Bonjour fellow Sons of Mankind. What are you currently working on?

Me? Well, since you asked. Just got these in the post day before yesterday. I'm still recovering from Grandfather's blessings, but once I feel up to it I'll start assembly. I was lucky enough to find ten MK3 bodies for my Gray Slayers thankfully, but those kits are about as rare as hens teeth! Hope Russ isn't too much a pain to put together, he looks like a lot of parts...

I've got a HH event next weekend so I finished off a unit of Tacticals and a Volkite Heavy Support squad as well.
With my army done I've also taken on my friends unpainted units so I'll be doing some Thousand Sons tanks and infantry for them as well.

Blackfang, any chance you could spoiler those images please? They're playing merry-hob with my screen resizing.

Nice to see what people are working on.
I am putting the finishing touches on some cataphractii. A squad of combi-melta/plasma with power/chain fists. A squad of volkite/power axes and a squad of twin claws for maximum rip and tear.
Also have 2 contemptors and a spartan on the back burner.

My most recent escapades have been magnetizing all the special and heavy weapons for two support squads

Spoiler:

I also really hate the glorified segway look of the Legionary rapier so I used the Solar Auxilia one as a base for something more like a fully remote controlled unit.

Still waiting on the Assault kits, UM MKVI heads and the Whirlwind Scorpius.. and for rumours of possible Land Speeder Proteus kit remake. Got a 30th Anniversary FW resin Speeder mostly built, but if a resculpt is happening in the next year or two, it's getting scrapped, as it will look out of scale with the old MKVI leg proportions. Also thinking about how to best magnetize my Indomitus terminator left shoulderpads, so as to be able to switch between a 40K look (Crux Terminatus ON) & a 30K look (Crux Terminatus OFF).

Ah, almost forgot, also waiting for news on the Plastic Mechanicum Automata rumours! Really craving for a decent maniple to support my beakies with, and I reckon if they ever get released in plastic, they'll end up hella cheaper than the resin ones.

I'm a painfully slow army builder.. I'm still in the phase where I'm gathering kits, bits, blu tacing infantry trying out bits/poses, partial assemblies of vehicles etc, researching on colourschemes and weathering techniques.. will take me years to finish my IXth.. but I have the rest of my life to finish them so no stress (yet) hehehe!

I dont mind playing with unpainted, blutaced minis so it doesn't matter anyway.. These kits cost too damn much for me to do a lazy job with them, I'd rather play with sticks and stones than ruin my pieces. Everyone I play with is cool with playing against WIP stuff

also whilest not as impressive, i decided to finish my AL army by this slew of purchases, just before the other pricehike and for themathic reasons.

Spoiler:

Which puts me at close to a mechanised company. (32 normal marines, 20 Special weapon marines, 10 Cataphractii of which one is a consul, 10 tartarosi, 1 praetor 3 more consuls, 10 scouts and 5 headhunters, 3 rhinos, Spartan, 2 proteusi and 2 predators.)

Also technically i would've been prepared since 2 months now for my Milita army but GW seems to not want to upload the miltia PDF...

Nice! Just a bit of advice on those predators, they're an awesome kit and also pretty friendly for magnetising so defo mag all those guns! However when you're building the chassis, trim and sand down the tabs on the base plate slightly. And cut down the peg on the back doors by like 1mm either side. Both are slightly too long/too large to fit where they need to be.

Other than that's it's a lovely kit to build!

Also mine are all white scars. Should be done tonight so might post a pic

Brings me to about 10000 points of painted white scars I think šŸ˜¬

have you also magnetised the sponson guns?
If so how?

Personally i only really need to magnetise the grav, predator and volkite turret weapons, since i absolutely love volkite weapons and have more than enough lascannon carrying transports personally, but if you can tell me an easy way to do the sponsons then i will do them.

4-5K worth of painted Chaos/Black Legion Infantry, of course!
Spoiler:

I have lots of Chaos dudes but not a lot of armor. When the Spartans hit a mere $60 US on the second hand market I picked up four to remedy the lack of tanks. And one can never have too many Lascannons anyways.

So personally for the sponsons I have cheated a little bit because I have a 3d printer. However. Best way to go would be to cut off the little pegs on the targeter and the round baseplate/wire thing that goes under the gun, then slot a magnet in the hole on each side and a magnet in the top and bottom of the weapon.

easiest and laziest way (which I did in with my resin predators and kratos before I got the printer) is to not glued the weapons and just dry fit the pegs on the targeting and wire bit. They're snug enough that they fit without glue and then you can pull them out to change. Weapons.

Now though I'm just cheating and have printed extra sponsons incase I. Need them

Made big progress with two whirlwinds; am chuffed.

Spoiler:

Can't decide on which legion to paint the other two - part of me wants to make do world eaters and death guard again so i have them as two pairs when i want to play small elements of those legions on Isstvan 3.

I'm torn because they are also Ordo Reductor Artillery Tanks and i like the idea of having the other two as ultramarine and dark angel paint because my guys go around confiscating them for use as a direct-fire front line unit

I like the thematic element that WE war doctrine would say they would fire the missiles till out of ammo and then abandon the vehicle which my guys then find.
Calleb Decima has a bit of fluff about finding loyalist DG so again, nicely thematic for my guys to find them in the storms on Isstvan 3 and team up.

HOWEVER
The old skool ultramarine livery off the orignal box is just so classic, not just on the front of the box, but also in the battle report titled 'HERETIC!' in white dwarf issue 187.

What do?

Been a busy buildy boy this week.

To date, Iā€™ve builtā€¦.

Two twenty strong Tactical Squads. One with Bayonets, the other with Chain Bayonets

One ten strong Autocannon Support unit (read your instructions. Two slightly different sculpts of said Autocannon!)

