Decided to throw up all my WIP just to keep a log of it all, I've always enjoyed looking back on my progress.

First time using Contrast paints, buddy of mine gave me some so I figured cultists were an appropriate test bed. The cultist on the left is regular paint/wash/drybrush, Contrast is on the right.

Wife loves Baby Yoda so a friend printed her one until the talking plush is delivered later in the year. The robe is all contrast, and used a little more on the face for definition.

I loved the Abaddon model, but I'm not a huge fan of special characters. So I chopped up a $60 model to turn him into a regular sorcerer. Pretty pleased with how it all turned out. I'm still mad about the back of Abaddon's head being molded to the body!

The sorcerer's attack dog. Gave him Abaddon's lightning claw as I wanted to use as many pieces of that kit as possible.

Those cultists look great as does Abaddon the Sorceror. Interested to see your take on modern Chaos after your 2nd Edition Iron Warriors awesomeness!

yeah abusing the new abbadon for Chaos lords / Sorcerers is the greatest thing imo you could do for your chaos warband.

Nice job with the kitbashing! it is frustrating just how often they seem to make it hard to change up things like heads, but you accomplished it well

Both cultists look good. An army done using either technique would look great. Nice work with Abaddon, too.

I'm a fan of Abby conversions, less of a fan that he's the only option for properly embiggened terminator heroes
Sorcerer 'Badoom looks the business tho - good to know about his head, I'll have to cross that bridge when I do my own terminator lord mod.

Baby Yoda looks grand as well, surprised that the contrast played so well with the print lines!

Yeah I just wish it wasn't so expensive to do so! Are there a lot of Abaddon conversions floating around?

Hah, now I need to go back and convert a metal Abaddon for my Iron Warriors!

Yeah his head is dumb. I took a miniature coping saw and cut it out. At least I can still use one of his heads somewhere else...

Baby Yoda was a surprise with the contrast. Glad it worked out because it took longer to dry than to paint!

Got the cultists all colored up. Just have to finish all the metal areas and they'll be done!

Chaos lords cloak is finished.

Got the two lords primed and started on their bases and the boss cloak. Decided to give the sorcerer an icon and a familiar, the bloat toad from the Seraphon range. I'm thinking the toad should be orange with purple markings to match the color scheme of the Sorcerer unless y'all have a better idea.

Big fan of the varied looks for the cultists. The color combo on the cloak is stellar.

I definitely want to see you convert and paint a metal Abaddon for your Iron Warriors!

I wholeheartedly agree with youwashock on the cultists, their mixed colours add to the flavour of a rag-tag band

Random Chaos Stuff (Vintage Warhammer Quest WIP) @ 2020/01/10 14:37:46

Post by: MegaDave

Nothing too exciting, they're just cultists. But they're finished cultists! Here they are hobnobbing with their traditionally painted friends.

I can pick out the contrast cultists fairly easily, but if I hadn't painted them I don't know that I'd even bat an eye differentiating them.

Contrast is interesting, there are certain colors that are better than others, but I'm pleased with it over all. Not sure I would have bought in if I hadn't been gifted the paints, but they are nice for a quick tabletop paintjob.

Now onto my terminator lords!

Interesting to see how well the contrast paints work on the cultists. Was there a big time saving as against your usual routine?

Great work on the rest - really nice consistent work

Ya know, yeah, it did speed thing up a bit. I got them done in a few nights, and they probably would have taken a whole week to finish off other wise.

The main thing is not having to find and open as many different paints. Contrast is one bottle to three for a regular color. Helps a bit since apparently I use ALL THE COLORS!!1!!!1!

Got some of the orange started on the termie lords, and almost done with the sorcerer's cloak.

Would have gotten more done but I have a gender reveal party and a birthday party to go to today. Cake!

Green I think was from the shade and lighting, I brought him back up to full gray. You actually gave me an idea for the future though!

It is! It's difficult not to go overboard with it and splatter everything in gore, but the basing element really gets the point across without overwhelming the model itself. Thanks!

Got started on the next project, my second chaos crucible.

My first one looks like this:

I was going for a neutral chaos look, so I thought the daemonettte hide would balance out the Khorney corpse boil.

Just a little drybrushing to start, and the interior of the cauldron.

(Puppetswar corpses, I believe. Been a while since I glued them in there...)

Here's the close up for ya. (I figured someone would want to see them )

Can't wait to get the side-by-side!

