Well another painting log...my 8th for those keeping count...I like to keep armies and themes together. Although this one will have terrain and those odds and ends that do not fit in my specific army logs.

So after a move and more storage room I plan on doing more terrain. When City Fight first came out many editions ago I build an entire Cityscape (8' x 4') out of 1' x 1' tiles.

For many years these have been moved from house to house and seen a fair bit of damage (due to storage, gaming accidents, disapproving better halves). So it is time to restore or replace them.

I also want to re-build the original Necromunda game board with towers and walkways and will likely do some of each (as many pieces can fit both game systems and tables). Some of my more recent builds in this log:

Yes, I used several of those to make the ruined shrine and for the T section roadways...now some will go back to scatter terrain as I am eliminating the roads for new stand alone ones I am crafting below.
Flapjack wrote:Looking good. Why do I feel there's a good story behind the disapproving better halves?

Flapjack, well Mrs. Captain Brown thought my modelling and painting were cute before we got married...once we moved in together they were not so cute due to the space they took up.

So the first thing I am going to build is a road, as putting the roads on the tiles limited how they could be put together. Saw a great tutorial here.

Part way through two sections of regular road. This is the in between layer which sits over the base chipboard and below the road surface foam card.

Two sections of cratered road. Again at stage two where I have the base of chipboard and the first raised portions that will sit below the road surface.

Here are two straight road sections with the foam card added and the gutters.

Here are all six sections in progress. I did this for efficiency in construction so that as I finished a pair of roads with glue, I let it dry and moved to the next pair.

More to come.

So here are the results of the first batch.

Only main flaw was that I was a little aggressive cutting back the ends of the foam card road ends. At some point in the future I will build some of the 6 inch lengths and a T section.

If you don't mind, how wide are your roads and what's your thinking behind making them that width?

Excommunicatus,

The pieces are 6 inches wide (ease in cutting a regular piece of chip board in half to make two sections), the asphalt portion is 4 inches wide and that accommodates pretty well all 40K vehicles other than Super Heavies...there is also an extra inch of gutter for those wider vehicles and the edging on the gutters is the same height as the asphalt so a Super Heavy will stay level even if some of the track overhangs the edges.

Hope that answers your question.

Sincerely,

CB

Yeah it does, thanks.

It also reinforces my plans for my (eventual) city board and the roads on it. My plan is for two lanes, each 4" wide, 'cause a Chimera is 3.75" wide.

EDIT - Although, now I think about it, that translates to a 24' wide road. Modern day allowances in Ontario for regular roads is 66'...

Excommunicatus,

To make the roads a realistic size uses up too much real-estate on the table top. So I go with the smaller size.

Now I have been trying to figure out where to post my old Necromunda that is getting a face lift for my gaming group's renewed interest in the classic version.

Thanks CommissarKhaine, I used up all my tiger stripe mojo on my Necromundian Imperial Guard.

Maharg wrote:Those Escher look great CB, nice classic paint job. That is one set of minis I wish a younger Maharg had had the foresight to buy, they still look great today and better than the current models

Thanks Maharg, perhaps a PM to Theophony with an inquiry about some unused Eschers in his collection gathering dust?

In the meantime, I found this great old Necromunda terrain site with a Ventilator made out of almost entirely bits you have at home and I just had to try it.

Link All credit goes to this completely made builder - Mister Sean Patten.
Parts
Now I do not have all the parts on hand, but figured I could use something similar...the hardest thing to locate was a radio cassette and case. Sourced from one of my gaming buddies.
So I am going to start building that next with what I have, for what I am missing I am going to improvise a little.

Given your intense attention to detail and wild scratchbuilding skills, I am pretty sure you will have zero trouble improvising something awesome for that terrain. Looking forward to it. And your Oldcromunda minis spurred me to finally finish a conversion I have had sitting around for over a year for my Pit Slaves. Now I just need to paint it!

Captain Brown Builds Terrain and Old School Metal Necromunda - Classic Necromunda Towers @ 2019/11/04 23:09:53

Post by: Captain Brown

Thanks youwashock,

I should have taken a photo prior to building, but I was too excited to start once I paid for lunch to get some old audio cassette tapes with boxes

List of parts Listed by Mister Sean Patten
One Manufactorum building panel (I did not have this so I have used a cut-up Necromunda wall)
One intact floor panel (I did not have this so I cut a square out of 0.60 mm plastic card)
Two flying buttress from the Basilica sprue
Ladder
One pipe half (I did not have this so I used an old mechanical pencil)
One bulkhead, the narrow strip with rivets on it
One globe style light
One small eagle support
One small exhaust detail
Two PVC pipe couplers size 3/4"
Two CPVC 45 degree elbows size 1/2"
One CPVC 90 degree elbow size 1/2"
Three plastic clothes pegs at least 3" long
One juice bottle Lid and the snap ring below the lid
Two pop-up water bottle tops
And of course one audio cassette tape with box

Now I started to deviate a bit from Sean's instructions almost immediately because I knew that cutting old plastic with a razor saw would be very difficult once glued together and the plastic is so old and fragile that I would not be using a clipper on it.

