Dakka Painting Challenge Round 79: September 2021- Heavy Metal @ 2021/09/01 08:34:25

Post by: Paradigm

Welcome all to the 79th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favourite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds, ending in February next year.

This month, the theme is Heavy Metal. We want your clanking plate armour, your armoured walkers, you tanks, your oversized hammers, your enormous metal minis from the days of yore! Anything that goes CLANG! is and immensely weighty, really! As always, the theme is open to interpretation, so I expect at least one of you to instead make a Black Sabbath tribute band out of Dwarves or somthing...

How To Enter

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of September and will end at midnight UK time on the 30th September. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Hmm, what do I have that needs painting for my Soulblight and fits the "Heavy Metal" theme...

Well, what's more metal than a vicious bloodsucker clad head to toe in plate armour, riding the rotting corpse of a dragon and bursting its way out of a graveyard?

In other words, my entry this month will be a Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon. Proof to come tonight.

Also fits for the “would it look like it belongs on a metal album cover”

That's what I meant especially mith my monochrome-plus-red colour scheme and it literally bursting over some gates.

My undercaffinated brain just focused on the plate armor bit. My bad.

Now I really want to paint something for my undead army, just to mock up the pics as cover art. But all I have at the moment is some chainrasps, and they are not very metal.

Someone needs to paint up a mostly naked barbarian gal riding a pterodactyl thing.
Also a good month to break out the umlauts.

I'll paint these classic Sigmarines in Tactical Dreadnought Armour with Thunder Hammer/Storm Shield - will be going for a grimdark weathered look. Never painted SCE before but got both Dominion and the previous starter + ETB sets earlier this summer so I'm a bit excited, actually.

Any METAL listening tips for my painting sessions? I'm more of a Hardcore/Screamo person when it comes 'heavy' music, but I do like stuff like Mastodon, Baroness, Kylesa etc.

I'm in this month. But I have to ask if I can break the rules and add an extra model - because NOBLE Team isn't complete without Noble 6...

I'm unashamed to say that I love Halo: Reach. Whilst I'm a fan of all the Halos (Barring the oddity that was Halo 5's incohesive narrative), there was something about the gritty art style, impending doom and the relentless efforts of NOBLE that made it, IMO, a masterpiece of a game. Pretty much every shooter nowadays seems to lack the ability to craft a really compelling narrative in the way Reach (or Mass Effect) managed. Funny that they were of the same era.

So how better to fit the theme of heavy metal than 6 augmented demigods in MJOLNIR powered assault armour fighting to save humanities last spark of hope?

Best reason I've heard for bending the rules a little, go for it! And I fully agree, Reach is by far my favourite of the series amd definitely the best campaign. 4 maaaybe wins on multiplayer for me but not by much.

Looks like those are the files I've seen for Halo Ground Assault, did you scale them up to print at 28mm? I was printing some Halo stuff last week and nearly did those ones, but wasn't sure the detail would survive the upscaling.

Post by: Warpig1815

@Para - Thanking you muchly!

Aye, Reach was all round superb. I know Halo 5 was slated for it's lack of Master Chief gameplay, but Reach (and ODST) had already proved that Halo is more than just Master Chief and can be just as compelling without him in it (although killing off MC would be a travesty ). And I agree - Halo 4 multiplayer was great. I'm probably an oddity in that I also liked Halo 5's gameplay - it was just poor narrative that let it down (inconsistent pacing and didn't develop Osiris as particularly interesting or relatable personalities - aside from Buck).

And yep, the prints are from the Halo Ground Command FB group (I've added a link to their work in the 3D printing sub-forum for anyone interested). I've actually scaled these up to 1:46 (Star Wars: Legion scale). Considering that they were sculpted as 15mm minis, the detail is holding up exceptionally well for circa 45mm. Hell, Jorge-052 is scaled at 53mm because he was canonically taller than the S-III's in NOBLE. I've got some plans to start 3D modelling/sculpting some Halo stuff myself, so perhaps there'll be some new S-III and S-IV stuff kicking around in the not too distant future Once I learn the ropes properly

I’ve got 4 metal WG myself that need paint one of these days. Really need to get a 5th for a full squad. Don’t think they would play well with the new plastic guys.

On the dino front, I guess we all need to up our game this month. If I forget, someone remind me to slap a metal umlaut on the HB marine’s .

Time to maybe get back into doing these challenges. My entry for the Heavy Metal month will be these three classic Angry Washing Machines:

The left and middle ones are normal Dreads and will be painted in the classic green of the Dark Angels. The one on the right is a Venerable Dreadnought and will therefore be painted in the bone white of the Deathwing. Yes, I'm a madman for priming it black and then painting it in such a light color, but it'll look okay in the end- just might take a few extra steps.

