Post by: Geifer

After a slow start I've come to like Legion quite a bit and found I'm quite motivated to paint Legion models. Although I'm a slow painter and easily distracted, this is the time to give my growing collection a permanent home that I fully expect to be be infrequently updated with my latest work.

I didn't have a project log before because I opted for mostly utilitarian paintjobs for my Legion models but then Sabine Wren came along, I got inspired and actually put a good amount of work into her. And I have to say I'm quite pleased with how she turned out:

I reckon the paintjobs for regular troopers will still be all about getting armies painted rather than getting the best quality out of them, but even so I like to think that my attitude has changed between the Fleet Troopers I painted last year and the Clone troopers I painted a couple of weeks ago, resulting in the latter looking a tad better.

I find Legion's models quite charming even though I'm not a big fan of heroic scale, and I did some arm and head swaps on the Fleet Troopers so that the three squads look different. I put in the same effort for the other two squads of Phase 1 Clone Troopers, but haven't painted them yet because I want to focus on the Rebels first to get a proper army to play with. I've so far only played small games in which the Fleet Troopers were led by Leia (using Brother Vinni's miniature rather than the stock one) and supported by one AT-RT.

A second AT-RT is well on its way, converted like the first one to be piloted by a Fleet Trooper. I'm not really a fan of the Rebels and kind of got volunteered to play them, but I always liked the Fleet Trooper look and wanted that as the theme of my army, so everything that's added to the army and isn't a named character like Sabine will get converted accordingly.. I have a generic officer with a Fleet Trooper helmet in the pipeline along with a speeder that will be converted to fit with the army theme. I'll probably also convert two leftover troopers into a sniper team. Ideally that will wrap up the Rebels and I can get my modest Republic forces painted. Though where it's really at for me is the Empire. I've hoarded quite a few Empire kits but haven't had the time to do anything with them. Hopefully that will change in the new year.

Until then, this is the start of my Legion showcase. Hope you enjoy Rebel scum.

Some excellent looking rebels there Geifer, very well done! I'm loving the camo scheme for the Clone Troopers the most though - a brilliant execution (And far more adventurous than mine!). I've also got to compliment you on the superb blending of the colours in Wren's hair. Keep up the good work

I painted my second AT-RT:

This time with larger racing stripes to give the top of the machine more presence.

That's the Rebel walkers sorted out.

The Rebel Commander is painted:

I added a Fleet Trooper helmet to tie him in with his army, but kept the orange shirt from the box cover because it's cool, sets him apart and obviously orange goes well with blue.

Medical Droid Unit Attachment

With this model I finally got around to giving Contrast paint on a silver basecoat a try (in my case ocher for a gold finish). Got some more tinkering to do but it's a pretty nice way of achieving a worn metallic look that I intend to use more of in the future.

Next up is the Astromech from that box.

Inspired by the faulty one from Episode 4, I refrained from adding blue stripes to keep it in line with the red ones I used on the AT-RTs.

Thank you. I'm really happy they showed this camo pattern* in the Clone Wars show. I wasn't looking forward to having two armies with white armored troops and I certainly want to keep my Stormtroopers, whenever I'll actually get to them, classic. Bonus here is that the Empire has more variety in its troops and between Shoretroopers and Deathtroopers I won't have to paint an entire army white. Plus, I really like this pattern for how it looks, and not just for practical reasons.

*Or something close. No guarantees it's a perfect adaptation.

Aye, those are some really nice looking Clones. Are you going to do the BARC in the same colours?

My Varied Star Wars Legion Collection @ 2020/04/16 12:56:30

Post by: Geifer

Thanks. Yes, the crew will have the same camo pattern. The speeder itself is planned to be some shade of beige. Possibly with red or yellow markings and/or racing stripes. I've considered camouflage for it, too, but I think that would overload the model and rob the army of a bit of contrast. It's not all set in stone yet and I'll see how I feel about it when I paint it, but for now that's the plan.

I had hoped to have a Saber tank in hand before painting it, so as to get a feel for how I want to tie together the different vehicles in the army, but that's not going to happen with the virus situation and the BARC is already well on the way, so I expect it to be long finished before I can even buy the tank.

The last of the specialist unit attachments for the Rebels:

I expect that with only the land speeder left to do before I run out of Rebels, most of my time will be spent painting more Republic troops in the near future.

Duros Jedi:

Built using Operative Luke, leftover parts from the BARC gunner and some green stuff, I made my own Jedi to lead my Republic army.

This is quite likely the best white armor I've ever painted. Not that being better than my previous efforts is hard, mind you. It's also a test of how it looks with satin varnish on it. I don't think it's visible in the picture, but I want to figure out if I like the effect. That'll be another step towards painted Stormtroopers, if successful. Those are still on the horizon, though. For now I need to finish the Rebel land speeder and I want to get the Republic army off the ground properly. As a reminder, I said this earlier:

Well, through my masterful use of the power of procrastination I am now the proud owner of a Saber after all. The BARC never made it past the basecoat stage, although the crew is making progress. So I still get to see how I feel about the tank and if that influences how I paint my Republic vehicles.

