DUST KURGAN project - Red allert 2 inspiered.

The plastics used for troops is a bit softish and able to bend. Bend not as much as Bones
Great for durability and poor for mainaining a shape.
Most of the troop weapons are warped. Warped not as much as Bones

Luckly I found old weapons, do not recall where from, to replace some of the warped guns.
But was also disapointed to find the plastic (alternative) guns exeptionaly poorly molded. ( now I wish I knew where I got them from to stress how pisspoor the molds are)

1 - Heavy gun on this trooper was not warped or bent, keeping it as is.
2 - Drummed machine gun as a replacment for the heavy gun that was warped
3 - Not only most of the grip and trigger had to be rmoved but also a bit of the stock to actually fit.

Paint job quick and dirty.

Using the primed base that the models come with, applying mostly Intensity inks and washes on top of that base to create variation in materials.
I could not do much with the mold line on the drum. sadface

Red Army Commissar Squad
Just finished the squad.

Sergeant's gun still a bit bent, but not too bad.
Damn, those guns look so bad up close

Comisar squad

Heads on micro drills.
Had to chop of the rocket launcher to get painting access.
Interestingly enough there was a pin in the wrist, made reattaching much easier.

Steel Guard - Sniper squad.

I noticed that the guns are with a scope...
But the pilot cant look through it....
Something had to be converted about it!

Not the most advanced optic conversion, but its the Soviets! War time, supplies are short, new prototyphes are raw and untested, there is no time to finetune when the enemy is at the gates, weld it on and charge!

Initial base pour (Craft sand + ModPodge + Acrylic paint + small pieces of randomness)

The larger base allowed me to fill it with additional details that normally would not fit on a smaller base.

Secrete weapon 1 - steel whool rust + mod podge
Pefrect color and texture, however a bit rough on the brush. (MASK is a must, rust is very powedery when dry)

Secrete weapon 2 - Dry thisle+ mod podge
Roll each seed with glue between the fingers to create a "solid" tip that will be much easier to glue to base later.

Secrete weapon 3 - Old roots + leafs
Pieces of roots for trees and details, and leafs with (leaf punch) for foilage.

Thanks!

Wasn't it some sort of problem with manufacturer that failed to deliver the order a while back and the Dust team was in a bad spot? I was thinking that they are done for, but good to see them recovered.
Dust should of been much more spread than it is now, probably would be if not for that set back.

Bent weapons, it depends, if in FF or dust box should be fine, if in some other box then who knows how it was packaged, if in a bag from ebay then depends.
Not a problem because I enjoy converting things anyways, so it was more for fun than from necessity

Before i got into DUST apparently there was a KS fiasco and people are still mad about it. really sad to since the game is really well written(the design team really seems to care about the game/balance) and fun to play, in fact it is much more enjoyable than current 40K .

I have a mix of the old FF and the new inhouse stuff and i find that overall the quality is good. so far all i have are items from the ready to play primed edition.

i am still trying to find gregor and izzy as well as tom for characters in premium, i am hoping they end up in a hero box. right now gregor/izzy is only available in the british command squad box set. which is kind of a head scratcher since he is a marine and they are brits.

Steel guards are cool, i ended up getting a second anti-tank squad when i ordered my tesla squad, they seem to be hard to find or were.

I don't know much about the fiasco other than that they got screwed and future looked bleak. Yes, not only game is well written and designed, but the art is amazing and vehicle designs are strong! Especially for me who loves the vehicle designs of C&C series (redalert and Tib) In fact I got into to dust because of vehicle designs!
Most of my stuff is OLD, got the bulk probably 5-6 years ago. Recently ebay impulsed some troops (with bend weapons) and that steel guard assult squad with that huge ammo belt that I always wanted.

It is as if they have different manufacturers with different contracts to make sense of area excusive nature for some of the sets.
Hopefully in a few years they will iron out the production and distribution for the new stuff and standardize everything.

But I love that fact that you can Dustify things. And I will resume my old unfinished conversion of Russian t-26 tank kits.

Well my dust stuff isn't near as detailed as yours, i never did anything with the bases, i was just happy to get around to getting some paint on them.

i posted pictures in this threat.

https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/787510.page

My SSU is sitting at 150 points, our group normally plays at that level on a 4X6, the allies and axis i have a bit more so i can swap out some units.

AXIS is my main force because yes the vehicles rock. the ho 229 flying wing fighter they based all the aircraft off of had me sold, i don't have the 2 new variants though.

I am hooping i can get one of the regulars at the FLGS to dive into the new japanese faction. otherwise i just use my stuff to play with regulars or demo and teach new players. already have a couple takers.

P.S.

