Welcome all to the 92nd round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.
This month, we rivisit the annual Halloween round, which gives entrants a nice wide pool of options and interpretations. Whether it's trick-or-treating orcs convincingly disguised as Space Marines, or true eldritch horrors set to warp the mind and haunt the nightmares of all who see them, all your entry has to do is evoke the spooky season in some way. It can be funny, horrific, maybe even both!
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of October and will end at midnight GMT on 31st October. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

With apologies to The Bard:
When shall we three meet again? In thunder, lightning, or in rain?
When the hurly-burly’s done, When the battle’s lost and won.
That will be ere the set of sun.
Where the place?
Upon the heath.
There to meet with Macragge.
Maiden, Matron, Crone. The 3 witches. Fates. Furies. We see them all the time in stories, even beyond the bounds of the galaxy. I give to you, three sisters:

Not a difficult category for a chaos army, but I've had these gals sitting in primer for a couple of weeks waiting for horror month:
Got them off etsy, they're meant to be dark elves or something, but I've decided they're chaos cultists, specifically the insane Edenborn, the offspring of the denizens of Daemonworld Eden, because I figure if you get enough Slaaneshi followers on one planet some of them are going to wind up mating in the boring old biologically-plausible fashion, if only by accident because they're too high to realise they're not doing something more horrific to each other. Hopefully once I've slapped some contrast paint on them they'll be something other than pale silhouettes.

I've had last year's Warhammer Day model on my desk for almost a year, but never felt like painting it. Let's try to change that this month.

Let’s think CB, you got any unpainted wraithguard? They’re kinda ghosty. Got any witch-hunting ghost-busting SoB’s? Got anything necromunda zombie related? Any horror movie gribblies or unlikely cross-overs? Paint up a spare Eldar guardian in a scream mask? Freddy Krueger inquisitor?

Or Dark Reapers?
I've got another wraithlord conversion that's based on the Dark Reapers, so I'll probably end up doing that.

Wasn't sure what to do this month. There's so many great options and I remembered I had a gift malifaux Box set called witches and woes bad harvest.. I'm never going to paint it for any other reason so here's my excuse to get it out of the back log.
It's unfortunately made of restic so the clean up isn't perfect. They're going to be part of my Kings of war nightstalkers warband so they got square bases. I don't know how many I'll get painted and I'm really not a fan of the pin up Pandora but that's my pledge for this month.

Thanks guys, very pleased with how he’s come out. Fairly simple method, base of Stegadon Scale green, followed by a heavy dry brush of Kabalite green and then a lighter dry brush / highlight with bone tinted with a tiny bit of the Kabalite (just to knock out the yellow).

Blade and... who's the chap on the left? Looking forward to both, whoever it is! Vampire hunters are cool as.
I'm still not sure what I'm going to paint this month. I have a choice between my Dark Reaper wraithlord conversion, skeletons from the 1995 Warhammer Quest expansion Catacombs of Terror... or if I'm really pushed for time, just some bats and spiders from the original Warhammer Quest box. I'm worried I might end up being forced into the last option if I continue to have limited hobby time. I want to get something done, though... :/

Ok, so, spooky gak! I'm not saying they're my final five but ...
They don't come much spookier than the Black Flame. Whilst black 🔥 is obviously... Challenging, I'm pretty happy with the results.
Hopefully, the electric blue pops enough.
Continuing with our demonic overlords, Lord Balam, in all his glory.
It's a cool sculpt, I just wish he were bigger...
I feel like he should've been 40mm + base size, like the giant monsters, more Kriegaffe sized (with whom he shares an almost identical pose).
Gruagach, the twisted daoine sidhe
I was lucky enough to have a bit of input on this fig in game.
I'm eternally grateful that they based the sculpt on my favourite panel from the comic.
And Nimuë, Queen of Blood.
Damn, what a sculpt. I wasn't initially sure but I loved painting her. The hair colour was a bit out of left field, but I've tried to lean into a bit into Mignola aesthetic, and it's how he highlights her hair, so who am I to argue?
Aiming to replicate the colours on her dragon form...
Yeah.
I'm down with that.
The wing membranes stressed me out.
Side by side
And, all together.
More Hellboy to follow. Got a monster groove going on

Yup, it's a hybrid resin/metal model.
I decided that the stumpy little legs looked dumb, so I sculpted some extra tentacles to take their place:
"Sculpted" is a strong word, as I really just rolled some Kneadatite tubes and then smushed them in place. I'll have to add a flying base since the thing is no longer ambulatory.

You would know best, of course, but seeing that picture I figured it was supposed to stand on and move with the lower tentacles. I never even thought to questioned that.

I liked the legs. It gave it personality. Reminded me of the flood infection form. Seeing that thing come waddling at you like a power rangers villain would be horrifying. It's mouths gnashing as it's stumbles at you whipping and lashing out around it.

Hi there,
My entry for this month:
The spider girl will take part. For the succubus I am not sure.