To make my first saw as straight as possible I used the edge of the clear screen as a guide.

As I did not have the Manufactorum building panel and could not measure I decided to maximize the amount of detail in the half of the cassette tape that was going to be displayed...so perhaps mine would be a little higher, I checked and it was still lower than the cassette case. I also wanted the hole for the cassette reel to fit with the CPVC 90 degree elbow

Fixed the image tag.

Then using my Necromunda bulkhead as a bracket I glued two halves of the cassette together and used the horizontal side as my guide for the next sawing.

Again slow and steady wins the race as the plastic is so brittle.

Finished that cut.

Now I have the L of one side and the lower roof of the station.

Now looking at the lower roof that would support the two 45 degree CPVC "vents" I noticed my cassette tape inside had some extra bits that would keep parts from being flat, so I used two halves of a plastic clothes peg and cut out portions to fit snuggly and added a piece of plastic card with some spare to fit around the cassette reel holes.

Look at the lovely industrial detail the cassette case interior has at the bottom of the photo above.

Happy with the fit I glued my L to the cassette case and the 90 degree PVC pipe.

Again there is really neat detail from the inside of the cassette that will look great after painting.

The two 45 degree COVC "vents" with the reels from the inside of the cassette fitted.

More to come as the long painting and converting war continues...

Nice job so far on the scratch building. I looked at the link you posted and that’s a nice little tutorial. It’s great to see a use for the old cassettes. I have a box of them still, but since they are mostly personalized mixtapes, I can’t bear to destroy them out of nostalgia. But there are some cool shapes and textures in a cassette that I never would have thought of. I’m looking forward to seeing your progress.

Thanks Riddle,

If I had not seen the build I would never have thought there were so many useful parts inside a cassette.

Now that I had a basic structure I started dry fitting some parts to see how they would fit together.

The two flying buttresses and the removal of some of the detail that will be covered by the side vents.

Side vents with the caps of the pop-up bottle tops removed.

Start of the rear vent that I used plastic card instead of the tile recommended.

Now all but the rear and angled top vents glued on. The terrain now has some weight to it.

For the angled vents I ended up adding the little parts that came out when I removed the tape.

Angled vents glued on and another clothes peg cut up for end detail and some of the Imperial icons.

Two more clothes pegs, ladder, part of a plastic pencil, lamp, old Hunter Killer Missiles hatch ends and other parts added.

Other angles, now I still have to complete the rear vents and add it for more structural strength.

More to come.

Getting back to the ladies will eventually happen, just not till they sort out the N17 mess. I don’t think Dark Uprising will do that, especially at the price point they are setting.

I had to buy a lunch to get three old cassettes and cases (and one case was all cracked).

So the side vent got lots of little additions.

And the other side of the styrene square I cut, adding some Guard bits and a resin base for a more industrial look.

Added a Mark I Rhino hatch as an interior access cover.

If you look at the left of the interior I added the two small reels from the cassette tape as they look like great valve wheels.

A few more bits added above the down pipe.

With the side vent installed.

Ready for painting.

Thanks, I will have to delay a little on the photo of the gaming table, as my City Fight Terrain table ended up being moved to the residences of three other players, some has been lost, some has been damaged, some of the better parts they want to keep for games at their places. Although as soon as we have a Necro game I will take some shots beforehand...and I am making more terrain.

Here is an experiment with some scatter terrain, a mound of rubble on broken tile for weight (as there is nothing as frustrating as light scatter terrain shifting when some models are placed on it.

Remember sprue rubble, well I have used it here...with some real small stones, sand and a few pieces of plastic to add detail.

Top down with some models.

Side view, you can see it is high enough for cover...which in Necromunda is line of sight...although for a regular 40K game it is large enough to place a squad on for cover.

All of these are awesome! I would've never thought to use the cassette, it looks very zone mortals or imperial industrial esq. I recently purchase a handmade city fight "type " board from an Ebay store ( I'll have to check which one) but I say type because it doesn't quite fit the criteria(but works) cant quite fit models between floors and building count per sq. Ft is a little less than recommended but it is cheap well crafted, painted and very cool looking, quite impressive! Capt- Mrs. Lynch mob cant believe half our house is covered in 40k models and an airbrushing station. I'm quite the hobbyist on my days off from firefighting lol. But shes just happy I'm not a drunken marine anymore- thank god for 40k!

