What's the rarest Imperial Guard model you've seen? @ 2021/03/23 08:37:26

Post by: 59thSiege

Same as the subject but to clarify I'll give context. I collect Imperial Guard and like to have a varied army with many rare items just for fluff and fun. These could be rare vehicles or the original Gaunt's Ghosts boxset. So my question for you guys and gals is what is the most impressive or rarest thing you've ever seen or what is something you haven't seen but it would impress you? (Please try to keep it Guard centered) I highly encourage talking about any kind of model, for me the hardest thing to find would be a Macharius Omega. I can't wait to see what you guys have to say, thanks as always.

I don't get a hold of too many rare models exactly but I'd say ones I always respect are old Ogryns and Legit rough riders, they show you aren't just another Guard player but a player of high taste. I'd also say some of the first actual guard cadian infantry as well, they look ace.

As for my rarest model is one I got from a very good friend of the female commissar gamesday model that came out a long long time ago now. It's probably my center piece of the collection because it's old, and rare and was given with love and cost him a good amount as he also got it painted for me to surprise me, he's a hell of a good friend.

Rarest one I've seen would be the standard bearer variant available in the army box a while back. In hindsight it isn't actually that special, it's just Jarran Kell with a helmet and Chainsword.

As for rarest one I actually own, probably a Stormhammer. Got a good deal on one online, but probably won't see much use seeing as how GW nerfed it into oblivion.

I've got a handful of guard wounded and penal legionnaires from rogue trader, along with a guard land speeder. Honestly no idea why...

Rarest would be the early resin stormblade a friend picked up for free from a house move.

In terms of something i'd like to see - the anphelion base complex.

Years ago I got a pre-release Catachan Comms guy by chatting to one of the mail-order trolls when I placed an order.

Female Catachan with grenade launcher probably counts as rare.

I've gotten some interesting bits from ebay hauls over the years, I think I have the Female Commissar. Based on the fact that searching the net always shows me super old metal Ogryns or the new plastic ones, the metal Ogryn I have must have only been around for a short while.

Other than that all I got is the common sort of rare things - the old Stormtrooper models (and a bunch of Kasrkin waiting for me to decide on a paint scheme) - things that while getting rarer over time, are still fairly easy to find if you wait long enough.

rarest guard models I own are my vostroyans. I've got numerous sculpts that were oop even before the recent OOP-ing of all the range - casualties, the plasma gunner, mortar, lascannon, powerfist sergeant etc.

I mean it's probably this guy, right?

Failing that it's either the Praetorian Guard casualties, or the Vostroyan casualties.

What about the Forgeworld metal Cadian (old Cadian) tank commander? With a hat and waving hand? I got that one, can take pictures if needed.

EDIT: or better yet, a picture from the internet

Not my work, but these metal imperial tank crew is the rares i've come by. Also there is a necromundan sniper that is actually a kneeling steel legion sculpt, wich sells really expensive at ebay.

I really love the turnout of answers and hope more come in. I feel like my rarest would be all the Gaunt's Ghosts or my Stormblade. I'm glad from some lots I've gotten the cadian tankers and rare commander but I prefer vehicles over infantry so I might really have rarer infantry models but I love my rare tanks more

While I've got the original FM Commissar, Gaunts Ghosts, preatorians (and casualties), FW tank crew, even all of the RT female "army" figures?
And despite my motorpool including both the Armorcast Baneblade/Shadowsword conversion kit (tank can swap out central hull piece to make either) & the Armorcast "super detail" Baneblade (more detail + individual metal links)?

The thing that always attracts the most attention is....
My squadron of original RT era Sentinels with thier tiny egg shaped bodies.

Probably the Gaunt and Corbec limited Black Library Diorama. I think there's like 500 in the entire world.

Or the Mordian unreleased Plasma Gunner.

I own them both.

Rarest I have is probably the limited Cadian standard bearer, although you do see them floating around Ebay now and again for a surprisingly low price so they don't seem 'that' rare in the grand scheme.

I bought the Medusa campaign Vostroyan box back in the day with the casualties and I 'think' a unique standard bearer but I don't remember the exact contents and whether it was actually unique or not.