Don Qui Hotep wrote:Nice work! I really enjoyed following your Iron Warriors thread. It's exciting to see some contemporary models given the same love and attention. How do you get that nice, pastel orange?

Thank you! It's always a battle to make things look nice but not take weeks to finish. The orange is just Jokaero Orange, Nuln Oil and then another few thin layers of Jokaero Orange. For any edge highlights I then use Fire Dragon Bright.

I worked on some of the gold while my wife watched one of those movies where they pretend to get married for X reason and then fall in love for real after the awkward family apology.

This is what I accomplished in that time. I forgot how much of a pain these crucibles are to detail!!!

I wish is wasn't that far off, but progress is sloooooooooooow.

Last night was a Jane Austen movie. Couldn't tell you which one, but my wife said the main character was poor. I think there was a lot of crying.

I managed to use that time to finish the front and start on one of the sides. Boring photo, I know. Eventually it will look as cool as the other one...

...eventually.

Hah, yeah I'm just salty about how much of a slog it is. I actually don't enjoy the painting process much, just the finished product so the middle is always hard for me. Glad you like it so far though!

Got the bottom of the tower finished tonight!

I was pretty stoked I also got the warpstone painted.

In my spare time waiting for paint and dry brushes to dry, I got my sorcerer put together.

I wasn't particularly fond of the rune or the head, so they got swapped. Still need to glue the head and greenstuff the join, but I like him.

Hah yeah, I only bought him because I needed a 40mm base. But figured I'd paint him up. If only they'd kept the original helmets as inspiration!

Got some more work done, first layer of gold is starting to get on there. Got the sorcerer greenstuffed as well, so he'll be ready to paint as soon as I finish the crucible.

I'm going to need a new pot of liberator gold when I'm finished!

I have used resin a little bit before. For this I used a two-parter called Envirotex Lite. After it cured for a few days I blobbed the blood gone on and called it done.

Yeah my armies are in a good spot, between all my chaos stuff and some orks I have about 6K ready to go, all painted. Just need more space to deploy it on!

Got the board constructed, just needs some paint/texture.

Made it into 3 2'X4' sections so I can go modular and build scenery into future sections.

The board in all it's plywood glory!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Wife took this action shot while begging me not to poke my eye out...

Jokes on her though, I stabbed my finger on one of the little spikes, drew blood even. Good to know it's been properly dedicated to the chaos gods!

Got the purple finished, so the first stage is complete.

Gold detailing is up next, that's the hard part. Making good progress though, and gluing sand to my board will give me a break from this if I need it.

Oh yeah, big green spires inbound!

Don Qui Hotep wrote:Excited to see the progress! When painting lots of scenery, how many coats do you do for the base? Do you thin the paint at all to keep it even?

Well for my scenery, I try to drybrush as much as possible, so it's right out of the pot. The purple is just kinda mashed on there until it looks even.

The gold is also right out of the pot as I'd have to go back and do a second coat, and that would give me a mental breakdown.

So yeah. Right out of the pot, drybrush as much as you can, and switch brushes a lot! (Somewhere Duncan's cries of anguish are giving birth to another chaos god...)

Made some good progress on the gold, got a lot further today than I thought I would.

Still have the whole other side but it's about 40% done with the gold.

Also got a few boards sanded and spray painted.

One more board to spray, and then it's drybrushing and static grass time.

That fortress is coming along nicely and I feel you on the spiky stuff. Currently painting WarCry terrain and those wooden elements are spikey to, although not as much as this stuff.

Excited to see the finished table, that terrain will invite epic battles!

This is looking great. I've got a full 'ring' of this Dreadfort stuff awaiting construction, and painting it looks like something that would drive me insane (all that gold!).

My question to you is: Why purple?

Yeah the spikes are a real hazard! Only other minis that poked me so much were the old plastic monopose goblins from the WHFB 4th edition.

H.B.M.C. wrote:This is looking great. I've got a full 'ring' of this Dreadfort stuff awaiting construction, and painting it looks like something that would drive me insane (all that gold!).

Oh man, you have the whole thing? I don't know if you could pay me enough for that madness!

I chose purple for a few reasons. It's one of my favorite colors, and I don't see it on the table too much.

I wanted a unique color scheme, and all I could find on Google were red or black dread forts. There was a neat one in a WD where it was all just bone colored, but I didn't fancy it for my table.

