Fighting the Pile of Shame 2021 @ 2021/01/11 01:08:43

Post by: The Newman

Because somebody has to start it.

Edit: Reordering the list to make for easier comparison between the done and shame piles. There are a fair few things in both lists because I've only done some of them:

Three Outriders
One Venerable Space Wolves Dreadnought/Wolfen Dreadnought
Two Venerable Dreadnoughts
Three Suppressors
Another Stormspeeder
Five Assault Terminators
Invictor Warsuit
12 Hormagaunts
One Toxicrene, sort of

One Daemon Princess
One Outrider Chaplain
One Primaris Apothecary
One Chaplain on a converted relic jetbike
Fifteen Assault Intercessors
Ten Heavy Intercessors
One Gravis Captain
Six Eradicators
Thee Bladeguard Veterans
Three Inceptors
Three Invader ATVs*
Two highly modular Gladiator tanks
One Storm Speeder
One Redemptor Dreadnought
Three Outriders
Three Centurions
One Librarian Dreadnought/Ironclad Dreadnought
One Brood Lord
One Neurothrope
Five Zoanthropes
Eight Tyranid Warriors
Five Raveners
45 Hormagaunts
38 Termagaunts
19 Ripper Swarms
Three Genestealers
Ten Gargoyles
One Spore Mine
One Biovore
Three Hive Guard
Three Tyrant Guard
Six Venomthropes
Six Carnifexes
Two Tervigons
One Exocrine
One Tyrannofex
One Trygon
One Maleceptor

At this point there is basically no chance of defeating the Pile of Shame this year, but I've already painted a LOT more than I started with.

I can't even begin to list my pile by individual units/models, it would be too much. However, my plan is to cut off the purchases this year unless GW does a big new Eldar release. Maybe I'll keep track of the actual models that I get painted, which currently sits at a single sister of battle flamer (testing colour scheme).

2020 was the best year to date for clearing the backlog. 115 done. 2 purchased. I still have years of projects left so just going to keep chipping away.

Continuing Old World Warriors of Chaos first. Then I think I'll work on 40k Chaos with some detours for terrain and the odd Cities or Gloomspite project.

Nothing new unless something blows me away and only if I sell a large amount to justify it.

2020 didn't pan out quite how I thought; I didn't manage to finish the 28mm ImagiNation line infantry in time for New Year's. As I only have a couple hours a week I can paint, and I'm generally quite slow, it's been a right drag. But, I'm on the home stretch with them now, and the new UK lockdown hopefully means I'll have them finished (if not based) by the end of January. But, in the 3 months that I actually knuckled down and painted, I got a unit of skeletons done and got the ImagiNations infantry (20 of them) built, primed and basecoated, so I'm still quite proud of my progress. It's more than I've done in the last 5 years combined!

I have 4 spare ImagiNation infantry that I want to paint up as Jaegers, and then I'll build and paint a couple more as cannon crew. After that, it'll be painting 10mm sci fi (about 100 tiny minis) while assembling a horde of 28mm orcs for Kings Of War, Oathmark and other, smaller size games.

I did quite well in 2020, if I include the 6 feet of GW trenches and bunkers I’m finishing (technically they were started in 2020) I’ll hit 100 completions for the year.

Will aim for the same this year, mix of vehicles and infantry (more vehicles would be good). Won’t come close to finishing the pile, but it will make a dent!

Last year wasn't one of my better years as COVID played havoc on my personal life (like everyone else, I assume), so I managed a total of 45 minis in 2020 and ended up buying way more than I could get painted.

Going into 2021, I have in my pile of shame:

Space Marines:
3x Bladeguard Vets
3x Outriders
3x Eradicators
1x Bladeguard Ancient
1x Chaplain
1x Gravis Cap

Lieutenant Amulius

1x Ancient
19x Intercessors
11x Hellblasters
6x Inceptors
1x Repulsor

7x Warp Spiders
1 Vyper, 1x Vyper not started

Exodites (separate because of conversions)
1x Farseer
5x Dire Avengers
10x Storm Guardians
5x Shining Spears

Bought a load of Tyranids so now I have:
1x Hive Tyrant
2x Carnifexes
10x Gargoyles
1x Lictor
30+ Termagants
30+ Hormagaunts
10x Genestealers
5x Tyrant Guard
2x Zoanthropes
6x Spore Mines
1x Biovore

Nighthaunt
82x Chainrasps 15 complete
14x Banshees 4 complete
1x Tomb Banshee
4x Grimghast reapers
2x Spirit Torment 1 complete
2x Chainghasts
1x Horse Lord guy
1x nightmare lantern guy
20x Bladegeist revenants

Underworlds:
Myari's Purifiers

1/72 Hellcat
1/72 Bf109 e-3
1/72 FW 190 A-8
1/72 Hawker Hurricane MkI
1/72 F4-N Phantom II

Unfortunately this is only scratching the surface of what I have to do, I have a bunch of BSF minis and scale models to finish as well.

I've started well this year though, no minis bought in the first 11 days of the year!

Going into the year I have the following unfinished models to get through:

Blood Angels:
Primaris Captain (Indomitus)
Primaris Captain (Know No Fear)
Terminator Captain
Primaris Lieutenant
Lemartes
Primaris Chaplain
Judiciar (finished in January)
Sanguinary Priest (finished in March)
Bladeguard Ancient
3 x Bladeguard Veterans
3 x Eradicators
10 x Assault Intercessors
8 x Intercessors
10 x Tactical Marines
15 x Death Company Marines
3 x Inceptors
5 x Hellblasters
3 x Reivers (I think I will only really paint these as I like the models)
3 x Primaris Outriders
Repulsor
Baal Predator
Drop Pod

Death Guard:
9 x Plague Marines
16 x Poxwalkers (finished in April 2021)
Myphitic Blight Hauler (finished in February)
Rhino (finished in April 2021)

Necrons:
Overlord
Royal Warden
Plasmancer
2 x Cryptothralls
Skorpekh Lord
3 x Skorpekh Destroyers
Plasmacyte
10 x Necron Warriors (finished in June)
10 x Necron Warriors
6 x Canoptek Scarab Swarms (finished in June)
Canoptek Reanimator

Aliens: Another Glorious Day in the Corps:
4 x Marines
Gorman (finished in June)
Ripley
Newt (finished in June)
16 x Xenomorphs (finished in April)

Aliens: Ultimate Badasses:
5 x Marines
Burke

I'm going to focus on finishing my Death Guard and I estimate that with the models I've painted already and the addition of a Plague Surgeon, I'll have a 1000 point army finished for whenever games start again. Then I'll switch between Blood Angels and Necrons after 500 points or so at a time, just to break things up (though I think the Indomitus box is only around 800 points?). If I can get a 1500 point BA army together I'll be delighted with myself.

2020 was relatively successful for me – started with just over 120 models unbuilt/unpainted, purchased 5-6, sold about 20, painted a bunch...

Now I'm down to 39. I realized that, in trying to get the backlog down as efficiently as possible, I mostly painted troops – so now I basically have a ton of characters and skirmish minis left to paint, all of which are quite time-consuming. I also got 5 converted AOS chaos knights, 3 Varanguard and a Chaos Warshrine (which I'm going to convert atop a giant crab from Mierce Minatures). And I'm planning to get the Slaves to Darkness warband for Underworlds. So very aware I'm already digging a hole for myself – no more purchases for a few of months!

So far this year I've painted Jain Zar and got started on the 2 Su Jian. I realized that one of the reasons I wasn't painting characters was that I was kind of intimidated by them, feeling like I couldn't do a good enough job. But painting the Jain Zar, I just kind of slapped paint on her, and she looks okay I think so that's been quite reassuring. So now I'm looking forward to having a few months of painting fun one-offs.