Thanks youwashock, LynchMOBFTE and Maharg.

I made another scatter piece.

So beside the Necromunda terrain I am building, this log is also about my old and damaged City Fight terrain. Here is the first building repatriated from my old City Fight table. It was returned first from one of my buddies storage rooms as it fell off a shelf and the tile base shattered.

Now separated into two sections and mounted on a chip board base that lets me use tabs to lock it together. This was one of the cardboard and tape jobs from the tutorial in White Dwarf. I think is needs a much lighter drybrush of white to represent dust.

What do people think?

Good suggestions so I am back to do more drybrushing. In the meantime, some more scatter finished.

A small one for some Gangers to hide behind and shoot from cover.

A larger one, trying out more bits (including a tank tread as one this size could be used for a regular 40K fight and have enough space to encompas a large squad)

One more complete with barbed wire.

While I never purchased the starter box in that edition, either through trades or exchanges with my gaming group I have several, so here are two of them getting some love after years and years of sitting as primed plastic.

My main goal as I glued on the rubble was making certain the Chip Board base stays completely flat.

So no showers of glue to secure them down...epoxy for the larger pieces.

Thank you youwashock,

Now the two pieces with sand added, again small amounts at a time to use a small amount of glue and keep the Chip Bard flat.

Then the paint.

Side by side.

Now do I leave them as is on one layer of Chip Board, or do I add another two layers like some of my larger buildings?

The 7 now finished. 8 More to go.

Seeing them together, I need to use another brown on the bottom of the bases to match.

Now I want to decide what I am going to build with this water filter. I need to get the charcoal out of it as it is pretty heavy. But I think it would make a great part of a small power plant or manufactorium.

Talk about standing the test of time. The Escher Heavies are still some of GW's best. The rest of the line has some classics, but the HPG gal is just top notch.

Fridge filter will make an awesome terrain piece, I am sure.

The corner ruins are looking great. The large pieces between the ruins give a good impression of the floor having caved in and are also flat enough to be playable (the first one). If you are still determining whether to bulk up the bases, I am in favor of it. I find when I use thin bases for terrain that they can get warped over time so I have been trying to use something beefy enough to hold up.

That tables looks great. I love the way the craters on the road helps to blend it in with the terrain around it. I did some battle damage on my roads, but I didn't build it out to overlap the table next to the road like you did, which makes it a lot more realistic and pulls it together. The overall table has a sufficiently blasted and bleak look to be a great setting for a battle.

Wonderful, I love seeing all of these old-school Munda minis getting some love. The two original metal gangs I had almost a complete set of were Escher and Cawdor, so I like your taste!

The 40K cityfight terrain looks great as well, reminds me of the Forgeworld stuff they had out in the early 2000s, and on the Realm of Battle board as well! I painted mine brown (gray rocks, bone skulls), and flocked with green static grass....which in hindsight, may have been a bit overkill. What did you do for the blasted trees? Woodland Scenics?

Thank you Maharg, Viterbi, Theophony, Ezki, squall018, The Riddle of Steel, and Yorkright.

Alright, now back to the water filter build.

Parts, although I ended up using some copper wire vice the phone wiring. I also dropped the zap it straps for paper cut with some of Ms. Captain Brown's special scissors.
Spoiler:

Removed the bottom of the filter.
Spoiler:

Spoiler:

Then drilled holes for the copper 90 degree bend pipes...and to get some charcoal out of the filter as it is quite heavy compared to other terrain pieces.

For the top I added cut paper to simulate some detail and a pair of cog buttons.

Then on the opposite side I drilled two smaller holes so I could secure the filter to the gang box. This was so the terrain would be nice and solid and not just have epoxy holding it together. Also allowed me to get some more charcoal out. The glued a pair of half a plastic clothes peg on each side with two part epoxy.

More to come as the long painting and converting war continues...

Next up was the gang box portion.

I started by sawing through the extensions until I had a nice rectangular box. This took so long that I decided not to complete the job by sanding the top flat. Instead I decided to use some of the plastic detail and incorporate it. So some old Rhino hatches became building hatches.

Then I added old railings to three sides of the top deck.

Now the one short side I was placing railing was too long for one and two short for two, but I had a plan for that.
Spoiler:

Then for an access door I used a Rhino top hatch.

Then flanked it with two plastic close pegs. Which conveniently filed the two gaps in my railing.

I then prepared the other end for the water filter using some old scrap plastic. I just wanted the transition to look a little more realistic than just slapping the filter onto the back of the gang box.
Spoiler:

Added more up on the deck and sanded it to match the curve of the filter.
Spoiler:

Then with some drywall plugs I dry-fitted the filter to the gang box.
Spoiler:

Not before starting to add some bling to the sides of the gang box and some lights for the filter.

