So what are your AoS plans for 2021? @ 2021/01/01 11:17:41

Post by: ccs

Oh thank God, 2020 is finally done!

So, that was a long 365 days..... Yeah yeah, I know today looks very much like yesterday did. Nothing magically changed at midnight.
But on the assumption 2021 will get better, what's your AoS goals for this year?

Mine:
1) Get our next Path to Glory campaign up & running. Target time frame: Jan/Feb.

2) Build & paint up a Chaos Marauder?/Dark Elf? Maybe Idoneth? slaver/raider force. Along with a village + villagers & a small CoS defense force.
This is aimed at being more of a mass battle scenario for use in our D&D game than just an AoS project, so I'm undecided on the enemy raiding force atm. The BBEG (who's not actually present in the battle) has sent out his raiders to capture as many villagers as possible for his dastardly plan (wich the PCs will ultimately have to foil). Different VPs for different types of villagers/defenders captured/saved.
It'll also serve as an AoS demo game for the shop. The one I did last year Goblins invading "The valley of the Druids" (CoS/Sylvanth alliance) went quite well. Furthered our D&D game and drew in two new players to AoS/40k. So let's do it again!
Target time frame: June(?)

3) Play more AoS games than I did in 2020.

Painting and modelling wise
A) Finish my nurgle daemons.
B) Finish my Beastmen
B) Paint up my Stormcast Elementals (Bascially the stormcast start collecting with Stone, Ice, Fire and Lightning themed minis)
C) Finish my Wood Elves (would be my first ever completed elf force!)
D) Finish magnetising and then paint up my Lizardmen (I have the start collecting and the christmas box from a while ago, but I want to magnetise all the beasties so I can use them on their own in Dungeons and Dragons without the skinks or saurus riding them!)

I think if I got that done, I would be happy painting wise. I also have some Slaves to Darkness and an Island of Blood set I wouldn't mind getting finished, but that is definitely a lower priority. Wrath and Rapture might be a sudden dark horse if I can get over my previous bloodletter assembly trauma.

Gaming wise:
A) Play some games with my Beastmen, hopefully vs. Wood Elves or Stormcast.
B) Play a siege game using my ringfort I made last year!
Depending on how the vaccine rollout goes I might get a lot more games in this year as I can bring my stuff with me in my car for games now that I have got a few different armies for people to use and a couple of terrain sets for battlefields.

Scenery wise:
A) Make some rocky crags and fungal forest terrain for an "underway" board or just a rocky badland board.
B) Make some mesoamerican ruins for my jungle terrain set.
C) Make a herdstone or corrupted tree as a centrepiece for my beastmen.
D) Make some generic ruins with wooden floors for fantasy games. I think I want to try magnetising them so they can flatpack as well...

My terrain is really coming along, my "dark ages temperate" setting is pretty much done but for some river sections and I am getting a decent bunch of bits made.

I plan to continue to work on painting up my Slaves to Darkness army. I don't necessarily think I will finish it this year (Archaon still awaits being built), but forward progress is progress. I still have a few Warcry cultists I want to get for the army. I know they aren't very good, but the models look nice and are fun to paint to me.

Put real effort into painting my Lumineth army. I also don't know if I will finish it this year, but I would like to get it to my minimum tabletop standard before I start gaming again would be nice.

As of now, I plan on using 2021 to focus on my 40k stuff more than my AoS stuff. I do think it is possible I can get everything done this year, but I don't know what new releases might catch my fancy or become wants to add to my existing armies. So I don't want too much pressure and turn my hobby into work. Outside Lumineth already getting an expansion, I don't really see any of my major factions I play getting much this year. So that will allow some breathing room. I also doubt I will be starting a full army of anything this year as well. If I do, it will be something crazy easy to paint like Necrons or Stormcast Enternals. I also don't plan on working on any commissions this year. So I can focus on my stuff that I have already.

I've just started, really. Always loved old Vampire Counts, so I've gotten into Death. Going for Legions of Nagash and Flesh-Eater Courts. Have a bunch of stuff I've assembled over the past couple of weeks, hope to paint up 2k points of each this year.

