Hi Dakkanauts. It's me, back once again with another sculpting project. This time I've got a proper game in mind. None other than Burrows & Badgers.

It's a game I've been excited to explore ever since I came across Mike Lovejoy's wonderful minis while looking for a suitable Hedgehog mini for my boy. Maybe you already know How that went suffice it to say I've had a good start at sculpting and I'm keen to keep at it, continue to hone my skills and improve.

So I'm beginning my journey with a lovely hard back edition Rulebook (Published by Osprey) and a Warband B starter set.

I'm going to be looking very closely at these miniatures and trying to emulate the Lovejoy style (slim chance, these are absolutely gobsmackingly gorgeous sculpts) in an attempt to create some of my own unique Burrows & Badgers inspired creations.

Wish me luck.

Good luck! I’m sure they’ll come out great if Hedgee & friends are anything to go by!

Thanks Gobert.

Hedgee's Heroes are making up a significant proportion of the boy's Wild Beasts Warband. My guys are led by R-mour Dog of course so it looks like I'm going Royalists. That said I'm not focusing my sculpts specifically for a Royalist (armoured soldiers type) Warband. I'm going to just see what I come up with and let the sculpting tool decide.

Those sculpts are great. Looking forward to what you do with this project. I was tempted to get some for my little Burrows & Badgers collection, but then I saw the "Critter Kingdoms" line from Dark Sword Miniatures at a nearby brick and mortar shop and went with them. Be prepared to hold back on your children with the game - it can be absolutely unforgiving. It's a lot of fun and has some great room to develop a story in.

Yes, Critter Kingdoms is a beautiful range. Gorgeous even. I'll deffinately be looking to those for inspiration but if I buy more minis for this I'll most likely buy direct from Oathsworn again. It helps that they're UK based and postage is low too.

So here we go then.
Ive started things off with some resin casts I made of these two sculpts I did for my kids.

Sniffy and Cheesy.

The casts...

We're kind of rubbish.

And the second time around.

An improvement but still a little on the small side for Burrows & Badgers scale mice or shrews. But still, a decent vehicle upon which to build, I reckoned. So I skipped the wire armature and filler stage and went right in with the greenstuff. (After a few careful snips)

The result.

Sniffy cast number one became a Slayer shrew, complete with slayer axe, hairdo and a big tummy. Sniffy cast number two is toting a mordheim crossbow and has a bit more by way of clothing.

Then there's the Cheesy casts.

Cheesy Cast number one (noseless due to a bubble when casting) I decided would look well as a bat. So he got snipped back and wire framed for wings. I made the main wings base out of milliput (not sure I'd really recommend that) but he's still at a pretty early stage.
Cheesy Cast two on the other hand is finished in a classic spearman (Spearmouse?) configuration, pointy hat and all.

All these resculpts so far have been bulked up considerably around the legs and arms, and with clothing and weapons they're becoming more in line with the correct scale.

Though I'd say they're on the small side of small. Maybe they'll look more the part on a proper 30mm base. These temp bases are just placeholders for now.

So that's all for now. Work on the bat continues apace. Hopefully I'll have completed picks of him soon.

Thrifty reuse of the casts, and some great details. Bat wings are already looking good, and the size looks like you nailed it.

Thanks guys. I'm having fun.

More wire frames

And actual proper milliput on them this time since I'm making an effort to do this right.

Think I'm on target for scale somewhere in the medium beast range between a rabbit and a squirrel. Can you guess what these two will be?

Woo the bat! That one is my favorite so far.

Is there going to be a mole in there? And will he like turnip pie?

I've got these rules and i'd love to do something with them, but i'm short on approriate minis, so it's really neat to see what you're up to here!

Correctamundo! The one on the right is indeed a mole. I can't say for sure how he feels about turnip pie. Is that a Redwall reference perhaps? I've only just discovered Redwall since encountering it among Burrows & Badgers fandom. My mole will owe more to Kenneth Grahame than Brian Jaques I suspect.

Hang on, I was right!

Not that I discourage the use of milliput, but any particular reason to view it as the 'right' way?

My considering milliput the right way is more as opposed to my previous method of bulking the frame with PVA glue and tissue paper. It tended to produce quite thin frames to build on and as a result many of my older sculpts are quite fine. Not nearly as bulked out as your typical heroic 28mm figure. I'm noticing with the milliput the material has limitations on how thin a sausage can be before it crumbles so by nature it creates a bulkier base to build on. I'm sure there are many other materials and options out there but I'm finding this to be right for me and for what I'm aiming for.

That said it's kinda horrible stuff to work with. All chalky and sticky.

Sculpts are looking great, crowe. Kinda inspiring me to try my hand at sculpting for Burrows & Badgers, but I still have plenty of High Elves to work on. Things like Redwall and Wind in the Willows from my childhood are what drew me towards Burrows & Badgers, and I see references to them all the time. A little surprised you had never heard of Redwall until now. I suppose it's more niche than I thought.

The impression I got is that Redwall was much more popular in the UK than in the states? I grew up with it here in Canada though.

Anyway, lots of new sculpts on the go. I'll take some pics and update soon. Thanks everyone for the support and encouragement.

The old stop-motion Wind in the Willows show was one of my favourites when I was a kid. The book's not too bad either. It's got that kind of edwardian middle-englander feel that you might get out of Tolkien. It doesn't go too epic, but there's not too much distance between a mole-hole and a hobbit-hole.

Fair enough!

Sounds about right. It's the only putty where I have to go wash my hands right after mixing it. It takes some getting used to, and there are a couple of tips that might help, like leaving it to firm up for twenty minutes or so (inconvenient); being spare with the water if that's what you use to lube tools; the fact that it's fairly easy to sculpt after it hardens; and especially, mixing some greenstuff into it.
Try mixing half-and-half or 1:2 GS:milliput to begin with, for bulking out the core of a sculpt. Maybe less greenstuff when you get the idea, but too little won't have much effect. Anyway, you should be able to see how the GS helps bind the chalky texture of the milliput.
On the other end, a little milliput added to GS can help loosen it, if it's a bit too stiff.

Looking forward to see what's up next, whatever you use to make it.

Stick with what you know and all that. I don't like sculpting human faces, I'm bad at it and I don't like practicing at things I'm bad at when I could be having fun doing what I enjoy. It's a bad work ethic, I know. I'm not taking any commissions so I'll pick cute and fuzzy every time.

Very interesting! I'd never considered mixing them. I'll have to see what I can do with that. Though half the point is to use less greenstuff. But knowledge of better ways to work when necessary are great tools to have, so thanks.

I love the Wind in the Willows- the title itself is a clue to how poetic and absolutely gorgeous the writing is. Honestly, if you have a love of the English language and aren't too fussy about internal world consistency in your stories then it's an absolute gem. The chapter whence comes the title is just increadibly beautiful. Its an adventure and scene understandably absent in the delightful stop motion animation which was long enough without it and didn't rush you along either. And David Jason's Fabulous Mister Toad is pure magic. Anyway, I'll not wax lyrical about it any more. I'm not making the river bank gang in Burrows & Badgers, just one mole. (And a weasel, I'll spill the beans)

And here they are so far.

A good ways still to go on both as you can see. And what's been keeping me?

This guy.

He's a Large size hound, or will be. In Burrows & Badgers, (for those who don't know) each creature is either small 30mm base (mouse,) medium 30mm base (rabbit), large 40mm base (otter) or massive 50mm base (Badger)
In this picture the new hound is shown between a Large Otter and a (bit large for a) medium Rabbit.

So of course if Hedgee is the boy's leader my leader had to be, R-mour Dog! (Even though a dog is a rubbish leader in this game.)
R-mour Dog has also gotten to a half way green stage

Is it cheating to use the stuff from GW out of my bits box? It is I suppose but it's getting the job done.

That's all for now folks. Thanks for looking and for all the comments. C&C welcome and encouraged.

Used to be a common thing for some pro sculptors to mix brown stuff or even fimo into their GS to loosen it. And then there was the time when a bunch of us on a tyranid forum got hooked on doing that with apoxie sculpt. Here's a blog article by one of those guys to explain a bit more.

Though half the point is to use less greenstuff.

Surely! You can try less GS over time, just to see if it gets you over the milliput hump.

I might have undersold it.

Brilliant work on the mole's clothes. I'm also pretty impressed by the detail of the claws on his feet, not to mention R-MourDog's hair and mail. And no problem at all with bits box raiding!

Progress for tonight.

