So a few things it could be having seen it earlier and thought about it
1) Could be a new Warhammer+ video series or episode. Themed around Space Hulk
2) Could be a re-release or a new release of Space Hulk. Fits with all the general themes of unknown spooky ships floating around.
Space Hulk certainly fits the whole "BIG" angle as those are vast ships floating in space. Interestingly I spoke recently about the idea of seeing the next adventure release for 40K being a theme of Space Hulk. However I wouldn't think that with Cursed City only just out (evne if it hadn't vanished for half a year) its a bit soon for GW to return to 40K. That is unless they are doing away with only running one at a time and are going to run two concurrently - one for each major game system. Which they could totally do and wouldn't be a bad idea. Blackstone Fortress clearly still sells well even whilst Cursed City is on the cards so GW could easily run two new such games at the same time.
The impression I get is that it’s something forcibly docking with an Imperium ship, rather than an Imperium Ship forcibly docking with another ship, such as a Space Hulk?
Could it be a brand new Xenos, given origin is unknown?
Kinetochore wrote: Either that or its a Spaceship full of Squats and the "big" is a bit of a joke (i.e. in the inverse of Little John etc)
The rumoured Squats were my first thought, on the basis they might be able to dock with Imperial vessels but haven't in so long it took a bit of time for the codes to work etc, hence the denied and then granted bit.
Probably won't be anything that exciting. Watch it be for paint dropper bottles.
In all seriousness though, I can't see it being a new Battlefleet Gothic or Space Hulk rerelease, just because it feels like GW have quite a lot of boxed games coming in the next few months as it is?
Anyone able to do a frame by frame looking for tidbits?
I scrubbed through the frames, and no, there is no hidden info or details. There is a slight pan and zoom towards the console along with a slight blur effect on the console when it switches from "denied" to "granted" but that's it.

Y'know, you might not be far off the mark.
One of the Psychic Awakening books had a Squat vessel being ID'd by an Explorator group.
Yep that's what I'm thinking, plus BoB from War of Sigmar suggested when that snippet came out a game on a squat ship might be coming.
Perfect thing to release on April fools- Squats return has always been seen as a bit of a joke..

It'd be one hell of a prank to announce a legit release on April 1st.
I would absolutely love the return of BFG. The Siege of Terra would be an easy way to relaunch it, since they would only need to start with a small number of ship models as both sides would be using the same ships.
I still have my Imperial and Necron fleets, as well as everything I could buy during the Great Specialist Games Closeout.
Sadly, I do not expect BFG to come back soon.

Sadly it will be a new scale game like Space Hulk, only in 12mm scale so your table can be the full size of the ship. 12mm so it's Bigger than Epic/AT and can still get great detail, but small enough that your squad can fit onto a couple of bases.
I honestly think this might be Squats. With the rumours about them coming, the mention of "Something Big" (A pun if it is squats), and how a Mechanicus ship in Psychic Awakening encountered a Squat vessel (and being in complete disbelief about it), I can see them announcing Squats as an April Fools joke...and then having them turn out to be real.

they would get me with that and I'd love them for it too.
Squats'd be nice, especially with Ash Wastes coming at the same time for more land train action. But let's not work ourselves into a frenzy over a zero-information teaser.

The nice thing about BFG was that ship scale didn't matter for gameplay. Everything was measured in regards to the bases and center of the bases due to the vastness of space. Of course, if a new version changed that fundamental aspect... :(
judgedoug wrote: Looks like it is a corpse that is floating just out of frame on the left side.
Yeah, there's a hand but you can't see anything to really go off of to describe anything about it.
Since it's a lifeless floating corpse hand and the computer terminals look like they're fritzing, I'll hazard to guess it has something to do with being boarded after a void battle.
I'd LOVE a Kill Team Boarding Action campaign box with Naval Voidsmen versus some baddies. Esp since I don't think anything has yet to be announced post-Nachmund
How is the hand floating? To me it looks like it's just there. I would guess it's BFG. We've seen titan being shot by a lance in Heresy trailer. So assuming titans are for A:T, lance could've mean incoming BFG as well...

Well it's not moving and in a rictus pose, so...
I highly doubt they'd (a) rerelease BFG at all (I rate it's chances somewhere around Mordheim), and if they did, (b) not in such an underwhelming way

Wasn't this also meant to be the case with the designs of the ships themselves? I'm sure I remember reading something saying that the way weapons were depicted on the miniatures weren't how they actually were and that there were meant to be huge amounts of weapons on either side rather than the few shown. It seems that those few shown have become how they are canonically however.