I gave it a good wash in soapy water with a brush, but still not going well.
So we will see.

@SirOllox: Are those figures from Super Dungeon Explore or something? The chibi look makes me think of that. I really like them and look forward to seeing them painted!
And as for my entry for this month, I'm phoning it in a bit and doing up some Dead of Dunharrow from Middle-Earth:
These will be super simple to get looking spooky; basically just a contrast layer with some drybrushes on top. Plus basing, which again won't be hard.
Edit: I suppose I should clarify, the guy who's already got some color on him will not be part of the entry; he's the one I used as a test model a while back. I'll pick five from among the others and submit those as my entry.

More Hellboy nonsense: Crickets!
Nasty jumpy wee horde mutants. Horrid things
Varvara. Yes, scary evil girl demon.
Fun to do, though many, many layers.
Hammerhead. He's a really nasty big bad, with a great classic mythos vibe. Not the formless, nameless kind, but rather the ancient, unknowable monster.
And the Wendigo!
He is actually an infected agent, so has great mechanics in game - you really don't want to kill him, despite the fact he'll try to rip you apart and eat you. Jolly nice.
And a quick group shot.
All in all, satisfactory progress.

The succubus is directly a miniature for super dungeon explore.
For the spider girl I am not quiet sure for what game it is, I bought it for reduced price at the FLGS, but it is from the same company and it has rule cards for super dungeon explore, too.... so yes 😁

Okay, I'm not feeling my original submission (again). I'm withdrawing the Knight vs Zombie in favor of some Japanese Gaki (aka Hungry Ghosts):
I'm having an Asian horror-themed Oubliette solo mission playtest around Halloween and I needed some more monsters. Gaki are basically Japanese ghouls with distended bellies. These slightly converted Plaguebearers fit the bill pretty well!
I finished two really awesome ghosts (an Onryo and Ochimusha) earlier this week but I can't enter those because I never took "before" pictures
I might enter another model or two to make the submission a full 5

Finished - the Edenborn, Slaaneshi cultist offspring (behind a spoiler, cuz they've got their tops off):
Pretty messy paint job I'll admit, but they're tiny little things, they live in the wilderness without adequate shower facilities, and I'm not a very good painter; still, I think they're okay from regular tabletop viewing distance; I do think the hair turned out not bad, so far as my usual efforts with white go. These are the children of the Bringers of Wonder's cultists, born insane and raised by lesser daemons because they're the only things that can get near them until they're old enough to control their homicidal tendencies; they wind up believing they're daemons themselves, and pre-battle they cut themselves open to 'purify' themselves of their human vital organs - which surprisingly works (sometimes), letting them charge into the fray sustained by the power of Slaanesh alone. Of course they're still just unarmoured humans so even autoguns mow them down in droves, never mind boltgun fire, but they're living their best lives (up to that point), and that's what's really important, or something along those lines. Happy Halloween.

Loads of really cool stuff going on!
More Hellboy, entirely unexpected I'm sure
The Crooked Man. Very challenging to paint as he is a figure entirely in drawn and inked in black in the comics.
I actually used a lot of khaki and tan to try to achieve the shading.
Demonic Servants
And Demonic Underlings
These might replace imps as my new least-favourite enemy
And Ogdru-hem mutants, which I'm rather pleased with.
These guys remind me of something out of a Bosch painting so I tried a different strategy with the highlights.
I also approached the flesh in a very different way, using Vallejo dark fleshtone as a starting point. Definitely something I'm going to think about for character models in future.
So I'm surprisingly on track with painting the Big Box of Doom in a month. I've got the Queen's Champion left from the enemies and then it's onto the heroes! There's also Drinking with Skeletons, the display piece, to tackle, but that's a big beast. Still - end in sight, and then I have to pick out 5!

All my old nids are from second hand lots. I kinda wanted to play them back in the day, but there was no way I was going to start a 3rd army that was horde based.
I do have another, unbuilt, original tyrant. Unfortunately, no spare lash whip. Looking at the parts, a plastic one from the warrior kit is roughly the same size. I can get you detailed measurements if you want.

The problem with eldritch monsters from beyond the void is that they are notoriously difficult to photograph when we mortals are restricted to 3 dimensions. I have the same problem with my cat.
I like the first and the last of the pics. The middle one has a pair of mouths lined up neat and tidy. Symmetry and order does not suit the mini.
I’m always hesitant to give advice on already cool models. It looks great without the slime/pus. If you do add wetness to the mini, I feel you would also have to add some to the teeth/gums.

Ok. Decision made: Drinking with Skeletons diorama. This was an opportunity to play about with washes and shadows, which was very enjoyable. Figuring out the light and shadow, especially on Big Red, was particularly challenging. But... Time for a rant. Why. Why in the name of all things sacred would you put a mold line down the face of a model, never mind a RESIN PROMO?! Really shoddy work there Mantic. Had to rebuild Hellboy's nose with gs as well as other facial details. I'm usually a big mantic fanboy but this was very poor. I am sick of resin; I really, really hate working with it. It's brittle, temperamental and in this day and age I'll take plastic or even metal. Life's too short. It's even holding me back from printing right now: I've just made a classic Captain America 🛡️ from plasticard despite having a decent STL. Nevertheless, rather proud of it. I'll whittle down to 5 pics anon.

