Hi everyone! Been lurking for some time now and decided this month to dip my toe into the painting challenge. And because I love going through all the other project logs, I decided to start my own. I've been active again since 2014 (after a nearly 10-year-hiatus), but only really started painting miniatures instead of buying painted armies on eBay last year.

With the arrival of Shadowspear this year I took the plunge and build a Space Marines army. And because I love their metallic green armor and their iconography, but not their heretical world views, I built a loyal Alpha Legion successor chapter: The Emperor's Fangs. I'll highlight the painted models in the next days (or weeks), once I have worked some more on my photo setup (which is just a normal lamp and my phone camera at this point, but I know I have a tripod and better light somewhere).

Down below you can see the current status of "painted", "in painting" and "primed". Still on sprue are 5 Infiltrators, 5 Intercessors, 5 Hellblasters and 3 Aggressors, but they are for next year. My aim is to get everything painted that's primed until the end of the year, but we'll see how that goes.

Thanks for all the kind words!

Did a quick color scheme test in the hope that my pre-order of the SoB box goes through. Whereas the armor of the marines is Leadbelcher plus 2-3 coats of Coelia Greenshade (I was nearly 20 models in, when Contrast hit), I‘m using Terradon Torquoise for my sisters armor. It looks very similar, but has the added bonus that I can correct mistakes, which is not very easy with the marines.

Seeing how it may be good enough weather this weekend to be priming, I started on a new squad:

Not sure yet, if I use the combat knifes as count as chainswords or if there's room on their belts to attach some chainswords from the MK III marines set. When they are ready, they will be accompanying Captain Malleo Tyd, who despite appearances not only has a thunder hammer, but also a jump pack and a storm shield. And one of these days I will find a solution to model them on him, but all bitz I tried out while building him didn't work out, so he'll have to stay put this way.

Some progress, I painted the last three Incursors, so that's every built Vanguard unit painted, need to make some group shots sometime next week.

In other news, I built the Assault Marines. Backpacks and heads are bluetacked and I beliveve I need to work on the pistol arm of the one reiver dude. And maybe add some grenades and pouches from the Deathwatch set.

Got the mail that my Adepta Sororitas Box should be on it's way to arrive hopefully tomorrow or Saturday. With this in mind, I took Celestine out of the box and boy oh boy, I really messed up her face while painting her a year ago. I tried to do a glowing eye effect with the gemstone paint from GW. I still don't know why this seemed like a good idea. I than painted over with a flesh tone, took the photo and called it a day. But now, she's getting a make-over into my new color scheme.
And my Jump Captain finally got a jump pack (looted from Blood Angels apparently) and some eyes.

That color looks rather amazing on Celestine. Jump pack worked out good, too. After he gets his shield he is going to be a very imposing model.

Thanks youwashock.

But I had to go back and clean Celestine up, I painted the model a year ago, but had her built directly after Gathering Storm hit and I did not clean up anything. On her leg was some plastic, which I thought was a misshapen purity seal, but it was leftover from the sprue So she needs a new coat of leadbelcher on a few parts and than the green contrast, before I can proceed. But seeing as my SoB Set came yesterday, I'll probably work on them, to maybe get them primed, if the weather allows for that.

And trying something out for the captain, I think round shield is the way to go, just need to find something more suitable in my bitz box than this placeholder

Good idea, though. Switching up from the more common rectangular or cross shaped shields looks cool.

Thanks youwashock. I'm also on the edge, because with the shield you can't see the hand and it really lends to the pose. But seeing as I didn't find a fitting shield, he'll remain the way he is for the moment.

Started on the Sisters, already not loving to have the heads and backpacks separate to get everywhere on the models Flamer sister also has her arms bluetacked on, hope they fit, when I glue them into place after painting.

I vote for Captain America’s shield! If you paint it you could swap in the gold, green and red but keep the image.

Glad to see the plastic sisters made it safely to Germany! Good luck getting them all together once painted!

I found painting heads on little bits of metal like that can work really well. Maybe it won't be too bad.

I'd love to just use the shield, especially as he would be a mixture of Cap and Thor Good thing, shield and handle are not a good scale, so I'm not tempted to snatch it from Lego Cap, who surely would be sad to see it go.
But a friend is looking through his bitz box this weekend to see, if he finds something appropriate. A Tau shield generator would probably work well. Biggest problem for me would be making straps to go over his outstretched hand. My green stuff skills are sometimes not good enough to fill gaps

Fifty wrote:I found painting heads on little bits of metal like that can work really well. Maybe it won't be too bad.

I did it with flight stands and bluetac with some of the heads of my marines, it really helps to paint them better. But the method to attach the heads was not ideal and I saw on some other plog here the method with the bits of metal and it's a really good idea.

In other news, small progress atm, built two repentias and may start painting the heads and backpacks of the battle sisters, if I find the time this evening.

I really like the Terrain turquoise armour on the Sisters, out of interest is it straight out of the bottle or mixed with some medium? Whichever way I plan on using a similar scheme on a CSM army I have planned.

Also that big bit of AOS terrain that Tyd and painted Sister are stood on, have you got a recipe for that as I have one laying around that needs painting. Keep it up!

Thanks ListenToMeWarriors!

The sisters armor is painted straight out of the bottle. Although there is a little pooling (nothing that really bothers me), but I have contrast medium on the way and may try to thin it down a bit.

The AoS terrain was quite simple: Sprayed with mechanicus standard grey, washed with agrax earthshade and a heavy drybrush with karak stone.

Thanks Yorkright!

Started with the heads, but looks like I won't get to prime the rest of the model in the near future weatherwise. Got the eyes down, but skin color was a little to thin and hair and skin contrast colors bled into another (especially with the repentia head), trying to clean it up this evening (and the eyes of flamer girl, they look weird atm).

Sadly sticking the heads on the metal did not work out the best, probably because the contact point is to small.

A little tidying and you'll be good. Painting stuff in pieces can get a little fiddly. I think you nailed the face on the bottom left with the eye-patch.

I find that often blue tacking heads is best. That, or sticking the base of a head in the gap in a slotta base so there is more contact. If on the edge you still get lots of access. A metal rod will be too weak I think. I use the slotta base even with metal heads and it works fine

Thanks, may give that a try, I believe I have some bases with slots somewhere in a box.

And the weather gods smiled on me yesterday so I was able to get the sisters primed, but made it a very short session so had to do some touchups with the brush, but now they are ready for painting and I'm quite excited. Points-wise it should be enough for Kill Team, seeing that I can take Pious Vorne and Thaddeus the Purifier with them, thanks to their updated data sheets in the Kill Team annual.

You can try gluing the heads onto sprue frame sticks, with plastic glue. I guess the real pros don't do it, but I think it works rather well. Once you're done painting, you just use a nipper to snip off the head.

Viterbi,

As already mentioned by Pomander Cask...simple popsicle sticks work well...just get yourself some "blue-tac" or similar poster sticking gum and mount the heads/small item on something that will not sway in your hands.