Mole has one paw left to do along with the pick axe he'll be leaning it on.
Not really happy with his face but we'll see how he paints up. If I ever get round to painting anything.

Weazel is all done. Pretty happy with him though he's not really long enough in the body, but that's ok.

R-mour dog is coming along one armour piece at a time. Slow progress on that fella.

Thanks guys, I'm pretty happy with the breastplate myself. But honestly it was just the beginning. He's now finished and I'm really pleased with the result.

I'm sure many of these bits of armour have proper names and historical contexts and I'm sure no soldier ever (or dog) wore quite this combination.

I'm happy with the overall look of the character anyway. He's an armoured dog and he looks about the right size to be a large hound in the game.

In other news...

Moley got a pickaxe for breaking rocks and skulls. So that's him complete too.

Time to hit this lot with some primer, I think.

Thanks gobert. He's probably about as tall but feels a bit heftier, a bit more substantial.

Um, painting... Yeah. I've really not been in much of a painting mood. There's more grey in this box than a confederate reenactment convention. I suppose I should crack out the old hair sticks.

Thanks CB. The new, ye Olden days R-mour dog is a big hit with the boy. He's calling him Olden Dog! Har har.

Really struggled with the snake scales.

It's messy but I guess I'm ok with it as a basis to work from. I'll prob add some items like a magic cloak and hat etc to try and distract from the messy scales.

Not that I'm blaming my tools (or lack thereof) but this has been the first time that I've felt that my one sculpting tool wasn't really the right shape for what I needed. Maybe like a sharp flat diamond shape end would've been the one? Anywho, I'm not planning on any more snakes any time soon. Just a bird with large wings! Yikes. I might be stretching my sculpting abilities to the limit here.

Post by: Vermis

R-Mour Dog is excellent. I especially like the Airedale/Scottie face. Talking about 'scottie', is that a sporran?

The bird is already excellent. Just the pose and basic shape! Pose and attitude in gaming minis is something that often gets overlooked in favour of piling on detail, IMO. (Let me pick out any two 3d-printed gang kickstarters or patreons from News and Rumours) Things might slow down a bit now, depending on how much you get into the feathers, but IMO you've already got a really good foundation to sculpt them on.

The snake scales don't look too bad from here. I think I can see what you mean down where the coils start, and yeah, I'd chalk that up the difficulty of winkling a sculpting tool into nooks and crannies, and the learning process.

I've felt that my one sculpting tool wasn't really the right shape for what I needed.

What do you use?

theCrowe sculpts anthro animals for Burrows & Badgers, Taking to the skies! @ 2020/08/17 20:19:48

Post by: theCrowe

Thanks Vermis. Yes I totally agree about dynamic posing and how much it brings to a figure. I would concede though that since I'm not sculpting for production I'm not restricted in the same ways as someone like Mike Lovejoy who has to consider the best shape and pose to produce a strong single piece metal product that will cast well and look great at the same time. It's a whole other skill that is thankfully not yet required of me.

Yes, it is indeed a sporran and it was the inspiration for the dog breed choice. The tail wagging the dog a bit there maybe.

And this be it. My stainless steel magic wand.

It's got a good combination of sharpness and roundness, flatness and curves. The only other thing I ever really use is a notice board pin for eyes or little holes.

Post by: theCrowe

Well as Vermis predicted things have indeed slowed down a bit.

Getting on with the tail feathers has been an education but I have a good few WFB birds in my old wood elves army to use as refference. The snake scales continue in patches with only the top of his head left to complete.

Still planing some kind of clothing for both though. So some of the scales and feathers will likely end up covered over. I think the crow will get trousers and maybe a hood. The snake is going for a Victorian hypnotist vibe. Top hat and tails.

Anyway, on with the progress update.

Bird man just got some trews and then I went and started a new, massive sized badger sculpt! That's gonna be a beast.

In other news, I finally took the plunge and got on with the first wing sculpt.

Pretty tricky but I seem to have got the hang of it. It's jut going to take a LONG time to do both sides of both wings. Still I'm enjoying the experience. Don't think I'll do another bird for a while though.

They’re not too dissimilar size wise, though an Alsatian would be much larger than a Scottie irl, so that puts the scale quite a bit different I suppose.

The feathers are really looking great, but I can see how they’d take so long and put you off doing another anytime soon!

Quite nice, quite stylish. A gentlesnake looks good in purple. And yes, he looks the part of a victorian style hypnotist or other such con snake.

Thanks guys, glad yous enjoy his snappy glad rags.

Well since this is supposed to be a sculpting project I've gotten back into the green stuff and begun building up this big fella.

I also fattened him up with a few blobs of milliput just so he wasn't such a long tall drink of water.

This badger isn't going to be the Royalist type, I think. I can buy a royalist badger, all shiny plate armour and the like if I want one. But this fella is more the raggedy mercenary badger type. A big gruff brute that likes to click little critters' doors down and steal their silverware.

I had never heard of this game before this blog but I am so happy that I have now. Your fur and feathers are incredible mate; the patience is unreal. Working backwards I would never have picked that some of the sculpts weren't done by professional model companies.

Your character ideas are hilarious and inspiring and I will be following this blog with interest! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks tzurk I really appreciate that. The pictures are hiding a multitude of sins though. There's a gulf of perfection seperating my work from the pros, trust me. Glad you're enjoying the big green journey.

Sculpting continues on my big Brock football hooligan. (Thanks Vit, you're absolutely right. I'll have to name him after a footballer with some Badger pun name. Shame my entire football knowledge comes from 1995 premier league football stickers. I'll be happy to hear any of your comedy footie name suggestions.

Gave him a big fuzzy tum. And you can see I've moved the little purse pocket from the right hip over to the left. I'm going to sling a satchel on the right there.

And a nice shabby leather vest/coat thingy. I've tried to indent where I want a cross belt bag strap to go over that left shoulder and down his back tucking under the coat on the right side and up across his chest.

Great sculpting as ever theCrowe. It’s the little details that get me, like how neat the little belt buckle is.

Whilst my football knowledge went on about a decade longer, I can’t think of any badger related names. Google didn’t help and now I’m trying not to get sucked in to a MrWeebl YouTube hole! Badger, Badger, Badger, Badger, Badger, Badger, Mushroom, Mushroom! Oh how much better I could’ve done had I gone to uni ahead of the internet!

Shrew-zerkers... I'm gonna steal this. Your version, painted, is just the right thing for the whole company of B-n-B shrews. An admirable feat, congratulations!

Bat and mouse are both very good. Have a vibe from old tin dwarfs and harpies of GW and Reaper some 20 years ago.

Yeah, I can see the influence of some of my oldest WFB miniatures in these fellas for sure. I really should do some research and see who sculpted some of that old stuff. Learn who my influences really are.

Speaking of influences, I had another look at Mike Lovejoy's original badger sculpting tutorial to get a notion of how the badger's head should look.

Stage one is curing,

Stage two will see ears, teeth and likely a hat! (I do love an animal in a hat)

Hi folks, back once again with another few steps toward badger sculpt completion.

First we have some extended armatures for the arms and axe.

Drilled a hole, plonked some wire in, added an old plastic axe-head. Glued it all up nice and solid. Next on this will be to give it some milliput for filler and basic shape.

But the real fun was on this end.

Oh yes, badger got teeth and ears and a Peaky Blinders hat!

So now he's a Peaky Boy it's kind of hard to avoid the name Tommy and of course Beatrix Potter's badger character was Tommy Brock so... that fits I suppose.
But, you know I haven't been falling over myself to name my other sculpts for this project so I don't see why this guy gets special treatment, just cause he's big. Maybe I should name the rest of them all. Any suggestions will be considered.

Tommy’s looking good, but then again who doesn’t love an animal in a hat! Especially a badger in a hat! As for names for the others, the bat from page 1 strikes me as a Boris for some reason, maybe the cricket bat makes me think public schoolboy? Dave is always a good animal name in our house, Dave the a polar bear being the first iteration!

theCrowe sculpts anthro animals for Burrows & Badgers, Taking to the skies! @ 2020/10/14 23:20:49

Post by: theCrowe

Well... Dave is my name. So I may as well just name the crow after myself. Come to think of it, he needs a hat.

We have a polar bear teddy called SnowJoe.

I like Boris the bat. Perfect.

Quick progress update

I migh file that elbow into shape but otherwise good to go on big furry arms and fists.

Thanks guys. Yeah he is a bit of an odd one. I suppose no miniature sculptor with an eye toward production would choose a pose like that. You'd have to cast it in at least four parts.

