Dakka Painting Challenge Round 74 April 2021: Travelling in Style @ 2021/04/01 09:17:25

Post by: Paradigm

Welcome all to the 74th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favourite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds, ending in February next year.

This month, the theme is Travelling in Style: Why walk from A to B, when you can fly/teleport/drive a ing massive tank? Your entry should consist of models with methods of movement other than their own two feet, anything from cavalry to vehicles, jetpacks to teleporters.

How To Enter

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of April and will end at midnight UK time on the 30th of April. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Awesome... good to have a bit of a kick to paint and try out new armies and models wouldn't have painted otherwise.

Saw the writing on the wall of the Subject Poll, so have already ordered a model for this month, so hopefully post a Proof pic in next couple days. Good luck everyone...

Going to be a stretch this month, as normally I just pick something out of the primed pile. Almost done with the build. Going with a Flying Hive Tyrant. If that isn’t going to happen, might do a last minute sub of a wave serpent of some bikes.

Edit:

Built. Lower gun arms are magnetized, but too much torque to stop the droop. Might add a little poster tack after paint.

I can tell already this gal is going to be a real treat to photograph.

I'm going to jump in with what will be the test models for my Nighthaunt army that I've been sitting on for over a year. Figured because they have no legs they are an appropriate entry for this month's theme. I am tempted to go down the AoS28/grimdark route with them but also considering a brighter scheme so I can use colours I've never tried before.

I believe the correct answer is 'yes'! Though I head the Tumbler can be an absolute bastard to put together, assuming it's the Knight Models one.

As I actually managed to finish something last month, I'm sticking with the low bar Battle Ready standard. Going for one or more of these Inceptors:

As with last month, I'll re-post the proof pic once based with Macragge Blue.

I'm so in for this. I didn't get to submit my Spitfire in Feb, and I missed March :(

I've got plans for a 1/48 desert diorama - a P-40C Tomahawk and a Mk. IV Matilda circa Operation Crusader (December 1941). I have to crave an indulgence though - the cockpit is already painted because it needs to be done before assembly of anything else. It won't be seen/photographed for the final diorama though (It's more just for my own satisfaction). If that meets with disapproval, then I'll omit the plane from the final display

I think that's entirely fair, it's a minor element of the overall piece so there's no issue really.

Nice, thanks Para! It's the sole annoyance of airplane kits and I'd planned the diorama before knowing the outcome of the poll (Which fitted just nicely!)

I guess I will have to build the last three Shining Spears, as I do not think I have any other vehicles or flyers left.

This will be the last time I do Shining Spears...I promise.

Now these were scrapped together from no less that four eBay purchases as some plastic lances from Archon Productions. the two un primed jetbikes are built from the parts of three others, they were in such poor condition.

Cheers,

CB

It is! I think I will do the tumbler. I put the batpod together tonight, but I want to make a small scenic base for it with both batman and Catwoman on it so I can use either in game. Plus I love tom Hardy's bane so I need to paint him first.

I have two choices. First, this 15mm Mech from the-maker-formerly-known-as-Paulson-Games:

Second is this Goblin King on Mawbeast from Mantic:

They are both cool models (in my opinion, anyway), and I want to build them both pretty much equally. I'll watch my progress and select one or the other before the end of the month.

Didn't finish last month, but I think this month I'll be a little more excited. I'll enter my recently-acquired starship models from Star Fleet Battles:

The plan is to paint as many of them as I can, then enter the best five. I won't be able to exactly batch paint them either, as they are pretty much all from different races and will look very different. This will be a serious test of my freehanding skills as several of the ship sculpts are not terribly detailed. Also, it'll be my first time painting spaceships, especially at this small scale, so I'll have to see if I can find some good techniques as some of the things I've learned painting 40k/LOTR figures may not apply.

I might try to jump in on this. I'm a super slow painter but only have one thing lined up on the theme so hopefully I'll be able to get it done by the end of the month.

Spoiler:

The big goal is to learn how to paint decent fire/warp fire and not ruin the model in the process.

Floating never goes out of style Looking forward to seeing the fire.

Progress happened last night. I think I’m done with base coating the front end and so added a few details. Using the nice big open spaces to play with airbrush effects and self printed stencils.

