Have you ever dreamed of owning your own Warhammer 40,000 action figure? Of course you have! And very soon, that dream will be a reality. Read on for news of one of the most exciting alliances since the unification of Terra and Mars – Warhammer and Bandai.

Today, we can show you some of the initial designs for the first-ever Warhammer 40,000 action figure! It’s a fully painted, 7-inch-tall Primaris Space Marine, featuring multiple points of articulation, exchangeable weapons, and all sorts of other cool details, brought to life on a new scale

Bandai are, of course, world experts when it comes to action figures like this. Their team have been working directly with the miniatures designers in the Warhammer Studio, including the father of modern Space Marine design, Jes Goodwin,** to ensure that this action figure is a faithful replica of a Primaris Space Marine in Mark X Tacticus armour, every inch true to the lore of Warhammer 40,000.

We think it’s looking amazing, and we can’t wait to get one on our desk – posing him in a suitably heroic poses while we practice making the noise of a tiny boltgun firing.**

Not only that, but Bandai are also going to be producing a series of smaller figures in the Chibi style!*** These are going to be 2-inch-tall figures based on some of the Imperium’s greatest defenders – an Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor, an Eversor Assassin, a Sister of Battle, a Skitarii Ranger and a Space Marine. These diminutive heroes might seem a bit unusual to those not familiar with them, but in Japan these little guys are everywhere and a fun way to introduce more people to our great Warhammer community. For the rest of us, it’s another cool way to adorn your desk, shelf or cabinet.

All of these figures are going to be available worldwide and you’ll be able to see them for the first time this weekend! Not only will we have them at Warhammer Fest, but they’ll also be on display at Games Workshop’s stand at the Shizuoka Hobby Show in Japan.

If you like, you can read the full press release about this new collaboration now, in English and Japanese.

These promise to be just the first in a range of awesome figures created in partnership with Bandai and we’ll have more information, including how you can get your hands on them, soon! Meanwhile, it’s not too late to grab your tickets for Warhammer Fest, where you’ll be able to see loads of amazing new things, including the Space Marine action figure.

* We know we have!
**Pew, Pew!
*** Derived from a Japanese verb meaning “to shorten”, Chibi is a style of caricature based around large heads and stubby limbs. Funko POP! figures, like the new Space Marines, are another example of Chib

People have been asking for an action figure Marine for years, so I expect that to sell quite well. And one imagines there'll be stacks of repaints.

I'm not really a big fan of chibi stuff myself, but it's at least a reasonable variety for a first wave.

The action figure looks promising though.

feth... I just got a little poorer looking at the action figure announcement. Will buy. I'm not a fan of chibi anything but congrats to those who like that style getting their itch scratched as well. Now.. if only Bandai could make plastic marine vehicles similar to how they do gundam kits that are multicolor plastic, look great, are poseable, and require no glue so as to show GW how it's actually done well...

Yay, more junk.

Games, anyone? Miniatures, maybe? Not just a couple characters and two new figures buried in limited time only boxed sets.

Or are we really just going to see GW reeling off tchotchkes until 9th edition?

??? I love a good rant as much as the next guy but does anyone feel GW is putting TOO FEW games and minis?

I can't even keep up with the stuff I love. Had to say no to Titanicus, just not enough time and space.

Oh hell yes! I wonder though, is this Bandai Japan making these? If the Marine is a Figuarts, it'll be amazing. I'll need those SD figures as well. Curious if they'll be pre colored capsule toys or something else.

It irks me badly that after so many examples for games like dawn of war or space marine, GW still can't figure out how to 'sell' power armor at a larger scale. The hips and upper legs are ridiculously badly proportioned. No excuse at 7", I can't unsee it, there is an 8 ft tall 60 pound dude in that suit. Git'im a sammich!

I still quite like it but I agree, there's no real reason why they can't get proper proportions on this guy. The other Bandai ranges don't seem that limited in that regard.

If only GW took feedback on these early design images.