But I suppose I can buy a conventional badger. If I'm making my own I may as well go for something I can't buy.

I'd love to see this guy side by side against an Oathsworn badger just for comparison sake. And to have one of those beauties in my collection too of course.

Nothing else on the sculpting schedule at the moment. I'm enjoying the painting for the time being. But you never know when the notion might strike.

I do need a fox and an owl and maybe a couple more weasels.

Another side by side of two painted minis.

My own sculpt of a... Weasel?.. Stoat?.. Rat? He's not as long as I'd have liked though I do like him well enough.
And then on the right its an Oathsworn original by the man himself. A lovely squirrel archer. One of my favourites so far. I'd like to maybe have a crack at a squirrel myself. Something really athletic and dynamic looking.

Thanks Cap, thank you Viterbi. I'm glad my minis are holding their own next to the real deal. Double header tonight with two pairs to show.

You've seen him mostly painted before but now he's done. It's Olden Dog. And on the left, as has become my custom for this project, the side by side size and style comparison is Mike Lovejoy's Otter Pirate.

And one more pair, but on the smaller side.

It's the (free with every purchase of the Osprey Burrows & Badgers rule book) Mouse Burglar. Another great little critter. Alongside my own, (admittedly kinda weird looking) Mole Miner. A lot of red on the go for these two. Unintentional colour matching for their Dakka match up.

So all I have left to pair now are the Oathsworn miniatures sparrow and rabbit, and my own crow and Badger.

Then it'll be on to bases. They have arrived, I just haven't started putting them on yet. When the whole lot are painted up I'll get them all properly based and then they'll all get flock and tufts and all that good stuff.

Thanks to you both for your kind comments. I'm deffinately find it that cute and fluffy is my forte when it comes to sculpting minis. I see some truely toe-curling work from the many excellent and gifted sculptors on dakka, all tentacles and gruesome noisome nurglified things and while I'm very impressed I have no desire to create such things myself. I can't even make a spooky bat without a bad cricket joke!

Anyway, Big day for Burrows & Badgers at my house today because these arrived!

Left to right these are a Hound and a Fox (both Large Beasts) a Badger (Massive Beast) and a Weasel (medium)
All superbly sculpted and produced by Oathsworn Miniatures.

So naturally I got dead excited and before the night was out I had these on the bench.

Left to right these are going to be (probbably) a medium Weasel/ferret/stoaty thingy, a Swan (massive bird) a fox (large) and another Weasel/ferret/stoaty thingy.

Been painting away at another side by side pair. A little bird and a bigger one. Looking forward to showing them soon.

Yes, she's a resin cast. I do prefer a hefty metal mini but I'm not complaining at all, she's a great piece and full of character. I'll have to show you the side by side with own badger who I made before I'd seen the scale of Oathsworn's "massive" creatures which, lets just say isn't quite as massive as I'd imagined.

I've been a busy sculpting other things but I'm back in Burrows & Badgers mode and cracking on with the milliput.

Another bird because apparently I hate myself and the fox. These are the two I have the most solid notion of what I'm going for. The Swan will be a straight up Royal Guard/beefeater type with a halberd. Then the fox will be a rich Victorian gentleman with a top hat and cane. (He's actually from a Hedgee's Heroes story. The evil Barron Von Clinkels. )

Update on progress with this lot.

Ive been having trouble with the soft wire I used for the armatures. Far too soft and prone to bending even with a layer of milliput and greenstuff on top. I may have to fix some legs with stiffer wire at some point.
And yes the eagle eyes among you might note I've been using brown stuff too. I don't find it much different than greenstuff to be honest. It's a bit softer I think, unless I'm just mixing it wrong. I like working with it.

Anyway, beefeater swan has the feet an legs done and the top of his uniform with an embroidered crown on the breast.
The Barron is mostly a Victorian clotheshorse at this point. That doofy hat is just a skeleton to support a propper stovepipe top hat in the future.
The weasel brothers are now sporting a variety of armour types. Been playing with textures a bit to do chainmail and scale armour. I'm planning on making them both some pretty nasty looking critters, though my record tends toward the cute and fluffy so we'll see.
I also plan on bagging some dirt-cheap eBay rejects of the Skaven variety to fix up. I'd actually like to try and Cuteify them for Burrows and Badgers purpouses if at all possible. Just for fun. Depends on what I can find I suppose.

Thanks everyone for your comments and encouragement. You're all keeping me going to see this lot through to the final stage. (Which involves wings again! Kill me now) I'm having a great time with these latest creatures so far so I'll crack on with a bit more detailed of an update this time.

Starting with the stoaty/ferrets. I've gotten a fairly high percentage completed with just the heads still to do and the hands on that two-handed sword.

A rear view shows some of the detail going on there. Really enjoying the two different armour styles on these two but trying not to over complicate things. I'll have to give them a solid eyeballing one their heads are done just to see if anyone needs a hat!

Then scaling up to the big boys,

The Barron is coming together at last and the Swan is a couple of wings away from parade-ready. The top hat has begun to take shape, it just needs a rim but I'll do that after I've done his face.

The swan's hat is at skeleton stage just now but will eventually have flowers and everything! I might clip that pole axe down to size a bit too.

Then old foxy has both panels of his coat on the back complete but only one in front as I had to set the arms in place before I fit the last one around his little teapot handle left hip lean. That'll be next, followed by coat sleeves and hands and a fuzzy little face.

Lots of work still to do on these.

Pneumo wrote:I have to agree with vejut, the tiny hat and the large Pole axe just fit together perfectly. Really liking the look of it

Well now the final layer on the hat is done and it's naturally a bit bigger and I've also clipped about a cm off the pole so the axe is a bit shorter. Hopefully neither will ruin the effect.

Feather sculpting has begun but rather than spam another small step update I'll maybe just show them all finished when I get there. Unless anyone is really keen to see each stage of the build up in granular detail. I'm never sure how useful that is to anyone. Fox's coat is done with the left front and sleeves complete, one of the ferrets is complete and he other is a head away from done at this stage.

Thanks for your interest and comments. Looking forward to painting somemore soon. Dave and Tommy are still languishing in sad grey primer.

Ninja owl might be good. Though I'm not keen on a hood as the Oathsworn sparrow I have already has one and I don't want to do the same thing. I'm ready Harry Potter to the boy these days and might go with a Hogwarts owl theme.

Yes my feather game has definitely sped up. Greenstuff is better than brownstuff for feathers I think. Brown is a bit too soft and messy. Anyway just so I don't go nuts doing two birds at once I have a plan for some light entertainment between featherings.

An old Skaven plague monk and a warcry troll thingy with a big chin that's been lurking in my pile for about a decade are joining the B&B train. A magic rat and a magic toad coming up.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

And here is the first blowin from another game. WFB plague monk gets the derpy wizard treatment with the addition of a hat and a beard. I also added a staff topper skull from my wood elves bits and extended his tail a bit. He's a bit on the small side too, straight up B&B mouse sized in fact so I bulked up the base to give him a little boost and hopfully the profile boosting additions will help to embiggin him to rat status.

One Hypno-Toad ready to croak some wild magical mayhem. He was far too big with his backpack of scrolls and even removing it and attempting to reduce his profile a bit doesn't really bring him down to medium size as a toad should be for B&B but he fits on the small base fine, so that's ok.

Yes gobert, it's been a very productive weekend. I don't sit still but I've a sculpting tool in hand and some putty on my left thumbnail.

And just one more before the working week is upon us again.

The original feathered fiend Dave the Crow has paint on. Here's the obligatory side by side against an Oathsworn sparrow, though I painted it up as a chaffinch.

Thanks Viterbi. Yes, it was very necessary with his feathers being so dark. My only concern is that he looks like he's supporting Brazil in the World Cup. Nothing wrong with that, I suppose.

And now at last, two more finished sculpts.

Hogwarts owl and Viking Hawk. I'm not too super keen on their faces but hopfully they'll look good with paint on.

Thanks CB. The photos hide some of the messy bits though that I fear the paint won't hide quite so well. I'm having to take a file to the hawk's feet to tidy up those claws. Still, looking forward to slapping some primer on.

amazingturtles wrote:I like the viking hawk, he seems very gruff.

He looked pretty derpy before he got a helm. And the eye part looked like big Elton John specs for a while so im glad it's turned out gruff one way or another. He's got some leather pauldrons now too.

