The Building, Painting and Adventures of Terror-Watt
Project S.E.G.A (Secret Gargant) started 28th December 2019

Hi, I have been playing 40k for far to long, and since 2nd Edition (like most 40k players) I have always wanted to own a 40k Warlord Titan!

2 years ago I decided to collect Orks (for the 3rd time) and decided that a Dread-Waaaagh (elite CC army) was my ‘cup-of-tea’. After collecting a mighty ~3000 point Ork Dread Waaagh lead by my mighty Mekboss ‘Superfix’, and with 2 more Stompas on their way, I though my Ork collection was complete... Then just before Christmas 2019, I found a delightful piece of old 40k Ork art and a very, very dangerous dream was born:

With no real money (but a big and growing family) #ForgeworldhatesNewZealand, I would have to rely on the Ork Big Mek inside me and would build it myself!

I made a scale sketch/template for the height of 22” to distribute weight and manage the pose well, and I set to work finding bits and plant pots for the base structure. This was a combo of old Ork kits (mostly the hated Gorkanaught models) and garage and garden rubbish.

In an effort to look after the only planet we have, I set the lofty goal on only using recycled/repurposed things and stealing my kids toys. I have raided many 2nd hand stores and ‘dump shops’ looking for parts. I have come to love 32mm piping! The best find so far: 2 toilet cistern for $2 (perfect base components for both arms)!

Rules wise the Warlord/‘Gargant’ is armed with:
Quake Cannon = Gutbuster/Body - Superfluffy!
Sunfury Plasma = Mega Zappa/Right Arm - Superfluffy!
2xTwin Mega Bolters = Rotor Kannon/Left Arm - Very Kool and visually matches the art!

No one in my gaming group is aware that I’m making Terror-Watt (so please don’t let them know) and I plan to unveil him as a surprise at our next 40,000 point Apocalypse Game. I also plan to keep an in-game battle record of Terror-Watts exploits (over the inevitable years) in this thread as well as a photo diary of the build and painting process.

Update: I sketched up a 22” Warlord size (in the background on the wall) for scalding and pose check:

Fluff I wrote for my Ork army and Terror-Watt:

