GW Battleforces announced on Thursday (18th November) @ 2021/11/14 18:12:31

Post by: beast_gts

From today's WarCom article:

However, one date that will pique the interest of many a hobbyist (or anyone looking to pick up a cracking present for a relative, friend, or significant other) is Battleforce Day.

Be sure to join us on Thursday the 18th of November, when we’ll be revealing all of this year’s Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Age of Sigmar Battleforces in preparation for the holiday season. Not only do they save you money compared to picking up the constituent units separately, but each Battleforce will provide the perfect start – or significant reinforcements – to any collection.

Well the reveal will be - but traditionally they've always been sold in shops and to 3rd parties. Now it might be that the world transport situation means that some territories might get them later than intended.

Might be a shame if there's no specialist game one; but then again the only real game that supports that is AT. Necromunda doesn't really have enough in any one side to warrant a box and even if they did it would only be one force and feel a bit odd. Most of the other specialist games are much smaller in model ranges per force so, again, just don't really fit for a battlebox.

Nonsense! We need a Necromunda box with 5 factions in it!

Necromunda could have a Zone Mortalis discount box, like the one that was basically the terrain part of Dark Uprising and sold out immediately

I might be persuaded to splash out on either a 40K Knight set or a Household bundle for Titanicus.

Tyranids would be rather fetching too, so long as it has a Carnifex in there...

For at least Titanicus they have done it in the past; the Titan battlegroup and the Knight battleforce, were Christmas releases.

You just predicted a Black Guardians of Ulthwe battleforce and what's worse is they would justify it with fluff, even though it's literally nothing but trash.

Would also love a Ynari starter with the Triumvirate and whatever, but who knows...

How about a chonky boi marine set? Hvy Intercessors, aggressors, eradicators, inceptors and a gravis captain (throw in the obligatory redemptor too).

We'll probably get a Drukhari flotilla, tsons or grey knights (no combat patrols for them yet).

Adeptus Astartes Heavy Interdiction Force:

1 Gravis Captain
10 Heavy Intercessors
3 Aggressors
3 Interceptors
1 Redemptor Dread
1 Partridge
1 Pear Tree

But it'll probably just be more Phobos gak...

In past years, I've noticed that the non 40k/AoS battleforces tend not to be announced at the same time. I.E. they usually show the 40k and AoS battleforces on the big preview day, and then 2 weeks later when they go up to preorder *surprise* heres an adeptus titanicus holiday bundle, 2 terrain bundles, and 4 paint and hobby supply bundles we didn't mention anywhere previously.

I’d be sorely tempted by AoS Slaanesh or Soulblight Gravelords.

I'd be shocked to still see 6 BF for 40K.

This year felt slow, and after we reached the second half EXTREMELY slow.

The other years we had Battleforces for the majority of the new edition new factions/first rule books, so for AoS I wait the mandatory SCE, I want to get surprised by Kruleboyz, and I really don't know, Nurgle has yet to be released. I don't know if they'd release SBGL because technically they weren't released for this edition but yet the BT was clearly designed for 3E.

40K is pretty much a loterry were half of the boxes are Astartes and 50% one of the boxes is Tau, so I bet Tau, at least two random chapters, I'd be nice to see Beast Snaggas but I don't count on them including a Hunt Rig, and one or two surpises if they go for 6 BF. Maybe one of them related to Charadon or Octarius for that case.

Agreed on at least one, maybe 2 astartes battleforces. Potentially grey knights.

I doubt Tau since their new book will be coming soon next year.

Beastsnaggas are still new kits, so I dont see a box for them either. I could see a speed freaks box with just the 6 buggies in it.

Sisters have a lot of options to make a battleforce from.

I'd guess at least 2 out of chaos marines, tyranids, or necrons as well.

Dark eldar and admech are strong enough armies that they dont really dont need to boost sales, so I think they will both see a miss this year.

I think in AoS it's 80% SCE, also Sylvaneth, Khorne had their battleforces a very long time ago, and Nurgle, Beasts of Chaos, Slaanesh didn't have them at all. Also, I'd consider Lumineth, Ossiarch, and Soulblight as newly introduced/or remade factions to have their battleforce.

For 40k I suppose it can be DA, SoB, Orks, Harlequins, TS or Grey Knights. I know some people wish for Knights, but it is hardly possible - we still didn't have battleforce with only huge models included. So I think for GW it is a priority to sell more models in Battleforce rather than 2 or 3.

GW Battleforces announced on Thursday (18th November) @ 2021/11/15 09:34:14

For AOS I would be in trouble if they release skullcrusher themed box for Khorne and something like mega gargant+2 small giant. The unit I have been eyeballing for khorne long time and now with kragnos nerf(lol wut. Worst unit for mega gargants and THAT got nerfed...) my 2k army dropped down to 150 pts gap so need 3rd mega gargant and box of small giants to get 2k list again anyway.