I also did the underside, but it’s just a grey/ black mix so not that interesting

Next up is to work out what to do at the back end. I think some orange stripes just to break up the open areas, and some kind of numerical Designation stencil. Then I think I’ll
Switch over to hairy brush for the engines and final details.

Many a cool entries popping up!

Been too excited about the new Drukhari codex, that I could not get myself painting any marines.
I was thinking about entering with a floating Haemonculus, but Para's introduction to the theme ( ing massive tank) got me thinking about an old conversion idea. Gotta think this through.

QAR: Really good work already! I second Para that at first it looked like a still from the film.

Flinty: Loving the stencil work! Really interested to see that when it's done!

WIP on the tumbler itself. Will probably weather this up a little more than it is in the film to give a little more visual interest and attempt to hide some of the imperfections in the design. (Personally I think it looks just, a bit odd?)

Will probably do a dot filter, some chipping and some graphite edging.

Trailer needs some stuff underneath to break up the emptiness between the truck wheels and the rear axel - tool boxes etc. Could also add some jacks for when it's not connected to the cab.

Fuel tanks, toolboxes, cones and an emergency triangle... you know, safety first

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Progress with the next set of stencils. Closely based on a set of Tau-esque markings I found on the interwebs. It’s starting to look a bit cyberpunky but I’m liking it. I got a bit of bleed on the one at the back, but I’ll tidy that up in post

Still have one to go on the rear thruster pods, then I might have a go at some more realistic warning markings around engines and “rescue cut here” square thingies. This is fun and there are still weeks to go yet

That's a sick battle axe, Freya.

Here's my proof pic. I've only managed to cut it off the sprue and clean up the mold lines. But,
Why walk when you can ride on a Warp Lightning Cannon? Certainty of death, small chance of success, what are we waiting for?

Yes, AoS. It’s my first model so far. I don’t know how it plays. I like fantasy, so I’m sure I’ll be into it. Plus, who wouldn’t like painting a whole army of crazed, slathering battle rats?

Another day, another couple of stencils

This time some English safety markings. I just need to add some red blast warning triangles And I think the top side is done. Unfortunately doing the rescue stencil damaged the thing that was there already. Oh well, I was planning on doing some Weathering, so I’ll just conceal it under a bit of sponged chips.

Still not sure what to do with the thruster pods...

So, I forgot to mention the plan here... Basically, I'm going for a Rav'nwing style paint job - so lots of black. In fact, I was a bit concerned he would end up too much black - and looking at how GW paints Goffs, that basically means checks to break up the black - until I did all the straps in brown leather... I think he'll turn out fine without checks...

A fair bit of metal chipping and some rusty metal areas would go a long way as well.

Made a start today on what is likely to be a tests scheme for my Nighthaunt army. Trying to make it fluffy by saying they're in the realm of Chamon (I know they're from Shyish, but maybe they're summoned there?) so have a metallic, oily sheen to their ethereal parts.

Now that's a fun and diverse round! Started painting my woodland critters. With oils! The right one is mostly done, so I guess I'll need to wait for it to dry and then slather it with matte varnish to get rid of the shine? Might pick out some more details / do more washes afterwards but wanted to try out how oil paints work for blending on larger organic surfaces.

Ooh, I really like those vibrant colors on that diorama base! One criticism I might have is that the base is brighter than the model, so the model (the center of attention) is kind of disappearing. Maybe some bright highlights on the red, like you have on the base, could help bring the model into focus.

Dakka Painting Challenge Round 74 April 2021: Travelling in Style @ 2021/04/14 17:44:19

Post by: queen_annes_revenge

Agreed. Also, I would have probably chosen something like green for the osl rather than purple, as this would contrast nicely with the red.

For the osl, some things worth reading up on are the inverse square law of light, which concerns light intensity at differing distances from the source, and also the fact that light can't make a surface darker. So for example here, you have a white horn, with darker purple on it, and it doesn't look realistic because of that. Look at the purple on the dark metal area, and you can see this works much better because of the dark surface.

Personally if I'm doing osl I like to make the surface as dark as possible so the osl is lighting that dark area and these issues are easier to avoid

Cheers guys... yeah osl is a new thing for me still experimenting so pointers useful... that bit about the horn Queen Annes Revenge, seems to make perfect sense when you say it like that ;-) ....

