I reckon I'm halfway through with this army, it currently stands at about 2313 points and equates to 178 models so far

As the title suggests it's built towards a narrative story which you can find here ---> https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/listByUser/0/130375/9.page

The Current list stands at:

HQ

Company commander armed with Boltgun and Marmorph Tuskblade relic

Tank Commander Battle cannon, Lascannon, Sponson heavy Bolters, Pintle Storm Bolter and hunter killer missile

Troops

8x 10 man squad all equally armed with a missle launcher team and a plasma gun, all Sgt's have a Boltgun and chainsword.
1x 10 man squad armed as above but with a neltagun instead of a plasma gun (this is an old metal kit and i didn't want to chop it up)

Elites

1x Command squad armed with Heavy Bolter team, Heavy flamer and meltagun

1x master of ordanance

3x Platoon commanders each armed with a plasma pistol and power sword

1x special weapons squad all armed with sniper rifles

3x veteran units (squad one - missile launcher 3x plasma guns, squad two autocannon 3x sniper rifles, squad three all members have shotguns 2x flamers 1x heavy flamer Sgt has bolt pistol + powersword)

Fast Attack

2x 5 man Rough Rider squad (squad one armed with meltagun + Sgt with plasma pistol and power sword, squad two has 2x Meltaguns + Sgt with power maul and plasma pistol)

2x Sentinel squads (squad one armed with 2x lascannons, 1x autocannon, squad two armed with Heavy flamer and sentinel chainsaw)

Heavy Support

3x Mortar weavy weapons teams

2x Leman russ tanks armed with Exterminator autocannons, one has a hull lascannon, sponson bolters, hunter killer missile, pintle heavy stubber, and track guards. the other has a hull heavy bolter and heavy bolter sponsons.

Transports

1x Chimera with multi laser, hull heavy flamer, heavy stubber and hunter killer missile.

I would agree that some of it does seem a bit randomly put together but once complete it should form a coherent story line
Theres much more fluff to add and models to build and paint (and base as my greenskin brother in law keeps reminding me)
but so far this is an overall view of the army:

I've got a decent pile of shame awaiting there turn on the workbench

and when I get round to them this lot needs repainting and the big one needs some structual modification.

currently in progress are:

2 Chimera transports

2 Demolisher tanks

Priestess

I hope you've enjoyed this first post, check out the fiction behind the army from the link at the top and i'll see you in the next post.

So I though I'd surprise my enemy with a bit of close combat, I have at my disposal a Veterans team geared towards getting up close and personal with the enemy.
Armed with flamers and shotguns these girls can move in quick, get a decent amount of shots off and then charge in taking advantage of their +1 strength and Sgt with pistol/powersword combo.

The squad is kitbashed mostly using the Necromunda Escher gang kit but also the shotguns from the Orlock gang sprues and flamers from the Catachan Sprues, the sargeant is a bit less flabouyant with her hair and uses a sisters of battle head.

Despite the fact that in the army fluff they were part of the planets criminal underworld, they are still devout to the Emperor and as such are deserving of a priestess to lead them into battle!

The main part for this conversion is one of the old metal Escher gangers armed with a autogun and pistol, the plan is to chop off the pistol and attach a chainsword from the Escher weapons upgrade sprue.

A bit of cutting, filing and fiddly supergluing later and the sword is attached, I also found a purity seal in my bitz box and glued this on to

A lick of paint and she's ready to mow down some Orks, I decided to give her Blue hair to stand out from the rest of the ladies.

In battle I expect she will be mostly attatched to this veterans squad giving it a pretty good buff in close combat, the entire squad gains an extra 15 attacks bringing it to a total of 22 strength 4 and 4 strength 3 attacks in all.

This brings the Pts up to 2,353, not a huge increase but it's a decent return on what I've paid.

Some more tanks have arrived - well I've finished painting them that is

joining the defence force are two Chimeras with a similar loadout of a Heavy flamer in the turret and Heavy Bolter in the hull, additionally they both have Dozer blades and track guards (3d printed bought off ebay)
I honestly think this is a brilliant look for the tank it looks hunkered down and solid looking like it will actually get to the destination in one piece.

Two more heavy hitters are also rolling into battle in the form of an executioner and a demolisher tank, the demolisher is set to become a Tank Commander and in a strange turn of events is equipped with plasma cannons. I don't normally field these but I changed my mind for this one. I've no idea where the end went for the cannon but I'm happy to live without it.

I've done a bit of shifting around with the Exterminators, One has been upgraded to tank commander status and this newly finished one will take up it's position in Heavy support. My overal plan here tank wise is to have one overal command tank armed with a battle cannon and have two other commanders (let's say lieutenants) technically being squad leaders over two tanks of the same model. e.g demolisher tank commander + two standard demolishers.. Again this will tie in to the armys fluff but also give it an organised structure as well as being able to field a pure armoured army list.

I'll leave with with the Exterminator squad - I've got to repaint the remaining two demolishers and then that squad will be completed.

This bring the army total up a hefty chunk to 3,036 Points in total

I think I'll give Vehicles a rest for the moment and build my Inquisitor 'Praxerena Julanz' along with her retinue and some kitbashed Scions out of cadians.

Unti next time

As someone who uses Necromunda models (and various others) in my Imperial Guard army I give this a big thumbs up.

Out of interest, how do you find Veterans with flamers perform? I always give mine meltaguns.

Here's hoping that Veterans with shotguns will still be an option when the next IG codex drops.

thank you

Hopefully the changes wont be too much in the new codex, although I'd welcome the return of platoons even in a reduced form we've got too many choices in the elites section so thing like platoon commanders need to be back to a troops choice

Honestly i've not tried the flamers out yet, possible this week they will see action, I will post on here if they do. The sniper rifles/autocannon loadout works well the can take out quite a lot of things without being in danger range killing an Ork warboss when your snipers roll 6's always surprises the opponent

This is looking great! Just found the larger pictures in your gallery as I couldn't quite see what was in the army shot.

Those rough riders are great!

Some goliaths would work as heavy weapon/special weapon experts in some of those Catachan teams, much like Brag in the Ghosts books?

Thank you

Love the idea about the Goliaths, I've got a box of AOS chaos marauders that I was looking in to converting into scratch companies so there models would look good amongst them

Managed to make a decent amount of progress on the inquisitor and her retinue (acolytes) today:

Inquisitor Praxerena Julanz

The majority of the kitbash here is mostly parts from the SOB Battle sisters squad I went for the figure standing on the rock as it's more 'heroic'?

Weapons wise I wanted to go for the standard Plasma pistol/ Power weapon combo, I did want to go for something thast would give her more strength like a power maul but as her warlord trait is bio corrosive poisons it wounds everything except TITANIC and VEHICLES on a 2+ I picked the sword for its better AP.
With the pistol I wanted something a bit more fancy rather than just a standard pistol to represent her travels across the system, I'm subscribed to the Imperum magazine so decided to rob the Primaris lieutenant of his Neo - Volkitepistol and repurpose it as a fancy plasma one instead! It fitted quite well on to a sister arm.

I swapped some arms around and chopped a few bits so that I was able to get somthing that fitted well, the left arm is the sister throwing a grenade (the grenade detail filed down slightly) with the power sword glued to the top of the hand. To get the left shoulder looking right I took one of the pauldrons and filled off the sisters logo, al thats left is to paint the old girl

Mechanised Acolyte Koine

I was planning to use the pilot from an Admech Ironstrider for a robotic acolyte but had to scrap that plan due to the legs being to far out for the figure to stand up properly and to correct it would require disfiguring the minature to much. The torso however was perfect and it fitted on to a officers leg set from the Cadian command squad with minimal hassle. I've used the Pistol from the ironstrider and the right handlebar? arm to form a base for a sword which (i think) came from an Eldar model.

The final touch was a scabbard and backpack with purity seals from the SOB set, I couldn't get the head all the way over to look at where the gun is pointing but I'm happy with it.

Acolyte Aella

Aella was a fairly straightforward kitbash, using the female jetpack model from the Orlock Masters and Wreckers box (minus the to directional jet things) and adding the Plasma gun from the Escher upgrade sprue. it's nice and simply and looks pretty good too

Acolyte Kruto

My last kitbash of the day is a mix of three things, An Orlock wrecker, Ogryn hands and weapons and an Ork Shoota. I wanted a huge bloke with over the top weapons so the guy with the reinforced arms and legs wielding a hammer was perfect. except that the -1 to hit penalty for a thunder hammer really hurts a model hitting on a 4+. The best and most over the top way around this was to add an ogryn maul and Ork shoota, the whole model feels solid and looks like he can break through walls.

