I'm in the proces of building a Khorne alligned traitor guard army and I figured some of you might be interested in seeing the stuff I've got so far.
The most important aspect of any guard army is the basic infantry.
Finding good traitor models took me some time, but finally I settled on the lunar auxiallia models by a designer called ThatEvilOne.
I ordered a bunch of them via Etsy.
Since they were going to be dedicated to Khorne there was really only one colour to use a base...
Red, blood red.
This is the command squad of the, as yet unnamed, warband.
A platoon commander, vox guy, standard bearer and two blokes with volkites (that will be used as meltas).
Being a leader in a chaos warband is of course a dangerous job.
There's allways plenty of competition and Khorne encourages promotion by assasination.
This warband's commander has therefore secured himself a couple of bodyguards.
They started out as mining automatons, but recently they've appeard to be become possesed.
Feedback is welcome. I'll take some pictures of the infantry and post them later.

Any precisce Plans for seize of the force?

Thanks! I think it will end up being a 2k force. Maybe slightly more. I have quite a few tanks in different stages of completion and they tend to add up.

I was originally looking for blood-pact models / models with grotesque masks on. The few I could find were either very expensive, very ugly or very limited in poses. Ran into these guys by accident and Immediately loved them. The modeller has also designed chaos sigils in some of the armor pieces, so they really look the part without any converting required. That's a blessing as I'm really bad with resin and superglue.

Here's all the infantry I've managed to paint to date. It's five full squads with sergeant and one or more special weapons.
There's probably around 30 basic infantry still left unpainted.
I'm using contrast red to speed things up, but I've accidentally used a lighter primer on some of the models.
These did turn out a lot brighter than the other models so I've been using nuln oil to darken them down a bit.
Up close you can definately tell the difference but I've noticed that from a distance it doesn't really matter that much.
I really like the quantity over quality approach on these guys.
Next up is going to be some armour.
I had some spare Leman Russes laying around and I was able to get me three of these guys:

I had some spare Leman Russes laying around so I started with painting these in a nice bordeaux red. Khorne loves bordeaux.
The tanks needed some iconography so I used parts of the chaos sigils from the defiler's legs on the turret.
On Thingiverse I found a good looking 'Khorne-a-like' symbol to use on the hull.
I'm really happy with the way these tanks turned out. Nothing fancy, but a simple, utalitarian look and I love that colour red.
While browsing the 3d STL sites I ran into something that's simply to good te pass on.
Here's a sneak peak, the finished product will take some time (both to print and to convert/paint).
Can you tell what it is and can you guess what it's going to be?

Post by: DoctorDanny
The 3d-printer gods have provided me with two other pieces of the new vehicle:
It's not a sentinel.
The Archon Studio Wolverine Tanks turned out very well.
They originally come with just the main gun, So I had to add another turret weapon to use as the Leman Russ hull weapon.
The two heavy bolters on the fron of the other tank are the sponson mounted heavy bolters.
The ' Khorne' symbols are 3d-printed.
I really like them and at first I was a bit concerned that they would make the original Leman Russes look a bit 'cartoony' in comparison.
The uniform paint scheme does help a bit in tying it all together thankfully.
I've got another one of these things still in the box, so that one will turn up here at some point as well.

Well, I had some things finished allready.
With these paint schemes I can finish a 10 man infantry squad in three nights and most vehicles take about the same amount of time.
The biggest time investment is in printing tbh. I'll be showing some printed 'chimeras' and sentinels next and these took quite some time to get done properly.
3d printing is fun, but it takes quite some time to get right and can be extremely frustrating at times. Automatically Appended Next Post: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll wrote:Your paintjob really makes those minis look great. Thanks! I did send a couple of pictures to the guy selling them on Etsy.com.
Not quite sure how to get a hold of the designer though, I'm not much of a social media man.
Also, I need some advice on this model:
It is going to be a counts-as Demolisher tank commander.
The print hasn't been cleaned yet so it looks a bit rough around the details.
I'll be putting an arm/turret on this side of his torso to give him some more weapons options.
The problem is that the turret is up-scaled in the z-axis.
This was probably done to get a better proportion between the 'head' and the legs.
In itself I think it looks good, but the barrel ended up elliptical instead of round this way.
I could:
a) keep it like this.
b) downscale the z-axis to get a round barrel, but a smaller turret.
c) try to fit a round barrel on the elliptical one.
Opinions are welcome.