I feel that! Between commissions, work and my girlfriend, I am stretched thin. Mostly though I'm distracted by shiny things. And painting tutorials on YouTube.

I just remembered why 3D printing is the way forward… just scrubbed the pile of resin fiddly bits. Took hours…

On the plus side, the resin bits are pretty good quality. No bubbles and pretty limited flash. The top hull is ever so slightly warped at the front but should be fine with a bit of heating. Now to see if the superglue will bind.

Leading to the wrinkliest modelling impact evar

Ok, I'll also chime in that we are all doomed in the face of that T-Rex

I was debating painting some Sororitas tanks or some of the new Stormcast, but then the mail arrived yesterday and now I will paint nuns with whips and hammers... if that's not fitting, I don't know what is And they are made of metal, so we got a twofer. And because I'm mad I need 11 of those painted til Saturday evening to use them as Sisters of Sigmar in Mordheim

But I'm already regretting the choice, glued the first two models yesterday and it sucked (I did use superglue, not the plastic one in the pic ). Does anyone have a better method? Pinning is not an option, was contemplating Green Stuff.

I don’t know how well it will work on metal, but sometimes with large / uneven resin surfaces I use a more general purpose glue (Uhu or similar); it fills the gaps, so it can cope with slight misalignments that super glue just won’t.

Green stuff won’t stick anything itself, at least for any length of time, but it (or another filler) could get you two flat, smooth surfaces that you can then superglue.

What superglue are you using?

The regular runny stuff or gel type, I find the gel to be the best and most accurate seems to set quicker too.
I remember years ago wrecking a metal mini when the runny glue just poured out of the bottle was not a happy bunny.

Thanks for the tips! May have some normal glue somewhere in the house and will try that. And Rybrook, I'm using the liquid stuff, but the bottle has a brush, so I can distribute it good.
Tried another mini just now and it just needs damn long to set, but worked with the superglue. It is just frustrating because glueing the metal minis on the plastic bases sets so fast

Figure I'll chime in - my entries this month are using Flinty's settings (Much obliged btw!), and Elegoo waterwashable, and they've come out really well IMO (Although, I am a mere novice to 3D printing). I guess keep an eye on my entry for an estimation of how sharp the detail ends up after painting (I make no promises for standard of painting though ).

I have discovered, totally by accident, that nail polish remover being used to strip paint will also turn superglue into a sort of gummy mush which can be peeled off easily.

@Graphite - It's the acetate. Acetate is a reactivator for cyanoacrylate (the active portion of superglue). But acetate also melts styrene and ABS - so use with caution on any plastic minis (but great for metal!).

Oh, wouldn't let it anywhere near plastic. Good to know the chemistry, though. Not sure how widely it's know that it'll strip glue as well as paint.

Must try using it next time I glue my fingers together.

This figure weighs in at over an ounce. I believe that's fairly heavy for a wargaming mini, and most of it is metal.

That looks amazingly cool Freya, can't wait to see it painted

Decided I'd push myself this month and get something decent done, there's probably people who have forgotten my specialty is conversions (or even have never scene an MG conversion) in this competition.

A looted Land Speeder, The Mek said it was too heavy to fly so they just stuck some wheels on it.

The only downside is that the Dark Judges aren't as well sculpted-- they're almost 2.5D in their flatness, which sort of counters the METAL factor. We'll see how I feel after I prep them.

Assembled the beast. Turns out it’s quite a bit chunkier than my other russ equivalents. Decided to arm it with all plasma and not bother with any modularity as it is unlikely to ever reach a battlefield

The turret chains look really nice but it’s only as I put the turret on that I realise that they interfere with the drop tanks :( oh well.

This month, I'll be painting the Disciples of the Red Redemption (and a Chaos Agent who looks like he would fit in). According to their background:
The cult of the Red Redemption had become established throughout the Old World. In the secret temples of the cult, initiates were introduced to the vile and bloody ways of the mighty God Khorne. The skin was ritually flayed from the face and torso of each initiate. Glowing hot iron face masks and cuirasses formed a new and tougher skin. At last they were permitted to wear the black robes of Khorne.

May be a bit too ambitious for me in a month - especially as I want to make the arms swappable with the new one, but I think this classifies as Heavy Metal - the previous incarnation Ork Deff Dread:

Picture includes Killa Kan and new Deff Dread sprues - although I've looted enough Deff Dread bits I have no complete bodies left from two kits...

I may need to fall back on a Bombshell Babe - we'll see how we go...

Nice work on those chaos warriors.

My brain filled in the crinkles/streaks/whatever the white lines are on the backdrop as lightning on stormclouds, in a very Heavy Metal image for them. Like they need a pile of skulls/bodies/slaves to be standing on, and some song you’ve never hard of on the B-side of the album.