One ten strong Missile Launcher Squad

Two Deimos Rhinos (with Multi-Meltas, because of course you would)

One Predator, all Volkite because choooooompewzapfryded

Two Contemptors (Lascannon/Fist, Volkite/Autocannon

One Leviathan (dual Siege Claws)

One Spartan

Two Praetors, as they come from the big box.

One Kratos (all Volkite. I bloody love Volkite)

Still to go?

40 more MkVI. Got a decent selection of weapons to arm them with. Almost certainly doing two units of 10 with Volkite Culverin and Lascannons. I may do a third Tactical Squad, but also have a set of Special Weapons, so Iā€™ll see where the mood takes me.

1 more Contemptor. Again havenā€™t decided what to arm it with.

1 set of ranged weapons for the Leviathan.

1 more Spartan

20 Cataphractii

3 Support Predators

1 more Rhino.

Absolutely loving the kits. Iā€™d run out of Citadel Plastic Glue, so a friend donated Tamiya stuff. Iā€™m concerted. That brush is ideal for fiddly bits, and near ideal for the two part pads on MkVI.

Tomorrow I think Iā€™ll get the Predators built. May include one Neutron Cannon thing.

As someone who also moved this year? Keep All Your Kits And Tools And Glues And Gubbins Together!

Single box. Trust me. Itā€™ll save you spending ā€œfunā€ hours playing ā€œWhere the bloody hell did I put that?ā€. And finish anything you started building, because I can absolutely guarantee the Stuff Goblins will spirit away an essential, irreplaceable part. Mostly out of spite.

Of particular satisfaction here is that without breaking the bank (everything bought at a significant, legal, discount) Iā€™ve wound up with a pretty decent choice in how to run my army.

With a second Spartan awaiting construction, I can run a fully mechanised force. Or, I can do Iron Wing, filling compulsory Troops each with a brace of Predators, fleshing out with the Spartans and Kratos.

Still unsure if I want to keep the 20 Cataphractii though.

Nice to have a full talon, to have a full talon? Nice.

Tempted to double up the Dreadnought pool with a view to a possible Fury of the Ancients list. I hear Dreadnoughts struggle a bit in 2nd Ed, but they look cool and thatā€™s the main thing! Also it means I donā€™t feel like a power gaming dick for playing lots and lots and lots and lots of Dreadnoughts, now theyā€™re vulnerable to Bolter fire.

That's quite the armoured force you're amassing. Wasn't a massive fan of the Kratos at first, but the more I see them built but unpainted, the more I find myself liking them.

Where did you hear that load of bollocks!? Dreadnoughts are the premier unit in Heresy at the moment. They're undercosted, and plenty shooty/stabby and thanks to being turned into MC's, quite hard to put down by conventional anti-armour means. They certainly aren't vulnerable to bolters!
You want to have a word with whoever fed you that tosh.

Despite being in full pack mode, I manged to get a sneaky bit of hobby time in yesterday. Started converting the AoD axe praetor into my version of Farith Redloss. Removed all the fancy chest bits and did a little bit of greenstuffing. That'll be the last of it though for at least a week until I get my new hobby room set up.

Gonna have to call phooey on that too.
I don't have the Mechanicum or Imperium book, so I can't speak for the units contained therein, but of the standard astartes units only Preators and Centurions have a higher Initiative than 4. Every Character I could see had an Initiative of 5 and only two (Lucius & Sevetar) had 6. Out of the Legion specific units, only the Enigmatus Cabal of the 1st and Mhara Gal, Gal Vorbak and Blade Slaves of the 17th had an Initiative of 5.
The only astartes units who have an Initiative of 6 or higher (barring Lucius & Sev) are the Primarchs. But those are a whole different ball game.

Rend as a special rule for melee is far from common, being limited to Power/Force Swords, Lightning Claws (All of which are 6+) and a smattering of Legion specific gear.

Murderous Strike is rarer again. Only 2 standard melee weapons have it, Paragon Blades and the contemptors own chainfist, plus again, a hand full of Legion specific gear. As far as I know (I'm not as well versed with the traitor units wargear) the only squad in the game that can have unit wide Murderous Strike weapons are the 1st Legions Knights Cenobium.

There just aren't a lot of units who can readily go toe to toe with a melee equipped contemptor without being super expensive (lightning claw vets), only having a minimum of guys (terminators) or a character who needs protecting by a unit (normally one of the aforementioned).
And i've yet to see anyone say that playing against Fury of the Ancients was an afternoon well spent.

EDIT- Sorry Doc, I just reread this and realised I come off sounding a bit aggressive. I didn't intend to sound like I was jumping down your throat there. Just trying to convey that there's not a lot of high I, damage + melee units getting around.

Mostly focussing on anything distinctively Heresy.

Dreads are just the guns I liked the look of. But I did magnetise the Leviathan, who has two Siege Claws not pictured.

Hi guys,
So having two weeks of vacation, I'm back to the game.
So it's time to finish this assault squad and start a real 2nd edition unit: a tactical support squad with rotor cannons
And, at long last, a special project for my heart: captain Sault Tarvitz !
So those are my projects for the next two weeks

Iā€™ve had that old ā€˜Battlescapeā€™ kit for years, waiting to find a use for it. So when I messed up my first Predator (wrong weapons), I decided it would become a battlefield wreck. The statue is from the Warhammer ā€˜Garden of Morā€™ kit. I am also modifying the mausoleum models from that kit into Heresy terrain.

Think Iā€™m gonna order 4 Contemptors as this monthā€™s addition to my growing force. Because I bloody love Dreadnoughts, and want to be able to run Fury of the Ancients once in a while.

Got to say, Iā€™m quite impressed with the Rites of War as a thing. Whilst Iā€™m far from familiar with all of them, and Iā€™m not gonna claim theyā€™re necessarily well balanced, theyā€™re decent ways to flavour your force, as they usually come with a limitation.

That is the type of FW rules we got during 6/7th, if you ever get the chance take a look at the rules for R&H in IA 13 or the Eldar-Corsairs.

