Game Of Thrones: Painting ASOIAF Miniatures Game. Targaryen's. @ 2019/05/10 11:20:30

Post by: ListenToMeWarriors

Hello, and greetings to my new blog following my journey painting the "A Song Of Ice and Fire" miniatures game, or ASOIAF for not very short. This is based more upon the books rather than the HBO tv series but there is obviously a lot of crossover. I am primarily a 40k painter but really liked the look of this game and the miniatures and decided to take it on as a labour of love as my better half adores the IP, she can cope with the incest and exploding heads of the tv series a lot better than my sensitive self can.

Anyway after looking into which ways to get into the game I thought there was none better than the Stark vs Lannister starter set, and it is a biggie:

I also made a small additional purchase of Lannister heroes 1:

All told the starter contains a whopping 103 minaitures, 55 Lannister and 48 Stark. They are pre made in a hard plastic, I was wary of this but am really impressed with the miniatures in hand. They are detailed, have no bendy or broken parts either. Clean up was minimal, just the odd mould line in similar places on the miniatures and the odd connection point from the casting process. The clean up involved a sharp hobby knife and minimal time. I am sure that the odd mould line will pop up during the painting process but I will deal with them when I come to it.

Anyway, onto the armies:

Lannister:

Stark:

And a close up of Lannister Heroes #1:

And the first miniature I will paint, The Hound:

There are only 4 unit types in the game, infantry, cavalry, monster and siege weapons and they all come on movement trays. Infantry are set at 12 models, Cavalry 4 and the other two 1 each. Such as:

Infantry Umber Berserkers:

Monster: Grey Wind:

For those interested here are a few Space Marine size comparisons:

The Big Guy of the set The Mountain even towers over a Primaris Marine:

Another hero, Greatjon Umber is comparable in size:

Apologies for a rather dull update, but I hope that gives you an idea about the box set, the miniatures and the direction I will be taking.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks for popping in Flapjack, hope you enjoy it.

So I made a start on a few of the character miniatures, first up is the Direwolf Grey Wind. A very simple miniature to paint as it was mainly drybrushing with the odd wash. Overall I am happy with the result, I think he looks pretty close to the reference shots that I found on the internet. So here he is:

And here he is on his movement tray:

The movement trays are really cool, I had fun doing a winter themed base for him. I used the army painter snow effect and a couple of different types of grass tufts. I am painting the "game" elements of the bases in the relevant House colours so a blue/grey in the case of the Starks:

Next up is Catelyn Stark...overall I am not too happy with this one. I feel like she is just missing something but cannot really put my finger on what and the face is a bit meh. I may revisit her but we shall see:

As for The Hound I am much more pleased. I am really happy with his face, especially the burnt left half of his face. Obviously not a big colour palette here but I am happy:

And here are the three of them together:

And an early WIP of who is up next:

Thanks for looking.

Looking good ,

I think Caitlin Stark needs the dog next to her, she’s got a stink face going (well painted, just looks like she caught a whiff of a wet dog).

I keep looking at the game, Miniaturemarket has copies in the retail store for $85, and I have been really tempted to grab a set..or two.

Very interesting. I have paid almost zero attention to this line. The scale shots are surprising. The models are a bit larger than I would have thought. Your work on them is great. The colors are a bit subdued compared to your other work, but it really fits the setting and the models. Looking forward to the rest.

I had no idea this was a thing. If it were more inspired by the show rather than the books I would have to get some, but I think I have enough on my plate for now.
I'll keep an eye out for your progress as time goes on.

@ Theo: Ebay may be a good place to look as copies were given out free with Adepticon goodie bags. That said $85 is good, in comparison I paid the equivalent of $110. but you may have your hands full with Shadespire.

@Youwasshock: They are definitely nearer the 32mm spectrum rather than the 28mm of old. Palette wise the Starks will be sombre, the Lannister's less so as you shall see.

@Nerull: Welcome! I think going the book route was probably better with the tv series about to end. Then again who knows when, or if, George R. R. Martin will ever finish the books.

So have gotten another character done, Tywin Lannister The Lord Of Casterly Rock. Generally I am pleased with how he turned out. Favourite is his red laquered armour painted using BFTBG (Blood For The Blood God) over gold. The face is alright as well, but there was not much sculpted detail so had to use a few red and purple medium mixed washes. The cloak I am less happy with, red is always an pain to highlight as I do not want to go too far down the yellow or pink spectrum. But here he is:

I have started work on my first infantry unit, The Mountain's Men that fall under the Lannister banner. The unit is comprised of 12 models, with 4 of the same sculpts including a standard bearer. Early WIP on these:

At least I have the movement tray done :

Thanks for looking.