A Battlefleet Gothic mechacolle would be enough for me to actually take more than a passing interest in the game. I doubt it'd happen, but something like that might be enough to start piquing Japanese hobbyists' interest in more gaming scale models.

I've never understood why GW or some other company hasn't ever tried to make more of a substantial push into Japanese hobby territory. It happens every now and then but nothing seems to stick.

I like my plamo as much as the next nerd but all those kits start to take up substantial space over the years, much more than a typical wargaming model!

I might even have to break my no toy policy and pick up a marine...

It's like Terminator thighs, one you see it, you can't really not see it ever again. Which sucks, because in both cases the rest of it is awesome.

Maybe as has been posited the issue revolves around articulation, but honestly I still lean heavily to it being an approved aesthetic choice. Bandai is way too good at this stuff not to be able to figure out how to make bigger hips and uppers legs thicker than the wrists...

On the Japan front, I guess part of it is western companies just sticking what they perceive as popular, based on what sells in our neck of the woods.

GW seem to be making a determined go of it though. Space Marine Heroes is lined up for a third series, which suggests they’re getting some kind of return on the investment. And marrying up to Bandai is equally a move of a company interested in seeing what’s going to work?

This is very intriguing, Games Workshop cooperating with Bandai is the stuff of dreams! Tau Mecha Gundam is, hopefully, one step closer!

Disappointed as anybody else that they've gone for a Primaris action figure but i'll almost certainly buy one if it promotes the idea of furthering the range. Really have my fingers crossed that this is the embryonic stage of a long and fruitful partnership.

I get the impression that the Japanese scene is even more transitory than ours to for a property to remain desirable they've got to carry on pushing out new stuff even faster than most are comfortable with, and over a broader range

so even if a first release goes well they've got to keep on pushing stuff out or they vanish,

(so current GW could fit quite well)

Honestly Bandai kits are pretty damn reasonable for what you get. I predict that it is actually GW that will cause the price to go up, but if this is detailed in line with an RG or HG Gunpla, then it should be between 20-30. Because of GW I would say prob more like 35-40.

Could be well off, we'll see -

I've been wanting this for well over a decade and this is an instant buy for me. I hope the chibi style figures are along the line of Nendroids and are poseable as well.
[edit...] Well after reading the press release they are the mini single pose soft pvc toys that you get at arcades. Hopefully they are sold as a set and not all blind buys here in the west.

I really wish the figuarts (assuming it's figuarts quality) action figure wasn't primaris.

Am I alone in hating the aesthetic of the primaris marines? I like the size, but the weapons, armor, vehicles, etc are all gak imo. But I'll still buy it cause I'm a sucker.

Hopefully they sell well and consider some of the other models. An aspect warrior, wraithguard, thousand sons, are all high on my list.

The only thing I don't really like about Primaris are the helmet options.

Not sure I would buy a space marine action figure, or chibis. But If you made a line of Nurglings and squigs that I could set up creating chaos all over my office, that might be fun.

I think they should put the rules for 40k on the boxes as well. Just in case people want to collect the action figures, and play actual 40k at a larger scale with them.

Maybe Bandai will grace us with a plamo marine that's roughly the scale of most their 1/144 mech offerings or Star Wars humanoids at some future point.

I think a model kit would make both companies quite a bit of cash as well. Think of all the limited editions Bandai could paywall behind their online storefront!

It's not a model kit, so you're looking at the wrong price comparisons. It's more likely going to be priced like their Figuarts lines, so more like $60-100 USD depending on size(not just height but mass), accessories, whether it includes a stand, and so on. Most likely, it'll be in the $70-90 range like their Sentai/Kamen Rider figuarts.

To be fair, Figuarts are much better quality and infinitely more posable than McFarlane stuff which only looks good in certain poses or lacks the joints to actually hold realistic poses(looking at you, McFarlane Halo figures). In addition, they include way more accessories such as 6-10 extra hands(many of which are unique to certain characters for trademark poses), extra head/faces for various expressions, as well as pretty much any item you could think of associated with said character. For example, Tyrannoranger and Dragonranger from Zyuranger(the basis of the original Power Rangers) included a set of alternate neck and belt pieces to replicate their "Powerful Rangers" appearance in a single episode of Akibaranger.