Perhaps, but gosh I hope not with the board game components. I doubt a re-use of those sprues otherwise the teaser would have some at least minor nurgle-y hint, which it doesn't

I would be shocked if something like that was announced without any leaks or verifiable rumors. How long have we had pics of the new HH box set that wasn't announced until Adepticon? People are getting full codexes a month before they release. No way Squats are coming back and nobody has heard anything about it.

We have heard about it - there have been mentions of squats coming back in a (so far) verified set of rumours.

They said in an interview somewhere (can't remember but it was at a con) that they looked at redoing Epic and BFG, BFG was their choice but the specialist games team was too busy with their existing games to dedicate the manpower that would be necessary to bring it back. It's still on the table for the future whenever they have the time. I would guess the slowdown in releases for the other specialist games (aside from Necromunda) could be because the specialist games team has started on BFG. That's what I'm hoping for anyway. Main point is it's about 1000x more likely than Mordheim because they haven't said anything about Mordheim but specifically said "yes we want to do BFG, we don't have time right now but it's on the table for the future"

What you expect? Pics of codex? Just because gw would announce squats doesn't mean it's out next month. Gw could do sisters and prehype it.
We have had rumour(from which stuff has panned out) saying squats are coming. For like over half a year.

You're right, I forgot about that. In that case I would say squats are a possibility. My money is on another board game like Spacehulk rather than BFG or Squats but that's just because I like to keep my expectations low about GW rather than being constantly disappointed.
I do worry that if squats ever happen, they'll be a disappointment. That they won't match whats in my head- either be really boring or over-adorned with geegaws and do-dads.
Togusa wrote: What about a new Blackstone Fortress game or expansion?

I had a chance to play space hulk a few years back. I found it to be very dull and bland. Is there really a big draw for it?
Well, I managed to get a lot out of Lost Patrol so I think that speaks volumes. Its also Termies vs Genies...and I did enjoy the old EA game from the very early 90s. Also got the Blood Angels card game too.
It would be nice to have a copy of the actual game, I guess.

If it’s Space Hulk, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s NEW,UPDATED,PRIMARISIZED with aggressors vs old style genestealers.
I mean Squats popped up in the rumoured list of new releases last year that has been proven to be quite accurate so far... maybe there is some truth in this April Fool's joke?
And who would have thought we would ever have a fully realised range of Genestealer Cults 10 years ago?
This video cost too much to make for it to be a prank. It's very clearly a new Space Hulk. The prank is to release it on April Fools, but the thing is real for sure.
Maaaybe the Squat bit at the end might be fake as it's very short and seems more lazily done, so it might not be Squat heroes, but it's Space Hulk 100% IMO.
That was quite a cool video. At first I thought a) Battlefleet Gothic, thenb) new Space Hulk (loved the Captain pinned to the chair with his own sword) and then c) Squats, of course.
The best option is of course is d) all of the above.
Being animated (kind of) makes me think it's real. IIRC their other April fools jokes were skits performed by Peachy and co., left handed paintbrushes etc.

That's not a squat it's a new design true-scale Firstborn model.
I mean, if you genuinely believe that GW do leak the stuff on purpose themselves, then it's absolutely easy enough and smart to stick an April Fool in there.
Also, there is a pretty clear difference between ‘Primaris lieutenant the movie’ and ‘we’re bringing back the squats’ in terms of the effect of the joke. No one cares about a Primaris Lieutenant film. Lots of people want the Squats to come back.
Olthannon wrote: Yeah I think the animation gives me a touch more hope.

A touch more hope doesn't mean HOLYTUTTIFRUTTIDINGDONGSITSREAL.
It means it's a bit more effort to go into for a big deal within the community. If it's just an April Fools joke then fair play, but I have a touch more hope.

Sure. Which is why the Primaris Lieutenant the Movie never actually fooled anyone in an April's Fool-kinda way. As far as the idea of April Fools goes, Squats fit the assignment much better
The “they’ve done jokes with animated stuff before” doesn’t necessarily work, because that Lieutenant movie joke was most definitely made using reused assets. This trailer doesn’t have that, unless most of the assets are going to be used in a future Space Hulk game.