Bad Mek Supafix wrestled deep in the gloomy bowls of the clanking and grinding giant Mekfactory to connect an enormous neutron coupling into a primary cortex of a starship grade plasma reactor. Supafix kicked Nibbla away - his eternally overly enthusiastic pet cybersquig - and nodded.
The huge dread Drippa stomped over and spurted a glowing blue gel on it, just before it slid into the gamma-shielded cowling.
Supafix didn’t look up from his welding as he snatched Grunks arm as the ever clumsy assistant dangled off the gantry that he just bumbled backward off.
“Careful Grunk!” he growled.
“Juice!” he barked into the coms. High above him in a cleaner and well-lit control room, a Grot threw a pair of large breakers and was wildly electrocuted and another grot called Lunk, with a cap on, instinctively cowered as he pressed ‘da big red button’.
Supafix reflexively lashed out and booted a dirty bleeding sack that yelped in surprise at the unprovoked violence. The gantry they were all on vibrated with a sharp resonance and Supafix cybork face smirked behind his favorite blast mask as distant turbines spun up and the hum of capacitor banks and power fields swelled.
His favorite yellow blast mask was only worn on the very best of days... or on the very worst of days. When another mighty Ork warmachine would roar to life and with thunderous stomps, murderously stride out the giant gates of Mektown, or his Mekfactory might detonate for the third time! Or was it the fifth?
Supafix kicked the dirty sack one last time for good measure with his oily armored boot, as he contemplated the impact of what months’ worth of work was about to culminate in. There was indeed a good reason to smile! In the bleeding sack was a particularly malicious Umie Machine Spirit that he has personally pried from the dying heart of an uge Umie Titan nearly three years ago on Taravin 4.
Supafix had ever so carefully bashed, kicked and starved the sack for years, he even got Lunk pee on it and Nibbla to chew it, and with applied horrendous violence he cajoled the feisty spirit with to accept its place and then persuade it to be willingish to undertake this radical transition of sorts.
As raw power primed the core of the plasma reactor the giant machine on which they all stood twitched, throwing everyone to the deck and some screaming off the edge to their deaths! Reflexively a giant foot stomped far below on the scorched blast crater floor made from the impact of the Kill Krooza that is now Mektown.
The place screeched with excited Grots as anticipation swelled but Supafix was concentrating hard and everyone scurried away to their shielded stations, or ran in terror for somewhere to hide.
The reactor coughed and fired once illuminated the massive cavern with a pulse of harsh white light and charging the Mekshop with ozone. As Supafix braced himself on the gantry and stooped to pick up the sack it chugged again and flashed against his power field. He stood and bellowed over the resonance “Turn da dampnaz ovv! Open da exhausts nn hit da frottle!” Shielding the dirty sack with his body, he struggled through the billowing chem-steam, choking ozone, and wild showers of sparks to stand against the plasma core.
“Dampers off” squeaked the coms. “Throttle at Max!” Lunks voice squawked excitedly. Supafix wrenched open a small blast portal low on the core that gushed uncontained wild plasma to the dirty grated floor.
The reactor spat and chugged “1!” Chug “2!” Chug “3!” Supafix hurled the sack into the spitting core and slammed the blast door shut, cutting the stream of wild plasma. He activated the locking bolts. They clanked. He ran.
It was not often that a Mekboss ran, but the first few waking moments of an Ork Gargants bloody, wrath filled and horrifically murderous life was both a highly motivating and undeniably good reason.
Supafix ran out of gantry and leapt into midair, snagged a long dangling chain with his power Klaw and swung away. A terrible cacophony of newly birthed destruction and bewildering violence broke out behind him as his latest client and New Kaptin of the Gargant fought with all his might against the savage will of the newly awakened spirit of the titanic Ork warmachine... no longer in a dirty sack.
The Bad Mek grabbed another chain and tugged, it lifted him and he accelerated upward. Supafix narrowly missed the plummeting counterweight with a single still growling and newly unfortunate squig on it.
Supafix landed on the sun blasted upper deck of his Mekshop, to watch the eastern side of his Mekfactory bulge and then blow out, as the new Gargant crashed through. He smirked as the falling wall crushed a rival mekshop. Everyone was staring with glee at the raw destruction as the newly freed Gargant was driven through Mektown at the front gate demolishing whole blocks of garages and workshops. The Gargant triumphantly bellowed huge clouds of smoke as it stomped through and scrapped the north tower and onto the Blastlands for ‘field trials’.
It would come back in a week or so for proper arming and refueling. The dread sized round hole in the wall stood testament that Supafix had learned long ago to arm a walker AFTER the pilot had full control of the new grumpy stomping tower of mechanical mayhem.
“Anuva gud launch!” chucked Drippa as he marveled at the trail of flattened workshops and fires.
Supafix raised his favorite blastmask to revel his Cybork face “What next?” he bellowed with a rye smirk.
“Rush job:” Grunk Blurted. “4 Stompas, 6 Morks, 7 Gorks and a Telporta for Krooldakka, wiv a guuuuud profit!” “Let’s get lootin den!” Supafix ordered. No one moved. Awestruck they all just stared at the raw stompy power of the Gargant in the Blastlands “Dis is gunna make uz eeps of teef... Everyones gunna want one of Doze!”

I’m going to focus on the head now and have just ordered a lot of parts and bits to do so. While they are in the mail I’m going to focus on shaping the head to the right proportions to take the new components well.

Lobotomised Terror-Watt to make room for the viewing platform and base for all the Mek bits and distressed the ‘angry eyebrow’ which is yet to receive the finishing touch of rivets!

More work on the Gutbuster covering pipe threads and joining to breach, generally making it more believable and congruent. I’m dead keen to apply a variety of rivets to it as the final touches but need a good amount more work on the recoil mechanism first:

The bits arrived!

Unfortunately (as I suspect with all builds of this size) the details didn’t take up as nearly as much real estate as I had hoped. I will have to add significantly more Kool Mek bits to make it look like a real viewing/coms deck!

Thanks very much, but the cogs are the under layer to the armour, the cogs will only be seen through/under specially placed vents or battle damage.

This will add a 3rd layer (top detail, armour plates and then cogs/cables under to the vast majority of the model which is overlapping armour plates. It’s always been my fear that with such a huge expanse of armour on the Gargant, there will not be enough detail/depth for it to be believable. As a current Stompa owner I can see that is already the case at Stompa scale, let alone Gargant scale!

More head work done:

This is a bit off putting, lots of bolts added to the top of the head making a crown effect before the armour paneling is added. I’ve added more hex bolt heads all over the model but this pic shows the greatest concentration of them.

Lots more bits arrived from all over the world so solid progress soon!

23” tall (the same height as a Warlord Titan).

More engine/deck work completed with bits added from FOXBOX and 3 out of 4 exhausts finished off:

My first game with Terror-Watt is in 10 weeks. I hope to have the build phase completed by then (minus the rivits) after the rivits I will the priming... this will be a multi primer project and I suspect the self etching grey car primer will have a significant roll to play
Illumini wrote:Cool build, and love the little background blurb.