When I managed a GW store for a hot minute, they had us paint the intro tables and Sigmarite Mausoleum using this painting guide: https://youtu.be/kyv-Mc7nIz0

I really liked the look of it, and thought of using it for a while but thought it might be too Christmassy with the cauldrons of blood on the crucibles.

So I looked through the paint rack to find something I liked in a similar chroma, and Daemonette Hide was the winner!

I figured the purple slaanesh color would off set the "khornate" blood and I threw the green spires on there to give a call out to nurgle.

I was going for as chaos god neutral as I could get but still look spooky and/or daemonic.

So that is why I chose purple!

Been a few days since I could get any work done, but I was able to finish the other side of the short tower and wall.

Roughly 60% finished?

Also took advantage of the warm-ish weather and got the boards fully painted.

The green spots are guides for the glue and to help in case I miss any spots with the static grass.

Weather permitting I'll have the table finished by Sunday!

Hey thanks, same! Less than two weeks before the game, but I'll probably take some army shots ahead of time.

It's been a close call, I am inching closer though. I only have one wall panel left, I am hoping to have the gold done tomorrow and it's pretty quick after that.

The second table is complete!

Got it clear coated this morning, so that static grass ain't going anywhere!

I think the terrain blends in well.

Ok, back to that fething dreadhold....

I don't have that big of an update, but I finally managed to finish painting on the gold trim!

I have to go back and shade it all now, but that goes pretty quick. After that stage, I should fly through it!

Ok, been a few days since I was able to make any progress! I work for a hospital, specifically in the Pandemic warehouse so as you can imagine I have been a little busy doing other things lately.

But on to the update! I had been shading the gold when time permitted, and got the whole thing drybrushed with screaming skull. And in honor of St. Patrick's Day, I got the green spires finished tonight with the help of a Guinness! (Or three... )

Not much left now, just have to do the skulls and a bit of gold trim touch up and job's good 'un.

Sadly the big game has been pushed back as one of the players is 65+ but that gives me time to finish up the sorcerer I've been putting off.

'Night!

Spires! There are spires! What a great centerpiece.

Bummer about the game, also. I imagine a lot of us are going through gaming withdrawal right now. That said, I haven't been as painting productive as I've been in the past week since probably high school!

Looking forward to seeing the Sorcerer get done up. I see him lurking in the background there!

Not to get corny, but also it sounds like you have a very necessary job that is going to be very tasking for the foreseeable future, so please know it is appreciated! I think we've all probably got people close to us that are getting affected (my brother lives in Japan and the local response has not been very effective). Knowing that people in the medical community are also wargamers has just instilled me with a lot of confidence for the future - hobbyists get things done!

Yes! Won't stop, can't stop!

It is finished!

Probably the most grueling single model I have painted. (And I painted a reaver titan way back when!)

It was technically easy to paint, but the size and shape made it very difficult to work with.

Glad to have these all finished, never want to paint any of it ever again!

Had to show the scale of the thing! It's a big terrain piece if it can hide a knight.

Man the walls! Repel the enemy!

Thanks! If you paint yours, just don't assemble the full thing until after you've painted it! My problem was mainly it was so heavy and bulky, made it extremely difficult to get to some of the inside detail. It's also mind-numbingly repetitive.

Gobert, I had days I was close to insanity lol!

Speaking of stockpiled models, I really haven't been in the painting mood after the fortress and with how busy I've been at the hospital.

This poor sorcerer will have to wait a while longer for paint.

Decided I was in the mood for building and converting, so I got out all of my quarantine pile and some other random half-conceived projects. We've got a Nurgle bastion, a Nurgle daemon prince and a chaos renegade predator.

Got some work done on this old bastion. I was missing a few parts and decided to turn it into a giant feculant gnarlmaw.

I had a bunch of leftover bitz from my great unclean one, I used most of the here and have a few more for the daemon prince.

Gnarlmaw stills needs some greenstuff and sand, but not bad for an evening's work.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks! Hah, i didn't even think of that as a WIP shot but i guess it was!

And here it is out of the box!

Got a nurgly horn on his head and some wings. Obviously going to need some greenstuff work...

Gave him a glaive/billhook made out of the GUO knife, also took off that stupid middle finger they gave the daemon prince axe.

Replaced his shoulder guard with a Helbrute pad, and gave him a skull to drag around instead of a rock!