That said, the rites i find comparativ bit all over the shop in regards to quality

Anyways i got myself the Liber Imperium and Mechanicum, and especially the SA have some really interesting bits and bobs in their "rite" equivalent. Now if the list would be a bit more expansive then it would be a perfect from me.
But since i had the start of a Nurgle themed trench warfare force going anyways, time to build a force then.

You won't have many friends left after you plonk them down on the table...

Went in for a Leviathan. Came out with a Sicaran.

The Sicaran is one of the models that convinced me to jump into WH30k. I have 2 of them waiting for my Ultramarines, although I bet by the time I'm ready to start building them the other (better) variants have been released.

I picked up a Leviathan, and although it's impressive I prefer the Contemptor. My Leviathan is joining the Sons of Horus:

Man, the sprue gates on this kit are annoying af, can't even fit my JLC blade to all of them even after having cut the pieces loosely off the frame. I wish JLC also made those thin, tiny versions of their saw like the chinese cheapo razor saws, their form factor is perfect, but the teeths on their blades are rubbish, nowhere near JLC tier

Thanks. Iā€™ve been looking for ways to speed up painting white without an airbrush and this is the best Iā€™ve come up with so far. I want pure white and not off white or grey because my brother plays World Eaters and Death Guard and so I want my Scars to stand out as whiter than those Legions, where he can use a dirtier white technique.

Spray with Grey Seer primer in rattle can (I find the contrast primers have the smoothest finish and not gritty)
Spray Tamiya white paint (not primer) in rattle can, sprayed from above and all around except not from directly below. This leaves the underside a slight grey and gives some slight shadowing.
Black line all recesses using oil based black paint
Done!
Weathering is just sponged on dark grey (Eshin) and then some weathering powder for dust on the feet
Thatā€™s it.

The Tamiya white spray has a very slightly semi-gloss or more eggshell type finish that helps the black oil paint very easily flow into the recesses naturally so you donā€™t need to spend ages trying to paint thin black lines. Just touch the black to a crevice and it runs along. It sometimes gets messy but much easier than using thinned black acrylic like I did for years. The black lining makes the white pop without any highlights.

Iā€™ll post some closer photos so you can see if you like the look. Good luck with the Sons of the Great Khan.

Just checked out your Scars and have to say they look great! Just one question if I may - What made you settle on a black oil wash? I'd think grey or dark grey would have given a less contrasty a shade.. unless of course, you wanted as much contrast as possible?

I like how you mixed things up with the shoulderpads a little, keeps the models looking more like individuals

loving those Spireguard.. what models are they?

had a go using some French Napoleonic Old Guard (had to leave the muskets on them as the las guns looked utterly ridiculous, even more so than Old Guard painted red & white, which itself took some doing)

today I haz been mostly working on some Mk VI, and fighting with some decals on some Mk III for my new Death Guard.

experimenting with painting, the base colours at least, on the frames prior to assembly to make getting at some of the more fiddly bits a bit easier.. will see if the pain is worth it when the first five are done

there is a logic there, to get at all the irritating bits you end up able to see but can't get to (normally covered with black primer so in shadow but here using a bone colour and found it highly annoying on the Mk III)

They use the Cadian Infantry Squad as a base, with just the head and torso swapped out (I listed the details of that here: https://ttgamingdiary.wordpress.com/2022/05/30/enter-the-spireguard-test-unit/). The paint scheme serves to further separate them from their Cadian roots.

Hope that helps!

Have a question to ask you regarding the Land Raider Proteus Lascannon mounts: IIRC, 40K/Epic/etc rules have always stated that the firing arc of the swivel mounts is 180 degrees on either side of the hull. This is not reflected convincingly on the model, have a look at these two picts

First pict shows the intended build using components meant to accomodate a dual Lascannon. I have extended the swivel mount as far as physically possible - true firing arc would be pathetically off from a theoretical 180 degree one

Second pict show s wivel mount deliberately built using the bits meant for a Spartan instead, which accomodates a quad lascannon. While looking weird when mounted with only a dual Lascannon, the swivel now extends to much farther towards that theoretical 180 deg sweetness

My OCD would very much like to use the longer Spartan swivel mounts on the dual Lascannons, but then the swivel mount extra armour plate doesn't extend far enough, looking slightly stumped. Any ideas how I could convert the swivel plates to extend a bit further into the guns? Plasticard bits cut into shape?

PS; Apologies for any mold lines, build is still WIP

the old plastic model allowed the weapons to pivot over vertically to face backwards...

you still got blind spots out to either side from about 2:00 - 4:00 & 8:00 to 10:00 on the clock face

and a honking blind spot right in front and right behind the game used to have, plus a narrow overlap front and rear where both could fire

the way they had it the guns had a fixed bar that came out of the side with a ball on the end - captured in a socket with a slot - they could "yaw" left and right viewed from above and rotate 360 around the bar axis

not sure you can get what you want with the top/bottom mount without totally rebuilding it

loving those Spireguard.. what models are they?

had a go using some French Napoleonic Old Guard (had to leave the muskets on them as the las guns looked utterly ridiculous, even more so than Old Guard painted red & white, which itself took some doing)

today I haz been mostly working on some Mk VI, and fighting with some decals on some Mk III for my new Death Guard.

experimenting with painting, the base colours at least, on the frames prior to assembly to make getting at some of the more fiddly bits a bit easier.. will see if the pain is worth it when the first five are done

there is a logic there, to get at all the irritating bits you end up able to see but can't get to (normally covered with black primer so in shadow but here using a bone colour and found it highly annoying on the Mk III)

Note: don't paint the Mk VI on the frames, you will have to repaint to cover up removing mould lines on the sides of the legs...

now experimenting with body & legs assembly and paint, arms to follow once painted

As someone who will eventually be painting up a HH White Scars force, can you share your technique for getting that fantastic looking white?

Thanks for the feedback!