More to come.

Alright, next steps.

Added some more old plastic Hunter Killer Missile parts to the indentations of the gang box and some copper wire.
Spoiler:

Spoiler:

Some lamps from the old GW terrain set.

The main wheel actually turns...but I might just glue it solid for strength. Nothing more embarrassing than placing some figures on someone terrain and have your model placement knock something off.

Kitten approved.

Primed
Spoiler:

Now because this is terrain figures will move over and perhaps occupy I am adding a strong black coat after the primer has dried for 24 hours to make certain the paint layers on top do not chip off.

Really nice work on your painting contest entry this month! And, I'm keeping tabs on your terrain builds and picturing the industrial sector that's developing. I'm super keen to watch your LoER entry come together. Once that's done, I imagine you're hitting critical mass... any chance we get an in-game photo or at least a good staged shot? Whenever it works, but sign me up as an interested party if you're keeping tabs. Great work all around!

Thank you Maharg,
Since I had no pink and the pink I normally borrow was not available as Morgen (gaming buddy in my group) was out of town I had to mix it myself. Combination of a little blue, white and red, slowly working to almost pure white.

Let me ask, have you thought about how these pieces will interact with each other? Like how you would platforms and walkways between them? Or do you have enough of that kind of stuff and you're just building LOS blockers?

Thanks squall,
Yes, I have thought about how the terrain will interact with the original Necromunda towers and walkways. I am building enough for two-three boards for simultaneous games. The ground based terrain is for scatter as the original games lacked cover for those poor gangers running around on the ground. It can just as easily end up on 40K table tops for buildings in a City Fight or just regular terrain for other missions.

gobert wrote:Nice hut, I guess there must be quite a few Rhinos missing top hatches on Necromunda. you must have a pretty cool shanty town in your underhive now, will we be treated to a group photo soon?

Thanks gobert,
There will be at some point, likely after the first tower is finished. As for Rhinos, as I made Sister's Rhinos and Immolators and Exorcists I always had left-over top hatches which (while a little big for the small buildings) are great doors.

Latest Escher additions on a blue background.

So the Escher gang in it's finished glory.

Yours look great in black and yellow.

As for Cawdor, I always sigh when I see them done in shades of brown. They can look great that way in photos, but they need at least a flash of bold colour to look good on the table. I prefer your red to the blue that GW seem to favour. Just seems more appropriate for them.

Thanks gobert, shifting back to terrain and I also have the Ratskins finished as well, but I have run out of old metal Necromunda to paint.

To quote King Théoden from the film Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. "So It Begins."

My Plasma Tower.

First I want to give credit to the design and inspiration to Mister Sean Patten and his numerous scratch builds using a variety of household items http://www.ironhands.com/h2.htm

Two VHS video cassetes
One 950 mL (32 oz) Gatorade bottle
One 591 mL (20 oz) Gatorade bottle
One large Miso soup lid
Six plastic disposable shaving razors (Gillette)
Four plastic clothes pins, 8cm (3") long
Six panels with windows...I had five cut-up Necromunda bulkheads and started looking for a sixth one, but I did not want to cannibalize a good one
Four City's of Death Railing panels and one extra end post
One City's of Death Ladder
One City's of Death lamp (half round globe style)
Some Chaos Vehicle accessories (plastic hanging chains and weapon barrel heads)
Three 3/4" Sprinkler Cutoff Risers (black tubes with ridges on them)

For glue I used either polystyrene liquid cement for the plastic to plastic bonds and two part 5 minute epoxy for the plastic to bottle or plastic to clear plastic.

A gathering of parts I believe I will require. There will be more required I am certain.

I began with opening up the two VHS cassettes. Proved to be a bit of a challenge as at least one screw was a custom triangle shape...likely to prevent what I was doing.

Two VHS cassette cases opened up and the reels removed.

Then I cut one of the window sides in half with a saw. I removed the little metal bar in the center and used the holes it's removal left behind as a guide.

Then I used a punch to follow the curved sides, followed by a craft knife to cut out an arch. Here you can see one side cut out over the other untouched side.

Then I repeated the process with the second VHS cassette tape. This created two matching arches.
After that I took one of the halves with the round holes and no plastic clear screens and cut it vertically across the center of the circle. I did this on each side, here is a shot in progress.

I left one half with the round holes completely untouched as this was going to be used to make the deck. Now once I had my two short end pieces and my two long sided arches laid out with the untouched halve you will have this.

One empty circle will have a tape reel top set in it and the other will have the plasma tower sitting in it.

More to come as the long painting and converting war continues...