The PLA filament is very hard to work with. The printer constructs the model out of these strings and I've been having a very hard time modelling PLA after it's been printed. Cutting, clipping, drilling and sawing tend to result in frayed edges and parts of the print coming loose.
Perhaps I haven't found the right tools yet. A hot wire might work, but I'm not to keen on melting plastic in my small hobby room
I did print a round Demolisher barrel 'cap' last night and putting that over the existing barrel actually looks pretty good. I'll try to post some images of that later today.
Edit: This is how it ended up. Put a small 'barrel cap' on the elliptical barrel and I think it looks pretty good. Small gap now, due to it being held in place by sticky gum.
I've printed a multimelta and twin heavy bolter to put on the side of the turret to represent the sponson weapons. I'll magnetise these.
The hull weapon will be a heavy flamer on the front under the demolisher cannon.
Glueing will have to wait as my superglue decided to glue itself shut again and we're in lockdown. Oh, how I hate superglue!

First of all, sorry for drip-feeding the existing army, but taking photos and uploading them is still taking me quite some time, so I like to do these things a few at a time.
Back in the days I used to really love sentinels.
They were the first models that I tried converting and just the idea of a ramshackle scout walker somehow appeals to me.
That's why I have around 15 of the buggers in my assorted guard armies.
I bought those back in the days when GW models didn't cost you an arm and a leg.
Since these are the days of 3d-printing I figured I could round up some alternative sentinels somewhere.
I wanted the sentinels to look both classic and different at the same time.
I ran into these guys and figured they fitted the bill:
Anyway I finished three sentinels armed with bog standard multilasers.
One of them has a hunter killer missile.
The exhausts came from the bit-box, no idea what kit they used to belong to.
The one with the HK-missile has part of a Knight Meltacannon as a power unit.
PLA prints tend to end up a bit 'stripey', but lets be honest now, usually nobody looks at these models fron so close a distance.
The second one ended up a little less dark than the others.
It bothers me a bit, but I make a point of not re-doing models and accepting the 'happy little accidents'.
Feedback is welcome.

Excellent work! I really love the color scheme, it fits perfectly with both the army's traitor character and their armor style's mix of chainmail/furs. the slight difference in color shades isn't always a bad thing, I actually use 2 slightly different colors of khaki (same color, but the older paint pot has a lighter tone) for my Valhallan greatcoats, it gives a little variation if you mix the different tones into the same squad.
Have any plans for specialist troops? Veterans/special weapon squads or rough riders?

Special troops... Hadn't given that much thought yet.
I was planning on drafting the veterans from the regular guys, but a squad of specials would be nice yes.
Perhaps a stormtrooper squad. Iĺl try to find some good models for that.
I'm waiting on a squad of troopers with mortars, so that is definately coming.
Rough riders are no longer in de codex I think, but given the right steeds they would definately fit in the army.
Perhaps these genestealer guys on bikes could be the basis for that.
I had great fun with the Ambots in the first post, so I might get some more of them to turn into a full bullgryn squad.
That would also give me the chance to 'chaosify' them a bit more.

Small update:
I've started painting the Demolisher demon.
I coated it a dark red, similar to the tanks.
I then whitened the fleshy parts and painted them with contrast guiliman flesh.
The result wasn't demonic enough, so I added a layer of crimson wash.
This looked suitably demonic.
I then begun painting the armour panel edges bronze.
I've also printed some casualties to adourn his base.
A monster like this takes pride in his handywork, so we'll put some corpses and lots of blood on the base.
@ValhallanWinter inspired me to start looking into some special troops to add.
I've found some great mini's in the Anvil Industries Regiments line, but the price really holds me back.
Instead I dove into the bit-box and turned up some half finished palanite enforcers.
With a little work they can mutate into bad-ass stormtroopers.
Here's a sneak peak:
These two are based on the larger enforcers, with the stormshields.
I've ordered a pack of the regular dudes to form the stormtrooper squad.
The hellgun is the enforcer boltgun with a hellgun-barrel on it. I quite like the effect.

I've managed to finish the demolisher demon engine yesterday.
Painting the thing I found that the backside of the turret was really ugly.
This side was the downside when the model was printed and it did a terrible job of it.
Decided I needed to cover it up with something.
I had a spare grate laying around from the Wolverine tanks.
To keep with the chains theme the model has going on I printed two chains and added them to the grate.
I'm pretty happy with how it ended up.
The front: (on the photo the front chain is in a weird position, but that's easily fixed as the chain is semi-flexible).
Now all it needs is a nice base to stand on.
I started a 120mm oval base with some cork, some printed barrels and casualties.
I might add some sandbags, but I feel that this will probably be more than enough clutter.
I might print a second one after I've completed the stormtrooper squad.
The palanite enforcers I ordered will arrive tomorrow so I'll work on these first.