I've got one more Acolyte in the works which will most likely be a standard Scion with a hot shot lasgun and chainsword either way I'll need to source the parts for this.
I'll also try to get these guys painted an update the army fluff for them too.

This brings the total points cost up to 3,151

Until next time

Painting is a bit on the slow side currently, mainly due to picking colour scemes and work.

however the Lady Inquisitor is finished in all her splendor:

I decided that Inquisitorial red would be the best bet with the chest plate being painted balthasar gold.
The sword is a blend of blues and silvers, not the best representation of a power sword but it does the job for me.

The fourth Acolyte has been built using a standard Cadian mini with a Scion backpack and hot-shot lasgun. I love the characters out of the darktide trailer and decided to use an uncovered head and chainsword (even though he can't techincallyy equip it)to represent a cross between the two guardsmen.

The guns cable didn't quite reach the power pack so I added another cable in and a bit of liquid green stuff to try and hide it.

Overall a good little team all together a decent bit of firepower and close combat mixed together wether the dice will allow it is another thing however

Once this lot has had a coat of paint I'll move on to the small army that she has command of (I really need to update the fiction on this)

Until next time

Nice work on the Inquisitor- the colors really pop, nice combination.

The kitbashes are looking very interesting as well- rock on!

Big fan of necromunda swaps myself for my feral guardsmen. I likewise have been doing custom inquisitors. Often grabbing minis from Reaper/bones like witch/vampire hunters and swapping things like condemnor bolt gun or daemon hammers on.

Love the customization here. Looking forward to see how it continues to develop

Thanks guys, appreciate the kind words

After a few days of painting the Inquisitors acolytes are complete and ready to go. (well apart from basing)

I tried to get a uniform scheme across all five models, with Mephiston Red and Grey Seer being the two main colours.
this was easy with Koine and Roman but a touch tricker with Kruto and Aella mainly due to all the extra gang gubbins they have.
My favorite is Koine especially his/it's sword probably the best sword I've done!

Acolyte Koine:

Acolyte Roman:

Acolyte Kruto:

Acolyte Aella:

Overall I've really enjoyed building these guys, kitbashing is one of my favorite aspects of the hobby. I might even make another lot to tie in with the 'mysterious light on the island' in my army fiction.

Until Mext time

Excellent Conversion work! Each character's equipment and posing really informs on the model's personality while those colors tie them together nicely

Thank you being individual characters I was hoping to create a sense of personality with each one so i'm glad I got that across.

I've been continuing along the inquisition theme recently, not another load of acolytes but rather the troops she brought with her.
the modes are built mostly from cadian models and a sprinkling of catachan parts, as I'm an avid fan of buying from ebay some are pre built and therefore in standard poses but from the individual parts I have I've managed to sneak in a few conversions too.

I decided to leave out any heavy weapons in these squads as it didn't seem right for a force accompanying an inquisitor would carry any, but plasma guns are viable so I've put two of them in (one for each squad)
For some reason I made three Sargeants when I only need two which I put down to kit bashing fever, there is also a lieutenant to act as a platoon commander with my standard plasma pistol and power sword load out.

Platoon Commander and Sargeants:

Plasma gunners and guardsmen:

A couple of standard guardsmen (and women) conversions:

All that is left to do is to paint them, possibly grey and red or grey and black I'll have to have a test first.
Either way it was great to back to cadians again and the narrative use of them means they will fit into the catachan models elements nicely.

until next time

A quick update,

painted a quick test of one of the cadian models decided to go green rather than the grey/red/back, annoying really as I undercoated everything in grey (I normally do infantry in black)

I will however try a grey and black scheme just to compare with this one.

Ugghh severe hobby burnout this week.....

Lot's of overtime at work has led to a big de-motivation for model time recently so I've only got the one squad painted and finished but I'm happy with what I've accomplished with the time:

A squad of troops that accompaynied Inquisitor Praxerena to the planet Pharous.
I didn't to do anything particularly fancy weapon-wise with them as I imagined them to be travelling light and on the move alot in support of the Inquisitor.
The sargeant with the chainsaw over his shoulder is hands down one of my favorite conversions so far

I have another squad with an identical loadout all built but I am hesitating as to wether to paint it up and include it, I think this is due to a couple of things:

1) my recent slump in hobbying has decreased motivation for the infantry
2) would a Inquisitor really take two whole squads with her? Seems a bit much maybe I should stick with the one?

I'm going to have a look through my to do list and maybe give infantry a litle break whilst I reset my modeling mojo.

Until next time

Great looking squad! You're right about that sgt with his chainsword at rest, it looks like he is calmly pacing behind his troops, a steady NCO.

I've always loved the cadian kit, with a little kitbashing you can really get some nice models out of it.

I've found that splitting up your Imperial guard painting between infantry units and smaller units keeps things going. Painting a single officer can help, but a 4-6 man unit gives a bigger sense of accomplishment. Maybe try converting and painting up a 5 man ratling team (or just normal Cadians with snipers to counts as) that could serve as your Inquisitors scouts or a Special weapon squad that the inquisitor keeps on hand to "clean up" certain obstacles.

Can't wait to see what else you've got

Sostratus defence force and the Forces of Pharous - Kitbashing Mercenaries @ 2021/11/05 21:30:11

Post by: lordbickerstaff

So a quick update on the cadians:

I gave them a new coat of chaos black over the grey and they feel less of a burden to paint now, numericaly when they fit into and army it makes more sense to have two squads eg: when I field an inquisition or armoured based army they'll take up a elite and two troops slots and when I use them in the standard Army it fits in to create a nice uniform 3 squads to a platoon commander structure ( GW we want platoons back in the new codex!)

However this post isn't about the guard or anything to do with the forces previously mention lurking on Pharous, this is about what the Orks woke up.

Having subscribed to the imperium magazine and due to the 3-2 ratio of imperial forces to xeno and chaos I decided to have a go with Necrons to even the balance
They also fit into the planets narrative very well - to give a basic overview when the Orks smashed into the planet they destroyed a huge chunk of a stasis tomb, those necrons that weren't destroyed have awakened and are very unhappy about it, ready to rise out of the tomb to cleanse the world of the lesser beings warring against each other.

i'm still writing the fluff to catch up with this but so far a royal warden and 3 warriors have emerged ready for battle:

It's a very simple paint job for these guys, I just wanted them to look a bit bashed up, scratched and a liitle bit of heat underglow

So thats a second adversary for the planets defenders to encounter and it's also a great side project for me to bounce between when the guard get a bit stagnant and I need to refresh.

Until Next Time

Thank you - yes snipers! i've got one squad already and I've plenty of spare sniper rifles so another squad or two wont hurt.
this also gives me a chance to practice camo cloaks before I do my Gaunt ghosts models

Had a really good push to get things done this week

Managed to finish painting the second squad of cadians plus their platoon commander:

Again i've thrown a couple of conversions in to the mix, most noteable the way weapons are held and a AOS chaos marauder head swap the the lieutenant ( saw it in third edition catachan codex and have always wanted to do it). My favorite is probably the guardsman with a cigar casually firing his lasgun one handed.

This brings the army total upto 3352 Pts and onto my next project - TANKS! - well more tanks.

A while back I bought a job lot of tanks from Ebay with the aim of a couple of modifications and a repaint to bolster my armour.
I figure I can do a couple to keep me occupied for the next few weeks and then when the major christmas build up overtime at work kicks in I'll switch to a slow burning project that will have to be built and painted in stages.

So the first two to be brought into the army are this pair of Demolishers:

Believe it or not these are the ones needing the most work, they originally had track guards which I've cut and filed off as I tend to leave the guards for tank commanders rather than standard tanks.

Other jobs include:

Sanding off the transfers, mainly due to none of my other tanks having them so it would seem strange for only 2 MBT's to have them.
Adding side sponsons to include heavy bolters
Respray, Repaint , Drybrush, and slap a wash of Agrax Eathshade on them

The turret on the left is one I had earlier and is already painted up and ready to go so thats saves me a little bit of work.
Once these are done I will technically have two platoons of tanks to rain death on my enemies!

until next time

Having had a repaint two new demolishers have joined the army,

I have a really simple process when it comes to painting tanks - an olive green spray paint all over, then I'll pick out details like aquilas or searchlights with the required colours - thing like crew or HK missiles I'll do seperately and add them after this. next up is a heavy drybrush using Ironbreaker and a good hour or two to let it dry off nicely with the final step of a all over wash of Agrax Earthshade.
It's not the most extravagant of paint jobs or indeed the best but I've always gone with if I like how it's turned out then it's good enough, I've seen too many people in many hobbys give up because of other people judgement.

