Dakka Painting Challenge Round 77 July 2021: Nothing To Fear But Fear Itself @ 2021/07/01 09:47:54

Post by: Paradigm

Welcome all to the 77th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favourite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds, ending in February next year.

This month, the theme is Nothing To Fear But Fear Itself: Blades and bullets may tear the flesh, but the morale of the enemy is best broken by fear. Your entry should feature models who employ fear or terror as weapons, from grotesque abominations to shadowy agents sowing panic behind enemy lines.

How To Enter

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of July and will end at midnight UK time on the 31st July. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

You have nothing to fear but fear itself.
And unspeakable hunger beasts from beyond the outer black that will devour you and all you hold dear in a gruesome frenzy of gluttony.
You can fear that as well.

Nothing says fear like a rhino full of khorne berzerkers bearing down on you. Should be a good excuse to test out the airbrush my wife bought me. I'll post proof after work tonight.

Oh man I really don't have anything for this one. All I have right now is orks, so either a particularly scary warboss or...

Maybe my kans? Kommandos would work I guess but I don't have any right now. I could buy Ghazghkull I guess but my list isn't ready for him yet, as I'm only at 1000 points.

Right now I just have boyz, stormboyz, a chimera trukk, kans, and 2 warbosses.

Stormboyz or a warboss would probably work. Both are good for some pants-wetting terror for things on the other side of the fight.

Just slap some paint on the meanest, ugliest, scary thing you have.

I will likely do some old metal Delaque Gangers...the ones that hid in the shadows and jumped out to ambush the other gangs.

Delaques are off the table as they may still be in transit when this month comes to an end. So instead I will do some Pit Slaves and Spryers to provide Necromunda Nightmares.

Cheers,

CB

WIP shot of the Exocrine/Haruspex. Body needs touch ups, heads just got their Grey Seer base.

Not to sound like a GW salesmonkey, but if you’ve ever wanted to collect ‘Nids, but the thought of painting that many bugs is what held you back, contrast paints are what you need. Won’t help with cleaning the mold lines on everything, but paint goes FAST. I’m having a seriously fun time just rolling these bugs across the paint bench.

I don't even use contrast but a GSC patriarch that I painted a while ago is like one of my best-looking minis and still the one that seemed the easiest to paint - I guess it's the overall Tyranid design with lots of large surfaces that aren't just bland, nice sharp edges for highlights, recesses for shading etc etc. ... but without having to take care if this or that part is from a different material, it's all just carapace in the end. It's like they were bioengineered to make mini painting techniques just 'click'

Anyway, here's my proof! Everyone likes spiders, right? Right?

Umm yeah I've been using its base to brush off excess basing texture paint, parts of this thing have been sitting on my table for quite a while now :p

While not quite as simple in design, I have a ton of boyz to paint, and contrast paints are really helping me blow through them. They have a lot of yellow on them, so a single coat of it instead of the 3+ typically required is a godsend.

This seems appropriate: "Fiday (“they who are willing to sacrifice”) are the angels of destruction, the most fearsome among the Hassassin. A Fiday is not a mere assassin, but an executioner: she acts in public and sends a public message. A man is killed, thousands are terrorized and, if the Fiday is apprehended, she will die a courageous death."

I'll throw my hat in the ring - a Messerschmitt Bf-109/F-4 (Trop). I think it's an indisputed fact that the Nazi Regime revelled in using fear and terror as weapons - and the Luftwaffe were widely complicit in all of the crimes of the Nazi Regime.

Anyway, that grim (but highly important) point aside - this model is destined for another themed diorama, so I may be adding to the entry with some considerable 'extras' if I get the time, and funds, to scrape this together. I'll also be doing a stage-by-stage build in my blog (Along with a Ju-88) if anyone is remotely interested in getting to grips with historic modelling/painting styles

"Are you frightened?"
"Yes."
"Not nearly frightened enough. I know what hunts you."

