Welcome all to the 78th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favourite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds, ending in February next year.
This month, the theme is Rebel Scum. Bring out your rebellious heroes, devious brigands and covert insurgents that fight from the shadows to see a great power brought low from within. Ever the underdogs, these individuals don't fight fair, and often refuse to engage in pitched battle, so assassins, guerillas and saboteurs fit the bill too.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of August and will end at midnight UK time on the 31st August. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

I'm actually considering entering some Mortifiers from my Sisters of Battle army, as I've now switched over to that army as far as tournament prep goes. Two of them are currently assembled, the others are still on sprues, so hopefully I can get a window in the weather to prime them. No proof yet as I'm still technically undecided.

I’m off for a couple of weeks, but I’ll have some time when I’m sill off and the kids are in school, so I should be able to get a decent amount of time on it. Going to see if I can transpose the airbrush learning I did on the Kodiak from a few months back, just with different colours.

Chopped up a sensor array from the falcon or wave serpent kit (can't remember which one) and stuck on a little bit at the end from the same piece to add some length. Highly recommend pinning if you give it a whirl.
Update from my end, the Wraithseer had some oil washes applied and now I can get down into the details.

So a few things about these guys. I was worried that without the purple carapace, the ‘stealers would not look “finished” and not fit in with the rest of my swarm. I think they turned out OK. I wanted to keep the Magus in a similar palette to the rest of the guys, to echo the colors of the hive fleet. But people generally need more than the 3 colors I use for them. And figuring out where to add the red was interesting.
Of course, now I’m looking into GSC, which is not particularly healthy. I might be able to get a squad of guys out of the old lead, but would need a lot of new kits, which frankly is not in the budget. Still, fun to dream...

@Nevelon: I got 10 GSC models with the Kill Team box set that I still haven't painted, but I immediately started thinking, "this may be my new army..." and had to check myself because a GSC army isn't in my budget either. It's hard to have a few and not start thinking about them multiplying into a proper army though.

Handy thing of the paints being semi-opaque is that they pick up the underlying colours so they naturally blend as you build it up.

Lovely looking snow. Looking forward to seeing Naggy on his frozen throne.
Back from hols and now able to break out the airbrush. I have 3 days this week with kids at school. Let’s get this done
Managed to get the blue base coat down. After it’s hardened I’ll mask it off and lighten the grey down the sides. Inspired (like entirely) by the colour scheme of the rebel Aces a wing. Will be adding the triangle in due course
Will also see if I can reuse some of the stencils I printed for my Kodiak from a couple of months ago.
3309
Post by: Flinty
And a bit more progress today. Really happy with the greys and the panel lining. It’s not subtle, but then the gaps between panels are not terribly petite… That’s what comes of printing an X wing scale model at 28mm scale
Reused some of my previous stencils. Likely to add just a couple of red arrows to things before moving on to hairy brush for touch ups and final details. Contemplating what to do with the cockpit. I was originally going to do it black with some reflections, but that doesn’t make much sense as you should be able to see through it if it was transparent. Now leaning toward a solid coppery colour with some gold highlights. I rather like how copper goes with blue.
Engine housings next. I think I’ll keep it simple with a darker grey and with some metallic bits visible through the cutouts.

The rule of scale modelling says.... no. Clothes pegs are equal to Dakka - there can never be enough .
Some excellent stuff emerging this month. Loving Flinty's A-Wing, and I can't wait to see your speeder Graphite I'm sad that I didn't have anything Star Wars and Rebel enough to join in this month
EDIT: @ms07b3 - Fantastic work on Nagash so far. I think the sort of lead grey you've given his armour is far better than his traditional purple. Nice!
55408
Post by: Graphite
Ok.
So I'm going to explain my thought process on this, such as it is.
The speeder came with decals for warning markings etc. (fair enough, but the onion skin didn't match up with the printing properly. Horrible things) and several markings as seen in the movies - the orange band on the nose and rear of the craft. Note that Luke's Snowspeeder has grey instead.
Now, I reckoned that I could do a better job with an airbrush and some masking tape. I think I was right. But just as I was about to mix up some orange, I noticed some pink that Graphite TNG the Elder had used to do some graffiti on her brick effect wallpaper (with permission, indeed encouragement, with my syphon feed airbrush).
So I thought... why not use a different colour?
Then I remembered Pink Five and Pink Five Strikes Back
Now we know for a fact that Stacy was at the battle of Hoth. She has astute advice on how to deal with AT-ATs, so a good chance that she was in a speeder. And she doesn't wear an orange jumpsuit - she sticks to green - and has grey, black and red stripes on her helmet.
I therefore present - Rouge 1. I'm guessing she got promoted as the only surviving member of Pink squadron during the Death Star attack.
Other than the pink, the rest of the paint scheme is as suggested from the box. It's an easy model to put together - 3/4 of it doesn't need glue, including the canopy which prevents any fogging issues. The number of clothes pegs turned out to be sufficient. I undercoated with Vallejo Grey, added some VERY watered down Badab black to bring out the panel lines and make it look a bit grubby and a light front-to-back drybrush of white. Tried Liquid Mask on the canopy. This was a disaster as the Vallejo is an acrylic-polyurethane mix which stays stretchy after application, meaning it just pealed off along with the mask. Lesson for next time.
Pretty simple, pretty quick, but it'll look decent on display, I think. So I'm calling this finished!
84410
Post by: queen_annes_revenge
Nice! I like the pink Stripe. I got to say it's not finished though! That thing is begging for some streaking fluid, powders, pencils etc to really make it killer, give it that star wars look.
55408
Post by: Graphite
Snowspeeders are a fairly recent modification of the T-47, and they only just finished adapting them for the cold. They're going to be as hanger fresh as anything in the rebel inventory!
(Also I don't have any weathering materials which aren't rust or mud colours, which wouldn't fit the look of Hoth - cheers for the comments, though )
62516
Post by: Warpig1815
The trick with using Vallejo's Liquid Mask is to either tape the edges and mask the middle, or (for smaller and fiddly applications) to score the edge of it with a sharp scalpel prior to peeling. It's useful stuff, but I've learnt canopy masking the hard way as you have. It also helps to either whip the mask off while the paint is still wet and hasn't skinned over yet (Which is risky but effective), or to leave it to solidfy after a few days and score it. The worst time to take it off is when it's only touch dry - because that's when it's at it's most rubbery.
Anyway, the speeder looks great! Not sure I'm sold on the pink, but that's merely subjective. Nice work!
55408
Post by: Graphite
Cheers, Warpig, I'll give that a go next time - the mask I have is Humbrol, but I'd guess they all work similarly