I was browsing the STL sites for a nice transport and ran into several nice ones.
The one I finally chose was the one you can see in the photos below.
I decided on this one because it has a nice utalitarian style, has wheels and is relatively easy to print.
Unfortunately this was during Printer War III (I have occasional skirmishes with my Ender 3pro) so the prints didn't come out great.
I also have the feeling that there's something missing vertically. They look too much like shoe-boxes right now.
They need something, but I don't really know what.
Ideas are welcome.

I see what you mean, I feel like they need panel lines, maybe thin strips of platicard to break up the slabs of armor?

Looking great painted up, the fleshy leg of the demolisher walker is very gross but looks cool.
I agree with Kid_Kyoto, maybe some panel lines or even just some spikey bits to break up the profile would help.

Suiting! I think part of the "shoeboxiness" is that the sides have the same slope as the front.
If you're looking mostly for verticality, could you raise the turret somehow?
130965
Post by: DoctorDanny
I've completed the test model for the stormtrooper squad.
I want them to look suitably intimidating, combining the basic human aesthetic of the troopers with a bit more chaotic look.
It's a necromunda palanite enforcer with a reiver head.
The weapon is an enforcer boltun with a barrel from the scions hellgun.
The Khorne symbol is a 3d print. It's a bit too big, but this is the smallest I could reliably print it in PLA.
It looks a little bit silly in an 80's public-enemy-clock-around-your-neck kind of way, but I rather like it.
I suppose Khorne approves of over the top things anyway.
I was trying to fit all kinds of bayonets to the gun (it is Khornate after all!), but I couldn't find one that looked right.
Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll wrote:Suiting! I think part of the "shoeboxiness" is that the sides have the same slope as the front.

This is also a good suggestion, I'll take a look at some turret alternatives.

Allright. Looks like I've got a bunch of stormtroopers all finished up.
Here's the pics:
This fine gentleman right here is the sergeant. He's basically a palanite supressor with a nice reiver head. The chainsword is from the chaos SM set.
Here we have three regular stormtroopers with hellguns. They're based on the palanite enforcers, but one has a supressor body.
The hellguns are scion barrels glued on the enforcer boltguns.
I'll be putting bayonets on the weapons when I get my hands on some Dark Eldar bayonets.
This maniac right here has a plasmagun. It's a cut up deathwatch combi-plasma, glued on the enforcer shotgun. I quite like the proportions.
Finally there's two guys with volleyguns. They're using the weapon thingy from the supressor set, don' t know what it's supposed to be, but I figured it would work as a rapid fire energy weapon.
The guy on the right has his head too far out, Iooks a bit giraffy compared to the other one. I'll have to fix that.
I've got quite some enforcer bodies left, but no reiver heads, so it'll be a little while before I can make some more.
Edit: Every warband needs a warmaster. Here's what I was considering:
It's a starcide vampire with a boltpistol and a scion knife hand.
The head is by Liber Daemonica I think.

I think that they're some sort of less than lethal grenade launcher... Don't know why they couldn't just use an updated Webber model though...

The Wolverine and Demolisher both look fantastic and fit the cultist theme really well. As for the printed Chimera I agree with the others that another turret would help, probably a boxy one to match the overall shape. I think it could do with some more brass bits too, maybe paint a trim where the rivets are? Can’t wait to see the war master painted up too, the vampire looks a great model and very cool leader

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. I'm taking it a bit slower a the moment as I'm also building some crews and npcs for Stargrave.
On my to do list:
-Add strips to the shoebox-tanks (I'm thinking tie-wraps).
-Add antennae to them. I've built four GW bastion kits, and I believe there's a whole antennae array in there, thanks for the idea Ferryman).
-Complete the stormtroopers (I still have 7 or eight to go, once I get the reiver heads).
-Complete the infantry....sigh... 20 troopers, 3 specialists, 5 officers, 3 mortar teams. Not looking forward to that.
-Add a psyker (I got one of the Blackstone Fortress rogue psyker models).
After that, I might:
-Add some more sentinels (I've found some wicked STLs).
-Add more transports.
-Add one or two of the demon-walkers.
That should take me way past 2k I think....
Edit: hold on a sec. Rogue pykers in a Khorene Warband? Nah, scratch that. The psyker will have to move over to Stargrave.

I present to you Magister Gormuth Rayk...

I was worried that he might look a bit too 'ornate' compared to the regular guys, but that works out fine as well:
I also like that he's quite a lot taller than the regulars.
Makes him took intimidating.

So I ran into 1k points of Chaos marine scum last week.
The battle was lost due to dishonourable warp trickery by the enemy.
(In reality he played it smart and managed to lock up two of my tanks in close combat turn one).
Hobby time was a bit sparse last week, but I have managed to finish the 10 man stormtrooper squad.
Two guys have volleyguns, two of them have plasmaguns.
I reckoned that the squad really needed an officer to order them into battle.
First-rank-fire second-rank-fire or rerolling ones are things that Khorne approves of.
So I've added a damogaur to lead this elite section of the warhost into battle.
He's armed with a chainsword and a plasma pistol.
I originally intended for him to have the command rod to issue a second order, but decided against it.
No true warrior chooses a rod over a plasma pistol...
Your feedback is of course very welcome.