Though for reasons in above post I suspect I'm safe from SoB box

With both factions still awaiting codexes, I think it's more likely to see an updated version of Knight: Renegade released once they're done. That would scratch the Battleforce itch and make it easier to buy into either flavour of knights.

Knights are possible - I can't remember if it was a Christmas battleforce or an Apocalypse one, but they did one a couple of years back with a Castellan and some Armigers in it.

I think also Varghulf in a FEC box. Not sure of these were xmas battleforces in particular, but were definitely post-AoS, general availability boxes with bespoke covers, so not old army deals (that did include metals) nor webstore only bundles.

Kruleboyz and Stormcast seem guaranteed given that they were released in Dominion and last years 40k battleforces included Astartes and Necrons which were released in Indomitus. We are guaranteed to get one Astartes box, minimum. Two is not out of the question.

For AoS I think Lumineth and Hedonites are good contenders. Lumineth are new but they can stick a couple wave 2 items into a box with a bunch of wave 1 items. Hedonites are easy - take a few older slaanesh daemons kits and but them in a box with 1-2 of the new mortals units. Ossiarch are a good candidate for Death as they haven't had a Battleforce box but Nighthaunt/FEC have and Soulblight are a bit on the new side (though also not out of the question as they still have some older kits in the range that GW can use this type of box to push).

For 40k I'd like to see a Sisters box (preferably one that doesn't include the contents of their launch box/Combat Patrol). I'm guessing Orks rate a box this year (mostly older minis + maybe a new Beastsnagga kit), I would like to see a GSC box but I doubt it with the Custodes/GSC box coming out in the near future. Death Guard/Thousand Sons seem like the likely contenders as well. AdMech have a good range of older kits to draw from plus some more recent stuff to pair them with, so good contenders there too.

For Terrain - I want a wall of martyrs bundle, bring back the Firestorm Redoubt and Aquila Strongpoint!

OokamiEq wrote:

Ossiarch are about 3 years old now (I know this because I hoped each of the last two years that they would receive a box and was disappointed. This year would be year #3), more than old enough to get a box, especially considering Gloomspite got their first battleforce within a year of the faction being released. As for Lumineth, the fact that they got a recent second wave of minis is a good indicator that they are a contender, usually these battleforces contain a bunch of older stuff + a couple newer items - Necrons last year were all older kits + the new warriors that had only released a few months prior, for example.

Those both only had the one basic fodder unit repeated from Indomitus, the rest was all older models. There's no way the battleforces would be all this year's models, which disqualifies Krule Boys and whatever chamber the Primaris Stormcast are entirely. In addition, there's still piles of unsold Dominions practically lying around in the streets. More likely we see Ironjaws and a random older Chamber.

If anything Ossiarchs need some new models before they get a box - they've a great range but not a huge amount of model diversity. Which is strange because they are a great and new concept that I think are just begging for their second wave of models to land at some stage. Heck Underworlds already suggests that there will be archers

While the cynical part of me says that the AoS boxes will be SCE and Lumineth, I hope it ends up being Lumineth and Hedonites (with a few demons as possible).

While I do not collect the Lumineth, a couple of friends would buy one in a heartbeat, and pending the composition of a theoretical Hedonite box I could be in for 2. I just think that with Dominion still available in lots of places, that the SCE may be out of the running for this Battleforce.

Totally agree. As long as Ossiarch seem to be a remake of Tomb kings, archers would be highly welcomed. Not even mentioning that Death doesn’t have archers at all…

Ossiarch getting a box themed around the Kavalos is extremely likely.

They already had one as part of the Mortal Realms books - 2 units of Deathriders and a Kavalos kit which was basically free in the set. Always meant to pick one up and never got around to it. That could certainly form half of a battleforce for Ossiarchs.

It would also be a very sensible follow up to reissuing that theme in Kill Team Chalnath.

Which means they won't do it

It'd be great if the Sector Imperialis terrain would just return. Period. A single bit of SoB terrain and some frames in a limited edition Kill Team box isn't enough.

I somehow can see GW use the Battleforce as an excuse to bring back the many MANY recent "made for starter box" sprues they have made trough the years.

Death Guard from Dark Imperium in particular would be nice to finally be able to get our hands on the Lord of Contagion, and I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled an Indomitus half or two, and maybe even a Shadow spears.

It may also serve as a sort of step up from combat patrol for gift shopping purposes or something. Something to help people shop for loved ones that put warhammer on their Xmas list I would assume. Or birthday list. Whatever. I certainly agree that these are dumb.

Last nid box had neither gaunts or fexes. Which is a shame, as I wanted both. But since I’ve since bought them separate, there is a good chance for them this year.

Aeronatica Imperialis box with 20 new aircraft from Necrons and GSC.

AoS Jaws of Mork Box with 30 squigs, boss on cave squig, and a new squig catapult.

Hmm not sure, 6pm is a good time for big reveals that GW often uses, but its rarer for them to use that mid-week when its not a major event or such. Unless they are going to string out the reveal with video, I suspect it will drop sometime in the afternoon like a normal news post.