Eventually there will be a few Nurglings on there, but I figured everything would be easier to paint with them separate for now.

Have a happy hump day!

I think I probably will Nurgle it up a bit in the greenstuff phase. A little too pristine at the moment.

Got this little gun platform ready, nothing too special.

This one I had fun with, lots of cutting! Mini coping saws are great though, especially when you forget the main gun is offset! I think it looks suitably chaosy without being over the top.

Managed to finish the gnarlmaw/rusty bunker today! It was a lot of fun to model and paint.

Gnarlmaw had to have a mouth!

Also needed a giant Nurgle bell, ding dong!

Nurgle bath tub!

The first primaris lieutenant I've painted, a dead Dark Angel.

Splish splash!

Tentacles and a weird skull plant. Seemed appropriate.

Used a lot of Nurgle's Rot on this, wanted all the damage to bleed slime, like it was alive.

Nurgle's really fun with the humor mixed with body horror and grossness. I was just happy the vision turned out ok.

Thanks! The skull roses I think I've had for two years after I convinced a buddy to let me have them out of his treeman kit.

Not much of an update but managed to get this AA field gun finished today. Tried to make it a little more beat up and weathered than some of my other stuff.

Always good to see more Nurglings and chipping away at many things simultaneously is a good method to suddenly have lots of stuff finished.
And I'm glad you decided to paint the demon prince green. I still have the Fomoroid Crusher to paint and am contemplating grey or green skin and your mini shows that green works.

Daemon Prince is looking to be coming along quite nicely, too, hanging out there behind the sorceror. Your conversion work on him is going to make that model shine.

Thanks! I think once he's finished it'll be more Nurgle than fomoroid, but not obnoxiously so. Here's hoping!

Glad I could help out! I just thought I'd go green since the box art is grayish.

Yeah, I figure he's the psychic might of the model, casting rot-fly spells to protect his master.

Got the Predator finished, came together all of a sudden, wasn't expecting to get anything finished today! Excited!

Happy with how the skull turned out.

Arakasi wrote:Ah, I thought the highlights on the purple were too thick. The grey and metal work look really good though, especially the backpack.

Yeah, the cloak didn't quite turn out the way I wanted. The main problem is that i used a contrast paint over the brushed on wraithbone, and it was a little splotchy. So the highlights actually covered up some of that, but then I couldn't go back to thin them out without redoing the whole thing. Learning experience for sure!

Do you have no shame!?!

Congrats on banishing the pile o’shame, must be a good feeling. You should buy a big box of minis to celebrate!

The sorcerer looks good to me, I think the bold highlights add a bit of glow. This seems to be a problem with the contrast paints that rework becomes quite challenging compared to standard layering.

Thanks! Yeah, contrast can be a little more difficult if you mess up. Real though, I learned that the spray cans are the way to go if you're using contrast!

I actually do still have a few projects I want to work on, they just aren't miniatures exactly. I'll post a few cryptic pictures when I feel like dragging out the paints again!

It is the weirdest feeling, but a good one!

Youwashock suggested an army shot, so here's everything I own that's painted.

Here it is, my Pile of Fame!

It's about 6,000 points of random chaos stuff

Pulled out some things I've been saving up to make some terrain out of. Haven't done too much technical scratch building, so I figure this will be good practice for some future projects I have in mind.

Didn't realize I had so many DIFFERENT kinds of cans, had to get them all sorted out.

I really appreciate all the kind words about the "Pile of Fame." The encouragement along the way was much appreciated!

After taking a few weeks off, I started working on the next project, my Sector MeCANicus. I'm taking it slow as I haven't done much scratch built terrain before, so this first one is a proof of concept can.

I got to buy my ratcheting ork power Klaw to cut pvc pipe with, and spent way too much time marking out rivet locations on my paper. For anyone wondering, I used the card from a Kirkland Signature lasagna. Not bad, but better reheated the next day than right out of the oven.

Anyhoo, got it to this point, and now all I have to do is glue on each of those little rivets. I decided to use 2mm half rounds instead of trying to punch them out like some of you other nutters!

Can't wait to get paint on it and get started on the big industrial stuff....

A strong start to what sounds like a fun project. You're definitely a MeCAN-DOicus and I'm excited for your larger scale industrial stuff. Where's the base from?

The base is 2mm foamed pvc I had laying around. I actually don't know if you need to do anything special to pvc before you paint it, guess we'll find out together. I'll just spray and pray!