Ok, and? They're regularly producing animated shows now, they don't need to reuse assets.

That still doesn’t make the time and money spent on creating those assets worthwhile for a joke. The amount of effort needed for what was shown isn’t going to happen on a small side project meant as a marketing joke.
It still could be a joke, but I think that it is most likely then that that last shot with the Squat is a replacement of what the actual reveal could be.

I don’t think it’s a particularly good idea for companies to actually get peoples hopes up with something they actually want for an April fools joke and then piss them off by it just being a joke, and I imagine GW know that too. They’ve always been pretty obviously jokes and things no one actually wants in the past.
One other thing in the "it's real" camp is the cinematic itself. The code says access denied and then access granted.. as if something with an old code managed to get through.

I point to companies like Hasbro funding and commissioning an entire freaking comic book as an April Fool's joke to show that companies are willing to put way more money, effort, and resources than you think into these things.

The BattleTech guys always do fun April Fool's. One year they put out a fully functioning set of "Power Ups" for BattleTech, like video-game style power ups, for for BattleTech.
Another year they released a full RPG that combined BattleTech and Shadowrun, just 'cause they could.

Which makes it better as a joke
Makes it crueler as a joke, not better.
Cruel for some who can't get any jokes anyway, funny for normal people

I suspect that there is a fairly stark difference between interest in Squats that GW think the 40K playerbase has, and interest in Squats that the online community thinks the 40K playerbase has.
I do agree though that it is annoying and frustrating when something played as a gag is something that you actually want.

That thing you've wanted for years, we're finally going to give it to you. Ha ha, only joking, no we're not! Screw you!
I reckon we're getting something squat related and they're just using April Fools day as cover to create even more conversation.
Squats have been rumoured through leaks prior to this and the video looks far too serious and well produced to be a prank. I'm also not really feeling Space Hulk - the guy on the chair has clearly been stabbed by something capable of holding a sword, so not Tyranids. If you're not using Genestealers than you might as well call it a new Warhammer Quest game, not Space Hulk.
On the flip side, the Squat's accent is silly and his dialogue is clearly for laughs, so it might just be a prank.
I think it's legit that Squats are coming back in some form. Releasing the first teaser video on april fool's day is also the best way to ensure lots of discussion on the internet, so I'd say that's an objective accomplished.
I think there's a fair few people who might want to see squats return but if this is a joke on some level then I'm not sure why anybody would actually be upset by it. Is anybody here upset or just commenting that some imaginary squat fan might be unhappy?
Skinnereal, I like the idea of a kill team. Particularly if the environment they realise them for is a corridor fighting Hulk setting.
Wha-Mu-077 wrote: I don't think there should be any discussion wheather or not this is an April Fools' joke, given it was literally posted on the first of April.
I mean it's a April fools joke, but the joke is that it's real. We all already know squats are coming thanks to the 100% correct leak of multiple releases. The only question is whether it's just a kill team thing or something more. I think it will be Kill team for now with a full release maybe next year.
My guess squats are returning but it’s smaller like dkok killteam… an entire army line would require a much larger release and like the sisters release that is years in the making.
And I only believe it’s legit releasing because of the confirmed leaks that said squats.

Upset is maybe putting it too strongly, but I'd definitely be disappointed and it would make me think less of GW as a company. Trolling your customers by telling them something they want is going to happen, then snatching it away, isn't really funny to me. Just feels cruel really.
I didn't even collect Squats back in the day, but I've always liked fantasy dwarfs and would certainly be interested in their return to 40K.

Except even reliable rumour mongers get stuff wrong...
I mean we have had reliable rumour teller with very high rate say Angron was imminent. This when only 1 primarch had been released...
Where's that Angron?
Can you be sure that the leaker didn't see this and think it means squats are coming?
Right now I'd put money on a Killteam squad. GW seem set to use it a bit like they use Underworlds and Warcry for AoS in releasing niche themed forces that are really cool concepts, but just not enough for a full blown army; but which can slot into other forces.
It even fits with going into a derelict ship and all - heck perhaps GW is going to even more Killteam into a Space Crusade system. Random races fighting over card terrain chunks which gives huge scope for loads of random xenos and niche factions fighting over wrecked hulks - not just Tyranids and Terminators

GW's basically entire release scheudle for a year and then some forward has been leaked, and there's a bunch of potato cam pictures before pretty much every big reveal.
GW must be horrendously incompetent for those to NOT be on purpose.