I've had a bit more of a play with it hopefully get another photo tomorrow when lights better.... as suggested tried to bring up the Red of the squig a step or two just to keep the focus a bit more.. as well as slightly toning down the purple light on the cheek, its at the edge of the light radius so probably shouldn't be as bright as that... and the horn!... again toning down the purple cast on it, and as you recommended darked down the tone of the overall horn, so it makes a bit more sense it glowing up like that...

think its a 50/50 chance between having improved it or wrecked it ;-) but its onlt paint, can always add more....

Dakka Painting Challenge Round 74 April 2021: Travelling in Style @ 2021/04/14 22:06:50

Post by: queen_annes_revenge

Exactly. Osl is a very tricky thing to master. I started off small, with some red light from flames cast on cloaks etc. I found that treating it like a highlight helped. So mix your illumination colour into your base tone and apply a couple of coats, then start applying thinned coats of the desired osl colour, using the inverse square law to determine how intense the reflection should be on each area.

Blocked in (most of) the main colours for the Matilda Tank. It's still got some filters and a lot of weathering to do before completion, and of course the tank commander, and then I can make a start on the diorama base. So I'd say I'm halfway there. I'd love to say this was a total breeze, but masking off the turret for the splinter 'Caunter' camouflage was a FAFF. Never again... (He says, eyeing up a Crusader tank ).

Ooh. Undead space ghost (coast to coast?). Stylish

After faffing for the last few days with resin and fake sunlight to make a spider tank, back to the task at hand.

Done the engines now. Still some markings needed and some metallics that I’ll do by hand, but I gave highlighting and sharing with the airbrush another go. They look more interesting than flat grey, and I’ll leave them at that, but I definitely need steady hand practice!

To be viewed at a distance only methinks

Thanks Josh. That is a lovely mech. The weathering looks great. Regarding the guns, the ones on the left of the picture look great, but from that point of view the NMM on the right hand barrels is at the wrong angle. I’m no expert but I think For that kind of Cylinder you will Need to choose a Viewing angle and run the reflections to
That point.

Done. I’ve said it before, but I really love the contrast paints on nids. This was just about 1 week from prime to done, and that’s with me unboxing stuff and breaking myself moving. While I normally aim for a 1-a-week goal, something of this magnitude would normally take the greater part of a month. Not going to win any awards, but solid work to get the swarm onto the table in no time flat. Takes me longer to clean them up and assemble then it does to paint.

With the wings and everything sticking out, getting a brush places while using the magnifier was less than fun. Very 3-D model. Lucky I didn’t knock over any pots of paint. Every time I flipped it about to check an angle, it bonked something.

Had big plans for this month, but other hobbies got in the way.
I thought about building a Leman Russ with Escher crew just for fun (a group drafted from Necromunda?), but will most likely do that for some other challenge.

Instead, I decided to take part with a Haemonculus kitbash from my current Drukhari project.

Time to call it a day. This has been possibly my most ambitious project yet, and I'm pretty impressed that I managed to get it all done on time:

'No Surrender', (1st Bn Royal Northumberland Fusiliers at Tobruk, 1941)

A bit of history for those so inclined:

Spoiler:
After the astounding success of the British Army in Operation Compass, wherein 36,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers routed the 150,000 strong Italian 10th Army, German High Command dispatched Erwin Rommel to Libya to push back the British Army. This he did with some speed, forcing a retreat to the Egyptian border with Operation Sonnenblume. Tobruk, the deepest port in North Africa, was left surrounded and under siege. For the next 241 days, Commonwealth troops tenaciously defended their position, throwing back odds that were, at times, 2 to 1. The role of Commonwealth troops cannot be understated here - with magnificent service from the Australian 9th Division, the Polish and Czechoslovakians of the Polish Independant Carpathian Rifle Brigade and numerous Indian units.

However, the unit who stayed the longest was the 1st Battalion, Royal Northumberland Fusiliers. Arranged as a Machine Gun Battalion, the Fusiliers held their positions for the entire siege, providing overlapping fields of fire that inflicted heavy casualties on the assaulting Afrika Korps and Italian Army units. Perhaps the highest praise they could have recieved was from the Australians, where the diary of the 2/48th Australian Infantry Battalion reads 'We still have the 1/Northumberland Fusiliers with us, and our fellows swear by them'.

