Howdy.

[Warning: slight nostalgic waffle ahead]
This weekend I acquired something of major hobby significance to me. I got my hands on the full #91 issue collection of the DeAgostini Battle Games in Middle-earth magazines. (And for a damn good price I might add!)
It was these part works magazines that plunged me deep in to a duel love of Lord of the Rings and painting miniatures that has now consumed me for more then half my life. However being a young man at the time with limited funds, I wasn't able to see myself through the entire run of BGIME and finished up my collection at issue 33. It's long been an a burr in my sock that I was never able to complete the series and I've always kept an eye out for people selling their collections off. Over the last year or two of serious searching, I've seen a number of people offering up the full thing, but never at a price I thought was particularly reasonable. Even most individual iissues re-sell for roughly $4-5 AUD on the likes of ebay or gumtree and the later, less common issues go for upwards of $10. Insanity.
But jump to the present day and I finally landed the full collection at a price I was more then happy to pay. I only had to drive a 3 hour round trip to get it! I'm not complaining though.

Now i'm only missing two of the special edition issues (Fellowship of the Ring and Return of the King) and the collection really will be complete. Those are quite hard to come by though. I'm not sure I've even seen the RoTK for sale anywhere before to be honest.

So, what is the point of this thread?
I thought we could talk about those miniature White Whales of ours. Our Hobby Holy Grails. That piece you'll never stop chasing until you lay hands on it.
Is it a single model that was never available in your country or something very limited edition that is now gone forever? Maybe a specific collection of minis such as the old Skullz techpriests. Are you looking for a rare version of a historical figure that a certain company only produced in limited numbers? Or could it be a specific issue of White Dwarf or some other wargaming magazine you're after.
Or maybe like me, you've recently acquired a hobby holy grail and just want to tell us about it!

So Dakka, what is your miniature White Whale?

I'm re-living my teenagedom and trying to gather the metal Space Marine and other RT/2nd. Ed. minis I dreamed of having way back when. There's a bunch of obscure stuff in the list that I will probably never find but I got lucky and picked up a couple of Assassins that I always wanted the other day.

If there had to be one white whale amongst them it'd probably be one of the more obscure Assassins, like the one with power sword and bolt pistol. I haven't seen that come up for sale locally in the last 18 months of looking, and only once otherwise from the UK that I missed.

Depressing when some of them are $200 per mini on eBay, but I guess that's what happens when numerous people have disposable income and want to relive their youthful hobbies.

For me it's Spartan Games era Dystopian Wars models, and in particular Kingdom of Britannia and Prussian Empire land models. I've got a pretty good collection going, including some of the more rare stuff from just before they went bust. I'm missing about 10 models to complete the set I've got in mind.

There's a great trading page on FB that runs hot and cold (cold at the moment). Everyone on there is fantastic and the prices are reasonable. I'm hoping to pick up the last few models I need sometime soon. I'm ok with being patient.

I'm such an impulsive buyer that the things I'm chasing change a lot, but I manage to grab the big ones more often than not through hunting. Was meaning to get into Guild Ball for years because I loved the look of the Alchemists, but then the game went OOP and it looked like it wasn't going to happen until recently when I managed to find the entire set (plus all the Ratcatchers as well, another team I liked the look of) and for more than reasonable prices as well. The big things that I dream of are just that- big things that are too expensive new to even consider and almost certain to not be found 2nd hand. Liberty Prime to finish off my Brotherhood of Steel minis, a Warhound Titan, Imperial Knight army are all things that I can't really justify even though I'd love to

Geez, I guess I have two.

One is the FW Ork Fighta Traktor. FW's ork plane has no landing gear, so they used to make a silly little resin cart that evidently pulled it down the airfield for takeoff. It was pulled by the old Gorkamorka wartrakk. It's a totally useless model kit, but it's literally the only FW ork model I don't have. They seem to be insanely rare, probably because nobody bought them in the first place. I would love to get one.

The other would be the Armorcast Gargant. I saw one for sale like a decade ago for $400 or $500 and thought the price was ridiculous. What a moron. The damn things go for $1500+ now. I didn't realize until recently that Armorcast only made like 300 of the damn things. No use for it in a game either, but I'd love to have one of those too.

Of the two, I'd be happier getting the traktor, just because it would cost less and be a lot easier to store.

Yeah, the Armorcast Gargant would be a real find at a good price.

My White Whale was a Leman Russ Destroyer, but I finally managed to pick up a second hand one on line that just needs a new coat of paint. Amazing how hard it was to find one.

Battlefleet Gothic ships for Orks and Chaos. There's good alternatives for Imperials, and I've got proxies in mind for Eldar, but there's nothing really fitting the aesthetics of Orks and Chaos in the 3rd party market.

Aside from that, I am managing to pursue my "ideal" 40K from when I was a kid with some success, just getting small 2e/3e sized armies for each of the factions I'm interested in and not worrying too much about the current game status.

Congrats on picking up the Battle-Games mags! I only got hold of mine a few years ago (wasn't into LotR when it first came out), and was astounded at how good they were, once you got past the first few issues. So many great scenarios for limited model counts, terrain ideas (Golden Hall!) and painting guides. I only have up to about #70, and like you am missing two of the specials.

(I have a vague memory that the Battle-Games mags weren't released in the United States, which may be why LotR SBG didn't really seem to take off there back in the day like it did elsewhere in the world. Or am I misremembering?)

I recently managed to harpoon my own White Whale: copies of the two expansions for the 1990s original Warhammer Quest. (Lair of the Orc Lord and Catacombs of Terror.) I didn't think I would *ever* own those--Catacombs in particular goes for silly money. But mine were missing the miniatures, so I got 'em at a very reasonable price. Unpunched no less, with the cards still in shrinkwrap.

Mind you, I've now spent several times that amount on proxy miniatures to actually play the adventures, and am now drowning in plastic skeletons.

Of course, all of 90s Warhammer Quest is a White Whale. I started with just the three rulebooks and nothing else about ten years ago, and have sloooowly pieced together a playable set. My next hopeless quest is to get hold of the ludicrously pricey character packs. And the elusive cards for those extra room tiles in White Dwarf. And...

Edit:

For me it's the Dwarf Juggernaut (GW, WHFB 1e?, about 1984 or so).

I saw this thing in the Toy & Hobby Shop at the local mall when I was a kid & loved it. I didn't have enough $ in my pocket & Mom wouldn't forward me the difference. Said I'd just have to save some more & get it the next time we were at the mall.
Several weeks later I had enough $, we went to the store, & ...... It was gone.
The person working there was clueless as to what I was looking for & this wasn't the type of store that would special order you anything, just some mall store with a generic name. :(

In the decades since? I've seen this thing numerous times on EBay. For a ridiculous price, often shown clearly missing the same part, & having the soft blurred details of a recast.
Nope, not paying that price for an incomplete mediocre recast. I'll find a real one eventually.

And so, almost 40 years later my quest continues.

I currently don't have a real white whale but there were only two models that I always wanted to have despite I didn't play their factions: one was Morathi on pegasus and the other one was the Chaos lord with plasma pistol and axe, which I first saw on a WD as the subject of a painting challenge and fell in love with it.

We're not talking about very expensive and very rare models but to me buying stuff I wasn't gonna play has been a big deal for at least 15 years, and being OOP they weren't really cheap either.

I got both of them at some point, and after some time I've also got a full dark elves army so poor Morathi is not all alone anymore and can lead a full force .

So the chaos lord is the only model I currently own that doesn't have a full army of his faction around him.