I did not apply it as a full wash. I wanted to keep the white as pure white, but I wanted to emphasize the definition between the plates so I black-lined the recesses. I was using regular black until I saw some tutorials on using oil paint. I still only paint the recesses with it and did not wash the armor plates, if I could avoid it. I used pure black because I wanted high contrast to show the lines and to match the models I already painted.

And yes, I try to mix up the armor, helmets, decals and red spot color because to me the White Scars feel like a very individualistic Legion.

Cool! Didn't know the og plastic kit worked better than the new one in that regard. And yep, I'll still have some blind spots even with the Spartan mount, but the remaining blind spots are not bothering me as much as a gun that seems to have no firing arc at all. The difference in angles is really stark when viewed directly from above. I suppose another way to tackle this would be to alter the shape of the Lascannons, cutting the end of the lower Lascannon to be shorter would also improve firing arc significantly. I'll keep exploring, tht option might be an easier mod to pull off aesthetically speaking..

Speaking of MKVI, as suggested, I dont recommend trying to paint them on the sprue (too many mold lines). Glueing the legs on pose #5 is especially fiddly, you want to take your time with them if you want neat leg joins without drowning the pieces in glue (and potentially making a mess)

On that front, if anyone ever wants to do a 40k-style Praetorian regiment, the Zulu-era British Army models from Warlord Games accept a weapon swap for a Lasgun very well...

Back to Prospero though, I have been getting quite productive over the Christmas break. Managed to finish off a Knight-Preceptor for House Malinax (think they spent most of their time in Tizca hunting down fleeing civilians, so not the most heroic).

Having been put in touch with a local Heresy group, I guess itā€™s time for me to ugh start painting.

Going for a speedy, neat table top standard. Nothing too fancy, but hopefully a bit beyond simple ā€œthree colours and baseā€.

As a super reluctant painter, but also someone with no after work obligations, Iā€™m going to aim for 10 Marines per week, starting with my Line infantry. And once a unit is done, do a Dread or a Tank to avoid monotony. And once my session stamina is stronger, maybe 20 infantry during the week (which to be honest is a piffling 4 per evening) and a Dread/Tank of the weekend.

Have you thought about going the contrast/other-company-equivalent route, Doc? If painting isn't your thing, they might be of use to you for getting your quick base coats down.

Going with Dark Angels, and have never liked the Contrast results for black,

I do however have an airbrush, and a really nice glossish black for it from Vallejo.

I figure I basecoat 20 in on evening using the airbrush. From there, do 5 Marines a night, churning out a squad a week with time to spare.

I think Iā€™m probably a better painter than I give myself credit, I just need to build up hobby stamina and not expect super speed - a hangover from ā€œgifted childā€ days.

Or even just do a stage or two a night across all 20.

I know what you mean about this, but...

I have had quite some success with Black Templars contrast combined with the Slap Chop method (example here - check out how the shoulder pads turned out: https://ttgamingdiary.wordpress.com/2022/10/19/da-goff-fumpas/). If you can make that work, you may get through more than ten guys a week.

Now, not taking my own advice (!), I have nevertheless managed to get a whole squadron of Predators done for my Space Woofs:

A stage or two a night across 20 marines will be efficient, but will also feel like work. OTOH you have an airbrush, so unless you are going for a highly decorated Dark Angels look, the bulk of your work can be done with just airbrushing and drybrushing the metal areas. Unless you are into Eavy Metal style edge highlights, that is..

If you are going for quantity over quality, maybe working in batches of 20 isn't a bad idea. Personally, I find general procrastinating to be a much bigger time sink than doing actual painting, once you commit to a plan and get going, you can get to tabletop standard pretty fast.

pondering similar here, so far the Terminators I have (10x Tartaros for my XVth) have managed to look scary but have only gotten into combat once, they seem to be a very expensive distraction carnifex and not a lot more - I suspect the same points of basic marines will manage a heck of a lot more, even if only slightly more mobile.

seems to my not very experienced eye unless you can deep strike them or fork out for a somewhat expensive transport (which itself won't be that hard to kill anyway and will draw fire) they probably manage a single round of combat, yes they likely win it, but probably don't get another due to lack of mobility, the Cataphractii especially

besides I like the idea of a horde of marines

I've managed to do pretty well with Terminators and have been on the receiving end of some brutal combats from them in return.
I feel like the biggest issue people still come up against is a lack of LoS blocking terrain or avoiding variant deployment/mission types. If you only ever play one type of mission with Dawn of War deployment, you're definitely missing out on missions and deployments that can work to your advantage when it comes to making Terminators useful. Terrain makes a game IMO and if you're playing with no LoS blocking and just a couple of small ruins then the game can become one-sided very quickly.

Also...

today I is mostly disliking how the Mk VI models go together. the concept is nice, paired arms each with a paired gun that should fit any body. nice concept.

for the love of gork why is the gun not keyed in some way to the arms, and the arms key with enough flex to make later fitting the gun a PitA

wanted to part assemble and paint to make painting the front and rear of the weapon easier, but seems essentially impossible to do that without then having to fill small but irritating gaps

Built me a Sicaran kit this afternoon.

Went pretty smoothly, but one of the track assemblies was being difficult when attaching it to the hull. Couldnā€™t find anything obviously causing a problem, and putting the chunky top plate in position seemed to sort it out.

Not sure Iā€™d add another, but will consider its variants once they come along.

I see what you mean on the green. But whilst it might not be what you wanted, hoped for or intended? For what itā€™s worth, I kind of like it.