I think I've got an entry here that absolutely epitomizes the Fear theme: a few representatives of the Nazgul, the Nine Servants of the Dark Lord Sauron tasked with finding the One Ring. Here's the proof:

What's going to be tricky is making models that are basically all black look interesting. I've seen minimalist approaches taken with these models; basically just spray black, basecoat and shade the metallic bits, drybrush the cloaks, job's a good'un. But that really isn't good enough to me; I really want my Ringwraiths to pop. I saw a cool tutorial on Youtube on a really nice method to paint these models and I'll probably start with that, assuming I can find it again.

I also wanted to get my only mounted Nazgul in there for variety, but he's more of a stretch goal assuming I can get the others done.

What would you guys recommend as a cloak for the ork I showed earlier? Can I get a decent cloak with contrasts (maybe the bone one, as the brown is a bit dark), or should I do my older method of mournfang brown > heavy drybrush XV88 > light drybrush ushabti bone? Mixed method of contrast wyldwood, drybrush XV88 then bone? Or would it be okay to do some crazier color, like red?

Pic of the cloak, I can't remember what it's from, maybe the old empire knight box?

Hmmmm, what story would you like to tell through this mini? Is this some weird alien beastie fur that your boss is showing off, or much rather a crusty thing that he dragged through a couple dozen battlefields by now? Does he belong to a specific ork clan?
(Can't say much about specific GW colors unfortunately as I don't use them myself)

Never tried contrast fur myself, but my instinct would be that it would be quite light at the tips of the fur spikes compared to drybrushing. I'd also guess that you can make patterns in the fur more easily with drybrushing.

Carnivorous, angry, able to burrow up behind you… I think Ambulls are worth being afraid of. They certainly get centre stage as a scary thing in BSF.

Gives me an opportunity to go back to my BSF stuff that I never got around to finishing, and also now that I have a slightly better idea of what I’m doing with the airbrush I can try out some more advanced OSL.

So proof picture

And straight into some progress

Trying for a blue up light from the floor to match my other BSF bases (example below), and a sickly green from behind. I was also thinking of going for some kind of glow from the eyes, but that might be too much.

I think the base coats of the different sources has gone in fine, but I was wondering if anyone could recommend whether to do the lighter highlights with the airbrush, or whether it’s better from this point to go to hairy brush to do some highlights and, god forbid, a bit of blending?

Example bases on my traitor guard

Even compared to the Chaplains of most other Chapters, the Interrogator-Chaplains of the Unforgiven not only instil fanaticism and absolute loyalty in their brothers, but are also surrounded by a palpable Aura of Dread.

Enough motivation for me to finally get to finish my conversion of a Ravenwing Primaris Chaplain:

@ms07b3 - love the sister. Good level of bling, nice chipping, and the candles are great. Keep it up!

After my less than effective use of airbrush on smaller targets I have decided to go the hairy brush route here on in.

The little critters will be well lit:

Mummy will be rather more lurky:

I’please probably take the facial highlighting up one more level to close to white just in a few spots.

From the rear, not quite sure yet how to highlight the green to get a glowy effect. I may go hunting on YouTube.

From below. Planning on doing a few brighter highlights lower down as if being uplit.

And the thing doing the up lighting

RAWR! Nomnomnom...

So the main draw is the haruspex, as he’ll just eat his way though your army. He’s even got a strat “grisly feast" about being a messy eater that adds to nearby morale tests. Good ol’ visceral “It’s gonna EAT ME!” fear. Visually the more terrifying of the pair. The Exocrine on the other claw, might not look as bad, but can double-shot bio-plasma across the table and melt whole squads into puddles of goo. Not too shabby.

So less fun painting this guy then the flyrant. He’s got a lot of things that bump against my paint scheme. Red=claws and guns, but his knuckles don’t have nice demarkation lines like most nids. So I had to fudge a little on where the skin stops and the claw starts. Similar things with some of the sinews around the mouth. What’s skin? What’s fang? Where’s the line? Contrast paints work like a charm, and get these guys done in rapid order.

Overall still nice to get him done. He’ll add another big bug to the swarm, either as a midfielder, or backfield support.