The completion of these two demolishers finally complete my tank platoon

Front and center is Captain LeGuin descended from the famous LeGuin of the Sabbat Worls crusade
Armed with a standard battle canon/Lascannon/sponson heavy bolters loadout

the commander is a kitbash from the catachan heavy weapons and command squad sprues

to the left is the lead demolisher Lieutenant Polorkia Loaded up with a lascannon and sponson Plasma cannons
He leads a pair of lightly armed Demolisher tanks carrying Hull Heavy Bolters only

On the right is Lieutenant Taigida leading a pair of Exterminator tanks all armed with sponson Heavy bolters and hull lascannons except the older varient on the left which has a hull heavy bolter too.

This is it for the Leman Russ armour I have there is more armour to add to this in the form of hellounds and basilisks - again these really only need repaints.

December will be a busy month workwise so as previously mentioned I've picked a slow burn project - I did have a load of Necromunda conversions on the cards but I'd need to buy about 95% of the parts so maybe the first pay day after christmas I can do that. but for now here's my next project:

A second hand shadowsword I bough from my local gaming store for £40, needs a little TLC some parts like the front heavy bolters are missing as are the lascannon turrets other than those it is pretty much a fresh coat of paint!
I'll also be customising it with extra stowage etc... and I'll be losing the rear sponson weapons to make way for this.

with the two extra demolishers my army total now stands at 3,672 points

Until next time

so .............

The slowburn project isn't as slow burning as I thought it would be - well the kitbashing part isn't im sure the painting bit might

After a flurry of activity this morning the majority of the body work is done:

Starting off by removing the rear sponsons with a flat head craft knife, this went fairly well with a few bits on the top that needed sanding down to make everything nice and level

After everything was sanded down I did a test fit with the new panels, mirroring the aquilla panel on the other side. the reason why there's two new panels on one side is because the original builder didn't fit them for some reason? the top ones are on just not the sides, luckily the baneblade accessories has them so I could rectify this.

I managed to find a set of heavy bolters that fit the front of thr tank on ebay so fitting this only required a bit of filing to be done, when it came to replacing the lascannon turrets the accessories set came to the rescue again with it's full set of extra sponsons, this was a smple job of just building them really

The final touches to add were some parts from a Chimera kit to cover up the holes on the right hand side at the front of the tank, they'll need filing down to fit flush but look the part without changing the asthetic to much.
I also tried out some extra bits on and around the tank such as the sentinel fuel tanks on the turret and storage crate on the side,

Overall this bodywork mockup happened faster than I though it would and I'm happy with how easy it's been so far (touch wood). Nothings glued down yet - I'll be double checking everything is where I want it first and certain parts will get painted before I attatch them.

Until Next time

I've had the rattle cans out and the Shadowsword and it's additional bits are now in there base colours.

I had already done the tracks in chaos black by this point so decided to mask them upto save time repainting any over spill from the olive green. my daughter likened it to a tank with socks on.

after the green respray I feel like I've got a long task ahead of me! I'm currently pouring over pictures of painted models to get an idea of the final finish but will probably stick to my standard tank painting method to begin with

I would like to get the tanks name (say hello to sunshine) on there if possible but if it proves too fiddly I may just settle for painting a sun on the barrel

What turned out to be a very busy run up to christmas I managed to find time to get the big tank done.

Overall the paint job is my standard simple tank scheme with a couple greys (mostly Eshin grey) to change it up a bit - this was based and influenced by the shadowsword level in the Inquisitor Martyr game.

Once drybrushed and washed the grey gets a lot darker and looks more like bare metal than I had planned - not that I'm complaining it looks really good in my eyes

Turning my attention onto the back of the tank, this is where I took my time to make a neat paint job. Again I took references from other peoples paint schemes online and tried to replicate but not copy the style.

probably me neatest work yet.......

and for a splash of colour red feul drums!

Now I've got that big job out the way and christmas is behind us, modelling time should be a bit easier to get now. I've got a few more things on the workbench (tanks, sentinels, infantry and a Valkyrie!) so I'll see what takes my fancy in the next few days.

Untill next time

Thank you

So whilst I decide on how to approach the next big project I've decided to take inventory and figure out some odd and ends. Apart from checking the army list and how it works with detachment organasation (i'm up to about 3 detatchments now) I've also looked at my to do list and what needs to be done, this ranges from simple repaints/repairs to full model building therefore a list has been drawn up!

In no Particular order:

3x hellhounds repair/repaint
3x Basillisks repaint
3x sentinels build
Sly Marbo repair/repaint
Ogryn Bodyguard repair/repaint
Yarrick kitbash
infantry squad (s)
Heavy weapons squads
Gaunts Ghosts
Valkyrie
Kitbash Scions + tempestor prime
various terrain/ battlefield junk bits

Granted it's not actually that big of a list but I've found it's better not to get bogged down with things to do and lose interest this way.

Deciding that a Valkyrie along with the scions would be my next project I've been putting in some research into kitbashing Scion troopers as I don't really like the current models, one source of inspiration came from Pete the wargamers Eversor kill team video. I realy liked the asthetic of the van saar gangs and how the guns looked hi tech enough to pass for Hot shot lasguns but then whilst browsing on the GW website I saw the Palantine models! These look a lot more like special forces to me so I'll be looking into weapon options that will fit with the kit starting with some 3d printed rifles that are currently in progress.

Whilst I wait for the printing to finish and decide on wether to go down the Van Saar/Palantine route I had a crack at the characters on my to do list, starting with the Ogryn bodyguard, this was a 2nd hand model given to me when I got back into the hobby but it had no head.

I had a spare in my bitz box which looked particularly shouty so decided to (after some cutting ad filing) attach this to the model

so yes a simple repair and all it needs now is a repaint of the skin areas so it all matches up and some of the torso armour needs a touch up basically because I don't like it how it is now.

It's Marbo next and this was a simple glue it back together job. He will also get a few touch ups paint wise, mainly on his sword and equipment.

Lastly and the one with most work needed is a Yarrick Kit bash. I bought this commissar model last year and ended up using the weapons on other models which are now redundant in the army.

My plan is to re-install the storm bolter in his right arm (with the help of some green stuff) and 3-D print a Power Klaw for the other - Just trying to find a suitable one now

I hope to have Sly and the Ogryn repainted soon and a decision on the scions kitbash in the next few days I'm just waiting to see how these guns will print out first

until next time

One of the good thing about 3-d printing is that you can do other bits whilst its running

Both the Ogryn Bodyguard and Marbo have been finished and are ready for battle, fitting The Ogry into the narrative wont be an issue - Marbo (and yarrick once he's done) will be a lot harder! I'll just use the rule of cool for now

I've not found a klaw thats right for Yarrick yet so I caved and bought one from Ebay which I'll have to modify to look right but thats the fun of kitbashing! This should arrive for the weekend/early next week

Moving onto the Scions a box of Palanite enforcers have been ordered and providing they fit the scion look well enough I'll get the Subjugator set to represent a tempestor prime.
Also guns...........
It took about three/four prints to get it right(ish) but I've picked two types to represent a more 'special forces' look:

First up hot shot lasgun

It's the front grip that does it for me really, my only worry is that theres not enough definition to the print but I'm looking into improving it this is a good final test piece.

Hot Shot volleygun:

yes it's basically a 2nd/3rd edition lasgun with a huge ammo box but looks like a M249 in real life, thats a pass in my mind

Of course these all need to fit the Palanite models in a believeable way, luckily I do have a set of Hot shot guns that came in a job lot off ebay so if it ends up that these guns don't do the job I can always fall back on to the GW guns

finishing off with a points update, with the addition of Sly and The Ogryn (plus the shadowsword because I forgot this bit last time) the army now stands at 4,142 points. I've done a rough totting up and once the current projects are done it's going to be a good few hundred above 5000. maybe I should push more up to 6000 to even it out? No I can't buy more models - well I can but ..............