It's more curiousity at this point. Probably can't afford any of them, probably not going to be anything that catches me (unless they pull a Surprise Seraphon or a Deathrattle heavy SBG box).

So may sit on funds for Battletomes and maybe that Zoat Star Player for Blood Bowl...

You know, since they took all the Lizardmen star players away eradicating my desire to hunt down stuff to convert for them...

Was a little worried they would have a vampire one, but I’m safe to pass. I try to run rot-free, so don’t want the zombies, and not a fan of the centerpiece model.

Those are all personal preference things. Otherwise it looks like a fun box that would make a good army core.

Hmm they didn't mention LotR in the initial news, maybe this indicates that specialist games / paint are also a possibility.

Is that the first LoTR mini board game? I quite like it.

And I really like the scenery bundle, here's hoping for a Necromunda one....

What's the bet they do a Necromunda bundle that has 2 Gang Stronholds, a set of walls, a set of stairs platforms, and 4 tiles, just to spite us.

Hmmmm, I wonder if that Rohan terrain can be tweaked to fit a Kruleboy swamp theme. I was planning to get some STLs to 3D print, but plastics are almost always better.

The rohan box is nice. I got set last time and from 6 houses made 4 reqular and 1 big one and all looking different to each other.

If it was just houses(i have enough palisade) that would tempt me more than army deals.

Definitely needs a knife taken to them. There are times the LotR range spits out great models, but its so distinctly 'middle earth' that its a turn-off.

Rohan houses are very much LoTR scale and don’t mix well with AoS IMO unlike the Dol Guldur set which is a lot more scale neutral.

Is the scale difference that noticeable on the kits?

I suspect so, it was noticeable on models back in the middlehammer days. By now I suspect you'd even notice on terrain, accepting that model terrain is almost always over sized in some ways. (We expect doors to be one base width wide. My house doors certainly aren't 5-6' across.

Much like the Laketown houses, there's almost nothing that looks specifically Weta, other than someone's familiarity level with the designs, with the exception of the Rohan horse iconography on the roof crossbar which is an optional piece, or removable from the watchtower kit. Otherwise they are suitable for anything (and lots of Saga players use 'em for just dark ages houses)

AOS is Live

%"%£$! I honestly want all of them!

Lumineth would have tempted me more if they'd had the archer fox
Ossiarchs is a very solid set, but hten considering how small their range is you can't really make a bad box for them
Slaanesh really tempts me as that's a great core of mortals - no keeper so not as visually stunning as last years Tzeentch, but youv'e got the awesome new seeker riders in there!
Vampires looks like a very very solid start to vampire army!

£196.50 by my count in the Slaanesh box. That feels a bit too good to be £125, maybe these are £150?

(If they make enough to get via Element that still seems very good.)

Yeah, for those that don't play, LOTR models are so much smaller than 40k and AOS models. Even the smaller scale warhammer fantasy line was noticeably bigger, and that scale only increased with AOS.

I don't recommend getting those kits to use in AOS, since you will notice the size differences. Unless its like a halfling house...?

40%+ is in line with xmas boxes. SC etc give 30%+ and the xmas sets are better in terms of discount.

It's going to be a pain in the ass to get that box if it really is £125, probably down to £105 at third parties? That's a pretty new model range.

GW Battleforces announced on Thursday (18th November) @ 2021/11/18 15:57:57

Post by: Inquisitor Gideon

Well if these are £125 and third parties do get them and knock off around an extra 20% that's a straight £100. These will fly.

GW Battleforces announced on Thursday (18th November) @ 2021/11/18 16:01:25

Post by: Overread

Honestly I don't see a dud in them - Ossiarchs perhaps as they aren't the most popular new army, in part I think because they need a second wave of models much like Lumineth got. That said its a fantastic deal for getting started with them or expanding.

I do not foresee any of these lasting a long time in the market.

And yes the Vampire box is a surprise considering its all new models - Slaanesh too and a good chunk of Lumineth - heh the Ossiarchs - the newest concept army of the lot - are the oldest models

Why would it need to be a halfling house? In middle ages, people didn't live in villas, houses were small because wood, especially worked one, was expensive. Doors weren't big either, because you don't want heat to easily escape, nor the nasties to easily get in. Doors need to be one base wide? What? Even in modern buildings you don't see two meter wide doors, half base door would be more realistic.

Many aos modeis are supposead to be bigger than reqular humans though. Stormcast? Over head taller. If doors look they are comfortable for sce/elves they are too small as reqular human house and indeed smaller doors sell size of stormcast(which is why mixing sce&cos is fun. It reinforces just how big sce are).

Gaming wise they are good sized. Not too small to have too little impact, not big enough manouvering too impacted, tall enough it blocks los to most but not monsters. 6 of them fits nicely to board

Hmmm the 40k ones look a lot less impressive, probably mostly down to including a lot of older models or overlapping with recent starters. AdMech could really use a vehicle in there instead of the Rangers that already came in literally every AdMech bundle ever.

