Yes. I wasn't sure I should post it, in all honesty.

The BBC have renamed the article to "Jailed music producer Phil Spector dies at 81"

EDIT: And they've apologised for the original headline - BBC apologises for Phil Spector death headline.

This may not mean much to many of you, but legendary Christian singer Carman passed away yesterday at the age of 65, due to complications during a surgery for a hernia.

For those who don't know who Carman was, he was probably the greatest Christian singer of all time, and the one who held the record for the largest concert by a Christian artist (71,000 people in a stadium). I was fortunate enough to have him actually do a small event at my church and thus got to see him sing live. Truly a sad loss for Christians everywhere.

Flat out ghoulish, you both should be ashamed of yourselves. Fairly confident that your expectation is to NOT have this level of disrespect along at anyone who influenced you passing, so why would you not extend the same courtesy and respect for others? Proving once again that the ban on politics here is only a ban on politics the herd dislikes.

I wonder how you would have reacted to me saying Rapist In Purgatory when Kobe Bryant died...

Nope, was rooting for his cancer. It just had the misfortune of being born in Rush Limbaugh.

He's being treated with the same amount of respect and courtesy he showed others in life. In that way, he's getting exactly what he's owed. If he wanted respect and courtesy, he should have acted on that before he shuffled off.

Death doesn't exonerate him, nor should it take away from his actions in life.

Mmm, while I won't say anything along the lines of 'yes I'm glad he's dead', from what I can see over in the UK he appears to have been a dreadfully backwards-thinking racist, sexist, homophobic arsehole. I can't see any sign of him having had any sort of 'good' opinion about anything, and I'm concerned about anyone saying he was in any way influential to them.

Not one to celebrate myself, but...this ain't it. I debated flagging the acknowledgement of his death yesterday, as he's an extremely(and appropriately) divisive figure.

To throw out just one example:
Rush used to read off lists of gay men who had passed away from AIDS, while playing canned applause tracks.

Rush had a segment called AIDS Update where he mocked dead and dying people with AIDS. How is this not appropriate, to treat him as he treated others?

I learned that once your heart stops, apparently everyone is supposed to forget and forgive what you did in life?

Which is dumb. Give people the treatment they treated others with, in life, or death.

Duskweaver wrote:Ah, gravedancing: perhaps the single dumbest way to hand somebody you despise the moral high ground.
There is no moral high ground someone who laughed at the deaths of AIDS victims could ever have, save for inverted one.

Looking for any celebrity to move us on here. .

This one honestly surprised me: Bruce F. Meyers.

Now, for those of us who are petrol heads, have watched the Grand Tour (and those three in general), this guy's name should bring one thing to mind: the Meyers Manx, aka the OG Dune Buggy. . . ya know, the one based on a Beetle?

The surprise for me is, if I'm honest, is that if you'd have asked me if the inventor of the dune buggy was still around, I'd have thought he would pass on in like, the 70s or 80s. . . not just. . . Today.

He was a 51 year old father of 7 children who died rushing into a supermarket where a mass shooting was underway trying to save the lives total strangers.

I don't, however, know how he was viewed by the UK in general..
In my circle at least, he was a bit of a cantankerous old git, but he had character and heart. Shame to hear on Reddit some are making some pretty bad-taste "jokes" about it.
Roughly the same here. I think the BBC has summed it up well with "He outlived nearly everyone who knew him and might explain him".
Prince Phil was the rogue in the establishment.
He was always in the news for 'gaffes' when speaking to people.
He supposedly did the family bits for the Royal Family, bringing up the Queen's children, etc. This left the Queen to get on with reigning.

Kentaro Miura, creator of the utterly brilliant Manga series Berserk (which I highly recommend to anyone), dead at 54 of acute aortic dissection.

For those not in the know, Berserk has been HUGELY influential on Japanese Fantasy, and directly influential on a lot of media - such as the Dark Souls franchise - that is popular in the West.

Last year I picked up a visual guide to Berserk, as I've been a fan since I was in uni, and thought it'd be a nice thing to have as a curio, and found a lot of info inside on not only the influences that Miura took from pop culture, but also the absolutely staggering amount of historical and even anatomical research he did to create the setting of Berserk, which transitions seamlessly from very classically kitsch Japanese High Fantasy, to nastily gritty historic realism, to Heironimous Bosch-esque hellscapes.
It's a series that I really deeply love, and is masterfully done. No writer I've ever come across has so quickly been able to make me go from "I'm sure this character is about to live happily ever after, everything is gonna work out great" to "Oh, please, just let their death be quick and painless" with such astonising speed.
Berserk will almost certainly remain unfinished, having been ongoing, and in-and-out of hiatus since its original publication in the 1980s, however, with the burgeoning popularity of the Souls series, and it's growing impact in the West, I'm sure Mr. Miura's legacy will continue to burn just a brilliantly as it deserves.

If you haven't already, try to check out Berserk, and, as I'm sure there are other Berserk fans here, take a lil moment for a real master of his craft, and a titan of Manga.
さようなら

Gavin MacLeod, best known for being the captain of TV's The Love Boat and also starring in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, has passed today at age 90.

https://apnews.com/article/gavin-macleod-entertainment-arts-and-entertainment-6313dfd801244eeeea2be2ddeac1cdbb

Personally I always liked his relatively minor role in the movie Kelly's Heroes, where he played Oddball's "mechanical genius", Moriarty.

RIP Gavin, and my condolences to his family and friends.

RIP Joanne Linville, probably best known to sci-fi fans as the attractive Romulan commander who fell for Spock in the original series Star Trek episode "The Enterprise Incident". She was 93 years old.

https://nypost.com/2021/06/21/joanne-linville-of-star-trek-and-twilight-zone-fame-dead-at-93/?fbclid=IwAR3-e3m8lrBKiabbgthQ0yjEs_r98SBzHv9otgJsAf6aF0cBbGFou9CN8YQ

Personally, I've always really liked that episode of Trek. One of my favorites from the original series, and Ms. Linville was brilliant in it. Very sad to hear of her passing.

Another bit of trivia: In the fan-made series Star Trek Continues, the role of the female Romulan commander is played by Joanne Linville's daughter, Amy Rydell.

Some of the obituaries to that guy made for pretty rich reading, and re-kindled memories of my student days and protesting in Bristol. Think there were hundreds of thousands there (believe I've read approaching half a million?), it was something pretty special, for all the good it did.

I have pretty strong feelings indeed, in that he was probably one of the few human beings whose actions have made me earnestly wish that Hell is real.

Posting now as I've only just learned of it:

THE legend, the progenitor of basically an entire genre of entertainment, Mort Sahl passed on at the age of 94, on October 26th.

For those who are unfamiliar, he is single-handedly responsible for the stand-up comedian as we know them today. Before Sahl, all "stand up" acts were tightly rehearsed monologues of, essentially, "knock knock jokes". Mort Sahl prepared for his sets by reading the newspaper. He was the first to really base his whole act around the relevance of /today/. Ripping on current news, politics, and current life opened an entirely new door for comics everywhere.

I'd never heard of him, but this is actually fascinating! Thanks for sharing! The more you know, eh?

And 94 is a good long life too, so he got to see a lot of development on the comedy format he pioneered. May he rest in peace knowing he brought laughter to so many, directly and indirectly.