Are you familiar with battle tactics the simple d6 skirmish WWII system put out by forces of valor(the toy company)? it has a total of 6 pages of rules designed for their 1/32 and 1/72 scale toys. it is a fun system and their toys are super detailed and high quality (and expensive)

here are some of my 1/32 FOV axis toys

I also have a panzer IVH, stugg III G, swimmer wagon, and kubel wagon not pictured to go along with that.

That is a hefty SSU force!
I am not familiar with battle tactics.
Eventhough i like building, coverting, painting, and the lore, never had the time to actually play. My track record is one game of 40K with a friend, and 2 games of Age of Sigmar in total lolz. At some point i'll have to make me way to local store and find a Dust group.

Its cool when you can actually use 1/35 in a game, othwerwise they just sit on a shelf.
That anti air tank is so cool, cant remember the name of it.

When I get to my AXIS they will be DUNE (Bene Tleilax) themed for sure!

ps:
Dang!
I have not seen so many combat engineer walkers gathered together. Do they heal/repair each other?

I think the only SteelGuard that I am missing is the anti infantry squad.

The AA tank is a quad 20mm autocannon on a panzer IV hull called a whirblewind. the germans had variants on trucks and flat tracked chassis, they eventually increased the gun to a 37mm on the ostwind since the 20mm didn't have the range to engage anything that wasn't doing ground attack...but it worked really well against russian infantry hordes.

I got a deal on the engineer walkers, miniature market was selling them for like $9 each since they were the old FF ones. and at 7 points a pop in game you can field a bunch.....and yes they can repair each other, themselves and the steel guards...and they are fast for class 4 walkers with a walk of 12" instead of 8" of course they have no backup MG to deal with air and their longest gun is the howitzer at 24" ....almost forgot they are damage resilient to boot.

the anti-infantry squads are sick in game. super short range...but double template shots from each against all infantry and armor classes, plus it is fire so you never get a cover or armor save.

the DUST war journals page has a PDF for all the cards if you don't have them already, and the parent site has the cards posted with all the new release pictures. they gave the pelican fighters for the allies a twin phaser cannon....i was waiting for the larger P61 black widow version, but a quick mod of the pelican(P-38) gives me phasers in the air.

P.S. do you recognize the markings on the BF109? it belongs to a famous pilot.

One is for anti-tank the other is good at shooting down planes or killing infantry(gatling cannons)

The BF109 is painted as Eric Hartmans distinctive plane. he was the top air combat ace in the luftwaffe(and in history generally), never shot down with 352 air combat kills.

I remember watching a historian on luftwaffe, he did not mentioned Eric Hartman, but talked about the dificulties in calculating accurate casualties numbers from VVS and Luftwaffe.
USSR did not do well against luftwaffe at all, do too almost no prior pilot training, especially in early parts of the war. Things got a bit better for VVS towards 45, but still luftwaffe prooved to be very strong.
That is cool you got a bit of history behind the model!

And that is NOT a LasCannon, it is a Chem spray nozzle, attached to random bit, from some lego-ish set I think.

Bend rifle fix attempt with heat worked for a time, but after a while did not hold the shape.
Gluing a papeclip metal piece as a guide\support worked. It was either that or converting a different weapon or a barrel.

This model is so POORLY made, the model is bulky, there are large gaps between the parts, the heads stickout like matchheads, and most deceptive thing is the gunner!

Can't tell from the box art, but he is just holding his arms out, and the gun has no controls, no fire button, to grips. I do not even know how to begin to convert this.

It feels like a cheep polyethylene toy.

Unfortunately, I saw the gunner only after painting. Will have to get a bit clever.

1 Drill holes in hands

2 Find bits

3 Drill holes in bit

4 Feed floral wire through the holes

5 Straiten paperclip and strip the rubber jacket off

6 Drop of TrueBlood over white for the screen

7 Wrap exposed floral wire in small pieces of paperclip rubber jacket

8 Now the guy has something to hold on to

Looks like one got past quality control. almost everything i have is really good quality. every now and then you find one that's a head scratcher. one of my heavy grenadiers has his belt satchels attached to his arm. and it is on there so good i didn't take it off because i though i might break the arm.

Looking forward to the repair walker.

Yep vehicles and walkers are awesome!

I don't know man, because my collection comes from all over and I do not know how old the models are. The weapon teams might be old boxes because I got em years ago from ebay.
The SteelGuard models, walkers and vehicles however are near flawless, and recent boxes do not have the problems, so perhaps that is the reason for poor quality in some.

So every time I point out a problem with sculpting or casting I always keep in mind and try to communicate that perhaps it is an earlier cast.
With that said, the troops for SSU are not as cool as vehicles for sure, and the red lighting weapon team gun is not well designed.