It was the words of the officer commanding the Tobruk Garrison, Lieutenant-General Sir Leslie James Morshead, who voiced the feelings of the men who endured the siege: 'There will be no Dunkirk here, there will be no surrender, no retreat'.

For those less inclined, this diorama depicts the final breakout from Tobruk, with a Bren gun team of the 1st Bn, Royal Northumberland Fusiliers and a Matilda of the 32nd Army Tank Brigade breaking out from Tobruk during Operation Crusader, supported by a Tomahawk IIC of 112th Squadron Royal Air Force.

And just a proof pic for the extra dudes I included:

I hate bare metal or plastic stands, so I had to get a bit creative with it. Fortunately, I've always been fascinated with desert scenes and wilting palms, so it seemed a natural method of doing it. Thanks for the kind words!

Not at all Tallandra, your marines are simply a different genre, and they are an excellent effort in themselves! Don't hold yourself to anyone else's standards, because painting is a journey not a destination .

I love the RAF WW2 desert scheme; one of the first Airfix kits I can remember building as a child was a cannon armed Hurricane with desert kit and you’re now making me want to take a break from Warhammer models to go get one of those again!

Aha! It is my intention to convert Dakka person by person to doing at least one historic model a year! And I recall a brown and blue daubed hurricane from my childhood too

Finished all three.

These are made from various bits to create the last three in my series of nine, you will find an Eldar Guardian torso, plastic Jetbiker legs, scratch built back-banner one one, the bikes were cobbled together from five damaged ones, and the lances are Archon 3D Smiths. I even added buckles to the lance arms to have them fit the look.

Shining Spears Travel in Style (and like all Elves, they look good doing it).

Two days stuck at a laptop watching a conference has given me the time to finish off my Death Guard Rhino. I was really happy with the interior - I was aiming for a futuristic ultra clean med bay vibe that had been utterly corrupted over the millennia. My first real go at making stuff with Milliput too so it might not be the most finessed job but it’s a milestone.

Welp...it turned out ok I guess, but man I screwed up the face and every time I tried to fix it I'd just mar up another spot on it and so on...

On the plus side I am very happy with how the hair turned out, and for a first attempt at actually painting flames, I am pleased with how they turned out. But man, that face...was demoralizing. I might have to come back to this in a few weeks and see if I can salvage that.

Spoiler:

More for comparison, group photo with the Inquisitor I painted at the same time that turned out much better, even with that not being the best view of her...

Long story short, happy I finally did this project as I have been sitting on it for months, but just had hoped to make it look a little bit better.

Great work from everyone as usual, makes me a little embarrassed to enter this one. I was of two minds whether to enter this month at all - just not in the right headspace lately.
She is not my best job, but I decided that I don't want to spoil my three-year run by missing a month.

I am starting a Vampire Counts army (yes, Vampire Counts) and this is my first sorceress style vampire with the flight ability. As you can see, she is really just a colour test model and still has a long way to go as far as shading and details are concerned.
Still - I'm submitting her as is!

Leaving this one open for a while longer to catch any stragglers, including my own entry that I need to actually photograph!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
A last minute entry as mentioned, after a multi-hit combo of Real Life Stuff slammed me over the last week, I couldn't get photos until now (or paint anything less naff! ) Not an entry I'm particularly happy with, despite the mini being really quite nice my paint does not do it justice and I still haven't really got my mojo back with the metallic work. Oh well, keeps the streak going, I suppose!

Hopefully should be getting some contact lenses in the next couple of months that are set to do wonders for my vision, so with any luck this'll be my last 'meh' entry for a while (or at least, the last one I can blame on crappy vision! )

I'll leave this open until I get up tomorrow, so last few hours for any latecomers to catch up!

Done! Grateful for the extension. I was going to just throw in the towel for the month, and then when I logged in to post that, I saw notice of the extra day.

So, here it is: Can you travel in a style greater than on a powerful, warp-fueled, mega-cannon mounted on a rickety wooden cart?
Only if you then take that death-trap contraption through a toxic sewer.