Good luck.

I hope so, atm I'm fretting with the parts that are painted gold with the standard paint job. Probably gonna go with the original blue and edge highlights with the lighter blue, may test it this evening.

Thanks, the next wave of heads I'll try some of your suggestions!

And because work on the bird stalled a little I follow ListenToMeWarriors inspiration and also post pics of what I painted this year so far (apart from the Corvus and some sisters there's not gonna be much being painted the rest of the year).
When I started out this year I aimed for painting as much miniatures as I did in 2018, which was 78 infantry, 2 vehicles/walkers and the kill team terrain. In march or april I realized, that I progressed much faster than I suspected and set my aim for 150 infantry models this year. I'm now standing at 141 but am not sure, if I will reach the 150. It's possible, but I'm not putting much pressure on it because I'm quite satisfied with the output, especially comparing my space marines to my custodes from last year. They will be getting the biostrip treatment
Additionally I did two walkers and a vehicle, but not much terrain. And seeing what I painted for AoS this year (4 SCE) I'm gonna tackle more models next year, I still have some Kharadron Overlords to finish and want to start a Ogor army, which happily will result in not too many models to paint. And now without further ado the pics:

Thanks guys! It really helps seeing grey or primed models disappearing (although some just went to ebay ). Most of the space marines sat primed on my desk for months and it felt so good seeing the silver pile get smaller and the green one on another table bigger.

And did a little work on the corvus, decided to definitely omit other colors and keep black and blue as the main colors with silver for guns and decorations.

The color scheme works really well and is a pretty original look. Is it just me or are the vehicles a different color?

I really like Mr. Capt. America there. I agree the round shield looks great. I see he is still without shield in the army shot. If you don't have one, there are a lot of good ones from third party bits sites. Maybe go for a round Spartan shield.

Thanks guys! Made a little start with the sisters, but the battle ones have priority before the repentias
Did a quick check with battlescribe and according to their data I have 2.214 points of painted space marines (although it's 790 points of hq options ).

Thanks, that's really nice to hear ! I started painting slowly in 2017 and according to my trello board (yep, I have a trello board for painting and building progress ) I painted about 40 minis and I'm happy to have been able to increase this in the following years and getting better at it. Although if you see closeups of my minis, they are not as cleanly painted as they appear from normal viewing distance Still room to improve although I'm not sure, that I have the patience.

You're right, the vehicles are painted differently because their surfaces wouldn't lend themselves so well to my method for the green metallic. They are painted in the color of the shoulderpads.

Yeah, the captain remains shieldless for the moment, but a friend promised to go through his bitz box, looking for a round one. Of course, that was some time ago, but I have faith in him, that he'll eventually will make good on his promise

And a little progress on the flyer, I still hate myself for that color scheme, but as you said youwashock, it will be worth it in the end. Because I like the outcome. I did a little cleanup on the back of the wing and I'm afraid I won't get the lines better than that. The front and underside are now also done, but still have their cleanup to look forward to, once I painted up the other side. Infantry models are so much easier to paint!

Last but not least a pic from my sisters, started on their tabbards.

Still contemplating, if I'll do the ogor skin with contrast, classic colors or a mix of both. Never painted that much skin on a model before.

And yesterday evening saw a little sisters progress. I'll paint those three up first and then the next two with celestine in tow before tackling the repentia.

When I painted my Corvus I found the lightest of light dry brushes of the lighter colour on the raised areas really took a lot of the legwork out of it. I then neatened it up with pure black. Once weathering was added it was not *that* much of a chore. Deathwatch infantry, on the other hand, I find a real headache to paint at any decent rate.

Big models can be pain to paint at times. Don’t set it aside for to long I need to see it finished. :-D. I will throw my 2 cents in for the Ogre skin, the skin contrast colors are good but in my opinion a base white will look better than the gray. Depending on how you want it to let look going back with thin coats of flesh is what I did.

Viterbi,

Good luck with the edge highlighting on the Corvus. I did something similar on my Eldar Wave Serpents, it takes forever and in the end I used washes to tone it down and blend the colours together better.

Thanks, I'm a little impatient myself to put the heads on the minis so they look a little more finished. But with so much yet to paint I'm afraid my brush will wander and destroy their faces.

That sounds like a good method, thanks! I may try that, although I have to admit, that it may be to lazy to try after having the edges outlined on half the model
Deathwatch infantry I found quite relaxing. I used three methods for my minis. The primaris got a dawnstone (?) drybrush and some bronze details on their armour. Vets the same but I tried (with varying success) some grey edge highlighting. And my kitbashed primaris vets got primed with leadbelcher and then one coat of black templar contrast.

No worries, the plan is to have it finished end of January/middle of February That should be doable if I paint a little every other week.

Thanks for the skin tip! The base color for the ogres is wraithbone, it's a little lighter than the picture shows. I'll test it on one model but have white scar on hand, if I need to brighten the base up a little.

Good luck with the edge highlighting on the Corvus. I did something similar on my Eldar Wave Serpents, it takes forever and in the end I used washes to tone it down and blend the colours together better.

Cheers,

Thanks! May try your method too, nuln oil could work between the black and the blue.

The flyer and sisters are looking good. I feel your pain with the edge highlighting, I never enjoyed large models, they just feel like too much of a slog. I’m sure the end result will be worth the nausea!

Thanks gobert! The two dreadnoughts and one tank I painted this year were quite fun, but I used other methods that yielded faster results.

Started work on Baldilocks, she's a nice model to paint, should have blocked all colors in tomorrow and than she gets Nuln Oil all around before I'm tackling the highlights.

And more progress. Forgot to tidy up the cloak with the base color after shading Tried stipling the cloak, not entirely satisfied, but good excercise. Need the gold details now and I'm still at a loss what to do with the cables. At the moment I think the same color as her trousers could work. Any other suggestions?

And she's done. Had surprisingly large amounts of time today to do a little bit every hour or so. Additionally my wife said that green would be a good color for the cables and of course she was right Now I only need to do the glamour shots for the paint comp tomorrow.

Also made a little DIY magnetic storage solution. Ikea box, magnetic foil and magnets under the base. Works good and is pretty cheap.

Thank you guys for the nice words, really happy you like the scheme! And welcome edwardmyst to this plog

I'm quite happy with the color scheme, but am still looking for the best method in which order to apply colors and washes. But contrast makes painting the green armor so much easier than doing the washes on my marines.

@Yorkright: I think time- and moneywise I also won't be able to do a complete sisters army in 2020, but I am planning on doing an angelic host, led by celestine und with 2-3 units each of the seraphim/zephyrim kit. That should be a nice ally to the little deathwatch force I have and the abhumans led by the primaris psyker.

