You can hear little, other than the dripping of water.

I burst through the door, my gun ready to fire.

What appears to be the beginning of a basement drips with moisture, the very air suffocating from humidity.

I continue with great cautuon, looking out for the slightest movement, but rushed to meet up with my squad.

Gaz tipps over a desk to use as cover for the oncoming attack

As Gaz kicks the desk over, six more of the pale savages stream through the doors, each carrying an assortment of improvised weapons. "It's mine, you can't have it!"

(Varz)

You move at a fast walk through the humid hallway, the sound of a dull banging sound can be heard up ahead. As you investigate, you can see a man in workman's garb banging his head against the wall in rhythmic beats.

(Rachel)

The gunner's head snaps back as you shoot through his skull, painting the wall behind him a vivid red. You can hear the sounds of combat coming from nearby.

I smirk and leave the room.

(Rachel)

You step out into the hall, finding yourself near the lobby, where half a dozen of the ghouls charge James and Gaz with improvised weapons.

Gaz sprays them with bullets. 8

"You. Turn around, and put your back to the wall slowly. Try anything and I'll blow your brains out. If you have any left."

I raise my pistol, and aim it at the mans head.

(Reminds me of a scene from Dead Space this does )

"he rachel little help please"

I aim and fire.

As Rachel fires from behind the mob, Gaz rakes down several of them with his Ripsaw, tearing them in half with bloody pops. James blows the heads from the shoulders of several others, and Rachel lays into the remaining two with her power saw. Soon, the room is silent.

James looks up at them "Well, that was fun. "

"I'll say."

"sooo rachel what did you find out?"

(Varz)

The man ignores you, continuing to batter his head against the moist wall. He appears to be humming to himself, his vocalizations growing more fevered as he bashes his skull faster and faster until he crumples to the floor.

"Nothing."

"Dang, we need to get to the power switch asap. Haul ass guys" we continue onward.

"can lead on ray"

(Was I right about Dead Space reference?)

I shoot him to make sure he is dead before moving on.

I make contact with the team,

"Gaz, I ain't been able to speak with you for some time now? Whats your location? Status? Also who else is in your group? I would like to speak to them."

"Let's go."

(UN TEAM, including Rachel)

As you make your way deeper into the Ward, the set of ornate double doors ahead of you burst open, and several figures in tattered red robes spill out, more organized than the ravening beings you have already encountered. One kicks over a desk and takes cover behind it, spraying the hallway with bullets from his assault rifle. Another revs a filthy chainsaw, charging towards you with abandon. Two more wave pump-shotguns moving into firing range and unleashing a hail of pellets. They chant "Corpus Edimus!" as they do so.

i shoot the one with the chainsaw first then the shotgunners

The chainsaw wielding ghoul goes down in a messy hail of limbs and viscera, the corpse falling to the floor with a wet thud.

"Varz, my name is James. There is a power box near your location. Find it, turn it on manually and we will regroup on this position, I'll relay our coordinates to you when the time comes. James out."

"Acknowledged. See ya soon."

I think to myself,

"Now where will this power box be?"

I look around.

I aim for the one with the assault rifle.

Gaz's ripsaw tears one of the ghouls in half, splattering his insides over the walls as the hail of high-velocity rounds reduce his flesh to the constancy of wet paper. The other shot gunner attempts to close, but James turns his head inside-out with his high-powered rifle, bursting his brain case like a melon. Rachel fires her rifle through the table, chewing through the gunman's cover with a hail of hot death, bursting his internal organs with meaty pops. He crumples to the ground, wheezing as he slumps over, barley alive. He laughs, spraying blood through filthy teeth.

(Varz)

You can see that ahead of you, a doorway leads into what appears to be a flooded chamber. A small light blinks in the black waters, perhaps the signal light for the auxiliary power box....

(wow that has to be the most graphic scene so far)
"who wants to take the lead now then?"

I walk towards it, keeping my assault rifle ready.

"I'm up for it."

You slip into the cold waters, ducking beneath as you swim towards your goal, the oxygen in your suit more than enough for the task at hand. As you near the halfway point, a low, deep moan comes from your left.

You can see two pathways, one hall leads to the right, and one leads straight on.

As Lazarus comes to a close, I've been doing a bit of play testing over Facebook for the new mechanics I'll be introducing in Drowning in Darkness. If any of you have any suggestions as to the new mechanics or story line of Drowning in Darkness, let me know, there's still time to test them out.

Moving down the right hallway, you can see a group of red robed ghouls advancing down the corridor in phalanx formation, holding crude shields made out of scrap metal. The shield wall opens long enough for a pale hand to toss a grenade at your feet.

I look to my left, ready to spray bullets into whatever is there, while still moving towards my objective.

Gaz kicks the grenade back into the advancing ghoulish force, their cries of surprise cut short by a meat-rending explosion that sends wet chunks of meat and bits of metal scattering about the room.

(Varz)

As you turn your head, you immediately wish you had not. A monstrous creature appearing as a squid-like horror with three massive, snapping jaws encircling a ring of crooked teeth swims towards you.