Now the Morathi I own is in finecast and I've never really been 100% satisfied with that, so maybe my white whale is to find the same model in metal. Complete and with an accessible price though.

I've had a few over the years including:

- The original Emperor's Champion, the limited one where he's holding his sword in a two-handed pose. Managed to get it on eBay for £15, no idea how. I guess I was just lucky.

- One of the old Lucius Warhounds. I'd so love to get another to have a proper hunting pair but the Lucius was discontinued years ago. While there are a few still floating about they're far too expensive to justify it.

- In the world of Airfix I've always wanted to get a copy of the TSR-2. It was a unique UK bomber built in the 50's, essentially Concorde carrying nukes instead of passengers. Airfix produced a limited run back in 2006 and that was it. I've often seen them go for close to £200 online but managed to snag one for £80. In addition to that I was looking for a set of brass upgrade parts for the cockpit. Every single shop around didn't have any, even the original company that produced it. I eventually found one in a tiny French model shop, but if there's another one available anywhere in Europe, I'll genuinely be surprised.

I have an Armourcast Revenant, and would love a Warhound to go with it... but I stopped trying too hard to get a hold of one since I'll likely never get around to building them anyway.

Likewise on the Dreamforge Leviathans. I've always really wanted one of the skull face ones, but the few times I've had the opportunity to pick one up I ended up passing on the assumption that it'll just gather dust.

I have been having fun slowly collecting RT-era 40K models, though.

And I'd kind of like to one day pick up the original Nagash, just for the sake of having him. He's a piece of Warhammer history for several reasons...

I’ve got most of the rules for 2nd Ed Epic, with a set of Titan Legions proving prohibitively expensive.

Think I need to eBay camp to snaffle up models when they show up for a more reasonable price. See, I’m something of a jinx. Typically just as I get a nostalgia collection going, the prices start to rise.

Oh yeah, that reminds me of another white whale: the fabled FT03 box of plastic 90s wizards.

So much HeroQuest / Warhammer Quest / WFB / etc. potential in that box.

And just mentioning it here has probably given it a price hike due to increasing awareness and demand. Whoops.

I probably have loads of these as well, but in the last few years I've gotten these 4 I'm quite happy with:

- The limited edition Anghkor Prok Kroot Model. As a someone who loves Kroot and the mercenaries list back in 3rd Edition, this was a coup. (Still haven't taken it out of the blister!)
Also means I now own every non-Forge World Kroot model that was available.

-Both the Truthsayer and Dark Emissary from the WHFB 6th Albion campaign. Again, limited edition, still in blister. Got them so cheap on ebay I had to pinch myself.

-A very sizable (Over 3000pts) Dwarf 6th edition army, with the awesome metal Dwarf rangers, miners, thunderers and slayers. Only had a small dwarf force back in the day,
but always wanted an army like this. Now I just have to paint up the whole bloody lot!

- At least 2000pts of WHFB 6th Ed Chaos Dwarfs (from the Ravening Hordes Book). Another thing I started back in the day but have finally gotten around to. About half
painted too!

From the "toy box" campaign they did? Yeah, that box, the Adventurers box, and the Dungeon Denizens box were what I looked up a bit ago. NONE less than $40 US on ebay. NONE. I wouldn't have thought they were THAT sought after.

Nothing super old or rare, but I would like to get some of the final Guild Ball releases (particularly the Shepard's Guild, some of the 3rd wave Captains and some of the resin resculpts they did).
There's tons of the old 1st edition stuff still floating about out there, but very little of their newer, resin releases seem to have escaped into the wild.

Wowee! Went to work for a few hours and this thread took off like I wouldn't have guessed.

It's great too see peoples thoughts on this and interesting to see what people really want. I was expecting to see a bit more of the obscure BFG ship or Inquisitor 54mm genestealer style white whales. Or the occasional Warlord/Manta type thing. But it's refreshing to see some more "mundane" white whales.

Thanks! They really are excellent resources. The painting guides are good for beginners. Basic, but not patronizingly so, and still yield respectable results. Some of the special scenarios and chapter approved-esque rules like the wizard duel for example are really fantastic. It shows some thought and cares was given to what is essentially a newbies guide to wargaming. Far more then what has been given to the recent conquest/mortal realms partworks. The terrain guides for me though are the truly stand out thing about them. As you say, the things like Meduseld or the border fortress in a later issue are magnificent guides.
(I have a vague memory that the Battle-Games mags weren't released in the United States, which may be why LotR SBG didn't really seem to take off there back in the day like it did elsewhere in the world. Or am I misremembering?)
It was never realeased in the US according to my knowledge. It would certainly lend credence to why the game isn't/wasn't as popular over there. I'm really hoping they do another partworks for Middle-earth after the apparent success of Conquest/Mortal Realms.

I had the chance to snag that mini about 3 years back from a 2nd hand bin at a Mindgames for $10. I mistook it for a regular shaper though and it wasn't until I got home and checked that I realised my mistake. It was gone by the time I went back there though the next day. I was pretty livid with myself over that. Someone got a hell of a bargain though.

I didn't have to wait decades for it, but when I started into the hobby some 2 and a half years ago, I found some pretty cool terror bird cavalry models from Blight Wheel that I wanted. They offered 4 different poses but two were out of stock. I wrote them if the other two would come back, and they asked me to be patient. Some time later all 4 were out of stock. I kept writing and asking them again and again when they will be back and the answer basically was "might be never again, sorry". But this year, suddenly all 4 were back in stock and I immediatly got them.

Dunno if I have one. Theres definitely been in the past (I have three Marienburg Landships ), but currently I don't think I have anything other than some odds and ends to round out my Dust 1947 collection. I have an almost white whale in the form of an army of Praetorian guardsmen, but I don't love the minis enough to ever pull the trigger, frankly I think I could convert a better looking army myself (or sculpt and 3d print one as the case may be).

I find I've been prone to manias. I track down some old model I like and fall in love and decide I need the whole line of them. And then more. And more.

A few years ago it was Space Fleet, I painted like 5 of the old dagger shaped ships, and wanted more and well...

That's a few years old, the collection has at least doubled.

Then it was Arbites. I always liked the lil Judge Dredd rip offs (the first models were literally JD models with green stuff) so got a small kill team.

And well...

Those are from last year, more has been added since.

As anyone who's seen my blog knows I am not a great or even good painted but I do make up for it in quantity.

Then there's the boxes of RT metal and fantasy from around the same time...

Death Korps of Krieg. A lot of money, and I don't actually play 28mm 40K, so I would need them for something else. But they are stunning. Apparently, some of the main kits may have gone, like the infantry firing kit, so it is probably permanently a dream it seems. All this is probably also true of a Cadian Hostile Environment army, though I have 30 of them stashed away.

Two white product I actually got were the two dark elf dreadlord which were holding the baby dragons. They came back as a made to order and I picked up both. Was annoyed I missed them first time around.

Mine was a classic Slaanesh Champion (the one with a two handed sword and bladed tail)

I have painted this at least three times previously to various degrees of bad. But that was 20 years ago. I wanted to get it again and finally do a good job.

And I learnt something. Metal is a &(%#^ to paint! I guess I’ve gone soft, but I found it really annoying and didn’t get that nostalgia buzz I wanted.

It was better in my memory.

Still, useful lesson learned!

I had a few Eldar white whales I finally caught (like the original pointing Farseer, the unhelmeted female Guardian with plastic arms, and the original infantry-sized Avatar).

When I started my Brood Brother (traitor Guard) army in 5th edition, I lucked out and got a ton of Hyrbid models along with some female RT models I always wanted. But there's one I always wanted that I was never able to get: the Ork Genestealer Hybrid Freebooter. Every time I had people stake out eBay for me, they always got outbid in the closing seconds.

