1. Update Power Levels
2. New ways to find stuff
3. ????
4. Profit off codex purchases!
Almost:
1. Update Power levels
2. Group stuff by faction hopefully
3. Army builder
4. October - profit off codex cycle
5. Future (I'd guess December or later) - game tracker and Crusade army manager
Nope. Promise to act on customer feedback.
They weasel-worded it, but today's changes were planned changes (ie, stuff they already knew was wrong when they launched), not feedback based. Programming doesn't happen that fast.
Our app development team has been working tirelessly – in fact, they’ve just pushed through loads of planned changes as well as moving some other ones forward based on your contributions
'Moving forward' always gets me as buzzwords. Its almost as good as 'restructuring paradigms.' Though in this case, 'moving some other ones forward' just means that they've reordered the task list and put stuff a lot of people complained about at the top, rather than what they had been working on.
I don't own any 8th edition books other than my own armies so took the plunge figuring $2.50 a month for two months should be long enough for me to go through everything in the game. The app did answer a question I had about whether the Blackstone Fortress units had price increases- they do. If you want any Ur-Ghul in a Drukhari army, however, you should add them in as their Blackstone Fortress datasheet and save one point per model!
Just installed, seems to work on iPadOS 14 beta 3. However this is a frickn iPhone app?! Y not make it universal?
Not paying for forced portrait mode 2x zoomed POS with a terrible keyboard. Introduce a proper iPad version please if you seriously intend to replace digital rulebooks and codexes with this crap.
I'm missing the Books compatible versions already.. no splitscreening to have two separate documents open simultaneously, no bookmarking... what the hell GW! Learn how to use an iPad ffs
So I downloaded it with an open mind. I must be honest the app is terrible and lacks any real features. I can’t seem to get it to load on my iPad so no sharing data with my iPhone. Also, can you share it with your family members In iTunes or do I have to pay for multiple people in the same household?
I think there are a bunch of puzzled people on GW's marketing team right now. They just did what they always do when they screw up - put out some weasel-wordy release about "making things better" that doesn't actually admit they released a terrible product in the first place, then give people a coupon to use with the useless product. Right out of the "Our car explodes and kills you? How about we make it right with a coupon to buy another exploding car?" playbook.
"This always worked a treat in the past, why aren't people slurping it down this time?"

This is not really a fair critique IMHO given such a ridiculous comparison between people dying due to fatal defects in workmanship and you not being able to look up information about your toy soldiers on your phone the way you want to.
I have mentioned this before, but for arguments sake, say you want a copy of the Space Marine codex, the Ultramarine Supplement and the Necron codex and their latest PA rules right now. Your options are: 1) buy physical books ($150 USD), 2) e-pubs ($122), 3) subscribe to app ($5 / month), Pirate (Free, but feel bads about stealing ) or borrow off your mate (you cheap skate ). I don’t know about you, but if all you are interested in is the rules and/or don’t won’t to constantly carry books around to your games, that $5 seems pretty reasonable. Even if I paid for a subscription for a year at a time, $60 seems to be a good deal still. Wait, what you mean there is more? I get another $1000 worth of rules content as well!
Now if you already have all those books and like hefting them around, then I can understand your argument that $5 may be a bit too rich. Of course what else in this hobby is $5 besides a pot of paint.
Please don’t misunderstand this as a ringing endorsement of the product. GW marketed something they haven't delivered on. That said, is the app useable. Yes. Does it offer good value despite its technical issues. Yes. Will I use it in its current form. Yes. Do I feel cheated, absolutely not especially considering I just got access to rules content that I didn’t have for less than 1% of its regular retail price .