"F**k."

I quickly swing my assault rifle around and start punching bullets into the monstrositie's flesh

You continue down the hallway, the smell of fetid meat is tinged with a hint of barley, which strikes you as odd. As you turn around the corner, a man in a surgical gown and armed with a tissue laser lifts his weapon towards you. As he sees you more clearly, he stammers; "You're human! Not one f*cking step closer! Who the hell are you?"

(If Rachel dies, don't blame me, mmkay?? Poor planning to give the n00b the favorite character. Fetid meat and barley?? Applebee's??)

"Guys, do we tell him the truth?" I look toward the others.

I tackle Gaz. "What the hell are you doing!? He's friendly!" I look back at the man,"Well, as friendly as they get in this hell hole. Stand down Gaz." I stand up and slowly approach him "We are officers in the UN. Who are you? If you lower your weapon, we'll show you the same courtesy."

(UN TEAM)

The man looks surprised, yet he does not lower the tissue laser. "I said stay the f*ck back! Take off your helmets! Slowly, one at a time!"

(Varz)

Your shots go wild as the Leviathan wraps one of it's tentacles around your leg, pulling you towards it's horrid maw.

"hmph, ok"
*Gaz slowly takes off his helmet

I stop coming closer and take off my helmet. "We're friendly, but if you insist to point the weapon at us, we won't be. We're not going to hurt you unless you force us to. Please lower your weapon. We want to try to get as many people out of here alive as possible."

(UN TEAM)

The man relaxes a bit, seeing your faces, but he points the tissue laser at Rachel. "Show me your face!"

"Argh f**k!"

I send an emergency message out to the team,

"F**k! Need help! One of the creatures has got me!!!"

I shoot at it repeatedly and try to escape from its grasp,

The man lowers his weapon slowly, looking at each of you in turn. "So... you're not ghouls. How...how did you get down here?"

You fire several rounds into it's maw, breaking some of the Leviathan's teeth as you kick free.

"feth. You!"

I continue to punch rounds into it while trying to retreat top the power box.

You swim rapidly away, but your shots go wild as the Leviathan grips your legs again, pulling towards it's maw.

Drowning in Darkness Teaser!
I know a secret. When I wake up, I see things you should never see when you're awake, but when I close my eyes, they're always waiting for me. I sleep whenever I can, my nightmares are often better than my reality. When I wake up, the nightmare is still there, mocking me. Twisting and warping, it...it wears their faces. It laughs at me, telling me my failings, that I'm not strong enough to stop it, that one day soon, it will become a part of me, and me of it. That thing, the Nightmare, it told me the secret. Something so terrible, that I...I can't remember it, no matter how hard I try. When I try to remember, all I hear are names; Emilie, Scott, Rachel, Gaz, James, Nick, Dez... I think one of them is mine, but I don't know which. I see things, too. Creatures wearing their faces, merging together, creating the Nightmare. And singing, always singing, and telling me to sing their songs. Part of me wants to join them, to leave this empty existence behind, and become a part of something greater. But then I look further, and I can hear them screaming. The faces, they're in pain. They don't want to sing the songs, but the Nightmare makes them. The faces, they want me to free them somehow, but the Nightmare won't let me. When I'm awake, I can still hear them screaming. I don't know what day it is, or even the year, hell, I don't even know who I am. Maybe I'm one of the faces, screaming endlessly in pain as I am forced to sing a song the Nightmare taught me. The only thing I know is that I'm drowning. Drowning in darkness.

(UN TEAM)

The man looks surprised. "Where is he? If the ghouls got him... it might be best to leave him."

(Whoah! Is that Varz talking in that?)

"No. Let go of me. Bitch."

I shoot it with all my rage, and try to get free.

You fire a burst into the Leviathan's circular mouth, sending meat and teeth spraying out in all directions under the murky water. It groans in fury, and tugs you into it's mouth, all turns to blackness as it's teeth close around your waist. You have seconds to live at most. Time for something drastic.

(Uh, Gaz doesn't know that. He knows Varz is in the basement, but doesn't know the details)

"Well, feth you."

I take out my knife and rip open the beasts skin from the inside.

With a cry of rage, you rip open the Leviathan's throat with your blade, filling the water with it;s viscous blood as it moans in pain, expelling you from it's mouth as it flails about in it;s death throws.

"I'll tell, under one condition. you take me with you wherever you're going. I'm tired of being a prisoner of the flesheaters."

"Finally. Now die in silence... bitch."

I contact the team again.

"It is dead. I just barely killed it. Now I am going to continue onwards to the power box."

Just before I continue, I punch a few more bullets into the beast to make sure it is dead.

(Varz)

You finally reach the power box, flicking the switches on in sequence, and the water is suddenly flooded with light from the fixtures above. You give a small whoop of delight as the air cyclers start back up, flushing fresh air into the Facility. Your com buzzes with the voice of Corporal Clieg, your supervisor. "Holy hell! The power's back on! Hey, Varz! Where the hell are you? I won't lie things are looking really bad out here, the blanks have sent a retrieval force, and we're badly outnumbered. We're ready to call down a strike on the Facility rather than let it fall into Conclave hands. Get yourself out of there, things are going to get ugly real quick. We'll be waiting to pick you up at the Primary Gate, you have an hour to get out of there."