I received a small package from my print-guy in the UK.
It contained 3 mortar teams, some special weapons and a bunch of officers.
Figured it would be most fun to start with the mortar teams.
First team. The guy at the front clearly failed his noise marine training. Must be why he chose to worship Khorne.
Second team. These lads set up their mortar close to a telephone pole.
Third team. I was out of large bases so I decided to print the ones for these teams.
Turned out my bed wasn't level (it never is) and this base came out particulary warped.
I tried to fix it with greenstuff. I need some practice with that it seems.
Also, I wonder why I put the warped piece at the 'front' of the scene.
Edit: I fixed it up a bit allready, couldn't stand it
Next up will be some officers. I especially look forward to the two models with power fists.
Completely useless in game but very nice models.
I might make a small diorama for one of them, something like this one I made for my Grey Knight librarian:

Eventhough the painting is fast enough with this scheme I'm starting to get a little bored of chaos troopers.
Luckily there's only like 25 or so of them left to do :/
Here we have an officer with a power fist, three basic troopers and a specialist with a grenade launcher.

So I'm currently doing some other projects, like Stargrave models and more terrain.
Still, I did manage to get the final Wolverine Tank built and painted.
I wanted to turn it into a demolisher, but I couldn't really find a barrel that fit the tank without looking silly.
Here's the finished tank:
It's fitted with a battlecannon, hull mounted heavy bolter and a co-axial heavy stubber.
There's a hunter killer mounted to the side of the turret.
There's some barbed wire around the turret to discourage enemy infantry from hitching a ride.
I've still got some infantry to paint up, but I'm in no hurry.

Since I had some time on my hands and since people here really liked the first one I figured I could make another of the demonic tank monsters.
I set about printing the basic parts and gave some thoughts on its loadout.
I allready had one with a demolisher and I have another demolisher Leman Russ in the army, so another main weapon was needed.
The latest 40k balance update has given the guard autowound on sixes.
This applies to Khornate guardsmen as well it seems, so something with a lot of shots looked like a good plan.
I printed a Punisher barrel and a side-serving of heavy bolters.
The punisher originally turned out too long, so I truncated it and stuck in into the oval demolisher slot on the original thing.
It looked a bit off, so I added a chaos-engraved bit I found in one of my boxes.
I bought these dirt cheap ants at the local toystore and was waiting for a nice base to put them on.
This was the one.
No base is complete without a dead guardsman on it.
The ants do need something to feed on right?
The rear of the tank was the underside of the print and somehow it allways turns out looking very bad.
I covered the other one up with some grating and I might still do the same with this one.
Here's the two of them side by side:
I now notice that the new one still needs a red base trim
So, your feedback is welcome!

With the latest balance patch all guard infantry squads now get heavy weapons for free.
Khorne likes free stuff, especially when said free stuff causes more blood to flow.
DoctorDanny only likes free stuff when it's really free, so there's no way in the warp that I'll be buying more heavy weapon boxes, sorry GW.
I did have some old heavy weapon sprues lying around, so I printed a bunch of 60mm bases to fit them on.
There were also quite a lot of unpainted traitors that liked nothing better than to man some heavy weapons.
So, I proudly present the first batch of heavy weapons:
There's another group with two autocannons and another heavy bolter still awaiting painting.
I also finished up all the platoon officers for the army:
I'm quite happy with how they ended up.

I love the dead dudes in front of the heavy weapons, did they decide they advance the wrong way?

Well, you know what they say about Khorne...
He doesn't care where the blood comes from.
The corpses make for good scatter terrain or objectives btw. We play mostly narrative lately and this chaos army is the 'npc' antagonist army.
Question: I'm still looking for a suitably chaossy/khornate Basilisk or Manticore to add to the roster. If anyone can point me towards a good STL or commercial proxy model I'd be thankful!
13664
Post by: Illumini
For the basilisk, the stock one with chaos crew, chains and markings is perfect IMO. Like this:
For the manticore, I like Katyusha style vehicles for renegades, so maybe a conversion of a genestealer vehicle, or an .stl in that style.
130965
Post by: DoctorDanny
I like that suggestion Illumini. The Goliath looks right at home in a chaos army and there's plenty of place on that vehicle to add some crew and either a big cannon or a rocket launcher.
The best part is that I have a spare one hanging around that acts as a Taurox that never gets used Needs some red spray love to fit right in.
I have a Knight battlecannon barrel that looks about the right size. A Leman Russ sponson as a rotation point.... I see something coming together.
To Be Continued, after I finish (grow tired of) the Warhound that is.