There are clearly a few leaks that GW does encourage/leak themselves. However they are generally very close to official releases not a long way out; and sometimes they are just to mask those leaks that really do happen as information spreads out closer to a release and stuff ends up in more hands etc... GW is certainly not leaking massive stuff deliberately, however the difference is they now either ignore them or roll with them publicly. It's not like the Kirby days where they'd send nasty letters to news and social groups spreading leaks and go on a witch hunt.

Not really. They are a company making toys where a predominant number of their staff are fans of the toys themselves. Furthermore with much of their production in the west (UK) it stands to reason that there's a lot of levels of staff who can leak stuff reliably. They are also WAY bigger than most other wargame firms. It's not 10 people in a room making stuff and then having production done by a factory in china where a language barrier and more means leaks are unlikely. It's 100s of people - so yeah leaks can most certainly happen at multiple levels.

Hasbro routinely has not just its entire Transformers toy lines details leaked but toys are fully shown months before they are supposed to be announced. Both the Kingdom and Legacy lines had their lineups leaked, their toys shown months early, and even the street dates have been tossed out the window since stores are getting stuff seemingly months in advance. Compared to that, GW having its 40k schedule leaked is small fries.

GW also doesn't have the whole "lunchtime special" issue, either.
I will be very disappointed if this is just a joke.
I see some people going, "What? Upset over a friend who's army got squatted 30 years ago?" Well, what if it was YOUR favorite faction that happened to and they messed with YOU?
I know if they teased Harlequins, Admech, or GSC and then said, "We're not really making those models. Just a joke, mate!" to me, I'd be less than happy.

There’s a difference between holding a grudge for 30 years, and getting over it but then the company starts making a joke out of it. Don’t have to have been annoyed for 30 years to be re-annoyed by it now. (I know you were making a squat/grudge joke but still)

I highly doubt they'd (a) rerelease BFG at all (I rate it's chances somewhere around Mordheim), and if they did, (b) not in such an underwhelming way

I'm a long-term Squat fan who owns more Squats than most of you, so I don't have that much skin in this game. To me the joke, if it's just a joke, doesn't work that well since both the headline pointing out the story itself as unbelievable, and the mention of the calendar, clearly indicate that this is a joke which is kind of breaking the pretense of reality a good April fool joke is built on.
But if it is, eh, whatever. I like the design we see at the end of the video since it looks to be a fairly original looking realization of the old Squat concept that I would love to see in a non-silhouetted form.
If it's something new in the Warhammer Quest line (which stands to reason they'd want something new in the 40K universe as Blackstone Fortress did better than the AoS games) then a single Squat hero in that seems realistic.
The main thing that suggests this isn't just an April Fools day joke is the design of the squat himself. I can't really see them going through the effort of designing/updating their looks in a way that still stays in line with their original theming (the plasma weapon is clearly an updated design on the classic version they had for example) just for a joke. I'd have expected them to use some classic artwork or an old miniature photo or something along those lines rather than making an entirely reasonable trailer.
I can´t believe that 56% got fooled by GW into thinking Squats will return.
There's more than enough reasonable doubt on both sides of that at this point. Squats have already returned in Necromunda anyway so, as limited as that format is, it's not as earth shattering a change in their status as it once might have been.
I can´t believe that 56% got fooled by GW into thinking Squats will return.
There's a 100% accurate rumour dump from august last year saying squats are coming....
Then there's how squats have actually returned already. If this was a few years back and we didn't have Grendlsen and Gunnstein Miniatures, and they hadn't appeared in Psychic Awakening, then this would be a different matter and far less likely.
I can´t believe that 56% got fooled by GW into thinking Squats will return.
That's my thought too... Jesus fething wept, I can't believe how many people think this is actually heralding the return of the Squats. I am genuinely amazed.
I agree that its odd that so much effort was spent on the animation, but it could easily have been an aborted project from Warhammer+ or from elsewhere, up until the final 15 seconds, and repurposed for this.
My gut feeling is if it was a joke GW would't have left it open ended at the end of the video. Good April jokes from companies have to have a clear "This is a joke" part to them otherwise they can backfire horribly.