So yeah, I always wanted the Skullz Techpriests and a few other little things, but I never went full Ahab until I saw the Ork Hybrid occasionally popping up on eBay.

Mine was the male Wood Elf Spellsinger(which didn't really see release here in the US during Storm of Magic) that had a very Druidic look. Ended up getting one off of Amazon of all places--from a storefront in Vegas that didn't know what they had.

Now I've been off/on hunting for a Thunderbolt Pilot from FW to replace the one that a squirrel stole out of my spray booth one day many years ago.

Cool idea for a thread! I started in the hobby when I was a young teenager with Eldar. I fell in love with the Vostroyan range of the Guard (hot off the presses at the time), but settled for second hand Cadians for being significantly cheaper.

Fast forward 16 years and four editions and I managed to secure a Vostroyan army on eBay! In the process of stripping and painting now.

My white whale is related to this: I’d like one of the old monopose plastic dwarfs from any era before battle for skull pass, but especially the Warhammer quest dwarf with the winged helmet. I’ve got old monopose elves and lizardmen. Just need a dwarf or two. I don’t ever see them for sale, though. I’m not sure I’m searching under the right name.

My White Whale: I almost got my hands on a factory sealed box of rogue trader beakies. I think there were 30 of them in the box. Got outbid at literally the last second. The worst part was I saw them re-listed by the guy who must have won them about a week later at triple the price. He didn't even want to play with them... I still keep an eye out for something like that to show up again, but I doubt I'll ever find them at a price point that's not beyond my reach.

For me, it was the Necron Lord that you got in the army box (or free with WD, I can't recall which). This guy:

Spoiler:

I didn't get into the hobby until a few years after this happened. At the time I was desperate for him, you only saw in on ebay in two ways: the people who knew it was rare and wanted big money for it ($40ish, lol "big money"), or the people who didn't know it was rare and sold it cheap ($10-ish). For some reason, I decided that I could only get him cheap and paying more than $30 for him was cheating. I had every Necron lord except this guy, and that hideous first one that I refuse to buy.

This took years. Years. All to save like, a lousy $10 bucks. Finally, after about 4 years of this, I found him and split the difference. I submitted an offer at $20, and got him.

What did I do when he arrived? Immediately glued horns to him and made him a Pumpkin Lord.

Spoiler:

I don't know why i am like this

Started playing around 1997. At first I thought, "I could never play Chaos, they seem too detailed." ...and then I fell in love with Chaos. Still cant remember how that happened. Eventually I found copies of Slaves to Darkness and The Lost and The Damned in the early 2000s. Then about 6 years ago I had to sell them to buy Christmas Presents for my kids. I'd love to get them again, but haven't had the spare funds to begin looking.

There's probably things I've wanted, but at the moment I've mostly let them go. To a degree I think maybe the PP Sea Troll kind of reigns as the thing I'm just proud to own and have painted to a level I'm really pleased with and I'm not aching for big impressive centerpieces since. There's little models that are neat, but I've painted a lot of them as well. I guess I've chased enough whales to reach the point where I've realized that if it won't be available in a few months, its probably not any more special as the shiny that will be available in a few months.

It's very strange reading through this thread looking at all the things people are searching for or have searched for - the Necromunda Farseer, Warhammer Quest stuff, the Limited Edition Necron Lord - as for most of them my immediate reaction is "Yep. I have that." or "I've got one of those.". I really have been doing this for a long time...

I look on eBay every now and again and see the prices that 1st Ed Space Hulk expansions or Warhammer Quest hero packs go for, and it just boggles my mind. And I thought that I paid a lot for those things when I got 'em 15-ish years ago. My biggest White Whale was the Skullz Tech-Priest set. Picked them up ages ago, and for about half the price they were going for on eBay.

As a result, my White Wales are things that really never were; miniatures that were never released and are therefore next to impossible to find.

The first doesn't quite fit that category, but it is rare nonetheless: A Veteran Space Marine available via WD subscription. Getting him would let me complete the Veteran set from that era, or rather I though it would, but as it turns out there's an even rarer Veteran that was never released. Can't imagine I'll ever see that one.

I'd also love to get a bunch of the original Cities of Death sprue:
Spoiler:

There was a selection of Scavvie models for Necromunda that were never released, including a fantastic Scavvie King and a Shaman model. Saw that Shaman on eBay a few months back. I think it was at around $400-500. I want him, but that's a lot of money.

Then there's the one that got away, something I had almost secured in an eBay auction back in the early 2000's, but distracted and missed it. I'm talking about the Imperial Guard Command Tower:
Spoiler:

Finally, there are two Inquisitorial Acolyte minis that I desperately want. Again, saw one of these on eBay for stupid prices:
Spoiler:

Mine was the original Regiments of Renown Harlequin set - I had it back when first released, still have some of the minis I painted back then but most of the set and box long gone. I got a fairly worn copy of it not too long ago and it satisfied the nostalgia bug pretty well.

I would say now my "whales" are that I would love to get the box of Skarloc's Wood Elves and the original Terminator Squad box. I had both back in the day (1989 ish I think - god im old) but long gone....

This is a dangerous thread. I keep thinking of more White Whales. Like 10mm Warmaster armies. I managed to score a 1000pt High Elf army for a great price a while back, but that's as far as I got.

There's a few Warhammer Quest plastic Dwarfs on eBay right now, from UK sellers. Just search 'Warhammer Quest Dwarf'... and scroll past all the more recent Silver Tower / Blackstone Fortress stuff that has nothing to do with Dwarfs. (Always a nuisance when looking for the original version.)

Had a look for other monopose plastic dwarfs, and got good results by searching for 'warhammer dwarf plastic oop'. (Again, mostly UK sellers.) The trouble with these, though, is that people usually sell them in big regiment batches, rather than just one or two.

(Note that I'm using the Aussie eBay site and you may get different results.)

One of the problems-yet-perks with us Aussies is that because of our small population, the supply of rare stuff is limited downunder... but it also means the demand is limited. I've occasionally picked up rare stuff from local sellers on the cheap, because they couldn't find anyone willing to pay the silly prices they could have asked for overseas and nobody wanted to pay for shipping from Oz (like AD&D Planescape box sets).

Actually that reminds me of another White Whale I had for a long time: the third of the old Jervis Johnson boardgames, Doom of the Eldar. For some reason it was much pricier than the other two (Battle for Armageddon and Horus Heresy), and shipping those things from the UK isn't cheap. Searched for years for an affordable copy and got nowhere. My luck finally came in a few months ago when, yep, a local Aussie seller put it up for a much more sensible price than the overseas mob were charging.

I know a guy who has that command tower assembled on his shelf.

I love those old cardboard terrain kits and am still looking for one of the earliest ones--the Ork Outpost, which came in a plastic bag, with balsa wood!

I bit the Wizards of Morcar bullet years ago, after weighing it up for a while and deciding that it would annoy me forever if I didn't. Did it the old-fashioned way: put aside a bit of $$$ each payday for a few months like I was a kid saving pocket money for a Super NES game. But the prices were merely 'exorbitant' back then, not 'utterly insane' like they are now. Never did get the US hero packs.

I think I once had the strangest White Whale of anyone in this thread so far, though: A single monopose Empire Halberdier from 4th edition WFB. I wanted him for Sir Ragnar in HeroQuest. They should have been frickin' everywhere and dirt cheap. And yet I somehow I could never find one. Drove me crazy.

There's a few things I wish I had/could drum up the spare cash for/justify the expense.