Thank you very much, I LOVED writing up the backstory/fluff piece as well. I’m aiming to incorporate the gantry and blast door (from the story) into the bottom rear of the reactor/engine on the Gargant. “God is in the detail!”

1. Distressed the final void shield array
2. Made a final detail for the side of the head (now I can complete the head armour FINALLY!!)
3. Re-made the left arm mount and fixed a newly arrived toy that fires a dart very slowly via a crank handle on the body side of the arm of Terror-watt. I’m going to remake it into 6-8 barrels for more chunkyness/closer to original art.

I’m super stoked with the pose too, it’s very much like the original 80’s art (it really helps to have a good plan)!

Side project progress: Stompa squad!

This is the first of 3x eBay rescue Stompas and I’m going to make a Kustom Zappa for the incomplete arm on Tuesday night, more pics to come!

Thanks and honestly the size is quite daunting but... it makes working on a Stompa seem like a walk in the park!

I have been working on the back of the head again and fitting the awesome bits from FOXBOX (one of my favourite Ork bits suppliers) for added detail:

The next step is more armour plating around the ear and working on detailed armour around the right ‘ear’.

More progress today, finishing the back of the head to a more satisfactory state:

And then moving around the head to the left eye with armour plating:

This was a lot of fun and the extra detail really pays off here, I’m deliberately adding a lot of detail to the head as it’s a main focal point of the model.

2.5 hours work on The right side of his head today:

This are need a good amount more detail, but I won’t do more detail and piping until I finish all the major armour plating groups on the head!

I estimate I have another 7-8 hours/3 days to spend on the head before I complete the head!!

All head armour plating completed!!

And I’ve started on the head detailing plus piping... more pics to come.

I have also been working on the Zappa template for the 3 members of the Mek Stompa squad:

I love the shape!! This was my first time creating a 3D weapon from scratch and I’m delighted with how it turned out! This base will be added to the other 2 as they get nearer to completion.

Thanks, it’s amazing how little progress I’m making despite all the time I have. I just can’t compromise on the quality at all!!

A lot more detailing done around the shoulders with piping and base plating done, the best single pic is of the front of the left shoulder pad:

The next step is to finish the back of the shoulder pad and the do a heap of large checkers (black and white of course) on the outer shoulder pad!

That's quite a project, and you seem to be making great progress with it! It looks like you can really match the GW parts with your scratch-built ones and that's really impressive, especially in models this large.

This is an awe-inspiring project mate! I thought it was looking good when it was just buckets and plumbing fittings but the amount of detail you're putting in is mind-blowing and the results are incredible.

Love the art inspiration - the pose is definitely a winner. That's something that always bothered me about the stompa models with their crazy maxi skirts and shuffling feet. This is dynamic and super orky. Excited to see what comes next!

Thank you very much for your very kind words, it’s just a matter of time And good materials with the detail. And I have a good bit of extra time ATM.

Thanks For following the progress for so long and for the appreciation! ‘God is in the detail!’

A good bit of concept art helps soooo much and I love dynamically posing ANY model a make, it gives a real sense of movement and STOMPYNESS!

Some good checker progress on both outer shoulder pads (Gaz the Grot in frame for scale) with the left shoulder nearing completion!

Differential Symmetry:

These 3 similar ‘teef’ are a combination of many different techniques (which will generally go unnoticed) that I have used all over the build:

Left ‘toof’ is over cut and shows a lot of splash on the face.
Middle ‘toof’ is closely cut and much finer and neater.
Right ‘toof’ is aged and over cut to make it seam ancient or truly recycled. I actually chewed the 2mm placard to mark the face easily!!

This is to give the effect of 3 different Gretchen loot/salvage crews producing items for the Ork Mekboss.

Today I completed the whole left shoulder! Minus a few pipes of course. The aim is to make the left ‘Minigun’ arm look more brutal (lots of sharp teef) and the right ‘Zappa’ arm more Mek/tech like (lots of cog symbols and pipe work):

This turned out soooo much better than I thought it would (due to detail stacking making the trim a lot less flat) and I absoululy love the end result

Thanks, I sure hope the detail helps. I just couldn’t bare it being finished and knowing I didn’t do it justice/properly. I’m truly learning as I go with these materials and having heaps of Orky fun doing it!

More progress today on the Stompa Zappa arm now complete and looking super!

Looking good. Detail definitely helps - and yeah - a project this size - definitely want to do it justice (and I think you are).

Have you thought about how you are going to undercoat this so that the paint sticks to all of that - looks like insulation plastic?

To undercoat it I was going to use grey auto etching spray can primer, it’s sandable and sticks like glue to most things. I’m worried about the silicon components of the model but will do some tests before I buy 10 cans. Hopefully it doesn’t eat the Plascard!!!