But this is the thing - I only noticed the problem with RedLighting when I took everything off the base and tried to pose them back, before that the overall look of the heavy weapons team looked good to me.

With painting and terrain challenge out of the way, finally finished this dude!
The arm turned out over the top, and a bit cartoony.

Still, both of them look good together!
Different painting styles.
The one with converted arm was hairspray/chipped, the default one was just painted with home-brew rust paste.

What ya talking about! You still got to step up your game!

What do you think of doing a simple black/brown wash over primed models, and just decorate the base, no painting experience needed, just a bit of time.?!

So you are already stepped up then!
I like the way dust made their bases. Kinda feel bad for covering them up to be honest.
I figured for the SSU I will have earth base theme.
For the Allies different environment, more metal and concrete, and leave the Dust base texture as is, but brush some metal into it.
And for the Axis something different, like lice or surface of the moon

But also that everything could be reattached very easily after painting.

Few weeks ago MY NEW LENS CAME IN! (50mm) with new batteries and sd-cards to update me old 6.3 megapixl canon rebel 6041, because 10year old batteries finally crapped out Woop! ! !
and camera broke,........$50 later the repair shop said sub mirror broke and they don't make parts for this ancient camera anymore.
went online, found same camera for $40, used, and just got it today.
MY NEW LENS CAME IN! and new/old camera! .... woop!

With 0.5 experience points in photography, still having fun playing with a new lens!
The main difference that I can see is old standard zoom 18-55mm keeps more depth in focus than the new 50mm.

Wanted to share a small tip.

I love using Thistle Seed for terrain. Denting small cavern for glue to sit in, helps with whole thing to stay upright by it self while the glue dries. Removing the actual seed is necessary because it will break off on its own anyways, and when it does the tiny hairs lose the coherency and fall apart. Ether bead of glue and roll the pinched end between fingers with the glue until dry, or very carefully break off the seed while holding the hairs together and glue it in place.

Progress on BR 47 tracked artillery - The vehicle it self is awesome, I love the way it looks. The crew however is not, really hope it is from the older moldings. Firstly, the box art show 3 crew men, there are actually 4. Same match stick heads problems, generic poses, the "loader" or "operator" in picture is again positioned so he looks like he is doing something, but from different angle just holdings his fists out in frustration at cruel universe that made him that way. None of the crews could actually be seated at this cool vehicle to drive it, might be interesting heavy conversion for future. Overall I am happy.

Progress on the MIL MI-48 Carrier - Detached all that was easily detached. Super cool that you can remove the pilot! Awesome little unit.

Great work on the Medvedi. Your basing adds a lot of character, like them better than the boxart. Each one a little microdiorama.

Honestly, the pics taken with the 18-55mm look better in my humble opinion. I'd say both focus and contrast are superior.

The BR 47 also has the junkyard vibe I know from old sovjet equiptment. Sue, it's still working?

Yes basing adds alot indeed, in fact it saves me when model is poorly molded or paint job is sloppy.

18-55 more in focus yes, however! 50mm has aperture of 1.8, i looked it up and that means the lens it self inside opens up way more and lets more light in and you could take crisper shots in less light, and that is awesome because taking a none blurry picture is hard with my ancient camera. The problem is the zoom lenses with aperture of 1.8 and better are waaaaay over me budget. The 50mm was only $150; and it just not meant for miniature photography, I just hoped it would work because macro lenses are expensive. At least the 50mm I could still use for normal pictures.

BR 47 yes, it is like Zil but smaller and tracked, lolz it would be more of a Olga, it's still working my tovarich?

Holly snaps air vehicles are much easier to paint than the ground troops.
Dry brush light gray over default primer, then series of washes of various consistencies, some metal work with inking and done.

Even-though I have said that I love vehicles from DUST, that is only true in reference the ones on the ground!
Never liked flyers, because they looked too loony/cartonny, especially the SSU chopas.
With that said, Really happy with the way this model cameout, and I am open to embrace DUST flyers as long as the design don't stray too far from RedAlert2 direction.

Red goggles for the welder who somehow found his way into the cockpit and took off to his own peril or promotion whichever comes first.

Last outside pictures give best true colors!
Perfect day to do some miniature photography, with California in flames gives off that nice ambient warm light that can only be achieved by miles of (deathworld) smoke in all directions.

Yes it is the MIL MI-48 walker transport helicopter
I already did it its that red one, I just have not painted the weapons you suppose to put on her and because of the fancy bases, and my inability to figure out a clever way to secure flying model to the base with terrain pieces I decided to build them apart. As if walker was already dropped off.

The issue with mounting was the plastic pegs on that clear support snapped off rather easily, must be old plastic. I decision was made to flip the clear plastic support and have a different attachment point for the chopper. Right now, support fits into the MI-48 via a slot that suppose to be for the KV-47walker.