Well the thing is $5 a month is $60 a year, and you still need to purchase separately 9th ed codexes to get access to them in the app. Also 3-5 years worth of app (approximate time span of an edition) comes to between $180-$300 (not counting additional codexes) so it is quite a bit more than "just a pot of paint" on the long run.

lot of people already sell of give away their 8th edition books, so physical rules for cheap are not a problem
might be more than the 20 as for the App until October but at least without new/unknown mistakes
Lord of Deeds wrote: Now if you already have all those books and like hefting them around, then I can understand your argument that $5 may be a bit too rich. Of course what else in this hobby is $5 besides a pot of paint.
Yeah, so suppose I get this app. At the end of the month what do I have? Jack squat is what. But with a pot of paint I could have a painted army! Or, much more likely, an unopened pot of paint! But at least in theory I could have painted something. And I still might one day! Really!

I would only add that this isint a terrible product.
Its not really a finished item therefore I personally don't even classify this as a product, it lacks any of the features its supposed to have and even if people subscribe it doesn't recognise they subscribed...
This is GW execs wet dream though. They dont even need to produce any paper and people still gobble it up coz it has a GW product logo on it...
They can just recoup the £10 they paid college interns they paid to do this laughing all the way to the bank.
The way some of you are acting its as if I am spending your money and not my own. Seriously, if you think I am a fool for paying $5 instead of $40 or more, that’s your problem not mine. Don’t let your rush to vilify everything GW lead you to cut your nose off to spite your face.
Went ahead and subscribed. I plan to cancel when the new codex I need gets dropped.
...but now the app doesn’t recognize that I subscribed and everything is still locked.
What a time to be alive!
So one of the bugs (which I have already e-mailed GW about) is at startup the app always loads the subscribe now or use free app options. If you subscribed, try clicking on use free app and you should be taken to the subscriber content. At least thats what worked for me.
Someone has to say it: This app is a piece of gak and GW should be ashamed to release it in the state that it is in. The sheer gall of asking for a subscription when the app looks like it was built using an app factory is hubris of the worst kind.
Nobody's making this personal except you, mate. If you think they've provided a great product that provides what you want, I'm genuinely happy for you.
The rest of us were just amused by the "You don't like our unfinished, bug-ridden product? Ok, well how about this, we'll give you two months for the price one! That'll make things better!" marketing PR.

Yeah, I tried that, and while it lets me get to the datasheets they’re all still locked.
I read the reviews in the App Store and it appears like this is happening to pretty much anybody.

Downloaded it on my iPad and it’s clearly only meant for phones. Not interested if that’s the case, if they sort a tablet version out I might have another go.
It’s good that they’ve listened to everyone and are trying to fix things, but they never should have put out such a shoddy product to begin with.
Decided to download the app and was tempted to subscribe, as currently building and painting up Necrons and thought it would be useful to check the Codex to make sure I didn't build any illegal combinations, and obviously don't want to buy the current Codex at this point.
Unfortunately the app just instantly crashes out on my phone (Samsung Galaxy S6) anyone else got it working on one?
I did actually end up subscribing just to see how it all works. Now it seems that subscriptions are tied to single devices? I can't get to the data from my iPhone, if I press "restore purchases" after subbing to the app on my iPad, the iPhone just beachballs endlessly..
slow clap
And this "awesomeness" is supposed to replace the gorgeous digital editions of the rulebooks?? ......
I guess because they added the missing unsubscibe option and fixed subscription issues, you might need to delete your chache and/or make a fresh install
Yeah, the iOS version is also pretty bad. Not making it work as a tablet app in 2020 is just embarrassing. At least the rules PDF is the one on GW's own CDN rather than Google Drive this time?
The iOS version uses Apple's payment system rather than take it's own cards, so at least it's easier to cancel I guess? Dunno if it works across both platforms though.
It is good that GW at least sort of admitted that it wasn't good, and gave some kind of roadmap, but bluntly it's so awful I'd take it down from the App Store and give it another six months.
Certainly, I would hope this isn't supposed to be the replacement for digital editions of the books. Just give me my Warhammer Digital download of the rulebook I paid for, thanks.
GW should have been upfront and said this was a beta release and gave it away for the first 3 months as they worked on it.
Then in 3 months time when it’s mostly usable they could have added the subscription fee to it.
That would have gone over much better then this release. Even the 1 month free nonsense is to late to change people’s opinion.
I do think once several new features are added and bugs are fixed it will be a decent app.. but it needs about 3 months of dedicated work to fix... better search functions, sub categories for rules, working army builder with quick links and updated rules, mission point calculator.
Add those things and I’ll pay 4.99 a month... I would buy a years subscription if they dropped the price to 2.99-3.99 a month and fixed the above.
Still crashes immediately after launching on my S7. So still no consideration for different screen sizes at least on the Android front.
According to the stack trace since i happen to be a programmer myself, it's trying to render a bitmap that's too large (likely the Indomitus graphic with the Primaris and Necron on the start page) for the screen resolution.

