Dakka Painting Challenge Round 75: May 2021- From Ages Past @ 2021/05/01 11:41:47

Post by: Paradigm

Welcome all to the 75th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favourite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds, ending in February next year.

This month, the theme is From Ages Past. Whether it's ancient relics, weapons of legend or just really, really old guys, your entry should have some ties to the history of its setting or faction. Also, any kind of old-school or retro models are of course suitable entries, being from the extensive and often confusing lore of the well-known Real Life setting.

How To Enter

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of May and will end at midnight UK time on the 31st of May. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

This Champion of Chaos has been waiting for paint ever since I bought him new, way back in the Lead Age:

Flinty: where is that spider tank from? I've been looking for a multi-legged mech model for a while, but have had no luck.

Love the theme this month. Have a few things that I could enter, will have to take a few days to decide. Might paint up some Mythic Americas, might work on my Necrons. This was the theme I voted for so I've got quite a few good options in my backlog!

I went for something a little different in theme, I've gone for a Necromancer bringing back to life those from ages past! (hopefully this slides into the theme)

There is a lot of classic lead happening in this thread so far

@JoshinJapan - it’s from Matstation

I bought the set just for the mech really. Burned through quite a bit of resin getting it right, but it’s worth it!

Well all right then, somebody's already snaffled Imperial Army.

So I'll go with this old geezer, who I believe I bought off Flinty a Looooooooooong time ago.

Might swap out a lascannon for a heavy bolter, and I'm going to see if I can do something different with the Grot. This'll be the first miniature I've stripped, so I'm off to buy some meths tomorrow...

WIP-1. I managed to snaffle a few hours yesterday to work on the skin. I hate skin. The airbrush helps in speeding up the process and laying down smooth layers and the zenithal effect is really helpful on musclature - but I still hate the process. I'm not so convinced on the effect, but I guess we'll see when the other colours get blocked in. Anyway - tips are most welcome!

Still not sure of the base, so suggestions for that are welcome too.

It depends what effect your looking for; I wouldn’t say that works as photo-realistic skin, but it is very VERY good artistic style skin effect. Looks like he’s stepped out of one of those professional history illustrations.

I think that sums my feelings up quite nicely actually. There's something subtly off about it that doesn't make it click into that photo-realistic category. I think it may be the over-definition of the muscles or maybe the highlights aren't quite right. The current satin sheen isn't helping either. Anyway, thanks for the alternative perspective Jadenim. I think, for my sanity, I'll have to leave it as-is, but skin is definitely something I need to work at.

Looking forward to seeing more entries coming in

Well, I'm 0 for 2 so far this challenge season due to losing my motivation halfway through both months, but I'll keep entering even if I never finish one this year. This time, I figure I'll try painting Sammael on his jetbike, Corvex. Space Marines haven't fielded jetbikes widely since the Horus Heresy, and Corvex is a venerable relic of the Dark Angels, so I figure it qualifies for the theme.
Proof:

I'm hopeful I can stick this one out, if for no other reason than I really need to get a bunch of Ravenwing done if I want to play in any tournaments this year (pandemic allowing).

Haha darn you! I was considering that exact same model! I have two I've been meaning to paint up since I got them towards the beginning of the pandemic. One's back banner is broken too, just like yours.

Spikey Bits recently did an article about 3D printing and gave links to a good setup. I think the printer itself was $250, but with the fan, cleaning station, etc. it went up to about $500.

Alright, finally settled on an entry for this month, after being inspired by all the retro minis on display here. Going to finally paint up some OoP Saurus Guard from the Slann Mage on Palanquin set:

I've had them for almost ten years, after painting the Slann up separately. I figure they're OoP, been sitting on my desk since high school, and from the hidden places of ancient jungles on the World that Was. I think that counts as ages past!

@JoshinJapan- I think your definition of “slap some paint on” differs greatly from mine. That looks amazing.

@Graphite- I hope you sounded some kind of fanfare as you destroyed My childhood ambitions

I also got some hobby time in tonight. Going to call The dogs done at this point. Still need to base them, but not going to much about with their colours any more

While Athena is a lovely model in its pose and poise and detail

This good boy is still my favourite

And then there is the most cyber-mastiffy of the lot. After 2 realistic puppers, I thought something a bit more cyberpunk to go with the Kodiak from last month was appropriate.

