Hey! So I decided that with all the new chaos stuff coming out, it was a great time to build a completely obsolete army with OOP models. Nobody ever accused me of being too smart....
So it all started with my buddy L. Parker Gibson finding the old chaos marine squads in a random hobby shop for $20, and I went a little crazy from there. 90% of the army is NIB, and I felt really bad about these old models having never been assembled, let alone played in a game!
Now, for big projects like these, you need the right supplies. And that means Diet Dr. Pepper. Can't be finished without it!
So the lore behind the army is that after the heresy they got caught by Trazyn the Infinite and held in stasis for 10,000 years. They just happened to break out when the Cicatrix Maldictum (or whatever it's called) tore through the galaxy. So now they are out and about in a very different universe, and they don't like what they see...

Converted an old Chaos Squat in Exo armor to be my warpsmith. Chopped up a techmarine and a weapon sprue, but I think he turned out pretty good.
Alternate angle.
I forgot how much of a pain in the butt the old metal vehicles were to put together!
Here's the progress so far today. Got a few dreadnoughts, a predator, chaos lord, 5 Terminators, warpsmith, sorcerer, and a bunch of chaos marines.
Probably keep at it for a bit more, and I'll almost be able to start painting!

Post by: MegaDave
Not much of an update, but I got the whole army assembled and based! Ready for paint as soon as it gets above freezing.
And the legions of chaos androids who will be my cultists.
Here's the list just in case anyone is interested. I haven't pointed it out fully but I think it's just north of 2,000 points. Probably not the most effective army, but I wanted to showcase as many 2nd ed. models as I could. I'm going to channel my inner Nigel Stillman and cherish the once in a million win!
Chaos Lord in Terminator Armor w/ Combi Melta & Power Maul
Chaos Sorcerer w/ Force Sword
Chaos Squat Warpsmith
Chaos Marine Squad x 5 w/ Champion with Powerfist, Flamer
Rhino w/ Combi-bolter
Chaos Marine Squad x 5 w/ Champion with Powerfist, Flamer
Rhino w/ Combi-bolter
Chaos Marine Squad x 10 w/ Champion with Chainsword, Icon, 2 X Missile Launcher
10 Chaos Terminators w/ 2 Combi-flamers, 2 Combi-meltas, 4 combi-bolters, 2 reaper autocannons, 2 power fists, 2 chainfists, 2 power mauls, 4 power axes
Helbrute w/ Twin Heavy Bolters and Power Scourge
Helbrute w/ Plasma Cannon and Power Claw
5 Havocs w/ 2 X Lascannon, 2 X Heavy Bolter

Predator w/ Twin Lascannon, 2 X Lascannon

It is a pleasure to watch, but even single memory of pain assembling chaos dreadnought (god, I had to replace it couple times before my local store provided non-curved enough to even try to assemble it) is so excruciating that i’d rather watch it from distance. Predator wasn’t pleasurable experience as well.
But even more that Dreadnought I hated old chaos spawn with lots of metal tentacles. I was 12 back then, and my life hadn’t prepared me for such horrors. Metal glue wasn’t even closely enough to get this thing together.
Still have old terminators, though... also aspiring champion and several squads of daemons from the old age. Metal furies, letters and plaguebearers aren’t that old, but I rarely see other players bring them on table nowadays.

Today I managed to get them all primed, I feel like my index finger is going to fall off! But that's because the flesh is weak!
Finally starting to look like they might be an actual army...
I'm glad everyone is enjoying the throwbacks, they are just as frustrating to put together today as they were back in the day. It was a strangely satisfying experience though!
Hopefully I'll be able to update more frequently now that I don't have to worry about the weather.

Lovely 2nd Ed goodness!
Good luck with all of those stripes.
Hope you don't mind if offer some advice - please forgive me if you don't need or want it; start with black, then work up with grey to white, then wash with yellow. Working with the black and white lets you fix your errors, and add some depth to the white. When everything is good, wash yellow. A glaze over the top can be good too.

Retro wonderfulness!
You’ve captured the era perfectly. From the hazard stripes to the goblin green.
I’m sure there are better guides out there, but I used painter’s tape for my one foray into stripes. Cut one long strip the right width, and then alternated placing and then placing and removing them so I used the tape as a spacer to make sure all the stripes were parallel and uniform. I know you can get thin rolls of tape for smaller then tank applications. Or just cut your own with a ruler and a hobby knife.
But who am I to tell and Iron Warrior how to hazard stripe!

I was going the cultist route simply because of the base size, and for fluff reasons. Were androids really tough back in the day?
Basically these Iron Warriors need disposable troops, and the only materials they have to make them out of are aluminum.
Plus, they are plastic, so they are obviously not as strong as the metal models in the army. Pewter within, pewter without!

The Iron Warriors are complete! It's been a fun six months, but I am happy to be done!
First up is the full army shot!
Everybody got the original decals, not bad for being 20 years old! (I had some real problems with these, some of the decals were breaking apart from old age!)
Action shot of a predator with an infantry escort.
The Chaos Lord leads his terminator bodyguard and some deranged dreadnoughts into a breach in the enemies lines.
Heavy guns blast the enemy apart.