Tywin looks cool. Very regal. The lacquered effect really works.

Tywin looks very legit, great lacquer, and cool way of pulling it off. Maybe it helps that Tywin is one of my favorite bastards from the series

All your crew is looking good as well. Even though she is very blue, I dig your Cat in particular, nice regal low fantasy Lady. I suspect I wouldn't have guessed it was Catelyn Stark if I saw her in a lineup, but we can blame HBO for that I suppose.

Just generally, it's cool to see somebody working through the ASOIAFMG range - I play Kings of War and a couple years back this game was hailed as the death of KOW and all other ranks-n-flanks fantasy games. Popular and developed IP, focus on regiments with support from known heroes, plastic minis and a decent pricepoint (I think? I didn't pay attention to the KS or however this was funded) had a lot of people worried / intrigued. I can safely say neither those hopes nor fears really panned out.

These sculpts are surprisingly good!

Game Of Thrones: Painting ASOIAF Miniatures Game. Targaryen's. @ 2019/05/16 12:41:32

Post by: ListenToMeWarriors

@Youwasshock: I am a big fan of the Tywin sculpt, very regal, very poised. I am not sure whether to use the laquer on Lannister rank and file but I will see.

@Boss Salvage: Not sure why people thought this would be the death of KOW. It really lacks the high fantasy of that game with no Dwarves, Elves, goblins et al and there is limited crossover of armies.

The NCU and Tactics area of the ASOIAF game also has no real equivalent with KOW. I think KOW was a great game for those sad of the loss of Warhammer Fantasy whilst the polls I have seen show that ASOIAF has about 25% of its player base as people who have never played miniature wargames before. That seems unusually high to me and is largely because of the IP. There is plenty of room for both systems to thrive and flourish.

@Flapjack: That is my favourite of the sculpts as well, I think it is his measured "you come at me, and you will die" pose.

@ Gwyn Chan 'r Gwyll: I have been very impressed, and by all accounts the newer factions (Night's Watch and Freefolk) are even better.

To match my Lannister heroes 1 I bought Stark heroes 1 for £17 odd.

That is Summer, Brynden Tully, Roderick Cassel, Edward Stark, Homeland Reed and Bran and Hodor...you can never have too much in the painting queue!

Because of you I bought a lot of lannister models! Love the job you have done so far.
I don't play just collect so putting together a lannister army to paint, the majority of the models look like they are good quality.

@Marxist Artist: Any chance that you can let CMON know so that they can send me some commission for sales?

Have gotten the Mountain's Men of House Clegane done, my first unit. Game wise the unit cost 6pts, games are usually played at the 30/40/50pt level. These are definitely a tabletop level standard paint job with the aim being the overall look of the unit being good rather than the individual models. I am happy with them in that regard and really like how they look as a unit, so here they are:

When characters are added to the unit they are added at the far front left of the unit. This means that if the unit lasts in combat to the last man that the character (or unit attachment) is the final wound to go. Here they are with Tywin:

Here are a few solo shots, but do not expect much:

Not really sure what I will be painting next, but I guess that is part of the fun.

Thanks for looking.

The mountain's men look good, especially with Tywin included. I'm looking forward to Hodor.
As much I as I love the books, the show just seems more recognizable. I'm still tempted by the Night's Watch and Wildling armies though.

In fact, I ended up purchasing a box of Wildling Raiders the day after originally making this post. The company should indeed throw a bit of commission your way. They're a bit too big to use as cultists as I had hoped, and it would be nice if there was one more sculpt included so there wouldn't be so many doubles, but I still like them. I almost got the Night's Watch starter set, but I mostly just wanted Jon Snow and Ghost. Please let us know what you think of the game rules if you get a chance to play.

@Nerull: congratulations on your purchases, the Night's Watch starter is almost impossible to track down in the UK at the moment as CMON's distribution is not the best. Am planning on a game, sans NCU's and the Tactics deck, this week so will let you know.

@Youwasshock/Theophony: You are both too kind.

@Flapjack: Not sure about that the set is 103 miniatures after all. That said I am 18 miniatures down, so nearly a fifth done.