Got all the rivets glued on, gonna get the sand down and hopefully basecoated today.

Meticulous work. A batch of these is going to look sweet. Priming should be good for the PVC. If you are terribly concerned, you can give it a swipe with fine grit sandpaper before spraying.

Eep, that was on me! I was just curious if you could use PVC as it was or if you had to treat it special. Thanks for yours and MegaDave's collective wisdom.

Post by: MegaDave

Youwashock, yeah a brown primer stuck to it just fine, no prep needed. I was pretty happy with how the rivets turned out.

Don Qui Hotep, looks like you can use pvc as is! I always just assume you can drown something in primer to make it work.

Got it basecoated, now I get to dirty it up! I'm thinking about making the pipe gray, just to change up the color. Any ideas?

Random Chaos Stuff (Vintage Warhammer Quest WIP) @ 2020/05/25 16:32:46

Yep, already looking very industrial. With such a vibrant yellow I can almost hear it calling out for hazard stripes... then again I could almost see it just getting dirtied up lots and remaining mostly yellow. Could be a cool theme?

Random Chaos Stuff (Vintage Warhammer Quest WIP) @ 2020/05/26 02:21:31

Post by: MegaDave

Got a little more work done on test can. Pipe got painted gray, and I put two heavy washes of agrax earthshade all over.

The wash pooled/streaked quite a bit, but it's ok because there is a lot going on top that will cover it all up. Going to bring the color back up with a few drybrushes, then there will be some chipping and grimy streaky-leaky stuff added.

Gobert, I thought about hazard stripes are but trying to do that on round objects terrifies me! I think I'm going to leave them off for now, but they'll definitely get added to any platformer areas added to the pieces going forward.

Random Chaos Stuff (Vintage Warhammer Quest WIP) @ 2020/05/26 02:29:35

Post by: Don Qui Hotep

Nice work. The washes over the primer have created a very fun industrial yellow that fits the theme perfectly. Scratch-built terrain is so fun to look at, the way that it elevates the piece so far beyond its component parts. Looking forward for the "grimy streaky-leaky stuff" because that is my favorite part of all terrain features.

Oh yeah, I'm not done with the hazards. Just need something a little more rectangular.

Tonight I got everything drybrushed up to their starting colors and a highlight, then chipped it all to hell.

I used the basing paint to create lumpy areas that will end up as rust piles. I thought it was a good way to cover up some areas I wasn't completely happy with. Can't do anything else with it until it dries, so have a good one!

Thanks! I'm liking it even more with the orange on it. Did a great job of covering up some gaps.

Viterbi wrote:Love the name for your terrain, you should trademark it Great work on the first piece, you found a good color scheme there!

Glad you like it, never know until you try I guess!

Got the rust and oil streaks done tonight, as well as finishing the rust.

Used vallejo acylic model washes for the streaks and oil stains. They're pretty neat, a little more pigment that the gw shades.

I didn't like this gap, so I decided to cover it with some plant life.

It covered it alright, but fun fact, that vallejo acylic wash takes forever to dry and the flock started getting stuck in it! I was able to brush most of it off, but be warned if you ever use it.

Letting all that dry and hopefully should have all the final details finished tomorrow. I'll be making the plant life a little more irregular as well, can't have it looking like a pipe cleaner!

Thanks, I thought it was a decent solution. I've never washed it before, but it would probably soak it up and stain it, so for color variation it'd probably work. I'll have to do some test fungus sometime!

Finished the old can today, clearcoated and everything.

Pretty happy it with how it turned out, being a soup can and all.

Bulked out the greenery a bit as well.

Now that I have a color scheme and know the rivets won't fall off, I just have to figure out exactly what I want to do with the rest of those cans!

Well finally had some free time and bought a couple of kits, so here I am!

I had 10 plaguebearers that needed rebased so I figured I'd get 20 more and make the full unit. Still a lot of painting to be done, but they are on their way.

Also started working on a nurgle soul grinder, I had a ton of bits left over from making Rotigus and I don't believe in wasting bits! I think after this build I will have actually used every bit from the GUO kit, which makes me happy.

Lots of pinning on this model, it's all bailing wire and duct tape at this point!

He is beautiful, in the most disgusting and awesome way. Really love the way all the colours work together; looking him over is a bit like reading a Where's Wally book. The verdigris and luminescent slime are great additions.