It was an add-on for the most recent KS. It'll come back around for availability, though, as their resin promos are want to do. I still haven't got the Santa Hellboy promo but he'll likely come out again for Xmas (they tend to bring them back out around Black Friday). They've also got an ultra-hi-res resin printer in studio now; when I (somehow) lost my Johann suit promo, they just printed me a new one and sent me it.

This was a fun little project, and one I was looking forward to doing since the moment I got the middle tyrant. (I already had, and still have to build, spare 2nd and modern tyrants) But I loved the idea of doing a triumvirate of maiden, matron, crone of Hive Tyrants from across the editions.
Old old one has plenty of nostalgic charm. Classic look, good sculpt. The middle one is from a dark time. Did not age well. The “modern” kit, while dating from 4th, is a solid kit and holds up well. All were painted with my basic nid scheme, which is fairly simple, but gets decent table-top results for the effort it takes.

Lovejoy wrote:I'm running waaay behind this month... we're over halfway through and I haven't had time to pick up a paintbrush yet. I'm sticking with the two minis I posted as sprues back on page 1. Finally got them built though! No time for conversions beyond a bit of minor kitbashing.
Now I just have to try and get them painted in time...
Could you tell me what model that is please? The werewolf is great.
I've finished painting one of the models but need to photograph it. Ended up losing one of my dogs this month and I've barely been on the planet let alone at the painting desk. I slapped some paint on it to get it done. They're a bit awkward models to paint due to so many roots and soft plastic making everything a bit floppy.
Is next month themed or do we vote?

Yep, it's a Vargskyr. It's from GW's Cursed City boxed game, which is about £125. But you can pick them up individually on Ebay pretty easily!

I'll put up a theme vote for next month soon, as mooted back in September I think it'd be cool to do a run-off poll with a few subjects that didn't quite make the cut in this year's votes so far. So if anyone has any particular favourites they'd like to see get a second chance, now's the time to give them a shout out for reconsideration!

(Red topics already competitions)
Interestingly 2 topics already made it on their second chance. I’m not going to sift through all the posts looking for ideas that didn’t make it into the polls, so don’t feel compelled to restrict your suggestions to just these. But it should make a good start for bouncing ideas around.

Looks like of those the most popular ones that didn't end up making it were Playing Tricks, Lead From The Front, In It For The Money, and Snazzy. Why not just have a run-off of those four for November?
If we decide not to do that, I might suggest a topic: Girls just want to have fun! (can you tell I've got a few more Sisters I need to paint )

Heh heh. When you first posted your proof pics, I was like, “Space marines? For Halloween?” Then I noticed that they were carrying entire skeletons around!

Kinda makes me want to paint my guys as LotD. The’ve got the bones and spooky stuff going on for it. Why not paint them as Halloween marines?

I think that's fair, so unless anyone wants to lobby particularly strongly for one of the others, I'll put a poll up for these four within the next couple of days. Cheers to Nev for sorting that list, made things much simpler!

"The way is shut. It was made by those who are dead, and the dead keep it."
Got my entry done in decent time. Here are my final pics of some Warriors of the Dead of Dunharrow:
Definitely phoned it in a bit with this entry, but I'm happy with how they look. They really are easy models to get looking somewhat like they do in the movies; just a decent coat of green (I used Hexwraith Flame), with a couple of drybrushes over the top.
Lots of other suitably spooky entries coming in, and plenty of time for more. Looking forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with.

Anyone else find if ironic that JoshinJapan is painting Lovecraft monsters and I, KidCthulhu, am painting Japanese folk critters?
Don't mind me; that just popped into me head.

Tis the season for brain transplants. Next step is to tighten those neck bolts and go on a good old fashioned rampage.

I suppose we must have met after being taken by Yithians, allowing us to influence each other's preferences without being consciously aware of doing so. It's the most logical explanation.

I got it done quicker than I expected. My World Eaters Master of Executions all Halloweenie like.
This is why I like entering online competitions; it lights a fire under you and gives you focus. That is a nice change of pace from just looking at the mountain of miniatures I need to work on and sobbing. Loudly.

I couldn’t roll out the big guns last month thanks to the blessings of Grandfather Nurgle, but I’m going to see if I can give this chibi mecha a spooky makeーover before we reach All Hallows’ Eve.

Might I have another 12 hours or so? I’m waiting for some paint to dry before I can do the final assembly, and the time difference means I need to sleep now.

Yeah para normally allows a days grace to account for different timezones and taking pics.

From the depths of Gundam lore comes the menacing Dokoro Zaku.
This is an official figure of it, with my (rather less menacing) version for comparison.
All my entry pics in the spoiler below.