@CMON: They probably would not have the stock to send them anyway

Have made a little more progress by starting with some House Umber Beserkers, these guys would make suitable Vikings for any army and I think they look kind of cool. They are all neutral tones bar their red jerkins. I got 4 done yesterday but with the work week to come I *hope* to get them done this week:

@Marxist Artist: Not a chance

So what are my purchases here? I REALLY like the neutral faction Bolton miniatures so bought some Flayed Men, they are a heavy cavalry unit and look awesome. The Tully Sworn Shields are another Stark unit, and probably my favourite sculpts in the range thus far. Lannister Heroes 2 is Joffrey Baratheon and his 7 Kingsguard. All of these are named characters including Jaime Lannister and Barristan Selmy. This can either be fielded as a whole unit, including Joffrey or the individual characters can be added to other units as unit attachments or Joffrey can be an NCU. Finally I have the Free Folk starter set which is 44 miniatures, including Lady Val, Craster, Mance Rayder and Tormund Giantsbane. Unit wise are 2 Savage Giants, 2 trays of Raiders and 1 tray of Freefolk Trappers. I may await the release of Contrast paints to quicken the painting process, but we shall see. Phew. If anybody wants any pictures of the sets just ask and I will put them up.

Progress wise I GoT my Beserkers done, as with The Mountain's Men the overall unit look is the main thing I am going for here and I am happy in that regard. The red also breaks up the mainly Blue /grey of the Stark army. This marks 26 models from the starter set done so just over a quarter of the box painted up, I am very happy with that. I am going to reward myself by painting up a few characters just to break up the grind.

Currently on the table I have a very WIP Bran and Hodor as well as basically undercoated Stark Sworn Swords:

Thanks for looking.

There's a Free Folk faction now?? *deep breaths, backs away from his credit cards*

Bolton heavy flail cav sound awesome, and I'm impressed by the Kingsguard unit/hero mechanics. Lots of cool units and concepts going on that I had no idea were in this game, having lost track of it post-KS

EDIT: Your painted lads are looking very nice. On the tray itself, is that divot there simply to help pick up the unit? Smart if so.

@Boss Salvage: The game and its mechanics came to me out of left field as well, and yep the divots are molded for ease of moving and pivoting units.

@ Marxist Artist: Any progress is better than no progress. Any pictures of them?

Have begun work on my Stark Sworn Swords but more importantly have gotten Bran and Hodor finished, I really enjoyed painting the Stark palette and am pretty chuffed with how they came out. Need to get the Direwolf Summer done to support them as well.

Have also taken a couple of shots of the Free Folk Savage giants for scale:

The Beserkers look great and Hodor looks even better. I'll be interested to see how you paint the wildings as I've not completely settled on a scheme yet. Thanks for showing a scale shot of the Giants.
Part of me wishes I had tried to get their starter set instead of just Raiders, except I don't like the rock on the club of the second one. I did go back for the Night's Watch set though. I hope to be starting Ghost later today.
Joffrey and his Kingsguard will be cool to see as well.

Thanks everyone, apologies for the radio silence over the past few days but I have been busy working and painting. Currently I am working on some Lannister characters, namely The Mountain and Cersei. But what have I done in the meantime?

First up is Bran's Direwolf Summer:

I based him upon this image as there are not a lot on the internet:

I think I did a pretty fair job of copying the look of him and he looks good next to Greywind as well.

Next up is "The Greatjon" Greatjon Umber:

He looks pretty cool when attached to the unit of Beserkers as well, and you can see why he is known as "Great":

Carrying on the Stark love I have done a unit of Stark Swornswords, so another full unit tray done. I am not completely sold on the blue/grey colour of the unit but as a whole they look alright:

Finally for today I have done a Lannister NCU in the form of "The Imp" Tyrion Lannister. Not a lot to work with here but I am happy with it, photographing him was a pain. His face seems a bit washed out here but it looks better in person, honest.

That takes me to just over a third of the starter set painted thus far, 40 of 103 models So I am happy with the progress in less than a month. You know what that means, group shots!

After I have done my Lannister characters I will probably take on a non starter set unit, either Tully Sworn Shields or Lannister Heroes 2. We shall see. As ever, thanks for looking.

@Theophony: Let me know how you get on with it. Personally I have seen 1 episode of GoT, the last one!

@Marxist Artist: Any pictures? Would love to see your work. My speed? A few factors...no kids, only working 36 hours a week and a very understanding girlfriend! But really I just get on with it. It is so easy to waste hours looking at screens and doing nothing, just set aside time to paint and things will get done. My main motivation is painting stuff means that I can buy more stuff.

