What old miniatures do you think still look amazing today. By amazing I mean, compared to new miniatures it doesn't look worse at all, maybe even better.

For me it's Drazhar and the old metal Raveners from 2nd-5th edition (miss me with those 2015 generic Raveners)

Nearly everything by Juan Diaz still looks great today, even if the style of the unit changed (Daemonettes, etc.), the sculpts themselves are awesome.

A lot of the old Space Marine Captains (Terminator, Command Squad Captain with SB, DA Azrael) still look good today, even if too small for newer plastic Marines.

IMO the metal grey knight terminators had a better look than the plastics in places - same style but no need to compromise for the multi-part kit.

The old 2nd ed sisters also look just as good as those on the website today too :p

Old Typhus looks much better than the new one.
It has a lot to do with the ridiculous pose of the new version, though. I've seen nice conversions of the new one that look on par with the old masterpiece.

The old metal Space Marine captains released in 1990 still stand up, I think. As are the four Chaos marines made by Jes Goodwin around the same time.

- Black Templar Characters
- Terminators themselves; I think the plastic kit has been around since 4th Edition and it's still in my opinion a great kit.

100% going for Typhus on this one, his old model was a lot better than the new one.

+1 on metal scouts, they were awesome.

The old ork deff dread (metal, again). it has the simplistic ruggedness which orks were brilliant for. The newer kits seem to have a lot of frills and decoration. General rule - if it breaks off in a carry case, it would break off with an ork driving it!

IMO, Ork minis looked much better in the Rogue Trader era when they were based on Paul Bonner's and Dave Gallagher's art, rather than the gorilla-looking brutes we got from 3rd edition onwards. Orks were my first 40K army, but I abandoned them when the style changed. Can't stand the modern Ork models.

Necron Warriors and Destroyers.

Their sprue design leaves quite a bit to be desired, but once you've assembled them, their aesthetics still look great.
If they ever get a redesign to replaces the green rods with the tube thingies that Immortals and Ghost arks have, I hop the overall aesthetics stay the same, just with better sprue placement and poses.

The main problem of Typhus is the pose. The model itself is fine and just as good as its predecessor. Change the pose and he looks as excellent as he should.

Eldar was my first army back in 2nd edition and the first character I picked up was Maugan Ra. Such a boss, and I agree he still looks great today. And the Warlocks too. Not as big of a fan of Asurmen but he works

What really drew me to Eldar back then though was Warp Spiders. Now THEY sure didn't pass the test of time.

To me, the golden age was probably mid-late 90's, mostly Jes Goodwin. GW's worst period was early-mid 2000's...when they were ramping up production but brought in some really weak sculptors (see: last gen. Plague Marines, Obliterators, the quickly abandoned Aspect Warrior revamp, etc.)

100% agree, I really can't stand the Scions just because they're a downgrade. If the Scions were something else I probably wouldn't mind them although their chestplate is silly garbage.

But I also loved Storm Troopers back in their 3rd ed. release. I'd find it difficult to pick a favourite between Storm Troopers and Kasrkin.

Kasrkin were what? 2006? So I can't really call them "old". Old to me is pre-2000

oof---I would have used that as an example of a model that has aged the worst. It's got that classic "look at these weapons I found while I'm trying to poop" pose and horrific proportion that kept me away from 40k back in the day.

IDK how old Telion is but he's resin so he has to be at least round 8 years old? His pose and proportion and detail all look great.

I was always a fan of the old vindicare assassin, the one looking down the rifle with his foot on an ork skull. The rest of the new plastic assassins are generally improvements IMO, but the metal vindicare still looks great and has a better pose.

That is a good one. Artel W makes a great homage to that classic that I've been meaning to pick up.

The thing I really like about the Kasrkin is that they still looked like guardsmen. Their armour just looked like a bulkier version of the armour worn by the standard Infantry.

In contrast, Scions have this weird pseudo-medieval armour that looks like someone ported a AoS model into 40k. I also hate all the extra crap on them (the antenna, the searchlight, the rucksacks etc.). I knw you can cut some of them off, but I don't see that as a point in their favour.

No no, it's just that particular version of the Hive Tyrant. Mostly because it looked like an overgrown Tryanid Warrior and I like those models too, it was nice that the major synaps creatures were consistent.

Also, almost everything in Tyranid line that existed at the time that particular HT came out is still in production. The only thing I'm sure has been replaced is the Carnifex model from that time-frame.

For fun building the 3rd edition+ marines, I can just sit there bashing them for hours.

In fast any of the 2000s era plastics are just a lot of fun to mix and match.

And of course I have to put in a good word for my current obsession, the Adeptus Arbites.