Untill next time

Look forward to seeing what you do with the Palanites.
I've got some myself and I can tell you the Scion hands and forearms are almost identical in design and fit together nicely.
However the Palanites have angled grips on most of thier guns rather than the standard pistol grip which could make things awkward with your prints

I found this to be very true, getting the printed guns to fit was harder than expected so I stuck with the better fitting (if slightly fiddly) Scions guns.

The asthetics and fits of the guns are pretty good although I'll be getting some liquid green stuff out later the fill in the worst gaps

First up the tempestors:

Just a standard loadout for these boys, mainly due to the laspistols fitting better than a bolt pistol. lore wise they're identical twins although in reality I just didn't have a head that sat right

Special weapons:

A flamer and a meltagun are all I had on the spares sprue, I had looked into a vollygun but could never have got it to fit right.

Hot shot lasguns:

You'll notice the lack of power cords for the guns, I've got two reasons (excuses) for this; the first is that these boys operste in tight spaces with lots of branches and things to snag on so a big cable hanging off will just get in the way, secondly he backpacks don't look the part on these models and I don't want to chop all the detail off these models to make them look right and then also have to simulate a cable between them and the gun.
The bottom two were the first to be built and will probably need the most filling and repair to put right. Although saying that I've just notice I didn't replace the grip and trigger for the trooper holding a gun in his left hand.

The todo list gets bigger!

Untill next time

I like the enforcers as sormtroopers. I'm doing the same thing as we speak! Check my log for some inspirational photos. I'd love to see some close ups of the hellguns on the palanites as I had severe issues getting them to fit. Ended up glueing the barrels to the enforcer boltguns.

Did you decide on a paint scheme for them yet?

Out of curiousity, not judging you...Why on terra did you go with exterminator Leman Russes?

Log checked and inspiration found - awesome looking models!

Fitting the guns was fiddly and took a fair bit of cutting, filing, and shaving down but I found that using the hellguns with hands on is a real timesaver as you can cut down to the wrist and file the angle down to match the point where you glue the Palanite guns to the arms, as Guardling mentioned a couple of posts back the design is very similar so its not so much an issue if you cut off too much.
I've added a few close ups (best I can do) to show how they fit

The fit isn't perfect even after a bit of greenstuff but I'm happy with the result and a few imperfections don't bother me. Naturally I do a test fit first checking the hand positions on the hellgun with the ones on the boltguns for the best fit.

Theres no paint scheme yet I'm still trawling the internet for ideas, I'm happy to go green but as they are more spec ops troopers possible some greys/ blacks but I'll hopefully have a decision by tomorrow.

Regarding the Exterminators - my first ever guard tank was one so I've got a soft spot for them, game wise I like to go quantity over quality with the guard so 4x S7 ap-1 D2 and the ability to shoot twice under the grinding advance rules taking that up to eight shots it starts to look very appealling

Nice work making them fit together.
As for scheme, you could try the Kasrkin way, which is just your basic infantry colours with an added camo pattern on top...

Thank you, I will delve into some old codexes.

The 2002 codex was a good source, pretty much when the Cadians (and Kasrkin) got a big shot in the arm. On page 20 there's a good shot of Kasrkin models so I've tried to base the paint job off of these.

I wouldn't say it's finished yet, a couple of areas need touching up and I overdid the drybrushing on the gun oh and a wash to darken it down but it's a good start so far

The meltagun scion is finished:

The Palanite Subjugator patrol kit arrived to and, well I had to kitbash it right away of course!

The subjugator armour realy helps him stand out above the rest of the team and helps give him a more commanding prescence, armed with a plasma pistol and power sword (standard on my platoon leaders) he fills the slot of tempestor prime well.

I still need to paint these boys however and have found that deciding on a paint scheme has been the hardest part, also i'm out of nuln oil! fingers crossed I'll get into gear and get them done soon.

In the meantime I went into a huge kitbashing session building 35 models for various squads in the army and organising them into little sealable bags which I hope will help in painting the wee buggers:

essentially what we have here are:

10man squad of cadians that I finally got round to doing
6x Autocannon weapons teams (I love autocannoons)
3x Mortar weapons teams
6x Snipers
Also a heavy bolter position with 2 3d printed dead guardsmen that I plan on using on the valkyrie base when I get around to building it!

where this all fits into the army is currently up in the air and may require a re-organise of the army list but thats a bridge I'll cross when I come to it.

Both Scion squad are painted now with Beta squad drying up after a wash of Nuln oil.

Alpha squad is all present and correct for you viewing pleasure:

First up is the sarge with a chainsword and hot shot laspistol:

second is the squad special weapon carier with a meltagun: (yes it's the same picture as before)

finally we have the standard troopers:

Conversion wise I'm happy how these turned out, the look a bit more beefy than the standard scion kit and the hand connections lined up pretty well without too much chopping and filing.
The paint job has grown on me, I must say it was the hardest part of building this squad but once it's all finished and dry It's not looking to bad.

Beta squad is pretty much done too, I'm just letting the wash dry overnight before I let the camera loose on it. the Tempestor prime still needs painting and this should be something I get around to in the next few days, he won't get a command squad made up for him as I don't have enough parts - something I may revisit in the future

Thank you Danny

I've gone through the pictures and (after finding the appropriate link) managed to get them displaying in a higher Res, I'll try to get this done across the whole thread so all the previous posts will benefit from it too.

Back to the army and Beta squad has been finished and is ready for inspection:

Firstly the Sarge with a standard chainsword and hot shot laspistol

Up next are the 3 standard lasmen:

Finally the squads special weapons carrier with a flamer:

I decided to go with canisters rather than a fuel tank as they would probably be less awkward when it comes to moving around a forest - how much of a pain would it be if the fuel hose snagged a branch in the middle of a firefight!

The tempestor prime will be up next when I get some spare hours

I take it the next tempestor prime will be a subjugator again? Perhaps you could give him a powerfist. Useless in game for s3 models, but they allways look good.

Thanks again for the kind words

I have indeed gone for another Palanite model for the Tempestor Prime although I used a subjugator model instead of the standard patrol guys. The subjugator is a lot bulkier than the other enforcers so represents a prime quite well, although I wont be adding the coat for a few reasons: getting something to fit neatly feels like it would be more work than I'm prepared to do / I just sold a lot of unwanted spares (including the scion coats) / I'm not a fan of the scion sculpts and the way they generaly look, call me old fashioned but the older Kasrkin/stormtroopers look better.

One idea I had toyed with was a servo skull rising from behind him but couldn't find a suitable part (yet)

enough talk heres the finished model:

Yep it is the standard Plasma pistol / Power sword loadout nothing different regarding the style or paintjob I'm mainly relying on the size difference to convey his leadership role

Next to one of the standard squad sargeants you can see the difference:

The base had to be 32mm as it wouldn't fit on anything else!

finishing the temestus contingent brings the army total up to 4,424 points, so looking at whats left to build the 5000 mark is going to be well and truly smashed.

Until next time

Continuing with infantry and pluging through the prebuilt bags I blue petered (made earlier) I've got a trio of mortar teams painted up and battle ready.

As always kitbashes are the norm, using parts from a few different kits and I found an alternative use for the metal tank rider model too...

I always try to add a little story to weapons team, a little diorama if you will. In the end you've got two people on a base so why not make them interact like they would be in (fictional) real life.

I should say that ground details like mortar rounds, sandbags, plants, and general basing will be done in the future along with the rest of the army

First up is is a pretty standard pose but with a standing reload rather than a kneeling one

The second one is what I like to call 'you don't say.....' I imagine the guy on the right has just said something along the lines of "the Orks are here" and the guy on the left looks away from his binoculars to give him a sarcy look.

Third and final is 'the handover' a simple pose of the reloader passing mortar rounds to the loader as he shouts at someone/something

with these teams done I've taken 6 models off my to do list and have taken the points total upto 4,474.

Aside from painting a bit of indirect fire I've revisited the Inquisition, I've no intention to use this guy on the tabletop but I did want to make (3d print) him as he is part of Praxerenas story arc.
Having found this 3Dprinted Inquisitor model on My mini factory I just had to print him off as he was a perfect representation of Inquisitor Dimitri Hayle, Praxerenas saviour and mentor throughout her early life

This was attempt number four the first being way to small, with two and three causing me issues with supports. There are still a few problems with some scarring from removing the supports but Ireckon I can fill these in or make it look like battle damage.

I will get him painted up soon!

So the next step is more infantry and probably more lore to be written as I've introduced another character who will pop up inthe future

Also I should do a Necron update!

Until next time

Yep more autocannons!