GW knows that the only thing that sells better than plastic crack is nostalgic plastic crack. Squats returning is a "when", not an "if".
DarkStarSabre wrote: The greatest April Fools joke would be if this was actually a legitimate reveal.
I honestly think it's a bit of both. We'll get Squat models/units, but they'll be like Corsairs and not an army.
The "reveal" shows them in some type of Space Hulk dealio, so it's not even implying an army
I really wish they would release a new edition of Space Hulk with non Space Marine expansions, including one that has rules to run a Squat salvage/extermination crew. They could even make the Squat kit cross compatible with Kill Team and Necro if they plan it right.
Let's just assume that this is actually NOT a joke. What could we infer about Squats? Looks like they have access to some kind of power armor, they have Power Fists and plasma pistols. Looks like they are keeping with a slightly modded Imperial aesthetic.

The little dude not being an overdesigned mess is perhaps the strongest argument for the squat teaser not being real

Counterpoint: A number of companies have ended up actually producing their April Fool's products because they received such a positive feedback from them.

I think you hit the nail on the head right here.
That being said I bet some kind of squat miniature will be released at some point this year. Not necessarily a full range.
Squats have never really gone away. They still existed, they just weren't an army anymore, or a force worth reckoning with.
And this doesn't give us any real clues as to what capacity they're coming "back", either. We have the Necromunda figures, so even prior to this video you've had the ability to buy a Squat pre-2022. And I suspect that, if this trailer turns out to be "real", we still aren't going to be seeing a full army, at least not yet. I would think we'll see them return either as a single character model in another WQ game and/or even a full Kill Team squad as part of an expansion focussing on hostile boarding actions.
I'd love to see squats added to IG codex like the Corsairs were added to Eldar's new book, you just need 1 HQ choice and 1 unit that can be built different ways, easy to do, and IG could use more heavy infantry, Orgyns/Bullgryns for melee, Stormtroopers/Scions for deployment/ movement, and then Squats for shooting.

Why do people still buy FIFA games?
There are some mysteries of lfie we might never know the answer to.
You know, real or fake, i'd be interested to see how they would work them in, as a complete army anyway. Would they be under imperium? Their own faction?
Honestly, i'd think it'd be neat for them to be seperate from the imperium. The supposed hive fleet destriction was simply a cover story and the squats are fine. However, a row with the mechanicus saw them excommunicated and they're now on their own, bitter against everyone. The imperium is now on the grudge list just like the Orks and the Eldar.

Correct! One measly model is honestly enough so that GW don´t need to bother releasing a WHOLE model range for 40K.

I think they look great. Probably actually pretty close to the kind of thing that GW would be doing if they were still a thing.

I would rather have a box of 10 for Necromunda then weapons options sprue and then maybe a box with 3 suits again all for Necromunda... Now that would be much better than the overpriced gak you get on 40k.

What I said still applies - the set of equipment seen here is clearly not the same as the miniatures released. They still updated another design for this. They didn't use a classic squat miniature photo, some of the retro art, or even the art for Grendlsen, all something that would have clearly shown it was a joke....instead they went out of their way to unneccesarily re-design something and give it a suitable updated look.

And neither FW model really matches the silhouette. Yes, a necromunda squat has a Mohawk, but neither have that gun or power fist or even armor

Mantic dares to offer an alternate to the Games Workshop Imperium and that will not be tolerated by the Fanboyium Legois
Honestly very excited if this turns out to not be an April Fool joke so that I can go into Mantic Threads and post GW's alternate options. I'm sure that will be tolerated by the Fanboyium Corps or whatever.
What about this one?

simply depends on how they look and the price
not like a lot of people already using GW models for Mantic games and people are ok with it because "use whatever model you like"
but it is not like in the past for April Fools people posted Mantic models with GW logos and you got some into how awesome those new factions look because "made by GW"
PS: for those who think such animation is too much afford and too well made to be an Aprils Fools joke:
I think it's just that some of us remember all the years of GW cutting every cost and pinching every penny to prop up their profits that makes it hard to believe they would spend more than few dollars on an April Fool's joke.