I primed it grey, then used BA contrast to get a red down but the grey made it more like red gore, then I got lazy and brushed on Vallejo bloody red air paint.
so had to more layers than I would have needed if I had used a lighter primer.

Lighter primer may help or you could just use a more opaque red for the base coats. Mephiston red from citadel has great coverage.

Yeah, this is going to be a cracking round! As a reminder to anyone not familiar with the schedule, there's no vote for October as it's the annual Halloween round, so get your spookiest minis reasy for that! It's always a good'un.

Until then, I'll join Rybrook's biker in defending Baal with this Leviathan Dreadnought. I'd had this beast sitting on my desk for a while unable to work up either the courage or the inspiration to tackle it, until last week I saw a video from Trovarion Miniatures on Youtube on grimdark Blood Angels. The process in that video (link below for the curious) was just the right mix of effective, quick and forgiving, with lots of stippling and sponging to build up texture and highlights at once, and was just the kick up the backside I needed to get some paint on this monster of a mini. Most of the work was done in one looong day of painting red and black, and the rest finished in short bursts over the last few days as I raced the deadline of an impending house move next week... 'fun' times...

Pretty damn pleased with it in the end thpugh, given the circumstances and my initial trepidation. Big thanks to Rybrook for the transfers, they really helped bring it to life...or whatever the equivalent is for a half-dead Marine in a 20ft tall war-coffin...

The aforementioned video that inspired this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlf_j8CB-3k

Got some more work done.

The Boss Fight is just about finished:

I made good progress on the PC's tonight:

I screwed up the Tengu's armor and had to paint over it with black and try to fix it. Looks much better than it did about 90 minutes ago.

Still work in progress but could I get some feedback on the light placements on the hammer? First time trying nmm on something that isnt a sword so not really sure where the reflections should be going.

Great looking pics everyone, love that dread para and the other smash biker looks fantastic too!

(Seriously doubt I'll get these finished by the deadline, and if I do will obviously only enter the best 5 - working on a Stargrave crew)

Slow progress. I’m aiming for a warm-white robe with a cool-white tabard, but it’s not there yet.

@Captain Brown: What colour did you use to do the “black” on the bodies of those wraithguard? I’m trying to do a similar effect on Deathwatch.

Still a bit to go and running out of month. Still need to ink the arms and do all the edge highlighting. Plus final assembly, cleanup, decals and bases. We’ll see how much i can get done over the weekend.

And the Porphyrion is done. "The Shackled" joins the ranks of House AErthegn in support of Legio Xestobiax in it's fight against the False Emperor! (Given as AT takes place narratively during the Horus Heresy, Xestobiax and Aerthegn were at the time allied with Horus against the Emperor. Following Horus' defeat, Xestobiax was eventually purged of it's xenoheretical beliefs and brought back into the fold of the Mechanicum, although no word on the survival of the Knight Household Aerthegn).

It was nice to finish this and get it off my backlog, even though it's unlikely I'll ever actually play Titanicus again (it does look pretty as a collection on the shelf though, so no regrets). It was also a great palette cleanser to work on something like this without being too fussy with details, and metallics as opposed to NMM! Just a nice, no-pressure piece to push paint around without any obligations.

Looks like I won't quite be able to finish the VLoZD for the end of the day, but I'll hopefully be able to finish by Sunday as that's when I'm using him in-game!

The Vampire and the base are completed, all I need to finish is the dragon's muscles, skin, horns and various metallic trophies. I *might* be able to get that done tonight, but it's not likely.

I'll post it when I'm done either way, even if I am a touch late!

Finished the last member of my Sisters of Sigmar Heroines, so here are the final shots:

Still coming to grips with the new phone camera, but I like it so far. If you're wondering, why the floaty lady has snow on her base: It's not, because I forgot this will be a snowless warband... No, No, No! It is because she is channeling Sigmar's power and that brings the snow – like when the Queen of the fairies appears on Discworld

And as you can see, some hands are a bit on the mutant side. I messed up with the superglue, but luckily the next batch of Sisters was treated with more care.

Final Pic.

Not my favorite kit to build. Seemed to need more cleanup than a normal marine box, especially the backpack vents. Painted fairly easy. More edges than normal needed highlights, but they were blocky, even for marine standards, so that was sort of a wash. I’ll need to get 5 more for my company (more if I want to get my Deathwatch back on track) but these will do for now. Not expecting them to do well in the polls, as we’ve all seen a LOT of my ultras over the years, and these are just banged out to my table-top standard. But they are done and out of the pile of shame, ready to enforce the Emperor’s will on an uncaring universe.