Here's my X-34 Landspeeder conversion, done at long last:

I had a good laugh seeing the speeder for the first time, but thought FFG was a little conservative with just two passengers next to the driver. So I set out to fix that and at the same time tie it in with the Fleet Trooper theme of my army. It's been a good bit of work and I think I've reached the point now where I never want to paint another Fleet Trooper again, but it was worth it and my Rebel army has its centerpiece now. Also, why we all know an army is never truly finished, I have all the models that I originally wanted for the army. There will no doubt be extras like some Mandalorians or perhaps a sniper team made from the leftover Fleet Troopers, but yeah, the army is in a good place.

I expect my focus to now shift on the Republic.

And now for the monochrome part of this thread! Imperial Officer:

I converted her a little to have her look closer to the box/card art with a repositioned arm, facial surgery and a haircut. No idea why the sculptor deviated so much from that art, but I think it is much to the detriment of the model. But, well, nothing a knife and a little green stuff can't fix.

Hopefully the first of many more Imperials to come, I put a little more work into the paintjob than the Rebels got (characters excluded, obviously). I think I have a fairly good idea now how to paint white and black armor (and really, white and black anything - no shortage of that in the Empire...). I don't think I could have said the same two years ago when I started painting Star Wars models. So I figure this is a good time to get started on that Imperial army I always wanted. That said, it won't be as quick as the Rebels since I intend to paint every model to a higher standard.

Death Troopers, blacker than the blackest black!

OK, technically that's a lie. I've done my level best to give the black bits (which is to say like 98% of each model) an interesting appearance by giving them translucency and basing them on various shades of orange and grey so as to not have a simple, plain black. I think that would have been too overwhelming.

But yeah, Death Trooper design is very black and I'm happy the models turned out the way they did, considering how little I can work with different colors on them. Novel experience for me.

Commander DT-A19:

Spoiler:

Operative SAS-04:

Spoiler:

So, you know how Star Wars has plenty of wars in space, heists in space, politics in space? I felt like adding to the category of exploitation in space.

Human commander and Pantoran operative for now. They will in time be joined by another four operatives set up to make the squad function as a Death Trooper unit in case I want to use them in games.

It's a nice opportunity to practice skin tones. I'm really happy with the way the commander turned out and after having some doubts about Senator Chuchi, this Pantoran turned out really well. I'm not big on blue and have struggled with blue skin in the past, so it's probably best to note down how I painted it:

1. Thorough drybrush of Jokaero Orange over Dryad Bark as a base

2. For pre-shading:
Drybrush of Lugganath Orange
Selective drybrush of Blue Horror
Highlights with Pallid Wich Flesh

3. Shading with watered down Dechala Lilac

4.Layering:
One coat of watered down Hoeth Blue for the darker areas
Two to three coats of Blue Horror for the lighter areas

I sculpted the "gems" fairly small and tried to give them a look of amber. This may be the first time where I find the camera close-up to paint the model in a better light than a smaller picture at the model's actual size, or the actual model. I don't pretend to understand amber. I did some research but I found it's not as simple as painting actual gems. Not sure what to think of that, or how to improve on it.

The zoomed picture does not shine a good light on my blending here. There are some harsh lines on the skin that I can barely make out on the model even now that I know they're there. Not my best sculpt to be sure. My hands shake far too much to make straight lines, especially in hard to reach places where parts of the model or base get in the way of the sculpting tool. But it's not too bad for what it is and the face actually came out pretty well.

Two more operatives to go.

Thank you.

I wasn't really sure what to do with Star Wars vehicles for the longest time. Zenithal (if you will) drybrushing works best for me, I think. It's nice and grainy and adds something interesting to look at. Star Wars designs are cool but based so much on geometric shapes and large panels.

I've actually been experimenting with this throughout. The BARC is different from the X-34, and that's different from the AT-ST. I think I like the latter best because it has an extra layer of Contrast for depth before it gets more layers of highlights. That may well become my standard for Legion vehicles. Maybe with some refinement for good measure.

Wrecked AT-ST terrain piece:

I don't regret buying the model, but unlike the actual AT-ST this one is made of PVC instead of hard plastic. I guess it made more economic sense for FFG to do it this way, but the unfortunate side effect is that there is some warping to deal with. It looks good enough when painted, but there are some notable gaps between the AT-ST and the base, the front and top armor required a lot of coercing to fit and, as you can see, the base is slightly bent. Ultimately nothing too terrible, but this is why I prefer hard plastic.

Still, I'm happy with how it turned out and it's a pretty cool model.

Agent Kallus:

I had Kallus prepped and ready for painting for a while but wasn't quite sure how to go about painting the three different greys on his uniform and between everything else I was doing I never really found the time to figure it out. That's changed this week and I finally painted him.

