for the Torii gate. Seems to taken to much weight and ended up bending. Luckily i have a spare to assemble!

Thanks for visting.

Thanks Captain Brown!

I ordered some modules from Hobbyzone and I'd recommend them to keep your desk organized. They take some time assembling but it's worth it. I had some modules from Vallejo but the Hobbysone stuff is far superior IMO. Definatly placing another order in the future. Decided to keep assembling a while longer and put together some more terrain I had laying around. All this stuff is from TTcombat and I'm already eyeing up one of their newer sets.

Also managed to get some painting done. The first of three roadside shrines is done along with some miniatures. First up is a naginata armed samurai.

Then there are a couple of bandits.

And the first three Tengu are done too.

My lightbox looks to be flickering, I'll need to look into a fix for that. Thanks for visiting!

Merry christmas everyone.

The hollidays and the kids have left me with close to no hobby time, so it's good to finally have another sit at the paintingdesk.

Nothing much to show yet, just some paved roads I did. Added some vallejo mud effects and greenstuff world's autumn leaves spread out a bit, makes it look well traveled in my opinion.

I have about 80 cm completed already and the plan is to double it in the future. For now I'm done tiling though.

I have some more scatter terrain for Test of Honour on the bench and a couple bandits too. Finishing stages, so I'll have something new to show soon. My order also came in, Takeda's court and some courtyard walls from ttcombat.

Thanks for popping in!

This is a great project, mate. Love to see it expanding into terrain - the shrines and roads are a nice addition.

The colours are bright and beautiful and these minis are full of character. The rose on the geisha's banner and the beefy shirtless ronin are some of my favourites.

So cool that your boy is painting now too. I loved when my kids went through that phase - everything took twice as long, but at least I could pass off hobby time as family time!

Congrats on finishing the breachers too - they look great, the green is a nice addition to the usual tan/orange and I love the idea of bare feet - have never seen that before and it just works.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Tzurk, those are some very kind words.

My oldest now finds it more interesting watching me paint then doing it himself. But lile you said, still family time!

The breachers were tiring to paint, in a way. I decided to batch paint 10 at a time. This takes up way too long for my liking and gets me worn out. Painting singles or 2 to 3 at a time is mich more rewarding for me.

Speaking of 3, here are some bandits I finished comparing who has the highest local bounty.

See you next time!

Hello!

time for some wip shots to show that I'm still alive. Been playing a lot of rome II total war, that gave me the urge to start some ancient greeks. Spartans to be precise. I've finished up the test model and I have three more in the WIP stage.

As you can see they are mounted on 20mm bases. A mistake, It was late. Planning on transfering them to 25mm.

Furthermore are some japanese minis. Townsfolk, bandits and Tengu. All of these are also in the WIP stage.

I have been distracted playing War of Rights on PC lately. planning some ACW minis in the far future because of it. I'll have to lower the pile of shame first though.

Using black as a basing/undercoating color really paid off for these!

I knew a number of Napoleonic and other period gamers that would use this technique, rather than wash with black or brown ink afterwards- the effect is very striking.

Rock on!

Glad the spartans are to your liking, wanted them to look colorfull yet worn. Anyone have tips to paint battle damage on bronze shields?

I'm still undecided on how I want to base these.

I have purchased a copy of Men of Bronze. Ten men units seems to be how it's played. I have yet to give it a good read though.