Shows what I know about football. ie not much. I hear some footballers don't even use dice!
Hedgee has lost his sword at the moment so I might have to fix that first but rest assured you will see that, eventually. Painting some badgers right now, then there's some stiff competition for who's up next. I really want to see the Barron and the Beefeater in paint, though Hooter I'm sure would be a quicker job, and the boy would be happy to see him tabletop ready.

And as if I didn't already have enough to be getting on with...

Thanks for the kind comments Max. I hope to keep it up. From wireframe to painted mini can be a long time, especially since I don't do just one at a time.

Gobert, thanks. WWE with dice might actually make me watch a football match. There seems to be a lot in common with both sports when players make contact.

Thanks AT, wait til you see...

I've been away from Dakka a bit more this week (as I've been painting a set of Nesting Dolls for my wife) but I've been keeping up my hobby progress too, little by little. Two badgers almost painted which I'll be excited to share soon I hope.

But most exciting (I hope you'll agree) is this little fella.

The idea came from my son (or course) who has a little turtle teddy and wanted a turtle to join Hedgee's heros on the Burrows and Badgers table. He's also much more directly inspired by the Hammer Bros in Super Mario than anything TMNT related.

Then, in other Burrows & Badgers news. The ranks are swelling with some plastic vermin.

A couple of eBay Storm Vermin refugees. I'm keeping the one with the pole arm as is though I'll probably sculpt on some more heavy armour. Then the other I've clipped and fitted with a crossbow to provide another ranged option for my collection.

Then there's this guy...

He's vintage Ral-Partha lizard guy. And yes I recall him having arms holding axes but clearly teenage me had little to no respect for classic miniatures. But at least now, being more than twice as old as I was then, hopefully wiser and certainly handier with the hobby skills, I'll be able to redeem this little fella. It's this or buy an old Skink champion.

Yet another great update, the Hammer Bros turtle looks fantastic, if a little lonely! . Thankfully teenage gobert was not that adventurous so most of my old stuff is built to print. Which is a good thing as I don’t have the skills to craft a new pair of hands and an arm! Good luck rescuing him

Thanks guys. Looking forward to seeing some paint on him. Though at this stage that's like "join the cue fella. Hope you brought a deck chair and a packed lunch."

Anyway, quick update. Lots of fun fixing up these three today.

First up its Eddy Lizard.

His right arm got the chop (again!) and then I added a set of Night Goblin archer arms. They had cloak sleeves so he got a full length coat (which is a bit hard to see in this photo), a quiver of arrows and a little hand weapon on the back of his belt.
He's a bit of an odd looking fella... Prob needs a hat.

Then there's these two.

I wanted to take them away from the traditional Skaven aesthetic if possible and I think some of that was achieved with the crossbow for a start. For that guy I also added a kinda viking looking helmet and some chainmail.
The other regular Storm Vermin guy got a bit more shoulder armour and a dinky little tin hat to try and break up that hunched back silhouette. I also added a fleur de lis to his shield because what Skaven ever had one of those?

Yes, I'll prob go for some nice bold primary colours too to really take him out of the gutter. I think a skateboard might be a step too far!
What a comedy autocorrect from Skaven to Skateboard! Quite tempting in fact. Makes me want to see a Skaven Marty McFly skitching a ride on the back of a chariot.

Finally, the painted Badgers Comparison picture!

You can see how much bigger big Tommy is than his Oathsworn counterpart. He was sculpted before I'd bought a "massive" creature and I perhaps took the massive part a bit too literally.

And what took me so long painting the badgers? (Apart from the sculpting of two ferrets, two birds and a tortoise.)
Painting these foxes of course!

Really love this Oathsworn fox buccaneer. He's just a really simple and elegant sculpt. Took my time painting him up. Now compared to him my own foxy, Barron Von Klinkels is a bit rough. A bit big (theme developing here) and actually a bit wolf-like. But I'm happy with him. He's got some character I think.

Next up on the painting block... I dunno. Swan in a hat? The boy wants Turtly painted so he might skip the queue. But then again he wants another Badger sculpted, a boxer badger to be Sledgee's arch rival in the ring.

There is apparently no interest in either a second hammer bro or a Skateboarding rat.

Great work theCrowe! As for your guys being a bit on the large side I think you can sell them as male/female depending on the species as to which one is bigger. Thanks very much for coming out of lurker mode to say so. You're very kind. I will say though that my phone camera pics hide a lot of imperfections and my sculpts are often quite a lot less smooth and finished than the pros and I suspect that's the real difference. Still some way to go before I'd claim to be as good. But I'm really enjoying myself and I'm still learning a lot as I go along.

The better paint job on the Oathsworn fox does show, I noticed that myself when I took the side by side pic and cringed a bit at how harsh my paint job on my own fox is. I don't really like his blue waistcoat but I can't think what would work better with the purple and dark grey. Anywho, I'm recconciled to not being as great a painted as many Dakka P&M bloggers, yourself included. I steal my opportunities to paint when I can and I'm just happy to have a finished mini sometimes however it comes out.

amazingturtles wrote:The turtle is the best! I can really see the hammer bro inspiration in the pose too.

Thanks AT. Yes the Barron is sinister. That really was the main thing I was going for so I'm glad it comes through. And the turtle got more and more koopa troopa as I went along. Even more so now that he's painted!

Yes, the Turtle jumped the queue, or perhaps he just went slow and steady and won the race.

Actually he came in a close second to the surprise winner Eddie Lizard.

Nice contrast between these two. Turtly ended up very bright and colourful where Eddy is more the dark and brooding ranger type.

Swan is coming on nicely too. Most of the base layer is down so he's starting to look really fun.

Don’t knock your painting, especially when you sculpt as well as you do! For me it’s about enjoyment, so spend the time on any bits you enjoy. The latest pair look great, though turtle looks like his shoes might be on the wrong feet. Or maybe I just used to my kids getting it the wrong way round!

Good thinking Viterbi. Not sure how viable a wolf/fox cross would be but if we can believe they can walk around on their back legs wearing clothes and wielding offensive weapons then I can say a half fox half wolf is totally legit.

Well thanks gobert, I appreciate your encouragement. I do enjoy painting when I can. In fact these days I'm taking every opportunity to. So much so that I have another painted mini to show.

No Oathsworn side by side comparison this time but I'm happy that Mr Swan is a suitably massive addition to the collection to warrant his own spotlight.
This angle really shows up the unfinished base though. I've a box from greenstuff world under the Christmas tree containing some new basing materials. I'm hoping to get as many minis as possible painted before the end of the holidays to get them all based at once. Might actually be a pretty big job come to think of it.

gobert wrote:Wow! Swany looks great! The white feathers came out really nicely, but his beefeater bib steals the show! Was the crown sculpted or freehand painted? I’m not sure which option to be most impressed by!

Thanks gobert. I did mark out the crown in the sculpt with some little dots but it was a bit off centre. The paint on top really has more to do with the final crown shape, the little divots in the end just add some depth. But I'm very happy with him, he looks like he'd be a serious contender on the tabletop.

The example given for a massive bird is a Raven, I thought yeah... But a Swan though... That's a massive bird.
Glad to like the turtle. That's a solid endorsement coming from you.

Verisimilitude in fantasy is the key. Pink toes does some of the lifting to supsend that disbelief. Glad to have made you laugh too. Thanks for your encouragement and hope you had a very merry Christmas too.

Thanks gobert. I'm trying to make an effort on the Oathsworn minis as I'm keen to show them off for the great minis they are. And since I didn't sculpt them I feel I ought to put the effort in with the paint job.

Viterbi wrote:I always love when you put doubles up, because I try not to read the text and guess, which one is yours and which one the mini I could buy. And it is not an easy task, because your modeling really sets a high standard.

Well I'm glad you're having fun and that it's a challenge is a great compliment. I've always maitained though that the finishing of my minis, the smoothness of surfaces and clean lines isn't what I'd call professional. And also I'm not sculpting for production so I have that luxury to help make my poses as dynamic as I like.

I post the doubles pics mostly because I want to compare them too. Because I'm making these to play burrows and badgers I want to keep the original asthetic and scale and attitude in mind throughout so the project doesn't veer off into my own wierd world and end up looking very unlike Burrows & Baders as it has been imagined. The doubles pics are a kind of control measure in a way.

Fifty wrote:I have to admit, I haven't checked this thread in ages, as anthro stuff is not normally for me. Your stuff has so much bags of character though that it overcomes my normal lack of enthusiasm!

Wind in the Willows is indeed a fantastic book. Totally lacking any internal consistency in its world building but somehow none the worse for it. Another case where bags of character overcomes any obstacle.