Observant observers may have observed that I went with a non-canonical beard. I wasn't really paying attention when I put the base layers on and put a mustache on him. Now I'm not saying I have a problem with a beard that looks like he shaved after putting his helmet on, but I think he looks more badass the way I did the beard, so I kept it. Also it's just facial hair. He can shave it one month and grow it back the next month if he feels like it, so it's not even a problem.

Darth Vader:

I'll take this opportunity to say that I'm not feeling Vader's pose, which is one reason why it took forever to get around to painting him. I like operative Vader better than starter box Vader, but I'd much prefer a model of him just standing there like when he makes his appearance during the battle of Scarif before he murderizes all those troopers. With or without ignited lightsaber. Though after painting this model I'd say with is better, just to get a spot of color on him.

Oh well, maybe one day we'll get a Vader model like that. Got to work with what we have until then, I guess.

It's May the 4th. Let's have an Imperial Stormtrooper:

That's Sergeant Steve, the measure of all things. Or perhaps I should spell that Stiev to make it look like a Star Wars name. At any rate, that's the first Legion model I assembled, the model we used to determine door and wall heights and such when we built our Tatooine terrain, and now he serves as the prototype for how I intend to paint my Stormtroopers. I figured he deserved to be highlighted on his own.

I'm pretty happy with how the white turned out. Painting to that standard is a lengthy process and I don't expect to finish the first Stormtrooper squad anytime soon. Batch painting, which I only grudgingly do to begin with, is right out. I can't focus on more than one of these guys and ensure quality at the same time.

I've held back on painting Stormtroopers so far, but now that I have a number of Imperial units in my display cabinet it's time to add the core of the Empire's armies. Slowly, to be sure, but the first step is made.

Governor Pryce:

I had a spare officer model laying around and decided to convert it to Governor Pryce. In hindsight reposing the model entailed so much resculpting that it wouldn't have been much more work to just sculpt the whole model. But here we are either way.

The rank plaque for a governor is nasty at this scale. I can just about sculpt twelve pips with decent gaps between them. Painting them to look discrete is a lot harder and I'm glad it worked out. I certainly don't want to do that again, though.

Imperial Stormtrooper Specialists:

It's good to get these guys done not just because I need Stormtroopers for my Empire army and for the longest time I simply wasn't able to paint a pleasing white, but it also gave me the opportunity to visualize what I want out of my collection.

I have no intention of going overboard on Stormtroopers since the Empire has so many fun trooper types to choose from, so I think having all my Stormtroopers as part of the same company and organized in a single platoon is a good idea. I have all the orange pauldrons I need already. This captain gives me a company commander. The squad leader a couple of posts up is platoon leader now. Any remaining squad leaders get a white pauldron. That should sort out the command structure and any Stormtroopers I add will be organized around that. Maybe if AMG releases Stormtroopers in HIPS I'm going to need another platoon, but who knows if that ever happens.

Imperial Snowtrooper:

I gave basing on my Snowtroopers a good bit of thought and considered snow bases for a better fitting theme, but the squad seems to be very limited in how you can convert it. The other PVC models I've worked with so far are at least good for making three squads of troopers with some individuality on each model and not too much conversion required to get it, but I'm not sure I'd be able to do the same with Snowtroopers. And if I'm going to have only one squad and an E-Web down the line, there's no point in giving them different basing as I couldn't make a full army out of them.

On the bright side, I don't care for the look of armies that don't share basing, so at least I won't feel bad about mixing these guys in with the rest of my Imperials.

Jyn Erso:

I had Jyn basecoated on my desk for a while and was finally in the mood to paint her. Director Krennic:

I considered painting the inside of his cape red to give him a little more color as he isn't just the usual Imperial black and white but also has that huge white surface of the cape that just doubles down on the look. I eventually decided against it as the cape has sufficient depth to make it look interesting regardless. Still, I should probably paint Lando for a bit of variety. No one wears a cape better than him.

Shoretrooper Captain:

I wanted to add a Shoretrooper captain to my collection because of the for the Empire pretty colorful appearance of the uniform. I don't really have a use for him in game, so I figured I'd make a mini-diorama of the captain and his wife going to, being at or coming from a beach party. The model is still good to use as a game piece, but it's a lot more fun on display now.

The squad leader had his arm repositioned instead, and the heavy weapon trooper got a green stuff pauldron as a late addition. It's about as much as can be done with the available poses, I reckon. I don't think I want another squad, although I may add a few more heavy weapon troopers to swap out.

Luckily the Empire has no shortage of different troopers, so there's plenty left to do. I may vary it up a bit with some Rebels again, though.

Boba Fett (bounty hunter version):

I finally got around to painting Boba after letting him sit basecoated for a year and a half. It's a fun model and I never realized how much his costume had going on until I tried to match it with the paintjob. That's some neat visual design the costume's designer came up with. It's not dissimilar from Sabine's very personalized armor. There's a lot of fun to be had with that kind of stuff.

I also opted against the flying rod. I don't really like those things and Boba's pose works just fine for the moment he's taking off. His foot is large enough for a pin and doesn't even need to be hidden by the static grass I put there. I just did that because it was always the plan. But the sand completely hid the wire even without the static grass.