For me it's the 2nd edition Eldar Warlocks and the Falcon. I've seen a couple of mentions of the Vyper here, but the Falcon came out just 1 year later at the tail end of 2nd - 1997 I think? Hard to believe that it's 22 years old. I think on both of those the vehicle itself holds up but the crew not so much - and they're less prominent on the falcon, especially if you paint the canopies.

Also the terminator chaplain that has already been posted. I was so pleased when I managed to get a metal one on ebay for a reasonable price.

That pose is just commanding. Makes me think of Captain America. It don't matter what is going on around him....he is calling out some foe and leading his brethren to war.

Yessir.

I love the Falcon. It’s what got me to start Eldar, and the WD where it premiered is the first one on the shelf. Aesthetically, it’s a solid today as when the bonesingers first crafted it. But those sprues need to be recut desperately. Mold lines, soft details, and as you mention, the crew could use an update. Now it does still hold up, and I’d rather they put the effort into plastic aspect warriors. Many of the old Eldar plastics are like that. Old, serviceable, but compared to what they can do today, showing their age.

Azrael, still an awesome sculpt even after all these years.

Lord Solar Macharius. Best looking IG officer then and now.

All the old metal guard are miles better than modern miniatures.

Honestly Azrael, Asmodai and Ezekiel were all super solid sculpts. Really iconic.

I just found out that the Falcon is from the 90s in another thread.

That.

It's one of the best looking models out there. How the hell is it from the 90s?

The reality is that tech advanced, but art doesn't "advance" with time. Computer generated models may allow more options and better/crisper multi-part plastic kits, but there are loads of 90's miniatures which are aesthetically far superior to later offerings (particularly GW's "Dark period" as I term it - the early-to-mid 2000's where sculpts got REALLY poor...).

Mutilators...Obliterators...old school Plague Marines...the quickly forgotten Aspect Warriors which were so gak they re-sculpted almost immediately, etc....yep!

A lot of the Necrons were from around that period and some of those are pretty great. The Warriors, Destroyers, Nightbringer and the first (far superior) Flayed Ones. I still prefer the clean lines of the Monolith over the over-teched Obelisk.

....

The 90's Boxnaught is still the best Dreadnought.

You are an evil person.
I have a squad of those guys painted... horrible, so ugly they almost look good.
You are talking about the bat-wing packs right??
Ah, the tapered and hooked backpacks... nevermind, they are good...

Anyway, I really liked this Mordenheim model:

Bertha Bestraufrung Sisters of Sigmar

I converted her as an Inquisitor for my 40k army (not shown here), the detail on the model is quite good.

I couldn't quite figure out if her arse was hanging out. It looked like that in the blurry photos I could find, but I decided against it.

Actually it does when I think about it more.
I painted it over as "appropriately" tight clothing but yeah I guess it could go the other way.
I mainly liked how armored up she was.

I'll definitely echo the chaplain in Terminator armour and the kasrkin.

I remember walking past a GW as a kid, seeing a poster in the window with a load of kasrkin on it and being immediately hooked by them. And that's how I got involved in 40k.

The fact that GW redid that kit without changing anything suggests that they agree with you.

Truth. Just because you are transitioning an older metal sculpt to plastic does not mean you need to do radical changes.

The old metal guy in the middle could pass for a “modern” plastic one until you put him into a sock to beat someone to death with.

Modern in quotes because that kit is getting a little long in the tooth. Not that it’s bad; it’s aged very well. But they are doing so much more with sprue layout and design these days. I feel it could use a nice recut, add more options, tighten things up a bit. They could probably wrap the basic, venerable, and ironclad all together and still keep the frame count the same.

I've always loved the Classic Dark Angels Captain, depending on how it's painted, though I was never a fan of the metallic green that whoever painted the original GW example used.

The newer metal/finecast rendition is a good one, and I'd love to get one (even though I have the original classic one) but I hate doing cloaks and I think putting that cloak on let the model down a little...

Looking back through White Dwarf there's a lot of the models of 2nd edition 40k that still hold up today and I look at some of the new stuff today and they're a bit "meh".

Can't find a picture of the original GW example, but I did come across this nice example via Google, don't know who's it is though -

For me the one that has the best age/awesome ration has to be the RT era Ordo Mallus Inquisitor in the Y pose.

I've painting a few over the years and love them all. Such presence! Such a great hat! So much stuff but without being overdone! And he has that early RT Giger feel that was lost.

I have a soft spot for so many random figures, one of which is the Blood Claw Sergeant from the 2nd edition squad. Someone even painted a retro-version up which is nostalgia filled for me.

I wish we had more Farseer sculpts that weren't wielding weapons like this one. Their strength comes from their minds, not their guns or blades.