Thanks for some truly sound praise, it’s a long, fun and great road with layers and layers of details.

Today I finished off another layer of piping on the right shoulder and other details/piping over the shoulders

And with the shoulders now completed enough at this stage I had a decision to make... my work order!

I did a quick inventory of my remaining parts (during lockdown) and decided on the next stages to complete:

1. Zappa/right arm and piping.
2. Rear engine/body integration with venting, exhausts and ducting.
3. Rotor cannon/left arm and ammo feeds.
4. Gutbuster Cannon completion.
5. Body armour panels till I run out of plascard.

So with no messing around I started cleaning up the Zappa arm ready for tomorrow’s push:

It felt great to start more work on the Zappa again, I love the aesthetic!!

I suppose the good thing about ork builds is that a fair amount of what you're using is everyday household objects. Gives you a few more options while in lockdown for stuff you have access to if you run out of shop-ordered parts.Though I wouldn't advise dismantling the toilet cistern for parts. The rest of the household might object, albeit a worthy sacrifice.

It’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make for them!

As someone here mentioned, Ork builds need layered details to convey the makeshift nature of the Meks!

Great progress point today... I have finished the Zappa!

After the test fit yesterday, I managed to fix and ‘detail’ all the tricky areas and delighted with the result!

With the Zappa finished I move onto the next exciting chapter: Reactor to Hull integration!

I started the skeleton of the hull as a test that will support at the base layer armour, which will in turn support the outer armour layer... it’s a bit tricky but a good method again from the famous English Ork builder: Ian ‘the waz’ Wyatt

It was very Kool to be working on the hull finally, and with very rapid progress!

Im humbled by your kind words, thank you very much.

More reactor detail today and outer vertical skeleton work completed:

The reactor hatch is a prominent part of the ‘fluffy’ writing piece on the first page and was a delight to complete, including the gantry.

For the next few days I’ll be working on the reactor and intergrating it into the hull better, now that the vertical skeleton is completed.

Great minds... The rotor cannon has got a ‘dart’ mechanism in it which puts a huge amount of tension of the chassis of the gun/arm. I’m going to leave it not working atm and focus on getting Terror-Watt completed before going back and making it work.

More progress today, I fixed the multi-multi-multi barreled Rotary Kannon to the arm and detailed it a bit more!

Which means a pose check!

Thanks, when the build was in concept I looked at fully automating it (walking and moving) but I wanted to focus on the modeling. I still hope Terror-Watt crushes my friends armies in our APOC game in about 10 weeks!

More progress today, I tried my hand at making ammo belts (3 times unsuccessfully) and settled for making ammo bins on the hull of the Gargant:

This is great fun with so much test fitting and re-modeling. I rehashed the whole thing twice (at the fatal expense of my kids play blocks) but I’m delighted with the final outcome!

More work today on the base structure of the Rotor Kannon:

This is time consuming stuff! Spacing all the belt feeds, making the housings at the right angles, fixing the ammo housings to the hull and the Rotor Kannon well and remaking anything that doesn’t fit well.

I also added some drum mags and ammo boxes to the outer face of the Rotor Kannon as most of the real estate on the inner face is taken up with ammo feeds. I have allowed for a few ammo casing ejection ports, but not enough to be realistic at all.

I sure hope so, I’m only going to do this once in my time of this beautiful rock!

Very exciting day, after 6 or so days of work... I FINALLY got to test fit all the belt ammo feeds from the hull ammo bins to the Rotor Kannon:

I completed a whole lot of work on the rotor Kannon as well, but it will be 2-3 more days before the rotor Kannon is completed and I can progress to the Gut Busta!

its a Kool comical feature of the Orks and I love adding bespoke details like this, my favourite bit on the ammo feeds is that some of the shells are backwards!

Thanks for the kind words, it’s a pleasure to be measured against some of the Great work in the past.

More work today on the Rotor Kannon body:

This was a great step in integrating all the ammo feeds and exhaust ports with all ‘‘the bits between’! I covered most of the ugly screw heads that were nessary during the build. It all made me realise that I’m not quite as advanced in the rotor Kannon build as I wanted to be by this point, but I’m keeping my standards up, which I’m assured will pay off!!

Tomorrow I’m riveting it all up before I add the final/top layer of pipes and cogs

I just couldn’t help myself... the Rotor Kannon NEEDED a gantry!!

I’m calling the chassis of the Rotor Kannon done! Tomorrow I’ll detail up the barrel portion of it!

A major decision was made today, I’m going to have to fix the Rotor Kannon to the hull. There are soooo many ammo feeds and they will be a nightmare to magnetise! This will add a lot more rigidity to the Rotor Kannon (which is great for the longevity of the model) but makes it a right royal pain to transport and store.