A nice aged Victoriana type green. The sort of thing you can tell used to be much more vibrant, but has aged gracefully despite losing its original lustre.

have to say I somewhat like that green

in other news, a second ten man tactical squad has been largely assembled - this time just the shoulder pads and backpacks left to assemble post painting. nice discovery that with care the studded shoulder pad can be assembled while still on the frame to make priming easier

still not hugely impressed with the gun arms though, and may be an obvious point, but where the feck is the bolt pistol? (and more to the point why is there a plasma pistol instead of it?)

likewise at least one chainsword would have been nice, indeed the same equipment options as per the Mk III box would have been good

Not sure if the MKIII plastics have larger hands? I think they do.. OTOH those MKIII chainswords look fab, and the ammo clips which come with the kit are a purrfek match for beakie Umbra Bolters

Here is one Apotechary conversion pict from /r 30K which I really liked.. AFAICT uses all plastic bits, you can see a MKIII chainsword hanging from the back

But I guess now I just pin a paperclip handle to each part for airbrushing and I'm done with 3 of them, with magnetized arms. But not gonna do any extra arms beyond the loadout in my initial roster right now.

pondering a second AoD box, thinking being I know I want more marines, and likely more than one box (circa Ā£80 for two boxes), I can likely use the terminators (as one box is meah but twenty of them starts to be an elite force on its own), thats another Ā£40 at which point the box is only another Ā£20..

the second contemptor is useful a second spartan less so but nicely annoying, could maybe eBay the rulebook or find someone locally who wants one

irritation being its hard to justify getting anything like more marines without considering the box.

The Spartan holds decent resale value if nothing else.

I now have 80 MkVI awaiting assembly.

I thinkā€¦.. third 20 strong Tactical Squad, 2 x 10 Heavy squads (Lascannon and Volkite) and 2 x 10 Support Squads (Melta and Big Volkite).

Which leaves 20 wanting a role.

thought here is 2x20, then maybe a third 20 man squad, then probably a ten man support squad of some flavour, with the hope the pressure of the 40-60 advancing means the support squad either isn't fired at much or if it is its actually a help... borderline Soviet Strelkovy tactics. thinking is too many support units and they just get wiped, need a threatening core of warm bodies first.

backup will be at least one (because its built) veteran squad, potentially three (a flamer & melta gun in each, again for redundancy, did think one melta squad and two flamer squads but then the melta one dies quickly, this way they need to zap 30 to get them all, not ten)

also that second Spartan could be fun in a terminator heavy list, a bit like a Tiger tank list, simply having it and using it occasionally means opponents who try to list tailor can't assume "infantry horde"

Spartans are a kind of Swiss army tank, after a fashion.

Decent enough firepower to worry even Super Heavies, spesh as itā€™s all twin linked, and a decent transport capacity, even if not originally fielded as a transport.

I mean, if youā€™ve a bunch of nutters about to descend on a unit, you can hide them in the Spartan for a turn, potentially.

Spartan, and indeed Land Raiders have always come over in 28mm as a bit "make up your mind will you". they have long range stand off anti tank firepower, and transport capacity

wanting to both keep the range and get close, and with the current HH rules wanting to get close but needing screening infantry around a mobile enemy for safety

you end up paying with for transport capacity you do not need (with the expensive 'assault' rules) or for heavy weapons you likely won't fire (Death Guard excepted)

Doc, if you're looking to use spare bodied have you considered a support squad with plasma repeaters? Ive been running them in a squad of 5 and they're quite nasty. A squad of 10 in a rhino would do horrible things to people.

Another option would be a veteran squad. They make for a good cheapish delivery option for tooled up praetors/paladins and are quite versatile in themselves.

If memory serves in 1.0 you could only have 1 C-beamer on a dread, so having something like the Volkite helped protect it from deep striking squads which as they tended to come in close, would render the C-beamer less then useful.

This is my quandary with HH models. I have a reasonable idea of what will be effective, but it's not necessarily what I want to do in terms of the models. A big part of the appeal of the game is putting these weird looking weapons on things.

I like your Contemptors very much. I especially like the dust/mud effects, and the reddish sheen to the metal. There are a couple of stray blobs of paint that I'd clean up if I were you (like the dots on the lascannon barrels).

Both have high range. And the S value on the bigger volkite is high enough to start scratching paint so in a pinch you can impromptu use the Volkite to finish off a smaller tank with the C beam. Sure the C beam is the "better" at on distance but both are good weapons against infantry of any kind.

So yeah, it will do ok. Granted the fist is normally the best option because of brutal, but let's be honest, the contemptor is sucha good model, if you go in slightly non optimal that still won't really detract from it's performance.

Currently working on 2, soon 3 Heresy era projects in two different scales.

Today I finished a second Iron Hands Contemptor Talon for Epic 30k. Just base pigments and maybe shoulder decals left. 6mm scale, GW 90s models.

And finished the acrylic painting and weathering stages of my first 5 EC Legionnaires for my new army project. The stereotype is to do EC super clean and crisp, parade ready but that has been done to death by way better painters than me. And in the from darkness of the far future, there is mostly just war and very few parades. So I have gone for a weathered grimdark look. I want to depict my Traitor EC in battle conditions!

Just matt varnish, oil/grime and pigments left. Pretty happy with how these are turning out.

More from my projects can be found at my recently started hobby Instagram account @allalongthehobbytable if anyone's interested.

I bought the Masters of the Chapter and two of the 6th Ed extras many moons ago when I first started HH with Emperor's Children. I ended up sticking two in my Iron Warriors and I've been dredging up as many rescue models as I can to prevent my bank from hunting me down. I lost the hammer for the Master of the Fleet so I replaced it with the sword instead. It worked surprisingly well and with a spare Firedrake head he looked relatively fancy enough to be important.

That's it indeed, as the new one is very poseable I decided to take advantage of it... the downside is that it takes forever to assemble and there's some noticeable seam lines.

I don't really notice any outlandish seams in your build though? Anyways, unlimited posability is still worth it IMHO. I never liked the way the old Contemptors looked, the poses were subpar. Such stiff looking poses look passable on a Castaferrum, but not on a Contemptor.