Eldar
Artel Seeress
Artel Ilic
Wraithseer
Death Jester
2 Skyweavers

Chaos
Converted Chaos Lord
Gaunt Summoner

Guild Ball
5 Guild Ball Morticians
5 Guild Ball Brewers

Infinity Yu Jing
1 Hsien Warrior
2 Su Jian
1 Dragon Lady
1 Sun Tze

Willy Miniatures Blood Bowl Chaos Kickstarter

1 Minotaur
8 Beastmen
4 Chaos Warriors
1 toad
1 female beastman
1 thrower

AOS Slaves to Darkness
3 Varanguard
1 War Shrine
5 Knights

I have a pretty small list.....

1. Early Republic Roman Army- 50-100 models
2. Viking Warband- 60 Models
3. Handful of Aeronef (Surplus to need)- 10-12?
4. Handful of surplus to need 6mm cavalry- 2 Bases
5. Surplus to need Greek Hoplites- 20 Models?
6. Fantasy 28mm Surplus to Need minis- 2

I have very little need to paint the surplus to need models, but I CAN if I want to.

My focus will be on the initial 50 Early Republican Romans that I need to have finished by November when osprey releases Wars of the Republic.

To that end, I finished the initial 10 Skirmishers this weekend. Prior to that, I also finished 2 Aeronef ships. Therefore, I have all ready painted a dozen models in 2021!

Starting off the year focusing on Warmachine with the Riot Quest updates.

Crucible Guard - Rocketmen
Khador - Some solos, a couple jacks
Mercs - Some dwarf stuff mostly.
Trolls - Some storm of the north stuff.

After that, there's a few big pile o'shame projects I need to clear:

Malifaux Outcasts - Bandits, Obliteration, Plague
Malifaux Arcanists - Performers, Wildfire
Malifaux Ten Thunders - Last Blossom

Guild Ball - Brewers

Relic Knights - Star Nebula Corsairs

I have plenty of other stuff in the pile sadly, but these are the priority projects that could be truly finished as opposed to evergreen projects like MCP.

I'm not even going to try to catalogue what's in The Pile, especially since much of it is in storage. However I do know that I want it to get smaller, so for this year my goals will be:
  • (1) Paint at least twelve models in 2021 (equivalent to one model per month).
  • (2) By the end of the year, (Models Painted + Models Sold) < Models Bought.

2020 mixed bag. Otoh painted like crazy(5 armies 2k-4k, 2-3k for another old army, started 6th army and lotsa lotr models) bought also ton preparing for brexit making hobby pricier which it did. Now quite a few of bought(the 5 armies for one...) were painted but particularly 2nd hand deal on 5k stormcasts put me on backburner.

Not sure what was end result so this year will make list of bought and completed models. For both will count ordered/started but arrived/completed as this year model.

To motivate further no buying models unless i complete same number previous month! Tricky start. Received order i had made december...so atm i'm 38 models bought, 0 painted. Good news is over 100 models in various stages to completion...

edit: And stuff that is in waiting:

FEC: Assorted ghouls, unmounted terrorgheist waiting completion, 1 endless spell
    Ogres: 12 gluttons, 2 ironblaster, 20 gnoblar
    Lumineth: calthallar, 5 dawnriders
Stormcast: Oh about 5k worth of stuff
Slaves to darkness: About 3.5k worth of stuff(lots are just waiting bases)
Gloomspite: about 2.4k? plus this will be getting reinforcements

40k side miscelangelous necrons and SOB waiting to be done but overall fairly good situation there.

Last year I managed to paint forty-two models, which is a lot for someone like me, but nowhere near enough to make a dent in the massive reserves of unpainted stuff I have lying about.

Unlike last year I will not be setting hard goals for myself or try to push to have certain projects done, as that led to nothing but misery and a hobby burnout last year. I'll be glad if I can get forty-three models done for 2021.

That said, I do want to try and master, or at the very least get a little bit better at painting both yellow and white things, two of those dreaded colours I have been avoiding a lot over the years.

And I will be trying to stick to the 2020 hobby resolution list again, hopefully crossing off more than last year, and serving as a starting point for larger projects.

Im meant to be priming all my Nighthaunt this summer but everywhere Ive looked has been out of spray primers for plastics for like 6 months now. Its doing my head in.

Ive only got 1 can of flat grey primer at the moment and I found that in early winter last year.

Since the end of october in 2019 I've been keeping track of purchases and painted minis, and up until a big Kickstarter (Deserts of the Dead, amazing minis) arrived, I could honestly say that I was ahead. Now however...

So, my goal is to be in the positive again. I have made my cutoff point 31-10 for the painting year, so I can more easily count what I paint. But one day I will get through all of it. One day...

There's a dark side to this plan.... I painted more last year than I have ever.... my backlog isn't nearly as reduced as I'd like though because well.... purchases...

I was not thinking about paint shortages when I gave Rustoleum primer a try all those years ago, but today I'm glad I did. Basing a Tyranid scheme on Alazarin Crimson and Black Plum, not so much.

Purchases will happen anyway. I'm not going to play identical gloomspite and slaves to darkness list for a year. This way at least some check on purchases

Dare I even try to plot out my backlog?

    Alright, here we go.

    On the paint bench:
    Tau Tidewall Network (In progress)
Promethium Forge MDF terrain (basically just needs a brown wash and my to become brave enough to paint graffiti on it. Otherwise done)

    Ready to Paint:
    3x Tau Pathfinders
    4x Tau Drones
A whole bunch of magnetized Tau Battlesuit Weapons
    2 DnD Minis

    The building bench
    Some 3D Printed Goliaths
    Titanforge Dragon Empire 1+2
    Titanforge villager cult models
    3D Printed Necromunda Water Guild
    Tau Commander
    30-something Kroot Models
    2 Krootox
9x Crisis Suit models converted from Gundam Converge models
Skies of Sordane Kickstarter Minis. (Hopefully airships next year or the year after when I have some funds to get them printed on someone's PLA printer)

    In the Closet
The Red Gobbo (gonna convert him as an AOS Gloomspite Git)
    The 2019 Gloomspite Battleforce
    Box of Gloomspite Grots
Sisters of Battle 8th ed Army Box
    Ghostkeel
    Tau Commander
    Tau Apocalypse Vanguard box
    Tau Start Collecting box
    3x Broadside Battlesuits
    Cadre Fireblade (Kill Team one)
    2x Remora Drones
    30x Esher Models
    Battletech Beginners Box
    Battletech AgoAC Box
    Battletech Clan Invasion Box
33x additional Battletech models from the Kickstarter
+whatever comes in the second wave of the Kickstarter
    5x dnd minis

On the plus side. I did get an airbrush for Christmas so hopefully, in a few months, I can just knock out all the Battletech minis in like a single weekend using the airbrush to make some simple paint schemes on them.

Have you tried undercoating by brush or using an airbrush to prime? Both work just fine.

You are not the only person I have seen with this "spray primer" problem. I am glad I never got into the habit of spray priming due to the cold climate I live in. I would only have a very short window to get anything done!

Granted, undercoating by brush sucks, but at least you can still get it done.

Winter priming is the #1 reason I got an airbrush. I still spray some in better weather, but it's a huge help.

Wow! That is a pretty good list.

I actually took my Robotech Tactics off my list as I NEVER intend on building or painting them. They are sitting far, far, away in storage. Perhaps never to be seen again?

On the painting front, I have been plugging away on my Roman army. I finished a unit of 10 Skirmishers, and done the model painting on 8 guys, with the rest having skin, sandals, and tunics done. These guys will take longer to finish as they all have shields too, while the skirmishers didn't.

Only project I wanted to make sure I got done was finishing my unit of Orcs. In that regard I got them painted and done! In total 115 models painted last years which is 10 more then what I painted in 2019.

This year I might finally sit down and finish painting some of the board games I bought but haven't gotten around to painting. My Conan box has 105 models in it, of which I have painted 35. So I'm 1/3 of the way through it so I might just buckle down and finish that one first.

I haven't finished any of my own stuff, but I did finish about a dozen pieces of terrain, some Fallout 'bots, and Bender on commission.