In my head weird boys have always been very shamanistic; lots of natural materials like skins, furs, feathers, skulls, etc. Probably comes from Ol’ Zogwort being a Snakebite.

I'm thinking about entering, but the model that is metal and plastic currently has a very light and incomplete coat of primer that's flaking in a ton of places. I also just drilled out the gun barrel so the primer on the tip all came off too. Should I paint as is, attempt to clean and reprime, or reprime over as is?

Here's my proof pic, finally. An Eldar Vyper which is 'from ages past' because it's
- an Eldar vehicle, duh
- possibly the oldest plastic kit in the entire GW catalogue?!
- ... which I bought when it came out ~1998, and left half-painted in an Alaitoc scheme for over 20 years :p
I've greenstuffed some gnarly vines & slapped on some crackle texture paint to make it look even more ancient. Going for an off-white/light brown paint scheme, I think.

With the German Shepard coloring and the back rigging on Athena, I can't help but immediately think of Riley from CoD Ghosts.

Not sure if that was intentional or accidental, but the similarity is there for me.

Nice use of the banner base! I admit I have been wondering about what to do with the broken one I have, but now I realize it just makes a perfect base for a symbolic icon or Iron Halo.

I've barely started myself. Just started a new job Thursday and it's really leaving me drained. I was going to paint something a bit complicated to really push my skills, but I may have to rethink that and switch to something more generic now.

@Slave - I've rebased some of my other older termies but thought i'd leave this guy on his original base. Its not like he'll be getting used in a game any time soon so i don't need to worry about base size.

@Sergent - Yeah i thought about removing the banner base entirely but it seemed like it would be easier to leave it in place. I wasn't going to add a banner back on to it and wanted to keep things fairly quick/ simple so had a rummage through my bits for an appropriate icon. Couldn't find an iron halo but had an old plastic terminator banner and used the terminator honours icon from the top of that. He's obviously really proud of that terminator armour!

Indeed! And it a mighty and venerable armor to be proud of. Only the best of the best get the honor of wielding such wargear in his name!

Btw, I had a somewhat silly thought last night about sticking a chapter symbol on it, but that immediately made me picture an Ork boss with their back banners, so I kinda nixed the idea.

Some really nice and varied entries this month, I think this round is going to be a cracker!

My own entry joins the other larger-scale minis throw in so far, thanks to the wonders of 3d printing. These minis were originally sold at 35mm scale by Artel W a few years back, but they very generously released the STL files for free once the minis went out of production, and I've scaled these two up to 54mm-ish (though both are fairly tall characters, so closer to 60-65mm height).

Geralt of Rivia and Eredin, King of the Wild Hunt from The Witcher 3.

And a day 1 WIP of Geralt. Lots to do yet, but I'm quite pleased with how the texture work is coming along. Also pictured, a 35mm Geralt from Brother Vinni I painted last year, I'm having a much better time with the larger, better proportioned version!

I'm planning to put both Geralt and Eredin on a larger display base themed around their final epic sword duel that comes at the game's finale, but I've not printed that yet, so I'm just crossing my fingers that it works out! If not, regular bases it is! Any thoughts welcome!

I finally found some time to properly get started on my Darkshroud too, after several layers I think I got a nice even black on it:

Not happy with how the statue in the back is held up. It's not glued yet, so at least it snaps a little better in, but I don't like the little platforms the angels stand on. Gonna try some more ideas to figure something out that looks better before I start on the rest.

@ Graphite - Yeah the old hex pots are pretty much perfect as ghetto paint handles. If you have any of the pots theres a good chance you've got some that are dried up and they are just the right size to fit a 25mm base. Not sure how they'd work with the newer base sizes. But for 40mm bases i also use use Tamiya pots as they have a bit more weight to them which helps if its a metal mini.

Some limited progress.

My efforts at a blue tinted white armour are passable at best, but I must press on!

I have also done some airbrush shading of the spider tank. It was rather easier with last months’ shuttle, but I’m satisfied with the results for now. On to the detailing on that one. I got a darker grey for the joints and stuff, but I’m a bit worried it’s a bit too green. I’ll
Give it a shot anyways.

@Baloon dog- that looks ace. I like the use of the scenics to give a range of greebly old textures

@Aash - the more the merrier. Still a couple of weeks to go, so plenty of time to join in.

I managed to push through the trough of dissatisfaction (largely thanks to this comp) and with the help of a brand new brush tidied up Elsa.