For those interested, I used liquid polystyrene cement for gluing plastic to plastic (the cassette tape case are slightly harder than GW plastic, but have the same bonding) and two part 5 minute epoxy for plastic to clear plastic (the Gatorade bottles).

OK, next step is to glue to two long arched pieces to the relatively flat outside of the uncut half with the two round holes.

Spoiler:

Then take the Sprinkler Cutoff Risers and cut them at each at the second and forth notch, this will create six struts to fix to your cassette base.

Spoiler:

Sand the ends to make your glue stick and level them

Here they are after sanding and the ends are ready to glue to the base on the side.

Now I dry fitted the disposable razors to the bottom of the large Gatorade bottle to see where I am going to saw off the top. That spot is the first big indentation just below the lightening symbol. I used the indentation to guide the saw.

Once cut, I tested it in the base.

Now the top of that (or rather the former bottom and now the top) looks quite plain, so I am using the sushi lid and carefully cut around the circle to the ring with loads of indentations that matches the width of the Gatorade bottom (now the top). It will eventually be used to add some detail and make a small platform at the top.

Spoiler:

More to come as the long painting and converting war continues...

Loving the razors on the Gatorade bottle... I discovered too late for this round of the LoER contests that Powerade bottles are also very cool looking. Maybe another time...

You can get old VCR cassettes at Value Village for a couple of dollars, cheaper if you purchase a set (of two) as I did.
IGtR= wrote:Loving the step by step, and who knew that I would see a VHS being mauled in such a way after such a long time. How was the plastic: brittle?

Old school gangers are looking fantastic and some inspiration for me to go and put some pain on the original gangers I still have primed sat on a shelf from ages ago

Thanks IGtR=

The cassettes were a little brittle, but I think that was the plastic used rather than age.

So here are the six disposable razors. I pulled off the razor heads first (leaving the clear plastic covers on to prevent wounds) by just slowly snapping them from the side and pulling up and over. I have been removing the brand name from the handles with a craft knife and a file. It is the handles I need first.

Here is the bottom of the second smaller Gatorade bottle, cut an inch and a half from the bottom, you can use the projecting part in the indentation sections as a guide if you use Gatorade bottles.

I used a hole punch to make cut out three small discs on each indentation section. one in the middle and one at each end.

Here you can see the underside of the base, with the six legs made from the Sprinkler Cutoff Risers. They should be the same height as the to end pieces you glued to the side of the base. I recommend once they are glued (and it has dried) you test them on a level surface to make certain your platform does not wobble. Just running over some flat sand paper will work if one or two are too long. Now these legs can be glued to the cassette base with polystyrene cement and it will do the melting bond and be quite strong.

Now to add some detail to the arch ends and the middle of the long arch I added some cut up plastic clothe peg cut up. The ends with the curved sides glue to the two end arches with flat surfaces and the ends with the hole will fit into the middle of the long arches.

Now here are the five window panels from old Necromunda bulkheads that I had (they had the ladder section sawed off for another project and had been in my bits pox for year). Sawing off the other side of the bulkhead, the tops and the bottom (like the bottom tow in this photo) would give me five great windows...I just needed one more and it did not want to sacrifice an untouched bulkhead.

So another trip to the bits box and my stores showed me I needed some more parts not in my original parts photo. Specifically a wall of Martyrs from the old City's of Death set (for my sixth and final window panel), a styrene cylinder (for making rivets), and a 0.10 width styrene plastic card (for filling gaps from the windows the I will show you later).

I sawed off the side of the wall of Martyrs so that it would fit between the razor handles. Creating another part that could be used on the base later. I also carefully sawed off some of the back detail that would be used on the base and tower later...as after all if I did not use it...it would go to waste never to be seen again facing the plasma tower.

Now I glued the ring cut from the sushi lid to the top (formerly bottom) of the large Gatorade bottle (which makes some nice detail) and then glued the bottom of the small Gatorade bottle to top (formerly bottom) of the large Gatorade bottle (the cut out ring perfectly let the bottom of the small bottle fit). For both of these gluing jobs I used two part epoxy as the polystyrene cement would not melt the clear plastic of the bottles.

Now you start to see the Reactor forming from the parts used so far.

More to come as the long painting and converting war continues...

Right, next was one of the reels for a VHS cassette. I removed the clear plastic end by slowly snapping it off...then I removed the tape film. Once that is done it looks like this:

It will fit the base like so. On the side with the little platform like extension where the ladder will go.

Now I am sanding the plastic Gatorade bottles to help the paint stick...in hindsight I should have even done more in the areas that the sandpaper did not reach. I used a very fine grain sandpaper for this part, as I did want the windows to show light through them (just going to add a brown wash later).