Sell off the stuff I don’t use.

Possibly start another army.

And then any lizardman models that GW might churn out.

After that I'll be on the look out for human mortals of any variety, though I will always hope for a darkoath barbarian release.

1) Paint up the old and damaged Kroq-Gar model that I salvaged and restored from a friend's collection I inherited. This will be the centrepiece for my Seraphon army.
2) Paint up the 10 saurus warriors and 10 skinks I already own.
3) Get the skinks start collecting force and paint up my first 500-1000pt force of seraphon.
4) Create a display board for the army.
5) Create a few matching pieces of lizardmen themed terrain including a ziggurat.
6) When it is finally safe to do so again: learn to play AOS and get some games under my belt.

- Get a SC-box to bump the Gits i got from the battleforce to 2000
- Get a SC-box for FEC because they look cool and have awesome fluff. With the Warcry box I got for them I have around 1000 points, which I hope is playable.
- Use said FECs and my Beastmen to get a friend to try out the game with me.
- For the painting side, maybe prime my WoCs? I know I'm slow with that stuff

A) think you are being optimistic with that unless you mean 2 battlefore i have 2k with battleforce, box of hoppers, 2 manglers and sc plus herder box
B) i got 750pts with sc and box of ghouls. Again 1k feels optimistic.

I may end up branching into Slaanesh. The ability to dual purpose the armies is really appealing to me, though this will be later in the year.

Other than that, I'm pretty content with my AoS collection right now, and will just generally just add things to the armies I already own as they come out. It's going to have to be something really eye catching to have me consider making a possible 6th army.

I'm a big fan of small, 500-1000 point narrative armies. With that in mind, I want to:
-Finish my 500 points of Idoneth, maybe expand to 1000
-500 points of Sylvaneth?
-500 points Ossiarch Bonereapers
-500 points Flesh-eater courts
-Start Collecting! Slaves to darkness (550 points)

While not explicitly AoS, my goal this year is to paint a Warband for Warhammer Underworlds each month.
So far I have:
-Ylthari's Guardians
-Myari's Purifiers
-The Dread Pageant
-Mollog's Mob
-Most of the Wurmspat

I've thankfully already based and painted my Orruk Warclans army back in 2020, so they're largely a finished project. At best, I still have some old school Orc Archers and a Wardokk if I want to dip into some ranged Savage Orruk goodness for my army, so that might be what I'll be doing.

I have, however, just recently finished two of my grot warbands for underworlds. Meaning I've now fully painted all my greenskin warbands for Underworlds! This includes the new Mogrok's Krushas,

The only one for me that's missing is Mollog's Mob, but that's partly because it's out of stock.

Honestly I'm tempted to start up some Gloomspite Gitz after seeing the new WD rules for a squig-heavy army. Can anyone tell me how that's doing ruleswise? I know GG are generally not in a great spot in terms of competitiveness atm, but as far as models go, they're definitely one of the top armies IMO.

Spoiler:

I have quite literally this evening just bought the Maggotkin of Nurgle book, with the SC and GUO and one of the trees. Not really played AOS before, although I do have painted up a SC Nurgle demons and some Chaos Knights.
I'm in a new gaming club who, whilst predominantly being 40k has a handful of members who play AOS upto about 1000pts so it seemed like a good opportunity to give it a go.

Fully plan on going down the classic Chaos Warband route for the Army with Beastmen, Skaven, marauders and random Chaos monsters. I want to build the Chaos warband I imagined as a youth back in the 80s. Dedicated of course to Papa Nurgle. I have absolutely no interest in competition, tournaments or min maxing, just purely playing for the fun of it and enjoying some painting and conversions.

Really looking forward to it.

I going to jump into AOS this year. I have squig hoppers, a gargant, and stone trolls from my orc and goblin army. After I rebase the trolls I will pick up a unit or two night goblins so my fanatics will have a unit to travel in. After that I will grab the goblin terrain piece (can't remember the name right now). I guess grabbing some rules will help after that.

My plans are simple

1) Work toward "completing" in terms of models my Slaanesh, Daughters of Khaine and Ossiarch forces. Each has a good chunk to add so I can spread things out and GW is making it harder by adding a huge wave of Slaanesh models to the range.