Not really going to be winning any awards, but it looks not horrible at arms length which is all I can ask for

Still a few details to pick out and some metallics to add some highlights to, but definitely getting there.

Oh, now that's looking much better. The gold makes the blue/white tone of the armour work better somehow. Somebody better at colour theory than me might be able to explain why!

If I could suggest - putting a colour between the blue nodules on the chest and the white armour plate might help separate those out more as well.

It would make it look better, but the details are super fiddly. I might try with a drakenhof wash just at the base to define the two areas from each other.

Dakka Painting Challenge Round 75: May 2021- From Ages Past @ 2021/05/19 10:59:12

Post by: Graphite

That would do the job - I'm a huge fan of Gryphone Sepia, which doesn't exist any more, but can just pool in detail and leave the surrounding colours pretty untouched.

If you've got a very fine nib technical pen, 0.2mm or smaller, that can sometimes work as well. And if you use a water soluble pen it'll just wash off if it goes wrong (if the paint around it is dry)

White is notoriously difficult to work with because of the size of the pigment in the suspension. On that note, is the texture on the model from the paint or is it the model?

On another note, you might try mixing your paints on a palette to get the shades you want instead of trying to rely on a wash which is going to leave this coffee stain effect when imposed on white surfaces. Even airbrushing inks on white is a touchy game without some precision. With an irregular surface an ink is just going to hurt you more than help. But that's just my two cents.

I’m going to stop faffing and call Ice Queen done. I have come to the realisation that I am not good enough to do decent white armour on something this intricate, however, fully painted is better than grey. I can always paint another one in the future if I get brave and inspired.

With the 3 dogs and this little lady done, just the big honking spider bot to go! It’s base coated, and my new grey has turned up, so hopefully I’ll be able to churn it out over the coming week.

So my work on the Crimson Court ended up taking far longer than I had anticipated (alas I started this project in the last week of April, so I can't even use it for this challenge) which pushed back several other projects/commissions, which means ultimately I won't have time to finish what I wanted to get done originally for this challenge (some form of 75mm Legionaire/Hoplite).

So instead, I submit to you She-Hulk, tossing the TARDIS as a weapon (which I'm told, you can throw things in Crisis Protocol). The TARDIS is some six thousand years old by the estimation of one Professor Chronotis, a retired Time Lord, so it should qualify!

Love the scratchbuilt TARDIS, DV8 and especially like the colour modulation on the surfaces.

I've finished my entry in good time before the end of the month. Happy with the result although there are a few mistakes which keen eyes may spy. Very fun build and paint, I experimented with oil filters and oil spotting to break up the camouflage. The underbelly shows this clearest and I'm quite pleased with it. Hopefully it looks the part.

Well you can count on at least one vote TH I'm not biased or owt...

Very nice job you've done on this, and you've nailed the battleworn feel perfectly (unsurprising given your SM's though). The underside is great too - I don't wash mine with oils all over, but I like how it's picked out the fabric ribbing softly and given it a grimy feel - might try that myself in future . Noice!

P.S - I can only see one 'mistake' I care to talk about - the long streaks of gun smoke down the wing! Another month of great looking minis. Here’s my blast from Ages Past, Narik Dreygur; consul praevin of the Iron Warriors. He’s been hiding in the pile of grey for 6 years.

Looks good Yorkright. Hazard stripes came out well.

Gotta remember to drop my entry in, doing a Oathsworn Australian aboriginal warrior, armed in the traditional style:
Primed proof:

And current state, as a quick snap:

Need to actually get effort pictures this month for finals, but the usual covering my bases.

(It's a favourite topic for RAF scale modellers to hotly, and pointlessly, debate whether or not flight surfaces were rigorously cleaned inbetween sorties - very much 'rivet counting' stuff. Haha cheers! Definitely no bias at all, at all

I figured that due to the amount of sorties squadrons were facing during the Battle of Britain, the planes might have been a little bit dirtier and more weathered due to the lack of time for maintenance so that would have included the gun smoke. The trails are a little bit long but I think it fits the setting and I had to read through so many back and forth arguments about Hurricanes in general! The all over wash achieved what I wanted with that in mind, but if I was going to do another, a cleaner one would be less messy and less time consuming to clean up with panel lining. It is fun to absolutely cover a model in paint though.