Post by: DoctorDanny
We all know that Khorne loves close combat. Swords, Knives, clubs and bare knuckles.
We also know that hand to hand combat isn't what the guard is all about.
After consulting some heretical scriptures it was discovered that Khorne also approves of destruction at range.
So long as it is done with extreme overkill.
Well, it won't get more extreme than this....
The Lupercal Superheavy Vanquisher tank.
It's based on a PLA printed Macharius Vanquisher.
As my printer seems to hate my guts it just couldn't resist completely frakking up the top of the turret after printing the rest of the tank allmost flawlessly.
A blanket of sandbags fixed that nicely though.
I replaced the sponson stubbers with printed heavy bolters and fitted a dreadnought stormbolter on the side of the turret.
To better tie it in with the rest of my heretic armour I added some spikey things and skulls to the front.
Finally I added some chain to complete the traitor image.
I must say that I'm pleased with the result and I'm curious how the thing will perform on the table.

The tank looks really cool, you must have your printer well dialled in as it’s hard to spot it’s a print. The pic of the warhound though is takes the win though, love the choice of focal length, it really adds to the imposing scale!

Post by: DoctorDanny
Thanks guys. Printing this bad boy was a torment the first time around as my printer went through one of its 'machine uprising' phases. The one in this thread was the second one I printed and this one went very smoothly thanks in no small part to the excellent stl files.
I'm curious what the new codex will bring to the guard. I have a feeling that we'll be seeing traitor specific things for the guard, so this army will possibly get some more expansions later this year.

Post by: DoctorDanny
In the meantime I've been getting my ass handed to me in the competitive scene playing Guard.
No surprises there, but I really hate losing.
Last tournament I played grey knights instead, but I'm a guardsman at heart, so I've been looking at the best list to ... well, not win, but basically not lose everything.
I'm banking on Hammer of the Emperor with high AP and settled on a Lambdan Lions stormtrooper force.
Ordered a bunch of second hand scions to fill out my troops.
I've got plenty of Valkyries, so I'm all good on that front.
Didn't have any tauroxes though and the Taurox prime seems like a good firepower platform.
Problems are that: 1) GW is getting as little of my money as I can get away with and 2) the taurox is a very ugly model.
I did manage to find a great STL, the minotaur IFV by the excellent modeller NFEYMA on Cults3d.
Right now the gattling gun and the dual volley guns seem like the best choice, but you never know what happens when the new codex drops, so I've decided to magnetize the weapons.
The chassis and hull take forever to print and don't look like much when they're finished.
Here's the weapon options, battle-cannon, gattling-cannon, twin autocannon and twin volleygun.
Fully assembled you get something like this.
I've got the first three (of six) partially painted:
Added some hellguns to the hull to fit them in with the stormtrooper theme.
The wooden beam on the back is from the Archon Studio Wolverine kit.
I still had some chain hanging around so all the Minotaurs have a length of chain attached to them.
I'm going to put some on the front of one as well.
This one is armed with a battlecannon.
There's some AK Interactive camo netting arriving tomorrow and I still have some nice transfers to add to them.
I'll update when I have these added as well.
130965
Post by: DoctorDanny
I've finished the other three Minotaurs:
Decorated them with chains, camo-netting and random vehicle bits.
I really want to add stormbolters, but there's no surface that will take them and not look silly.
A pintle near the top hatch would be the best place, but I can't seem to get them attached properly.
Ideally I'd like to magnetize them so that they can be removed.
I really liked the model and there's also an STL for a truck.
Printed and painted one of those to use in missions or as scenery.
I really like the model and I'll deffo print some more of them in the future.
I took the stormtroopers on a mission against a 2k force of blood angels and they performed ok enough.
I did notice that my Valkyries didn't do much good as gunships, so I'm building something that flies and carries twin punisher cannons....
13664
Post by: Illumini
That truck is ace, love to see non-combat pieces of 40k engineering

The Minotaurs are cool little wagons that painted up well. That truck is super cool, it’ll make for a great objective to recover whatever’s underneath the camo net!

Thanks guys.
I've also finished the (printed) vulture.
Not really sold on the cockpit, but I still suck at painting glass.
130965
Post by: DoctorDanny
I've finished vulture number two:
Very happy with this one. I've painted the cockpit struts(?) black on this one to better contrast the blue glass.
Was so much better that I also redid the previous vulture in the same way.
Next up is either these guys:
Depending on their delivery time that is.
Or a variant of this monster for the traitor guard:
https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/broadsword-superheavy-tank
I'll start printing the Broadsword (that'll likely take more than a week anyway). Automatically Appended Next Post: And in a surprise move I painted one of my new Catachan sentinels today:
These guys were some of the last models to be printed on my old (and cursed) printer, so they're pretty rife with print-lines.
Still quite happy with the end result.