Today I finished the Rotor Kannon completely:

I’m delighted with the final details and I’m still sick of rivits!

I went to fix the Rotor Kannon arm to the hull, but realised that the fixed arm will make finishing the ammo bins and layering the armour very tricky, so I decided to finish the ammo bins first. This means I have to complete the ammo bins and the skeleton underlayer... and then the base layer of the armour, before I can move onto the Gutbuster!

2 steps forward, 1 step back! This is all work that I have to do, so I am making progress... just not quite to plan! I finished the work on the ammo bins on the hull with yet more armour plates, cogs and rivits:

This will mean that tomorrow I should finish the skeleton layer and start in the base layer armour around the bins.

Sanity is highly overrated, but that is good advice! It’s great working on it daily, helps with the momentum...

More work today, I finished the ammo boxes for the Rotor Kannon with some carving (using a V tool) and more rivits!

I hope to use this technique on the larger plasticard Outer armour panels. I completed the skeleton around the ammo boxes, which means tomorrow I put a base layer of armour around them!

I finally finished the base layer of hull armour around the ammo boxes/feeds for the Rotor Kannon:

Which meant I could finally attach the Rotor Kannon arm and all the ammo belts:

This was a very tricky process and took ages! I bent and had to remake 2 ammo belts and had to finish off all the ‘bullets’, my favourite but was making the inertia fuses for the ‘big’ bullets.

I then had to do a pose check:

I’m not sure of the balance between the right and left arms... the Rotor Kannon arm looks significantly more bulky than the Zappa arm, and I don’t know how to fix it?!

More rapid work today on the skeleton support layer for the Base layer of armour:

I only planned to work around the gutbuster... but got carried away and finished it all! I’m stoked as it really starts to show the final shape of the Gargant and shows that huge belly!

I think they work size wise. The Cannon seems further from the body, so perhaps having the Zappa out to the side a bit more? Kinda like it’s raising the arm to help balance? It’s also Orky, so add a big rokkit or sum more dakka?

Great thinking, I’ll have to wait to finish the model a lot more before I re-jog the pose at all though.

Today I was able to nearly complete the base armour layer around the Gitbuster! Then I got horribly distracted and started work on the actual Gutbuster (my favourite Ork weapon EVER! I particularly liked the rules for it in Epic/6mm 40k):

More solid work today on the Gutbuster:

Finally completed all the base armour layer around the Gutbuster and started work on detailing (some rivits) the Gutbuster. I also put the ‘round’ into the breach (with inertia fuse)!! I will have to work out what caliber it is (44mm diameter)!

After a lot of research I think the best way of bending (both ways in some cases) the 2mm plasticard is with boiling hot water from a jug! This is risky but has the best results (Most controllable). I will have to set up a bath to take the big panels of our layer armour.

Gutbuster 45mm (IRL) bore diamater = 970.71 caliber projectile!

More gutbuster detailing today, with the base/under layer of armour getting the finishing touches (grot for scale)

Next step is sorting out all the dampeners on the Gutbuster and Completing the base detail layer on the Gutbuster, to then add the top layer of detail.

Today was a planning day oh how I was going to detail the bulk of the model, the hull.

I have been thinking of this since the start and it as glorious to have everything come together so well! I discovered a gap under the Zappa arm that needed immediate attention and in an effort to balance the pose out I added 3 offset armoured capacitors under the Zappa shoulder:

Tomorrow I’ll have to put a base layer of armour around them and they will have to be finished after all the armour is all on.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
In other exciting news... I have just successfully bent 2mm Plasticard with boiling water and using the flat side of a Steel pot as a template. This is a great step in being able to shape the chunky armoured plates of the outer hull!

Progress today on finishing the interior armour panels around the 3 new capacitors, and a monumental moment... fixing the first hull panel (top left).

Unfortunately I also discovered a large portion of the interior hull armour that had no detail (completely unacceptable) and discovered all the zappas in my hull bits box that I will need to place and then mount somehow on the hull!!

“Two steps forward...”

Looking spectacular ThorNZ2020. The corrugated armour panels look very Orky. Will the cogs be left uncovered in places or just be visible through little gaps in the panels? I do think the grot needs to be a permanent fixture on the gutbuster

Thanks, I will be covering most of the cogs, but always wanted a strong clockwork theme to the model.

More great progress today fixing up the mistakes I found last time:

I then went and destressed 2 main armoured plates and fixed and started to detail them both.

More outer armoured goodness today with the ever watchful grot supervisor watching like a hawk!

I’m starting the armoured overlapping panels from the bottom rear and working my way forward and will finish with the top middle ‘moobs’. This will give the effect of layered scale armour that would be weatherproof as well.