3 teams to be exact, all painted and ready for shooty time.

I've not gone to much length conversion wise with these ones, just a couple of different poses for the reloader really - the operator is still very standard.

Team A has a standing loader. The main kit bash on this is a hand swap on the pointing arm and (out of sight) the left arm is carrying a spare ammo drum, together with his leg stance it gives the model some motion.

Team B is pretty standard out of the box with both operators kneeling down, I think the torso swap is all thats changed here.

Team C, again just a swap between kits using a guardsman from the standard infantry kit to represent the loader

I have three more Autocannon teams left to paint up, two of these follow a similar kitbash them as these Three but the third is quite different as is probably my favorite so far.
These will get done in due time, for now i've been prepping some armour for a respray.
My squad of hellhound tanks are being called up to battle! First stop is a few fixes to loose parts and to put the masking socks on:

As with nearly all my armour these were bought 2nd hand off ebay, hence the exisiting paint job. All three came armed with a heavy flamer and I see no reason to change that, also the track guards were already fitted by the previous owner which I'm very happy to keep so I can charge these bad boys into the enemy and set everything on fire!

The only downside is the turret fittings, all the turrets have the older style 'plastic pin' but only one tank has a corresponding fitting which may mean i'll need to glue the turrets in place to keep them safe.

It's not a bad thing, more of an annoyance because I can't swivel the turret round making shooty noises (don't look at me like that I know you do it too!)

This brings my Army total up to 4,524 points and 28 models left to complete, I've updated the fiction to bring a third force into the war on Pharous. However unlike the Necrons I doubt I'll be buying the codex for them but I will build them just for the fun of it

Until next time

After a quiet month or so Iended up having a mass painting session (weekend)

The first bits to come off the drying line are the Hellhound tanks:

Standard painting process for these, after a spray with Montana Olive green I'll paint indivdual parts like weapons or equipment after this and then a heavy dry brushing all over with Iron breaker.
Finally a dousing of Agrax Earthshade for that dirty battleweary look.

They all look the same so Only one close up is needed

Having completed these roling firebombs I moved onto finishing my last three Sentinel walkers.

I already have four completed (one flamer two Lascannons and an Autocannon) so completeing these will balance out the squadron into it's seperate groups nicely, for modelling sake I'll show the completed ones on here to starting with the Heavy Flamer:

This guy is a one off, a rough, tough loner. The pilot carries extra equipment with him so he can carry out missions for longer and further away when needed and has done away with the cockpit cage for better visability when in the warzone. Truth be told I broke it when repairing the model (it's 2nd hand) but it's a good excuse

Next up are the three Lascannon Toting Sentinels:

To break these down I've used a few different extra bits on the base as well as different poses to make them individual and look a bit more dynamic. The Tyranid Spawn pool (i think) really fits in with the catachan predatory plant theme whereas the half barrel and ruined brickwork give the other two a ruined battlefield feel.

The Final three are all armed with my favorite weapon - Autocannons!

Again these are posed with bits on the base for the whole dynamic look:

A twig from outside gives the illusion of creeping through a forest, whilst the sentinel in the middle has just crushed an Ork that wasn't paying attention (not the best angle but that is a Ork Boyz arm) I've been experimenting with shapries on models recently hence the very green colouring.

The last sentinel is my favorite, possibly a little over dynamic? It took a lot of fiddly posing with the legs, feet and barrels but it sat nicely in the end. I've given the pilot and outstretched arm and hand as if he was shouting in anger after a retreating enemy he's been chasing "c'mon is that all you've got!?"

The Whole Squadron together:

As you can see I love to pose these models and customize te pilots as much as possible, this is mainly done by slizing the torso off the pilot model in the Sentinel kit and replacing it with one from a guardsman kit, the heavy weapons operator arms make good control sticks.

All these completed bring the army total upto 5,014 so Have hit the target I set myself two years ago!

So What now?

I do still have more to build and paint so continued expansion of the army will probably continue. whats left to do?

1x Cadian infantry squad to paint (10 models)
3x Autocannon Heavy weapons teams to paint (technically 9 models if we included both guardsmen and the guns)
6x Snipers to tidy up (filing gaps) and paint
3x Basillisks to paint
1x Valkyrie to build and paint

so not much in the grand scheme of things, the Valk will be a project though as I'll be using the doors in an open position so the inside will get painted too as well as the clear cockpit, I plan to re-vsit some of the models I built when I started the army and rearrange some units into different squads. I'm primarly thinking giving each platoon commander a squad containing an Autocannon, sniper, and a vet with another spec weapon or vox caster I want to take advantage of the better ballistic skill here. My other reshuffle would be the commanders squad, taking out the heavy bolter and giving him some more mobility with special weapons.

Hopefuly the 9th edition codex rears it's head soon and the changes I've made wont have to be undone!

Until Next Time

I've had a productive week so far - 16 models (19 if you include the auocannons) painted and finished.

First to show are the Autocannon teams:

Team 4 and 5 are pretty standard kitbashes, mainly the swapping of parts between kits, I've gone with an action arm and a weapon arm on both reloaders and the gunners are in their standard firing kneel.

Team 6 is my favorite out of all the weavy weapons teams so far - thegun has suffered a jam and one guardsman is desperately trying to fix it as the other is holding off the enemy.

as with all the teams basing and extra ammo etc.. will be added later

My second finished set of figures for the week is the 3rd squad of cadians:

yep pretty much kit swaps abound! But heres a few more individual troopers:

Bolter Wielding Sgt

Injured plasma gunner (honestly I had run out of arms)

Finally Lasman with a grenade:

These completed squads bring the army total up to 5,126 points

next up is getting to grips with green stuff so I can get the 6 snipers finished.

A bit of both I think!

I would also say that I can't bare to se unbuilt and unpainted models on my shelf so this has contributed to passing the 5K mark! of course this will probably change when the new codex drops and I do plan to re-organise the army once the snipers are done

Made a push to get the snipers finished off this week, all 6 are painted up and on their bases ready to headshot some poor xeno scum.

Most of these are made out of the box with the addition of beret heads the scions kit and kneeling poses from the heavy weapons kits. I've added as twig for one model so that his cape would fit, the other kneeling cape figure has just had it cut off to fit.

Speaking of the capes here's a better view:

the rough lines you can see are a first attempt at using bicarb and superglue to fill gaps - I never knew about this and it worked brilliantly!

Next up on the production line is the Inquisitorial Valkyrie!

I've already started building sub assemblys to make painting easier, I intend to have the doors open so I can include the Bolters which is another reason for building this in stages - I want to be able to look inside and see a painted interior rather than plain plastic! I've found some Inquisitorial symbols to 3D print I just need to sort out resizing them

Both inside and out will be spay painted grey, probably darker outside and lighter in and then the usual detail picking and drybrushing will come into play.

The base will be getting a good treatment too, I've 3D printed a couple of dead troopers and will be using a Heavy bolter, ammo crates, sandbags, and other battlefield bits to represent a position having been overun.

Snipers added brings the total points value to 5,206!

I'll be cracking on with the Valk this week so hopefully that will be the subject of the next update.

Until next time

The Valkyrie has been basecoated today and is currently drying off.

I've just printed off the Inquisitorial Iconography and took a quick pick of it, considering it's been scaled down by about 90% the detail is still there.

It measures about 8mm in height hence the blurring of detail but once painted and stuck onto the bird I don't it will be too much of an issue and I can always print it again if it doesn't suit

Great idea for the flyer base, one of those you see and say 'wish i'd thought of that!'

Cheers I've had that thought many times too

I've started painting and assembling the Cockpit today, didn't want to go overboard on detailing as it's not something that going to be seen regularly so just the uppermost instruments and then screen

The crew are fully painted however and fit in place nicely

I gave them red shoulder pads to tie in with the inquisition feel.

For some reason the kit and the instructions dont match up completely for the cockpit so what I thought was going to be a nice, clear, smudge free clear piece is now not so clear :(
The culprit was a arch of plastic supposed to go inbetween the clear pieces, its fitted now and the canopy fits much better but without the intended outcome

I'll tidy the area up with some paint but I can live with the imperfections, starting to tackle the main hold area now so will post once thats done

until next time

Progress on the gunners and the interior today:

Now I think there's some QC issues with this individual kit (I got it off ebay as a sealed box) the majority of the parts go together fine but when assembling the bigger components together nothing lines up or fit's properly, I've got gaps all over the place and I've ended up using super glue, force, and colourful fething language to get it all to fit. I started off wanting to enjoy this one but I haven't really done that at all, I'm still going to finish it though as I can't just give up on the project if I can save it at the end - great if not I might just buy a pre built one from ebay and use this one as crashed terrain

apologies for the unhappy update on this one

until next time

It's done, I've finished it - the valkyrie is complete.