I did fill them all, so I sure how not ^^, but for example there's a seam right in the middle of the torso, and on the roof od the torso (as it's a separate piece) and shoulders have big seams front and back that you need to fill up and clean. Getting used to resin prinded parts, it's just much more annoying xD.

Still, it's a pretty great model, and it's very easy to make modular (the gun arm doesn't even need magnets or anything, as it stays put just by pressure.

not too far a squad of Mk VI for my Death Guard being finished, painting of the models are basically done except weathering.. waiting decals and the base painting

pondering light weathering, aware most grime them up but I think a bone/green scheme actually looks quite nice and plan to keep them pretty clean at least initially.

may add a bit to squads that earn their spurs so to speak.

squad of ten, another near a similar state with the idea of "minimum usable force" in the short term then adding to it

actually quite enjoyed painting them up, transported many years back to 1st edition when this insanity started

Yes, but I place the slightly smaller marks on a built up base a few mm tall to make them roughly the same height, if not the same proportions, as the Mk VI. I have brought some Mk III. Mk IV and V I have printed so they're mk vi scale.

Here is my Mk V Assault Squad just built.

using Mk VI for tactical and other "normal" marines, have Mk III for veterans, they look fine, also likely to end up with a smattering of Mk VI for the sake of it (easy way for the third tactical squad when added to stand out)

also assembled a Demos Predator, laser cannon sponsons and the laser cannon turret, heavy flamer added (cheaper than the combi flamer.. go figure) so there is a defensive weapon just in case.

configuration is glued, no magnets, my force needs the cannons and this is a cheap way to add them, while some of the other configurations look good and have utility they don't really do stuff my infantry can't do already (issue for me is zapping dreadnoughts where the AP2 is useful and scaring enemy armour very slightly - while also giving enemy armour something to use as a chew toy thats not actually expensive)

Agreed. The way it goes together means you have to fill gaps along narrow, angled edges, as well as those annoying joins on the front of the sponsons (have you filled yours?). And that excessively tight-fitting base plate is something that just shouldn't happen now. I've also noticed on the HH tanks there is a tendency towards having parts with very visible joins, such as the side panels of all of the vehicle hulls (which are in multiple parts), the exhausts on the Rhino, and the launcher on the Scorpius.

decals on the Predator I've been working on, and some (very) light weathering, still needs some more bright metal but perfectly table top viable now.

also assembled the next ten Mk VI to bring either one squad to 20, or two to 15.. once the 1st squad is finished to sit alongside the completed 2nd squad (it got complicated)

aim to prime tomorrow with the bone colour, wash and drybrush of the bone colour completed tomorrow.

still have the shoulder pads to assemble, will be primed black this time for the green and the bronze

Q: how viable is it to paint the tracks prior to installing? (have a light armour scheme and want to spray the tracks black before painting brown.. just done a predator after install and it hurt)

also today a 7 man heavy support laser cannon squad appear to have been largely assembled, left shoulder, head and backpack to go on post painting.. and the first five of a ten man flamer squad assembled except the shoulder pads

You certainly can! However due to the way the tracks of the Spartan are attached to the sprue, you'll need to do some touch up work after you've glued them on as the tracks sit proud of the hull and you can see the points where they were attached to the sprue.

I always attach the tracks before painting the model. I want them to be securely attached (it's a gaming piece, after all), and I hate trying to glue painted pieces together. Most GW tracked vehicles are fairly easy to paint with the tracks attached. Especially if you use the weathering to hide any sloppy painting. I say 'most' because I am now painting my Legion Shadowsword, having assembled the tracks first, and it's proving to be a bit of a bastard...

So what are you working on? [A Hours Heresy Hobby thread] @ 2023/01/25 08:53:18

oh they are definitely possible to paint attached, just way easier not to (accepting the touching up of the sprue attachment points as required), and very noted weathering helps cover many sins

can see the bit about securely attached, never really had an issue scraping a few bits for plastic glue either..

I mean I was tempted to have the tracks painted in the same bone as the tank, then just dirty like most had worn away but darker looks better to me

And I remember the shadowsword my IG have somewhere and yes that was a sod to paint as well

Definately not. :-) They're primed with Halfords matt grey primer. I suppose it's quite a match for bare plastic in my dodgy photo. It's actually slightly lighter in colour. Sort of a mix of colour between Dawnstone and Admin grey.
I find the Halfords primers cover so much better than any other I've used over the years. Black/White/Grey/Yellow.

Maybe at a later date, but I was able to get a deal on a Chainbreaker Lance box which will give me everything else I need to complete my army, save one questoris knight. Iā€™d rather get a playable army right now, but if I enjoy using the army Iā€™ll consider grabbing them in the future.

I treated myself to Sicaran this week. The sprue with the tracks has a lot of extra track links. I'm looking forward for using them for decorations and accessories.
Also gets me speculating, what else they might want to do with the Sicaran hull and those extras.

Currently finializing my Ravener brood, and after that probably the 10 gargoyles and same number of spore mines I still had laying unfinished.

Also succeeded in greenstuff producing a krull head from a mold I made of modeling clay, only will have to cut it to a proper shape so that I can work with it on my wraithknight that is supposed to look like an avatar of Cegorach.

Nothing else on my plate atm, skipping this months challenge (too broad theme, so no fun for me) so that allows me to actually finish what I was working on hehe.

Still going on my SoH. Iā€™ve converted a Reaper autocannon for my Caraphractii, and a Champion (based on Fafnir Rann). The boarding shield was a pain to modify - lots of fine detail to remove. I am still fiddling around with the Champion - Iā€™ve already removed the topknot and replaced it with a crest.

Heā€™s going down fighting. Got to give him the respect. And then find a rock/ledge with a good edge for the dread to scrape the gore off his foot.

I used to follow a Khorne blog here where Ultras routinely were getting butchered on bases and dioramas. But always fighting. Iā€™m fine with being base decorations, but treat them as worthy foes if they are still alive.