Space Hulk Deathwing/Genestealer expansions. A couple more of the RT Inquisitor models. Space Fleet Tyranids. Full set of Confrontation Elementals. Few more ships for Man O' War. Quantum Zor-Magna for Monsterpocalypse.

Just some random nonsense-shaped holes in the collection.

I wonder how do folks feel about 3D printing to meet the need? There are sculptors you can commission from for ~$200 and have an unlimited supply of the model of your choice.

Or is more like collecting comics and you want the actual item, not a reprint or recreation.

No worries!

I've been doing a LOT of Warhammer Quest searches over the last few months, so I've seen my share of Dwarfs...

Shipping on eBay has been bonkers for a while. Try to avoid any seller with the Global Shipping Program option. It will get to you fast (well, pre-COVID, dunno what it's like now)... but it's ludicrously expensive. Anytime I see a seller with that, I groan, because it's going to cost more to ship the darn thing to Australia than it would to buy a plane ticket and fly over to pick it up.

About the same as I feel for recasting with these sorts of things.

I want these things because they're rare, not just to have them. I like collecting rare minis. I could have got a resin recast of the Catachan Colonel whenever I wanted - I know of at least 2 places I could get one right now - but I wanted the real one.

It has to be something major for me to make an exception there, like the "Plague Brethren" GW did, that was just 3 plastic starter set Plague Marines that they sold for a massively inflated price.

As a seller you can choose to use their Global Shipping Program rather than post internationally direct - you post it to eBay who then forward it on. However they just make up a price and don't offer combined shipping.

I'm a collector, but of armies, not of models. This is nice because I generally don't' chase rare individual models, but instead I'm trying to collect a hundred kind of hard to get figures. I've collected a full praetorian infantry regiment (mostly painted) and 85% of a kasrkin company (all painted). I'm currently working on the all metal sisters, which aren't super hard to find, but some of the parts get a bit tough.

I think, as most people do, my nostalgia currently rests on things released during the first few years in the hobby, which for me was 2001 or so. I'd say my top picks would be the metal models of the time, like Inquisitor Karamazov (in metal) or the original venerable dreadnought.

For me, at this point, my white whale is a 3d printing model designer who wants to re-create old 2nd edition/rogue trader era sculpts of OOP gw miniatures.

I'd absolutely adore a faithful recreation of the Juan Diaz daemonette and Seeker models, but unfortunately it seems while there are people who will rush to perfectly copy 1:1 the latest primaris space marine thingummy within 5 seconds of its first preview image, nobody is interested in remaking those old nostalgic models that would be less likely to get instantly copyright whacked.

Closest Ive found is a few admittedly quite nice HD-re imaginings of old OOP Necromunda, Mordheim and Imperial Guard stuff, and a few fun things that made me chuckle that were usually new-style models in old-style poses.

Like i have a file that is a new-style GSC patriarch in the old Jabba the Patriarch throne pose.

Also Mad Donna Ultani ??? from Necromunda, although I got her NIB from another DakkaDakka person a couple years ago. I tossed all my Escher into simple green when she arrived....they have been in the simple green solution for the past 3+ years now , I'm almost afraid to try and pull them out now.

Reminds me of something Andy Chambers (I think) once said about Squats in 40K: an unpopular joke army that didn't sell while they were in stores, but an instant classic the moment they were gone.

I recently made the mistake of getting rid of an old 5th ed WFB Skeleton Warriors regiment I wasn't happy with, thinking they were dirt cheap and I could easily replace them. And I don't mean 'got rid' as in 'sold'. Or even 'gave away'. I mean rubbish bin during a clearout. I don't play WFB and had just assembled the regiment for fun since it had been sitting in the cupboard for about a decade. Didn't realise that they were now going for top dollar. Probably because that kit formed the basis for the Tomb Kings regiment, so they now always get listed as 'TOMB KINGS' even though they're just the regular clown skellies with the round shields.

Shipping to Australia from the US has become really expensive in the last couple of years (predating COVID), whereas shipping from Canada, the UK and Europe hasn't been too bad. Not sure why.

Regarding eBay's Global Shipping Program: I got git by the GSP postage once when I bought some hard-to-find Planescape books from the US. I was willing to pay the frankly bonkers shipping price (like $40 AUD) because it was a rare item. But I bought two books, and didn't realise until I hit checkout that GSP doesn't let you combine shipping, even though I contacted the seller about it. So I ended up paying something like $80 AUD for postage on two softcover books.

(Still worth it though. Uncaged: Faces of Sigil is a great read.)

The other annoying thing about GSP is that it also adds import duties on top of the postage--but it doesn't show you that in the postage estimate on the eBay search page. And it lists it separately on the item page. So you have to remember to add it on yourself.

I don't mind the GSP program existing as an option, because it's pretty quick to deliver internationally and you get regular tracking updates. But it's really irritating that it's a take-it-or-leave-it thing. If the seller decided to use GSP then you either cop it or you don't buy from them. If you could choose between the GSP and regular postage for a particular item, it'd be much more sensible, like choosing to pay for express postage.

/rant

But my posts are turning into 'Zen's list of stupid misadventures' so I'd better get back on topic. (My funniest successful postage-related adventure was getting hold of a metal LotR Cave Drake from the US, long after GW had switched to resin. Even with the redonkulous international shipping, it was still cheaper than buying the Finecast version from GW Australia.)

Anyway, I just remembered another White Whale: the Eldar Attack expansion for Milton Bradley's Space Crusade. Didn't know that existed until I was an adult. I don't think it was ever released here in Australia. Still go looking for it now and then.

Actually Space Crusade itself was a White Whale of mine for many years because it was my favourite boardgame as a kid, but I butchered most of the minis for 40K once I started playing that as a teen. Ugh, what I did to that awesome expansion Dreadnought... It took me a looong time to rebuild my old set. Had to buy three incomplete copies to get all the bits together. And then it turned out I didn't like the game all that much now that I wasn't ten years old anymore. Oh well. (Still love HeroQuest though.)

If I had one thing I was going to chase like this, it would be to acquire all of the GW Inquisitor models, as well as all of the acolytes and stuff that go with them. I'm not referring to the 54mm Inquisitor game, I mean the 40k Inquisitors. Some of the old sets that include them and their retinues pop up on eBay occasionally, but at some steep prices. I like those models because they are very characterful and fairly unique.

So far I only have a few Inquisitors; just Eisenhorn, Greyfax, and a generic Finecast one with a power sword and bolt pistol. I also have one set of followers that includes an acolyte with a plasma pistol, a cherub carrying a book, and a servo skull. Lots more models out there for me to collect eventually, whenever I have time and money to spare.

I collect the Nippon range that GW put out in the mid '80s, and I'm at 220ish of the 250ish minis that they made. The minis themselves aren't that hard to get, although over the 5 years I've been buying them the average price per mini has gone from £1 to £8, my white whale itself is a piece of paper relating to the range. In the 1983 Aly Morrison samurai boxed set there was a yellow 4 sided pamphlet with rules and background fluff etc, and this simple photocopy is my white whale.
4 of the boxed sets have been through my hands and none have had the leaflet. I've only seen it once on ebay but that was in an obscenely overpriced set.

One day it will be mine though...

The two models that have been sitting on my 'white whale' list the longest would have to be the Aquila Lander and forgeworld spaced landraider armour for about ten years now. The latter I was able to cross off this year after an ebay reseller put up a fully tricked out model in amongst a dozen other regular banged up LR listings, all at the same price.

