Welcome all to the 80th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds, ending in February next year. This month, the theme is our annual Halloween special. Spooks and monsters and everything that goes bump in the night. But it doesn’t have to be all ghouls, ghosts and goblins. You can do trick or treaters, kids in costumes, or eldritch horrors from beyond the stars. How To Enter - You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama - You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting. - After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance. So What Do I Win? - Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth. These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in. How Long Do I Have? This challenge begins 1st of October and will end at midnight Eastern time on the 31st October. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days. Entries: Nevelon - Chainrasps

That is awesome, and totally fits. Better give him a treat if he knocks on your door, as his trick involves flaying you down to your component atoms.

Two of these guys were my alternate entry for September, but I decided they fit the October theme better:
Judges Fear and Fire at (poorly) based and primed, Judge Mortis has been stripped and awaits cleanup, and I even ordered Judge Death off eBay. I don't know that they'll ever see any game time, but they'll look nice on the shelf. Hopefully.

I’ve been stretching my Soul Wars box over many an October. I’m almost done. I’m going to try to get 10 chainrasps done this month and choose the best 5, and have 10 more on sprue to build. Maybe in 2023 I’ll paint something not a Nighthaunt.

I bought just the chainrasps because I like them and working with hexwraith flame is just so much fun. I think I have a giant-sized Malifaux sorrow I can paint in that style.

Haven't actually finished one of these challenges in a fair while but like a glutton for (self-inflicted) punishment I'll go ahead and enter again. This time I'm going with a Mordor Troll from GW's Middle-Earth game; he's certainly scary enough. Proof:
The model itself is not that great of quality; even if you discount the fact that when I put this model together 13 years ago I wasn't very good at assembling, the model doesn't go together that well (ill-fitting parts) so there may be a few gaps. Even my other one that I got and assembled much more recently doesn't look much better.

I set my scheme before the new technicals and contrasts came out. Starting over, I’d probably use them. I make due with an old hex pot of Turquoise Glaze, but I think the new paints flow a lot better, with improved results. But as all I have left is a few foot-soldiers, I’m not going to change etherial steads mid haunt.
WIP of the first 5. Just popped them off the painting handles. Need the base work done, and then the next 5. Once they are all set, I’ll start the cage match to choose the best ones to enter.

I’ve never entered the painting challenge but I’m going to this time. Is it ok to enter a mini I sculpted myself?
He’s a snake hiding in a scarecrow. I made him for burrows and badgers but seeing as he’s on theme for Halloween I though I might enter the competition and get him painted up.
I need to take some better pictures but at least you can see he’s not painted yet.

It is absolutely OK to enter stuff you sculpt yourself. Anything vaguely miniature/scale model related, regardless of origin is fair game. Just bare or primed a base color at the start of the month.

I'm working on painting up this months freebie Assault Intercessor in LotD theme. If that can count as spooky scary for Halloween, I'll get some pics up when he's done! Was not sure I'd be taking part this month.
I have not been overly active on the painting / forum lurking side, so I have already missed quite a few challenges this year.
I started painting my kitbashed Archon, when I realized it could actually fit the theme. Being a "space vampire" and all.
Started building him last month, but he sat on my desk for weeks waiting for inspiration. Finally picked him up a week ago and started painting.
Luckily I took a few pictures of the unpainted guy. Note, the plastic on the kit is red for some reason.
Proof:
Finished Archon (one bonus pic with the graveyard terrain from last halloween):
This guy might divide opinions, as the original model is pretty darn awesome. I just wanted to make it a bit more fitting to the Drukhari 'space vampire' army that I got going on.

For my entry I decided I would take a break form my normal stuff and do something completely different.
I found this model on E-bay several years ago for cheap because it was pretty broken and missing bits. I thought it would work for a Halloween challenge and if an Undead monster is missing bits it probably won't be that obvious or I can convert it in some way. Lets see how I get on.