I am honestly surprised that we haven't had a tabletop Gundam rules set, with add ons for Giant monsters, and Godzilla.... But that's just me. Have zero interest in any GW's crossovers.

As long as I can remember, I've never seen a rules set to use the models in a tabletop game.... I hope I am wrong, and it exists somewhere.

Is that chibitempestus?

Also, I thought the knee pads were supposed to bend, protecting gaps in the armour. Might be too difficult to do in that scale though. Rifle is way too thick, tho...

I think I may have seen some of them at Barnes and Noble if they're the same brand as the Star Wars samurai figs they have there. Yeah, they're very nice but not $80+ nice IMO even with the accessories. YMMV of course and I'm sure some of them will sell to 40k fans. I'll just have to wait for them to hit ebay at less than half price as it looks like some are at least judging by Star Wars samurai prices on a quick google search.

The Samurai Star Wars figs are a different series and are a bit larger. At B&N, you're looking for the DBZ, Mario, and Sailor Moon figs in the squarish boxes with window fronts.

If we can get these through Bluefin and/or Bandai America, that'll probably bring down the price to closer to the $35-60 range.

Well, that display proves that the SD figures are indeed Gashapon. Interesting.

I think it's a pretty safe bet that the Marine will be joining the FiguARTS series. Unfortunately, that means you'll likely be paying Imperial Knight level prices. Don't expect to pay under $70 USD for him. Plan on him being over $100.

Upper half of the actioin figure looks good, but so much wrong with the bottom half. Weird small groin, knee articulation, feet are oversized...hope it's just a prototype cause it needs one or two revisions.

It's what happens when you take a design that was never designed with functionality in mind (marine armor) and try to make it functional, even if only on action model scale.

No, the reason the action figure will be over $100 won't be because of GW. It'll be because it's coming from Bandai Collector's Division. Their Robot Damashii line started out at a reasonable 2,000 yen. Same with SH Figuarts. Now, if they even bother releasing them to retail instead of making them web only exclusives, you're looking at 8,000 yen easily. So that's around $80 for a 5" - 6" action figure. This Marine will easily be $100. $80 if we're lucky.

What Barzam said. All of the GW licensed stuff has been released at the standard pricing for that style of product, so expect the same here with the thing being that this style of product's standard pricing already starts that high.

Often enough the prototypes for action figures will be made at larger scales to ensure details and articulation features work as intended... Do we know how big is the figure in the picture? Do we know if it's scale is what they intend for release?

Thank you. Still a pretty hefty size; I'm sure there was some discussion back and forth about making sure these are differentiated from any miniatures.

It looks like he mixed up the Primaris marine legs with those of the mini-marines.
Am I the only person who thinks that the thigh armor looks too small? I thought the primaris proportions were great but on this figure the upper legs look pretty thin - much the same as they do on regular marines.

I'm not a chibi guy, and I don't normally care about action figures. On rare occasions I'll pick one up to put on a desk or something (had a VF-1J Valkyrie/Veritech on my desk for a long time). They'd have to do a stunning Eldar figure to get any of my attention, or a proper MkVI Beaky marine or something really classic.

Yeah, not a fan. I wish the figure got Dawn of War II treatment (where marine proportions got overhaul and weapons/armour decorations were made more realistic for human scale instead of being just ugly, blown up variants of mini decor). This image is still one of the best SM re-imaginings ever made (funnily enough making primaris-like marines a decade before actual primaris)...

It'll be approximately in-scale to Figmas. A little on the small side, considering it's a Primaris, but close enough that a shelf in one of my display cases is going to be turned into a diorama of Space Marines teaming up with and/or purging assorted magical girls. I'm not sure which way it'll go yet.

They're a line of premium figures akin to Bandai's Figuarts and in a similar scale but by a different company.

My Primaris are going to hang with my Kamen Rider and Super Sentai Figuarts.

Ork grunt with big axe and shoota