Necron surprises me as they've had Indomitus last year and this year are in the Imperium Magazine - so whilst it is a very good set, it doesn't actually interest me. The bits I do want I can get in the magazine for cheaper and the rest I kind of have enough of already. However for anyone who missed out on those its a great set.

I think so far the 40K look like very nice, not perhaps as exciting to me, but very nice sets. The AoS are more "exciting/interesting"

As someone with both Ad Mech start collecting boxes I'm quite happy for it to have the more recent models in, and it goes well with the Combat Patrol box for anyone starting out. Can't really do one without the rangers/vanguard as there just isn't the troop choices.

The Ork one is pretty useless, Grots and Nobz? Two of the worst units in the codex. You only ever need max 1 killtrike and it's tricky to convert to another buggy, so this is definitely mostly for new players. It would have been better to skip the Grots and Nobz and added some Warbikes instead though, as currently it's a rather weird mix of units that doesn't synergize at all.

There's two options for Troops with AdMech.

It's either the Skitarii Ranger/Vanguard set or the Kataphron. Both have shown up in quite a few sets.

Personally, I'm a fan of Skitarii showing up. Means that I can fix my squads a bit easier while also getting some stuff I didn't already have(Pteraxii).

I like how Space Marines are most numerous after orks, despite having a vehicle in the bundle. We horde army now, eh?

I don't get why GW put old captain in there, though. Why not Gravis to go with HI? Or one of new ones? I'd also prefer Infiltrators instead of AI to match the theme of the army. Or hell, even Reivers. AI add very little, don't synergize with anything, and are very cheap from other bundles...

Well, yes, a vehicle would have been nice, but the box is actually quite interesting for me. I don't have the riders, flyers and the fat dude and only one walker and one squad of Sicarians. And I wanted to buy a hoplite upgrade kit from FW, so I need a new Skitarii box anyway... Dammit! Usually I never care for those boxes.

I think that they will never have "proper focus" because for most armies there are enough options that people will always have a problem with a kit in some form. More so for armies with more models where there's more diversity or odler armies where many established people already have most of the models and want specifics - often non-core things that they have loads of already.

Sure but it hardly does the newbies any list building favours, neither gameplay wise nor thematically.

The models are great (I love Grots and Nobs), and should be fun for a beginner to paint and I guess that is what they focus on.

Also, now that I look at these, they really should have added 1 more cheap, filler character to Sisters and AM. Would pad value a bit and make both look less puny on the table. It's just sad how little models they have compared to SM and orks, neither is supposed to be an low numbers elite army

Yeah you aren't on the list of usual whingers but anyway as I said it goes great with the existing offerings. ff the top of my head I can remember that the Ork CP has deffkoptas and a megaboss, anyone that has bought one or more of those is probably quite happy to see a plane and a different commander in here. This goes for all of the boxes from what I can see - the AM one, add that to the tank and the Enginseer and the Kataphron from the CP box, there's no duplicates aside from core troops. I reiterate, these boxes are great for beginners and experienced collectors alike.

If they can just fit in an AT Knight battleforce by 6'o'clock I think I just about muster the will to live...

The necron one is exactly the list of models i wanted to get lol (well... except the psychomancer. I already play night lords for useless morale effects).

Only bad thing about the Necron one (and it's a small letdown at worst imo) is the flayed ones taking up a good chunk of the value with the discount Imperium flayed ones just around the corner. The Sisters look kind of light on models I'm less excited about that now it has sunk in, might still buy it and try to flog off the vehicles and commander though six months from now, see if I can come away with a very hefty discount on the troops (which is all I want from this box) once the dust settles.

Actually I'd say the downside with the Necron one is the two big walkers and the Rule of 3 since they come in single unit blocks; if you get 2 sets you end up with 1 that is technically "spare"

Sent my preorder in to my local store:
2 Soulblight
2 Hedonite
2 Ossiarch
2 Necron
2 Ad Mech
4 Sisters (2 are for my girlfriend)

This years gonna be expensive, good thing I'm working a bit of overtime the next couple weeks XD. Was tempted by the Vanari but I gotta draw the line *somewhere*. Orks are a pass, the only thing in there I really want is the flyer. Marines are tempting but I don't need more regular and assault intercessors.

Got that multiple of three though if you bought Indomitus and one of these, I imagine that will be quite common amongst Necron people.

SM one is solid, just by sheer quantity (though at first I thought it had 3 lieutenants, not bladeguard, which says... something)

Sisters feels thin, probably because of the price tag on the tanks.

Ad Mech one also feels very thin, again probably because of the retail cost on some of those kits.

DG set is actually pretty nice, but I suspect that's mostly for the three blighthaulers together rather than scrounging for them. Too bad that is still an E2B kit rather than something with options.