Had this KV-2 from - MENG World War Toons
And wanted to put it together and see how it scales next to the SSU! And the scale is perfect for the SSU version of the "FT-17"

The kit is super simple, ez to put together, pieces snap fit and it is cartoony but not Too-cartoony, and imho fits perfectly into the dust style vehicles.
Could be a custom Dust card unit.

Because I do not have other cartoony tanks from MENG, will add this one to the SSU list

As you can tell not only do i have a smallish SSU force, another regular player has a huge SSU force. with tanks, helicopters, steel guard and support weapons.

I really liked the look of the Fallschirmjäger, but i had no desire or time to paint the cool flecktarn cammo they have on the premiums.

They have pretty cool rules, as well as all my other forces use nothing but heavy infantry(aside from character pilots) so i could use the variety.

Now i am off to finish flocking my epic 40K stuff, the FLGS finally got in some more fine grade flock.

Progress:
Crates - Balsa wood and pieces of sprue

Truck - Testing out different crew positions, and I think I will go with something akin to 2 gunners on the truck and 2 on the ground next to it.
Don't know if I should put the two on separate bases, or will glue them shoulder to the truck, or make large base for the truck diorama style

Crew - The dreaded crew. I have successfully put them off until now, and have procrastinated me self into the corner.

Oil wash done, drying.

AT43 - I have these guys from the RedBlock got from a swap meet years ago. And thinking of adding them into the SSU along side with the toon tank.
Option 1 - Add them in, and procrastinate further on the dreaded crew.
Option 2 - Add them not, and put them away into a long box.

So far i have "rolf", the guided missile heavy weapons team is on the way.

the face could use a little more detail work, but overall it is well painted including weathering.

As for cost, you really are not seeing much of a difference compared to GW now. i checked out of curiosity and all primaris solo character kits are $35 which is exactly the same price for premium DUST solo characters that are already assembled and painted.

Also with DUST there isn't the weapon option/wysiwyg situation you run into with 40K so you don't have to worry about needing all the bits from the kits.

As for AT 43, it makes sense they are compatible since they are from the same guy who made DUST, rackam just didn't want a WWII setting for the game so he "scifi'ed it.

This channel does some of the unboxing videos for the premiums as well as some AT43 DUST style card conversions.

Cool, I'll get premium reinforcements next time, and also want to try the kit.
And thank you for sharing the channel, it is not easy to find good Dust video content!

Did not know AT43 made by same guys. In this case it is Option 1 adding them in, and procrastinating the dreaded crew some more Victory!

Progress - ToonTank from Meng is done.
Was not happy with the tracks, have that MCdonaldToy feel to em, but rest of the kit I am happy with, although, the price is just tiny bit too steep for such a simple simple kit imo.

AT-43 are already painted, but I wanted to give them a quick paint pass to blend em into the SSU without changing colors or repainting anything.
1 - Dry brush with orange
2 - White dab and an orange Intensity ink for the scopes
3 - Wash red in (TrueBlood) that dries shiny, and wash the green in green (Intensity ink)
4 - Dry brush light gray over the guns
5 - Wash faces in light brown

Dreaded crew had another surprise for me

I am 99999.99999% sure it was not sculpted this way
BUT
All models fall forward because they all lean IN if left "un-propped"
The 3rd guy can stand by him self, and even he leans in alot.
The 4th guy due to major propping is leaning out, at least the pose makes sense thematically

Putting them on round bases because decided to have them not glued or pegged to the truck but rather come with the truck as stand alone models.

Yes they do, or did.
The official instructions are to drill small holes for the pegs and position the crew with their pegs, so the A stay attached and B can be removed/switch-out if need be.
The best option would of been to drill holes in the track and in the legs and put small magnets, paint over everything, So you get the A and the B perfection.
I could of cut off the pegs and just glued them in, but I though that changing weapons might be a hassle with everything glued in, so decided to cut the pegs and base them individually.

And to fix the problem with (Leaning IN too much) you would of had to drill the holes at a slight angle for them to be strait on the truck. OOOOooor you know what! Mayhaps that .00001% is correct and they are sculpted like that with the design in mind that they should be pegged! If I am wrong then I am happy to admit it.

Closeup for some quality

Came in pieces, arms and legs are ball and socket joints, very pose-able.

Came without bases, nothing some dirt and ModPoge can't fix.

Much more dynamic than the OG Dust walkers

More dynamic but look thinner than the Dust's SSU

Side by side

Side by side

The quality is cheap, the plastic is akin to ReaperBones bendy white.

Oh, you're back! Cool. Fun little mechs and great bases, too.