A Lapine with a gun could of course be Buggs but it just seemed too obvious. Besides nobody likes a wise guy. I hope his face doesn't end up looking like Buggs Bunny in the end, I wouldn't appreciate that.

Sculpting on Elmer has progressed somewhat.

Rear view this time cause there's more new to see. Still have the head to do, which is still detachable so I'll see how handy that is. I'm also going to bulk out his bunny tail and maybe add some accessories too. He needs a knife and the ubiquitous pocket purse money bag.

I just enjoyed reading through this blog now too. A fun way to spend New Years Eve Something that is mentioned a few pages ago now, I have to agree that your sculpts definitely hold there own with the official figures. You may want to sculpt one in secret and prime it gray, then prime an official model in green to really confuse people
I'm really blown away about your sculpting ability, and have really enjoyed seeing your creations.

Thanks for taking the time to read through it all Syro_ you've had quite a productive year yourself. Your big group picture was a real variety show. I know you're only kidding about the ways to try and pass off one of my own sculpts as a proper pro one but honestly I'm not trying to compete or wanting to fool anyone, I've tried to be as up front and clear about what I'm showing. The last thing I'd want is someone looking at the Oathsworn sculpts and thinking I did that. I wouldn't want to claim credit there or have anyone confused in any way, just to be clear. I'm absolutely not into that but I appreciate the compliment.

First update for the new year. (Though technically it was a completed sculpt before midnight so ta the last one of 2020)

Elmer the Hare is done! (Though that gun barrel is looking like it could use a drilling out from this angle.)
Gosh, Elmer what big ears you have! All the better to pinpoint your exact location in low-light conditions and shoot you, my dear.

Yes, it was meant as a compliment. As someone who doesn't play Badgers & Burrows, and who wouldn't already know and recognize the official line, I honestly think that I wouldn't be able to tell which are bought and which were sculpted when they are all painted up and standing together. That's all I was trying to get across about the quality of your sculpting. I don't think you would be trying to trick anyone, sorry if it sounded like I was suggesting any dishonesty.

Elmer looks good, btw

Have to agree with Syro_ here. Many of your own sculpts and conversions are so well done that they'd easily pass as actual minis of the game. Carry on the great work.

Happy new year to you too AT, and to all the Dakkanauts. Thanks Max and Syro_.
Yes, he's a nice looking piece, I'm quite pleased with him. Was lookig at the rules though and there's not much point in giving a caliver to a hare seeing as his ranged dice is one of his lowest but nevermind, I like the idea of him.

And he's not the only idea to have popped up on my cork of sculptitude.

Another "massive" creature on the make (hopefully not quite so massive this time) on the big cork. Head sold seperately.
Then on the bottle cork. (Happy New Year! Pop.) is a new mystery medium sized creature. I'll let you guess what these might be as we go.

Ive been trying to get some painting done too so hopefully a couple of finished minis coming up soon. And as you'll note above Tommy has had his base done properly as have a good few others. I have a plan to take nice proper pics of larger groups all based alike for each of the four factions, camera, computer and time permitting. But plenty of painting, basing and apparently more sculpting to do in preparation. All plans for 2021.

If a hare is one of the worst shots with a gun, then it just shows how appropriately you named him

I'm curious to see what the two latest armatures will become. I don't know what the choices are, but the head of the big one looks lupine so far.

No wolves in the game however it would be possible and entertaining to invent stats for a massive sized lone Wolf warrior. A massive hound is an option so maybe just some skills or bonuses added to that.

Options for massive size creatures are Badgers, Beavers, Hounds, Birds, Raptors (birds of prey)

Nothing the size of a donkey or a deer or a bear in the game so far. I think Threa maybe a refference to a legend about a bear in the fluff but not the playable rules.

That's exactly right Syro_

I'm aiming to have the frog in a leading axe strike pose with a one handed axe above his head in his right hand. I'm struggling with costume though as I want to keep his proportions and body shape from being distorted with too many skirts and tails and sleeves and things and I want something suitably savage without him being a naked axe wielding maniac.

Badger will be Sledgee's boxing rival. I'm going for chain wrapped fists and a fierce looking face. Shorts and maybe a towel around his shoulders. I hadn't decided on the arm position but now I have the frame filled out its becoming easier to visualise where to place them.

Update for the days progress.

more arms have been applied all round. I drill the milliput, apply a bit of paperclip wire bent into the right shape, and then build on that with more milliput. They've also seen some greenstuff. Badger got his shorts and big old weight-lifting belt. Froggy got some super skinny fit trousers and a fringe jacket. I think maybe he's going for the Robert Plant look. Let the Zeppelin pun frog names commence.

Trampled under foot would’ve worked for Tommy, but I’m all out of Zeppelin ideas for these guys’ names. They look cool anyways, maybe a Gangs of New York or Rocky theme for the boxing badger? Clubber perhaps or Drago?

Post by: theCrowe

Thanks tzurk, thanks gobert. Not sure we're there with the Sep name yet. I have a simple one but I'm still hoping for better.

Not a huge amount of progress today, or maybe just not very exciting progress. Important none the less. Badger's legs got fur and froggy got hands, a shield from my bits box and a little bag. (On the other side! Silly me)

A few steps closer at least.

So next I thought I might try something a bit different.

I wanted to make a running rabbit (because Watership Down is the greatest rabbit book ever and it teaches that to a rabbit running is life.)
So I drew this idea and have sketched out the expected wire frame in red. I'm going to attempt to document the wire frame building process in more detail this time if I can. Expect more pics for a step by step and hopefully we'll end up with a similar and not too big running rabbit mini.

Sculpting Update

Froggy is done. I had thought maybe Ribbit Plant. I don't super love it, happy if anyone can think of better. Happy with the sculpt at any rate.
And badger (can anyone think of a boxer name badger pun?) got hairier.

Frog looks good, and Ribbit Plant is indeed an amusing name, though possibly better for a spy frog. Only thing I can think of for the badger is Tyson Furry, but that's not really a badger pun.

theCrowe sculpts anthro animals for Burrows & Badgers, Taking to the skies! @ 2021/01/09 22:00:09

Post by: theCrowe

Tyson Furry! That is it! Thanks Vejut.

I'll not bore yous with another picture of a slightly more furry badger. His arms are done with wrapped fists, so at this point it's just his head left to do.

Instead, as promised. Here's the step by step wire frame rabbit.
I started off with a paper clip opened out and gave the lower foot a good couple of cm to go into the cork. The bend traces the shape of the leg up into a loop around the top of the thigh and back into the pelvis.

It goes into a tight loop at the centre of the pelvis and comes out of the loop going up the spine and finishes with a wider double loop to form the shoulders.

That's paperclip 1.

So next I took another paperclip and looped it around the pelvis loop with a little poking up to be the bunny tail. The long end comes out from the centre to wide the pelvis before bending forward into the leg shape. I gave enough for a good long rabbit foot and snipped the rest off.

I added some superglue to hold the joint in place and that's paperclip 2.

Next I took a piece of wire to form the arms. Starting from one end I made a bend for the elbow of the right arm held forward an another bend going perpendicular into the shoulder. The length of wire goes across to the other shoulder and bends back down and then has a shallower angle for the elbow of the rearward held left arm.

[url=https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1091787-.html]
As you can see it's much more simple than that description suggests. That wire slides into the shoulder loop of paperclip 1 and is glued into place. That's wire 3.

Then I eyeballed the figure against the last "rabbit" I made (which turned out to be the size of a hare) and discovered that this one was heading toward too big territory again. So I pressed the right leg into the cork more. Snipped a bit off the other limbs and repositioned them a bit. Then I put a link in the spine and shortened it.

Now he's about the right size.

Then for the head. Another paperclip bent double and twisted together. The loop is bent into a rough bunny head shape and the ears have a little bit of waviness.

Finally, a little loop around the twist and a spike to hold it on.

The ears might be a bit long but I can snip them down if I need to. Better that than have to build on extra support later.
So that's it then, we're ready for milliput.

And really cool to see the "tutorial" on the rabbit, really fascinating to see the method behind the sculpting.

Thanks Viterbi. I know it's a bit unconventional and steel wire isn't the most forgiving to work with. It can sometimes get overworked and will just snap which can be frustrating. But I tried Tim wire and couldn't handle how much softer and less rigid it was.

So on with progress for tonight.