This layered armour has the added benefit of each successive layer hiding most of the screw heads that fixed the last layer!

I’m making each panel as individual as possible but I’m running out of ideas! The last thing I want is a repeating pattern on the outer hull!!

More under-arm work on the Zappa hull:

I’m loving the armour panel diversity that will only be accentuated with the painting!

More solid work all over Tera-Watt today, with more armour plating done (I’m sick of saying that) and various Kool little details slathered all over:

This was a monumental day. I told myself I would wait to near completion to ‘Edit’ ONLY one portion of the Gargant in accordance with my ‘design eye’!

That luck piece is not the feet, but the Jaw! It’s far to square and clashes with the rest of the round model, the proposed rounded jaw will let more models/crew stand of the Jaw deck and work the ‘cigar’ gun.

Tomorrow I’ll be taking The jaw off and remodelling it completely to be more in line with the original art... a Terrible de-jawing of sorts!

I’m going to leave the feet Just as they are (still waiting for special parts from Russia) but I’ll just distress them heavily with an electric dremal to fit the rest of the well traveled/battle-worn aesthetic.

I checked with the engineer and the weighted steel ring base has been ordered and should be ready in the next few weeks (on time).

Thank you for the very kind words, it’s going to be great to complete the build soon!! But then I’ll be onto the painting...

Today I de-jawed Tera-wat and templated a new jaw (which will look a lot better) and scavenged bits from the old one and supplemented it with new bit I ordered ages ago!

More good work around the main ‘moob’ chest panels that will complete the main hull armour:

Huge progress today!

After taking the Jaw off completely I was able to finish all the out layers or armour and the base shape and base armour of the Moobs!!! It has only been 2 months!!

And with that completed I made Jaw 2.0, managing to fit in 2 more big Teef!!

Jaw 2.0 sits a bit higher (which shows of the belly better) and has more room for the ‘cigar’ gun and its crew. The pic doesn’t show it but the less square nature of Jaw 2.0 looks sooooo much better! Tomorrow I’m going to work on fixing of the jaw and the jaw decking.

Astonishing work. I love the idea of a cigar kannon. Comedy genius.

. I can imagine there's some weight in the piece by this stage. You're going to need an engine hoist to get it out of the shed. Just check the legs on any tabletop he's going to appear on. No flimsy WWE tables. Though the idea of Tera-Wat destroying an entire army by putting them through the table is appealing in a kinda orky way.

Thanks but I’m about 4-5 weeks worth of work away from basecoats! Cigar Kannon as per original B&W art so colours are entirely up to me

He is fairly portable still but the extra screws in the single ankle are proving their worth!

The main components of Jaw 2.0 is finished with the Cigar Kannon I place:

I’ll detail it up tomorrow and then onto the hull armour plate details!

I’m also starting upgunning Tera-Watt with a good scattering of Kustom Mega Blastas and hopefully some weird and wonderful weapons tomorrow

After some more reflection I realised that the armour thickness of the moobs was very underwhelming:

After a quick mastectomy added depth was achieved after some experimentation but I’ll need to fill and then detail the extra depth.

Thanks very much, I recon only 4-5 weeks left in the build!

Work on Moob and Eye 2.0 carries on:

I’m stoked with the results of both (Love the extra girth of the new Moob) and tomorrow I’ll work on the other Moob to bring it up to speed

New improved Moobs on!

I’m delighted with the extra girth I added to the moobs and the extra balance/fat man look it’s achieved! A job well done, the fight was long but well worth it!

Tomorrow I plan finish both eyes entirely!

Thanks, it’s a lot of work but very rewarding! I firmly believe in “do it once, do it right” there will be a time (very soon) when I’m just going to have to call it done!

Today I went to work on the eyes, but got terribly sidetracked and worked on ALL the unfinished hull plates!

I finished the turret under the rotor Kannon and the armour panels:

I detailed the rear of the model with rivits and bolt heads to add more of a feeling of bulk:

And finished the turret and hull armour under the Zappa:

A big day for sure but sooooo many things completed, just not the eyes!

I surmise the paint job will take some time...

Really though, I can't wait to see this painted up.
Been keeping an eye on it for the last few weeks and I sort of didn't expect you to plan on putting some color into it. Relieved to hear otherwise.
Such an interesting piece.

I'm one of the aforementioned gaming group guys who this was kept secret from for so long, and just recently has ThorNZ shown me his project! Absolutely amazed at the piece, and the fact he managed to keep it all under wraps! Still a big secret from the rest of the group, but he's getting me in to help with the final touches and painting, both of which I really look forward to! Can't wait to put this on the table for our big Apoc game! Will be a pleasure to die to

Mate, it was soooo good to FINALLY tell someone about this wee project! I’m really looking forward to paint basing him with ya!