At least I shrunk a Pile of Shame even if it wasn't my pile of shame.

After that, there's a few big pile o'shame projects I need to clear:

Malifaux Outcasts - Bandits, Obliteration, Plague
    Malifaux Arcanists - Performers, Wildfire
Malifaux Ten Thunders - Last Blossom

    Guild Ball - Brewers

Relic Knights - Star Nebula Corsairs

I have plenty of other stuff in the pile sadly, but these are the priority projects that could be truly finished as opposed to evergreen projects like MCP.

Got the Rocketmen done! Next up I'm catching up on Marvel before diving back into Warmachine for a bit.

Let's talk pile of shame! In 2020, I manged to make a ton of progress on space marines, but also started Tau, and even though I got most of the Tau painted, 2020 was at best a mild net gain on my pile. I did make a lot of progress on stuff like terrain, and I also sold a lot of stuff, but a lot of what I sold was bought in 2020... so...

Anyway, for 2021, I really want to focus on my current projects. Of course, Literally on the second day of 2021 I went to a swap meet, and bought a huge pile of WFB high elves. I was able to sell enough to make my money back plus a little, but kept enough to build a nice little force. I still have some primaris marines, including the stuff I bought for indomitus, and some older projects. the list below isn't comprehensive, but is probably a decent inventory of everything I will work on this year:

    Tau (Primed)
    Stormsurge
    Etheral
    Bomber

    Space Marines:
35 Dark Imperium Intercessors (currently ready to prime)
    Indomitus characters (on the workbench)
6 ETB Reivers (reday to prim)
    6 Plasma Inceptors (on sprue)

    IG:
    OOP Hellhound

High Elves (need stripped, cleaned, rebuilt)
    20 Spearmen
    15 Silver Helms
    20 Sea guard
    20 Swordmasters
    20 White Lions
    10 Ellyrian Reavers
    5 Dragon Princes
    4 bolt throwers
    Dragon
    2 Chariots
    ~10 characters

    Grey Knights (mostly build/primed)
    ~30 Terminators
    ~50 PAGT
    2x Dreadnought
    Stormraven
    Dreadknight

Well this is my "pile of shame" -

4 character models to finish for Warhammer Quest 1995, 1 to buy admittedly - I want the OG Wardancer model!

    12 Warhammer Quest 1995 Skaven
5 Warhammer Quest 1995 Orc Archers
    12ish Warhammer Quest 1995 Spiders
    12ish Warhammer Quest 1995 Bats
12 Warhammer Quest 1995 Rats (Reaper Miniatures proxies)
    12 Warhammer Quest 1995 Snotlings

    5 metal Chaos Terminators.
    Couple of metal Bloodletters.

11 Deathwing Terminators - currently undercoated in Ushabti Bone (I think, might be a Vallejo bone sort of colour - I started them 3+ years ago!)
1 Deathwing Librarian Terminator conversion to finish - mostly painted
    24 Space Hulk Genestealers

1 Deathwing Master in Terminator armour - magnetised with all current weapon options. Although I need to rebuild him (which means buying new parts) as I badly undercoated him, gummed up some of the details, and he won't strip properly...

1 Warhammer Fantasy Inn to finish

    1 Land Raider Mk1 conversion/refurb to finish

So close to finishing both of those...

A Cawdor gang box set to finish.
1 Van Saar Heavy and 1 Female ganger to finish.

1 Necron Command/Annihilation Barge to light up with LEDs, assemble and paint. Just need to get my head around the wiring, been putting that off a couple of years now...

I may also have the Necron half of the Command starter set for 9th if we ever get around to being able to meet up again safely here in the UK as I agreed with my gaming buddy that I'd give him some money for them...

    And...

    4 Imperial Navy cruisers
    4 Chaos cruisers
    4 Sword Frigates

    ...for Battlefleet Gothic.

Probably a few more that I haven't counted, and I have a few scale model kits WIP also...

A lot of that has been hanging around for a number of years now, because I have health issues that have been limiting my "hobby time" and I generally don't get much encouragement from anyone to push on with stuff. But I hope to finish some of it this year, I certainly won't be buying any scale model kits, and probably won't be buying any GW stuff (new or old) this first half of the year.

My biggest piles of shame are as follows:

Ogors: 1 FLoSH, 6 Bulls, then painting some tats on 24 Bulls, and a Slaughter Master.

Legion of Nagash: 1 VLoZD When the new Vampires come out I'm in SOOO much trouble. All 4 of them look absolutely amazing.

Slaves to Darkness/Chaos: 10 Chosen, 10 Warriors with Shields, 5 knights, a lord on Karkadrak. Finish the Endless Spells. When the new Hedonites come out, I'm in trouble.

Finish Basing the Endless Spells from Malign Portents. Everything is painted, just not based.

    For 40K, its:
Death Guard: 14 Plague Marines and a Plague Burst Crawler. Oh and a base for a Drone.

    Dark Angels: An Indomitus Box...

Custodes: 6 Jet Bikes and Trajann

Eldar: 2 War Walkers, a Dreadnought, and their version of a Knight

Space Wolves: 2 Rhinos need a pin wash and some free hand, a Razorback needs some freehand, and their flyer.

I'm working through the Death Guard now as 7 of the Plague Marines were purchased today. Next up is the Ogors as they have been base coated and washed but I need to start building up the highlights on the SH. I've pinned the VLoZD up as its the old Zacharius model from back in the day but I have that as my back burner model.

Progress is being made - I've been sick and through surgery lately. Haven't had the energy or motivation since Christmas. With Crohn's and a recent ileostomy, I've felt more depressed about life since the week before Christmas but I got cleared for driving yesterday and went to the local hobby shop for a bit and I feel like I'm getting back to the old me.

Most of my pile of shame was obtained when I came back into the hobby by buying second hand job lots. Most of it cost very little. Much of it little more the selvage and saved from being thrown away. There is always that thought that it may be useful somehow, but never seems to get used.

I have little or no attachment to most of it and even less in modern GW pieces release over the last 20 years. Basically all AOS and 40K will be sold or exchanged as I found very little interest in it along with many odds and bods. There are a few miniatures I like the look of from the AOS range but not many. The cash gained will fund other miniatures I do want to get into the collection.

This should clear about 90% of what I have.

Some items I will be keeping like vintage Citadel dragons from the 80's,Lord of the rings miniatures which are extremely good looking sculpts, and Malifaux. I may add to these later when I can get what I have painted or get them into some sort of game play. Burrows and Badgers is my first love and I will be only buying into this game as new pieces for this year.

I also have a paint pile of shame. Some I purchased to try out and did not think much of, and others came with bulk lots. These I will use to make terrain pieces for gaming. Will save my better paint for more important jobs.

I also have a "Paint Pile of Shame"

I use Wal-mart bargain box acrylics on a lot of models and terrain. However, I use my Vallejo and Army Painters only on things that I want to look better than what the Acrylics can do.

What a good thread. I decided I have too much in my pile of shame and even more in my partially completed pile of hope, to list them here.

I have been very impressed by all the people who know exactly how much they have done or completed in year. I have no idea what I have done. I have done A LOT, from assembly, though priming, full base coats, washes and base costs, sometimes even all on the same model.

Unfortunately I also started a brand new army..WH40k IG and got Indomitus, the Ghaz set and part of an AOBR set I found on Ebay. All in all, I am probably ahead but no idea by how much. It has been satisfying assembling and basic painting models I have had for five or more years.

(Un)fortunately a new games shop has opened about a mile away and I will feel obliged to support them.

So this year I thought I would start a spreadsheet to record
    1. How much I spend
    2. What I buy
    3. What I assemble, prime, base coat, wash etc

I can use this to try and track the total work against my purchases. I am already a Cadian Heavy Weapon Squad, 8 Ebay Cadians and an Enginseer down!