Here's where I'm at. I might change the photos later or update the model if I'm feeling it but if not, this is pretty satisfactory for me.

Started off with an airbrush of basic acrylic colors in areas. Did some work on the skin in acrylics then went into oils. Used a mix of Abteilung and Windsor newton artist series oil paints. I'm officially in love with Cadmium Green by W&N! Best neon green oil paint...

Thank you Turaxa! I've been trying to do some fun and quick low effort paints lately just to keep myself going while I struggle with other stuff. It's not perfect... though I guess I'm not sure what else I could do really.

The details on the models are amazing, given that you can see individual button holes where the skirt separates over the leg armour. Amazing. The hair looks awesome, but seems a bit impractical

Thanks, My sisters of battle army used a lot of Japanese anime style heads. It is hard for me to maintain the same style with GW parts now.

I'm generally not a fan of the anime style heads (I prefer more naturalistic heads), but they do look much better (less manly) than the heads the kits come with.

I'm going to go a little meta on the challenge, and paint something that's terrified me to attempt in case I get it wrong for over a decade - a Great Knarloc. I was lucky enough to get a second one at a good price around the same time, but as it's in the same pose and some idiot (me) botched sticking the legs on somewhat, I've got some work to do sculpting on a harness and enough baggage to hide the poor joins.

Oh, and of course the Great Knarloc beat out the ever more oddly named Terran dinosaurs for a starring role in Jurassic Planet in M35, so that probably counts too right?

I painted this guy up as a test model:

I didn't want to use a lot of red, as it seems a little too on the nose. I ended up going with a Gundam-inspired paint scheme. I haven't decided what to do with the disks on the shoulder pads, and the gun kind of blends in with the body suit. Also, I'm thinking about doing some weathering on the armor to distract from how asymetrical the sculpting is

I'm really not enjoying painting these models. They are very much of their time (just look at those Donald Trump-sized hands), and I just can't seem to get inspired. That said, I don't think I've ever been defeated by a model, and I'm not going to start now.

I had honestly wanted to paint Lauka Vai for this month's challenge, but just never found the motivation to pick her up. In fact, I haven't had any motivation/inspiration for anything AoS or 40k related, as I'm uh... a round-shape deep into Marvel Crisis Protocol.

I did paint Mysterio this month, and his illusions do play off the fear of his enemies, so I think that is also appropriate.

Infinity Haqqislam "Hassassin Fiday" (with Boarding Shotgun).

"Fiday (“they who are willing to sacrifice”) are the angels of destruction, the most fearsome among the Hassassin. A Fiday is not a mere assassin, but an executioner: she acts in public and sends a public message. A man is killed, thousands are terrorized and, if the Fiday is apprehended, she will die a courageous death."

Good luck everyone!

Well, I pretty much forgot I had entered this Fortunately I'd got done mid-month, so there was just the pics to do. I didn't get round to the rest of the diorama this one is destined for, but apparently a guitar slide makes an excellent photography stand for wheels-up planes. Who knew?

Anyway, my entry for this month: 'Red-7' a Bf-109/F-4 (Trop) of 2 Staffel, Jagdgeschwader 27, December 1941.

I think the symbol on the tail pretty much sums up what's terrifying about this subject. There can be little doubt that the Bf-109 was a triumph of engineering, and the F model was widely lauded as an exceptional aircraft to fly. It also has a very appealling aesthetic - the hammer to the Spitfire's sword, so to speak. That said, I find that some scale modellers tend to focus a little too enthusiastically on glorifying Luftwaffe pilots without stopping to considering their affiliation or personal beliefs, so I chose this specific aircraft because it's pilot remains anonymous - no need to lavish praise on persons whose actions may not have been out of simple duty methinks.

That is really nice! The shading between panels and the various streaking effects really bring it to life!

How did it compare to the last plane that you did? (the desert one... Tomahawk was it?)

Post by: Warpig1815

Thanks Flinty - much appreciated!