The rarest I can actually think of is probably the above Gaunt/Corbec which I've almost never seen in almost two decades of being involved in the hobby. I imagine in a few years the Catachan Colonel is going to be among the rarest though, but these days it wouldn't shock me if GW did another print run for an event or something once Covid is over.

A buddy of mine has 2 sets of schaffers last chancers and 2 or 3 variants of the metal female commisars as well as the aiming pose of the vindicare assassin and metal iron warriors war smith.

I seem to recall that the IG praetoria army (the one with the pith helmets) was hard to find.

I've got the metal griffin crew shown above.

I also have an OOP gas masked tank commander from forgeworld, a resin Snake Strianski from forgeworld, about one each of all the old metal tank commanders (the valhallan one with the tank riders, the catachan commander with the sandbags, etc), and an OOP up-armored griffon mortar carrier.

A lot of the metal minis I picked up 15+ years ago when GW sold bits individually.

I have the Cadian standard bearer, as well as the Vostroyan casualties, both were exclusives of boxed sets. I also have the Catachan tank commander and his sandbags from ye olde Exterminator kit, though the latter has gone onto a.. Demolisher tank at this point, actually fits quite snugly on "modern" heavy Russ turrets. I really should repaint the tank commander one of these days.

I did manage to get a Thunderbolt pilot from a friend after a lot of nagging and begging for her to finally part with it. Sorry folks, I've painted it, so it is ruined for life now.

Ah, a rarity I could never get my hands on were the Cadian troopers at attention, which were a Games Day exclusive or the like? Sold in blisters of two?

The Vostroyan platoon deal's casualties were the only unique models, the rest was all stock troops. No standard bearer for the command squad though: medic, vox caster and two special weapons instead.

Rarity and things you have seen is so fuzzy.

I’ve got a small collection of RT-era guard. Rare? Maybe not, but old enough that there is a good chance something in there counts.

Seen? I’ve seen things you wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire, c-beams glittering. You know the drill. But mostly at the time it was normal. In print stuff. But put a couple decades++ on that, it’s something special. But also, fuzzy in the brain. Did I see it across the table, or on the rack at the FLGS, or in the SoL catalog?

Eye of Terror exclusive! They were meant not just to be sold, but for volunteers who helped run events at local independents or as prizes

I feel kinda bad now, I had gotten a whole bunch of them during that event.

I'm enjoying this thread. As a collector I like to see and hear about rare pieces. There's even a couple in here that it's my first time hearing about them. I'm also surprised by just how many I actually have.

For me, a rare piece I've been trying to get my hands on for a while now is Ripply, the RT era female carrying an Autocannon. I see her around on ebay a lot, but they always want a lot for her.
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/k8IAAOSwFohe5BSI/s-l300.jpg

As a fairly broke college student I can't really afford $40+ for a single model right now, so I just have to wait for more money or a steal price.

By the way, are all Mordian Plasma gunners rare or is it just that one? I have four and never thought anything of them beyond the rarity of Mordians in general, except when I tried to look up Mordian Plasma gunner just now, the only two images of them that came up were two like the one pictured in this thread.

I've seen that one on ebay a couple times in the last year, but $70+ for a single Infantry size model is too much for my wallet right now so I mostly ignored them. I think the most I've ever spent on a single Infantry size model was $25+shipping, and that was because only 200 of it existed so I felt it was worth it to me as a collectors item.

I think they were originally run around 2000/2001, but have no clue when production ceased. Well before I started looking for them in 2015 though - and they have only been getting rarer. Used to be able to find them on Bartertown or Ebay for halfway decent prices, but every auction I've seen of them in the past year or two has jumped to about 100$ for 10.

I know that if they ever go made to order, I would grab a whole bunch of them (in spite of the fact that I have I think 40 of them). They are my personal favorite model in the Guard line.

I've got a couple Lord Solar, though I've yet to do anything with them since I want them to actually look good when I'm done. One came as bare metal and unassembled, the other came mostly assembled and primed black with the dog from Kill Team on what I think is a 40mm base. I should probably check that to be sure. It looks pretty cool though, so I'd share the sellers image of it if I could remember how to make it display from elsewhere on the web.