The traitor Superheavy is coming along nicely....
130965
Post by: DoctorDanny
So let's consult the Khorne checklist:
Big? Check!
Red? Not yet...
Big gun? Check!
More guns? Check!
More big guns? Check!
Chains? Check, but kinda a Slaanesh thing too.
Barbed wire? Not yet...
Skulls? Coming soon.
Blood? BLOOD? Sure thing!
The main barrel is interchangable with a longer one I also have printed.
The sides with the sub-turrets can be replaced (magnetized) with other sides with either 1 or 0 turret slots.
I did kinda screw it up with the chain at the front though.
The top part can slide off and be replaced with the 'Shadowsword' top.
Not anymore though with that chain in the way.
I considered removing the chain, but then it hit me...
Why not just print another chassis so that you have two big tanks.
I consulted Khorne and guess what? He approved!

Post by: DoctorDanny
Not just a Mathilda.
With some minor alterations it can transform into a superheavy SU-122.
This is with the 'single sponson' sides.
I've also got a set of 'no sponsons' sides in the oven.
Looks like I've got some painting to do
130965
Post by: DoctorDanny
Allright then. The Baneblade variant is allmost finished.
Once again this is a design by the talented designer NFEYMA over on cults3d, make sure you check out his stuff if you like to print 40k models.
I'm quite happy with how it turned out. There's still some chaos tidbits coming, but that's in the future.
This one has the two sponsons sides and I've armed it with all heavy bolters.
Here's some more photo's comparing it with the Macharius and a standard Leman Russ...

It does yeah. I have three different barrels for it. I'll try to get the TD parts painted next weekend and post some images of that configuration.
A club buddy has made a nice sacrificed guardsman that'll fit nicely to one of the sides.
I'll get that one strung up as well.

It's indeed a new FDM printer (Ender 3 S1) and it is a fantastic printer. What also helps is that the model is really really good.
Like I said a club buddy put together a sacrificed guardsman that ended up on the side of the tank:
I've allmost got all the parts painted now. This configuration is the 'Shadowsword' type with the 0-sponsons sides.
This one is fitted with the large laser cannon, but I've also got the heavy siege mortar weapon painted.
Still to go are some heavy flamer turrets, the 1-sponson sides and a big fat cannon.

Thanks!
I'm doing some minor detailing now and I'll try to post a shot of the full army soon.
They'll be attending a tournament at the end of the month, so I'm busy finishing things up.
I hope they'll allow me to use some of the more outlandish proxies (like the demonic walker tanks)...
I'm currently working on two astropaths to keep the superheavy alive a little longer on the battlefield.
Khorne disapproves of psykers, but I do think he loves demons, so the astropaths will take the form of minor demons.
I hope he'll allow it...
Here's a sneak peak of the two tank commanders I've added:
Any tank commander worth his salt carries a sword into battle!
And a nice hot cup of recaf of course...
13664
Post by: Illumini
Gonna be a bit hard to get that recaff down in their moon suits
130965
Post by: DoctorDanny
Yeah, you're right...
Maybe it's engine oil, or some sort of unholy lubricant?
Blood for the blood god?
Perhaps someone inside the tank simply had to go and this unlucky bloke has the job of tossing it out?
13664
Post by: Illumini
He is a super heavy tank commander, probably has an integrated recaff straw in his suit
130965
Post by: DoctorDanny
I've built the two astropaths to cast psychic barrier and nightshroud on the Shadowsword.
I'm not sure about them yet.
Aside from the missed moldlines on the horns of the guy on the left I'm not really sure they fit the aesthetics of the rest of the army.
I suppose I could go for the official 'That Evil One' sorceres that go with the range:
Feedback is welcome.
13664
Post by: Illumini
They work just fine, but the rendered ones look like a better fit.
84491
Post by: gobert
I dunno, Psykers should stand apart from the rest of the army. They are special after all. To me the official guys would blend in unless you gave them glowy glyphs and helmet openings or casting hands? Also, frigging mould lines! I always spot at least one when I finish a mini!