Cleaning and building a Spartan myself. Trying to decide how much I want to fiddle with magnets. The 4xLCs will probably just get glued to their mounts, although the whole sponson pops off. Is it worth it for the hull guns? or just glue the HBs on and call it a day?

And then the question about if I should paint the tracks separately.

Fun kit to build, although Iā€™d recommend dry fitting the hull parts to the tread sides while assembling. Some of the connections are basically glueing 2 plates edge-on without good guides. If itā€™s a few degrees off, itā€™s not going to line up when you try to put the whole thing together.

I magnetized the hull weapons and i'm not sure it was worth it to be honest. It was a bit fiddly and they still don't line up as smoothly as if glued straight on, although the magnets do their job and they stick on quite nicely.
It's a bit of a toss up to me. If you plan on using more then just one weapon option, then i'd say take the time to magnetise them properly. I probably should have just glued the lascannons on though as i'm probably never going to take the flamers and would only use the heavy bolters if I didn't have the points available for the lascannons.

YMMV of course.

I am doing the same. I was going to save my Spartan for my next (Ultramarine) army, but one night I found myself building and painting the interior and now it's joined my SoH.

I'm going to just stick the lascannons onto the hull mount and call it done. But then I've never been a fan of having removable guns etc - I'd just lose them.

It is a pretty good build, although it has a lot of strange angles. It's certainly fiddly, for the reason you mention, but actually goes together much better than the WH40k Land Raider. If you push the hull onto one of the track sponsons as soon as you assemble it, it will ensure that everything is at the correct angle. I left the tracks until last as well, so I could make sure the model was straight and sat flat, but I will assemble them all before I paint the model. One small tip - don't forget to paint the forward section of the interior ceiling before you put it all together. There is interior detail on the underside of the hull superstructure piece, and it's easy to miss.

I'm kitbashing a new HQ model for my IXth. Any suggestions as on how to get more in-scale arms/hands versions for these bits? The left inferno pistol arm can be swapped for a 2022 MKVI spare arm (just cutting off the gun itself), but how could I get a smaller, "artified" looking Powerfist for the right arm?

The arms certainly look too long, although it might partly be the pose of the base figure - he seems to be squatting. The power fist itself may not be the issue; you probably just need to shorten the upper arm. As a rule, the elbow armour will normally be touching the bottom edge of the pauldron.

Thanks! Yeah, agreed, the elbow should be almost touching the pauldron, at the very least. I also started thinking that Custodes model range might have appropriate looking artificed Powerfist bits in some kit, I'll look into it. The torso is from the EC Praetor kit, I don't think he is crouching, just leaning a bit.

It's an unfortunate pose, as it lowers the model quite a lot. Perhaps he needs a nice tactical rock, so he looks more commanding. The power fist itself actually looks fine - I would just deal with the upper arm.

A more elaborate base sounds like a great idea, will look into it!

I'll try repositioning the arm before going too far with a suitable replacement bit

Agreed on both counts. The hull was a pain in the arse. Not the worst thing i've ever assembled by far, but just annoying. The tracks however were great, and once you had them where they needed to go just plopped in nicely.

I modeled a new "turret" piece for the Spartan that takes 6x2 mm magnets. You have to put two in the turret piece, one in the roof piece (which does well with extra magnets to keep it against the vehicle body, but it's workable with only the 6x2 mm) and one inside the vehicle, so it's a bit late for you unfortunately. So you print three turrets and swap the entire thing instead of the weapons which I felt was very difficult to magnetise as well.

That's a nice collection of tanks. While we would all prefer some more plastic infantry, the HH tanks look great. It also looks as though the Land Raider goes together a bit more neatly than the Spartan.

Did you find that the rear panels of the Scorpius launcher a bit troublesome? There is a join that goes straight down the middle of the vents, and they didn't end up entirely level. Overall, their HH vehicle kits don't seem to be as well designed (in terms of assembly) as the latest WH40K kits.

I notice a lot of comments about tank construction

My spartan was a NIGHTMARE I had to glue and re glue parts and my Rhino went together like a pile of soggy cardboard...

Lots of cutting and re-positioning I have a theory I think its Forgeworld designs being re made for plastics... So I am going to take it slow next time dry fit and double dry fit...

I think Spartans need Elastic bands as it suffers from extreme sag...

Fun fact, the only thing that i have to say that is bad about the Scorpius is the fact that half the parts for the turret merely exist for GW to save plastic instead of ease of accessability, but beyond that no, i had not had any issues at all on it beyond getting agry at the turret.

Same can't be said about the sicarian frontal plate....

The proteus is basically LIKE the spartan BUT it has a singular floorplate and that makes it infinetly easier to build. Also i disagree, despite being often more parts in regards to turrets f.e. they are FAR easier to magnetise than 40k tanks.

The spartan has the issue of having a split bottom plate, which basically makes the whole body , that is reliant on the bottom plate for statics and has the same issue with the top plate, one annoying tank.

Also in some cases it's better to change the steps around, f.e. the assault ramp, your' better off at starting it ONTOP of the ground plate.

Also in regards to the forge world designs... nope, if it were forgeworld then they'd chare you 100+$ for not even removing massive resin blocks.
This one is solely gw.

I often wonder how the forgeworld one went together? yeah it would be Ā£100+ pray for not warped resin lol

I am definately going to attack the Spartan differently when I build my Typhon and Cerberus in regards to the bottom of the tank.

I wonder if GW ever even looked at the translation from resin designs to plastic in the frenzy to get Age of Darkness out?

Honestly i rekon if it were Resin, then it would be a singular Bottom plate, as it was AFAIK.

But GW isn't particular custommer friendly if they can save some pence on plastic.

That's Mk2

Most legions only have Mk2 and Mk3 (which is just the same suit with extra armour bolted on to the front).

Looks like Mk III to me. But Iā€™m not that bothered. The point is that this heavier armoured look doesnā€™t seem well suited to a recon role.