Jeez for an Aprils fools joke thread there's not much tolerance for some friendly banter.
Nah, I think its real- a double bluff to get folks talking and using April fools as a way to announce the Squats return. Guessing a new Killteam set in a ship like Space Hulk [or maybe a one off game like space hulk].
Some guy on FB has mentioned the title "Votunn" but I'm not sure if he has heard this or its a guess..
Loved the video [which has more likes, comments and retweets on twitter than the pinned Heresy Video].
Tannhauser42 wrote: I think it's just that some of us remember all the years of GW cutting every cost and pinching every penny to prop up their profits that makes it hard to believe they would spend more than few dollars on an April Fool's joke.
You are right.. but this is countered against Squats being.. well, squatted upon, for practically the past 30 years.
I had heard that the senior design person within GW that absolutely hated the concept of Squats has left (I can't remember his name unfortunately), which at least allowed the Necromunda miniature to be released, but that came out alongside a Beastman too and there is no indication that either one would lead to a fully fledged force.
I have come to the conclusion that this is not a joke, in that this is a tease and take away.
This is definitely a joke that is based purely on the premise that one should be wary on a day like today.
And really, what better day to reintroduce the squats? its perfect i say, and even though i dont play 40k, i say bring em so my inner 17 year old rogue trader era self can revel in them again. i will buy them if they come.
we got plastic genestealer cults... and plastic sisters of battle. clearly anything is possible now.
Well that middle picture of Mantic FF looks really cool. With the servo harness type thing. That looks really detailed.
The tank makes a good Plague Burst Crawler if you spin it round, it has the right profile. Just with a little conversion. I’m working on doing that now.
Well I guess they could repurpose the KO from AOS for some of the models. I didn't like their look in fantasy, but it might work in 40K....if they got rid of the balloons.
Making an April Fools' Day joke turn out to actually be real would be a great prank, but after looking at this thread it's clear the confusion of just understanding how April Fools' Day jokes work means it's probably a bad idea to try it.
Votann is text in the link to the video- Killteam Votann then in shipboard action? I think some of the details from the video might feature as scenery like the bulkhead doors and maybe even the dead ships captian in his chair.
Cruel for some who can't get any jokes anyway, funny for normal people
Kind of worrying that this poster believes cruel humour is "normal" - while I lean towards this probably being an April Fool, I do agree with those who think it was done in poor taste, or is a sign of poor judgement on GW's part.
Although what can be said for sure - this is generating a massive amount of coverage on social media and is going a lot for advertising/marketing (I suppose if you believe there is no such thing as bad publicity).
I bet it is both true and false. True, because there will be Squats but false, because there will be no wh40k army of them. Probably some boardgame or Kill-team at best.

I really don't get that sort of April Fools day joke of just a "Here's something you actually want presented in a totally reasonable way, too bad you aren't getting it because look at the date!" where it isn't funny in itself or something so absurd that it's showing someone to be gullible/a fool. The joke shouldn't just be down to what the date is.
How is this "cruel"? Nobody is losing anything. Oh, yes, I also lost my precious Squats back in the 90s too, but I've lived a fair bit of life since then, so the wound isn't exactly what you might call... "fresh".
Judging from some of the responses to this video I'm half expecting to read a headline sometime next week about a murderous rampage that was carried out by somebody who had reacted poorly to an animated video about a science fiction dwarf that didn't exist.
I have a free brand new still sealed copy of Shadow of Ruin battle box set I am going to give away, and I agree with what you said people needing to put on their big daddy pants because a joke is never cruel, so Im just gonna give it to you.
Just be sure to PM me an address where you'd like this big box of stuff sent to.
I don't think it's "cruel," but it is in questionable taste for a company that's done such a good job of wrecking its primary game over the last year. It feels like the sort of humor that works when everyone likes you, but that falls flat when you're in the doghouse.
The real ballsy end to the animation would be having a Harlequin Voidweaver pop up at the end and vaporize the whole space hulk, Squats and all, in one shot.
I’m going potty trying to settle on whether or not this is a wind up.
Why it may be genuine 1. They teased the video yesterday
2. The rumours mentioned Squats and that source hasn’t been wrong yet
3. It does seem to match rumour engines
4. The wording of the article doesn’t strike me as nudge nudge wink wink
5. An animated trailer seems a lot of effort for a prank
6. What a way to get eyes on and people hype.
Why it may be an April Fools 1. It’s April Fools Day
2. They’ve made light of the Squat Clock in the past.
3. The animated trailer could be for another project, with just the last frames being added in for laffs
4. The post went up at an odd time, even allowing for the U.K.’s clocks changing last weekend. It went up at 11am, but we normally get the day’s first post at 12pm. Also, traditionally April Fools ends at 12pm.
Gah. Hopefully we get a 6pm “only kidding” or a further tease, like even a single honest to goodness model.
#7: There is no better day to announce the return of the sqauts than april fools, since their entire status is now a verb for being disowned and forgotten ("squatted"), so it makes more sense to announce on this day than it would any other.
If it is real, I for one can’t wait to read their new background.
They really didn’t get a lot of love in Rogue Trader and Epic (but what was there was solid), so new stuff is going to be welcome, especially as it will need to explain where they’ve been.