I am normally not much of a finisher but have about 50 projects all in progress ( and all packed away, ready to be resumed) so even if I don't finish a single one but take a step or two forward on each one, at least I will have a record of what I have done.

If people are real masochists for this sort of thing there is an old thread somewhere called "Get it all painted..." before buying any models. Its is page after page of massive lists
I hope the people on that thread are ok!

I feel like I made decent progress in 2020, but also bought quite a bit so it was probably a wash overall, or even expanded the pile of shame a bit. But I'm off to a good start for 2021 - I haven't bought a single model yet, and we're already 1 month down! That will probably change when the Warmaster titan comes out though.

My pile of shame is pretty bad. I've come close to posting the full list before but for whatever reason always ended up pulling out and deleting it. It's daunting, but I'm going to see if I can bring it down at least somewhat this year...

Currently working on my 3rd (and currently last) Wraithknight, and my small selection of harlequins. It'll be nice to get those harlequins done, it moves an entire faction to 100% on my to-do list, at least for now (wouldn't be surprised if I pick up some more). It'll also be good to get the wraithknight done - I built and posed all three of them at the same time so it'll be nice to see them all finished.

Damn, I spent last weekend painting up half a dozen D&D minis. Felt like I did a lot and that's less than a line item on my original post - still have upwards of 23 or so D&D minis to go.

Other good news - I've restricted myself to purchasing pre-painted minis lately, so the two dozen D&D minis I just added are ready to go...

Putting things up by game I feel is easiest for me, so that's what I'll do

Legion- main game at the moment, I'm almost fully painted (just a handful of terrain pieces to do). Few things on the way but they're low model count boxes I can paint in a night or 2 with enough effort put in
Malifaux- I have a couple of crews in some stage of completion, but its all easily achievable over the next couple months and the painted:unpainted ratio is still well in the clear
AoS/Warcry- Warcry starter set terrain and wild beasts are all unpainted but assembled, and I have a few bits and pieces for my Skaven army to paint but the bulk of the work is done
Infinity- I'm in the process of buying a new army, but I just finished fully painting my old one and the new one is only 15 models so I can get through it quickly enough
Blood Bowl- 1 painted team, 1 unpainted. The unpainted one is on my desk now being painted, so give it a week or so and it'll all be done
LotR- I have 3 painted armies that can all be run separately, but my big Easterling/Mordor alliance is still all but abandoned for now. Once I get through a few of the smaller projects I plan on knocking them out as quickly as I can but that's not any time soon

Got a fair bit of stuff painted since the new year – but bought some stuff too as I gear up to do a Vampire Counts/Soulblight Gravelords army.

    Fully Painted:
    1 Harlequins Death Jester

5 Guild Ball Brewers - really happy with how these came out.

    2 Su Jian for Infinity
1 Sun Tze for Infinity - I can now basically field a full Infinity force, and only have a couple more models in blister packs I can add in when I feel like it.

    Bought and Fully Painted:
    Converted Cursed King Terrain Model
    AOS Necromancer
    AOS Skeleton Warrior
Slambo and the Sorcerer from the Khagra's Ravagers set

That's 14 models by my count since the start of the year. I bought 10 skeleton warriors from Mierce miniatures, and the Sepulchral Guard (7 minis) from GW. So I guess I'm keeping the pile of shame under control, but not totally eliminating it. And now Warhammer Quest and the Vampire warband are coming... Better get to it.

I'm losing I painted 60 models since the start of the year. Hoplites, Undead, Landsknecht an Algoryn Vehicle, Space ships and finally finished of Massive Darkness but I've acquired 339 models. Basically I decided another 80 Chainrasps from Mortal Realms was sensible and acquired a bunch of Rune Wars at £2.99 a box including 10 Carrion Lancers.....

I was doing good too. I'm averaging about 10 to 15 models a week at minimum, but since we had some 3 day weekends I went wild printing piles and piles of new stuff to mess around with which bolstered the grey horde.

I somewhat balanced things out by selling some big boxes full of unbuilt models I just haven't gotten around to in years and had lost interest in.

Then I ended up buying a fairly significantly sized Carthaginian army with plenty of mercenaries to round things out, all unbuilt, but at an incredible price so I couldn't really resist.

Multiple Victrix sets really aren't helping either, when each includes 50 or 60 figures...

Ticked the Dread Pageant off my list at the weekend, reducing my pile of shame a little bit. I've painted 15 minis this year which is good going for me considering the 45 I managed last year.

Knocked out another five Assault Intercessors this morning.

I also got two walls painted, a custom coat rack built and installed, and seven electrical outlets/switches swapped for new ones that match the wall color. That living room has been waiting for me to get around to painting it for seven years, it's not miniature work but by golly I'm counting it anyway.

Next couple of things on the desk are commission work, so I won't make progress on my plie of shame for a few weeks.

Going through the boxes (and boxes) of shame and dug up these guys who've I've had for "only" 3 or 4 years.

Mark Copplestone security guys from the old Future War line. 30 year old sculpts and just fantastic. Posts that make sense, gear and uniforms that look great, clean castings.

    Now I want more

My pile is based on the new Necrons. I couldn't manage to fully paint them.
The list is rather long: 60 Warriors, Silent King, 6 Skorpekhs, Skorpekh Lord, 6 LHD, and whatnot.

@Kid_Kyoto: Copplestone minis are great, they are also very quick to paint, with good definition in the cast, and not totally cluttered with details. Reminds me that I have a squad of their sci-fi troopers in my backlog.

I´m working on armored support for my PDF and renegades, 4 scout sentinels are almost finished with all options magnetized. For once, I am painting all options right away, as I realized I never go back to finish up other options if I just pick one.

    Airbrushed, ready for detailing:
2 AT83 Brigand tanks with options for standing in as Leman Russ, hellhound or chimera.
    2 Manticore
    1 Basilisk
    1 hellhound
    1 mothballed tank converted from a M48

Magnetizing imperial / heretic insignia, so they can switch sides like the northern alliance clans in Afghanistan

I'm not going to try to catalogue how many models exist in the Shed of Shame. But I will talk about what I've done so far this year and what remains to be done that's important to me. Done this year (Edits on 4th May...) --

Tide of Traitors. For my Chaos forces in F28: War Always Changes, I want up to four or five 10-man cultist squads. I have a mix of suborned Imperial Guard minis (classic Red Corsairs style approach of X-ing out the aquilas), some official GW Chaos Cultists, some Blackstone Fortress minis, some Tox Troopers from Miniatures of the North, and some Puppetswar future soldiers with Tormenters heads. I'm just about there with painting all bar the Puppetswar ones. (Edit: aaaagh these do take time! But they're all just about complete bar the basing, now.)

Deathguard: Also for F28 gaming, I've been painting up two Plagueburst Crawlers and three Blight-Haulers which are almost done. (Edit: no more progress)

And, here's what's still to do:

    * Blightbringer. After a bit of experimenting I think he's my preferred Command choice for the chaos marines in F28. Got him assembled and have made a start on the painting but no more than that. (Edit... another few layers...)

    * Ten converted Warp Talons. These make for a great bully unit especially with a Nurgle mark. They're primed and assembled but that's about it so far. (Edit: Nothing)

    * Two Chaos Rhinos. Again primed and assembled. (Edit: Nothing)

    * Two CSM squads. Primed and assembled, tiny bit of paint on each. (Edit: Nothing)

Of course I am also working on a KoW Northern Alliance army. This year I hope to get a 1500 pt army painted, including...

    * Assorted 1980s Dwarf minis, mostly with 1980s era paint jobs so at least needing a wash or two...

    * Blood Rage minis to be my main human forces. Mostly primed, some painting done.