So close! Wonder what will be added to the pile next

Appreciate it, I was worried about using so much greenstuff originally.

Thank you!

Well I managed to finished the plaguebearers and the spoilpox scrivener.

Close up of the gribblies.

And a shot of all the gooey bois in their natural habitat.

Next up is a full copy of the original Warhammer Quest, most of which is still on the sprue! My good friend knows I'm a sucker for vintage stuff and gave me a copy for Christmas!

There's some serious awesome on display in that group picture. The centerpiece models are fabulous. Now, onto that next bit about Warhammer Quest. In what sounds to be near-pristine condition. That is going to be something to see!

Too kind, as always. But look below! Original models, undefiled for quite some time!

The box is a little banged up on the edges but still good, the books aren't in the greatest of condition but I can read them!

Man, who would have thought I'd be able to clip these off the sprue so many years after production.

I think it’s the background and tree, but you last Nurgle pic has a real Christmassy vibe. All Reds and Greens and Bells! They look awesome though, a real horde of slathering death!

That is one incredibly generous friend! New on sprue must go for a pretty penny. I hope you keep us well informed on progress.

Thanks gobert! And you're right, Allen Blount IS a very generous friend and I'm very grateful to have him in my life.

If you didn't get to experience them in your youth, let me introduce you to one of the greatest sprues GW ever made!

The giant rat in particular was always a favorite of mine, but these 4 little gribblies were a great bargain combo of fantasy creatures.

They took way longer on moldline removal than I would have expected, but it's time to get some paint on them!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Got a test snotling done, whaddya think?

I had some contrast paint I wanted to use so I used the recipe from the painting coach, which is plaguebearer flesh shaded with biel-tan green.

I thought it made for a nice bright skin tone. Any thoughts/changes before I finish the rest of them?

I mean he's just a snotling but I gotta start somewhere...

Random Chaos Stuff (Vintage Warhammer Quest WIP) @ 2021/01/17 10:47:48

Post by: gobert

That’s a great looking snotling, I say go for it! The Contrast paint works well even on these relatively simple sculpts. You’ll be done in next to no time if you stick with the Contrast. *buckles up for the ride

I’ve found the old stuff I have is much harder to clean mould lines from. I guess that’s part of the improvement in the moulds over the past millennia. Saying that, some of the new stuff is so detailed it’s hard to spot them until you get some paint on them

Random Chaos Stuff (Vintage Warhammer Quest WIP) @ 2021/01/17 16:32:39

Post by: MegaDave

Well I can't go against your advise gobert, so I'm sticking with that snotling skin! Yeah the moldlines were a little silly, but I wonder if that isn't a little difference in the plastic, it seems slightly more brittle on the older ones.

Got a test rat and bat done, thoughts?

The rat was super easy, guilliman flesh all over followed by gore grunta fur.

Random Chaos Stuff (Vintage Warhammer Quest WIP) @ 2021/01/17 20:20:24

Post by: gobert

Ratty looks good. I’d probably have gone for blacks, greys or dark browns. The bone colour helps with definition, but I think it might be a bit stark against the black.

Agreed on the old plastic, I wonder if it has just aged or whether it was always like that. My old brain can’t remember what it was like Back in the day

"Just a snotling..." Famous last words.

Yep, I like him better. Viterbi’s idea of mixing them up would be good, maybe throw in some more colours, like Black Templar and do some mixing for variety?

I think the idea of a variety of bats is a good idea, it is a fantasy dungeon after all!

youwashock wrote:"Just a snotling..." Famous last words.

Yeah I think the slightly darker bat works better, so I'm glad I was talked into darkening him up.

Good to know there is such a concensus on the bats lol! Time to go off the deep end of bat colors...

Got the snotlings finished, just waiting on decent weather to clear coat them.

Finished off half the rats as well, a few different shades of brown, black and grey in there along with albino rat!

Went total fantasy vampire bat for the second one, I really like it.

Viterbi wrote:Lovely work on the different rat furs and cool to see both differently colored bats next to each other. Really cool contrast between old school vampire colors and more natural bat.
Thanks, I took that idea and ran with it!

First up, the rats are all finished. They don't photograph well on the sticks but I was happy with the color variation on them.

Last rat that I did was greenish, kind of like a plague rat from Clan Pestilens. I really liked him, so I figured if I can do a plague rat, why not....