Necron box I like in theory, though its got too many models I don't want

Ork box is just... weird. Grots are cheap as chips, no reason for one of the few reasonably priced ($18 for 11 models) kits to be taking up space in a bargain box. Nobs have been oversold in boxed sets and battleforces for years. The new monopose-orks are fine, I guess. Not sure what the trike and flyer are doing in there.

Its fine, overall. None of the 40k or AoS boxes are really appealing to me, but most aren't awful. Not going to bother on waiting three weeks for an order to show up for these, though.

Yeah I think the AM is the pick of the bunch here imo. The flying guys, the cavalry, both of these are new and also fairly pricey. Then the walker, the semi-exclusive commander, minimal overlap of the troops between this and SC/CP. Even the Ruststalkers are great for a lot of people, I imagine many are put off paying £30+ for a unit of 5 mansize miniatures, getting them at 40% discount can never be bad. I think I'll try and get two of these.

That battle sister box is straight garbage tbh. Battle sisters are the kit everyone has, the exorcist and immolator are both trash. You're basically just buying the box for the dogmata and the sacrosancts.

It's still a discount and that's always nice, but man...the only way it would have been worse is if they had put in a castigator instead.

I think that GW has been pretty intentionally designing bundles (starter boxes, combat patrols, and battleforces) to be really good deals that don't really reward buying multiples.

At least they're doing a better job of keeping in mind what's in Combat Patrols when they release these.

You still can't get penitent engines, repentia, seraphim or arcoflags at a discount. The CP kits are mono-pose with no options and also all minimum unit sizes, which basically means you have to buy 2 to get 1 one squad of arcos or repentia (that you'd actually field).

The Orks one is very disjointed and very iffy for both newcomers and veteran Ork players. No buggies, no warbikerz, kommandos or even a Trukk. I feel like they spun a wheel and just used that to figure out what to put in there.

I think, as has been said above, they looked at the existing discount boxes and tried not to duplicate them (either that or they've managed to randomly achieve this which I find unlikely). It's pretty fair that they didn't put Kommandos in. I guess many people would have preferred bikes or whatnot but the only mildly offensive thing in there is the 15yo Nob kit imo. Perhaps fewer core troops also would have been ideal.

From a new sister player perspective, this box is outstanding.

Let's say you started with the Combat Patrol (expected) you would now have...

Canonness
2x10 sisters
5 seraphim
dogmata
repentia superior
some repentia and arco flags
sacrosants
rhino
immolator
exorcist
pen engine

it's a good starting sisters force for discount.
I fully expect that immolators and exorcists will take a pretty good price drop on next update, so tanks won't be complete trash by that point. Just because you and other "must only play best" players don't like the rules, the models themselves are some of the best armoured vehicles in the game.

Yeah, I stopped buying Orks at <1500pts in case an xmas battleforce came up with stuff I wanted. It didn't even need to be particularly competitive units (the meta always swings around eventually), just models I'm interested in like walkers or vehicles. However after just finishing 40 Boyz plus my longstanding rule about not buying any planes for 40k, I don't have much of an urge to buy this box. Shame.

The AdMech box on the other had has several kits I'd previously put off buying due to cost, and may end up happening instead.

It does, but for a long time they were hard to get. So the blighthaulers are something that actually appeals to people.

The Deathshroud also fall into the 'too expensive for a box of 3 models, but in a discount box they're fine' logic trap. Same for the icon bearer, really.

I've been playing the game for 20 years, and I've watched nearly every unit I own swing between excellent and trash. Even some units that were repeatedly mediocre (Stormtroopers!) eventually became really good, albeit after 20 years. Still waiting for my Ogryn to have their moment.

As the codex cycle has shortened, and GW is now balancing points and even datasheets on the regular, or sprinkling in hot patch stratagems, buying only based on what's really good right now only makes sense if you're painting everything you buy more or less immediatly. If you buy things and they sit on a shelf for six months or more, things could change.

This is all a way of saying, Immolaters have exactly the sort of datasheet that can be good, coupling twin MMs with some cargo capacity in an army with access to pre game moves, advancing and shooting, and ways to manipulate damage dice. They could drop 10pts and be real good (and in Argent Shroud with dominions, they're perfectly fine now).

I don't understand this advice. Why aren't you guys preordering through your local indy stores? You don't pay shipping, you'll probably get a discount, and (assuming you have a good relationship with the staff) you can put your orders in up front (like now) before its even able to be ordered through the webshop. You'll be ahead of the game, unlike the shmucks who buy everything direct.

And we probably won't get a preorder promise, to date the only preorder promises that have been done have been for sets that contain unique sculpts in them. Everything in these boxes is just bundled content that you can buy off the shelf today at a slightly better price. Theres no reason or obligation for GW to make a preorder promise to you - you may want it, but GW is incentived not to make too many available, as that would be a loss vs what they could get if you bought the kits at the regular price.

I'm gonna ruin the joke and say tiles will never ever be in a bundle box because they have a different physical footprint than sprues.

Could be in an online only 1 click bundle without bespoke packaging tho I guess.