Didn't realise going into this that the passion runs deep for these aircraft so it can be intimidating to tackle one knowing that there will be scrutiny.

But that's a totally reasonable argument - I mean, there was a war on! And at the height of the BoB, ground crew were turning over aircraft incredibly quickly. I don't buy the argument that the 1mph gained by polishing flight surfaces was their most important goal when aircraft were coming back on fumes, with ammunition exhausted and shot through...

Aye, historical modellers can get... intense .

But in fairness I think it's because, unlike fictional modelling, there's a very tangible sense that behind each model stands the shadow of somebody or something real. At least, that's my feeling when I paint historicals. It's one thing to imagine the artificial heroism of a 7ft genetically enhanced killing machine with a rocket-launching machine gun, and totally another to comprehend how my GG-Grandfather, a mild-mannered postman, climbed over the top into literal hell-on-earth, and bayonet charged the Prussian Guard at the Somme. Makes you seriously invested in what you're depicting, and getting it 'right'.

Good work everyone! Bit behind schedule because of course I shoved the Vyper from my table accidentally and of course the flight stand broke off and then I had to get a pin vise to pin it. Thankfully there's a conference tomorrow/friday that can double as painting time to get the turret finished :p

Excellent work by all so far! Finally got mine in. I'm not all that thrilled with my efforts and there is much room for improvement if I do another figurine. But as my very first in this scale I didn't have high hopes to begin with! Some of you may notice the paint on the nose has rubbed off - this is because the helmet is a snug fit and the face isn't designed to be displayed really (He's also got nee ears!). But since I painted it, I may as well show it

Anyway, I entitled this piece 'Aristeia', which was the Ancient Greek term for 'excellence', and more specifically referred to an epic set of deeds which immortalised (sometimes literally) a great warrior. The aristeia I chose to depict (not that it is described as such), is that of a Spartiate - Aristodemus of Lakedaimon, at the Battle of Plataea. As always, more info for those so inclined :

Spoiler:
Aristodemus was one of only 3 Spartans who survived the Battle of Thermopylae in 480BC, having been ordered home by King Leonidas I due to an eye-infection. Unfortunately for Aristodemus, faithfully carrying out his orders, his colleague Eurytas (also suffering from the eye-infection) decided to return to the battle, and was led back by his helot servant, although blind, where he charged into the fray to die alongside the 300. Pantites, the third Spartan survivor, had been away on an embassy to Thessaly and hung himself in shame for having missed the battle. And so Aristodemus became an outcast, denounced as a coward. Unable to bear the shame, the next year at the Battle of Plataea, Aristodemus broke ranks from the Lakedaimonian phalanx and charged the Persian lines alone where he killed in a beserker fury, determined to redeem himself, before being cut down. Herodotos deemed Aristodemus the bravest man in the entire Greek army, but despite having redeemed himself the Spartans honoured another, Poseidonius, who had not abandoned his discipline and had fought without wishing to die.

Aristodemus' story is an incredibly personal, and tragic, flash from history. This year is the 2500th anniversary of the Battle of Plataea, so I think it's apt to pay homage to Aristodemus so that his redemption lives on.

I'll jump in with a last minute project. I printed a blood angel bust last year in September and have been smoothing out all surfaces since then, while also sculpting a bit of detail onto it. I finally manged to finish the sculpt a few days ago and then still had enough motivation to paint it in a couple of sessions. I hope the bust fits the theme, as it has a 30K vibe to it

Proof and painting progress:
Spoiler:

I primed everything black and then gave it a coat of white from above. Probably would've worked better with a more transparent paint in the end, but you can see a bit of color transition in the final model.

Now with a proper red coat of paint.

A few layers of paint, unfortunately I did not take many WIP shots. But I really like the battle damage and marble effect

Putting it all together

Finished paintjob, these aren't the final pictures. I'll try to upload some better ones either later today or on the weekend
Spoiler:

Extremely happy with how it turned out! I gave the whole model an oil wash to darken it down and to shade the recesses. I could've done a lot more on the black in terms of highlights, but I wasn't feeling confident enough for that. I'll probably practice that on my new smaller busts and then maybe come back to this.
My favorite parts are definetely the marble, gemstones and eyes

Calling them done. Captain, Veteran, and an Assault marine. Who I’m calling a vet, despite not having any markings. He’s been kicking around since the RT era, that’s got to count for years in service. You just don’t see many severed heads on loyalists these days. Ahh, for the classic era, where the “good” guys were just brain-scrubbed criminals enforcing the Emperor’s will. Captain had the appropriate symbol on his helmet, and the vet has the right stripe.