I feel I could've done a better job on this but with the gaps and dodgy fitting my motivation wasn't going to last that long, fair enough the issues that presented themselves can be resolved and I'm sure its not completely down to a bad kit but I'm calling it a day before it actually flies out the window.

First things first the base:

First time using Geek Gaming Scenics base ready products and i'm very impressedwith how they turn out, next time I do a base this bit I might put any features down after the basing has been done as the guardsmen look a bit overgrown!

I haven't done anything special with the paint job here, pretty much a coat of grey with specific features picked out and a drybrush with ironbreaker and balthasar gold across most of the body. I also added the small inquisition symbol to the cockpit sides, which are a bit too small to paint properly but the desired effect is achieved.

So heres the finished model.

Am I happy with it? Yes overall, despite it being an absolute ball ache I'm happy with how it turned out - even if two bits fell off already and one of the gunners inside has come loose and is now rattling around inside.

Next time however I'll buy a pre built one!

this brings the army total up to 5,371 points

With the 'defence' part of the force wrapping up in the army lore I think i'll paint up the last couple of models left and start basing everything (seriously nothing is based its a sea of black circles) in time for the new codex to drop and an army restructure. It's also about time I started introducing the Necron forces properly now so expect to see them soon.

Until Next time

Had a quick finish for my Proxy commissar yarrick today

I main body is just a commissar I found on ebay a couple of years ago, the sword is long gone but the storm bolter makes a good match for Yarricks.

The power claw is from a Ork nob kit I think with the power pack and cable coming from a chopped up SOB power pack and the cable from a necromunda gun.

Painted up (loosely) to the late 3rd edition codex refernce picture

Just a quick one this time bringing the points up to 5,476

Until next time

Todays has seen the last of the Armour completed!

I was seriously thinking about not using these but after some thought about raining death upon my enemies from out of sight I changed my mind!

These are a bit darker than my other armour as I usually respray them an olive green then a heavy drybrush, however I left these in the dark green they arrived in (another ebay purchase) and gave them a lighter drybrush.
I figured these being artllery pieces they would stay behing the front line and not get so heavily damaged

Total points after these big guns are added is now 5,851

This wa going to be the end of the army build but I've got a surprise model on the go at the moment, I had no intention of including one of these but it came with this months imperium magazine parcel and I couldn't resist.
It's drying at the moment so will wait until tomorrow to upload a post about it

Until next time

So this is it - the last model in the army (for now)

I had no intention of having a techpriest in the army but part of me wanted to build something new and I aso wanted to try a paint to a guide for once too see how things turned out:

Definetely different to what I normaly paint but it was a good experience to have, and worthy of a place in the force

This unexpected additing brings the total points cost to: 5,886

Tomorrow I'll be getting everything out and have an evaluation of whats left to do (apart from basing) The whole army comes in at around 246 models in it's current form so i hope I don't need to do much!

So thats it - 2 years of kitbashing painting and colourful langauge when thing wouldn't go right. - The whole army in one gathering

Yeah I'd like to say it's done but we all know its not

As it stands the force is just shy 120(ish) points of 6000 which is too tempting not to get closer too, I've had a reshuffle of the roster and I can bring that total up to 5,997 points by moving some of snipers and autcannon teams around to form 4 new command squads for the platoon leaders.

The three catachan leaders will get a sniper, meltagun and an autocannon team and the cadian leader will get two plasma guns and a missile launcher. I had enough bits in my spares box to make the remaining melta gun troopers for the catachan squads but still digging for the cadian guys, I will update when everything is built.

In other news my 3d printer has been hard at work printing the torso of the Warboss responsible for the misery on the planet Pharous:

The feet are on the go at the moment with the power Klaw, gun and head to follow, next to a standard guardsman this guy is huge! a proper warboss sized Ork.

I've only got a basic printer but the detail in this thing is immense - definetely going to be a show piece!

Until next time

I swear my wallet winced at that

However the next 1000 has nearly been reached with the completetion of a command squad for each platoon commander now.

Having felt reminiscent of the old Guard structure and hoping it reappears in the next codex I managed to find enough bits in my spares box to rearrange the army to include an extra fully loaded sniper special weapon squad, 3 command squads loaded with a sniper rifle, meltagun, and an autocannon team and 1 squad with a missile launcher and 2 plasma guns.

What I loose in a heavy weapons and special weapons squads I gain in mixed squads hitting on 3+ rather than 4+, and going on previous experience when the autocannons hit home it can really surprise your opponent.

I've also managed to base these squads so techincally they are all done!

So there was a little lie there, the autocannons aren't based!

I have also updated the Company Commander, Whilst still armed with a tuskblade I decided to swap out the original sword for one out of the Escher weapons upgrade pack - it just looks better.

So the overall total now is 5950 points, I've no plans to add to the army at present but if the new guard codex drops something interesting the I cannot be held accountable for my actions

Of course I've got other projects in the background: a sizeable Necron army, SOB Kil Team and a small (500pt) Inquistor army, Oh and also looking at a mobile rouge space marine force
But for now I'm going to conentrate on basing the guard over the 6 weeks holiday and building a Revell Routemaster bus

Until Next time

Besides, we all know that there's a new codex waiting to drop, giving you a lot more options and inspiration 😉

Certainly looking forward to it! I want my platoons back! also I agree another flyer wouldnt hurt

A 2am wake up this morning saw a surge to get some more basing done, pretty much all the Catachan Infantry squads are based now making things feel a little more complete.

All my squads have kit bashed models in, mostly this is done using the Sgt,Spec weapon, and hvy weapon team but some of the standard guardsmen have the odd addition or head/leg swap
The different skin tones were both on purpose and accidental - I've said before that I buy a fair chunk of models from ebay and these are usually already painted, rather than strip it all down and repaint it I just paint on my uniform colour scheme and do a touch up or two where needed which gives me a good variation of skin tones.

There's still 30 more Cadians to do before the 'core' infantry are fully based but considering I did 80 models in 4 hours (inc teabreaks!) I'm sure they will follow up soon.

I've been going through the fluff for the army and I now have a solid story arc for how I want to carry things forward, this is going to include more models to build

All I'll say is that some SOB will feature as well as some additional units that were rescued from a scouting mission into the Ork held Northern Territory, and an unwelcome but friendly visitor from offworld.

Will have to start this after basing everything of course!

I may need to start a new thread......

Until next time

Cheers I tried to keep everything as organised as possible - referenced my old 3rd Ed codex for Army structuring.

Basing is actualy coming along really quickly, I'm keeping it very very simple - slap on a coat of Gorrila wood glue with a wet brush and then dip the model in a tub of Geek Gaming Scenics Base ready range, Give it a tap and clean the base rim up and it's pretty much done.

I've mostly been using Taiga Hillside mix but will be swapping to Patchy Plains for the Snipers,Veterans, and scions.

I did say I had all the Catachan elements based in my last post but I lied! I left my classic metal squad out as it was in the same box as the cadians so first up it's some retro metal

The three squads from the Cadian Contingent:

So yes I can now say all the standard infantry are finished, that's 4 platoons made up of 3 10 man squads and a 5 man command section - 140 individuals in total

I also got the Techpriest and my kitbash Yarrick done too, You can see the difference between the flock types here: the techpriest has the Taiga Hillside mix and yarrick has the darker Patchy Plains

The Veteran squads are next up.

Until Next Time

Veteran squads are all done as are the Scion squads:

I have three Vet Squads, each with a different role in mind.

Squad A is a more all rounder objective based squad armed with 3x plasma guns and a missile launcher

Squad B is Long range elimination armed with 3x Sniper rifles and an autocannon

Squad C are the close range shotgun sisters, 2 x flamers 1 x Heavy Flamer and a demo charge ( I only had 8th ed codex at the time and demo charges were still a thing) every other sister has a Shotgun. This squad also has a priestess to accompany it to give it that extra boost in combat.

I covered the scions in an earlier post so wont revisit their loadout but will share the basey goodness!

Going to push to get the Special and Heavy weapons done next

I'd like to point you towards the wargames atlantic spacenam figures that are realeasing any day now. I think you'll love them.