So here's the bunny runner with the milliput on.
I used to think of this stage as just filling space to save greenstuff but more and more I'm finding its the time when I really set the shape of the mini. It's this stage that I can see the full form come together over the wire skeleton. Bulking out some areas and leaving wire exposed if I feel like the frame is actually setting the limit for as big as I want to go. I can also see where the wire needs adjusting, bending or cutting if necessary.
I've also found the more wire I can cover with milliput the better as greenstuff doesn't really like to sit on bare wire and will move around a lot while you're trying to sculpt something like a proper dog-leg shape.
Anyway. You'll see the ears are absolutely huge. I expect I'll file them down a bit to get a cleaner rounder shape if I can but I do like the great big ears.

Also...

Tyson Furry has a head and a face and looks fit for a fist fight. I had a notion I might give him a hood, like some kind of Undertaker entrance costume. I'll see how he looks painted up though. I suspect his nice stripy badger face will not be improved by hiding it under a WWE gimmick.

The bunny runner is looking cool so far! I like the action filled pose and the big ears. I like your thought process about not needing to cover every bit of the wire, I'll have to try to think that way.

Tyson Furry looks great too, and I agree that it's probably better to see his striped head without a hood.

Thanks Syro. It's funny the things people find useful, like the thing about the exposed wire. Glad you got something out of it. Lookig at his head I'm thinking I'll maybe take some snips to his snout too, it's a bit long for a rabbit I think.
Milliput is great. It's strong enough to hold shape but easy to break or drill or sand if you need to. Honestly the whole shape is there on the rabbit at this stage and the greenstuff is almost just a skin on top that I can texture and add detailed features to. I find the thicker the layer of greenstuff the more it moves and bulges out of shape.

Anyway, Update for tonight.

These three have got proper bases and are all ready for the spray primer.

And always doubling up on the sculpting jobs.

Bunny's got some green and a new mystery mini has appeared! I tend to have two on the go at once so that if I finish doing part of one and want to stop working on it (so I don't accidentally smoosh the bit I've just sculpted) but I have a bit of mixed greenstuff left over, I can move onto the other one and do a little bit there. Or if I'm just bored of one I'll maybe have more interest in the other. Anyway, I'll let you have a guess at what it is as usual.

And then lastly I've finally gotten this fella painted at last.

He's a sparrowhawk so the name has to be Ged.

From the back he looks like a different bird.

But honestly it's the same mini.

That's me for now. Sadly no side by side comparison this time as I've not got anyone new painted up. Maybe next time. If I recall I've missed painting a weasel sculpt that I can show side by side with an Oathsworn weasel too. And I have a couple or Skaven in base colours already so they're close to showing too. So lots more still to come for this project in 2021.

Work on this guy is progressing well

I decided this might be a perfect opportunity to have someone with a sling.

In his other hand he's holding a rather large stone. To sling.
Still the head to do. As ever the last part. You can see I've snipped his nose down into a more lapine shape.

No guesses as to what the other sculpt is going to be?

I suppose it's a bit of an oddity as its one of the strangest but cutest things in Burrows & Badgers. But if you'd never seen it amongst the range you'd never guess.

Here's the progress shot.

It's a Shrew Knight Errant riding a stag beetle! Not an easy one to guess that.

Thanks AT. I could buy one... But then I could make one too.

It's coming together now. Few more details on the beetle's head and lots more work on the shrew still to go. And the lance will be fun. I started this one a bit differently. The first thing was the blob of milliput that then had all the wire legs etc added to it and covered in greenstuff. (After me saying I don't like to do that. Apparently sometimes I do)

The fastest rabbit in Watership Down (honestly a fantastic book, so highly recommended. No animated adaptation has ever really got it right. Well worth the read.) is called Dandylion. So that's the name I'm going with.
You can't really see his big ears in this pic but I wanted to show the little rabbit icon on his tabard.

Progress for tonight.

Armour is building piece by piece slowly into a full suit. The head is already too large and misshapen so I'll have to apply some judicious snippage before I try and make an armoured shrew face, however that goes. And the lance looks like needs filed down more too. I'm finding this one very tricky but trying hard not to let him get oversized.

Thanks for the comments and encouragement guys. Yeah, I'm pleased with the energy in Dandylion's pose, though compared to my Oathsworn rabbit he's actually pretty bulky, almost as big as Elmer really. But he's staying on a 30mm base for a rabbit. (For now) I think maybe my wire armitures are too detailed in their curves etc and it's making them overly large. I'm still struggling with the smaller size of the shrew and think maybe he's a little short for a knight but he's coming along.

In the meantime, some painted minis.

Nothing fancy, just these two. Man these are horrible minis to paint. I can't imagine the misery of painting a whole Skaven army! Sheesh, massive props to anyone who ever achieved that particular feat of endurance. i had another couple of Heroquest Skaven incoming from eBay but they got lost in the post. Not even sad about that. I'd still be happy if they showed up one day but honestly I think I'm done adding Skaven to my Burrows & Badgers collection.

Right, I’m sorry, but now you need to do a six fingered enemy for Inigo and The Dread Pirate Roberts! Fun fact, Inigo is played by the same bloke that played Saul in Homeland. By the power of the beard I hardly recognised him!

Awesome work as ever, the beetle is definitely giving the Labyrinth voodoo, who do? You do! And now it’s stuck in my head!

I'm really enjoying all the Princess Bride fun. It's actually the single greatest movie of all time. Utterly perfect in every way. Even if it is a kissing story.

I knew that about Mandy Pitinkin, (Potempkin? Not the battleship, though that's another classic movie) but I only knew from being a big Homeland fan too. But anyway, another fun fact, Vizini, (Inconceivable!) that's the same guy that does the voice for Rex the Dinosaur in Toy Story! What a talent. And "Just one more thing..." Peter Faulk!

Anyway...

Slow but steady progress. I found a sword that was just right so I didn't have to sculpt one. (Not my strong suit!) So he's armed and he has hands and his head is on and mostly done. He just needs some ears and some eyeballs and maybe a few accessories and he's done. Ready to avenge the death of his father.
You know I'm almost tempted to give him a domino mask.

The princess bride is one of my favorite movies of all time too. My sisters and i used to recreate scenes in our backyard, which... mainly meant the fencing and the fire swamp.

As for the figures themselves, what can i say but that they're dashing examples of rabbit kind!

Yes I thought I'd bit of fun with a proof of concept dry-fit. The arm looks a bit on the large side and I'm hoping to be able to position it a bit higher for a proper straight back, shoulder hight pistol duelling pose. I'll shave the plastic down a bit and pin it into the milliput once I have a better idea of the position I need.

That sounds like a happy time. Sadly I only came to it later in life, my youth being misspent on Thundercats.

So here it is (Merry Christmas?) fully sculpted and ready for a base.

I like his little face. Determined but loving the challenge. And his little quilted vest is very cute. I thought about giving him a scabbard but then, do you ever see when a mini has a scabbard that suits their shape and looks right on their side by when you compare it to the actual sword in their hand it clearly isn't big enough? I think it's a heroic scale issue and I can see why it would happen but it bugs the heck out of me. So I didn't go there.

Pistol bunny is at milliput stage and spoiling for some green. (And presumably also satisfaction for his besmirched honour.)

Shrewboy came out looking brilliant! I am so impressed by how quickly you churn through these little guys.

Agreed about the scabbard scaling issues - same thing happens with pistol holsters! He seems the dapper sort of fellow anyway that would just slip it into a ring around his belt.

Can't wait to see bang bang rabbit come to life

No holster here! I filed down the arm and set it in but I've found I'll have to reposition the wrist so as to have the sights at eye level. It doesn't help that I decided to give him a high starched shirt collar and cravat! Those noble bunnies are simply slaves to fashion.
I'll let everything set first though before getting choppy on the arm. Then it's waistcoat time.

I read that while deloping article. Very interesting. I'd never heard of it as a thing before. I had imagined what with all the honour and machismo at stake thy sort of thing would be frowned upon. But of course a gentleman must always have room for mercy and a poor shot with a bruised ego must always have plausible deniability.
And yes, in the context of rabbits, deloping sounds like somethin to do with removing ears!

Speaking of which, look what's behind his back!

Maybe he is planning some deloping after all.

Syro_ wrote:The duelist turned out great. I agree about "proper" describing him perfectly, something about his posture really screams "proper".

Thanks Syro. Glad that character trait is coming through. I suppose pistol duelling was more or less exclusive to the upper crust. Only a proper gentleman rabbit would be up to this sort of thing.

gobert wrote:Nice one! He looks to have a bit of a moustache going on for that proper gentlemanly vibe.