And I found a nice pocket of time today, after my wife and I had built the kid's playmobil sets from santa and they set off to their room and were not seen again for the next two hours So I may be able to pull it off, not least thanks to your encouragement @youwashock! The second row with Pious Vorne, Crusader and the special edition sister was already done and the front row is nearing completion. Might be able to finish the simulacrum tomorrow morning, biggest headache is the repentia, haven't settled on colors yet. May try the blue-grey for her cloth that's on the regular sisters on their corset. And because I haven't built any arcos, I may sub a negavolt cultist from BSF instead.

Looking good so far, and almost there!

On repentia colors, mirroring the corset for the cloth would probably work, possibly with your purple on the streamers and ribbons, then you could do the sides of the chain blade in the green you're using for the armor. Good luck!

They’re a good looking bunch of sisters alright. Whilst the classic sister look is helmetless, I do love their helmets! Do the new sisters come with enough helmets for all of them?

Hoping for a closer look at your Pious Vorne as I’m needing inspiration for my own BSF set, might have a look see if I can use the paints I already have to mimic your sisters?

Thanks for the feedback and input! I used your idea a little bit and did some of the things that should be metal in purple. The parchment will be normal color like the purity seals on the normal sisters. I will incorporate green on the blade, possibly for the fleur de lis and the handle.

Thanks, I'm already excited to build the rest of the army box and hope the full line will release in January and not only some of the kits.

Thanks, although I need to point out, that my painting is far from flawless. When I take pictures of my minis I always see at least on or two things, where I could have painted more careful

And the two battle sisters are now fully done and the repentia is awaiting cleanup, paint for spots I missed (like on her forehead) and whitening the parchment for a round of skeleton horde.
And just checked the points, don't need to sub the negavolt cultist as an arco, I come out at 93 points for these models and probably use the sister superior as if she has a combi-plasma, so that it's 97 points for the team.

Thanks guys!

Barrels and me are a history filled with misunderstandings I actually have models with drilled barrels but were way to lazy this year to do them at all. I may try doing Yorkright's dot idea.

And the team is finished, but of course five minutes later my friend writes, that his child is sick and he can't make it. Another friend wanted to watch the game, if time allows and I asked him, if he will bring his orks, if he can make it. So maybe they have to wait some time, before seeing action. Can you please elaborate more on your magnetic foil box solution for miniature storage? I am not having good success with the GW storage boxes (delicate conversions keep breaking in the foam) and I was looking for a magnetic solution. I’m curious to learn what you did.

Thanks ListenToMeWarriors! I would have loved it more, if I'd known two years ago, what scheme I will use I have lots of small units that were earmarked for an inquisition army. I'm now contemplating stripping some minis to unify the scheme, but will first unify the bases to see, if that will be enough. I have used The Fang and Screamer Pink on most minis to have some common ground.

Thanks The Riddle of Steel! I'm quite happy with the hair too, because at first I wanted to give them differing hair colors, but I like that unified look. Only Celestine will have hair in other color, but she's a living saint after all.

The storage solution is quite simple: I had some of the Ikea Samla boxes lying around and found self-adhesive blackboard-/magnetic-foil in a Tchibo store (it's a mixture of cafe and household stuff that changes every other week). I just cut it up, put it in the boxes and part 1 was done. I then bought 5x3 magnets and used superglue to glue them under the bases. And that is it really. The Dreadnought fall off, if you turn the box (don't ask, how I know that ), but all other infantry stays put. I haven't field-tested the solution yet, but it's nice, not to cut foam for stuff like inceptors.

Always tempted by that storage solution. Only thing I'd worry about is that dreadnought trying to dreadsock your models if he comes loose. Maybe another magnet or three on him?

Hoping the bases help pull the army together, having to undo paint progress stinks.

Thanks, although it was a close-run thing at times. But his dice were really cold and I did more 5+ invuls with the simulacrum, as should have been allowed. What can I say, the emperor really protects

I did some tests and the two magnets I put under the dreadnoughts seem to stop them from moving sideways, but it would be no problem to put more under their base.

Yeah, stripping painted minis feels somehow wrong. I will definitely do it for the 10 tempestus scions, because they were some of my first miniatures painted, so they could use a refresh. The rest of the little Astra Militarum force should be fine.

Thanks squall018!

And the last mini in 2019 and number 150, so I hit my goal. Celestine is repainted, but I'm not entirely happy with her. Mostly it stems from her being shoddily built by me when Gathering Storm hit. Then I primed her not very good and because I didn't want to strip her paint, I painted over the old and it shows in places. Rushing the job didn't help either I'll stay on the lookout to get a new on sprue version cheap to built und paint her in subassemblies. But she'll do for now.

Second pic is Graven's fault His mystery machine pics made me look up this "Gaslands" and now I'll dig into the rules over the next days.

Thanks youwashock! Getting closer to Celestine you can see where there's to much paint or something not built properly. But overall it's such a nice model, it is nigh impossible to ruin it Already have started to assemble a fleet of cars at a discount store. I only had three childhood cars available and my kids would probably object if I snatched their Hot Wheels I 'll post some pics in the near future, as soon as I've searched through my bitz box and have started work on the cars.

Thanks Captain Brown!

And I posted this list in the "your 2020 gaming plans" thread, but have slightly altered it and these a my building and painting goals for 2020:

Warhammer 40k/Kill Team

Goals:
Paint the last primed Space Marines (16 infantry models, 2 tanks and 1 dreadnought)
Build and paint the 5 intercessors, 5 incursors, 5 infiltrators, 5 hellblasters and 3 aggressors still on sprue
Start a sisters army, army box is already in progress and I will first add (probably) 2 seraphim and 2 zephyrim squads to that to build an angelic host led by celestine and her gemini
Paint the Rogue Trader Kill Team and terrain from the box
Finish the last 4 Blackstone Fortress Heroes
Build and paint the Combat Arena heroes
Paint Ghor Half-Horn
Build and paint Greyfax

Stretch Goals:
Build and paint an Adeptus Mechanicus Kill Team roster consisting of 10 Skitarii and 10 Sicarians
Paint my Kastelan Robots and their master
Strip my Adeptus Custodes and repaint them (or sell them)
Paint the rest of my deathwatch (app. 20 models)

Age of Sigmar/WarCry

Goals:
Build and paint at least 1.500 points of ogor mawtribes
Build and paint an Ossiarch Bonereapers WarCry Warband
Build and paint the WarCry terrain
Paint the already primed or WIP Kharadron Overlords models (3x Skyriggers, Lord Big Hat and the ironclad)

Stretch Goals:
Paint some of the already primed stormcast

Other stuff

Goals:
Paint Hellboy, Abe Sapien and Liz from the Hellboy Board Game
Convert 10 cars for Gaslands and build a little terrain or whatever will be needed for the track

Stretch Goals:
Paint the other heroes from the Hellboy Board Game

And I thought about gaming goals. Seeing as I play with three friends (of whom only one has real 40k/AoS armies), the goal is to introduce WarCry, so the other two can join with minimal effort/models and play with the one friend at least a few games 40k/AoS. Last year we managed only two games of 40k.
I want to introduce Gaslands and attempt to have everything game-ready, so none of my friends has to do anything initially.
For February I've already started planning a game night, where we want to play the Hellboy Board Game.
Last but not least I finally want to play Blackstone Fortress. I'm already nagging my wife for a few weeks, it can't be long now until she falters

And because everything is better with pics and I loved how gobert sorted his upcoming projects, I put everything out and in heaps I want to tackle first. Gonna be a nice feeling, when the table and desk are getting clear over time.