I picked up the CD codex and a small army some time around 98-99 IIRC, right before they were squatted chaos dwarfed. Nostalgia wasn't strong enough for me to later invest in any of the forgeworld chaos dwarves but I couldn't resist picking up the bloodbowl team during one of GWs 'made to order' promotions.

As much as people rightfully crap on Finecast, there genuinely were a handful of models where it was better, assuming you won the loaded-dice crapshoot that was casting quality. I have a Ork Nob with a Waaagh Banner in metal and I wish I had gotten it in Finecast - it's very topheavy and every time it tips over- which is a lot, despite gluing a nickel in the base - the banner breaks, even with careful pinning. I love the model but I wish it had a larger base.

I also wish I had gotten my metal Thunderfire Cannon in Finecast. Another nightmare assembly.

I still kinda want one of the metal Thunderhawks, and kick myselk a bit for not getting one of the ones that were up on ebay some years ago.

Much lower on the list, a full squad of th OG Grey Knight Terminators from Rogue Trader.

White Whale implies I’m searching for it. There are a number of things I’d love to have, but don’t want to open the pandora’s box that is eBay to get.

2nd Ed Ultramarine codex,
some of the old metal Eldar (and not the stupid old ones, but 3rd ed stuff) like one more WG, and some aspect squads
handful of old marine vets in metal. (guy with the bolter is a big one, love his pose)
TDA Calgar w/HG in metal.
A nid or two in metal for the nostalgia. Like an old screamer-killer

If I put some work into it, I might be able to find them. But honestly, most of it would just be to warm the shelf, and I’ve got plenty of stuff for that. And I know that if I start trawling for stuff, I’ll find all sorts of bargains that are too good to pass up, and the Pile of Shame does not need the help.

Just the regular Epic version of that Gargant is a White Whale for me. Literally. Because it has to be the white metal (pewter) version. From America. Which, as discussed, has crazy shipping these days.

That's not too hard to find. A 2nd ed Ultramarine codex with a cover that actually stayed attached to the binding for more than five seconds, however... I don't think they exist.

Oh, here's another one of mine (sheesh I've got a whole pod of White Whales by now): The 4th ed WFB Undead army book. But not just the regular 4th ed WFB Undead army book, awesome though it is. I mean the revised edition from 1998 that was quietly put out without GW mentioning they'd updated it, shortly before the Vampire Counts 5th ed book. It supposedly updates the photos of the models to match the revamped GW Studio army (no more flying cabbage Zombie Dragon) and allegedly includes the Circle of Blood characters.

It took me ages to get hold of the regular Undead book after several false leads and sales that were cancelled at the last minute--the hardest of all the original army books to find. And then I found out that it wasn't the only edition of that book. I tell you, it's like being a necromancer looking for the definitive copy of some ancient tome.

A few reasons: 1. I got him cheaper from eBay, and (importantly) 2. I didn't realise that GW still sell him.

My white whale... is the AD&D Maztica box set. I own a digital copy, and owned the actual box back in the day... but between a move from Maryland to Venezuela to Puerto Rico and back to Maryland, it was lost.

I see them on Amazon and Ebay, but usually at $150-$250 or more.

Its not like it was super compelling or very well written, but I really liked it and still want it.

Mine's probably an Armorcast Reaver. I had the opportunity to get it back in the day, but let myself be talked into something "more sensible" - An armorcast Baneblade, Shadowsword and Tau battleforce box. I've seen a couple show up on E-bay, but every time it comes back to A) Where would I put it and B) I'd never actually use it in a game.

Also, I'd like to get my hands on the 1st edition Rogue Trader rules. I used to have a copy, but it was used by our group so much it quickly fell apart. Again, haven't pulled the trigger because everything but my 8E rulebooks are currently in storage.

I *almost* got rid of my copy, but changed my mind at the last minute and it's on my "campaign world" shelf. It is a pretty dodgy product, though - always hope it will be revisited and redone sometime in the future.

Yeah, mine still has its cover, as does the one I got in a bundle of other books a few years ago. I don't recall ever hearing of any binding problems with any of the 2nd edition books, although the RT books and the 3rd edition rulebook were notorious for it.

The SoB codex is the one 2nd ed codex I never got around to picking up. Back around 5th edition, 2nd ed books tended to go on eBay for $5 a pop, because nobody wanted them, and I kept putting it off. Then 2nd ed nostalgia kicked in, and they started selling for ten times that, so I still haven't picked that one up...

A complete Space Crusade, with a couple of add-ons. I had it untill 2005 when I sold it to make space for other games. Regret it now.

As far as models go... Probably a 25 model Leopolds Leopard guard, which I had back in the days. The LGS were selling them for 9 dollars a piece in some sort of blue promo-box ca 2003.

The owner claimed GW had promised him the boxes were SW blood claws which would quickly have sold out. I bought 3 of Leopolds guard, 2 Riccos Republican guard and 3 of Al Mukhtars desert Dogs. I cant recall if the banner were with them, but otherwise the contents were similar to the regular box with the artwork. I ditched the surplus commands into a drawer and made a couple of big units. Really loved the pseudo-realistic style of those models. Sadly sold them later, and regretted it ever since.

Did something similar with a large group of metal grave guard and 15 teutogen guards. Felt they were taking up too much place.

Sigh.

At least I learned from the experience, and never buy something unless I have prepared storage for them somewhere in my gaming 'library'.

But the real white whale, would be 30 diaz daemonettes. I missed the window when they were reprinted by gw a few years ago.

My White Whales aren't super exciting, however, I got 'em - the Iron Hands Firstborn upgrade blister (ready harpoons, I think I've found one lads) - just bursting with character, really fun little add ons, and I love anything that lets you really push just how kitbash-friendly the classic marines are, how you can so easily make each member of a unit really distinct and unique, which imo is such a satisfying reflection of the lore. It'd be great to get one in metal, but I don't think the metals were even being sold anymore when I got into the hobby, and it was always one of those things that I planned to pick up next time...

And then it got pulled. :(

My other White Whale, and quite possibly one that is simply lost to the sands of time, never to be found again were the HH Blackshields transfers. There was such strange, intoxicatingly exotic and unknowable iconography there, and I loved how the symbology told these odd, incomplete and ultimately untellable visual stories. Really wanted to make a Blackshields kill team, or perhaps use them for a traitor raven guard successor chapter with Night Lords bits (also while we're on that topic, Shadow Captain Corvidae! Good God what a pretty mini, honestly the gold standard for FW marines in my eyes, really admired the face on that miniature for the longest time...)

Probably those are the two big ones for me. There are more minis than I can think of that I'd like to get my slimy goblin hands on, but in terms of ones that I've wanted for a long time, and then when I was able to get them didn't act soon enough, and simply slipped through my fingers.

Lies!

I never had any problems with the binding on other 2nd ed books, but our Ultramarines Codex's cover quickly detached... and every time we bought a replacement, its cover turned out to be loose too.

(By 'every time' I mean once. It's a highly scientific dataset.)

The 2nd ed Tyranid codex we bought at the same time has survived everything the world can throw at it short of a direct meteorite strike.

Is a White Whale something you're always looking for but is just out of reach due to price/inconvenience? Or is it something you'd like to have in theory, but simply never bother to look for because you immediately write it off in your head? Most Forgeworld stuff is like that for me. Ever since FW started doing its thing, I'd take one look at whatever their latest vehicle was and think, "I'd love to have that, but I'm just a humble peasant who knows his place," and forget about it.

My 2nd Ed books have held up well. Can't say the same for RT/3rd Ed WHFB/Warhammer Armies. 3rd Ed 40K also needed to have the cover reattached more than once. Realms of Chaos books were treated with love, so they endure, despite being of the same "spit n' prayers" pedigree as the first books.