2) Paint SOMETHING to a decent standard.

I'd love to end 2021 with an army painted and three forces in near complete collected and built (save for sub assemblies for painting) state.
Heck Ossiarchs wouldn't be too far off save that I really want to do a full mounted force of Deathriders which, whilst they are elite cavalry, still adds quite a few kits to the build.

Painting the existing armies, maybe adding 8 more leadbelchers to run underguts list.
And hope for an army that catches my eye and isn't impractical (LRL ended up disqualified based on that). I had hopes for SoBs, but they eneded up being just larger, fatter basic giants with zero customizability.

My plans for 2021?
1. Blood Sucking Vampires!
2. Finish Stormcast Eternals
3. Finish Night Haunts
4. Skaven?
5. Daughters of Khane

Vamp's might not happen in 2021 depending on their release and how much GW messes with them. I envision a small, elite army with a lot of powerful Hero's and Wizards that once they start killing enemy models, they can bring them back (summon) them as units of skeletons/zombies/ghouls. Kinda like the way they were in WH Fantasy. We'll see what GW thinks they should be. The Underworlds Warband looks great!

My Stormcast is basically a pet project of winged armor guys throwing lightning from their hammers led by the Celestant-Prime. Not very competitive, but looks really cool.

The Night Haunts... just awesome models all around. If we ever come out of lock down and the FLGS opens up for gaming again... these guys will probably become my main army.

Skaven are a left over army from Warhammer Fantasy. Not sure what I'm going to do with them. They've just really lost something in AoS and I can't put my finger on it. DoK are interesting to me because of the way they play. A lot will depend on what happens in their new book. They are a very synergistic army with a lot of interaction between the units and hero's that I really like!

Something to consider for you vampire-lovers out there is that AoS actually has a good number of plastic Soulblight already, which will no doubt be in the new battletome. Could be a good time to stock up before their related Start Collecting boxes run out:

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Vampire-Counts-Coven-Throne - Also makes Bloodseeker Palanquin (and Mortis Engine, though that is not Soulblight). Also available in:
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Start-Collecting-Malignants

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Start-Collecting-Skeleton-Horde - Only source of the mounted mortarch kit, Mannfred and Neffy are Soulblight.

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Vampire-Lord-on-Zombie-Dragon-2016 - Also makes named Soulblight character Prince Vhordrai.

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Start-Collecting-Flesh-Eater-Courts - Makes the above dragon, the monstrous infantry can be assembled as soulblight Vargheists, and the ghouls are easy to sell off to FEC players.

Quoting myself & updating the plan....

So I've pretty much decided to go with Slaves to Darkness as the attackers for this. Specifically Marauders (how many?), Marauder horse (how many?), the Darkoath characters, the Godsworn Hunt, Kagra's Ravegers, 4-5 chariots & a box of the untamed beasts. And maybe (probably) a wizard.
A pretty Norsca-esque raiding force....

Now I just need to settle on the exact defenders (guess that'll mostly be determined by the StD sides pts value). The goal is to put the CoS forces at a disadvantage but also not cripple them.
Settle some scenario specific rules.
I need to make 40-60some building (mostly houses)
I need the following in 28-32mm building-wise: a Church, a tavern, and a windmill.
Castle walls & gate I've already got.
I also need assorted town dressings.

But the big thing? Is having to paint up about 150++ assorted towns folk - men/women/children.
These will score pts if not captured/killed or if they've fled to the safety of the Church or Fortress (and those're still standing

Tonight (2-2-21) I took the first step in feilding this game: I built the Untamed Beasts.

My goals for AOS this year are:

1) Sell my vanguard stormcasts.

2) Sell my ossiarch bonereapers.

3) Sell either my ironjawz or the sacrosanct.

4) Maybe sell either my ironjawz or the sacrosanct.

I'm quite disulusioned with AOS. haven't played it in a year and a half, in fact (which is quite damning because I've played WHU, infinity and conquest in that time frame). And I found better, more interesting alternatives. I am doubtful I will go back to AOS unless they ditch the ancestral IGO-UGO and the double turn.