Table from left to right:
Kharadron Overlords
Primaris Infantry
Sisters of Battle Army Box
Starstrider Kill Team
Ogor Gluttons
Hellboy Heroes
BSF Heroes
Combat Arena Heroes (red sprue)
Corvus Cabal Warband
WarCry Terrain

For Gaslands you may want to take a look for this. It comes with 2 of the sprue pictured and makes arming Hotwheels/Matchbox cars waaay easier. Plus each sprue makes a motorcyclist that’s actually close in scale!

And a little progress, getting the new year into a higher gear. Trying to get that WarCry terrain out of the way. Built everything according to the assembly instructions and now I have to decide how to build the rest of the wall sections. Want to get it done til the middle of the week, because temperatures might allow for priming.
Also on the table are the two minis for the painting comp, 3 WIP sisters and the Icebrow Hunter I bought used and painted. He is in the progress of being finalised with an add-on paintjob. I would have loved to strip the model, but afaik you can't do that to finecast.
The little photobomb on the right side is a custodes test model. I stripped the first of the ones I painted in spring of 2018 and am now doing a new color scheme that looks promising.

Starting on the first Gaslands cars. Upgrade frames should arrive in the next days and these two cars got stuff from the bitz box. I tried "painting" the black car with dirt, because I liked the color it had, but let's just say, that the experiment failed. It looked weird and came of at a touch, which is not ideally for a game Luckily one bath later he was again in mint condition and both will now be normally painted once I primed them.

Viterbi,

Yes, you need to seal the sand pigments down. I do it with a then watered down varnish and then seal with Dule Coat when I am happy with the result.

When you are in a state where there is too much pigment, a brush with a little water can remove the excess.

Less is always better.

Hope that helps,

Oh man, that armor scheme is bold and super effective! The outcome speaks of the decisions that went into the process. Definitely worth every step, and I love the contrast of both the gold trim and the not-so-futuristic leather straps. Thanks for the tips Captain Brown! I'm a total noob when it comes to pigments, I have only used them once before on my rhino. And I'm pretty sure I did it wrong because I put some pigment on my palette, got some water on them and slapped them on the rhino. I like the effect, but I'm not sure, it was right I think I'll get back to zero on the pigments and try it on some unimportant miniatures first.

Thanks MacPhail! I hope you'll be able to tackle your army box in the near future, excited to see your scheme on the new models! I'm slowly getting into the hobby groove again, atm trying to get a color scheme for my mawtribes down. Quicky did a test on one of the gluttons, needs some detail work on the belt. Mostly contrast and some technical paints. Quite happy with it in terms of speed, but should have left the arms of, there were some parts, that I couldn't reach. On other models I will test another color in the middle of the belly plate, it looks a bit to boring this way. And I hate taking pictures, because while assembling, after priming and while painting I didn't realize the mould lines on his arms.

In view of the learnings of that one glutton the new tyrant will get very special treatment. I glued only his feet to the body and the horns on his bellyplate, everything else will be glued after painting.

Ogres with yellow pants .

The pigment you used for the Gaslands car, was that one of the texture paints from GW?

Good luck on the weathering powders, I’ve only been brave enough to try them once. I don’t know for sure but Hotwheels actually seem to have a really smooth, glossy finish which may be the cause of your troubles.

Blood splatter looks good on the ogre, hopefully the tyrant can get some of the same without catching the evil revelations of the camera!

Thanks ChaoticMind, the tyrant should fare better, because he has so many parts, that I seem to have eradicated the few mould lines that were there.

Yeah, I'll brush up on theory about using pigments before attempting it again And you may be right that the cars normal finish didn't help my attempt. Well, some cars are almost ready for priming now, only the weather stops it atm and need to glue some weapons on. Thanks again for the tip with the upgrade frame. I bought it and combined with my bitz box I should have enough to arm a lot of cars.

Thanks youwashock! And I had to google Karnov. 2-3 years before I started with video games The other five guys are a little more lucky, they'll get the mould line removed and then a bit of Wraithbone slapped on those newly filed parts.

And these cars that will get painted first, need to glue some weapons from the upgrade frame, but am still getting to grips with the rules and couldn't really decide what weapons to use.

Thanks! It really is nice, because the cars are only 1-2€. It's really tempting to buy lots of them But I should have enough for now, to build some teams to test the team with some friends.

Was able to prime the cars on tuesday and had 15 minutes to spare yesterday so started with the first car. He's getting the color scheme I started on my corvus blackstar.

And you're both right, Tron was the inspiration for that scheme I did it the first time last February, when I experimented on the spindle drones and did one in that scheme.

And as I'm seemingly a hobby butterfly this month I built the Arcos, because I'll play Kill Team this weekend and against orks I surely need a bit more punch.

Yeah, I have some primed cars and for where I'll keep them in original condition and just need to add weapons. A friend of mine gifted me a 36x36 gaming mat and some painted mdf containers so we should be play-ready some time february.

Small progress, I only seem to be painting atm when I need the models for play, as is the case with these two ogors for mordheim. Sadly Wyldwood didn't turn out so good as a skin tone on such a big model. I may try some edge highlights to mitigate that. Was thinking about Dommbull brown or something in that direction but would appreciate other suggestions!

And finally did some more work on one of my entries for the paintcomp, he is slowly getting there, nearly everything has it's base color, but with all those details there is a lot of cleanup where I painted on already painted stuff.

I think the Wyldwood may look better after you get some of the other areas painted. If not, a few highlights to pick out the contour will work.

You were right youwashock, it looked a little better after finishing him (and not putting him under direct light) May try some highlights at some point, but not to soon. Used the ogres in Mordheim yesterday and it does not work well, so they quickly disbanded and will get touched up when I paint the rest for WarCry.

And I have a new mini on the table and am pretty excited for that one. A friend of mine doesn't like painting and bought a painted ork army on ebay for use in Kill Team, but the boss was lacking color. After badgering him for a few month he agreed, that I'm allowed to paint his ork. Started blocking the green yesterday to get a feeling for the mini.

I have found that when tackling flatter, larger plain areas with Contrast that the Contrast medium is your friend. Maybe give the next time you tackle Ogor skin with it a go with a 50/50 mix?

The Arco Flaggelants look great, doubly so for a speed paint job. Best of luck with the Orks, the minis from ASOBR are so characterful.

Thanks Captain Brown! With one mini not painted from his orks it was a no-brainer to offer it, even if it took some month until he gave in

gobert wrote:The ogres look good even if they don’t play so well. That Mordheim table is amazing, is it yours or a store?