    * Three Shieldwolf Amazon riding bears. These ended up as freebies because Shieldwolf couldn't manage to send me ones that weren't miscast, so there is a fair bit of work to get rid of uneven molding, which makes them the ideal candidates for adding permanently to a multibase. No work done on these so far other than cutting off the most egregious lumps. (Edit: glued them to scenic oval ruined runestone bases, ready to be turned into a multibase but removable)

    * Three Mierce Walrus Dudes. Unassembled. These will be Snow Trolls. (Edit: assembled)

    * One Atlantis Miniatures Mountain Troll to be my Cavern Dweller. Unassembled. (Edit -- finished apart from a few details of basing)

Picked up a Blood Angels combat box and just finished painting it this weekend, along with my long-overdue Vindicare assassin.

For me, the really good news is that I was able to rid myself of a large collection of unpainted metal D&D minis I’d been holding onto since at least the 90’s (Ral Partha) and some from the 00’s (mainly from the failed Chailmail lineup). Also got through about 10 recent plastic minis I’d bought. I’ve since sworn not buying anymore unpainted D&D minis and stick to the prepainted plastics so they don’t further compile into my pile ‘o shame.

    Whats more important?
    Moving models from...

    (1) sprue to made
    (2) made to undercoated
    (3) undercoated to 3 or 4 base colours
    (4) a few base colours to all but done
    (5) almost done to calling it done

At what point do you consider it out of your pile of shame?

For me, it's getting it to 3...but that still leaves a lot to do.

Still chipping away at the pile. Pledging 30 Swordmasters for March was probably a bit much but will have them presentable by the end of the month.

Still only purchased two heroes since the beginning of 2020. Have painted 126 during that time (156 once these elves are done)

I call it done when I am not going to go back and work on it anymore.

Typically, all colors on, drybrushed, and washed. This may or may not include basing.

I am not a big fan of "basing" things.

It´s not shameless until step 5, including basing.

However, getting through step 2 will help a lot in culling the pile, as you are then always ready to just break out some paints and finish a project that strikes your fancy at a particular time.

As soon as a model is placed on the table its providing value. For example, I've not painted any Blackstone Fortress models save for the Ambull and that is the way they will stay...well, maybe the eldar ranger, as she is quite a nice model.

Well through selling plenty and painting a few in 2019 and 2020, I’ve lowered my numbers plenty.
This year I aim to do the same, more so on the painting side as all the selling done in 2019 got rid of most of the stuff I needed to move on.

So far I’ve gotten through maybe 10 models to a basic colours, with washes and highlights done.
A level I’m happy with to call them done.
Though most could a,ways be gone back to..

    20 Sea guard
    20 Swordmasters

    Grey Knights (mostly build/primed)
    ~30 Terminators

    Stormraven
    Dreadknight

To that, so far I've added an Imperial Assault Core box (currently about 40% painted), and about 60 more Praetorian infantry, which are fairly rare and something I buy when available.

I've also dipped into Rangers of Shadowdeep, which while it resulted in my buying (and painting) some new figures, I also dug deeeep into the pile of shame to paint some minis from the very first Reaper Bones kickstarter.

    Rhino

    Necrons:
    Overlord
    Royal Warden
    Plasmancer
    2 x Cryptothralls
    Skorpekh Lord
    3 x Skorpekh Destroyers
    Plasmacyte
    20 x Necron Warriors
    6 x Canoptek Scarab Swarms
    Canoptek Reanimator

Aliens: Another Glorious Day in the Corps:
    5 x Marines
    Ripley
    Newt
16 x Xenomorphs (finished in April)

    Aliens: Ultimate Badasses:
    5 x Marines
    Burke

I'm going to focus on finishing my Death Guard and I estimate that with the models I've painted already and the addition of a Plague Surgeon, I'll have a 1000 point army finished for whenever games start again. Then I'll switch between Blood Angels and Necrons after 500 points or so at a time, just to break things up (though I think the Indomitus box is only around 800 points?). If I can get a 1500 point BA army together I'll be delighted with myself.

I have painted up a bunch of armoured units that can play both as loyalist PDF forces and can swap insignia to play as chaos renegades.
    2x AT83 Brigand tanks
    2x Manticore
    4x Scout sentinel
    1x Basilisk
    1x Mothballed tank
    1x Hellhound

Even managed to finish up alternative weapon load-outs and optional tank commanders for once, so they are almost fully complete. Just missing some crewmen for the basilisk and some chaos sigils for some of the tanks.

Finished my Squigs last night.... so many squigs....

Anyway, going back to take care of the last of the Relic Knights stuff from my backlog since I don't have anything hugely pressing at the moment. After that I'm hoping to clear out a few Malifaux updates.

May is going to hit hard. Most of the games I play have some major releases I've been waiting on.

Relic Knights is done! All of it!

I've got a bit of MonPoc to paint and a few Malifaux figures to finish. Also finally got a Knight Models order that I need to focus on and a pair of Redemptors I want to add to my Watch.

The big pain is coming soon though. Dragons are finally coming to ASoIaF, there's some new Warmachine stuff I need to update and I've got friends itching to get me to try out both Warcaster and Twisted. Hoping to finish up a bunch of stuff before the inevitable backslide.

Caught back up with MonPoc and finished my Oblivion crew for Malifaux while also getting a couple Guild new releases finished. Also ordered Twisted which almost offsets those gains but... still positive overall.

I've got the Knight Models Green and Yellow Lanterns on the table right now, and the Redemptors magnetized and primed. Hoping to get those done before some new Batman/Riddler releases and Twisted arrive. Making new arrivals a priority has really helped keep the backlog from growing. Turns out the stuff on the shame pile was sitting there because I didn't want it QUITE as badly as I thought.

Finished up another 25 horrors putting painted model total to 237 this month vs 225 bought. So now pile reduced this year by 80 models total.

Next month try to avoid buying models entirely but also pace of painting reduces. This pace was mind breaking

No. Aos models. Mind you 65 had main colours mostly done last month. Those were stormcast. Then 40 blood reavers, 18 ogre gluttons, 20 gnoblars, 30 pink horrors, 30 brimstoee horrors, 25 or so blue horrors. Have exalt list as this year i keep exact list of bought and painted models

I can tell you from personal experience you don't want to paint that many in a month I did accomplish it but this month been "paint paint paint paint". Get home, sit to painting table, paint for hours, sleep." Repeat. Day after day after day.

Drove myself into corner with vowing to paint minimum of same amount I buy each month and then landing on 2 big 2nd hand deal Whoops.

May I will take it more easy. Read some books maybe(just got half a dozen novels by who is fast becoming one of my favourite japanese authors). Goal is to get the 2k seraphons(that's 9 models) and work on lumineth. Anything beyond that is a plus.

Not too much of an update, I've got a ton of elves almost done, but I wanted to share some pictures of what I have completed so far this year.

    Tau:
    Spoiler:

    Ultramarines Primaris:
    Spoiler:

And not technically part of the pile of shame because it was bought this year, an Imperial Assault Core set:
    Spoiler:

So far in 2020 I've painted 72 backlog Marines, three backlog Tau, a newly bought Imperial assault, and 30 newly bought elf archers. Unfortunately that leaves about 130 elf models (many in progress) that were bought this year, along with ~60 IG praetorians, a venerable dreadnought, and two impulsors, all bought this year.

So, so far actually in the red for the year

For the first time since I began my self imposed purchasing freeze I am wavering pretty badly. I really want that new Be'Lakor. His first model was what originally had me start a Chaos army.

I haven't caved yet (silver lining to GW's production issues?)

I think I'll set myself a challenge. I can't buy him until the list I want to have him lead is built and painted.

Update, Infinity and Blood Bowl still aren't finished (but they are started) and I've picked up a ton of extra Malifaux stuff so that's not going so well either. Picked up Monsterpocalypse too which is about half done, so overall I'm not really making huge progress in the pile of shame but I'm only adding to it when I'm clearing things which is somewhat acceptable

Got two great deals on middlehammer minis this week, so added about 100 metal sisters of battle and some vehicles, plus a similar amount of middlehammer dwarves to the pile.

Will probably part the armies up and resell portions, as both are intended as supporting cast to another army, so I don´t need that many.