Because around these parts GW has screwed over the local stores to the point that they can't guarantee they'll get boxed sets in at all, let alone multiple ones for customers who want one. For me, the closest one generally won't even do it. It took 3 in person trips to the store to get Dominion ordered, and it was only 'probably' over the course of the week and a half until the day before release (because it literally came in Friday's shipment). Of the four stores I can get to in an hour or so, only one does a discount at all, and its barely worth the drive. The last two times I tried to preorder stuff, they couldn't get it. They still have (as far as I know) Indomitus boxed sets, but everything after that has been a nightmare, and the owner complains about the GW rep ghosting him on new products.

Pre-ordering direct from Indy stores just isn't a reliable option.
Granted, getting things direct from GW is slow and laborious these days too, but its often the workable option if its really on the wish list.

The ork one is just… gak

Grots are sort of just a non-unit, don’t deal damage, can’t soak damage, can’t go onto points.

Boyz aren’t all too much better, maybe if they had gotten a trukk?

The flyer is probably the best thing in there, it’s going to carry anyone who uses that list as is.

Nobz are just way too squishy for the points to footslog with the rest of the infantry

Big mek with SAG is just over costed for what it can expect to do, and there’s nothing to help bodyguard it where it wants to stay at

Deffkilla is gimped because you have nothing to zoom up with it, and there’s not enough things capitalizing on speedwaaagh to just keep it in the back.

Just give me my seperate kommandos already morkdamnit.

Just keep an eye on the Sunday posts - depending on how GW are approaching their terminology, going on pre-order on the 27th to release on the 4th would be possible, but so would going on pre-order on the 4th to release on the 11th.

I'm tempted by the Necron one for now, to add some more variety to what I've got ahead of working on them next year.

Actually I'd say the downside with the Necron one is the two big walkers and the Rule of 3 since they come in single unit blocks; if you get 2 sets you end up with 1 that is technically "spare"

Got that multiple of three though if you bought Indomitus and one of these, I imagine that will be quite common amongst Necron people.

Indomitus isnt the same walker.

yeah, i hate spamming units so 2 of them will be perfect for me (its gonna fill the war of the world aesthetic i want for my army)

Also, for everyone saying the contents suck, don't forget that the majority of players are giga casuals that don't aim for tournament winning lists.

GW is really putting the pinch of scalpers. Stuff like Dominion, or even Octarius, are simply not selling out that fast, if at all. I saw a large FLGS blow out Indomitus last black friday for barely above cost.

It's getting harder to make a buck that way.

It really depends how much GW makes and also how much demand there is. IF GW's makes "too much" and demand is too low to take it all off the market fast, then scalpers suffer; if GW makes too little then scalpers pick up profits.

IT's a very hard line to walk for GW because different armies can sell at different rates, sometimes almost randomly. Plus over the last 2 years all of GW's numbers got inflated and changed and mess around. Right now sales for their stuff is not just based on internal aspects (power, balance, model quality, army popularity) but also a lot of external factors which can have strange impacts. Eg lockdowns which spike sales; etc

Wrong. SM one is gak from multiple standpoints. If you're new player who wants to play new hotness, Black Templars, 90% of the box is useless to you. You only will really use AI and BG. Maybe a vehicle, but it doesn't really gel with chapter tactic so it's meh filler. If you want to play anything else, AI will be completely useless, eating most of discount, because they have no transport, no delivery mode, no buffing characters, want completely different game plan and chapter rules than the whole rest of the army, and are one mediocre melee unit that will accomplish absolutely nothing on the battlefield before opponent laughs and blasts it to bits as it crawls towards them.

Not to mention both new and old players already have lots of them from starters and more AI is about last thing they need. That's why I said Infiltrators or Reivers would be better, they look cooler, want the same traits as the rest of the Battleforce, have delivery mode, and do something. Literally the only use for AI is to convert a few into Intercessors and Bladeguard using spare bits from both kits, but you don't get many of these so even that is of little value. Hell, I suspect they were put here solely to get rid of them because few sane people would buy AI box when starter ones are vastly cheaper and have the exact same options (and the chapters who like choppy units have better options and even BT, last chapter that could really use them, has better boxes now, sooo...)

GW reselling is a time honoured tradition at this point. The scarcity angle is pretty new, I don't remember so much FOMO / hard to get / limited stuff back in the day, but people have been making a living or at least supplementing their incomes by reselling GW product for literal decades now. Personally I can't really blame them, if it's their best time spent to money earned option, but then again I've also never felt liked I've missed out on anything I wanted due to this practice (Indomitus was a close call I missed the first wave but ofc GW remedied that situation).

Dude shut up that first bit about BT is completely irrelevant, even the most deranged GW hater isn't expecting this to be a BT box, and the second bit about not having characters or transports is remedied by buying...you guessed it, a couple of characters or transports. I never said this is some sort of magic bullet that will take on all-comers, I said it is a good box for new and existing players. The second bit about making this phobos stuff is just flat out bizarre, that was what they gave us last year and it was almost universally panned. Are Reivers even good units that people take? (I'll answer this rhetorical question for you, no they aren't, and I know that despite not even playing the game). wtf man.