Thanks gobert! Luckily, I started to paint them in anticipation for their WarCry rules, so not really sad, they don't work well in Mordheim. But have a new warband lined up, just waiting for the minis to arrive.
The table belongs to the friend I'm painting the orc for. He built it 2 years ago and it is marvelous to play on it.

Painted a little yesterday, blocked more in on the orc and tried my hand at checks. I painted the black with contrast to have a more sloppy look, because I don't figure orcs as exact creatures. And the beastman for the painting comp got the first hazard stripes and looking at them, I have to redo them I used pencil as a marker, but that was not precise enough.

Thanks youwashock, but I caved and painted his sword metal again At one point in the future he may get new stripes, but seeing as I want to finish the orc for the weekend and some nighthaunt a scount-as for an undead Mordheim warband I opted for done instead of a new attempt. And happy that you like the armor color. It's good I have settled on some prime colors for my Imperials, it makes painting that much easier and ties everything together.

But because I didn't do the hazard stripes on the sword, I made sure that my friend's orc got some. The mini is at 80% now, next up is edge highlights, rust and blood on the axe and a little cleanup. And because I imagine he is running towards the foe gun blazing on auto fire I tried the heat effect on his gun.

Edit: On second thought I may try the method I used for the orc hazard stripes on the sword, that may be a quick way.

Thanks guys, your comments mean a lot!

And I'm calling the orc done, he gets back to his owner tomorrow evening, we're playing Mordheim at his home. Probably some time until I can shoot the orc from the table with my sisters or marines

The only thing that made me cringe was doing the base like on the other model I had as a reference and that he bought painted. I tried to match that tone and style as close as possible, because I took liberties with the other colors.

And I'm painting up four models for the Mordheim game tomorrow, not sure, if I will make it because it's my turn this evening getting the kids into bed and then my sisters visit for dinner. Keldrek will be the vampire lord, the other ghost a dreg, sorcerer will be used as necromancer and the banshee as a ghoul.

Thanks Yorkright, he was pretty pleased with the mini and we'll play a round of kill team next weekend, so I can shoot or hack that model off the table

Ghosts did reasonably well. Played two games and won against Beastmen Raiders, but my Necromancer now has to sit out a game, if I roll a 1. Second game was harsh, failed to wound the ork friend's Reiklanders and their longswords did really hurt. Nearly lost my vampire lord (Keldrek), first rolled multiple injuries, but had only to roll once on the injury chart again. But of course first dice is a one, luckily second one is a six, so I have to roll again and he "lives". That was a close one, but all said all matches seemed very rounded, we were three players and everyone played two matches, winning one and losing one.

Thanks, your pics of your nighthaunt were a really good inspiration! I would love to say, that the effect on the horns was planned, but I actually had done them in blood too, but it looked weird. Put black contrast over it and suddenly it worked

And a shot from the first game, one round later, the quasi vampire lord could just leave the boat, leaving a dead bestigor and dead warhound behind.

Interesting question about the Kroot. I actually started building those guys to have them run around with a more lax inquisitor and maybe he would sell them as abhuman warriors if someone asks And at least ruleswise I'm quite happy they are with the Imperium, so I can put them in withput problems. Have an abhuman detachment planned with some Bullgryns, the ratling snipers, Rein & Raus from Blackstone Fortress and they will be minded by the Primaris psyker and a preacher with chainsword (which I didn't plan to buy, I wanted the missionary with chainsword. But in german they are the Prediger and the Priester with chainsword so I only glanced at the description, no image was included and ordered the wrong mini But it's still a nice one, so he gets painted up and is also an Elite slot unlike the Missionary who is HQ.

Thanks ListenToMeWarriors and loving the Primal joke What kills it for me most of the time is the shipping to Germany, because I often want just one mini or one transfer sheet and not spend 99 GBP to have free shipping.

Other angles may be even less favorably for the Kroot I quite like them, but they were option B, because I wasn't able to get enough beastmen heads from my usual bitz dealer.

And did some work yesterday and a lot of the colors are blocked in. Could kick myself, that I assembled them completely, when I build them last spring, because there are lots of places, that are hard to reach. And after that I would love to kick GW, because even if you can reach stuff, they are very busy models regarding straps and suchlike. But they should be ready for play on the weekend, blocking, cleanup and shading should be done by tomorrow and than only some edge highlighting to go.

CaptainWaffle wrote:I agree with gobert. If you're not painting for competition try not to sweat the small stuff. Odds are, if it's difficult to get to you won't see it anyway and can get away with black or basic paint on it. Have your own standards, though. This is your hobby after all.

Great work on the beasties.

Thanks Captain Waffle! And yeah, probably only see the stuff if I hold the mini upside down in a certain angle, so you're right.

I'm not really versed in lore, but I can get behind that, would be nice if they do some more minis like that.

And I had a painting session yesterday evening and finished them. Although a combination of tiredness, impatience and a brush that wasn't able to keep a point to save his life were a dangerous combination and resulted in some very sloppy "edge" highlights. It didn't help, that I didn't paint the rim of the armor in a metallic color. But all told I'm not disappointed and they are ready for battle this weekend. And some of their brethren already joined them, had to unify the base rim and add snow to the Bullgryns and Rein & Raus.

Oh, wow, these Beastmen make me so happy! You've done a really nice job with the color selection and the unit composition. One of my favorite illustrations of all time was of an Imperial Guard regiment standing at ease and posing for the "camera" with all of the unit types represented. I think there some Beastmen in it, definitely Ogryns and Ratlings, a jet bike and a tank and a pile of classic uniformed Guardsmen. It's what me want to play Guard. Your mixed group totally reminds me of that. There was also one of Ogryns and Beastmen on patrol, guns at the ready... classic B&W art. Let me know if you want to me scrounge up some 2nd Ed. art and lore... my buddy has a basement full of old game books.

Loving the abhumans, keep up the great work!

Thanks so much guys, really happy you like them! As I said, I'm not well up on the lore, but I just love the look of abhumans or even xenos allies, even if the imperium would not approve. Would love to see some more ratlings, I have the sniper squad painted, but they have never seen play, but are earmarked for the next imperial soup game, whenever that will be.

And here are some shots of the kill team commanders game on saturday, my AM vs. my friend's orcs. My mission was to get the beastman leader over the other edge. He had 20 orcs that wanted to stop that and because of the deployment zones for this mission it was carnage from the get go.
I won in the end, but it was a close thing in round three. His snazzgun did wound my tempestor prime twice, but I had one beastman scion take the hit with the look out sir tactic (he was the best beastman, killing a burna boy with his hot-shot-lasgun turn 1) so my boss only lost 2 of his 4 wounds. But of course the stupid flash git rolled a 6 and shot again at my leader. He wounded, I couldn't save but luckily, he just got a flash wound. And in the following close combat phase my two Bullgryns killed 6 orcs and my friend failed the break test and that was it.
Gotta say, with 82 points combined the Bullgryns weren't cheap, but T5 counts for a lot and those mauls with S7 and D2 are amazing in kill team.