Got my admech onager done recently, and to celebrate I bought some admech sulfarhounds - which I've at least primed!

Also, to my own surprise I'd pulled out my Robotech minis and have been assembling and priming them. There's another studio now doing resin minis and I picked up some armored & super valkaries that inspired working on all this.

As an aside, I also managed to paint up some modern soldiers and a bradley I had acquired on the side. Now I just need a game to find use for them in!

I've been fighting the pile of shame with my usual plan: the wargamers challenge.

basically, over the last few years I've compiled a list of "points of equivalency" for my miniatures.

Infantry counts as 1 each, large infantry and cav count as 2, etc.

I then write down and list everything I paint as I finish it in my yearly-remade blog.

I haven't updated in a while. I've been productive, but I also backslid. The bad news is that a buddy of mine asked me to paint some of his stuff in exchange for metal sisters... and I couldn't say no. So, that meant I added another 60+ models to my backlog, while painting models that don't help me:

And then, of course, once I started collecting Sisters, I couldn't turn down another 60 plus vehicles at a swap meet for $200. So, that's a nice big addition to the backlog.

I did make some progress on my WFB High Elves, and some Craftworlds:

That is a load of great looking minis Polonius. Love the Biel-Tan

I fell into a metal sisters army myself. 100+ sisters a land raider with Inquisition iconography and an immolator for 200$. Couldn't refuse that deal. Will probably sell about half and just keep a modest ecclesiarchy contingent to roll out beside my IG though.

Well, I totally didn't follow my purchase plan at all, adding some new sisters and deathwatch. However, aside from the solo SOB mini mentioned above, I've been able to paint up
    2000pts of Tau Farsight Envclaves
2 Ravenwing Typhoons and 2 ATVs, plus the Ancient.
    7 T80s, 4 BMP-3s, 2 SA8 Geckos, 3 TOS-1s, 4 BRDM 2s and 3 Storms for my Team Yankee Soviets.

So my new plan at the mid point of the year is to focus on the Sisters while also painting one unit from each army to break up monotony.

So since the beginning of 2020 I've painted 170 minis and purchased 6. Acceptable.

Still sticking to the pledge outside of rare exceptions like the above. Still working away at Chaos minis to reward myself with the new Be'Lakor as mentioned earlier.

I haven't painted enough this year to warrant monthly updates, but I thought I'd post a six-month progress report.
Pictured are the thirteeen models which I have painted in 2021, one of which was bought this year. This means that I have met my goal to paint an average of one miniature per month in 2021. Yay!

Not pictured are the fifty-nine(!) other models that I have bought this year. In my defence I have been scouring Ebay to obtain various models from Blackstone Fortress and Kill Team: Rogue Trader, after missing out on them when they were originally available.
    I'd better get painting.

had a couple of extra days to spare this weekend and shifted gears (not sure what the driving force was), but finished 5 Deathwing terminators, Deathwing Apothecary and Deathwing Venerable dreadnought. It started out as Indomitus painting (since I've had the models almost a year and did finish a DA Lt in Deathwing colours), but then got the desire to knock out more terminators.

With weather in AZ not being conducive to spraying basecoats right now, think I'd better look to see what is already undercoated or started.

Still painting my indominus stuff. A friend wants me to paint up a unit of Primaris Space Wolves and that special Primaris Character the Wolves got. Once that's done I'm planning on getting some terrain done. Before I finish up my 2k all Primaris list. After that? I'm not really sure. I've about 2k or 2500 of Grey Knights in my closet. :S

I'm going to be reorganising my gaming room. This will involve taking out everything that isn't built, putting it into a pile, and then working out a way to store it in such a manner that the room becomes useable again. I will of course take photos.

As to how big the pile of shame is, all I can say is this: Y'all mother fethers ain't seen nuthin' yet!

Operating by system rather than just amount of minis has done me wonders (even though some have huge backlogs still)

Batman- I'm 100% fully painted, just waiting on a Court of Owls crew to arrive which will set me back again a bit
Bushido- Got 2 minis on the desk now which will be real quick to do, then that's 100% done as well
Blood Bowl- Painting the last 3 models and then all my Goblin team needs basing, after that fully painted
Necromunda- Base gang is done for Delaque, just one web gun and the new releases to do when they arrive
Kill Team- all my marines are bare plastic, and there are quite a few of them
Bolt Action- all grey, with no real sign of painting them on the immediate horizon
Malifaux- Outcasts fully painted, what I own for Bayou 4 models off, Ten Thunders/Resurrectionists I'm waiting on a couple deliveries before I crack into Yan Lo and I have all of Colette's keyword in bare plastic as well. Bit of work, but still manageable over the next little while
The Other Side- Fairly big army, and none of it is painted. Like Bolt Action there aren't any plans to do it, but I know how I'm planning on painting them when I do
Fallout- The bad one because I only just recently bought in, but I bought an amount that I can do over a week's project
Arena Rex- 5 painted, 4 on the way. They shouldn't be too intensive of a project and I really look forward to doing it
LotR- I've just managed to finish all my Easterlings which was the biggest chunk, but I've still got a handful of Fiefdoms and 30 odd orcs that need paint at some stage as well

In general I'm staying well within 1:1 painted:purchased over the last couple months and I've managed to get quite a lot out of the way (Almost half my painted minis from this year are from July, the one positive of a lockdown). Just hoping I can keep to the same rate and make sure things get finished as much as I buy

Yeah, during the pandemic I went through all my games and prioritized 1 playable army for each that I wanted to make sure was ready to go when gaming resumed. Since then my priority has been that anything I buy gets top priority and have been going through each system and getting everything done before moving to the next. It's really helped clear some big projects in the backlog.

Get rid of the empty boxes and try to consolidate sprue's where possible. There's been closet picks worse than this, just better organized.

Finished up my Kaeris crew over the weekend and ALMOST got through most of Parker's as well. That'll bring me to just 3 remaining crews for Malifaux.

Heh. "Empty boxes". None of those boxes were empty.

I did spend quite a while consolidating things yesterday. I must've crushed 30+ boxes and put them inside other larger boxes to get rid of.

That's why I said consolidate sprues. Whenever I have more than one box of something one of the first things I do is combine them and get rid of one of the boxes to stop things from piling up.

    I continue my reorganisation/consolidation:

I think I found about 8-10 untouched Deathwatch sprues. Full sprues. Maybe 20 Terminators. Two Venerable Dreads. Two Death Company dreads. A Land Raider Crusader... but not the "accidental Land Raider" that I bought years ago. Maybe I built that already and turned it into a Chaos Land Raider? That would make sense.

More Scouts than you can shake a stick at. Holy gak. Another Land Raider (from the Talons of the Emperor box from ages ago), a Rhino, a Razorback, two plastic Contemptors, 60 odd HH Marines, 5 boxes of Genestealer Hybrids (the 5-man sets) plus 4 boxes of Hybrids (the 10-man sets). Two completely unopened Ork Boyz boxes - jackpot! - plus assorted Lootas and Stormboyz. All my Flash Gitz, which is nice.

3 boxes of Centurions. A box of 3 Vindicators. Two attack bikes. I think around 6 or 7 unbuilt Bastions.

I haven't gone through the Tyranids yet, but when I was checking a few boxes I did come across a box with two complete Trygons in there. That was nice.

Still haven't found the Bloodthirster. Did find my Knights. And I'm sure I have an unbuilt Baal Predator somewhere...

    balmong7 wrote:

Pictures of tubs filled with endless sprues will have to suffice. I'm crushing all the excess boxes. Up to about 40 or so.

Next time my wife complains about how much I spend on toy soldiers I'm going to show her this.

On topic, five more Heavy Intercessors, a Maleceptor, and that last Spore Mine finished today. Made pretty good progress on a Redemptor as well.