I also have a squad and a half or so of the old Inquisitorial Stormtroopers with I think at lest one of each model (idk, but if they ever had a meltagun, I don't think I have that model), one squad of the Beret Stormtroopers including a Plasma gun, and two or three squads of my favorites, the Kasrkin, though just the Flamer & Grenade Launcher options they normally came with I think. I would like to get some Melta and Plasma for them though.

I've also managed to get my mitts on The Last Chancers and Gaunt's Ghosts, though I still need the extra three Ghosts that weren't in the box. Between those, the female Commissar, old Ogryns, and my good size collection of old Commissar in general, I'm pretty happy with my collection. Probably never be satisfied per se, but happy. I have enough Commissar that I could go WYSIWYG for just about every loadout they can have, and a few they can't anymore (looking at the Power Axe and Hand Flamer one as I type this).

When you say "bare plastic", do you mean that it still hasn't been painted or just that the arms were originally separate from a metal torso? I'm lucky enough to have gotten a few RT models that would have come with separate arms and weapons sprues, but I can't recall if the arms were plastic or just the weapons. The three I know of right now are all Commissars actually.

Yes for Macharius (its where I got my still unbuilt one from), no for Stormtroopers. It was Kasrkin they did during that.

Nice collection! I've never heard of most of the Elysian models you mentioned since I never got into FW back when they were in production. I have to ask though, is the Catachan female with Grenade Launcher really that rare? I got two when I bought someone's old metal Catachan along with two of each of the other two Special Weapons models from the same blister with her along with one each of both Catachan Heavy Flamer models. I also see her as both a single model and part of the et of three she came in on ebay all the time. Usually overpriced in my opinion, but I've never considered her any rarer than the rest of them. Others here have listed her as rare too, so I'm starting to wonder.

I am curious about the Mordian Plasma I have because they have newer style plasma guns, but even if they were rereleased as a Made-to-Order, I find it hard to believe GW went through the time, effort, and money to make brand new models for them.

Ah, thank you for that clarification. I don't think I have anything that's recast, but if done well with the right materials I probably wouldn't know the difference myself. Part of that is that I collect old metal models so I've seen the whole gambit of what the metal can look like.

It amuses me that for once my silly wild tale of what might have happened was almost right on the mark. I really thought it was just some site error.

Ah, thank you for that clarification. I don't think I have anything that's recast, but if done well with the right materials I probably wouldn't know the difference myself. Part of that is that I collect old metal models so I've seen the whole gambit of what the metal can look like.

What Mordian plasma gun do you have? As far as I know, they only ever made the unreleased version. Never seen any other Mordian plasma gun.

You know what, let me set up an array of some of my metal IG and snap a pic or three of them to share. Never put the whole thing out at once and this has me a bit inspired to do so.

Alright, here we go. Do note, that unfortunately most of the models are unpainted. Of those that are painted, only the completed ones with purple and black/gray as the main colors are at least mostly my paintjob. The special banner bearer I only painted the guardsman. I bought him painted and based, but wanted him to match my main color scheme so I carefully repainted over the original colors. The other one I partially repainted is the purple and grey Ogryn. Got him from a friend and just redid the armor as a color test.

Part of the reason this took so long is because I ran out of room the first time, so I made a second array with the older faction specific models. I also included my Inquisition models cuz they sorta go with. I also threw two Easter egg models into the first setup for kicks.

Spoiler:

I added in a close up of the Mordian Plasma and Catachan Special/Heavy Weapons.
Whew. That took some editing to get displayed nicely.

Well damn, you're right. I honestly never noticed before. I thought it was a bit odd that their Plasma guns were a newer pattern, but never thought to look for signs of conversion.
Whomever did that did a really good job of it. They'll likely see more use as Plasma than Flamers these days, that's for sure.

I also have a handfull of RT plastic IG as well, but I don't seem to have a picture of them yet.