Yesterday was rivits (so no photos!) BUT today was lots of small finishing touches! Final steps in completing the front right eye, now with offset heat shield:

And teef vent covert, pipework and finishing armour plate finishing:

I love this pipework as it reflects the original art so well:

Tomorrow I’m working on hull lights and sensor suites!

Lots of work today adding many lights and sensor suites all over, and yet more rivits:

I still find it astounding to put so much effort and time into this and still feel like I have made no progress at all!

Tomorrow it’s more rivits and onto re-detailing the feet

Thanks very much! The build is getting very close (relatively) to being finished!

More work today on the underside and left foot:

While there are lots of rivits, a good portion of them will be covered in dirt...

I’m loving going back to the very first portion of the build (the underside) and applying my developed skills to all the parts and making them look soooo much better, very gratifying!

Im playing an APOC game in 3-4 weeks to celebrate the end of 8th... so a bit of both maybe!?

Over the last 2 days I completed the rivets/details on 1 foot and today started on the other one:

Once completed I’ll detail the underside and then take a borrowed electric dreamily to it all for more distressing...

More solid work today on the Right/mid-step foot:

In other interesting news... the silicon and rubberised bits got back from the spray booth!

The Tamiya Fine Grey self etching primer WORKS!! The fine dusting (after sanding) holds the black undercoat well!

And the end of the build phase is in sight!!!!!

This means I only have 1 week to complete the build!

Finished the mid-step right foot today:

More good rivet work (no pics sorry) and lots of last minute prep work today for base coat spray painting tomorrow. Tomorrow I’m writing a quick to do list before we base spray the whole module tomorrow afternoon (if it’s warm enough)! Tomorrow’s to do list so far:

1. Planning meeting
2. Finish gunnels and gantries
3. Finish distressing right foot with dremil.
4. Clean up the feet and bottom.
5. Final check and last second detailing.
6. Prep silicon and rubber surfaces by sanding them.
7. Brush model off.
8. Vacuum model.
9. Very final check.
10. BASE SPRAY PAINT!

More progress, Terror-Watts back and engine all base coloured:

It’s amazing how many bits you miss on a model this size, even on the 3ed time!

As a base colour record (mostly for myself):

These colours will make up a majority of the visible armour layers

There were a lot of missed bits, but they have a grey base so not a hard fix! It’s great to see the enormity of my progress... but base colour blocking is no fun at all!

Terror-Watt is slowly becoming less and less shining silver:

I’m 1/2 way through the gun metal after finishing the tinbits base colouring today!

Thanks! I am brushing the metallic colour blocks to maintain edge details and after finishing the ‘Tin-Bits’ I also completed the ‘Boltgun Metal‘ and now I’m 1/2 way through the ‘Chainmail’:

This is having a great effect and breaking up all the major armour panels, I’m not completely 100% happy with the head, but near enough.

After I have washed all the metals I’ll then move onto all the actual colours (Browns, Reds, Oranges, yellows....)

An important part of the Model arrived today (much thanks for all the hard work of an engineer friend)... the base:

Milled/Lathed mild steel (for strength and weight/counterbalance) measures 320mm Dai and will add yet more stability to the model.

Thanks, the milled steel base is only 2x as heavy as the plywood one so Terror-Watt should have a sound plinth!

More work today with the ‘chainmail’ which is quite tedious... I finished the Zappa, Gutbuster and got 1/2 way through the Rota Kannon before I had to stop and do something more fun! That ended up being the copper on the Zappa:

This turned out SUPER! I love the effect even without washes!

Solid work today on finishing the metalics on the feet, underside and Rotor Kannon:

Tomorrow I’ll be assaulting the engine with various metalics! The only metalic that I haven’t got yet is brass, I’ll be adding this on just before I start the washes.

The final base arrived from the engineer (thanks for all your wonderful help!!) all welded and shined up and ready for some self etching spray:

(Falcon/base decoration shown for scale) Once I have finished the metalics I’ll start prepping the base!

I had to go back and check your drawing to realise that the ring is thinner on the inside by about 10mm. It looks a bit like a filleted curve or is it chamfered? Was there a particular reason for that or did you just want to give your friend a challenge?

Thanks, that’s high praise indeed!

Finished the metalic drybrushing today in a big push:

Sorry for the crappy light

This gives a much better feel

And now with that portion completed, tomorrow I’ll start adding the base layers of colour to the main panels!

I was more excited to see this enter the painting phase than any other post on Dakka.

I'm very pleased to see you've gotten there and will continue to keep tabs on the progress.