Then I began to glue the plastic razor blade handles onto the large Gatorade bottle like so (so that the part that attached to the razor head just reaches the sushi ring). I used two part epoxy to secure them to the bottle so I would do one at a time and make certain it was lined up with the ridge it sat on.

While that was drying I built the wall out of the four low wall panels and glued it to the base. I had to add two layers of 0.10 styrene to the face along the long side as the cassette had a long indentation.

Here you see where the low wall fits and how the plasma tower sits perfectly in the other reel space of the base.

Here is the other side so you can see the height of the low wall, and the three additions of detail from the cut-up close pegs. They glue easily with polystyrene cement.

These close pegs:
Spoiler:

Next I started adding some rivets (just some styrene pipe cut with my Chopper II) and glued to the low arches at each end (short side). What is an Adeptus Mechanicus plasma tower without rivets?

Spoiler:

More rivets would be added to plain flat surfaces, even when it did not look like their was any use for them.

More to come as the long painting and converting war continues...

Most of the recently painted gangers have come via the Swap Shop here on Dakka or through eBay. The Ratskins and a few of the Eschers I had already collected and painted and they were the only figures I had not sold, other than the original gaming box terrain.

Smaller update, just some more detailing.
More chains, hub caps added, and of course more rivets.

In this photo you can see Chaos Vehicle weapon barrels, chains, Imperial Guard Lascanon cabling cut in the middle so the ends face the same way, the cut off side panel from the Wall of Martyrs, and old vent from the original Hunter Killer Missile vent. You can use almost any old bits to create little details on the base.

Added the ladder, now I had to trim a little bit off the bottom of the legs to get it to fit nicely, I wanted as many contact points as possible. Another Imperial Guard heavy weapon bit added to a flat space.

Next part was adding the panels to the bottle between the razors.

Did it with liquid plastic polystyrene cement as the razor handles and the GW parts are both just polystyrene, so a very strong and secure bond. As I went around I made certain that they were level at the top, as the Wall of Martyrs was longer than the other five windows.

Now the windows left gaps at the top and the bottom.

Since I was going to spray paint the model and wanted the clear plastic bottle sides to show through I had to cap the tops and the bottoms. This was done by cutting a curved arch out of the 0.10 polystyrene sheet. First one was a template and the rest were cut to match with the craft knife.

Now when I glued them on, I used some 5 minute epoxy on the curved end that was going to touch the bottle and polystyrene cement on the plastic to plastic of the windows and where it touched the razor handles. The epoxy was on the end and underside of the white plastic as I did not want any overage to show. Did the same thing to the underside of the windows as well. I used the same template piece for the Wall of Martyrs.

Next I added the razor heads, first I carefully removed the clear plastic covers, then smeared 5 minute epoxy over the blades and a polystyrene cement on the bottoms that would site on the white polystyrene. Then I set them in place between two razor handles.

Now when I placed the upside down Gatorade bottle into the platform it looks like a Plasma Tower.

Spoiler:

Spoiler:

Then I added a couple of skulls (one over the Wall of Martyrs and on one the opposite side).

Then some painters tape over the windows and I was ready to paint (now you see why I pre-primed the windows).

More to come as the long painting and converting war continues...

Thank you monkeytroll, insaniak, and gobert

Let the painting begin.

After priming, once the masking was removed you can see the clear windows underneath.

Basecoat was blue and grey mixed heavy dry brush. Then brown was painted on the underside of the base, ladder, railing spikes, cassette reel, chains, Adeptus Mechanicus wheels, and the top of the plasma tower. It and the rest of the model had some rust dabbed on.

Charles Mickens came to investigate, and approved by not knocking it over.

Spoiler:

Some black wash was added in spots for extra grime.
Then an extremely light dry brush of grey and white was dusted over the whole model to tie it together.

The monster head pipe ends, the railing spikes, and Adeptus Mechanicus wheels were given a dry brush of Tinbitz. Chains received some Gun metal and skulls some white dry brush.

The lamp was added to the tower and glued into one of the scratched out label spots on a razor handle. The window panes behind the window frames were given two washes of brown ink directly onto the sanded Gatorade bottle beneath. I did them one panel at a time with the tower on it's side so each one could dry properly and as evenly as possible.

Finally the secret ingredient is added, a flickering tea light is glued into the side of the base that the plasma tower will sit. It is glued in with epoxy and arranged so that the switch and battery can be accessed from below through the tape reel hole.

After that the Plasma Tower was glued down over the light.

Next is the final product.

This piece is magnificent, Cap! You really nailed the color scheme and weathering-- somehow it's even more Necromunda than the old Necromunda card buildings were. Is the rust more complicated than it looks? I think I see two different approaches (iron spikes vs. blotches on flat surfaces), but it's all very effective.