Im sure the background authors will write all of that off with hackneyed "we were here the entire time, you just had to look down longshanks!!" types of approach. You know, as they did in the video.
[edit] Though I do agree that I am actually more excited about how they are going to handle it, than if they are going to handle it. Squats are coming. Now its just time to break out the popcorn and judge the background authors as is our god given right as know it alls on the internet.

Me too! There was so little written about them around Rogue trader, where they've been and how/why they returned are very interesting.
It also says “momentous tidings from the warp” . The video on YouTube’s thumbnail says “life signs detected”, which isn’t otherwise referenced in the video.

Though squat with a robot leg is possible. And the perfect leg to use for a Rumour Engine. As it’s hard to say what it is.

Just out of curiosity, where did you see that? I don't see any link text that says Votann.
Quick search online and found an obscure reference (in a saga about the Orkneys) to it being a form of the Old Norse word vátr (adj. wet). I could definitely see it being a GW-ification (ie a made up name) reminiscent of Wotan -> Woden -> Odin.

But the article says "Tell us what you think you’ve just seen over on Facebook and Twitter right now, don’t even stop to check your calendar."
Thinking about it, I believe the don't check your calendar is in reference to the line "After a short absence". Meaning they don't want you to remember the last 30 years of them being relegated to the warp.
Perhaps Chaos breaking free from the eye of Terror and the storm that has rent the galaxy in half opened up a way for the Squats to get out again. Between the way time stands still in the warp an how long a Squat lives (Guessing as long as a dwarf), would the Squats really notice that anything has changed in the galaxy? Big marines have gotten bigger, Chaos still angsty, Eldar still a dying race, Orks still like to fight and the nuns still smell the same from their height .
This is pretty clever April Fools because regardless of the outcome it will have us fooled in one way or other. If Squats are indeed coming then April 1st would be the perfect time to announce them because we would assume that it's fake and thus be fooled.

A kill team would make an excellent beginning though. Help gauge interest and do some engineering practice on modelling squat aesthetics on a sprue.
I feel thats what the SOB plastics were before their individual releases. Lots of stuff thrown together on singular sprues bu not quite legal for most things (but that SOB kit was actually pretty good for KT 18 teams, for the most part)

I think a Codex at this point in time is too much to ask for. They usually will test the waters for non-Imperial armies with one unit first. Like how Harlequins were an Eldar unit when they got new metal models. Then they made the plastics, saw the demand, and then semi-fleshed out the line for a Codex.
Also, weren't the plastic GSC hybrids just in that Deathwatch game before getting an actual Codex? Or was that roughly the same time? I remember getting the Deathwatch guys before getting the Acolyte & Neophyte boxes. But since I was fleshing out my years-old GSC counts-as IG army at the time, I didn't get the Codex.
This is just my theory. I think if they go a KT or similae route and see a demand, a Codex will come.
Well if its a bad joke - someone will have to go on stage and slap the feth out of them.
I look forward to seeing what they do - they have brought back Squats for Necromunda and this seems a obvious continuation of this.
To be honest I would rather new (or revived races and factions) than crowbaring in new units to them - looking at rubbish like the Centurions, Dreadknights, Sisters Paragons, Tau Stormsurge are just not....good (IMO)

Hey I get that, it makes a lot of sense. I just feel like I've seen a lot of folks dismissing Squats because they feel they're too silly or some other such nonsense, when we're talking about a fiction universe with space orks, space elves and 10 foot tall human warriors.

yeah I wasn't sure about that one, I'm guessing that was a 90s thing? I'd not ever heard of Exodites until like 2020. I was really confused about the new animation called the Exodite too, was expecting Eldar, got Tau.