Post by: DoctorDanny
I have a club championship tournament coming up and I've decided to honour Khorne and bring the traitors, Shadowsword included....
The first testdrive went pretty well as I ended up facing a guy with Imperial Knights. The Shadowsword is supposed to be a Titan-killer and let me assure you, it is.
Since I'll be unlikeliy to score many points against other opponents I figured I should go for the cool-factor.
So, I've been busy making display-stands for the infantry:
I've got another fwo printed, waiting for paint and there's a final one in the print que.
With the new codex incoming there's some rumours dropping.
One of these is the dreaded 'only one type of special weapon per squad' limitation that GW seems to get all Slaneshy about lately.
The second is a gut feeling that Superheavies are going to be really tasty.
So, I've started printing another Broadsword chassis and asembled some more stormtroopers.
Since I'm flat out of Reiver heads I've orderd some resin heads from Greenstuffworld, I'll show these heads soon.
First though, here's my new guy with Melta-carbine:
The carbine is made using a Palanite enforcer Sniper rifle with a Deathwatch combi-melta part.
I really liked that head, eventhough it doesn't really fit with the reiver heads or the new heads.
Still decided to just use it though.
Edit: Here's a trooper with the new head:
It's not as good as the reiver head. Automatically Appended Next Post: Browsing wahapedia I came across Gotfret de Montbard.
A close combat character that denies psykers and has a bunch of close combat related bonusses.... sounds kinda....Khorny....
He's still being worked on, but here's a sneak peak:

Thanks for pointing me to your paint blog! And you're right, that Broadsword "mini" looks fabulous.
(Also, surprised that you didn't make your KV2 sentinel a Defiler, but I guess you'd have to be CSM for that...)

Post by: DoctorDanny
I've managed to finish the second superheavy.
Since I allready had the turret and sponson-parts this was simply a matter of printing another chassis.
Still took like a week though as the parts are really chonky.
Here's some quick pictures:
The two monsters side by side.
A Khornate tank can't really go without a trophy rack of sorts.
I have a feeling these things are going to be completely bonkers in the new codex.
As it stands I can field a shadowsword, baneblade and a macharius and then add in some infantry and support armour within 2000 points.
Somehow I feel this should make for quite an intimidating force on the table.

Post by: DoctorDanny
Thanks guys,
With the new codex on the way I've been having some plans to add to the army.
The first thing is that I'm working on some field ordnance batteries.
I've got two heavy lascannon thingies more or less ready for painting:
I'll be adding some guitar string (low E) inbetween the powerpack and the cannon.
There's two large barreled field artillery pieces also in the works, but I've ran out of filament for the carriages :(
I've also found a model that can work as a rocket barrage model, but it turned out quite a bit larger than the others.
I'll still paint it up though to see if the size difference is really a problem.
I've ordered up some more infantry models, including two tech priests.
What I was really looking for was a model to proxy that fancy new lord Solar.
Instead of a regal, fancy, highborn leader I was looking for something a lot more heritical.
I ran into this model:
He looks suitably heritcal!
130965
Post by: DoctorDanny
I've got the first of the heavy lascannons nearly finished.
It still needs a little trimming on the base.
I'm really new to this OSL business and I still think it's pretty scary, so be gentle
The second one is nearly done and then I'll start working on the rocket artillery and field gun.
121268
Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll
Oh, I love the OSL on the power pack to the side. Looks great!
123017
Post by: Olthannon
Very nice, the OSL is very cool.
84491
Post by: gobert
Yeah, that’s some nice OSL, though maybe the bit on the ground by the cell is a little too close? But the transitions are great And the one from the targeting eye above the barrel is fantastic! It’s the Arch-Lord Solar that I want to see, that mini is a perfect fit I think!
130965
Post by: DoctorDanny
Hey guys, the ordnance batteries are finished.
Took me long enough as I did some interior redecorating at home and most of my hobby stuff is packed.
Also, the lord solar and extra infantry models I ordered on Etsy seem to be stuck at a British post office for A COMPLETE MONTH now.
As if Brexit wasn't bad enough without strikes and incompetance.
Come on my dear Islanders, get your act together.
Anyway...
The heavy mortar is an STL file I upscaled from Epic proportions.
Added some Khorne symbols and artillery shells.
Edit: With the new Arks of Omens detachment surfacing I'm really considering adding a third superheavy tank. Somebody please stop me!
The second Heavy Lascannon also has an external power pack.
I've added a targetting system from (I believe) the Imperial Bastion kit.
Sprinkled some traitor guards on the bases to complete the scene.
Edit: with the new Arks of Omens detachment surfacing, I'm really considering adding a third superheavy tank. Somebody please stop me!