Thanks, it was, although my friend was a little miffed, once I started clobbering all those orcs

Looking on the calendar it's high time that I start on my painting comp entry, neophyte is gonna be the reference model for clothes and armor and I want to try to replicate and hopefully improve the stipling method I used on the ratling cloak.

And next weekend is probably another bout of Mordheim, so I'm gonna paint both blue ghosts as zombies (still undecided on color), grey one as another dreg and the gryphhounds gonna be direwolves.

It really does, though you are ahead with the ogres. Interested to hear, how they fare in WarCry. I'm building 4 warbands atm, so my friends can test the game without having to build up a force beforehand. Apart from ogres I have already painted models of Kharadron Overlords (albeit a paintjob from when I startetd painting, so I may do a few touchups), Ossiarch Bonereapers (still all on sprue) and SCE Sacrosanct (all build and primed, some painted).

Yeah, I really love the GSC models and actually bought the codex last year with plans to do a 40k army. But after calculating, what I would need to buy, build and paint I stopped that endeavour and have now about 25 models that will get painted for Kill Team and that will be that.

Thanks, looking back over the models from last year, purple is unmistakenly my go to color when devising a new scheme And no worries, order really doesn't hold long on the desk

Syro_ wrote:Wow! Super organized.

Thanks and what I said to gobert, it won't last

We played Mordheim Friday evening and our modified ruleset seems to work out. We capped the starting budget at 250 GC and max warband size is 2/3 of the normally allowed. Makes for fast games, we managed three that evening. Problem was, that the dwarf player wasn't there last time, so we other two were two games ahead and had the stronger forces. But only one of his models died (the costly one with the crossbow ), but next time he should be more on par.

Had to finish two zombies and one dreg for the game and really love, how a different paintjob on a chainrasp can help with differentiating the models. Painted them to match my necromancer to show they belong together. In reality they did nothing in both my games, because not being able to sprint the ambled over the battlefield never reaching anyone

The gaming pics are first my fight against the dwarves, that didn't end well for those little treasure hunters. Second pic is Middenheimer vs. the dwarves and a big win for humanity and the last shot is kind of exemplary of the last games, that tend to end in a bar brawl in the Stoic Arms. Positioned my vampire (Keldrek) badly and killed to of my friend's model but was lucky in return, that I only lost the dark elf assassin and then my friend failed his rout test, could have ended bad for me.

I can't say it often enough, it is an amazing table my friend put together. And well, the necromancer may look the part, but he was taken out of action in 3 of 4 games, so he has to try a little harder next time

I started out with mercs and have a averlander warband currently on hold, but ready to spring into action, they leveled up nicely, nearly every hero has 2 or 3 wounds. And good luck, if you're going to the tournament!

youwashock wrote:Big love for the game shots. Sounds like the Undead are tearing it up.

The table is made for taking pics, it's always great fun, I'm posting an old shot under this post, that got a little editing, vampire lord vs my swordsman. It was our first campaign some time ago and the swordsman fell the vampire.
And can't complain atm with my Undead, although overall it's still pretty balanced between our warbands and hopefully stays that way.

It's not yet March, but I'm trying to use the coming month to tackle a lot of WarCry stuff. Bought the starter last year on release, but have still to play the first game. But everything I read about it sounds good, so I bought a lot of stuff the last weeks and will try to built and paint the stuff pictured later.
Luckily, I have already some stuff ready to play, namely Kharadron Overlords, where I have every option painted.
Arcanites from Silver Tower are painted too (friend of mine bought them this way off ebay and gifted them to me a while ago). They are lacking Tzaangor Enlightened/Skyfires, but they are already on the way.
Mawtribes are in the process of painting, they are already primed and I got some Ironguts of ebay last week.
Corvus Cabal are also primed and will see a lot of contrast color testing.
Nighthaunt arrived today and will get a simple scheme, haven't decided yet, if I go with fleshy/bloody or monochrome.
Terrain is built, partly painted and two buildings still need to be primed.
Last but not least there's monsters & mercenaries waiting to be primed and painted.

And I got some kelermorph shots with better lighting.

Seeing as we'll be playing it in our little group (three friends and me) I think the rules will suffice. Had a second read through them last night and they seem simple enough to make for a quick game. And because we're playing Mordheim, we're used to do some houseruling, if it works better
We'll probably start with some test games, before I hope we go into campaign mode.

Have you played any other warband than ogors? And can you recommend which models to use? Have gluttons, ironguts, leadbelchers and grots readily available, if not all painted.

Thanks youwashock, although as most of the time, the idea was born out of laziness and the question how to paint that model in 5 minutes

MacPhail wrote:That Kellermorph is fabulous! Nice work on the cloak, and a great selection of colors overall.

Thanks MacPhail! I did a neophyte test model last year and was really happy with the scheme. Truth be told after finishing the gunslinger I wanted to immediately paint other genestealer cult models for kill team, but I have to stay strong to get WarCry on the track.

Speaking of which, I finished all the wooden details. Hate painting terrain, so keeping it simple, Wyldwood as a base, drybrush with Tau Light Ochre and now to pick out stone work and skulls and finish of with Blodd for the Blood God.

And played to rounds of Mordheim yesterday. Had a Dark Elf Assassin whose initiative is 8 (he leveled up), so he can jump of high buildings with super hero landing. First time he failed, because the chargee causes fear and I botched morale. After that he wreaked a little havoc in the following round.

The Mordheim games are always fun, because the aftermatch can skew things in funny ways. You can win the scenario and lose two of your best heroes forever or get totally cheesed and every hero levels up and you come out on top. I believe we stopped play for 5 minutes to take assassin photos from every angle

Thanks ListenToMeWarriors, knowing your excellent GSC that means a lot!

gobert wrote:That last chainrasp looks pretty scary with his Spikey necklace, no wonder his head fell off! . The new scenery is progressing nicely too!

Thanks gobert and if that necklace wasn't inspired by the sculptor watching a Saw marathon, I'd be surprised

Made a little progress with the scenery and aiming to finish the small wooden stuff this evening, just needs contrast for brick and bone, based everything white again after splashing the contrast for the wood on. And built the ogroid and the crusher (the silver tower ogroid was already built) and primed them yesterday. They are motivation to finish every meh stuff, I'm not motivated to do, so I can have fun with these. Have already an idea how to paint the two ogroids.

They are the terrain from the WarCry Starter Box. I never attempted scratchbuilt terrain and probably never will

Thank you guys!

Wasn't completely idle, but did not finish all the wooden terrain because on piece has a lot of metal parts on it and I'll paint them together with other scenery that has metal too. On the bright side, I nearly finished Uncharted 4 and those lovely skeletons that I'll use in WarCry. Last but not least I got a vampire for Mordheim, but he lost his hand and broke his sword, so he'll get a new weapon. Can't decide, sword probably looks most natural, but a mace may be better in-game.

Terrain is looking great.