I noticed the hint of your collection in your picture and I am seriously envious of the whole thing laid out. I've been trying to get one of every old metal IG model and a Mordian Lieutenant has been on my list for some time. Unfortunately I never see one for less than $20.

I should mention I did notice that some of the RT models have plastic weapons added on.

6 in the box, and 4 in the blister actually. I've done a ton of conversions and used a lot of Catachans and stuff to fill them out. The worst part were the plasma guns. Tanith never used any plasma, so I've had to Dremel alll of the plasma guns off, and replace them with either meltas or lasguns. Change a few heads here and there for some differences. It's been a lot of work, on top of trying to find enough models. So this army is probably the rarest of Guard models I could find.

Wait, if Tanith never used any Plasma, then why is that the only Special Weapon they were modeled with?
Also, what? There are four more I need to collect?

If there's one thing I love about my RT IG, it's that they really had a variety going in those days. There wasn't as much detail on the models, but each one looked different and had character. These days it seems we're heading further back monopose with fancy stickers replacing variety and character. *cough "purity seals" cough* I hope when they make new IG models they look good and have the ability to make them more unique without a lot of putty and modeling skill.

Does anyone know if this model was only released like this or was he one of the not-actually-limited models they later rereleased?

Because I swear by some strange coincidence, that's one of the models I've been working on cleaning today. I'm not 100% sure since the paint is so thickly caked on in some areas, but I'm pretty sure it's him.

Some rare ones there. Seen all of these in the wild except the Mordian Plasma gunner. Didn't even know he existed until this thread.

Now, as for rarest- here's one I have never, ever seen out there in the wild. The Jarran Kell mini as presented by the GW studio. No one has seemed to notice this one, not even the CCM Wiki or SOLs etc. but if you look at the studio version of Kell, he has a purity seal over his power sword and the banner is raised just a tad higher, like so-
Spoiler:

That is the pic straight from the GW site and is still used for that mini, despite him not actually looking like that. That studio mini has been that way since he first appeared in the EOT codex in 2003.

Now, for comparison- here's some examples of the Kell that is sold to you.

Spoiler:

Now, we know that pre production minis occasionally get out into the wild (the unreleased section on the CCM Wiki is a testament to this), or they get changed slightly shortly after entering production; for example I once owned a LOTR Balrog with metal wings, which came in 3 parts. I bought that at a Warhammer World open day, but the wings were swiftly replaced with the plastic ones that came with that and the Fellbeast kit. Had I known how rare that was I would have kept it! Anyways... I have never, ever in all my years seen that version of Kell in the wild. Did that mini ever make it out of the studio? Anyone ever seen that Kell?

Wow! I never noticed that either, but now that you've mentioned it, I've noticed that the LE Cadian Banner seems to be based on the studio version of Kell and not the release version.

For reference, here is a previous pic of my own (Sorry for the substandard paintjob. I swear I'll redo him better someday when I have the skill to do so. ):
Spoiler:

The Banner is raised up higher like the studio version and you can just see the wax of the second purity seal that would have gone over the power sword just above the chainsword.

Hey, I bought two sets of those heads! I have a thing about optional heads as a headswap is a great way to make a mini unique, the head is IMHO the most important part of almost any mini.

The rarest IG mini that I own is prolly the forge world kasrkin tank commander, but I do tend to collect rarities so it has a lot of competition.

I've never seen anyone else with them, and it was £140 or so back in 1999-2000 time, I don't think many were ever sold

You mean the plastic Beret Troopers? I'd forgotten about it prior to setting up that huge array I posted earlier, but 6 of my full squad are those, with the Sgt, Plasma, and HWT being metal. They were the first iteration of stormtroopers for he guard.
A handful of models in metal, with the bulk in clip-together plastic.

I have some of the gasmasked stormtroopers that followed them in 2nd edtion and into 3rd, before they were replaced with the kasrkin figures and a few squads of the original "Imperial army" plastic figures. The ones with lasguns and over-the-shoulder lascannons.

I have some of the gasmasked stormtroopers that followed them in 2nd edtion and into 3rd, before they were replaced with the kasrkin figures and a few squads of the original "Imperial army" plastic figures. The ones with lasguns and over-the-shoulder lascannons.