It was another bit of a learning curve with this one because I tried a new method of preshading. Essentially, the Tomahawk (well remembered btw ) used a technique where I shaded each panel line with black, over a grey base. But it doesn't quite look natural, and the lining is too uniform to fool the eye into thinking it's realistic. So I tried a new method I found online where you take a thinned out piece of pan-scourer/scotch-brite and spray grey through it, to dapple the black primer. The effect is to create a totally randomised pattern which mimics faded spots far more realistically, and avoids any uniformity. After that it was just a case of main colours and the usual weathering, but I think it's come out better than I expected! I'll certainly be using it on my next scale model.

Some great stuff coming in, this is going to be an exciting race when the voting starts, I reckon.

After the failure of a few other projects and a complete lack of motivation for the last few days, I'm throwing in my take on Yndtrasta this month. Not as monstrous as some of the entries coming in, but to the foes of Sigmar this avenging angel must be a rather terrifying sight to behold!

I vacillated on what to enter for the first half of this month, painted this miniature in a day and then decided on a last-minute whim to attempt to base it in the Blackstone Fortress style. I think Harlequins use their masks to terrify their foes, but I might be confusing them with Howling Banshees. Anyway, here is an Eldar Harlequin being fearsome inside a Blackstone Fortress. The colour scheme is based on this miniature's illustration in the original Harlequins box art.

Finished my Waaagh! Banner. If you want to see the process pics, and the finished pics of the Nob carrying it, check out the update to my P&M blog. I figure this fits the theme because it prevents other squads from fleeing and can be used as a melee weapon in a pinch. Final pics:

As always, some great entries this month. Well done all who have finished already, and good luck to those trying to squeak in under the deadline!

I had a couple of spaces in my entry, so worked up a couple of additional gribbly bits for Stargrave. Also the previous finished pics were a bit rubbish, so retook them too

So combined set of proof and finished pics below.

Hi guys! I managed to get something painted for the challenge this month.

I painted a couple of the creepy-crawley monsters from the board game Mice and Mystics. I painted them using a grisaille method, which you can see part of in the proof pic on the spider.

Proofs:

I'd never heard of the girsaille method, but now I want to give it a go. I'll have to find something to try it on...

I didn't quite finish in time unfortunately, but I'll post my submission later today - Belladamma Volga herself. Even her name inspires fear in the citizens of Ulfenkarn...

EDIT: And here she is:

I struggled a bit with her base - I was trying to get a marble effect, but it was my first time doing it and (foolishly) I had already glued her on before painting. I think it's OK nonetheless.

I'm enjoying the monochrome-plus-red-accents theme, it's an interesting challenge to get different textures and feels without using colours.

Just sneaking in before the close. I'd intended to do a blue fade effect on the quills, but ran out of time.

Finally got around to doing the league table update

Sorry they are not as regular as they should be, hobby time is taking a back seat at the moment with too many other things going on.

Yeah, it's a very cool, fun method. I recommend watching the video by Marco Frisoni on it. It's the best way I've found to use Contrast paints, certainly. I find it very quick and easy to do, and I can draw on skills from when I used to draw and ink my own comic books when I was a kid. I do have a couple of other examples I've painted using this method from Mice and Mystics. I might post them up when I get a chance.

You have to exaggerate the highlights and shadows and not worry about smooth blends at all. It's fun to introduce a bit of stippling and even cross-hatching. Also, bear in mind that every colour you use will become desaturated as it is "shaded" by being painted over black and grey. You do get quite a natural-looking shade on things, but you don't get that mini-painting thing where you can highlight or shade by adding other colours to boost the contrast. The orange highlights on the red parts of the centipede were painted on after. If you're looking to give it a go, I think it works better on more detailed models. I can't see it working great on Space Marines unless you're planning to do a pretty weathered look and covering the armour in scratches. I don't know though, you might very well be able to make it work. Try it!

Thanks for the lead on the Frisoni video-- I don't have a lot of time to sift through a lot of YouTube content, so I appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

Based on your description, it sounds like I'll have to unlearn some of my go-to painting techniques. This will be a fun experiment.