For the PCs, I'm going to mostly stick to greyscale, to go with my Gravelords. The only colour on the models will be flesh tones, to emphasise that they're still alive, and a single spot colour per model - this will be different for each character, and will not be red for any of them.

Running a little late this month; I start a new job in less than a week so I've been working furiously to finish some other commitments including a bunch of commission projects before my start date. I've only just managed to clear my plate so hopefully I can squeeze this guy in the last few days of the month.
What greater rebel and outcast than the mighty Gotrek Gurnisson. A Slayer obsessed with finding his doom, Gotrek has a penchant for gold (loot), a mistrust and contempt for all other races, and a strong dislike of boats.
While I'm not actually painting the official Gotrek model, I am painting my counts-as conversion for my Junkforce Overlords, the lone brigand and wanderer, Hjarnan the Tall, who stands a full head over his more decidedly average Halfling brethren, and accompanied by his faithful companion, ... Dog.
Don't ask how Dog keeps up with Hjarnan when he's on his bike. Such things are better left to the imagination.

I just had a massive push to paint like 50+ models for my Sisters of Battle to get ready for a tournament last weekend, so in the end I just didn't have any painting energy for this month's challenge. If I'd thought ahead, I probably could have made Repentia fit the bill for rebels, but alas I didn't take a proof pic before painting them. They didn't turn out super special or anything either as I was trying to paint quickly rather than carefully, so maybe it's just as well.

@Rybrook: lol, that's always how I feel when I see one of my paintjobs full size on the monitor
@Vejut: Only one, but he's full of character! Good job on the eye.
Following suit with a pirate of my own, presenting Gold Toof da Flash (Git!)
Final Pics:
Great work so far everyone, and good luck to anyone still trying like mad to finish before the deadline!

Well I'm not going to finish Russ in time. He's almost done but needs polishing off, and the base isn't finished. I've procrastinated too much over the last 2 weeks and got distracted by a full NMM Rogal Dorn. Here are a few photos I took anyway.

Lot of good stuff turning up near the end, as is par for the course. Let’s end the summer on a high note everyone! Or winter I guess for those on the flip side. Either way, let’s see what you’ve got!

These were a slog to paint, but I think they look okay. They're still no unfinished Leman Russ though.

Not much painting done this month.
Took a proof picture of a bunch of models just in case, managed to finish three of them during the couple of evenings I was able to grab a brush.
Proof:
Finished Escher gangers:
Nothing special, just tried to get them done before the deadline.
The skin is a mess. Not that I'm any good painting skin, but still.
Hopefully I'll get more painting done on the coming months.
Great work everyone! And good luck for all who are still finishing their entries.

Here's my pair of Kitsune Scoundrels, a male Bard and female Rogue:
Painting white metal was definitely a very different experience, but all things considered I'm happy enough with them.

Scootin' this right under the wire. Imma be real honest, doing this last-minute is way more stressful than it has any need to be!

Here are my Outlaws and Marauders. Not the neatest paintjob I've ever done, but I'm reasonably happy with it.

Sorry I'm late - I fell ill at the most inconvenient time. Here is the final goblin pic. Not quite as tidied up as I'd hoped, but at least he's done.

Poll Up!
https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/800822.page
Para asked for a hand, so I put together this month’s poll. If I missed anything, please let me know.
@QAR - I know you listed Russ as unfinished, and I labeled you entry as such. I didn’t want you to have something you were not happy with representing your skills, but frankly your WIP is high enough caliber to warrant entry. So I kept in in, just with a note. If you want me to pull it I can.