@YouWasShock: Cheers, the solo base monsters and characters really help break up the painting of the infantry blocks. Speaking of which...

Got a bit more progress with The Mountain and Cersei done, first up is Gregor Clegane The Mountain. So yellow, eurgh. But I had a revelation, I rarely used it before but now Lahmian Medium is my best friend for thinning washes and paint. It really helped with this yellow for multiple thin coats, and I am happy with the results:

And here he is attached to his men:

Second up is Cersei Lannister. Colour wise for this NCU I wanted something different for this Lannister so went for an Emerald Green dress. Am happy with the painting on this one, like Tyrion the pictures do not really do her justice:

So now, primarily I am a painter not a gamer, but I am determined to play this game. To that end when attending the UK Games Expo this friday I wanted to pick up a few things to pimp my gaming experience. The place for NCU game activity is the Tactics board, it looks like this:

I decided to invest in an acrylic board from Art Of War Studios, I went for a Stark themed one. To bring it up to speed all you do is rub it with some wax crayon and rub off the excess, this is the result:

And here it is with some NCU action, you also have the round tracker banner at the front:

I also picked up some acrylic core game tokens:

Show wise for ASOIAF stock the expo was a bust, very few outlets for it and Asmodee seem to be doing a traditional poor job in making stock available to retail outlets. That said I did pick up the Neutral Heroes 1 box.

Anyway, thanks for looking.

I think they have turned out great Marxist Artist, and a step up from mine in that I will not be picking out the gold banding on their armour. Your basing is great as well, good job. I bet your movement trays look, or will look, brilliant. These are easily a step or two above table top standard and never be ashamed of your work, a painted mini is always better than bare plastic. Feel free to post your Sworn Swords here if you do not feel like having your own blog.

Just starting my own unit of these today and am finding them a bit of a hard slog thus far. I will see how I get on. But the test mini is done as well as the movement tray. Avance!

The progress continues, first up are some Lannister Guardsmen, essentially the bread and butter of an average Lannister force. They are cheap, reliable and a good unit to anchor your army. As with other infantry trays I wanted the overall look to be more of an impact than the individual miniatures, initially I found these a bit of a drag but soon got into the groove of painting them. The best bit about them is the standard which is a great focal point for the unit as it draws the eye. This now brings up more than half of the starter set as painted:

Next up is my first Neutral hero, Ramsay Snow/Bolton. In games you can use neutral units to form up to 50%, but no more of an army. So say a Lannister army included Ramsay you could use him as an attachment in a unit of Lannister Guardsmen. I like this sculpt a lot, in both the books and tv show he is a true Bastard and looks like one here. Not sure if I have painted his eyes on the wonk or not though!

Finally for today is my first Freefolk model, a powerful Savage Giant. I really like this sculpt as he seems to be purposefully striding somewhere, probably to get some food. My Freefolk are going to be lots of earthy and natural tones, so browns, greys and greens mainly. I am very happy with this fella, hope you like him:

I am not really sure what I will work on next, we shall see. Thanks for looking.

That giant is all kinds of rad. You have really brought out the character of the sculpt, especially the face. Speaking of which, I don't know anything about Ramsay, but he looks like a decidedly unsavory individual.

So much progress in a short time. It all looks good, but my favorite is the giant. Still debating between buying them separate or trying to get my hands on a Free Folk Starter set. At the moment I just finished my second dire wolf, Shaggydog, but I still have too many rank and file to do before rushing out to get more.
Cersei is a great model and Ramsey looks suitably creepy. Tyrion turned out well too especially since it's a pain to work on tiny minis.

More great stuff! I love them all, but yeah, that giant is really cool. The simple red, gold and silver of the Lannister men also pops and works well. And Ramsey’s face! He looks like he’s from the movie The Shining: “Heeeeere’s Ramsey!”

When you eventually play a game with the painted models, post some photos!

@Youwashock: I would suggest that he arguably the most evil character in the series, not a nice man at all.

@Nerull: If you can get the Freefolk Starter I would recommend it even if you do not consider playing FF. Craster alone goes for £12 plus on ebay as he is very useful to Nights Watch players. It is very sensible to break up the rank and file with characters.

@Theopony: Much appreciated, are you bingeing through the series then?

@Gallahad: Indeed, I am very happy with how they turned out.