Unfortunately I traded for three more Outriders (...technically six more Outriders for twelve total but I could never field that many, the other three are for future conversions) and a Toxicrene, sort of. I scratch built it from the Tervigon birth-sac that was left over from the Tyrannofex, the proper head and tentacle arms leftover from the Malceptor, a bunch of spare Monstrous Scything Talons, and other random bits. My bits box was starting to run out of space and I had to do something.

Looking back at my first post on this thread, still haven't touched most of it.

But I have been doing a lot of painting this year, I swear. Unfortunately, it's mostly been new minis I've been picking up.

For example, last week, I painted a Collossal Green Dragon and a Froghemoth miniature, and just need to base the four raptors I got to go with them - all Wizkids minis.

Right now, sitting on my paint desk is an English Armada for Black Seas - A first rate, four 3rd rates, seven 5th rates, nine Brigs and a squadron of War Galleys. I just finished the first rate (modeling it on HMS Victory) - only to realize I should have painted the panels and yardarms black, not dark brown....

I don't have that much in backlog in term of building models (at least for models that I plan to use, unfinished project like some Fantasy armies is something else).

    From memory:

    Tyranids

Tyranids Malanthrope - This one was picked up as an extra while I was ordering, no real plan for him right now as I have one painted already.

Genestealers - Got 2 boxes worth of them I think, as I still use my older ones instead. Will build them with scything talons when I get to it for variety, even maybe the extra armor!

Hormagaunts plastic - They are all built, but I repaired a bunch and modified how they stand on the base so they don't tip as easily, I want to do them all like that eventually.

Hormagaunts metal - I have about a dozen laying around, but I use Hormagaunts never in game so the interest to work on them is low.

    Custodes

100% build and painted during the pandemic, yay!

    Thousand Sons

Tzaangors - Got the Hexfire squad to build, waiting for the missing pistol sprue to be received (friend bought the box and dealt with the issue), as I want to build them with pistol and chainsword for variety (already have 20 painted which is probably more than enough).

Scarab Occult - Again from Hexfire, haven't got to them yet.

Spawn - One more to build, lacking inspiration for the 7th spawn of the army (gonna have to reach 9 eventually).

    Eldar Craftworld

    War Walker x2
    Wraithseer
Wraith Guards x5 - From a Start Collecting I forgot I bought. That's were one War Walker and the Wraithseer body is from.

All the negative progress; I added two Venerable Dreads, a Wolfen/Ven Dread, a Libby Dread/Ironclad Dread, and put in the orded for a unit of Cataphracii Terminators to arm with Hammers and Shields.

I painted two Contemptors that weren't on my list, but that doesn't count because I just moved them from my Custodes collection into the Marines where I might actually use them.

I painted up a Khorne Demon Prince for my Slaves to Darkness. Essentially he is flesh tones with more red hues in the skin with some faint purples. His tabard is red. My pile of shame is treading a bit.

Soulblight - Radukar (both versions), his body guard, grave digger gorslav, and 2 corpse carts need to be based. Waiting for blood knights to get back in stock.

Death Guard - 7 plague marines

Craft World Eldar - 15 riders on jet bikes, 1 Seer Council, 1 Spirit Seer (finecast), 2 war walkers, 1 wraithlord, 3 Vypers, 6 swooping hawks, 5 warp spiders, 1 fire prism, and an avatar.

    That's really quite good.

    Finished five Zoanthropes this afternoon.

    Also added this guy:

Yes, that's a Tyranid Warrior's chestplate mated to a Marine backplate. It's the first time I've used a Dremel tool on anything, I feel silly for having never explored the possibilities there. It opens up a lot of things that I'd have never thought to try.

What made that even more of an adventure is that I bought the base Outrider already assembled as part of a batch of second-hand models. Trying to cut it without damaging anything I wanted to keep was a real challenge.

Pretty pleased with the results. Now I just have to pray that the White Scars relic bike survives into the next Codex Supplement so the model stays legal.

Probably not buying any more if I can avoid it. Also randomly finished Ironskullz Boyz from Shadespire. Also probably the last of that game I'll paint.

Sent a pile to auction and hoping a good chunk sold as well. Next up is my O-12 Infinity stuff from Defiance followed by the remaining heroes. Definitely feeling like I'm getting a better handle on the back log. Hoping to complete Infinity and then deal with my extra Malifaux.

I still have that Nativity Scene left to do...... however, I do have this to share on my blog.....

One of my goals for 2021, was to buy the Victrix Viking set to paint up. I have the rules for a Viking age wargame in draft stage, and I needed models to populate the pages of the book. I also need them for some playtesting and blog promotions. I did not expect to get to them this year, as I was going to have to paint a lot of Romans!

Well, in a big surprise to me I finished painting them all up! That was 60 Vikings that I pretty much batch painted all at once! This is not a process I recommend to the sane wargamer or painter. The process I took was pretty simple and followed my normal approach.

This week's blog is all about the ugly process....

    Imperial Guard:
    Baneblade
    2x Leman Russ
    3x HWT with Bolters

    Tyranids:
    19x Genestealers
    10x Gargoyles
    1x Tyrannofex

    Space Wolves:
    2x Redemptor
    Björn
    Murderfang
    Arjac
    5x Incursors
    5x Assault Intercessors
    5x Intercessors
    3x Aggressors
    3x Eliminators
    4x Jump Pack Wolf Guard

    MESBG:
    Around 15 Uruk-Hai Scouts
    Vrasku
    Mauhur

Lets to this. Last quarter of 2021 goo!

Also, I pulled a Biker Sergeant that I never use and converted him into a Khan on a relic bike (although I'm resolved to not do that sort of thing to anymore painted models, even if I do really like how this one turned out) and picked up some ballast and course turf to finally do something about my plain brown bases.

I've made some huge dents lately and am likely to do a bit more soon. I've all but cleared my terrain for Batman/Fallout (just a couple details and then posters/graffiti), all my stuff for The Other Side is being finished far quicker than I thought and the things I have bought (Fallout and Guild Ball mainly) are finished already. Now that I have a quick British military paint scheme I'm also planning on painting all my Bolt Action soon because it will be just as quick to do and clears another game off. It's at the point where Malifaux is the big one in terms of being unpainted, but I'm waiting for Black Friday to finish most of the crews I have unpainted so I can do them all at once.

Finished painting up my Librarian/Ironclad Dreadnought, but I finally broke down and bought a second Suppressor squad on EBay (bad Newman!) because it's been so long since Shadow Spear came out and they still haven't released a stand-alone kit for them. Lord knows why, although I'd hazard a guess that they're having a hard time coming up with another uniquel Primaris gun that makes sense for the Omnis armor and don't want to go the three-man Lightning Claw unit route. Which would admittedly be terrible.

I also finished updating eight Tyranid Warriors to my newer scheme, not that it counts against the Pile of Shame but they were the last thing still done in the old scheme, and I put ballast and turf on the bases of 58 marines which opens up a whole other can of worms on what's actually in the Pile of Shame.

Got through the remaining Defiance heroes minus one that I'm waiting to do with a batch of similar models. Also back to 100% painted on Warcaster and Bushido, so now I'm doing the final dozen Infinity models in my backlog and then I'll be caught up on that!

Getting down to where I'm going to have to decide how to tackle the real shame. The Malifaux, Warmachine and some 40k stuff that I bought as a "deal" and got in over my head. Going to start with Malifaux and decide if some of the rest just needs to find a new home.

Every single Infinity model I own is done. Feels spectacular. Tackling Malifaux next. Hoping I can be totally caught up with it before 2022.

I'm in such a happier place with the way I purchase and paint things. Feels like it might actually be possible to get the pile off my back sometime next year and have a healthier mix of purchasing and paints going forward.

But what about all the unpainted terrain?

    Quiet you....

I still have a few months left to really try and work on my pile of shame. But sadly I don't think I am gonna make it down to nothing by year end. When you only paint for like a few hours a week. progress is just very slow. Hopefully next year when I start my new job I will also find myself with more time to devote to painting down my backlog.