Thank you very much, high praise indeed! I can’t wait till the painting is over so I can start building the rest of the neglected Ork army

Thanks, it’s mostly due to a covid enforced break and a series of rolling holidays

More progress on ‘seam welding’ the outer shoulder pad Ork Powa Field arrays to the checked pads, they were sitting to proud for my liking:

This and a coloured paint audit revealed a few significant holes in the paint pallet

Rapid progress here ThorNZ2020! If you’re missing paints, it’s Orky, so surely you can put another colour on? That said, something that big would probably take all of my paints to cover!

Oh and can you imagine the size of the welder to make a fillet weld that size?!?

Thanks, I’ll just make do! The welder would be massive!

If you say it everyday it gets you in the right mindset!

Today I pushed and started the Chequers and experimented with colours over base layers:

This means my reds go better over white with only ‘2 thin coats‘ over the base for a good result!

In 2 weeks time I should have it pictured facing off against a warhound titan

The Chequers are about 10mm square... and I hope so!

Today I was playing with more colour combos for the colour blocking of the armoured panels:

I want Terror-Watt to look red and blue (Evil Sunz and Deffskullz) so I’m doing one area in ‘reds’

I hate this part of a paint where you just mindlessly applying paints (sometimes up to 3 coats) before you get onto the fun weathering, rusts, washes and stains

The coloured panels are really bringing out the wonderful texture work you've done around the edge of each panel.

Thanks, but there will eventually be one more layer of wash/grime over it all, so in the end there should hopefully be even more texture!

More good work today solid blocking the coloured armour panels:

I would love to get all the coloured armour panels completed before the APOC game in 13 Days.... the countdown has begun!

Thanks, it’s great to get more and more colours on!

ONLY 12 days to go!

More solid work on colour blocking, I have the technique sorted now so I can do 12-14 panels a session ATM:

Love the bright colour but it’s a bit bold ATM, it will die down a bit after another wash and then grime and rust!

Thanks, after doing a few test pallets the blue did not work, to far away from the red in the colour wheel... but purple was a lot closer!!!

More work over the last 2 days to base colour the front of Terror-Watt:

Some colours need another coat to flatten the pigment pooling, but I’m very happy with the result.

The main coloured panels were all done with a brush and NOT an airbrush! Due to the many colours the masking required for an airbrush would have taken twice as long!!

More solid work today finishing the right side:

With arm on:

I also completed the Chequers on the front hull.

At this rate I’ll get the feet coloured up before the APOC game on Friday night!

Thanks, it’s all coming together well. I won’t be washing before the game, I need more colour and textures first!

More solid work today on the Left hand side hull panels:

This worked out well with a good colour balance, which means a full frontal:

I love the Chequers! Tomorrow I’ll be working on the coloured panels on the feet.

Thanks, I’m counting on it!

Today is a big day in the life of Terror-Watt... all the main coloured panels are completed! These pics are all pre grime, dirt, weathering and rust so look a bit bright. Other models included for scale:

I love the view from the top as it reveals a lot of otherwise hidden work

I’ll post some in a few days along with a kill count and narrative!

Decoy completed:

This is 30 mins of work to set up tonight on the APOC board ready for the big battle tomorrow... inst it horrendous! The keen of you may notice the base is the same plywood one I used from Day 1 of the build!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Decoy deployed in front of some much better painted and much more fearsome opposition:

Wow... APOC games are amazing but draining! Terror-Watts first outing was met with much swearing and astonishment. The APOC game lasted 1 night and most of the next day and Terror-Watt survived all 6 turns and even mildly tolerated some last turn ‘friendly’ fire to end the game on 28 wounds left! He killed 2 Warhound titans and a long list of other big units (necrons with quantum shielding are silly).

Some lessons on Warlord Titan usage:
1. Always sit down when you can, APOC games are long
2. A Quake Cannon will reliably one shot a Warhound Titan Even if you have rubbish dice!
3. All the little guns add to the massive damage, never underestimate them
4. A CCweapon on a Warlord is a bit wasted (generally the feet are good enough) Bring more Macro guns
5. Plasma Annihilators are amazing!
6. Always sit down when you can, APOC games are long (It’s so important it’s worth mentioning twice)

I’ll dial back the effort now and hook back into the painting in a month or so and hopefully complete the painting by Christmas/next APOC game

Thanks, he sure did dominate the landscape down one end of the table. The APOC game was 30,000 points and was finished in 6 hours with a full 6 turns of play using 8th Edition 40k rules. The reason why it went sooo fast was We used nothing smaller than a Leman Russ Tank, and had 10min timed phases

Viterbi wrote:Good to hear that he did well. Looks like it was a fun game despite the time needed