Yeah cool. Most legions, especially loyalist, still literally only had Mk2 and Mk3 to pick from. Mk4 was given to Horus's pet legions and Mk6 only had a couple thousand suits total in existance at the time of the Siege of Terra, with everyone except RG and AL hating them, some to the point they were giving them away to anyone who would take them.

I am definately going to attack the Spartan differently when I build my Typhon and Cerberus in regards to the bottom of the tank.

I wonder if GW ever even looked at the translation from resin designs to plastic in the frenzy to get Age of Darkness out?

Never built a resin Spartan. I do have a resin Cerberus though. Same basic chassis. Easiest resin vehicle that I ever built. Easier than most plastics, IMO.

The creator oHm on Cults3d has some, I'm no expert but I think based on Tigris bolters, so best combined with Mk4 guys. Also combis in the same style. And Red-warden-miniatures sells file for scopes and long barrels you can put on plastic boltguns.

TBF i think the easiest alternative would be to buy MK IV marines and slap scopes on their tigris boltguns.

Shame that GW' doesn't really do marine infantry atm.

Half a tartaros squad, or 1 msu squad. es yes, reaper autocannon not good ... don't care, i like autocannons sue me.

Spoiler:

Jokes aside, has anyone experience with the headhunter upgrade? I am considering buying a bunch but i first want to know on what plastic marines i need to fit them, repsectivly. I reckon i'll have to cut off torses from MK VI marines if i want them on that size and source hands holding them ?

They're intended for Mk4 but should fit any pre-Age of Darkness firstborn.

I wanted an "old timey" plasma cannon (like this guys' https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/539597-Plasma%20Cannon.html ) for my Contemptors so they fit with the resin Scimitars and turns out none exist from either FW or digital, so I bashed my own

(bottom one, top is what passes for a modern plasma in stl land)

These guys are looking good! You seem to have mixed in some non-Mk VI stuff there - is that a Mk V from the SM Heroes range? I am going down the same route with my Ultras.

I used up my first pot of Sons of Horus Green today. I still have a bunch of things in there to finish painting, and a bunch of Justaerin models are being held up my a lack of top knots and indecisiveness on what I am going to do concerning their special power axe.

Spoiler:

I also like to say I'm finally done with getting power armor units until Dispoilers and/or Assault marines are in plastic. But part of me also wants yet another box of MkIV to finish filling out the Heavy Bolter squad, add to the Missile Launcher squad and create a dedicated vet squad with Banestrike bolters and chainswords.

I'm mixing Mk6 with Mk4 and a sprinkling of Mk3. My favorite is MK4, but I like the proportion of the MK6. To get the shorter models to look a little taller, I put some cork on the base to lift them slightly to match the height of the Mk6. If other Heresy marks are released, I'll add them in too. Except for Mk7, which I feel should be reserved for loyalist legions that I think could have been supplied them toward the end of the Heresy.

The idea I was going for my Sons of Horus is that they Siege of Terra as traitors who are scrounging for parts and throwing squad remnants together to get them back to full strength. If I play them as loyalists, they are basically cut off from all supply lines, not being trusted and making due with whatever material have now and fighting until the last marine falls.

So I finished building the sparten (as much as itā€™s getting pre-paint)
Spoiler:

For the hull guns I glued the pair to a thin piece of plascard, and stuck a 4x1mm magnet to the back. Drilled and sunk a larger magnet into the turret. Due to the recessed nature, the extra space is not noticable. And much easier than maging each part of the twin guns separately. The pintle mount HB/MM is just a snug pushfit. Clipped the nubs off the mounting post so that swaps out without magnets.

Next up to clean and build are 5 more capheracti. The first 5 from the BaC box I built as pure 2xLC, with a grenade harness on the sarge. Building these to fill out the squad and give it some options. 2 specialists with HF and Chainfists, and 3 more 2xLC guys, one with a vexila. These are not the guys to use coms or auspexes. Chainfists are there because sometimes you need to carve open the crunchy box to get to the soft bits inside. HFs are a ā€œwhy notā€ pic. Needed something for the off-hand.
Spoiler:

WIP on the paint bench are 5 more destroyers. Again, adding to a half squad done a while back.
Spoiler:

These guys took just about every spare bolt pistol in my bits box when I built them. Iā€™ve got regular and jump packs for them, but need to clean up and mag the JPs. Need to finish these guys by the end of the month.

Tonight Matthew, Iā€™ve been back at it,

Built a squad if 10 Lascannons, and a half squad of Volkite Heavies, with another 5 to come, but probs tomorrow now.

Iā€™m again reminded just what a pleasure the MkVI kit is to build. Not only are the channels in easily clipped and cleaned places, but the kit isnā€™t even vaguely fiddly. And you can build them pretty quickly.

Sure you donā€™t get quite the variety of poses separate torsos bring, but itā€™s not as if 5 base models are overly repetitive in pose.

Today, aiming for finishing off the Heavy Volkite squad, and at least a 20 stronk squad of Bolters. Maybe with Chain Bayonets. Maybe with just plain Bayonets.

That should leave me with another 40 to build, which I think will be Special Weapon squads. Plasma, Melta, Volkite andā€¦.either Flamer or Rotor.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Volkite Culverin squad now all built.

Of the set, the Lascannon feel the fiddliest, as you need to get the scope glued on correctly, as it helps form the socket for the right armā€™s trigger grip.

Right, on to my third Tactical Squad. But might leave the Sargeā€™s gun hand off until I can get my mitts on a Volkite Serpenta from the Jetbikes.

Doing the good old "Find every single Space Marine part you can" unit building recently. Managed to scrounge another 10 Despoilers, 5 Volkite Support Marines, and 6 Outriders for the Iron Hands as well as a bunch of other random parts to use for other stuff. Managed to find a load of parts for a friend who is starting an Emperor's Children army as well which was pretty neet.