My original 3rd ed rulebook popped its binding within a week of buying it. Given how widespread the complaints were at the time, rather than wasting time getting it replaced I just pulled it apart and put it in a ring binder.

Picked up another from eBay a couple of years ago to have one on the shelf with the rest of the collection, and it was in surprisingly good condition.

I recently got a 3e rulebook from a second hand bookseller, very reasonably priced and in really good condition.

I'd love to be able to get all the old books for reasonable prices, even as good quality PDFs. I know there are scans out there, but I'd be really happy to pay GW for high quality scans of old editions like WOTC does for D&D stuff.

They do seem capable of converting them as they released clean PDFs of the witch hunters and daemonhunters books back during 5th edition, albeit edited to remove some of the content. It would suggest that the 4th and 5th books at least are not in some obscure unsupported format.

Since I'm the one who sent this thread off the rails, I'll make a valiant effort to hoist the train out of the off-topic canyon by saying that the 4th (or 5th) ed WFB High Elf army book should be everyone's White Whale if they don't already have it. The background/history section in the front is just that good.

I played a lot of WHFB in 5th edition (the one with the lizard/bret starter, pretty sure that’s 5th) and agree that the army books were great. Same design ethos as the 2nd edition codexes. Packed to the gills with art, lore, stories and pictures. I’ve got a number of them on the shelf. Worth having if you like the faction. Or even if you don’t for the read.

Mine are old Warzone models. The first is the Armorcast Bauhaus Grizzly. I never even knew it existed until well after the game died. One never turns up when I have the cash to spend on it though.

The other two are the scenario boxes they put out. The Venusian bridge and the Bauhaus bunker, with the cardboard terrain and models. I managed to find the brotherhood cathedral a while back for dirt cheap.

The rumor is the Grizzly's mold was dropped early on and only a few were made. Prodos (I think) did a new version of it a few years back if that interests you.

And of course there's the Japanese plastic model of Miyazaki's Bad Guy No. 1 which (ahem) 'inspired' it. They're not exact copies, BG1 is much longer, but have almost identical weapons and design.

Sadly the prodos version is a 'normal' size tank. Next to the Armorcast it looks like a baby version.

I have a couple.

I spent years looking for the metal spaced armour kit for the original Rhino, then won to sets in one week. Both cheap as they were stuck on two badly painted tanks.

A warmaster Titan for epic, the old fanatic alt emperor kit. Last one I saw sold for £500!

Armoured High elf archers, not the plastic ones from the 4th edition started the metal ones. They come up on eBay a lot, but for £25+ for a blister of two, making a regiment out of my league for now.

This was a really good idea for a thread topic, and I've been mulling it over since the beginning as nothing leapt immediately to mind.

Then tonight is struck me, I've actually spent most of the Covid period whale hunting.

Guild Ball is probably amongst my all time favourite mini games, so news of Steamforged's termination of support was a real blow.

Those of us who decided we wanted to continue locally realised that it would probably be best to have plenty of options to spare to allow others to hopefully join in.

I took this, let's say, quite seriously...

So now I own nearly every faction, including any alternate sculpts I prefer, and I'm well on the way to having it all painted, as well as all the game aids necessary to lend them out completely without the other player needing anything other than some measuring widgets. If I was really pushed, I'd maybe prefer the resin Butchers Guild models instead of the metals I have, but that's just a nice to have.

So for now I guess the fleet is docked until the next hunting season.

About 20 years ago or so, some enterprising fella sculpted and sold Necron scorpion models that fit in with the design vision of the original metal necrons from 2nd/early 3rd edition. It was not an official model but it was cool to have back when necrons only had lord, immortal, destroyer and scarabs.

I had one once and ditched it in one of my frequent clear outs. I'd like to find one again and not pay insane amounts for it.

I would love to get my hands on a NIB first production run of the Sector Imperialis Realm of Battle Gameboard.

The first production run came in a nice black canvas carry bag and the tiles where level (sat flat) with crisp detail. Sadly, subsequent production runs came in a lame carboard box, muddled details and the tiles all warped (took on a bowl shape); a clear sign that the molds were shot and way overused. I bought one and it was defective, all six tiles horribly warped and unusable, GW replaced it and again, all six tiles horribly warped and unusable. I had to get my money back because they were unable to provide one that wasn't horribly defective. Not surprisingly, the product was removed from the GW webstore just a few weeks after this ordeal.

So I may have jumped to a conclusion; the Pacific Rim Heroclix figures I ordered showed up, although missing two figures (the Cherno Alpha and the Striker Eureka) and having two doubles instead (the Gipsy Danger and the Coyote Tango). I noted this to the seller and they've sent out what I hope are the proper figures. In the meantime, my oldest noted that there was no Otachi included in the set. I check online and apparently no Otachi was ever made. They have a Scunner and a Raiju, and a Coyote Tango(!) but no Otachi? Also, Slattern is tiny, but still, NO OTACHI?

Another one would be the 6'x4' metal table frame that GW stores used for their game tables circa 2010.

I saw some pictures of an LGS's play area just last week, on Reddit IIRC, who was able to acquire some of them so I know GW sold them off.

Should I ever come across one I'll be sure to make the owner a very hard to refuse offer.

Mutavore would make more sense than Coyote Tango. I guess they had to have matching sides or something? I think I would have gone with the jagers, and then swap out Raiju and Scunner for Mutavore and Otachi. And made Slattern much bigger, like at least Leatherback's size.

Scuttlebutt is that they were considered too "Cadian" and they wanted to differentiate "Stormtroopers" from the regimental stuff when the 5E book dropped. Purportedly, the design work on Scions' models began around then.

I've had a couple over the years, from the top of my head here's a few:

Some I managed to acquire over time:

- The exclusive Empire Fire wizard from the army box. He never was that hard to find, but like a lot of things mentioned here, more often than not was just overpriced. Was just a matter of waiting for a good one, eventually got it but it took a while.

- Tyranids Armorcast monsters. Never had them back in the day, but really thought they were cool! When I got back in the game, and decided what to do with my army (ie; buy everything), I wanted them back again. Bought my first Exocrine at a relatively normal-high market price, but then found a lot of 3 different ones for cheap and managed to score them!

Some I wanted to get, or had a chance to get, but couldn't for whatever reason:

- Some unreleased Tomb Guards. Saw them on eBay at some point (during 7th or 8th edition, so TK were not the crazy stuff they are today) for "reasonable price" at the time (maybe 30$ a pop or something?). Nearly bough a bunch of them (even though I was suspicious they where "recast"), but ended up not to. They would just be cool conversation piece, no real regrets about it!

- Forgeworld Fantasy Elemental. Was not a big fan of the sculpt on both models originally (Fire and Beast elemental), but by the end of 8th edition we were all going bananas with monsters and units and armies (before the whole exploding thing), and I wanted them more and more. They had dissapeared from the FW store though, and barely popped up on eBay when I looked for them. Thankfully we are kinda out of Fantasy now because we never migrated to AoS, so I don't have any urge to hunt them now (still would like them as collection piece if anything).

Then again the Stormies in the 5th Ed book were already distinct enough, plastic version of those would have worked well.

For the longest time my white whale was an AT-43 mini, the Succubus Golgoth walker. It was a rare release for the Therian faction that never saw much distribution given how quickly Rackham folded after it was released:

Eventually found someone selling two of them on eBay. It was not cheap, but I got 'em.

The current Scions aren't bad models, they just need a second weapon option and to be 10 to a box.