Yes he does. It's always surprising how a bit of an anthro facial hair feature will either suit an animal face or
completely alter it. I tried something like this on one of my weasels and he came out really weird and dog-like. I've actually yet to show him painted up. Not my finest work but I've still to finish painting his comparison mini. (Who I gave a yellow coat I didn't like) Anyway, glad you're enjoying the bunny stache.

Viterbi wrote:Really love the hidden dagger behind the duelist, great idea and execution.

Thanks Viterbi. It was partially game-rules inspired. There are cunning skills including one that allows your mini to sneak attack which I liked the idea of. Then the other thing is that black powder weapons are temperamental and another weapon about his person would likely come in handy. But the idea he should be doing the honour thing with his pistol hand and the dishonourable thing with the other behind his back just appealed to me.

And of course a new sculpt is on the way.

I'm having trouble finding a suitable two handed weapon for this guy. I had a big ork axe from an old GorkaMorka set but it's far too chunky and looks really off. I may have to make one! Which I don't really like doing but then I should probbably stretch myself.

This will be Big Wig. The only other Watership Down Rabbit i have in mind after this will be Fiver, so a mystical magic rabbit mini for him. Then I'll be done with rabbits I think. Looking forward to the big rabbit paint up and showcase.

Thanks gobert. Unfortunately no green on him at all yet. Spent the evening building this.

Perfect for a little watchtower archery action. The game features some pretty heavy penalties and bonuses where movement rules are concerned particularly where vertical movement comes into play so I hope this piece will play into that well. It can fit 4 30mm bases, a 40mm and two 30mm bases or one 50mm base. It can only be accessed from one side unless with a rope and hook or by a flier. Looking forward to getting it painted up and in play.

Thanks T-Horde. It's a game that I hoped would appeal a bit more to my kids. The whole grimdark thing is waring a little thin with me the last few years and I've been quite taken with Mike Lovejoy's magical world of critters of all sizes in medieval England-like setting. He's obviously put so much love and energy and work into making it and bringing it to life it's just inspired me to jump in win both feet. And just to be clear, the Shrew Knofht Errant concept is original to Mike Lovejoy's game. I just sculpted my own version. It's a genius idea and so unique to this game. I'm planning on buying an original one and then making one more and having a royal cavalry warband.

And also, thanks for the good housekeeping. Very kind.

More WIP Burrows & Badgers terrain on the make tonight.

Here follows a long and dull account of my previous efforts at B&B terrain with WIP pics. If you're here for the mini sculpting maybe skip it.
Spoiler:

It occurs to me that I never shows the first lot of stuff I made last lockdown. I took WIP pictures but never finished ones.
The Campfire.

It's a little camp area with a drystone wall along one side and some baggage up against it.

The Hilltop Burrow

This is my own version of a piece available from Oathsworn of a similar design. A little path leading to a round door in the top of a little hill. There's a rocky drop off the back end with some bushes on top to make it more difficult terrain.

Then there's the Door.

Another of my takes on an official piece of comparable design. We've seen Tommy pounding on this one already. It's a rocky hill up the back which could be climbed by a nimble beast. Though I haven't tried balancing anyone up there yet. Not really anywhere to go once you're up there. It's maybe just more of a big obstacle. Or a door to hide in? I could make rules for that.

I also made a large log pile. But didn't snap a pic. It's climbable and a good size to hide behind and has a 30mm gap for littleuns to slip through unhindered where bigger beasts will have to roll for nimbleness. But it's just some twigs cut to length and glued in a couple of stacks on a board.
And then I started making a Hedgee's house but I need some foamboard really. It's not working. I see all these beautiful quaint little village houses and inns folks make and think I should do that. But then I realise it's a bit hard with just card and balsa and wood chips. Oathsworn sell a whole range of things similar to these so I could shell out if I wanted a couple of proper houses.

I've got some stone watchtowers and a couple of ruined buildings I could use too soooo maybe I don't need cute little houses with roofs that come off and let you have a look at who's inside with nice little kitchen gardens out the back and window boxes and fences.

Sorry no sculpting progress to show. I've been attempting to mold and reproduce a copy of Gimli's axe for my next bunny but it's proving a bit tricky.

Glued a couple of little ice cream tubs together and that was the shape of things for a little grain silo. Then I had this orange plastic roof from an old toy that just needed some posts and that'll be a coal shed.

Glad everyone's enjoyed the terrain WIP pics. It's been a very productive weekend and I've managed to throw some paint on the new builds and some flock and all sorts too. I've added these newly finished pieces to the collection along with the ones I did earlier and thrown them all on table for a little photo shoot for you all.
Hope you enjoy these little scenes even if my crummy phone photos arnt the best. I rock the tabletop Oldschool with a green felt Sobbuteo pitch and Hornby model railway trees.

A fight breaks out over a promising bit of plunder in a ruined tower.

Mr Mole comes above ground to see who it is that's kicking his coal shed to bits.

The landlord sends in the bailiff to evict an unfortunate tenant.

A winner is declared in the annual shrewzerker wood chopping championship.

The royalists are on the warpath but they forgot to check the coal shed for ambushing lizards!

A band of brigands tell spooky stories around the campfire.

A pair of guards await their lady as she conducts her business within.

A pair of wealthy foxes on the road with their minions are waylaid by outlaws from the woods.

Two warbands clash at the old village well.

Thanks for indulging my little playtime. I thought it might be a nice opportunity to see some of the collection in their natural habitat.

Lots still to do here, at least a dozen or more minis in grey primer awaiting some attention with a paintbrush. Not to mention the many painted minis whose bases need finishing.

And of course I can't help meself when it comes to sculpting more and taking any excuse to buy more of my favourite originals too. No end in sight for this project.

Coney the Rabarian! Excellent pun work there. Sadly he's still not waring muc as no more progress has been made.

I've only bought this fella off eBay

Slapped a shield and a new base on him and thrown him in the box as is. Total shortcut to one more rat for the collection. At least he has some vintage gaming heritage credibility.

For now I'll have to settle for this. Not so much of an update as a statement of intent.

That axe is way too big but it's the kind of thing I'm going for.

Also, I've been up to all sorts tonight hobbying like a man possessed and have unearthed this creature from the mists of time.

No how to turn him into a whimsical lizard fellow for this project? With tones of greenstuff and a flash of inspiration of course... Anyone got a lightning rod I could borrow?

I'm really looking forward to what you will do to make your lizard fellow. I'm guessing a lot of work on the face if you are going for whimsical rather than scary and aggressive. I think the over sized axe suits the Rabarian (Why not bunbarian?), barbarians are know for their large strength and the large weapons they wield with that strength.

Yeah... I'm not a big fan of the lizard man Saurus. He's in a horrible blocky pose. My initial enthusiasm having plucked him from obscurity is perhaps be in replaced by whatever I felt when I bannished him there in the first place. Not super keen. I'll check the stats for green lizards and see if I have any ideas.

Meanwhile back in the warren.

It looks like I'm making another exact copy of that same axe, but trust me, I plan on it being a bit smaller and finer. I'm not a huge fan of sculpting weapons but I need to practice so I'm making another slightly different axe head at the same time. Maybe I'll like it better.

Some proper work on Coney the Bunnybarian tonight,

Clothes at last! Or a leather strappy loin cloth at the least. And speaking of Classic barbarian fashions.

Check out the lion belt! Pretty chuffed with that I must say. Looking forward to hitting it with some 90s shining gold with a splash of flesh wash. All he needs now is some furry boots and leather forearm thingies and he'll be as fully dressed as a bunnybarian would ever want to be.

The axe is coming along. If you ever wondered what a mix of and brown stuff looks like that's it. It's not very strong which is disappointing. Prob should've used green or more brown. Or both.

Cat head belt does indeed look good, as does the axe. To be honest, if strength was a concern on it, I'd be tempted to start with wire coat hanger cut to length for the handle, and 2mm or laid up thicker plasticard filed down to shape for the blade, then do detail with the putty, but not sure how you'd do the join..

theCrowe sculpts anthro animals for Burrows & Badgers, Taking to the skies! @ 2021/02/17 21:09:56

Post by: theCrowe

Yeah I have some 0.5mm plasticard that I could layer with some wire in between. And try to smooth the rough edges and detail in putty. Already there with both axe options though so not too bothered. (Until they break!) Anyway, this is why I'm lucky to have lots of spare weapons in my bits box. Just no barbarian battle axes.

Two votes for axe number one (and mine as well if I'm honest) puts Choppy McChopFace in the hands of Coney the Bunnybarian.