@The Riddle Of Steel: I will post game photos once I have enough for two fully painted 30pt armies, I need to work on more Lannisters really.

Anyway the Stark's move closer to being a legal and playable painted army. First up is

Lord Eddard (Ned) Stark, tv wise he is Sean Bean, his eventual fate leads to The War Of The Five Kings. Rather than being from the starter set he is part of Stark Heroes 1 and is a useful character in that he can be an attachment or an NCU. He is another one of those that I file under the "could do better" pile, but we live and learn.

Next up is his eldest daughter Sansa Stark, The Little Bird. Game wise she is a cheapish NCU at only 3pts, with some pretty nifty abilities. The sculpt is...reasonable the lack of and fingers on her hands was a bit of a pain but I am happy with her:

And here she is with Mum and Dad:

Next up Stark wise are the Tully Sworn Shields, a very heavily armoured 7pt unit for the army. The Tully's are aligned to the Stark's as Catelyn was born into the house, my favourite thing about these gents is their red and blue fish based house sigil. I am also very keen on the sculpts. Here they are:

A few close ups on their ace shields and fish scale armour:

I am pleased with those lads, just one more unit until I have a Stark army ready to roll.

Thanks for looking.

That mounted and on foot mercenary? One of the greatest sculpts ever, one hell of a miniature. Maybe that is why I like the fish boys so much?

I though I am quite bad at showing WIP stuff, it is generally raw plastic or the finished product so today is mainly WIP stuff. First up I was up early to head to my local GW store for some of the new Contrast stuff just to give it a try. This was the result:

The main reason I got those was for painting up the many Freefolk units that I have to do, so decided to do a test Raider:

He was first undercoated in Wraithbone, once dry I covered the model in the wonderfully named Gore Grunta Fur. This looked good in its own right, but you have to be really careful to make sure that the contrast paint gets everywhere. After that it was a quick coverage of grey in the relevant areas and then an overall over/drybrush of a bone colour and then pallid wych flesh. Throw on the skin and metallics and it was pretty much done to a level that I am content with. Thoughts?

So onto some WIP stuff, first up are the Stark Outriders:

These are pretty much base blocked and given the traditional Aggrax bath, I aim to get them finished tonight and tomorrow.

Next up are Lannister Heroes 2, I really want this unit on the tabletop asap. One thing you will notice from those Baratheon banners is how messy my WIP can be:

Finally are those who our Catalan friends call Jon Nieve and Fantasma (and he will forever be Fantasma to me now). Jon Snow and Ghost:

But where do I get those from, as the Nights Watch miniatures are nigh on impossible to purchase in the UK?? Thanks to the good people at reputed "excellent tax payers" Amazon UK I was able to order the Catalan language starter from Spain. Sure the cards are useless to me, but I have the miniatures:

I think I will do some more Contrast tests on the Nights Watch to see if Black Templar is any good, I have my doubts but it is well worth experimenting. Thanks for looking.

Those models look great .

I was going to wait on the contrast stuff, but I just went and bought a couple to see what a below average painter can do with them. I think I’m the target audience for them after all.

We have been binge watching game of thrones, but when I leave for work and my wife is a total home (teacher with an actual summer break ), she doesn’t wait for me, so now I have to watch a whole bunch of skipped episodes and I still haven’t seen the finale .

@Theo, I agree with you on Contrast, definitely seems like it will be a boon to those painting mass infantry armies and do not mind as long as their army can pass the four feet rule. I am itching to try the Black Templar on my Nights Watch as I am unsure if it is up to the task. I also have a lot of unpainted Deathwatch Marines as the whole process of highlighting black is just so labour intensive.

Ironic on your GoT journey, the finale is the only whole episode that I have watched.

@Youwasshock: I think it is well worth a punt, surely a couple of colours will have a place in your collection of paints?

Sloooooooow progress on Joffrey and The Kingsguard, I went traditional Kingsguard with their white mirror shields and white cloaks but I should have them ready to show off by Thursday. But two whole painted armies draw closer...

Joffrey Baratheon: Not sure if it is the light, my photography or what but he looks awful here compared to real life. May have to revisit him. Also eyes, what are people's thoughts on painting them on? In my ASOIAF minis I have just been doing the whites and no pupils, is this lazy? Poor form or any other thoughts?