I fully agree with you. I do wonder if there's contractual aspects tho between GW & the developers that prevents that level of giveaway. I doubt this is a fully inhouse app creation. We'll never know i guess. I'll revisit it when the army builder comes online

Guess that's the same issue I'm seeing on my S6 then.

Honestly if 8th edition rules had been freely available it would be a fine beta. Subscription just gives you access to the builder like Azyr and going forward codex purchases unlock updates beyond the free 8th content.
Personally though, the codex organization is appalling. Intercessors not being in the Dark Angel codex because they're in Ritual of the Damned? That's a pretty clear sign of the kind of persistent loss of functionality without additional cost we can expect to see going forward. It's possible that the list builder properly gives us a real view of the faction, but as it currently exists, it feels very much like its design is shackled by a fear of losing codex revenue.

Probably. It works on my wife's S10 which has a bigger screen size so that lends more proof to this being the case.

Yeah unfortunately the unit organization is not something they can ever change given that it's purpose is to force users to buy the expansion books to add units such as Intercessors to factions like Dark Angels. It's really scummy design and really just insulting to their customers who can see through the obvious greed going on here.
The only way this app becomes top notch is to dump all physical codex involvement, maybe charge a bigger fee for the subs, and make all rules available all the time on the app. But the dinosaurs afraid of the future still clinging to pointless dead trees make the money men unwilling to disconnect the two.
Come on guys, if you pay to beta test their bug-ridden app, you can get two months for the price of one! Why isn't everybody dancing in the streets at this incredible opportunity?
You don't get the free month anymore if you subscribe? It was only given to those people who subscribed at launch...? At least my iCloud subs dont show the free month anywhere, and I subbed after GW declared the free month thing.

I emailed WH Digital asking whether digital rulebooks have been discontinued going forward.. they havent replied yet, only stated they are under a heavy load currently and it might take them up to 10 days to reply to me.. I'm afraid that unless we make a petition of sorts and get enough people behind it we will be SOL
You’re supposed to get the free month if you subscribe before the end of July, so today. The free month is after paying for a month, so I’m not sure how they’re bookkeeping that and nothing has shown up on my end that I could see yet.

Only way it is worth it is if you like the idea of having all the 8th ed codex at your fingertips.
Once the rulebook searching and army builder come into it I'll revisit.
iOS app updated. You can read the datasheets again and they added the Indomitus units now, duplicated five times for the Space Marines. They’ve got separate identical entries for codex marines and each non-codex chapter in one big long list.
A company of GW’s caliber should be ashamed at releasing such trash. Whoever is responsible for letting this out the door in this state needs to demoted to mopping floors and cleaning toilets.

I hope not; I'd prefer it if any floors and toilets were cleaned rather more thoroughly than what is possible or deemed acceptable by the people responsible for this.
At this point I just wish I could open the fething thing.
Do they have an email or something for the app? I'd like to at least let them know it's crashing immediately after launching on certain screen resolutions so they maybe can fix that

They just need to break it down by individual datasheet
And when you search for all dark angel units. U get all the datasheets for each edition except the ones you haven’t bought the book has a lock next to it. Change all the 8th edition books into searchable epubs. But my main issue stems from how this is app organized. I want to set refined searches. I want to search all valid datasheets for 9th edition/match play/tournament legal/space marine/dark angels then all relevant datasheets should pop up with each category in a tab under each battlefield role such as HQ troop etc with the ones I don’t have visible but having a lock symbol with a pop up indicator showing which book I need. Bonus points if the older edition datasheet can be viewed with a red text disclaimer on top saying this datasheet is outdated and may not be accurate.