Unfortunately, Jervis and company did Squats a bad turn when they squatted them. They gave an official reason why: they thought the lore was dumb, and couldn't think of anything more interesting at the time. So they discontinued them. It wasn't sales, just a lack of ideas internally. And, over time, that lack of inspiration has translated into the idea that GW was justified in getting rid of them and shouldn't ever bring them back. And instead should do <insert random idea here>.

I mean, feeling like you can't make a product good is a much better reason to discontinue it than most...

Exodites were the original lore reason for knights in Epic. The Eldar knights were Exodite war machines based on the machines they used to herd their dinosaurs, and fight off invaders. Human colonists ended up settling nearby, and copied the basic idea. AFAIK, the knights were the only Exodites to appear in Epic.
There were completed Epic Eldar Exodites riding dinosaurs ready for release but they were never released. You can still search and find pre-release pictures of them.
So anyway...I see the Squat trailer. Is GW not going to do any April Fools release then?
I think it's real, but there will be no mention anywhere of Squats. This might be the Crew of the Mjolner, and they may be Dwardin of the Core Leagues, but Squats? Maybe a derogatory terms in the small fluff bit in the IG book.

I would not object to a rebranding in name. AOS Kharadron Overlords already shows how the old Dwarf/Squat aesthetic might be done.
I'm all in for Mjolner's Shipbreakers, with a bunch of retcons that more or less sticks to the basics we know (including the fight against Tyranids) and has the survivors of the leagues now nomadic spacers rather than underground miners. Aliens powerlifters meets Alien Resurrections oddball crew for the Kill Team. Living ancestor in his old exoarmour perhaps.
Just as long as we still get the Demiurg for T'au...
The only thing keeping me thinking this is definitely an April Fool's Joke is the reference to "don't even check your calendar." Other than that, a rather expensive looking April Fools Joke.
And I can totally see them come back in a Kill Team format...at least for GW to judge interest.

I wouldn't mind if they were even rebranded as Demiurg. They were only mercenaries with the Tau, so they could still be their own independent faction if expanded.
There was a hint in one of the recent supplements about their return despite supposedly thought extinct.
I could see the following working to spread them round the galaxy in order to have battles:
Nomadic mercenary survivors living off their stronghold spaceships bearing a grudge against the Imperium for abandoning them in their hour of need when their homeworlds were attacked by the Tyranids. A few mining enclaves mostly on newly settled hidden inhospitable worlds. The mercenaries fighting other races to get resources directly or as mercenary payment to funnel back to their worlds, which are turned into fortresses.

There is a Squat bounty hunter in game or am I mistaken? Anyway, that gang would be a very cool addition.
There's two of them so far - ammo jack and the hired gun. Squat Biker Gang in the wastes please!
Two models, and the Venator (Bounty Hunter) list just happens to let you take an entire crew of people who just happen to have Move 3, Strength 3, Toughness 4, lower initiative, and good Intelligence rolls.
Then you hop over to Hardcore Minis and buy all the incredibly cool Space Dwarf models you want!
I've already ran a Necromunda Squat Brotherhood as Venators, and despite my pokey movement, a gang with bolters on the basic gangers can be nasty.
Even if it is total bollocks, it got a lot of people talking and more importantly the animation is rad as hell. I love the look of the captain impaled on his sword and the lighting. Extremely cool.
You know someone further up the thread said maybe the squat bit was just tacked onto some other animation. And it sort of did look a bit like that. Hopefully the first bit of animation is for something cool.
I guess we have to wait until later today to find out if it was real..

Looks like a faction icon like the other 40k factions have. If it was a joke there would have been more of a nod and wink with the artwork- they would have used old designs. New squat design and a modern faction icon to sit with the rest of the 40k range, backed up by their mention in the 100% rumour list from last year. They are coming, probably as a killteam first.
I reckon we will see more next week.

the tyranids eating them was just an offhand comment, this is the quote:
"Would you believe they were all eaten by the Tyranid invasion? Or, due to the Squats biker life style, everyone of them was arrested for disturbing the peace and sacrificed to the Emperor. Where do you think they get all of those souls anyway? All kidding aside, it doesn't seem likely the Squats will ever again see the light of day. When they were out they never seemed very popular, showed up at our stores, or tournaments, and didn't sell on top of all that. Their look was really outdated compared to the hundreds of other great Warhammer 40,000 models. Don't send us hate mail, it's just the cold hard facts of the 41st Millennium."

Unless it has been written into the canon further?
