Welcome all to the 82nd round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds, ending in February next year.
This month is our open round. Paint whatever hobby related thing you want. It’s a busy month, so take what time you can to fit in what you are able. Or use the open nature to help make your year-end goals. Just have fun, get something out of the Pile of Shame, practice you skills, and have a great month.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of December and will end at midnight Eastern time on 1st January. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days. I’m just going to add that extra day on now, instead of waiting for someone to request extra time. Celebrate the new year by relaxing, and not trying to get the last detail painted before the ball drops.

Ah, always looking for this round! So many interesting entries every time.
I'll most likely take part with this.
It's yet another buggy, but this challenge keeps me motivated on finishing it.
Scratchbuilt Kustom Boosta Blasta, using a 1934 Chevrolet 5 Window coupe body as inspiration.
Proof:
Might change my entry later, not sure. I'll at least try to get it finished.

I will enter some more metal Necromunda, or old metal Sisters, or some old metal Eldar. Just need to decide which of the three I am most interested in finishing next.
Cheers,
CB
PS: So based on the fact I have only been painting a few figures this month, my entry is going to be old metal Confrontation Ash Wastes gangers and Necromunda Scavvies.
PPS: I seem to have not taken a photo right after priming, but you can see they are just started and have tons of work left on them.

Open? I might throw in on this round
I'm doing a Traitor Marine Kill Team with 3 Marines and 8 Cultists. Given model limit here I will restrict my entry to the three Marines.
Here's the Group Shot: (ignore the mass of craptachan-future-cultists)
(@wildbilbo is my tag on the discord channel and twitter)
The models will be:
Icon Bearer (my Master of Possession will be slumming it to fit this role)
Aspiring Champion (I somehow have 2/3rds of a StormCast model that I might as well use for something!)
And Heavy Bolter Gunner:
Cheers

Maybe, just maybe, I'll have the gumption to actually finish something for one of these this time around. Having to paint a bunch of Sisters for a tournament army, and do it under massive time pressure, really took the wind out of my sails for a long while as far as painting. Worst burnout I've ever really felt.
Anyways, here's my planned entry and proof pic for this month:
These are 3D printed models from a patreon I'm subscribed to; his last three months of models in his Sci-fi category have had the theme of "Dark Space Elf Nippon", which is basically Japanese-themed Drukhari. These are the Archon, Succubus (which was the "pinup" model for the month of October) and Haemonculus from the range. This will be the first time I've actually painted something that I 3D printed.
For those who are curious, the artist is Ghamak. Here's a link to his MyMiniFactory page if you're curious about his work: https://www.myminifactory.com/users/Ghamak

I am familiar with this actually. Both the burn out and the miniature line. My two cents, you don't have to finish every month at the top. Just do as much as you feel you can or want to. Even if it's just battle ready. We all have our weeks/months where we just can't. Except dv8 cuz he's a God. But us mortals just gotta give ourselves some slack. You're awesome!

It has been surprisingly difficult trying to decide on my entry for this month, but I'm pretty sure it'll be these fellows:
From left to right: Alpha Simian, Synechdote, and Skaratron. All three are Giants for Dreadball Ultimate and/or Xtreme, but also appear in Deadzone, which has been getting a lot of play in chez JiJ recently.

I'm in. I only remembered to take a fresh proof pic after having painted the ork's skin green, I hope that's okay.
Real life continues to get realer, and it's starting to cramp the style of this fantasy life I've been cultivating for as long as I've been alive. I'm going to try to batch paint all six minis, with the goal of having them all affixed to last month's Squighogs, but depending on how hectic December gets, I may whittle down the scope of what I attempt to get across the finish line. One ork rider at the very least.

It's just as well this is the open round, since this entry requires a little explanation: 2020 was the 40th and 45th anniversaries, respectively, of the Gundam and Hello Kitty franchises. As part of the commemoration, Bandai released a couple of kits which let you build a chibi gundam mecha and a little model Hello Kitty. They also contained parts to headswap the two models, resulting in a mecha-kitty as seen on the instruction manual below. I'm going to be kitbashing this anniversary kit slightly so that it's less 'gundam cosplay Kitty' and more 'retro sci-fi Kitty'.

These are the kits you're looking for: https://www.hlj.com/search/?q=hello+kitty+gundam. Note that the red and green Zaku II kits are mostly recolours of each other, but the gundam version uses a different frame as the base, so might not be kit-bashable as easily with the zakus.
JoshInJapan wrote:After seeing this, I did a quick Google search, and boy oh boy are there a lot of Gundam/Kitty crossover models/figures.
These gunpla kits are actually the cheapest models to come out of that crossover. Some of the diecast figures were pretty pricey by comparison.

I finished the Alpha Simian:
His paintjob was inspired by the Ultra Humanite, a Golden Age DC villain. The gold disk on his chest doesn't look exactly gold, but I'm not entirely sure how to do NMM on a flat surface like that. He's based for Dreadball, but as he'll likely be spending more time in Deadzone, I have to figure out a basing option for that, as well

Has anyone experienced gloss varnish lifting paint, even when the paint was try to the touch? I was using The Army Painter gloss varnish diluted 1:3 with water, and while it wasn't stripping the paint, it was lifting enough for there to be colour bleeding into adjacent white areas. I doused the last gunpla I did in a thick coat of neat matt varnish and didn't have this problem.