For the current subscription fee they could give the rules away for free and stop printing codices and what not... it would probably be a lot more profitable than trying to sell the books. At least the app would be arguably worth a 5.00 USD price tag.
Who knows.. If the app turns out to be a runaway success for GW, there is no telling what might happen to the physical books eventually. I for one wouldn't mind if they went away, if for nothing else than environmental reasons. The world is already filled with bookshelves no-one ever reads anything from, most books just end up taking storage space once they have been read once. Even if these are rulebooks used for reference purposes, new edition spam will make em all obsolete anyway within a few years. All that wood could have been left to the forests.
tauist wrote: All that wood could have been left to the forests.
Nah, the wood still would have been cut down for housing and power poles. Besides, electronics bring their own environmental problems into the mix.
GW won't stop printing physical books for some time to come, and there's still a generation or two who wants it to stay that way, me included - I enjoy cracking my books open for a read, especially when I'm sitting where I've got nothing else to do. Although I do have electronic copies of just about everything these days. PDFs on a tablet (not a phone!) are good for taking to the FLGS, hardcopy books are more relaxing when around the house futzing about.
They said they will update the rules in the app (advanced rules added and searchable). I did the update last week but nothing changed. I still have the linked google drive doc with basic rules, and i'm subscribed from the start. Is it my version that's corrupt or havent' they released the ruleset in the app?

Fixing the core rules is supposed to be the next update, the last one was supposed to be fixing the typos in the stats.

I guess the timeline was initially to spend all the time after launch doing development on the Battle Forge, but they had to scrap that when the launch was a catastrophe and it was all hands on deck to make it a bit less embarrassing.
The thing that annoys me is that I think everyone can see the potential here.
Maybe outsourcing and covid had an impact on the app. I also can understand the pressures to get anything out instead of nothing.
But they are just not helping themselves with it not being right.
Army builder HAS to be good.
if they have any sense they will delay that until they are SURE it is right and then release. Even if it takes until september
It's definitely not coming out in August at this point. Given what a complete disaster the app has been, they might be better off just rebooting it completely a couple months down the road when it actually is ready, with a different name, to avoid the prior terrible ratings.
Just updated to the new version which supposedly includes the core rules, and now the app stopped displaying any datasheets!? I cannot access any entry. Not sure if me updating to the latest iPadOS 14beta4 has anything to do with it. Anyone else having probs?
I'll reinstall the app just to be sure
EDIT: Reinstalled the app. Still broken. I hope this gets fixed ASAP as I have an active subscription
The Sunday announcement made it sound like they'll be publishing the updated PLs for free, not just in the app. I doubt even GW would be incompetent and craven enough to lock the new PLs behind yet another paywall, and such a non-functioning one at that.

They'll need to release a pdf document alongside, otherwise you can't open the datahseets in the app to check power levels, unless they decide to make the datasheets free to read with PL and you get points & other content when subscribed, which wouldn't be entirely crazy.
Still not working even after the PL update on iPadOS 14beta4. I cannot click on anything except for the three menu items on the bottom. When trying to sign in, I cannot get the keyboard to show, but did manage to do something which invoked google chrome help documentation, which makes me think the 40K app is leveraging Google Chrome browser somehow (guessing chrome must be built into the app since I do not have chrome installed on my iPad). This makes the fact that iPad native resolutions arent supported super lame, as Google Chrome on its own supports iPad native resolutions just fine.
Therefore, I'd wager all the data within the app is just HTML. The content is probably just a quick n dirty copypaste

Why are you clicking? I thought this wasn't on PC/Mac just android and apple. Shouldn't you mean tapping? By clicking I am believing you are using a mouse and PC. Just making sure.

Bluestacks runs Android apps, including the 40k app, on a PC.
But, "I cannot get the keyboard to show" suggests phone-based access.