For the vamp, gamewise, a parry is always nice to have, and a club is good for knocking heads in, so I say sword and/or mace.

Thanks youwashock! I'm leaning towards mace (represented by the pick), because my Nighthaunt stand-in vampire has a sword and in all honesty, I don't need a second hand to count the times, I was able to parry attacks

Yorkright wrote: Ok that kellermorph looks ace you have really done the model justice! Please stop painting up those Warcry models and terrain I can’t afford another game . They look great too.

Thanks Yorkright, he was fun to paint and I hope that in late spring he has some more painted GSC buddies to use him in Kill Team. And I feel you with not being able to afford another game, that's how I feel every time I look at what Graven has been painting

Captain Brown wrote:Almost there with the terrain Viterbi.

Thanks Captain Brown, terrain is my least favorite stuff to paint and I envy people like you how not only paint theirs beautifully, but are also able to built something from scratch!

But I'm getting closer and closer, need to age the bell a little with patina and a little metal drybrush. I have one big terrain piece not pictured that also just needs metal on the gate/cell thingies and then comes the only favorite part: Getting blood on everything

And I have put the first color on a cabal mini, will try to paint the whole warband only with contrast, let's see how that turns out.

Finally got some new stuff, but trying not to get the backlog to high. But seeing Optimus Prime in youwashocks blog, I had to get one. Fortunately I found a ebay seller, that charged only the normal price and a reasonable shipping rate to Germany.

I'd say the terrain is looking excellent. It looks just as good as what I see in the stores so if you are getting that effect from a quick technique, then that seems like a win.

ListenToMeWarriors wrote:The terrain is really coming along nicely, I agree that can seem like a bit of a chore to paint. Am interested to see how you Corvus Cabal Contrast Experiment works out as they are very detailed miniatures.

Thanks ListenToMeWarriors, luckily contrast paint makes it a little faster. And yeah, those cabal have some small details, may paint them with normal paint after blocking everything else in with contrast. But first need to do some touchups with Wraithbone, didn't get everything with the rattlecan, as I found out under the harsh light of my magnifying glass.

The Riddle of Steel wrote:I'd say the terrain is looking excellent. It looks just as good as what I see in the stores so if you are getting that effect from a quick technique, then that seems like a win.

Thanks The Riddle of Steel, it really is mostly contrast. The wood got a drybrush with some lighter brown, but the rest is just slabbered on Metal takes most of the time, because I have to paint clean.

And had a friend over yesterday and although I don't like playing with unpainted stuff, we tried out WarCry, because I'm really eager to play it. Was a fun game, like the randomly generated missions, both warband felt thematic (the cabal fast with quick attacks, the bonereapers slow but tough). Stilt guy really did good damage on the stalker, but next round my friend used a quadruple and that skeleton got 4 extra attacks and pulverized the birdman :(

Not sure about that rabbit hole, but since I was building a Maggotkin army I figure having the crossover into Warcry would be good. You may be right, if you are building and painting AoS models, that can be used in WarCry, it is of course a small step to starting the game. If you try starting 5 warbands and buy all the monsters, it's not such a good idea

Thanks gobert, and curse you for bringing up Superb Starlings. Now my leader will be called Clarice, no way around that Luckily times are more strange than difficult atm, having the kids home all the time will probably bother them more than us in the next few weeks, but it's nice seeing how they play with each other without trying to bash their heads in Hope your family is well too!

And slowly painting along, put the skin on the five normal birds, but missed some spots where their arms still had some red on after reapplying the base color. Ah well, they are fading tattoos, never shy for an excuse
Did the bases on the middle management birds (they definitely need some blood, once all models are finished) and applied some contrast to scatter terrain so that this will finally get done. Not sure about the skeleton in the fountain, it feels out of scale despite being a GW model.

Yorkright wrote: I’ve always liked the Cypher model, you’ve done a great job with the model. Looking forward to his glamour shot.

Thanks Yorkright! The old metal model was the only model I painted myself when I had my first bout with wargaming in the early 2000s. It's now resting stripped in a box and will be painted to at some point.

Glamour shots came out really bright, not exactly as I wanted. Played around with the lightbox I got years ago, but it's not ideal. One USB-Cable broke directly and I may have to look for another setup.

And because I finished Cypher, I thought why not paint the Cypher Lords Got the box for 25% off and after closer inspection they seem to be easy enough to paint. I won't be lacking in WarCry warbands after the next month.

Thanks Heretic Tom!

Got two little sessions in last evening and today after breakfast and calling the five little birds done. If one is halfway cautious it really is possible to get acceptable results with just contrast and nothing else. But I won't do it again, always going back with white over the spots you accidentally painted in is cumbersome. But now they are nearly done, already prepped both leader birds and put some more colors on them. Should have them finished on Tuesday I think.

And seeing the picture I realize, that I painted some bird skull parts leather on the one model, need to rectify that.

The Corvus miniatures have turned out great, I do agree that retouching mistakes with white/wraithbone/grey seer is not the most easy way of getting results. It must be really annoying for those new to the hobby or those without patience or a steady hand.

ListenToMeWarriors wrote:The Corvus miniatures have turned out great, I do agree that retouching mistakes with white/wraithbone/grey seer is not the most easy way of getting results. It must be really annoying for those new to the hobby or those without patience or a steady hand.

Cypher looks great, I think it is one of the best modern reimaginings that GW have done.

Thanks ListenToMeWarriors! Yeah, someone who just started painting will be annoyed with all the retouching. I was as clean as possible, but did some parts 3-4 times and still didn't see some stuff (even on the last two minis, where I wanted to be more thorough )
Cypher sculpt really is great and I hope he sees battle in the not so far future.

Thanks Captain Brown! I could have done more details looking at the official pics, but so happy he's done.

Inspired by ListenToMeWarriors I also have kind of a March review. My ambitions were set a little to high, I was meandering with the terrain at the beginning of the month, then painted nothing for a week before getting to grips and churning out the rest of the terrain, the cabal (very hasty I might say, they need the 3 foot rule ) and Cypher. But at least I got some stuff built and all in all I'm happy to have finished most of the terrain (two large pieces remain) and a whole warband.

So, without further (but a little) ado my finished cabal (they get blood on their weapons after their first WarCry kills), the finished terrain (still needs blood) and the primed models awaiting paint, Bonereapers are gonna be next, because their scheme will also be quite easy, gonna do Aethermatic Blue over Grey Seer for the bone. Still need to decide what to do for the armor, contemplating gold or purple.

These look ace! Love the bright colours. As for the ghosties, I think a dark silver metal would look better. Gold/Bronze will get conflated with the turquoise and distract (the brain may just see it as verdigris)

Loving the aethermatic blue bone idea. That is another frustrating thing about Contrast, the way how you think you have done a full and even coating but the weird way it behaves means that there is usually at least one spot that does not get coverage. You have a miniscule example of that here with a smidgen missed on a couple of toes on the right foot. Normally gravity would do its job and a standard wash would have covered that, I have had such instances happen to me a lot with Contrast.