One more sculpt in mind to complete the rabbit warband and then there's the Frankenlizard... Haven't gotten any further with that I'm afraid.

Nice one theCrowe! Coney looks great, what colours do you have in mind? Wild rabbit or some pure breed pet?

I think because they're all quite different I'll maybe go for wild rabbit colours on all of them to tie the warband together a bit. I've been doing lots of other stuff lately and the B&B sculpting has slowed right down. I do see lots of painted minis coming to this blog soon though.

Thanks Robert, you're very kind.

Been trying to get some painting done but it's been slow going between projects to fix the house up to sell.

Ribbet Plant got a lick of paint.

Not sure he's really finished but it's close enough for rock and roll.

Here follows a rant on basing and photography.
Spoiler:

I always wonder if I shouldn't get the basing done before I take these pics. I plan on batch basing at some point. I'll take a selection that need doing and give them a similar treatment but different to the last lot so they're not all alike in the end. I've done some in a flowery meadow theme and some in a green undergrowth looking thing already. I could also do autumn leaves or a wilder looking rocky weeds theme.

I always plan on takin some glamour shots of the whole lot with the big camera at the end of the project but then my old computer has died and it had Photoshop Lightroom on there so without that my big camera can't get photos into Dakka so easily. So in the meantime a phone snap against my grey kitchen tiles in the glow of the under cupboard lighting is the most convenient and functional light box option.

And then I made a half hearted start on my last rabbit.

Going for a classic wizard look with a Gandalf hat for this guy. He will be Fiver of course in the Watership Down themed warband but for now Wizard rabbit name is up for grabs.

The cat belt is excellent. The froggy's coat is neat, too.
Can't think of any good rabbit wizard names.

Nice Frog, and base is done enough to not be too noticable.

Hoping to see more on the Bunnincanabula when the mood strikes you.

A belated vote for the axe head that you picked in the end, it looks great, as does your sculpt.

I think the frog looks good too and I wouldn't worry about completing the basing. If your style is to go through and base everything after then work with that. It'll keep things uniform too.

Ribbit Plant! Love it! He looks very smart and another good addition to the collection. As for the bases, I think tying each warband together by their basing would work well

Crowe,

Ribbet Plant must have a special "leap" ability.

Thanks Jazzy. Not to worry you'll have plenty of time for inspiration to strike.

Viterbi wrote:Bunnybarian is so cool and I loved the "I have a plan" comment for the poor dismembered lizard pic

Thanks Vit. It's a plan growing all the more dubious the longer I leave it.

Vejut wrote:Nice Frog, and base is done enough to not be too noticable.

Not a bad effort if I could say it Vej. Think it may be opportunity more than mood at this stage.

Thanks T Horde. I had done some batches of basing before and I'll likely do it again. Not too worried with uniformity as I like the variety this game offers.

gobert wrote:Ribbit Plant! Love it! He looks very smart and another good addition to the collection. As for the bases, I think tying each warband together by their basing would work well

Thanks gobert. I had planned on that sort of thing at one point but then I expect there will be a pretty fluid shifting around and no two warbands made will ever likely all have the same base type. Players will only ever have a handful of characters on the board at once so remembering who's who shouldn't require uniform bases, nice though it might look.
I'll likely do all the rabbits the same at least.

Captain Brown wrote:Crowe,

He does! At least the rules give frogs the leap ability. So that's perfect.

So as I've hinted already I'm not likely to have any hobby time to get any further on this project for a while as everything is packed up preparing to move house! (Yikes!) So it may be a few months yet before I can get out the putty or the paint brushes. I'll still have my phone to write fiction and I may even doodle a sketch here and there but sadly not much more. I'll still be around dakka enjoying all your projects vicariously and you'll see me about no doubt. Looking forward to getting back to it all again when I can.

Good luck with the move, it’s always a stressful time in my experience. Are you moving far or staying near the Castle and the great play park?

Thanks gobert, not too far hopefully. keeping the boys in the same school would be the plan. Just need to find a house for sale that ticks all the boxes (or enough of them) but we need to be ready to jump when the time comes.

I'd like to measure the volume of boxes to see how large my entire collection is. Honestly it's a bit of a bad joke.

Wish I could be making a grander more triumphant return to Dakka but I’m still up to my neck in white emulsion, rollers and skirting boards and grout! But hey, everyone needs to take a break sometimes to relax so I managed to sneak this one in tonight.

First with the wire frame as always. Taking a break from the rabbits to have some fun with this.

Can you guess what it is before I move on to the milliput?
Spoiler:

He’s a sneaky snake disguising itself in a handy scarecrow.

So good to get a sculpting tool in my hand again. Can’t wait to reach for the greenstuff at my next opportunity. Hopefully before Christmas!
Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks everyone. Glad to back at it. So much so that I’m back with a progress update already! Once I started back at it I just couldn’t stop.
So I’ve gotten some green on the snake as would seem appropriate.

He’s coming along nicely. The snake skin is a bit rough but then it was the last time too.
dakkadakka

Then I haven’t completely abandoned the last of the rabbit band. He got some milliput and has begun to take shape.

I had some greenstuff left over and mixed some into the milliput (gross!) it helped to strengthen around the feet and mostly made up the base for the head and hat.

The snake looks amazing theCrowe, I don't consider it rough. Nice progress on the rabbit as well. I'm looking forward to seeing it as it progresses.

Thanks Syro_ I really need to get a better photo set-up together. It’s hard to see the detail on the greens (rough or otherwise)

Quick update of the weekend’s progress.

Snake is almost done, not much left for him. The magic rabbit is coming on leaps and bounds... so to speak.

Thanks gobert. I do love when a good idea comes out right. Might even be possible to paint him in time for Halloween!

Anyway, here he is, Sneaky scarecrow snake is done!

Though, in burrows and badgers world what a crow would find so scary about a scarecrow I don’t know. Best not to think about it too much.

I love the idea of this even if it makes no sense.

Bundalf is coming along slowly.

I was hoping to find something for a crystal ball for him but I just set this milliput one in temporarily to work on him. I’ll replace it with a glass one later.

Then it should come as no surprise but...

I GOT A FEVER!

AND THE ONLY CURE IS MORE GREENSTUFF!!!

Ha! I love that you added a pumpkin to the base, though I think that means it needs to be painted before Halloween! Bundalf is coming along well, hopefully you can rescue a small bead from your kids

Unfortunately my kids don’t really like beads... apparently I can get some 4mm glass balls off eBay. It appears people use them in sling shots? Seriously? Who’s doing that? To what end? Glass! Seriously? Don’t they realise they’re wasting perfectly good tiny miniature crystal balls?

Painting tonight. No photos yet. I’ve entered the monthly painting challenge for October with the scare-snake but I’m eyeing up that other snake i’m making too and thinking it could be a vampire snake!

The last of my rabbit warband, Bundalf the trusty seer and magician is now finished.

Just have to bang him on a base and blast him with primer and I’ll have the full set ready for paint.

And then the surprising turn toward snakes continues with this fella getting some facial features and a spooky boney base.

All he needs now is a vampire cape and I’ll be adding him into my painting challenge Halloween entry.

And not content with just a simple snake I’ve embarked upon an attempt at making a large skeleton snake!

Haven't really thought the thing through yet. At the minute he’s just a big green spring. And I suspect the ribs will be a bit of a faff but I’m looking forward to seeing how he’ll turn out.

No further progress on the new shrew Knight but I’ve ordered a real one for my birthday so I’ll maybe wait to use that as a size guide. Also ordered a few more wonderful Oathsworn originals to keep the project grounded in the B&B setting as I go along.

One vampire snake primed and ready to paint for this months challenge.

The big skelly snake is coming along too. Lots of wire ribs going on. Very freaky looking so far. But I don’t think he’ll make it to be painted in time for halloween.

Bundalf looks good, though I admit I get more Cottontail Mather from him--I think its the angle, making the robe lowers look kind of like poofy wrap pants though, plus the collar. Still a fun, characterful sculpt. Also loving the snakes! Do snake vampire fangs work both ways, I wonder?

I can’t recommend this method of making a large skeleton snake.

But I continue regardless. A very messy sculpt. It’ll take some tidying up as I go along.

Wider project news- Did a lot of bases tonight in a nice autumnal forest floor theme.

I’m planning a few shots to show the scale of my ever-growing B&B collection, and what’s still to paint. And maybe then I’ll have a think about what’s missing and what I should be sculpting next.