.... a plague bat! Also pictured, classic black bat. Boooorrring!

Then I went crazy and painted a Tzeentch bat and Slaanesh Bat.

And then we have two big brown bats to keep me from making a metallic bat or something.

I figure the chaos bats can each have a little extra rule, like Tzeentch bat can suck magic out and the Khorne bat can cause critical hits. What's that, a Khorne bat you say?! Better get back to painting!

Hah, the Tzeentch bat I think is my favorite. Glad everyone talked me into doing different colored bats.

Since I can't spray anything due to the cold, I started working cleaning off mold lines. I had to stop because they were making my hand cramp something bad. There was a ton of flash all around those minis!

Yes the different colors has been working quite well, so I'm continuing that trend, but I had to really think about how to use all the different browns!

Clubotaur #2, the clubbening.

Axeotaur #1, the choppening.

All three of the minotaurs romping in the fields...

Axeotaur was actually an alternative sculpt, I'm not sure if he's the minotaur boss or just for kicks.

Don Qui Hotep wrote:Great variety on the Minotaurs, really helps add character to help differentiate the similar sculpts. Quite a roster of baddies you've accumulated!
Certainly getting there, I feel like I'm in the home stretch, even though I'm not lol

Thanks! It's pretty simple, stormhost silver with a agrax earthshade shade followed by a null oil shade.

youwashock wrote:They look great. No BS.

Managed to get some work done today on the greenskins. Figured it was an easy/messy stage so I just did all the skin at the same time. The orks will get darkened up a bit to keep the goblins the lightest.

I tell you what though, warboss green over black is a pain, almost as bad as yellow. Took 3 coats to get a solid color!

Finished up the skin on everyone tonight. It's hard to tell in the pic, but the orcs got a second shade of biel tan green while the goblins got a light brush of ushabti bone. The contrast between their skin is a little more apparent in real life.

Started working on the weapons for the gobbos, I'm going to stick with making them all different colors, been working for me pretty well so far, no need to mess up a good thing!

Will do, after I finish all my homework for the weekend. College papers really get in the way of painting goblins!

Yes, I hate myself, obviously!

On a totally unrelated note, I managed to score an original land raider for my 2nd Ed. Iron Warriors!

Here she is in all her Rogue Trader glory!

Obviously there's a bit of battle damage and some thick paint that needs removed, you'd think the blood angels of all chapters would take better care of their relics...

Luckily I had an old coffee can sitting around waiting to be used for my sector mecanicus project, which fit the tank perfectly.

I'm just hoping her machine spirit can forgive me for drowning her in purple power!

The other "nice" thing about this model is that it finally gives me an excuse to buy some blue stuff to clone the heavy bolter and lascannons, since there was only one pair. Excited to strip that paint and get started!

Yeah sadly the Oyumaru and millilut didn't work out for me, it was close but didn't quite fit the bill.

Hah yeah the can is perfect for it. Thanks, I liked the way the skin turned out.

Been busy with school and house hunting, so painting hasn't been much of a priority. Move into the new house in a few weeks, and I have 3 weeks of from school! Exciting times!

So here's the land raider, all cleaned up and painted silver.

Since I wasn't able to clone the lascannon sponson, I simply bought another MK1 land raider.
It was in pretty bad shape, it looks like 3 layers of paint.

Into the can of stripping!!!

I figured I'd use the pieces from the new one to get all the parts for the original, and I'll learn how to cast rubber molds for the new one using the extra bits. I think it's a good plan???

Not shown but I painted all of the boots on the goblins black. They're boots, you don't need to see them.

It is so great to see that old school land raider again. I am looking forward to you giving it new life and getting it back onto a tabletop somewhere. Thanks for the action shots of the stripping. I've used Purple Power and had pretty good results with metal minis (although it still took me a lot of scrubbing and scraping to get the gunk out of the recesses) but I have not tried it on plastic. Glad to see it works without damaging the plastic.

The land raider looks good in silver. It’s a shame the Oyumaru and milliput failed, but yay for another Land Raider! I find it quite tricky making parts, my best results came from pressing into the two sides of the mould separately then pressing them together. The hard bit is getting the amount in each side correct. You either end up with too much so the parts end up too big or too little with gaps. Your solution of Cannibalisation of parts is a long tried and tested military process anyway, so good luck!