Yeah, with the civilians it'll be like painting up 3 armies. And that # of civilians aren't likely to be needed too often otherwise.
And while the major buildings + some of the smaller ones will remain useful, most of the buildings will become redundant.

So I'm looking into ways to cut down the co$t & time as related to the civies & most of the buildings.

I'd like to get some bonereapers since they actual fit into several types of things I've wanted to see for a while. Mainly: Skeletons who aren't just mindless servants, and bone golems who use at least some nonhuman parts. They do have the same issue that all the undead critters of AoS have for me, in that it's all way too about nagash*. But that's a constant with a lot of AoS stuff so I'll just ignore it.

I just want some more friendly skellingtons.

*this is probably best for another topic but i just think nagash is boring.... so very boring.

I like a lot of the Bonereapers aesthetic, I'm just disappointed that they don't have any archers at all.

In a way, I wonder if Maldraxxus in Warcraft was inspired by these guys (or at least, the Legion of Nagash) or not. Warcraft was originally inspired by Warhammer, after all.

Speaking of which, are there ways to create your own Warbands for Warcry from existing armies like Bonereapers? I see a book for them which GW claims will do that.

HAH! Maldraxxus wishes it was OBR.

Also, holy heck someone who actually knows it was Warcraft and not Starcraft.

Bonereapers have some really cool units, but I am not a fan of the basic infantry really. I prefer their big bone construct stuff, it makes more sense to me than these little mini-bone golems.

I played Orcs vs Humans, so it's not hard to see. At least they have been able to make it a largely unique ip between them. Starcraft is obviously inspired by 40K, particularly the Zerg, so I don't know why people would mix up Fantasy with sci-fantasy/space opera.

That's good to hear about Warcry. While some of the Warcry bands seem interesting, it would be better if I could start something I might want to expand in to a larger army later.

I actually really like the basic infantry! I've always liked spear skeletons, and ikind of appreciate that these ones are a bit more solid than the usual.

Narratively, I feel like there could be a lot of creative fun to be had with soldiers who are composed of several fragmented souls. Officially they're supposed to be the ones with the least personality, but i fully intend to ignore that. It's boring.

The bone constructs are a lot of fun too, of course. Who can go wrong with a bone catapult?

Dang it i might really be talking myself into a new project.

Everyone has their preferences. While I kind of preferred the Tomb Kings of old, these are a close second. I think there is enough room in the OBR to take on some of their old constructs and units (like archers and chariots). We'll see if GW agrees with me on that, though, I have some doubts.

Yeah the new Warcry books were a great move, definitely wish I could be using them more but pandemic is bleh.

Starcraft really doesn't draw much from 40k. Especially the early development where it was space battles more analogous to the later release of battlefleet gothic. Like, there is a biological race and a race with psychic powers and... that's it. None of the major themes or setting elements that define 40k are present in Starcraft.

I think you might be mixing things up? Starcraft doesn't have a space-battles game. They do have space ships (a few) but by and large its a ground RTS game.

Starcraft does borrow from 40K in a sense that you've got Space Marines (Marines); Eldar (Protoss) and Tyranids (Zerg). GW even borrows back, the ravener is clearly a take off the hydralisk (ranged snake beast with large curved upper main arms). The second generation even include the same throat/chest weapon that the hydralisk uses. They borrow back and forth all the time; but at the same time a good many features are so generic that its just born of its era as well. Plus don't forget early Tyranids copied the "Alien" for their early hormagaunts.

Also note Starcraft and 40K are very similar in that they are both taking a fantasy combat game and putting it in space (SC even points fun at this with one of the Protoss heroes Artanis in the Broodwar expansion - specifically saying if you click him enough times "This isn't warcraft in space - its much more sophisticated" .

As I said, inspired by. Zerglings and Hormagaunts, Hydralisks and Raveners, Ultralisks and Carnifexes, the Marines. Really, aside from being psykers, Protoss are probably the most unique out of the bunch in comparison, but both 40K and Starcraft take on a lot of sci-fi tropes. And it is also a good thing that the farther that both Starcraft and Warcraft progress, the more unique their IPs become from the Warhammer games.