There's a big difference between 'new player' and 'new army'. Quite often boxes like this is what tips people from "I like that faction but don't want to pay full price for another army" to "oh cool ~£100 buys me nearly 1000pts, sold!".

If I were starting Orks I'd consider getting it for fun games and for the models. Model "power" goes up and down all the time through editions and such. What's trash this week is superpowered next month kind of things.
Internet chatter does tend to steer toward the most tactically sound choices.

Also don't forget before those models even hit the battlefield you'll have hours of fun building and painting them up.

It really isn't targeted. GW happily puts things up to sale. The gatekeeping on 'who they're for' is just a weird construct by some posters.
I don't know if they think it will make people not buy them so they can get theirs, or what. But it comes up every year without fail.

Depends if you like the look of everything in it. It's ~£193.00 worth of models but there's no real focus - the trike is the only vehicle, grots don't really do anything, the SAG isn't amazing... (and you probably want another box or two of Boys to bulk them out / sort out the weapon options)

Because around these parts GW has screwed over the local stores to the point that they can't guarantee they'll get boxed sets in at all, let alone multiple ones for customers who want one. Its just odd to hear that. Also in the US, never have an issue, 100 reliability for me. I preorder (i.e. text the shop owner and tell him what I want) the moment a sunday preview is released and am usually the first in line for whatever is coming out as a result. He is johnny on the spot in putting his orders in on time instead of waiting until the deadline to put his orders in, and even if GW allocates his order down (which they usually do) I still can usually get everything I want because, again, first in line. Sometimes they allocate down to 1 box, but oh well, I either find another retailer that has them or if its not limited I wait until they come back around for sale again and get them then.

Depending on GW online sales to get you what you want is perhaps the *least* reliable way of engaging with this hobby, given all the issues people have had over the years with stuff selling out, etc. If your solution is to get up early and wait for the preorders to go live and hope you can complete checkout faster than everyone else, you don't have a reliable source, you have a lottery.

The vast majority out there do, those who don't... eh, its a personal problem. Even then, plenty of discount e-retailers out there for you to keep an eye on and purchase from when preorder windows open. Last year I was still able to order the supposedly super rare, sold-out-in-5-seconds holiday battleforces 2 weeks after the release date without issue from the comfort of my living room for 20% off or better (especially those items that I was able to order from the UK to leverage exchange rates, there are ways around GWs region blocks if you get creative enough.. If your first thought is to go to GWs website to try to get something than you either lack imagination, experience/knowledge, or googling skills (or some combination thereof).

This is going to backfire spectacularly for GW in the near future. Just you wait. A lot of stores took a bath on Dominion as well as a number of other products released under the made to order/preorder promise policy that they started earlier this year. In one case a local store (also a major online shop) ordered however many copies of Dominion, received their initial shipment of 50 or so copies, sold some amount of them, and then a month later received a shipping notice for the remaining 130+ copies of the box set while they still had at least a dozen still on the shelf. They're practically giving Dominion away as door prizes at events to try to get rid of them. Similar happened with Octarius, etc (not to the same severity because they scaled back their orders since then), but it used to be that they would order up to their allocation because they knew that the supply squeeze meant that they would sell out immediately whether it be in store or online, either as a result of FOMO or just natural demand, now they are more and more only ordering what they think they can sell. Other retailers in the area have taken similar approaches as of late as well. The end result for GW is that theres going to be a decline in sales as their artificially inflated sales bubble begins to deflate.

We all know they'll be bought out by the whales in a few minutes (maybe hours) of release.
I mean chaosomega already listed about £2000 he was going to drop on them.

Absolutely. Been doing this for a long time, I basically collect every faction in the game at this point (40k, not so much for AoS though I collect all of Death, most of Chaos, and about half of destruction - only thing I don't really care for is Order though I do have stormcast), 98% of my purchases are start collectings/combat patrols/battleforces/battleboxes. Very rarely do I go out and buy an individual kit, I'm all about maximizing the number of minis I can get for a dollar. The holiday battleforces are my superbowl.

Most around here simply won't take risks like that. One still tries, but the GW rep (the one who ghosts the store owner) has been a problem for the last year and a half or so and they don't get what they ask for, or even what they were promised.

The rests are primarily Comic and Magic shops, and GW is a sideline. They won't order specialty product just to have it around, it ties up too much money in stock that doesn't reliably move.
And for preorders, there has been a growing problem getting them, and they don't want to take money and then give it back if it falls through. So they just... don't. The few older stores I know have gotten more and more disgruntled with GW any and they way they handle 'direct only' items and minimum stock levels. Investing in GW product lines is often a bad deal for the smaller stores.