Hah, it's a sad sack landraider for sure. I'll get her fixed up eventually.

The Riddle of Steel wrote:It is so great to see that old school land raider again.
Yeah it didn't hurt it at all, and the stuff it couldn't get I used easy off oven cleaner and that took care of the rest.

Thanks! It's been fun so far

Yeah that and the milliput isn't as sturdy as I'd like, much too brittle for the lascannons long term.

Spent some more time on the gobbos, they're starting to get there. Very colorful little fellas!

Land Raider has gotten its tracks all muddied up. Did the first pass with Typhus Corrosion and then followed up more heavily on the outside with Stirland Mud.

After it dries I'm going to give it a good drybrush, but that mud takes forever to dry so done for the night!

I really like seeing such a variety of colors on those goblins. They're just so lively and fun! I think that the purple bow is my favorite.

Ah, the classics...making copies of small pieces of the old plastics can be done with resin and a rubber mold (they are also simpler than the very detailed plastics GW releases now). Just make certain you have one to use as a template.

Good luck.

Those are some fancy gobbos, the coloured bows work really well. I’m loving how the simple colour changes are making these all look different despite being batches of the same mini. Great work!

Been a little busy the last 9 months, didn't realize I had been gone that long. Bought a new house, bought a new car, started a new job and started taking some more classes so I've been a bit busy. It was one of those structurally sound houses that needed a ton of interior cosmetic work.

So I finally got to drag out the paints, got a little work done on the old land raider. Mud is done, just need to finish the black parts to get ready for the hazard stripes. Hopefully I can get back to painting on a more regular schedule.

Good to see you’re still ticking over! The Raider is looking cooler with every brush stroke. The treads look nice and dirty, but we’re all hoping to see the hazard stripes come out!

Yes, Land Raider is definitely happening!

And I'm working on those hazard stripes, just got the tape down.

Well, she's pretty much done!

I ran out of 2nd ed Iron Warriors decals so had to source those on eBay, once they are here I'll get the decals on and clearcoat everything.

Hopefully she's living up to expectations, will get some army shots once the decals are on.

Great addition to your OG Iron Warriors, ultra crisp hazards per usual I had forgotten about how gobliny green your bases are, and just how many Chaos Androids you have O_O

Oooh i love a good army shot! A great looking bunch of Iron Warriors, neat and crisp work on the hazard stripes. I’m surprised you laid the black down before the yellow, I guess clean up is easier though.

What’s next? Back to the hero quest?

Yeah I probably should have done black over yellow, but sometimes I do things without thinking about it, but I think it does make the tidy up portion easier like you said.

They're eagerly awaiting thir 2nd wound and other updates.

Got a couple of the goblins finished, I like the gold and silver alternating bows.

Hoping to get the archers done soon so I can work on the spearmen.

I think your Legionaries will be pleased! Good luck on plugging through the archers, like the bats and spiders I like how you're alternating schemes to have a more diverse set of baddies!

That army shot is gold, amazing paintjob and the bases just make this army, such a fun contrast to their armor.

Alright, got the rest of the gobbo archers done!

Thanks to everyone who suggested the different colors on this set way back when, I think it works nicely on the single pose minis and is reminiscent of the era they were sculpted in.

Next up are the Spearman, and then onto the orcs.

Good to know 'ol red is the winner of the fashion show haha, I'll keep that in mind for the orcs.

Managed to finish a goblin spearman, shields will be painted after they are.

The others I went a little crazy with some of the colors, I suppose if they're too nuts I can always paint over them again after I'm done...

Good, clean painting and beautifully vibrant color. The dash of purple is especially nice.

Thanks youwashock, I quite liked the purple myself. It's fun using some random colors I wouldn't in say, a marine force or something.

Speaking of random colors, the rest of the spearmen were "finished" tonight.

And here are all the gobbos together.

Shields for the little buggers are up next, then onto the orcs.

Love the classic gobbos - got many of them in the "to paint" queue, and they have been there for some time. Must get around to them, and may well be stealing your schemes!

Thanks for sharing

Thanks guys, glad you like them. I have been trying hard to have a "clean" paint job on these models, good to hear my efforts have paid off!

Viterbi, I actually use my phone camera to check out my minis up close to fix mistakes lol, I REALLY zoom in the sometimes. It really does help with getting the eyes straight though!

Got the shields done, and got the orcs boots cleaned up and started working on some of their metal armor.