Early development was closer to Warcraft 2 in space than Battlefleet Gothic, though (which really described early Rogue Trader in many ways).

They actually do. True the support structure is ground-based, but there were maps where you still had to have a decent fleet to progress, and there have been some ship-only custom games as well as campaign games.

Finally, there's an ork army that doesn't look overly simplistic, too cartoony or just boring to me. I mean, don't get me wrong the previous ork armies have looked good... When I'm playing across from them, they've never been something I wanted myself. Diving in deep with Kruleboyz. All my other armies are basically done, bar some niche pieces I haven't got/dont want, so I've got the rest of the year to just work on that.

Eagerly awaiting a print/paint comission on a table scenary set too. Forest elf buildings and what not, should be nice to change tables up from being just Poorpeasantsville or Rocks and Tree land.

So, going into the 2nd half of 2021....

*Things have indeed improved over 2020. So that's a +.
The downside? We've all become busier than ever it seems. Wich leads to:
*So far I've gotten to play a bit less than hoped for.
*The planned PTG/campaign pretty much fizzled.
*Painting of the STD Maurader army is bogged down.
*The D&D senario/Sigmar demo they're planned for is thus delayed (until Aug.(?).

The marauder army PLAYS well at both the 1k & 2k pts lv as a Sigmar force.
Or at least it did until last week when it suffered slight pts changes....

I found a decent mix of good looking & affordable town terrain.

I had a lot of fun piloting a "Grand Alliance: Death" army in the shops escalation league. I ended up with a 3/3 record & 5/6 decent - excellent games.
That 6th game? While it was a hard loss to the Lumineth, what really screwed me was the mission & it's deployment rules.
‐-‐-----‐------------------------------------------

So, revised goals!

*PLAY MORE!
*re-relaunch the PTG/campaign this fall using the new 3e stuff.
*Get that Marauder army project back on track asap
**get that Sigmar demo/narrative/D&D scenario onto the shops table shortly thereafter.

Honestly, probably nothing in AoS this year. At best, I might start collecting models for Warcry to build up to AoS, but it's such an expensive investment, I doubt I'll be able to do much more than that before next year, if even that.

Of course, investment in to Battletech may be taking a higher priority, too.

I spent the first quarter building up my armies, now I'm spending the summer creating the armies.

Plans so far are:

Complete my Lumineth Project (Build + Paint): Current Progress is about 9% of what I have.

Complete my Soulblight Project (Build + Paint): Current Progress is 0% of what I have.

Complete my Orruck Warclans Project (Build + Paint): Current Progress is about 40% of what I have. Might expand to add some Savage Orrucks to the mix, but right now it's IronJawz and Kruelboyz.

Complete my Lizardmen Project (Build + Paint): Current Progress is 0%.

Complete my Stormcast Project (Build + Paint): 0% Progress.

I am planning on starting Sons of Behemet in the Fall.

I'm hoping for new Terrain kits for AoS as I want to build my own table for private games with friends outside of the FLGS.

Otherwise, I'm interested in the rumored Chaos Dwarves, and I really want to pick and start a Chaos faction at some point, but I am not really keen on anything but Slaves to Darkness or the mortal side of Slaanesh with the greater deamons and the twins.

After playing through the Realmgate Wars some time back (https://ttgamingdiary.wordpress.com/2017/07/04/the-realmgate-wars-a-retrospective/), I have been hankering for a similar experience (well, once we had recovered somewhat from that epic!). I meandered my way through some armies for the Burning of Prospero in the Heresy and the Plague Wars of 40k, but have now committed to getting done all the forces needed for the Wrath of the Everchosen campaign.

Unfortunately, somewhere along the way I decided this should use very large armies to get the point across!

Thanks to the Mortal Realms magazine (plus some other bits and pieces), I now have a decently-sized Nighthaunts army and am close to finishing off the Ossiarchs. After that, with all the models I already had for the Realmgate Wars, I really just need a new Marauder-based army and some other bits and bobs.

Then, I suppose, I will have to start looking at Broken Realms.

(Already started picking up models for that one...).