Fortunately/ unfortunately, at present, I have no idea what my Pile of Shame looks like having been out of the UK since April.

I know that it consists of the new wave of Sororitas, a Chelnath boxset, 90 Cannon Fodder, the Nickstarter Stargrave boxes and whatever Warhammer Imperium deliveries have been made from my sub.

Work shall begin on clearing that from mid December and seeing what becomes Pile Of Shame 2022.

Been a while since I updated here...

Tide of Traitors. For my Chaos forces in F28: War Always Changes, I can now field around 50 painted cultists. Still some basing needing doing. These are a mix of suborned Imperial Guard minis (classic Red Corsairs style approach of X-ing out the aquilas), some official GW Chaos Cultists, some Blackstone Fortress minis, some Tox Troopers from Miniatures of the North, and some Puppetswar future soldiers with Tormenters heads.

Deathguard: Also for F28 gaming, I've been painting up two Plagueburst Crawlers and three Blight-Haulers which are (still) almost done. Crawlers:

    * Blightbringer. Almost done!

    * Ten converted Warp Talons. These make for a great bully unit especially with a Nurgle mark. These are almost ready for the table, though there's (again) a fair bit of work to do on the bases, particularly, and on adding translucent insect wings to the 8 minis currently wingless.

    * Two Chaos Rhinos. Only primed and assembled so far.

    * Two CSM squads. Primed and assembled, tiny bit of paint on each.

Assembled and primed.

    * Three Mierce Walrus Dudes. Assembled and primed. These will be Snow Trolls.

    * One Atlantis Miniatures Mountain Troll to be my Cavern Dweller. Finished apart from a few details of basing.

I started strong this year, coming from 2020 with a very good finish/buy ratio.

Unfortunately i got stonewalled by a terribly warped fire raptor that drained my hobby forces for several months and i found an insane deal for an unpainted 3k points death guard army on ebay (an army which I didnt collect before this)

    So anyway this is it:

-Contemptor Dreadnought (halfway through painting though)

    - 20 Raptors

    - 15 Raptors

    -Rhino

    -Blackstone fortress cultists

    -Blackstone fortress renegade guard

    -Helldrake

    -Sorceror

    -Terminator Sorceror

    -Terminator Chaos lord (basecoated)

    -Land Raider

    -Land Raider

    -12 terminators

    -5 Havocs

    -5 Havocs (basecoated)

    -Lord discordant

    -Jump pack Chaos lord

    -Dark apostle

    -Master of posessions

    -Fire raptor gunship

    -2 greater possesed (halfway done)

    -6 spawn

    -Zardu Layak

    -Sevatar

    -Daemon Prince

    -3 bikes

    -2 Exalted champion

    -Leviathan dreadnought

    -2 venomcrawler

    -Fabius Bile

-Assorted 3k Death guard points i wont even get into until i finish most of my night lords

Everything is assmebled but the Daemon Prince and venomcrawler, which are going under a heavy conversion proccess, and the fire raptor of course

The pile of shame has been victorious in 2021.

After a strong 2020- where I had just over 250 models completed (various games/lines), I fell very short in 2021.

Model count is at 93 right now. With the 5 Empire spearmen I have almost halfway done, I will likely crack 100...but not by much.

With the year nearly over, thought I'd put up a little list of all the progress I made over 2021.

Batman- painting things as I pick them up, nothing else to really say
Malifaux- I still have 2.5 crews unpainted, but I also have entire factions finished and I'm just waiting on the finishing pieces for said unpainted crews to get them finished as well.
The Other Side/LotR- both of these were the real shameful parts of the pile of shame because I had entire armies sitting around unpainted, but thanks to a 3 month lockdown they're now all 100% painted and I don't have to touch them again apart from new releases
GW games- Kill Team, Blood Bowl and Necromunda I all had in various stages of not completed this year, and now they're all done. Pretty pleased with myself there
Terrain- Finished almost everything for Batman/Fallout, just one building to do but I also have the original starter set terrain for Warcry that needs paint (although that's really just a weekend's work)
Guild Ball- I picked up 2 full teams this year, and they're now fully painted.
Bushido- painted the ninjas last year, Bakemono this year and I have a few Ito Clan models to paint but I'm staying fairly strong here too I think

As for the bad, my Bolt Action army still isn't even started, plus I've also added to it. One day

So I've still managed to resist adding to the pile.

We just finished our most recent painting challenge season. Since trying to freeze mini purchases Jan 2020 I've painted 189 figures and purchased 6 (hilariously still unbuilt)

Torn on what to pledge for Dec but happy with the steady forward momentum I've settled into.

My shelf of future projects is down to:
    1) a tub of misc. minis I've acquired along the way throughout the years.
Mostly stuff from shows/cons where I see something cool & will never remember the company/what they made once home. So I get the mini. These get finished as the whim strikes.

    2) the terrain from the KT2.0 box. I've got a helluva lot of terrain already & the shops don't need it. So it'll be there for awhile.

    3) the Krieg from the KT box. They'll wait until I either re-visit KT (not my favorite game) or return to fielding Guard.

    4) About 1500 pts worth of AoS Bone Reapers all NIB. I picked these up at a considerable discount from a local player this past spring. He built about 500pts worth during our Escalation League & learned that he really didn't like AoS. So he dumped his stuff for a stupid low price. The deal was too good to pass up. At the very least I can definitely trade it off at a profit.

    5) The SM 1/2 of the Indom launch box. Plus enough other Primaris stuff to round it out to 2k pts. Really just waiting for the inspiration to strike painting wise.

    6) The Silent King.

    7) The new Warcry set that just released - this'll probably be the next thing I work on as we do regularly play WC. It's just Christmas time & there's no time to work on it atm.

    8) The new Dungeonbowl set. I'll likely work on this alongside the Warcry come Jan+

    9) Cursed City.

    10) 2k pts worth of the new Dragons/dragon riders for AoS .
This is my next AoS force aimed at summer 2022.

My last 12 Termagaunts got done today.

I suspect I'm going to put my current Pile on hold for a bit in the new year, my LGS is on the edge of a Warmachine resurgence and I sold all that stuff off years ago despite vastly preferring that rule system. The question isn't whether I'll jump into that, it's how hard. I really want to pick Skorne back up but that's a lot of money to spend on a system I've watched dry up three different times. Maybe Farrow, that's a much smaller lift.

In just the last few days I've finished all of the Death Guard from Dark Imperium that had been on my shelf for 4 years, and also 10 Eldar Fire Dragons. Biggest batch of models knocked off the to-do list for a while.

I feel like recently my painting is just about out-pacing my buying, so if I can keep that up I'll be reasonably happy, even if the pile doesn't shrink too much.

    1175 960 -215

Month, bought, painted, difference. So 1175 bought, 960 painted. Sold some unpainted models I bought and painted models by bucketload so model pile overall shrunk though.

Well need to sharpen up. Particularly good deals for tzeentch(which I later had to sell) and buying kruleboy halves from new players and big pile of blood angels for good price caused pile to grow up quite a lot.

Gonna call this mostly a success on the chaos army. Blightbringer is finished but unpictured.

Tide of Traitors. 60 painted cultists in four squads. I have about another 10 painted but probably don't need a 5th squad right now.

    Two Plagueburst Crawlers

Ten converted Warp Talons. Finished other than adding translucent insect wings to the 8 minis currently wingless... and doing a new base for the (not pictured) one whose base broke off when I dropped it.

    * Two Chaos Rhinos. Only primed and assembled so far.

    * Two CSM squads. Primed and assembled, tiny bit of paint on each.

My KoW Northern Alliance army remains shamefully incomplete though!

Successful year on the whole. I got the pile to sub 200 for a bit but picked up English Ivan for Malifaux and ended just north of it. Still, down lower than I've ever been to the point where I feel like if I keep disciplined on it this might be the year I clear the backlog for good and just have new stuff to look forward to.