I don't disagree, but its the situation at hand. (though getting up early isn't a factor- preorders come in the afternoon). Its less of a lottery and more just something I let pass me by. I made the effort for Dominion, but most of the boxed sets aren't enough. So...I buy less. /shrug

I actually really like the look of the sisters box (slaanesh mortals ain't bad either), but GW has a tradition of charging about 2-4 times what I'd ever be willing to pay for sisters in Japan, and I feel like this won't be an exception.
With a bit of luck it might mean that the bits market will have lots of spares from the slaanesh stuff, which would be fun for my 30k Emperor's Children (if I ever actually get around to making more than 1 of them lol)

Well... duh?

I mean, given you don't actually play the games that most of these units are played in, of course they're not going to be worth it to you.

The Sisters box has everything playable in 3rd. Everything. That's the only one that's plausible. The Ork one comes close, and the Marines one would also fit the pistol if I didn't have a rather massive Firstborn army already. I guess I was hoping for more Troops units and a smattering of the other three categories along with some transports. Any deal I look for is through the lens of being able to be used through any edition, and that narrows my purchases.

There's an equivalent of Sacresants in 3rd?

I saw Celestians and figured at worst they were convertible. Apparently NONE of the kits are 100% useable in older editions...

that is an incredibly specific niche.

My thoughts on the 40k battleforces:

-Marines: This is the only one that I might actually buy. My Ravenwing wouldn't mind a second Storm Speeder, and my Deathwing or even my Space Wolves wouldn't mind some Bladeguard. And I definitely want some Heavy Intercessors for my DA; I don't actually own any currently. The Intercessors and Assault Intercessors are kinda meh for me, but I can make use of them. Ditto for the Captain. It's definitely a solid start to a Marine army for someone starting out with the game, even though little of it is cutting edge competitive.

-Sisters: I play Sisters, but this box is probably a hard pass for me. I simply don't need any of it except for maybe the Sacresants. If Immolators and/or Exorcists were to get a significant points cut, maybe I'd be more inclined. I don't really need more basic Battle Sisters either, or a second Dogmata. I feel like this force would be massively more appealing if, as others have said, one of the vehicles was replaced with another squad or two. I would also have put in a Canoness instead of a Dogmata. As is, there is no HQ in the box, which seems like a no-no as a starter force.

-AdMech: If I was going to start AdMech, I would jump all over this. This set plus a Combat Patrol would likely be a great jumping-off point for the army, especially if you could also track down one or both of the old Start Collecting boxes. Not going to get this myself as I have no plans to start AdMech, but the box definitely gets a thumbs-up from me.

-Death Guard: This box is perhaps the worst of the lot, but that isn't to say it's bad (it's just 6th out of 6 to me). The lack of an HQ makes it a poor jumping-off point for an army (why not just put a Daemon Prince in instead of the two single Plague Marine hero guys?), but if you were to combine this with the Combat Patrol you've probably got a decent core army. I guess there aren't any Death Guard HQ's available in plastic besides Typhus, so they were in a weird spot with this one.

-Necrons: If I played Necrons, I would probably grab this one. It's got a lot of cool stuff in it, even if it's not all top-tier competitive stuff. Again, this plus the Combat Patrol would be a great start to the army, especially if you also had the Necrons halves of the Recruit and Elite edition starters.

-Orks: I actually really like this box, especially for anyone starting the army. 20 of the new Boyz makes a great core, plus some Gretchin and Nobz for variety so the painting doesn't get too stale (so long as you don't mind green, that is! ). The leader choices are decent, too, as the Deffkilla is a fun little unit and the Mek with Shokk Attack Gun is a perennial favorite even if it's not that good. And the Ork flyer kit is one of the coolest in their whole range. Just a great little box, this one. Like basically all the others, it combos well with the Patrol box and those two boxes would be how I would choose to start Orks (if I were going to start my own WAAAGH!, that is).

I'm patiently awaiting the new Maggotkin battletome, and their one special box just revealed makes me happy. Based on the contents, it seems mixing demons and mortals will definitely be welcomed in the new book. It will also round out my collection perfectly.

Once GW makes a new ruleset I like I'll change it up. For now I refuse to play any game I don't enjoy, and I CERTAINLY don't enjoy AOS or modern 40K...

Death is one of my favorite factions in AoS, and a friend recently got me Nagash for my Birthday...so what a nice time for that Bonereaper box to come along. Don't mind if I do!

I want the sister’s and AdMech one.
Haven’t played 40k in many years, but these army boxes consist 100% of the models I want to own anyway.
Does Sister’s army box + Combat patrol make a decent core?

Somewhat. The combat patrol is mono build (apart from the Rhino) so it kind of makes for a bit wonky squad loadouts. The arco's and Repentia in the patrol are not that useful, but you'll have no problem filling a patrol detachment with these combined, although you'll have too many Elite units. You miss a single HQ for it to be a Battalion detachment. It wouldn't be tournament competitive, but fine for regular matched play games.

Nothing wrong with that, it's just weird to claim that boxes have no value when they're for games you admittedly do not play.