I love the kasrkin, and I have a ton of them, but I think I know why they were cut. GW had stated around tat time that they wanted to increase the gothic/imperium weirdness in the IG. Hence bringing back sanctioned psykers and priests. Kasrkin, while delightful, are arguably the most “near future” sci fi models in 40k. Most regiments, with the very notable exception of the vostroyans which cane out not too long after, are pseudo historical. Nothing looks super gothic.

Oddly, while caving in to demand and making plastic Krieg was a very savvy move, in a way it’s actually a step back. Even though krieg aren’t actually historical, they feel very grounded in verdun and Stalingrad.

Adding another White Whale to my long list: The Clan Skryre Rat Ogre for Mordheim.

Why? Because years before Mordheim ever came out, there was a Skaven mini-expansion for classic Warhammer Quest, published in White Dwarf. It was quite detailed and was probably salvaged from a cancelled boxed Skaven expansion. One of the special character models you needed to play the White Dwarf adventures was a 'Rat Golem', a unique steampunkified Rat Ogre that acted more like a deranged machine than a living thing. At the time, no such model existed and players were encouraged to convert their own.

But... has there ever been a more perfect Rat Golem than this guy from Mordheim?

Spoiler:

I'm making do with a regular old Rat Ogre with wires stuck on. One day, though... one day...

With the recent return of HeroQuest, the other one I recently remembered isn't so much a White Whale as a Sea Serpent or a Kraken. Semi-mythical, lost to time and probably nonexistent. Bear with me...

Back when the original HeroQuest was released, one of the UK expansions was the 'Adventure Design Kit'. It came with blank maps and stickers so that you could make professional-looking versions of homebrew Quests (instead of the ones we kids scribbled on photocopies back then). On the back of the box was a photo of an example Quest you could make using the stickers. It was called 'The Plague of Zombies'.

Curiously enough, it wasn't just a bunch of stickers randomly stuck on a map by a marketing team. It was an actual playable Quest, with logical room and door layouts, notes about treasure chests, and so on.

Unfortunately, since it was meant to showcase a work-in-progress adventure, the map was incomplete and the last couple of Quest Notes were blank. It was almost a bonus official adventure... but not quite. Most importantly, the final showdown with the boss monster was left out.

However... in a promotional flyer that came with some other HeroQuest products, there was a small photo advertising the Adventure Design Kit. And that photo showed an apparently complete 'Plague of Zombies' Quest with all the missing information filled in.

Of course, the photo was too small for the text to be legible.

Somewhere, somewhen, a designer on the original HeroQuest came up with a complete Quest that was never released, then stripped it back to 'incomplete' form for a photo. What was in the original? Someday, somehow, I still hold out hope that it will turn up in a filing cabinet or desk and this ancient mystery will be solved. And there will be much rejoicing. By me and about six other people who care.

(Incidentally, I've tried actually playing the existing portion of 'The Plague of Zombies' and it's an insanely hard slog with a ridiculous special gimmick. Just the sort of thing a ten-year-old kid would come up with. Well done to the designer. )

So at some point I want to pick up the new High Elf dragon. And the plastic mage/ noble kit. It bothers me that the dark elf dragon lord kit is still for sale on the GW website but the High Elf one isn't.

But it wasn't highly sought after. The net was full of bitching and moaning as to the contents of that box. Not sure if that somehow miraculously changed and those monopose models became the envy of all players.

Couple of additional things I'd like to get my hands on....

Space Crusade. I've got Advanced Space Crusade, but I never did have the original Space Crusade - we got Heroquest instead. Would love to get my hands on an original copy.

Mutant Chronicles Siege of the Citadel board game. I had this a long time ago, but the models were atrocious, "not GW level quality". I was a fool getting rid of the game, it was fun and had some interesting pvp within its co-op play.

Dark Future. At the time this carmageddon game from GW came out, I was into Car Wars and Dark Future looked too "lite" of a game in comparison to the simulationism (or so it seemed) of Car Wars. I wish I'd picked Dark Future up.

My Hobby White Whale would be my third copy of Wiz-War.

My first copy of wizwar was custom made using hirst arts blocks and it was stolen from my storage unit only a month after I completed it.
My second copy was stolen by a girlfriend after we broke up.
My third copy is still in the process of being made, except this time using Archon fantasy dungeon tiles to make the board and Reaper minis for most of the minis in the game.

Each time its heartbreaking to have to redo it, since its hundreds of dollars in materials and hundreds of hours of my time to accomplish the final result. But the alternative is not having wizwar in my life, and that simply isn't a sane option.

Maybe the gods will have mercy on me and allow me to keep this third try since I have put in so much effort already in all these attempts.

Shaggoth, Dragon Ogre Champion of Nurgle

i first saw this model in my old copy of Realm of Chaos Lost and the Damned. i have spent the last 25+ years looking for any information on it or how to acquire it. the most i have found is that it was a conversion from golden demon winner Ivan Bartlett that currently (as of 2014) was with someone known as Orclord in the US. the original model the conversion was based off seems to have been released in 1987 and is still impressive. i see them occasionally show up on ebay in various conditions but are generally quite expensive. sadly even if i were to acquire one i would be hesitant to do anything with it due to my lack of ability to do it justice.

As a fellow Wiz-War fan, reading that caused me physical pain. Good luck with the third copy.

(I have the now-OOP Fantasy Flight edition, which has its flaws but can be modded with classic rules pretty easily.)

Kid_Kyoto wrote:

This also caused me physical pain Until you've mind-controlled someone into hopping back and forth through a wall of fire until they kill themselves, or walled up someone else in a cupboard on the first turn (only for them to go on to win despite being unable to move for the rest of the game), you have not known the true heady beer and pretzels of gaming.

Among other things, Wiz-War by Tom Jolly was one of two classic games that inspired Richard Garfield to design Magic The Gathering. (The other was Cosmic Encounter.)

I know I would never paint it or put it together ( my Warmaster is cleaned and primed with most of it assembled just needs the final assembly) so thats why i've never pulled the pin on the Warlord.

I'd love to get some of the RT era Space Marines but shipping from Canada to the rest of the world is stupid expensive now so I guess that will wait and again what would I really do with them? I have tons of 'display models' but less and less shelf space.

It is serendipity that I came back to Dakka to see this.

I have been a fan of Mamoru Nagano's Five Star Stories manga and models for 30+ years. Back then models were only are available from Japan, at atrocious ForEx rates and saddled with all international shipping issues. At the time, there there was an organic beauty and exceptional detail that didn't exist in any other series. The FSS mecha were the first to have the concept of a detailed inner frame supporting baroque armor, slim-waisted and (comparatively) organic proportions. In the decades since then, many of Nagano's design concepts have permeated mainstream mecha design, which is why Gundam now have inner frames, but I digress. One of the first models that really made an impression on me was the elegant and refined SSI Kulvulkan "Bang Doll". Last year, I found out that Volks had a USA branch, produced the Bang Doll in plastic, and was reprinting them for general sale. I preordered with Volks, and finally got it!

Right now, I'm building a related kit to get a feel for how Volks engineers their kits, and it's going pretty well. I'm enjoying building again.

The old skeleton set had Beastmen skulls to intermix with the human skulls. I'm also not sure where it was from, but there was also a plastic Orc skull that I used to make a Chaos Sorcerer staff years ago. Those would have easily made decent Orc skellies as well.

Been after this bugger for the better part of a decade. Just never wanted to pay the obscene $150+AUD prices they go for. Snagged one off face book for $30AUD including shipping that has all his bitz and is completely unmodified. Pretty bloody chuffed I have to say.