Excellent use of random bits, and I know we all love the VHS chassis, but for me the greatest effect is how well those razor handles both fit the curve of the bottle and bring some great texture without being too ostentatious. They frame those wall panels perfectly... did you have an "omg it fits!" moment?

Anyway, fabulous work. I'll second the call for an in-game whole-table photo someday.

gobert wrote:Great finish to a great project! Love the light up bottle, is it one of the flickering tea lights?

Yes, the tea light flickers, so the glow builds and fades.

Thank you MacPhail,
The difference between rust on the spikes and the flat surfaces was more due to the extra washes that the spikes received as gravity would pull the rust down. As for "omg it fits" moment...when the former top of the Gatorade bottle perfectly fit into the inside of the open cassette case that was pretty cool...I did have to trim off a raised portion of the cassette case when I added the razor handles. I had to do some angled sanding on the back vertical sides of the old partial bulkhead windows to fit between the razor handles...even after removing the side pieces.

So next up is likely some acid pools and then a watch tower.

So I worked on fixing the clay (note to self, get the real DAS and not the cheap dollar store kind next time).

Now I tried to adjust the smaller bits to fit and used more clay to fill in the gaps. Then after it all dried a second time I attached it to the base with epoxy as I did not want to use PVA and have the bases warp.

So I added some bright green where the toxic goop would be leaking.

Next was the first layer of water effects.

Now I started to get excited as the brilliant yellow started to blend into the water effect. Unfortunately it did not last and just slowly dispersed almost completely.

More to come.

So basically, all my brilliant yellow dispersed. Leaving only the bright green layer I added above the dark green base coat.

So as the resin takes three days to fully cure I added some more and it did not disperse...it did a little, but not as much as I would have liked. It was weird coming back a few hours later to see the yellow had been absorbed by the resin.

Now I am a little torn if I want to add another later of my clear resin. The two pieces are solid and level.

Thoughts?

As the resin is solid and level at this stage I'd probably leave it, unless you want to add either more depth or more colours. Shame the first set of yellow dispersed completely, that was looking like a great effect.

I decided to experiment with some additional layers (and add some bubbles), while I was waiting for the pools to dry (and be photographed) I worked on another piece.

This one is a ruined building/gang hideout, using a collapsed building with sprue rubble and some cut-up bulkheads to make a tower.

On the flat surfaces I add some simple graffiti including all the clan names and the names of guys in my gaming circle.

Thank you tzurk,

The rubble is actually just sprue rubble over a Styrofoam base with sand and PVA glue...I just have to make certain I use only a small amount of glue on the base to keep it flat.

Now there were several requests for a shot of all the terrain I have been making on this thread so far. Here is a shot, not a great one as some terrain is meant for 40K and some for Necromunda and some for both.

What I really want to try is to build one of the original terrain piece towers from the first edition game. I have some 0.4mm plastic card that should fit nicely into the plastic bulkheads. Like what dsteingass https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/399826.page or insaniak https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/270/769413.page have done.

Fifty wrote:Are you gong to put a Tectonic Fragdrill in the middle?

Fifty, I would love to, but do not have one.

So anyone with an alternative suggestion for a Fragdrill would be welcomed.

Indents cut out. When you look at them from above they look a little like Marine Drop Pod sides.

Here I added some cut up drink lids to make the raised portion around the main drill hole.

To the undersides I added old sprue for strength and some detail...you will never see all of it, just enough to simulate pipes and conduit hanging from the ceiling.

Then some pipes and detail on the top (hatches and pipes). I decided against doing more thin polystyrene and scoring rivets in it.

The undersides with some paint.

Took a break from my drilling tower while I picked up another old piece of City Fight terrain and refurbished it for Necromunda. Removed parts, repainted it to fit the underhive better.

Now while there is sprue rubble mixed with some small pieces of gravel, I tried to make them set so that a model can stand on the tops and I only have about a half inch where you get wobbly model syndrome. The base is 12 inches by 12 inches and it matches the height of the other tiles so I can expand the board a little more.

Now back to the drilling tower.

The long painting and converting war continues...

I love the use of sprues. Always a good idea.

And I think your consideration of the wobbly models is a good one.

Always good to have terrain useful in a number of places. Good work on tackling wobbly model syndrome with the rubble.

Lovely work on the Necromunda tower... great choices on the add-ons, I think you'll get good return on investment there. Also thanks for the table-mockup a page back... I'd been hoping for one of those.

My word I love this thread. Great attention to detail on the underside of those platforms, and the colourscheme screams industrial sci fi. I did think scrolling through that you were building a drop pod and got a little excited! Glad to see they still went to good use. Keep it up CB 8-)

Nice work on the Necromunda stuff. Good use of the sprue for extra texture on the parts.