Thanks for the link going to check it out now

The head is from the guy with the harpoon gun in the Orlock Gang set, a litle bit of knife work and sanding got it to fit nicely.

Thank you

A couple of smaller squads this time.

One of the big draws to Catachan for me in 3rd edition was the snipers, I collected the standard three and supplemented the rest with other metal models like Larkin from the ghosts set and Scope from the last chancers.

I've managed to obtain the 3 catachans again but I'm still on the lookout for the others ( thats a lie I just havent looked ) and all the plastic versions I have are built and incorporated into comm squads or the spec weapon squads below:

first up are a mix of catachan/scion/cadian kits, I was a little worried about them looking too Cadian but once painted up they look the part

The second squad features the clasic metal boys, I really like the detail in the older metal model

All the support troopers are just standard models with bits from the Hvy weapons team to add detail

All the talk about last chancers has got me thinking about building a new platoon kitbashed to represent a bunch of criminals pressed into service - ooh and they'll need a commissar too!

Until next time

So far I've resisted the penal legion idea - ok I've got the last chanchers on my ebay watch list but thats it

Anyway time for some legends!

Rough riders were always something I wanted but never got round to buying back in 3rd edition (pocket money budget) and after the chapter approved creature feature with rules for xeno mounts I wanted them even more!

22 years later and the idea is now a reality. I've managed to kitbash two squads of five Riders, the first one is a xeno mounted squad using some AOS Saurus knights for the mounts, Mechanicus ironstrider lance for the spear, and standard catachan infantry for the riders. I cut the inside of the riders legs so they would fit the mounts better, the poses aren't great but they pass the 2ft inspection.

The Sgt is armed with a power sword and plasma pistol, his mount is a solid black beast and stands out from the squad of green xenos.

Not content with these (and having seen a conversion somewhere) I got my hands on a squad of Atalan jackels and the old style Metal heavy weapons teams and created a second squad of Bike mounted riders. I found that the pose of the metal legs fitted pretty well on the Jackals bikes leaving the top of the body for easy conversion, the handlebar arm is a special weapon arm sanded down at the joint to fit the line of the handlebar.

Starting with the Sgt again, armed with power maul (it snapped off whilst taking the picture) It seemed quite fitting to give him the wheelie bike.

The bikes haven't got a lance but I did buy some Skitari Taser Goads which still need to be painted and attachedto the bikes to represent the Lances.

There's not much left to base now only some sentinels and heavy weapons teams - I've covered the weapons teams recently when I built them but will included a based post for continuity.

Until next time

Basing of the current army is complete!

Over the weekend 7 Sentinels, 6 Mortar teams and 3 Autocannon teams all got the treatment and I can official say the army is done (for now)

First up a Pure Catachan Sentinel:

Autocannons:

Lascannons:

Heavy weapons teams armed with Mortars:

With Autocannons:

I don't think I'll ever stop loving Autocannons!

Well unless the new codex drops them, then I'll be very upset

Of course the army isn't finished! As much as I say it is the next part of their story Arc will bring in 8 more models which are just drying after a basecoat and I'm sure the new codex will cause a reshuffle of the army and the purchasing of new models.

I'll update things here as and when the new models are finished but until then I'll be starting a new thread for the other forces of Pharous in due course.

Until Next Time

It really is an easy to use basing method, just glue and dip and it's done! The composition of materiels used gives it a really good look too.

Some survivors have been pulled from the ruins of industry in the Ork held territory, although these guys look like they can hold their own if they need to.
Kitbashed with bits from catachan, sisters of battle and using the main parts from a gang of Cawdor Redemptionists 4 Ministorum preists have joined the army:

Battle weary but still full of fight these men of faith join the search for more survivors before the Orks can regain their strength

More Survivours have emerged from the wreckage of industry, this time in the bulky shape of a trio of Ogryns.

Although not my first 3d printed file for the army, these are the first true 'squad' that I've printed and painted ready for the tabletop.
The files are from the creator Station Forge on My Mini Factory and the prints came out flawless first time around, all painted up and based they are ready for action:

I'm going to (try) and wait for the new codex to drop before I add more minatures to the guard.
I also need to finish painting two other figures that are related to the army before I start my forces on Pharous thread (yes I've named it) and I'll need to start that before I start my 3rd army!

I'll drop a small taster of army number Three:

£22 from ebay, it needs a bit of repair and repaint plus some modification but I couldn't resist a bargin!

I believe it's time to introdruce the original rulers of the planet into this thread.

The Ra' Fos Necron Dynasty had been on the planet for Millenia before the exploration ship from Catachan arrived. The world was very different during those times with a much bigger land mass to live on and under the leadership of Hapu Tekt the Dynasty was well known for their architectural skill with the Lighthouse of Sostratus being the jewel of the kingdom.
It was during the great sleep that Pharous became a battleground for warp entities, this only ending after a jehgenesh flooded the planet awakening several Canoptek Spyders who were able to create a blackstone beacon warding off further attention from the Warp.
Mellenia passed, the arrival of human life was barely registered. It was the arrival of the Orks that awoke the dynasty, with the greenskins Rok destroying immense parts of the tomb and wiping out the majority of the dynasty in the process and destroying parts of the beacon, allowing warp energies from the newly formed great rift to isolate the planet.
However the Necrons are awake now and they have a score to settle....

So thats a little backstory to the Necron Army I'm currently building, as you can tell it fits into the narrative of the guard as will all the forces I build in the future based on Pharous.
The force is building up with the kits included in the Imperium Magazine as well as bits I've purchased from a friend (mostly warriors)
It should come in at around 2000 points when finished and the plan is to have no vehicles in the army!

The paint job is simple one: an undercoat with an Orange rattle can then a zenithal coat with a dark blue/grey can. The model then gets a Nuln oil wash and a drybrush all over with Runelord brass, if its a character it will get a second drybrush with Retributor Armour just to bring out it's regal-ness. tho finish I use Elysian Green for the eyes and weapons.
I feel the paint job leans towards the theme that the dynasty has risen from a decimated tomb subject to radiation and heat from the Orks Rok crashing into them and forcing vast parts of the tomb into the Mantle of the planet.

enough talk:

Necron Overlord Hapu Tekt

Until Next time

It's been a quiet few months army wise for me, mainly due to work and finding more motivation in 3D printing and painting the figures I've made from that.

Also I've been pouring over the new codex and indulging in armchair modelling, creating new army lists and structures - more on that later.
For now I'd like to introduce you to the royal court of Hapu Tekt:

Royal Warden

Technomancer

With the Imperium Magazine winding up next month I'll give the necrons a final burst to get bits finished and then tot up the full points cost for them, I may have to get more models (no bad thing
but I would like to have it reach 2000pts.

The guard are having a remodel at the moment so will update them when theres something final to show

Until next time

More Necrons have risen from the depths:

Firstly a pair of murder buckets, I mean Cryptothralls, to help the Technomancer with his deeds

followed closely by a small group of even more murderous animations. The Flayed ones live up to their name with some freshly skinned Ork hide draped around them

Moving on to some bigger units we have the canopteks responsible for the tomb maintenance (whats left of it) A Spyder and Reanimator

Finally the bulk of the army, the expendable masses

Scarab Swarms:

There are 12 in total for the army but these for shall suffice for representation

Warrior Squads:

Again these are only a couple from the full amount, it's an even split of 20 with reapers and 20 with flayers for the moment

I still need to take shots of the Skorpekh destroyers and deathmarks to finish documenting the army as it stands, I've three more units left still to assemble and paint and then I can plan how to bring the points up to the magic 2000!
regarding the paint job - I realise it looks a bit dull and crumbly however, this dynasties circirmstances of awakening involved a lot of geothermal radiation, tectonic destruction, and sheer destructive mass so I feel the dullness of the armour and the random Orange patches represent this enviroment well.

The guard army is still ongoing, some conversion and new units are being created and repainted. what I really need is the weather to get better so I can get some undercoat done!

Until Next Time

It's a mix of long range firepower and up close brutality for this update.

Kicking off with the firepower; a squad of 5 deathmarks ready for a bit of sniper fun

In any army I love snipers and these boys are no different, there's a good possibilty i'll be upping the squad to the full ten so I can keep an elites choice but the temptation to have two squads of five may see the flayed ones being dropped.

Next up we have something that likes to get a bit closer to the enemy in the form of some Skorpekh destroyers:

this is actually a squad of four - I just couldn't fit the final one in the shot.