I think mine is that pewter Bret General that came in the tail end 5th Ed. boxed sets. I'm not even WANTING to know how stupid the prices are on ebay...

A mint(ish) copy of Titan Legions.

It’s the last major set of rules I need to complete my 2nd Ed Epic collection. But my word….that’s a job for a boot fair or, perhaps a dusty, forgotten FLGS caught in an time warp. Like one from Brigadoon.

One of the Skulz techpriests came on sale on Ebay and I managed to win the auction, at a closing bid still lower than the plastic equivalent Granted, the mini is painted and doesn't come with his backpack, but I can improvise. I'll never own the complete set, so this will be a fine compromise.

My white whale is the female commissar. I had it at one point but just can't find it after moving around multiple times in college, first couple of jobs, etc.

I collect the various Titan crew models released by GW. The ones I'm missing now are those from the Warbringer. I've only even seen them in person once, and that was thanks to the kind chap at Warhammer World that brought out the display model for me to have a peek:

...and the sitting Princeps from the head:

The latter seems a bit more likely to eventually find its way into my hands, but given that I'd need to buy a Warbringer to get the two deck-crew pictured, I suspect they'll always be my white whales.

I think that is the FW Warbringer Beta head princeps. Its might not be the same as the Alpha head for the warbringer as mine has a medal under his Adeptus Titanticus 'harness' while the pic below looks like it has some cabling or something. You might have some luck 'in other places' as its long out of production from FW. I believe it was a exclusive like the Warlord Beta head was (which I think looks way better then the alpha head).

For me it's mostly Eldar, and I've picked up most of them at some point when I got lucky on ebay - the full collection of metal farseers and warlocks that they ever released for example, the limited 2006 army box autarch, the direct only kneeling ranger. I managed to find all of them.

Now it's something somewhat bigger - I'd absolutely love to get my hands on a 40k scale Eldar Vampire (preferably the Hunter, but the Raider would be nice too - or both!), but they're pretty rare these days. I saw a thread a few years back where people mentioned that Forgeworld were reworking the kit, but that must have fallen by the wayside, probably when they moved the focus away from 40k towards Heresy and specialist games. Most frustratingly though, now that they've released them for Aeronautica it becomes harder to search for the 40k scale ones without the Aeronautica popping up instead. Even the stls that I've seen are designed for epic scale and wouldn't really scale up to full size, otherwise I'd happily print one.

Even some of the more recently discontinued stuff like the Phoenix Bomber - I was always quite fond of it, but never got around to buying one before it was culled from Forgeworld with very little warning. That and the fact that the FW Avatar with sword disappeared not long after I bought mine has left me with a little bit of an attitude that any FW kit can be culled at any time so if I want something I'd better make sure I buy it, that was one of the reasons I bought a couple of Eldar titans last year!

Not necessarily hard to get stuff, but:

- Dreamforge Games Isenkern stuff, I only ever got one of the cool sci-fi Hanomag half-tracks and I missed out on the cool accessory kits for it. The infantry was great too.

- Pretty much any FW Imperial fighter craft.

Great thread!

My white whale has to be a Tau Orca Dropship. I've got an eBay search saved for it but every time one pops up it has sold by the time I click on the link in my email! They go for lots of cash, but it's something that I've always wanted.

I really want a Manta, too, but I'm not ready to spend $1875 on a single model, but I'm closer to that than I've ever been I think...

One of the local guys bought a manta for christmas last year. He's scared to put it together it's that damn big.

The hardest part about the Manta kit is getting the straps right. They've got to be tight enough to hold steady when you use it as a hang glider.

At least the infantry are back in production, at a slightly different size.

I had NO idea where you were going with that.

I was so happy to see that! In bigger squad boxes too!

Interested to know what the size difference is on the new Eisenkern.

But to stay on topic, my White Whales are odd. They have nostalgia value for me, but I've pretty firmly moved from fantasy into Sci-Fi at this point, and one of the models isn't even a particularly great sculpt, in my opinion. So whatever they go for, I probably wouldn't bother to pursue them. I guess they're "unlikely bargain" White Whales?

One is the original snotling pump wagon, which I owned as a kid.

The other is the mounted and standing versions of Kaleb Daark, which I also owned as a kid. I wouldn't say these sculpts really did justice to the character, and they're not really standouts among Oldhammer sculpts in general. But I kind of miss mine and would enjoy painting it. Kaleb Daark also ties into the whole 'old guys pining for "Malal" who they'll never get again because rights issues' thing.

Still think having a Chaos God whose entire raison d'etre was to attack other Chaos Gods and their creations was a terrible concept to abandon (even with the Four remaining thwarting each other constantly, I liked having one who'd never join Chaos undivided. Shouldn't Chaos always be divided?) Somehow Kaleb himself was pure 90s cheese and excess even when he first debuted in 1985, but I enjoyed him nonetheless. He was another Elric inspired doomed sort with a punk attitude, armed with a biomorphic, fanged version of Stormbringer called Dreadaxe. "Come, Chaos! Dreadaxe thirsts for you!" Did Shakespeare himself ever craft finer lines?

Of the two Malal champions GW made miniatures for back in the day, Skrag the Slaughterer is the better model, but I never got a copy of the comic featuring Skrag and never formed an attachment to that character.

My white whale would be the Dropzone Commander game. I would need several items to warrant an online order but a lot of these items are never in stock. It is really annoying as those things are pretty basic such as starter boxes for the factions, rulebook, faction dice and the ruined city models.

But the good thing is that apparently GW wants to introduce Epic 30K next year. So my wallet is happy as it will only be bothered by HH 2.0 in 2022.

Have you tried one of the Dropzone commander groups on Facebook? I was able to get a couple starter sets that way, including the cardboard terrain (not the ruined city, though), for pretty good prices.

I friggin got it, and it's everything I hoped it would be and more! Some of the detail and undercutting on this model is insane. I'm sort of imagining that one of the reasons this model was a limited run is because the molding process was really tricky and maybe made for really fragile molds? I'd love to get the opinion of someone with more expertise. Anyways, Power Armor LE 10 is beautiful, and I'm super stoked to get it painted up.

I always really wanted to get into DUST but never did. That’s not so much white whale as lost cause at this point though

My white whale is probably either a Tau orca transporter or a am centaur artillery tractor

I never ended up getting that Techpriest. It disappeared in the post and the seller reimbursed me. I hope the package eventually found its way back to him.

I've changed my mind: my current white whale is the 6th Ed. WFB Dark Elves Cold One Chariot crewmember who is holding his spear above his head. I could get one with a BIN and shipping/export cost landing him near $40 US or more, so that model in a more reasonable price range.

I've paid a bit too much for them (but my Xmas bonus this year was good, and the quarterly bonus is on the way...) and I have WW reprints of Rogue Trader and both Chaos books locked in and on the way across the pond. I also snagged a great quality copy of the Battle Manual. So, given that I'm fine pulling from scanned PDFs for the Compilation and Compendium (and screw the Vehicle Manual), I think I'm good for 40K 1-2e rules. (The only 2e thing I'm missing is the SoB Codex and...meh.)

Meanwhile on the fantasy side, the last WHFB 4-5e army book I'm missing is Chaos Dwarfs. I find myself wishing I'd been less stubborn about buying one 10 years ago, when they were "only" $50 on eBay...

I'm missing the Rogue Trader Plague Marines, especially the funky guy with the skull head.

On the lotr side GW was kind enough to release every OOP model I had missed as MTO during the last couple of years.

That dude very clearly inspired the HH Mechanicum Thallax units!