Left: Ser Mandon Moore, Right Ser Preston Greenfield:

Left: Ser Arys Oakheart, Right Ser Boros Blount:

and here is 2/3rds of the unit done:

And finally my work for tonight, Jaime Lannister, Meryn Trant and Barristan Selmy:

Thanks for looking

That unit rocks. The gold and white scheme looks really good. Joffrey looks fine. I generally try to paint eyes on everything. Whites and an iris, mostly, sometimes a little catchlight if I am feeling ambitious. These look fine with just the whites. It all comes down to what you are looking for out of it. If you are satisfied, that is pretty much all that matters.

Just paint tiny dots for eyes.

Nice progress, Joeffrey looks like a dork in real life, so your model looks much better than real life .

Finally saw the last episode, some decent parts, Ute no way I understand why people said it should have played out over a couple seasons.

Kingsguard look really sharp with the white, gold and accent red. I like that they have variations in the helmets to give each one a little more individuality.

@Youwasshock: Yeah, with these I think that the whites are enough. There are fewer things more frustrating in miniature painting than continually making your character model cockeyed and having to repaint it.

@Theophony: He looks like a total dork, so slappable! I think with a show like GoT people built it up so much in their expectations that there was no way that it could live up to it.

@The Riddle Of Steel:I think because the unit is both a proper unit and each of the characters being a usable attachment means that they had to be individual, but yes it is pretty cool.

Got the unit done though:

And the Kingslayer himself Ser Jaime Lannister:

I am really happy with how the unit looks:

Have also had a play around with a couple of Contrast paints, first up with Ghost and Apothecary White over Wraithbone, a great basis for the model IMO:

Have also tested out Templar Black with a bog standard Night's Watch Sworn Brother, again a strong basis for an army based on one colour:

The cloak will certainly get another coat to make it darker, and then will pick out other colours from there.

Thanks for looking.

Nice models as always, contrast peaks my interest now, as appears to work well.
My progress is so slow compared to you, have finished 4 stark sworn swords, the hound and the high sparrow, who turned out really well, and I am working on More Lannisters now.

Game Of Thrones: Painting ASOIAF Miniatures Game. Targaryen's. @ 2019/06/22 20:09:12

Post by: ListenToMeWarriors

@Youwasshock: Yes the cloak surprised me, but I think I may have lessened the impact as I added a second coat on the areas I wanted to look darker.

@Marxist Artist: Any progress is good progress, as ever feel free to post them here. I really need to get my High Sparrow painted up as well as I am a bit short on Lannister NCU's.

Just a tiny bit of progress today, got Ghost and my first Sworn Brother done.

First up is Ghost, like the other Dire Wolves he was a really easy and fun miniature to paint up. The Contrast really helped with him, I just added a very mediumed down black wash around his face, neck and rib area to make it pop a bit more. His characteristic red eyes are a great focal point as well:

Guess that I had better do Jon Snow next.

Also got my first Sworn Brother done, given that the Nights Watch wear basically black he was pretty easy to paint, the Black Templar certainly speeded it up as well. After the base coat he got another coat on some areas. I then picked out some parts with Dark Reaper and Thunderhawk blue and others with eshin and mechanicus standard grey. Belts etc got the leather treatment and the face adds a splash of much needed colour.

Thanks for looking.

Onwards with the Night's Watch, and this time it is the 998th and 1000th Lord Commander of the Night's Watch Jon Snow. Initially I was not that keen on this sculpt but after painting him he has grown on me a lot. Again just more variations on black, grey and blue but I like it:

And here he is with the bestest of boys Ghost:

I also made more Stark progress, this time painting up my first ASOIAF cavalry unit in the form the Stark Outriders. I really enjoyed painting these lads and think they look alright overall. The Fang is proving to be a really useful basecoat for the Stark grey/blue. Unlike the infantry units these are all unique sculpts which helps given that there are only 4 miniatures in the unit.

Of all the Contrast paints, the flesh tones and the white are the only I'm really interested in. Flesh has already proven to have a ton of potential, and Ghost here pretty much ends any debate on white being extremely legit. I had held out that I didn't need to get wraithbone to undercoat it, but having seen apothecary over white and grey, the bone really does seem to be the answer. That magic combo of warm bone and cool white, or something.

Game Of Thrones: Painting ASOIAF Miniatures Game. Targaryen's. @ 2019/07/07 13:16:03

Post by: ListenToMeWarriors

@Boss Salvage: I think the Apothacary white over the wraithbone does look really well, on organic miniatures especially. I actually have an Apothecary ready to paint up for my Celestial Lions, so will see how well the combination works on power army.