Yeah, I snagged a bunch of the original guardsmen both metal and plastic at an antique store. Was expensive on the surface, but I think I paid less than $2 per model, which is crazy cheap for what it had.

Here's a pic of the old plastic guardsmen it came with. A few have newer weapons on them and iirc a couple of the old heavy weapons are metal, but the bodies are all plastic in this pic:

Spoiler:

The one in the front on the far left even has a tank crew style hat. Not sure where that could have come from though.

Actually, it probably came with one of the 3 Rhinos that were part of the set.
I've wondered about this ever since noticing it and only now am I having this revelation.

It didn't come from the Rhinos. The Rhino kit didn't include gunners/crew/figures of any kind.

I did used to have some of the ‘at ease’ Cadian Guardsman.

I think they were originally linked to a campaign or event. But I got mine at the Edinburgh store, where they had loads on the peg.

Can’t remember what happened to them in the end.

I've got two as well. I think I got them in a blister off the shelf right when the 3.5 guard codex came out.

The Kasrkin didn't actually "replace" the gas-masked stormtroopers. The gas-masked ones were still on sale until the post-Doctrines book, which used that gas-masked look for the art of Stormtroopers in there.

Hm, then I still have no idea. And I guess i have at least the upper body of another plastic guardsmen of the time, since the Rhino I took a picture of has him in the commander spot.

All three were. Whomever owned that collection before me had a bunch of extra stuff to spread around. I can't remember if the turret was part of it, but I want to say I saw the majority of the accessories on the Rhinos in an vehicle accessory set on SoL. I might be misremembering though.

Unfortunately they're pretty dusty from sitting around for who knows how long before I got them, but here's some quick pics of the three original Rhinos. I really need to get a damp cloth or wet a brush and get rid of that dust, I'm just afraid I'll damage the model or take the paint off with it.

I think it's pretty cool to see how they added on later parts like the newer tank treads. And while the paintjob isn't amazing, there's something about it that I really like. It has that old school kinda feel with just a flat olive drab and some light edge highlighting.

If I were to use these today, I'd probably run them as Chimera or Hellhound variants since they have those turrets.

Hmm, I should I have written bare arms, plastic? The original Imperial Army and then guard were all metal, then GW went mad with arm sprues. For humans there were two types, sleeved and bare (and they had a to scale weapon set, tiny sawn off shotguns and stub pistols!). For a short while after the sprues went OOP GW cast them in lead (sprue frame 'n all) and you could speciality order them.

Yes the second wave of confrontation gangers all used these arm sprues.

Nowhere near as rare as some of the examples in this thread I'm sure, but the rarest IG I've got myself is this (it and a Leman Russ is all the IG I currently have actually) -

Mine's currently black, waiting to be stripped as I bought it 2nd hand, the one above is by Tyler Mengel - https://www.warhammer-community.com/2017/12/11/painting-the-steel-legion-dec-11gw-homepage-post-2/

I plan on collecting a Steel Legion army, so naturally I'm after the other lieutenant model as well (two if possible), but along with Steel Legion Plasma Gunners, they seem to be as rare as hens teeth at the moment as far as being up for sale goes, example below -

I have a 30 man platoon of them, with command squad (mostly metals) and heavy weapon teams.

I also see her as both a single model and part of the et of three she came in on ebay all the time. Usually overpriced in my opinion, but I've never considered her any rarer than the rest of them. Others here have listed her as rare too, so I'm starting to wonder.

Didn't see this answered upthread (apologies if it has been).

IIRC the story of the female Catachan grenade launcher mini is that she was a limited edition exclusive in the UK and Europe, but had a general blister-pack release in the US.

North American GW had its own metal casting facilities--maybe still does?--and would occasionally make something more widely available there than elsewhere.

Speaking of OOP metals, here's another cross-the-pond difference: GW stopped using lead in its minis in the US around 1993, but didn't go lead-free in the UK till about 1997-8. Which means you can get 'white metal' / pewter minis for 2nd ed 40K, old school Epic Space Marine, original Warhammer Quest and so on if it comes from the US, or lead minis of same from the UK for the same period. Lead is softer and easier to convert, but then again may melt your brain should you (or a small child) eat it. Take your pick.