Thats it for completed Necron models so far, I've still got 3 wraiths to do aswell as a squad of five Lychguard/Triarch Praetorians and the aforementioned squad of five deathmarks or Immortals.

choices choices choices!

The guard upgrades are in progress at the moment, a few more troops are being built and the tanks are getting a shuffle with some upgrades taking place and and new tank joining the ranks.
I'm also restructuring the army particularly towards the force organisation structure and looking at a swapable 500pt portion depending on the units I need

I've been focusing on bringing order to the guard after the new codex dropped, a decent chunk of my units now have now been made homeless :(

The army has also been structured to fit in with detachment sizes (something I didn't bother with before).
It's now formed of the main force in a Brigade (3,805 points), a small lightly armed Patrol (540 Pts). an Artillery based spearhead (570 Pts) and last but certainly not least the Shadowsword (490 Pts)
All together it's 5,405 total, less than I had before but not too disimilar to the previous list.

Some units have had a change with promotions and demotions made where needed

starting with the scions, both five man squads have been combined into a ten man with one of the Sgt's becoming a metlagunner and the Prime becoming a standard Tempestor and overal squad leader.

All units in the cadian platoon have gained vox casters with the master of Ordanance retraining as a master vox operator

All three veteran squads have been split into a three squad Catachan patrol platoon with some retraining as flamer troopers

The veterans were the only models that needed extra parts to be bought for them everything else was either a simple repaint or came out of my bits box.

The last picture for this post is one of my favorite tanks, something I wanted since 2000 when I bought the Imperial Armour book:

The Stygies VIII Vanquisher

managed to get the turret on Ebay and as with all my tanks I've got it cause it's cool!

Thats everything for now - I'm currently working on fnishing the rough rider weapon swaps so they can stand in as Attilans, theres also a new tank being built and another flyer on the way.

Until Next time

So before the announcement of 10th edition i had updated my biker rough riders to fit in with the attilan rough rider datasheet with the dino riders to follow afterwards.

the bikes are completed so I thought I'd share them with you all:

First up the Sergeant with power sabre:

Goad Lance:

standard riders with hunting lances:

Essentially incompatible weapons have been removed and replaced with laspistols as this was the easiest option and required the least chopping up. The goad lance biker has had a new arm (power sword from the catachan HQ kit) and painted with red rather than blue to represent a different type of weapon, I found the power sword arm with it's power pack ties into it the weapon type.
To represent a power sabre I've used an admech transonic blade - this is a theme throughout the squad as all the lances are taser goads afain from the admech range.

My thought now are to leave the army until 10th ed drops and my 5 month old codex becomes obselete

when the new data cards arrive I'll decide wether to keep the dino riders or not, or maybe 3d print some new ones that look better than my conversions

I've got two small inqustor forces I'd like to get stuck into in the meantime so i've got plenty to do whilst I wait for 10th!

until next time

Finishing off My Hydra tank today - waiting for the tracks to dry off as I was an idiot and forgot to spray and weather the track on the sprues so I'm laboriously doing it on the model :(

I did however do the gunner area seperate so I can show these bits off now!

the story behind the tank is that a trio of prisioners (hence the orange trousers) commandeered it to escape the Orks, saving the commander and his strike group in the progress. In exchange for their freedom they now fight alongside the defence force with four barrels of high calliber death.

another crewmember that I've 3d printed to stand on the platform at the end.

Once things are dry I'll finish off assembly and add a few bits of gubbins to make the tank looked lived in.

Until next time

Mate,

Congrats an an epic milestone for an incredible army - can't believe you cranked them out in such a short time frame too!

love the extra love the hydra is getting with the story and the display UI and the tank girl. Speaking of 3d printing though - where's the rest of that warboss you teased??

Necrons looking good too. The rust effects are really nice, particularly on the spyder.

Keep it up!

Hey Thank you very much

there's always something to do for the armies at the moment, I'm glad the necrons are well recieved the paint job is very simple but conveys the narrative well.

I had completely forgotten about the Ork Warboss! He's all finished and ready to stomp sum umiez!

This was my first big multipart print and it came out great, the file is from Dark Gods on Myminifactory and also has a bike mounted option in a different file.

Yeah wow, that model slaps. He's like the Duke Nukem of warbosses. Nice paintjob too, particularly the coloured metals - very orky!

Thanks for the feedback glad you like it

with the last of the Imperium magazines done and dusted I had a push to finish off the Necrons:

Starting with a squad of Immortals:

Every Necron Lord needs a personal (lych)bodyguard squad:

Finally a trio of slippery murder fellows

And thats it - all the Necrons from the collection have either been made, sold, or used in a different project. I don't really have a plan yet going forwards but I'm toying with the idea of reducing it down to 1000Pts as part of the planet narrative, which would also give me a small, transportable and elite(ish) force to game with. let's see what 10th brings

Guard wise nothing new has been added but I manage to finish and balls up the Hydra at the same time!

I made the mistake of washing the model as a whole rather than the hull and turret seperately which has caused the turret to become stuck in position,
This isn't a huge problem just a mere lapse in concentration!

Until next time!

So much great stuff in here since the last time I checked in. I like the idea of modelling the different sides on the same planet. The necrons look like they are rising out of the ground. That warboss is awesome!

Thank you! Always appreciate the kind comments

With the arrival of tenth I decided to get the lads and lasses out for a quick family photo:

I've yet to play a game but a couple of friends have taken interests in the hobby so hopefully I can throw some dice soon.

I really like the fact that we can access the rules and data cards for free, I get the oppotunity to check out how other amies play and go together which has lead to a couple of developments model wise.

On a spur of the moment I bid and won some Orlock quads, gangs, and weapon upgrades with the intention of creating a mercenary platoon for the defence force. However, curiosity and conversion opportunities got the better of me and I found myself buying a box or Ork warbikes to see if i could kitbash an 'Orklock' quad. I failed quite badly to do this but from this I was able to create something better! using both the quadbike and warbike kits, plus parts from my bitz box I managed to cobble together another three bikes for my rough riders and the basic three bike squad for the Orks.

Everything still needs painting but I want to show them off now! starting with the imperial forces:

Standard Quadbike:

Trike:

Stolen Bike:

I took two shots of the last one as I love the sense of movement his beard gives!

Moving onto the Orks lets start with another stolen bike:

The borrowed shoulder pad

The stolen brrrrrrrrrrr choppa

going on the stolen space marine gear I think these Orks have a small penchant for looting!

So after all this converting marlarky I've decided:

a) I would like to get the rough rider squad up to it's full 10 man capacity (more kitbashing!)
b) I have 6 more models to paint now
c) I might have an Ork army this by the end of the year!

Getting back to the Mercenary subject; the platoon idea may have become a small army kind of idea
I have enough to make the standard commsquad + two infantry squads with plenty of options and kitbasing and then a mad part of me decided to by a box of ambots to use as some lojack mercenary Bullgryns, and then this went on to planning a 1000 point force!
I'll leave it there as it's just an idea and I dont want to commit to more bits than I already have:

Until next time

Nice bikers, I particularly like Beardy McBeardy!
I don't think the orlocks have lasguns anywhere in their kits, will you be using autoguns or kitbashin lasguns in for the mercs?

I think he looks more of a biker than the orks! Love a good headswap

Your right, none of the orlock kits come with las weapons so i will probably stay with autoguns for the bulk of the infantry as the profile is the same.
I've probably got a couple of sacrificial models so I will give a lasgun kitbash a try. If it works then ill stick with it, maybe mix and match depending on how easy it is - they are Mercs after all so a eclectic mix of weaponry should fit in

After a bit of planning i've got round starting the Mercenary group.

So far it's just the leaders/characters, I've gone for a commissar profile for the main leader as it seems fitting to have an unquestionable figure of authority to head off the group.

The big chain axe (power weapon) helps detach the model from the standard imperial armoury

The two sidekick leaders for the man in charge are geared up as a pair of preachers, one has the default pistol and power weapon (represented by a big ol' hammer) and the second is outfitted with
a shotgun and chainsword

I do need to clean the models up before I take pictures!

Hoping to slap a paint scheme on these soon and then I can crack on with the two squads, or I might just build it all and subject myself to a big backlog - I still need to do those bikes!

Finishing off on a tangent, I've finished a 4 month side project which always helped delay the 40k side of things:

This is my 3D printed Lindwurm dragon which was a very enjoyable learning process to print build and paint.

Although I haven't learned from this and have started another side project!

Until next time