So onto a rather dull update, miniatures #95,#96 and #97 of my ASOIAF painting journey in the form of two neutrals and a Lannister NCU.

First up is the neutral Lord Varys, aka The Spider aka The Master of Whispers. I really like this miniature, I went for a Burgundy and yellow combination. IMO he came out a touch bland, but todays lighting has not really helped. I also note that his left thumb appears to have been chipped of paint, at least I can go and fix that.

Next up is a very sympathetic figure in GoT, Theon Greyjoy here in his persona of Reek having been imprisoned and tortured by Ramsay Bolton/Snow. A very easy sculpt to paint as he is basically naked bar his loincloth. Poor picture ahoy:

Finally up is The High Sparrow for The Lannisters, a four point NCU played by the excellent Johnathan Pryce in the tv show. Again quite a mellow looking miniature who because of his faith only wears a dull beige/white robe.

And the three together:

Overall I am happy to have painted nearly 100 miniatures for the game in just under two months so that is pretty fair progress. Hopefully the next update sees me pass the 100 mark. I also invested in a new bureau to for me to be able to keep all my hobby gear in one place and as a place where I can sit and paint. Just need to invest in a proper lamp next:

Thanks for looking.

Once again, great job on the figures. They all look very reminiscent of the characters from the show.

My FLGS has a core set sitting in the consignment section for $90, I have to say I’m very tempted because of your work, but then I look at all the extra money I’d be spending on all the other figures and I just have to walk away. I’m also hearing great hints about the game itself which makes it even harder to pass up.

Nice painting desk there, though I fear the white may not stay that way long.

Man, it took me an age to move onto miniatures 99 and 100 for this range. After a painting slump I finally got back in the groove and went with Mance Rayder, The King Beyond The Wall and Tormund Giantsbane. Ultimately these two characters were great fun to paint, and I am very happy with how they turned out.

Enough waffle, on with the photos:

A nice natural colour scheme suited these two well, with a bit of regal gold and Tormund's distinctive red hair being nice focal points.

At least I have not bought any more ASOIAF Miniatures...

@YouWasShock: Agreed, I think the miniatures are great. They are done by the Uk's very own Dark Sword miniatures and they are generally very good sculpts.

@Gobert: There are always more to come...the pile never ends.

So I dipped in the Baratheon set and got everybody's favourite ...Renly Baratheon...drumroll please:

Renly of the House Baratheon, First of His Name, King of the Andals and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm.

I am thinking of doing the whole Baratheon set in the Green of Renly rather than the traditional yellow of his brother Stannis. I just prefer the look and it saves painting yellow. Double win. I went for a green steel to his armour using Hexwraith flame mixed with contrast medium over a highlighted silver.

I also gathered my painted collection together. 101 miniatures , not bad given that I only bought my first ones in May on a whim and also have not touched ASOIAF for a couple of months. They are also pretty much, bar the Frost Giant, normal 28mm sized infantry. Overall this covers Stark's, Lannisters, Free Folk, Nights Watch, Baratheons and neutrals. I may focus down to get a faction or two painted up fully, but we shall see:

Thanks for looking.

Cheers gents, have continued a bit more character work with a couple of miniatures from the recently released Neutral Heroes: 2 box.

First up is Bronn: The Sellsword. Not a bad sculpt overall and quite quick to paint up given I went with appropriately neutral colours on him:

And then onto the main event, arguably the best sword in Westeros, Brienne of Tarth:

"All my life men like you have sneered at me. And all my life I've been knocking men like you into the dust." Brienne to Jaime Lannister.

This sculpt is so much better than the Kickstarter exclusive one, i love it. It just shows a martial prowess that exudes class and confidence with the sword.

Have finally gotten round to my first ASOIAF miniatures painted of the year.

I got my Targaryen Starter set the other week and so made a small dent on them with some of the character models. Luckily the starter is only 20 miniatures in total so I hope to get these painted up in good time.

First up is Daenarys Targaryen. Overall not that good a job imo, but she is small with lots of fiddly detail. But she will do:

Next up is Illrio Mopatis: I love this sculpt, so jolly, so flowing and so scheming. I am very happy with the red:

Finally is Jorah Mormont:

"There's a beast in every man, and it stirs when you put a sword in his hand."

Another great sculpt, and I think I did him justice:

So next up? Dothraki...