I forgot to take a proof pic, but I have this one I took of the whole horde when I bought it off ebay. The big guy went through very little in the way of changes prior to this month. One base layer of a skin tone while I had some paint mixed up from my clan rat marathon.
Anyway, some progress pics. He's in the hole stage of painting and it pretty much looks garbage. But, a little faith goes a long way. He'll get there.

For once I finished my submission well before the deadline! This was due to it being intended as a gift, so I had an IRL deadline to work to. A bit stressful but I'm reasonably happy with how it came out. So many coats of paint though, I was envying airbrush users while painting this. I'm actually still in this one, here's a WIP:
Most of the base colors are down at this point, plus I've already shaded and highlighted the Succubus's hair (plus I basecoated all the little metal hooks in it). I've also shaded the Haemonculus's armor and tunic. Still plenty to do on these three. Even at the end the models will only look so good mainly due to the fact that I didn't clean them up as well as I could have (one of the little quirks of 3d printed models is support residue and stuff which is not always easy to see before painting), but also because my printer isn't the greatest so some finer details were lost. Still, these have been fun to work on so far.

OK, calling these guys done.
When the weather is cold out, the best way to heat things up is a little melta. Or a lot of melta! For being starter box monopose, these guys were pretty good on the detail. Fun to paint, and not a bad unit to toss into a list. More importantly, these guys are the final unit for the primaris demi-company that was my goal for the year. Much of which has been part of this contest for the last few years. Nice to get them done and on the Year-To-Date shelf, which needs to be integrated into the general collection some day soon.
Lots of great looking stuff out there, keep up the good work!

Yep! Yerl and Korm are from ancient catalogues, Fennix is from a very early 40K novel ( Chaos Child), Zarneck I got off the Lexicanum wiki but I'm sure it must be accurate, and Alen the Seer is from an old Citadel Combat Card.

Thanks Freya, thanks Pariah Press, the larger gold and red icons on the banner are all putty but the patterning in the white section and the around the blue edge is freehand. I was hoping for a lighter grey for the white patterning to let it be a bit more subtle like in the blue border but I think maybe the darker grey shows up better in the photos anyway.
Abbess Hild the Huskey baring the standard for the witch hunter cause. Then the witches are Mildred the Mole (she might be the worst witch) and a rabbit they call Wild Rose. (Who came out much cuter than my sculpting tools intended!) She’s a pretty happy bunny.

Mildred can't be the worst witch... Maybe a little short sighted perhaps, but surely not actually bad! (its ok, my coat is on the way out anyway... )
The banner is awesome and the bunny sculpting is great as well. Love the twining flowers.

Phew, managed to get this done despite it being pretty much half built two weeks ago.
Finished pics: Scratchbuilt Kustom Boosta Blasta
Even though this is not the biggest kitbashed / converted model I've done, it was definitely the most challenging one!
Building the body out of plasticard was a pain, especially as I tried to follow the blueprints of a 1934 Chevrolet 5 Window Coupe.
After it was done the real fun started.
It is a bit crooked, but hopefully in an Orky way. All in all, I'm quite happy how it turned out.

You should be well happy with that. The close up shot really shows off your excellent distressing/rust/chipping all that good stuff. It’s a real rat-rod. Love it!

Finished!
After totally screwing up the hairy brush highlighting, I went back with a dark blue airbrush blend, and I'm much happier. Is it realistic? probably not, but I think each of the different light sources are picked up fairly well.
Least happy with the red, but that's just because I did that over the top of the rubbish hairy highlights, couldn't tidy the edging up, and didn't want to go back to the start on that face...
Man (well paint) of the match goes to the Space Marine Paint Set Ultramarine Blue from about 1988, that remixed perfectly and ran through my airbrush super smoothly for the re-working of the back highlights.
Not sure what I'll do with it,but it can sit in the display case until another Stargrave or Necromunda game comes along needing a big nasty mecha-wolf thingy!

Final pics, Super Mutant Behemoth from Fallout Wasteland Warfare. Really enjoyed this one, probably did the metals wrong way round as I painted them up as NMM then weathered rather than doing the weathering as i went along but pretty pleased with the end result.
Happy new year everyone!

Coming in at the last moment with Lt. Titus of the Ultramarines, hero of the entirely-unexpected Space Marine 2 (still can't believe they're making it, loved the first one). Dialed up the grimdark and gore a bit more than usual in homage to the game's ludicrous ultra-violence and overall grim tone, the result is a little messy but I do think it evokes the feeling I'm going for, just about...
As a reminder to everyone, new round will be up tomorrow, but there's still an extra day left on this one!

I got all six of mine to a point where they’re worth entering, not done per se, but I’ll be posting at some point today and getting them to 100% on my own time. Happy New Year all! Automatically Appended Next Post: 'Ere we go, I keep looking at these and seeing more that needs to be done, but for the sake of the competition, here's my entry. Please don't include the first (spoilered) pic, it's just proof that I got all six in the squad up to the same level of doneness; since we can only have five minis, one of the grots didn't make the cut.

Great job.
The sister's painting is very good and the details are well highlighted.
Out of curiosity, did you sculpt the 3D model of the head? or what model / file did you use?

@Maharg - Those ogres look so much better than the GW paintjob with the weird cartoonish skin! Also, stripey pants FTW.

OK, About time to formally close this one. I’ll try to get the vote up soon, but also need to recover from the holidays myself (which included driving 13 hours yesterday). So there might be some delays.
Everyone break out your forces of nature and start 2022 off with a roar.
Keep painting!