These guys might be the last of the power armor RT metals I have. Still have some RTB01s, and TDA if I dig a little. Might be a few left wearing BA colors. Was fun getting paint on the old stuff, even if they might not see the table any time soon.

@vejut - that platypus is ace! I love the cloak.

@nevelon - those are the oldest of schools. The bare heads are significantly bigger than the helmet on the other guy . Your scheme looks good on them, especially the green power blades.

I’m going to call a finish on my entry for this month. Final entry photos below. Finished some rust spotting and assembly of the spider mech tonight. Also finished an alternate turret with a plasma gun in case I ever get around to upgrading the thing in-game.

Looks like the leg joints really didn’t print properly either on the torso or on the legs, so I’ve just flooded the area with gel super glue. It’s all underneath so it’ll never be seen anyway, especially in the display cabinet

So here is a hunting party from the Vortices gang of House Van Saar, utilising a mixture of ancient STC tech and ancient human companions (with a bit of overlap... hell, maybe they even implanted a dog brain into the spider mech for a bit of rat-thing action):

Hey, I actually finished this time! Here are the final pics of Sammael, the Dark Angels' current Master of the Ravenwing:

I think he fits the theme on two counts: he's riding quite possibly the last jetbike of the Adeptus Astartes, a relic of a bygone age. And his sword is a treasured heirloom, passed down to each successive Master of the Ravenwing when their predecessor is killed in battle.

Overall I had a ton of fun with this model. Probably not my best work, as my photos were not kind despite being actually decent photos. I also have now acquired a lightbox and this is the first model to be photographed with that. I'll probably have to do further experimentation to figure out the optimal brightness and camera settings to use it well, but I'm happy with these pics as a first attempt. Looking forward to the voting, as there are a lot of pretty cool entries coming in!

All of my iron hand army are on a water planet (I watched most of the iron hand models are on the sand so I want to make some difference XD).
But it is not suitable to most of the table Orz.

There's so much amazing stuff this month!

I'm going to try to chuck in a last-minute entry. I'm going to paint a guy who's not only from long, long ago, but also far, far away. Chewbacca from Star Wars, of course.

I've not had much time, as I'm being worked hard by Siege, but I'm hoping to get Chewie into a presentable state tonight, although I might have to take the photos tomorrow morning if that's okay.

My own entry flying in under the wire, though if other people need an extra day I might redo these pics as they're a little shiny on this screen. Didn't get the diorama base finished (maths error on the original print meant the minis didn't fit, and I've not had time to redo it) so it's just Geralt in the end, once again at 54mm and based on the look from the game rather than the show. Couple of areas are a little scruffier than I'd like, but in terms of the overall look I'm really rather pleased, given it's mostly different shades of brown and black...

Spoiler:

Any thoughts welcome, and if you like it, please toss a vote to your Witcher! (apologies for anyone who now has that bloody song stuck in their heads for the next week )

If anyone needs the extra day just shout, realistically the vote won't be up tomorrow anyway. New round will be though, so see you there.

A typcially last-minute entry from me. This is the man of iron "imperial robot" from Blackstone Fortress. I wasn't sure how to weather it to make it look old without just making it look dirty. I really like this model, but found myself a little unmotivated this month - we've just re-entered lockdown over here so the family becomes a real priority.
Anyhow, here he is - the red colours haven't photographed well and the pics are very blurred due to the crummy camera I have to use stuck in the house but I am mostly happy with the sword...eh, it is what it is...
Good luck to everyone!

<Runs in panting, holding a briefcase full of papers>

I'm here, I've got my wookie with me. Sorry about the delay.

Not bad considering I didn't even own the model until about 5pm yesterday. I painted him while I was waiting for some gap-filling material to properly cure. I've been really busy. If anyone follows the Siege Studios Instagram, I painted that huge white Ultramarines army that has been appearing on there for the last couple of weeks. I'm now working on two more jobs for them.

Thanks, Midget Gems. I've not got anything particularly good to report about the cat. She's 20 and living on borrowed time, basically. The other cat got into a fight and was bitten so he's having to wear one of those cones on his head. He's a sulky, resentful conehead. The elderly one is the more cheerful by far.