March in review was cool. That terrain is a bit daunting to me so I have left it, and the Cabal and Cypher and it has been a productive month for you.

Thanks ListenToMeWarriors and yeah, I don't know how much I reapplied red on the cabal guys, because there were still white spots left. But all in all I really like contrast, the advantages luckily outweigh my grievances.

Thanks Syro_! Loved doing the cabal warband, because I finally used (some) other colors than mostly grey-blue, dark green and purple (although they are still on display on some models).

youwashock wrote:The ghostly bone guy looks cool so far. Look forward to seeing the rest of the scheme.

Thanks youwashock! And the scheme is moving along, just blocked in the other colors and now waiting for the texture paint to dry, so I can shade armour and base. (Edit: Now realizing that I painted more of the mini as armour as there is actual amour... ah well, probably not gonna correct that, because I like the current look more. Gonna decide after finishing this one model).

Thinking about doing a contrast paint over the sword, but yet undecided, which one. Tending towards black. And I'm totally at a loss, what to do with the eyes, any suggestions would be welcome!

And built the Cypher Lords (such nice sculpts) and the Underworlds KO warband, gonna use floaty and minigun guy for WarCry, they are nice alternative sculpts, love the reloading, really well done.

Did some quick additional painting. Seraphim Sepia as a shade was maybe not the best ideal, it now looks slightly golden May do a light silver drybrush. Otherwise I think the scheme will work. Did orange for the eyes, like on the cloth. Need to do something about the teeth, I think they would work better, if they aren't blue like the rest of the bones. And why the hell did GW did so much detail on the back of the shields Gonna paint all of them on sprue, so I can get the wood, the arm and the leather strap without problems.

Yup, the skelly looks great. Light blue and orange go together very well, just like the classic Gulf livery! And I think the gold/brass color you achieved with washes (and drybrushing?) looks perfect for the scheme, much better than the original steel.

I'm also liking you Corvus Cabal scheme, very different to the studio scheme! I'm partial to the white cloth, but the teal works as well. Heh, from some of your first WIP photos I initially thought I was looking at some Eldar Banshees

Thanks mcmattila! Metals are Leadbelcher, wash of Seraphim Sepia and than a drybrush with Stormhost Silver. Quite happy with the look myself.

The Corvus scheme was really unplanned and consisted of using more or less most of the contrast colors I had at hand Glad you like it!

Thanks gobert! And yeah, looking back at old minis where you glued the fist on a flat back of the shield, it's a far cry from those days. Although the old stuff made painting easier

Finished the four spear skeletons, that leaves 5 to have finished the mortek guard. And started on the Ogroid Thaumaturge. I really, really wanted to do him with normal paints and nice layering, but contrast was to alluring and two coats later I think I will be going for speed with painting him

Thanks youwashock! I couldn't do an army of them (I believe you need like 60 of those guard as baseline), but those few models are perfectly manageable.

And finished the ogroid, had lots of painting time slots throughout the day.

He's called Azraq and he's fallen out of grace with Tzeentch after being on the losing side of a battle against SCE to secure a Stormvault. That's why his complexion is far from shiny and his horns are bleeding out of the skull, because his glamour is wearing off. To top it all, the eye on his front is just lifeless silver und not the mystic green it once was to show him glimpses of the future. Now he is forced to stalk the Eightpoints and hire himself out as a mercenary to try and gain Tzeentch' favor again.

Thanks squall018! Contrast makes some painting definitely faster, but the correcting if you don't stay exactly on target can get tiresome. But with 9 models, it still was pretty fast.

Thanks Theo!It was a spur of the moment thing with the Ogroid, saw the primed mini, the pot with the blue-grey contrast and thought... "eh, how bad can it be"

Started work on the other Ogroid and this time didn't shy away and did - for the first time - real layering. Normally I do base, wash and some small highlights and call it a day. This fella got base, wash, reapply base and than another color. Thought about doing some fine highlights in orange, but fear to ruin the skin with it, so orange is reserved for most of his hair and I may give his face some. Not sure about his beard, I think it should have the same color as his top hair.

That did come out pretty nice. On worry about ruining with another layer, man, I feel you, thats like 80% of my models, but I'd say go for it, hypocritcal as it is. Just really thin it down and sop off a lot before you apply, just a nice light glaze of orange. Keep it to narrow areas and have a dry brush ready for cleanup, and hey, if it doesn't work, another layer of red wash or a bit of 2nd color reapplication will hide it well enough. When I can convince myself to try it in similar situations, it usually ends up looking decent.

Maharg wrote:The red skin looks great, definitely worth forcing yourself to add the extra highlight, it has added a lot, particularly on the face

Thanks Maharg! Yeah, that ominous extra mile really can help.

And now, the second Ogroid is also finished. And because it seems that I had too much time on my hands this morning, I wrote some fluff for Red. And after that you get some glamour shots of him and of Azarak.

Kamir Mah was an Ogroid full of contradiction. Stories were told about him at campfires at night. About his trusted spear, that could slay gargants, but was rusted and crusted with blood. And about his shield which was in stark contrast to the spear: Gleaming and blinding his foes with the sun’s reflection. The reason, it puzzled no one for long was his reputation as a creature that could set a warband on the right track for Archaon’s recognition. He took only a small fee, but fought like a berzerker. It delighted the warbands - and probably would’ve not, if they knew the reason behind this.
Once upon a time, Kamir Mah was an Ogroid on the fast track. Even as a youth he was one of the deadliest creatures roaming the Eightpoints. Only armed with his spear he slew monsters, chaos worshippers, order soldiers and more without discremination. This brought him to the attention of Khorne who bestowed gifts of strength onto Kamir Mah. But while ascending the corporate skull ladder he realized that he actually had to deal with politics, if he ever was to ascend into demonhood. Bewildered he tried his hand at this new game and actually managed to gain traction. The now fading ritual scars on his body are witness to this. But it soon became clear that butting heads was more of Kamir Mah’s game and one night he found himself ambushed in his sleep by rival Ogroid Armik and his pals - 50 Bloodletters. After a vicious fight only Kamir Mah was left standing. On that day he cast his back on Khorne and went home to the Eightpoints, leaving his spear encrusted in the blood of those he had slain that night, but polishing the shield every night as an reminder of the treacherous act he narrowly survived, reliving it while cleaning the shield.
But he’s a happy Ogroid now. Back to stalking the Eightpoints, fighting for himself and sometimes pushing a warband closer to the gods they’re praying to… knowing what will await them, if they succeed. And while thinking of this, his features against all probability turn into a huge and honest smile.

The duo look great together. I really like that you have gone for two different schemes, and have made each version work. I can get very bored of models that look the same, especially where a (magical) creature is involved. I think AoS is a really good opportunity to do something like this, as there are no blocks of 1000 goblins, and you have done a great job

I like your take on this very much. Whilst AoS can be a bit swarmy I think you're approaching it in absolutely the right way. Interesting, characterful models.