Hi all, I've decided to join this month as well after finding some super sweet tiny Vampires to print. They are from Forest Dragon for anyone interested in checking them out
The mini was originally 10mm but I've scaled it up by 50%. I can take a scale shot to the "original" size later on, but belive me they are super tiny.
The plan is to give him red armor, black cloak and a few gold details to finish him up. I think it will be fun to try painting something at this scale

As someone who prints minis to sell them, I can attest that it's far cheaper to print them. However it does come at a significant initiall buy in cost.
That said, I can print a mini for about 20 cents. To put it in perspective, that Dino and the succubus *together* cost me about 5 dollars. But, the printers I have are 600 dollar printers plus the other stuff I have to make them work like cleaning and curing stations.
As to your minis, I love love love the contrast and light effects. Holy crap. It's so striking and pretty!

Apart from some odds and ends on the base having to dry/set overnight, I managed to squeeze out a pretty quick one-night paint session on the little guy. He was a surprising amount of fun to paint, especially the face/skin tones. Oh man so much fun! I also just had to do a couple of scenic shots with a desert background; too cute!! But I did include a couple of photos with the figure properly lit too.

So the problem as mentioned is the initial capital cost of buying the printer and potentially wash and cure station (which long-term is meh). But there's also the learning period where you're going to mess up prints, plus you're going to be investing in cleaning materials dependent on the type of resin you use, AND the fact that because you can literally just brrrrrt all sorts of STLs now, you're going to want to print everything. I have to restrain myself from just slicing and printing every STL I find (which can sometimes cost money, don't forget), and I almost need to subscribe and save resin as a monthly order

Will be dropping this round, had some life issues that got in the way. Amazing entries as usual from everyone. Loving the Halloween themed Grogu DV8!

Just as a reminder that with me running this month you have a little extra time, as I’m in the Eastern Time Zone. It’s a little after 8 PM on Saturday where I am now, and I’ll probably not close it until the new one goes up Monday morning. So about 36 hours left.

Final pics, Nemesis stage 3 and Adult Gravedigger from resident evil 3 board game. Tried hot glue instead of my usual method for the blood and not really too happy with it but its all experience

I had hoped to raise a full quintet of undead and ethereal types for this one, but RL was very busy this month so I give you a solitary spooky space marine - a Damned Legionnaire.
Full final images and the proof picture in the spoiler below.

Nice work! Love the use of the game board to frame the minis.
Veeery late to the party with my own pics, and not 100% happy with it, but given that I only started this guy last night it'll do! I am at least pleased with the armour and at arm's length he'll look plenty good enough to terrorise some DnD players on the board. Model is a Necromancer by Lotd of the Print, it's quite large (that's a 1" base, so probably similar overall proportions as a Stormcast but obviously the pose makes it bigger overall).

Some quick contrast chainrasps for me this month
I really struggled with the photos for this one, could not get the colours right.

Wow - whilst my entry was not as quick as DV8 or Maharg, this was an experiment in getting quick results for me. The idea was to have the lighting as a feature but it is quite difficult to see in the pics due to the angles....hmmm. The piece is not quite finished but for the time spent on it, I am mostly happy with the result.
Good luck to everyone and see you next month.

Happy Halloween Everyone
Bedtime now so posting up a quick finished shot
I'm going to try and use the natural light tomorrow to get a better shot on my phone since it hasn't been working as well with my light set up.

OK, that should be a wrap! Brushes down. If you need some daylight to grab better pics I’m not going to be able to start the vote thread until at least this evening, but more likely tomorrow. So you can grab them and post them as needed. But everyone should start work on November’s contest: Catch me if you Can!

Thanks Nev, I did need the daylight
I'm really proud of this work and think its probably the biggest model I've painted to date. I like the effects I manged from the transition on the wings to the marbling on the stone grave. I wanted to give the dragon a very ancient bone and rusted Armour look which also turned out well IMO.
Bonus, I used the Dakka auto adjuster on the image below, do you think it looks better or worse? In the one above the Red is a little dull compared to RL but in the one below its over colored, In RL its somewhere in between

Great work MG! I would say your pics are better. You can't really make out the marbling on the dakka one as that area is too bright.