Thank you, not certain yet...I will see what the other gamers in my group think and how many players want to meet at once when the quarantine is over.

Progress

Next up is the start of the weathering of the top surfaces and the bulkheads. The parts have not been glued together yet so I can take then apart for painting.

Anyone have an idea to build a fracking drill out of bits in the home? I need something for the center holes.

Great paint job to match the details.

As for the drill. Not sure of the hole opening size, but some grocery store salt and pepper mill grinders might fit in there. If you remove some of the top you can see gears for grinding the salt and pepper. Otherwise drywall anchor with the swirly fins look like a drill tip. Absolute easiest would be use a wood auger bit large enough for the whole. Depending on what sort of hole you want you could also use the type of bit used for cutting door knob holes and make a sheath around it to look like your drilling and laying a shaft at the same time. If you have Netflix I’d say watch the last episode or two of Curse of Oak Island and see the drilling and shaft drilling machines they have on there.

That's looking lovely CB! Straight out of old necromunda with added 3D!

How close to the official drill do you want to be? A big drill could be fashioned from various tubes and a corkscrew, but would just be a big drill. You want some sort of cone, either ridged, or that you could apply a winding strip to. Maybe a superglue lid, like you get on the loctite precision applicators? Or for a slightly different take a nozzle from a paint dropper.bottle. I'm guessing most pen lids would be too small. I seem to recall some candy that comes in mini plastic ice cream cones, if you don't mind buying some candy on your essential trip out.

Thank you Theophony and monkeytroll for the suggestions. I did not find anything and as I was poking around in the kitchen for possible parts, Mrs. Captain Brown caught me. She made if very clear that I was not to borrow anything from the kitchen...so in the end I decided just to make a large pipe.

Thanks MegaDave and youwashock

Not Online!!!,
Feel free, it is not stealing as I want to share what I have made, just as I have benefited from great ideas and posts on this forum and others.

Progress.
Three platforms with weathering added.

For my drill pipe I used some cardboard rolls and some plastic bits.

Dead of night, everyone is asleep in the House of Brown...everyone? No, there are tiny sounds coming from the kitchen. And when she investigates and turns the lights on, the unimaginable presents itself to her. The Captain is rummaging through the kitchen for hobby supplies. This will not stand!

Paintjob on the platforms is fantastic, always love seeing hazard stripes!

Great little story Viterbi...perhaps it was true...

Added some wiring. Which the extra that hangs down the ceiling of the platform above for extra theme of decay.

Mounted it on a base.

One more look before the drill goes in.

Drill is installed.

It makes the three holes have a purpose now.

More to come.

Beautiful work, Cap, even better than I'd imagined as it came together. Can I ask what your blue-gray paint is? Looks somewhere between Adminstratum and Thunderwolf, but I assume you found something in bulk or in a spray.

I used Craft Smart Grey, with a couple of drops of Vallejo Game Color Imperial Glue and one drop of Craft Smart White for the first dry brush, adding another drop of white for each successive lighter dry brush. Craft Smart is the bulk acrylic from Michaels.

Thanks gobert and Fifty, monkeytroll, and youwashock

Thanks DJJazzyJeff,
The barrels are from Little Green Army Men - you can find them on Amazon. They are smaller and less detailed...but significantly cheaper than scale model ones or GW ones. Since they are being used for terrain, they work. They require a load of extra sanding as they are a soft smooth cheap plastic.

gobert wrote:That’s a fantastic board captain. Plenty of love has gone in to that. Will the new towers be based on the old Necromunda terrain

Thanks gobert,
Yes, I plan on at least one more tower based on the original Necromunda terrain, maybe two or three.

Thank you Viterbi and Warboss_Waaazag

I love the fully set board, makes me want to drag out my own stuff and set a board for fun. I missed the original appearance of the toxic pools, but you really nailed the illusion of liquids mixing there. The deck plating is super cool, and the barricades are great. I'm pretty sure Necromunda (or one of its contemporaries) did come with some Tab-A-Slot-B type printed barricades, but yours are massively superior. Between you and DJJazzyJeff, I feel like I need to get moving on corrugated cardboard as building material. Finally, great call on those gum canister access points... can't wait to see that shape up!

Thanks MacPhail,

The Outlanders set came with a tower, an armored bridge and some barricades (all carboard except for the bulkheads)...but that came at the end of my group's initial campaigns.

Now the lids are so light, I needed some weight underneath and the reason I cut Chip Board circles. To add these old metal parts.

The tunnel access points required a light sanding to make certain the paint stayed on.

So the last number of each number sequence would be the number for the underground pipe exit/entrance...if you need a random roll or similar for a scenario.

Lids can be open or closed.