As I don't do a lot of converting, I'll keep my brain. Thanks.

Either way, very interesting information on both the models and the metals.

Bet that sucked for scalpers when they found out the pile of "LE" female grenadiers they'd hoarded for resale was actually being officially mass produced on the other side.

I think we need to consider that some of us are using a different definition of 'rare'.

Some consider the original plastic Guard 'rare'. That's only true insofar as their current 2021 availability. They were never actually rare though when they were a normal product you could find on GW store shelves.

Compare that to the recent Catachan Colonel, which was never a general release, and is exceptionally hard to get.

And as far as regional rarity goes, the female Commissar is similar to the Catachan Grenade Launcher. In some places it wasn't available, or was an event model, but in others you could just order it. I bought it from the UK webstore when they were still doing bits. It wasn't rare there for some reason.

Indeed. I've heard of the Female Commissar described as a pseudo-LE model or a "fake rare" and other similar names. It seems to have have been a regular thing with old GW that a model would be released as a LE at an event, then be added to the catalogue some time later.

I've seen one of those pre-forge world baneblades, and even the original forge world baneblades. The original forge world hydra. The old leman russ and chimera turret emplacements. The list goes on.

I lived in a small mining town, where most of the blokes I know make a killing at the mines and have too much money to know what to do with. So they don't care if they spend literally thousands on miniatures.

Again, I'm not sure that most of that classifies as 'rare'. Perhaps the Armorcast Baneblade, sure - I don't know how many of those things made it into the world - but the rest of what you described are just regular FW products that are no longer in production. Their rarity only stems from time passed, not because they were ever actually rare.

I mean, aside from the Armorcast Baneblade and FW's original Hydra model, I have everything in that list you just described. They were not rare when I purchased them.

Plenty of Armorcast out there in the world. At least here in the USA. All you had to do was order them from Armorcast. And they went to all the gaming conventions as vendors.

Well, time does make many things rare. Old coins that were once literally pocket change are now considered rare/valuable now. Same reason applies to models that were once (relatively) easy to get but are now considered rare.

But that's my point. When someone asks what the rarest Guard model is, I don't consider something rare because it's 20 years later and it's not made anymore. I consider the things that were rare even when they first came out.

It's hard to get OG plastic Guard now, because they are rare due to time, not because they were produced as a limited run in very small numbers at the time of release.

The Cadian standard bearer from the army box, that only came in that army box, and was never available anywhere outside of that army box. That's what I'd consider a 'rare' mini.

I have 3 FW Hydras and would not consider them rare.

I do need more. I'm developing a Crusade force based on an Air Defense regiment and would like to make all the hydras match - though even if the plastic ones were close-topped I'd say "close enough."

But this army shall forever remain a fever dream...

Steel Legion commissar with respirator is rarest IG model I am aware of. Not to be confused with the Steel Legion commisar with skull mask or the lieutenants. The Steel Legion commissar with respirator could only be purchased via catalogue/mail order in 3rd edition. I've searched for one for about a decade, never seen one sold. Again, not to be confused with the death mask commissar. They look similar but are not.

Not at desktop atm but you can see a picture of it in the mail order section of white dwarf 249 I believe which is viewable online. At first glance you will think it is the same as the death mask commissar but it is not as he is instead wearing a gas mask with respirator hole on side of gas mask.

Yeah, when the Kasrkin were released, they were a completely separate entity to regular Stormtroopers, and both kits were available for some time.

The Commissar was available for some time as a regular release through the US webstore. But because nobody outside of the US knew about it, it simultaneously went for silly money on eBay outside the US.

Interesting. Almost looks like one of them is the original model, but then they edited it for some reason before actual production and release, just like the Kell model change we talked about

I mean, aside from the Armorcast Baneblade and FW's original Hydra model, I have everything in that list you just described. They were not rare when I purchased them.