We could never have enough of your marines, Nev. You must have a massive collection!

Also loving the orcs Maharg and MG.

Here is my entry after a few months away. It is meant to be Papa Nurgle taking over and corrupting a stormcast eternal, the rust and corrosion corrupting the shiny nmm armour. I think the idea mostly works...
It was interesting picking up a brush - my hand/eye coordination needs to be remembered but it felt good.

I am really happy to have something finished...now Maharg and MG have me hankering for some orks!!!

Good luck to everyone!

I really pushed this month to get this guy done; he's a lot more ambitious than my usual one ork boy per month, and the only time I have to paint is weeknights after work when my motivation is at its lowest point of the whole day. Also, I had to wait for 2/3rds of the month for some Mephiston red spray for the squig, so I spent a couple of weeks on the rider, still no base spray; spent a week on the base, and once the paint finally came in, it was a real scramble to get the squig done on time. I hope you like him, I really enjoyed painting and basing this one.

October is up, so get out those spooks and start haunting the place up!

We’ll leave this one running for the weekend as requested, so everyone take the time to put that final polish on the Heavy Metal

@Chris56 - Thanks. I know I’ve put together solid lists of Ultras composed of only things I’ve painted for this comp, and had choices on how to fill up the points. Overall I’m not sure if I’ve passed the 500 marine mark. But yes, I have a few Ultras on the shelves...

Yeah... at one point I was kicking myself cuz I had a week left to paint the entire armor in NMM and I was so worried I'd fail... like I almost just didn't wanna finish this month at all because of it. But... I took the plunge into oil painting NMM and i have to say, I agree with you. This look is pretty solid and I don't think I could have done it justice in TMM.

Ooo, they look so much better than the GW “golden boys” paint scheme! They look like they belong in some Classical Greek myth or something.

See everyone in Halloween month I hope!

Thank you Chris, lovely how you have made the rot/infection seem like its spreading across your model (and the base is rather good too) I need to think what I can dress my Orks up in this year for Halloween

My finish Pics (main camera is RIP so just phone shots, guess thats going to have to go on the xmas list)

Damn it forgot the grots toes!

Still got the weekend if you want to go back and fix it.

I hate pics that show all the flaws in my work. Which is most of them.

Thank you I think SCE sculpts have got so much better than the first cartoony waves, but that golden paint scheme ... yeah, well. But then I remember how WHFB Ogre Kingdoms initially arrived with this weird greyish skin-tone, so maybe GW will also eventually re-think the SCE colour themes ^^

Sorry for the late pics.
Added a touch on the backpack and took the final photos.
Thanks for watching them.

Final Images
@Nevelon: I’ve uploaded these at the last minute, only to discover that Dakkadakka isn’t displaying images because of an update. I uploaded nine images and was going to post the best five, but now I can’t see which image is which. I’ll whittle them down once images are being displayed again, but if you get around to compiling the poll thread before I do, please just pick the five you think are best.

EDIT
All fixed now.

Final images in the spoiler for size.

The gallery here was a little wonky today, but hopefully is fixed now. If anyone was having problems uploading, just pop a placeholder post here letting me know. It’s still technically the weekend here for a few more hours, and I’m not going to have a chance to start on the poll until after work tomorrow anyway. I’ll formally close this one tomorrow morning. If I notice any dead links to pics, I’ll reach out to people.

Okay, so I wasn't able to quite finish even with the extension, but I still want to provide proof that I've been working on it:

Vampire:

Dragon:

Base:

All together (in current state):

I'll add final pics once it's completed.

I just finished my dinner and am going to pour myself a drink and start putting together the vote thread. Should be about 2 hours if anyone needs to edit a post last second.

Is anyone besides me having problems seeing DV8’s entry? I’m getting dead link/server not secure errors.

I sent him a PM, but if it’s just me I can finish up the poll and post it. But going to pause it until that gets straightened out.

His hosting site has a certificate error. Until that is rectified, chances are only out of date browsers are going to be able to see them. They should work again once the certificate issue is fixed...

Thanks for getting that up. With Dakka upgrading and my own computers doing so as well, wasn’t sure if it was me or something else. Fixed with that image for now.

I’ve put up the poll:
https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/801270.page#11231067

Go Vote!

As an aside: Could people get in the habit of putting a title/description of their entry with their final pics? A lot of the time I just give it my best guess, sometimes based off of the tags/names of the pics. There are a lot of minis and games out there, and that’s even before we get into self-scupted or obscure kickstarters. For some I can go back through the thread and look at the proof pic/WIPs for clues, others less so. Some names do need to be trimmed for brevity, but a lot deserve more than I can give them. Nothing required, but it might help at the polls if your work was better described.