Post by: Mr Nobody
I have one nitpick and I don't know if anyone else has pointed it out, but couldn't you print those field guns on the resin printer instead? They're not that big so it should fit and it should look a little nicer.
130965
Post by: DoctorDanny
I could if I had one
The resin models are bought. I'm kind of hesitant to bring a resin printer with all the chemicals, fumes and extra cleaning work into my home.
130965
Post by: DoctorDanny
I'm waiting for my new traitors to arrive and my third Superheavy to finish printing.
What better to do than convert some Lizardmen into .... well... Lizardmen with guns?
They're Wargames Atlantic Lizardmen armed with lascarbines and a longlas.
I've added some Tyrannid grubbins as armor/decoration.
I've been trying to get some other special weapons on them, but these are simply to big for their thin arms.
No idea what they'll be played as. Perhaps an Imperial Guard killteam.
There's 15 more of them on the sprue, so there's still fun to be had.

Nice work on the space lizards, the skin looks great.
130965
Post by: DoctorDanny
Here's the traitor version of the new Lord Solar:
I haven't figured out the correct base yet, so this is obviously a placeholder.
The guy is a Stationforge STL AdMech alternative, but I figured he'd really fit the bill.
I've made a bit of an oopsie and bought the wrong contrast red, this is Flesh Tearers red and the other models are done in Blood Angels red.
I do think that if I paint some more models with this red they will actually blend in quite well with the rest of the army.
121268
Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll
That's a great looking model - I like the play off the Iron Halo he has!
84491
Post by: gobert
Those lizardmen look cool Denny, I could imagine the chaos aligned guards enlisting some of them as conscripts. As for the chaos solar, he’s a stunning model and I’m impressed you managed to balance him on that tiny base! The Flesh Tearers red looks nice on him too, and the plan to mix the reds between units sounds good

Post by: DoctorDanny
So, it's been a while since I did any hobbying.
Then I came across some very good looking STLs that would really add to the traitor army.
First of these is the Balius Battle Strider, by Nfyema on Cults3d.com.
https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/balius-battle-strider
I've added some chaos iconography and the Khorne mandated chains.
I'm not too happy with the base, but I don't really feel like redoing it tbh
There's a second one in the works as I messed up the magnetizing and I'd like to be able to field it with two ranged weapons as well.
Then there's the Superheavy armoured transport:
I've added some old chaos vehicle stuff to this one and the stowage options of the next project:
Nfyema's Durandal heavy tank, https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/durandal-breakthrough-tank
I've got this one fully printed with all the options magnetized, but I'm not looking forward to painting another tank.
There's also a third baneblade fully printed, because....ehh.... why not?

Thanks! I use an Ender S1 and it really isn't that much of a space investment.
Printing large models does take a lot of time, but once you've got your printer set up correctly it's mostly a hands-off thing.

Yes, it's PLA, not resin. I print these vehicles at the highest quality settings and they generally come out great.
No chemicals and toxic fumes.
Edit: just to be clear, it's only the vehicles that I print myself the infantry models are resin and I usually buy these through Etsy.com.

The walker thing looks cool. I trust khorne approves of the chains!
130965
Post by: DoctorDanny
I surely hope that Khorne approves as there's two more of them on the way
Here's a WIP of the first one. This guy will have two ranged weapon arms.
I printed the legs in their separate parts so that I could easily pose this big boy on the container.
The third one will probably have two melee hands.
The STL comes with a chainsword, but I think that one looks a bit goofy.
I've printed a tentacle arm from the regular GW chaos knight kit, bit that one's a bit too large.
It might be a bit untill you see the melee knight posted I guess

Post by: DoctorDanny
Allright, Knight number two is finished.
I'll get some nice photo's with other models and some background up when number three is ready.
That might be some time as my Ender S1 seems to have developed a temperature problem that I haven't been able to fix yet.
Second knight is all ranged. I've printed two of all the weapon options in a left and a right arm variant.
Here you can see him with two thermal cannon blasters.
With tactical rocks being a thing these days I figured a tactical container will also do just fine for a Knight:
The 'face tentacles' are van Saar pony-tails.
The top weapons are also fully interchangable.
I have the double autocannon, a missile launcher top and two 'clean' tops.
The last knight will feature two close combat fists, possibly with a huge chainsword in one of them.
121268
Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll
A great looking custom kit!
130965
Post by: DoctorDanny
And here's knight number three, assembled and unpainted:
I've added lots of printed chain to the head and given him a fully close combat loadout.
He's on a printed base with a destroyed armiger to stand on.
I still need to burn the 'PLA-hairs' of some of the parts, I'll do that when my wife's not at home.
Somehow she doesn't like me using the stove to melt plastic in the kitchen. Can't imagine why.
The 'crown of spears' is slightly off-centre and that kind of bothers me.
It's glued on with a combination of pva and superglue though, so there's no way in hell that that is ever coming off again
I'm considering adding another chainsword to the outstretched right arm....
84491
Post by: gobert
Really awesome prints! I actually quite like the crown being off centre, seems more chaosy and sadistic that way