At the time I lived in a rural town getting towards the centre of Australia. There was about 2 dozen regular 40k players in the entire town, with maybe another dozen part-time players who came when their shift work lined up with the weekend.

Rarity is often in the eye of the beholder. I've never seen any of those models again during all my time playing. This guy spent tens of thousands on his collection, he would come in different weeks wanting to playtest his Elysian tauros buggies, his super-heavies, his artillery emplacements, his marauder bombers, you name it he probably had it.

He had tons of old Guard stuff. A lot I can't really remember. I was around 11 or 12 when I started playing in 3rd edition. I recall he had vanquishers and exterminators from before Imperial Armour was ever a thing. He use to play with GW's armoured company rules, or maybe it was chapter approved, which had doctrines similar to the 3.5/4th edition codex.

Sometime around 5th edition he even had a titan. I can't remember which one he had. It might have been a Reaver titan? All I remember is that my friend who played Tau and I had to team up to combine our lists for more AT firepower just to fight it.

Interesting. There wasn't a Sentinel included in the collection. Is it an old part not on the recent kits? I have an older Sentinel NoS, but I didn't notice that head. I may have just missed it however.

It's the head included on the original version of the current plastic sentinel. Looking at the sprue pic on the GW webstore, it looks like when they recut the sprue to add the variant weapons and enclosed cabin onto it, they swapped out this head for the Cadian and Catachan heads, although the painted studio model shown on the store and the box still has the original head despite it no longer being on the sprue.

GW made a Praetorian Sentinel (battle bath tubs)and it came with a Praetorian head/torso. I know this because I owned 3 of them.

Interesting. I'll have to dig out mine that's still NoS and see if it has it. I think it has the parts for the Armored version on sprue, so probably not. Also, it came in the Imperial Guard Cadian Battleforce from just at the switch to Start Collecting boxes, so I think I was a bit late to get that head. It also has my only plastic Command Squad. Amusingly, that box is entirely unbuilt. I clipped the Guardsmen and bits of the HWTs off sprue, but it's otherwise untouched. Just sitting either on sprue or among other sorted parts in my cabinets.

Yeah, IIRC, it was just the 2nd ed Sentinel (the worst of the sentinel designs to date) with the regular torso replaced with a Praetorian heavy weapon gunner torso.

Those gunner torso's look pretty good fitted into normal sentinels. It's what I've done for my Praetorian(Victorian Minatures models) and Tallarn army Sentinels.

She was originally the Games Day exclusive for GD 1995; spend a tenner and get her free (perhaps more than a tenner; 1p more than a Necromunda gang box cost, anyway), and I was foolish enough to not bother.

As you say, she was apparently freely available in the USA, and I've heard people claim she was also included in the blister pack of 2 random Catachan special weapons troopers a few years later, but I never saw one.

The second edition metal sentinel had a crewman that in fact was just a reused Cadian HB / AC gunner. But any 2nd edition HB / AC guardsman gunner will fit in the sentinel's cockpit, except Valhallans which wear a large a tissue roll that causes hindrance.

I have three of these 2nd edition sentinels in my army, they are pretty uncommon now, due to the fact that they were sold only between 1998 summer and their replacement by the 3rd ed' "catachan" plastic sentinel when the IG 3.0 codex dropped. So that was about one year of production. I hit an ebay auction in the middle of the 2000's decade, when Ebay was still relatively new in my country, and I remember paying as little as ~15 € for the trio.

Yeah, I have one downstairs, bought from eBay some time ago as part of a 'collect all the sentinels' project that seemed like a good idea at the time. Never got around to stripping and repainting it, and somewhere along the line it appears to have lost a foot...

Actually, it was a slightly different component - there's some stuff around the sentinel pilot's waist that's not on the gunner torso piece. The Paraetorian one was just the gunner, though.

I've never seen her in a blister in person to my memory, but I have seen a good number of pictures of it. Here's one just a quick Google image search for "Catachan special weapons blister" pulled up: https://storage.bitzmarket.com/a/0/a0b5f181-947a-4528-a60b-9dfeef32f5ef-watermarked.jpg