"Yes!"

I contact the team,

"James, the power is back, I flicked the switch. It's done."

Second Drowning in Darkness Teaser-

They come in their thousands, thinking they can destroy the only semblance of order the world has ever seen. They come under the banners of 'freedom' and 'liberty', naive notions of equality that disappoint without fail. They think my people aching for revolt, for their soft minded ideals. There, they are greatly mistaken. My people will stack their corpses high in the streets, creating a great wall that even the tanks of the UN will be unable to breach. My might is absolute, those that challenge me are destroyed, as is custom. Those with potential join us, for they know us to be the one true beacon of light in the darkness. Let them come. We will drown them in their own blood, haunting their nightmares until they breath their last. For I am the Voice, the indomitable will of the Conclave, and they shall know fear.

"Well Jeremy," I extend my hand grinning, " the hunt's almost over." " Team, we need to recon with Varz asap. Command, this is MIA Captain Jacobs. Is there any way you could detonate a wall to allow for a easier escape? I check my tracker to see if I could find a easy way out.

(UN TEAM)

The voice on the other line pauses for a second before responding; "James Jacobs? Holy sh*t! You're still alive? We thought the blanks had done you in for sure! We might be able to blast down the Primary Gate, but that will take time. If there's anyone that needs to be evacuated, get them assembled ASAP."

"Once we get Varz we will make our way to the main gate. They said it would take time to blast it down. Varz, do you need us to meet you half way or do you think you could make it on your own?"

"When Varz gets here make for the Primary Gate. Wait for me there. If rescue comes and I'm not there yet, leave without me. I need to get West and his men. I hope they've freed Strolek by now. In case I don't make it, Gaz, Rachel, it's been an honor serving with you."

"Same here, but you'll make it."

Darksage has asked me to write a fiction piece on the Lazarus Affair, creating something akin to a small novel. If you would like me to do so, let me know, and I'll get on it after we wrap this up.

"My name is James. Ray was the name the Conclave branded me. Sorry but Varz, I'll move faster on my own. I can use invisibility to get past most creatures I meet. Gaz and Rach could use you. I need to get there now if I have any hope of getting out in time. James out." I activate invisibility and get moving to where West is.

"Godammit! Gaz, Rachel, get out! I am not gonna let James be the hero now and get killed. See you on the other side. Varz out."

As James pushes the broken door open, he grunts with the effort, breathing a sigh of relief as it finally gives way. Locating the lift to the Safe Zone, he ascends, keeping his finger on the trigger of his rifle. As the lift comes to a stop, he steps inside, surprised to find West standing next to Strelok, along with the Lazarus Guard already assembled. "I heard the message over the com, we're ready to finally leave this place." As they walked about the now lit hallways, a terrifying roar sounded through the corridor, a roar that James remembered vividly. Carnifex lumbered down the hall, running on it's knuckles like an ape, bellowing a challenge. The Lazarus Guard open fire as the two scientists run for cover, their shots failing to pierce it's bony plating. Leaping back, James fires his anti-material rifle through the remnants of one of the monster's eyes. blowing chunks of brain matter and bone through the back of it's skull. Carnifex charges blindly, knocking down the Guard like children's toys, trampling several underneath it's pulverizing fists. Backed into a corner, the huge mycomorphs grabs James, lifting the sniper above it's head, making to tear him in half. Howling in pain, a desperate idea takes hold in his mind. Shoving the barrel of the anti-material rifle into the hole he created, James fired twice, bursting Carnifex's like a rotten melon, scattering bone chunks and meat about the room. Dropping James, the creature flailed wildly about, smashing into walls with it's massive fists. Taking the opportunity, the survivors fled, making to rejoin the rest of the team.

After days of endless terror, the black fog of dread begins to lift, and a sliver of hope fills your hearts as you make for the Primary Gate, giddy with excitement. Gaz takes point, tearing a group of Vivisectors in half with his ripsaw as he runs onwards. Rachel and Jeremy dismantle a Centipede, hacking it's segments apart with their weapons as it momentarily blocks their path. After several minutes of running, Varz enters the same corridor, his face streaked with joyful tears, laughing as he joins you. James, West, Strelok, and the Lazarus Guard blast their way through hordes of the once-men, their bodies shredded by their focused firepower. Reaching the lobby, the Primary Gate blows inwards, scattering debris as it does so, and allowing for a handful of yellow-clad UN troops to enter the Facility, waving you on to the transport nearby. As your feet crunch through the thick layer of Canadian snow, and you gaze at the sky for the first time in days, you give a shout of triumph. Your laugh is cut short by a bowel-slackening howl torn from thousands of deformed throats. In a single roiling mass, the mycomorphs spill into the snow, their hungry jaws snapping at the surprised UN soldiers, their screams drowned by the maddening howl. As the pilot shouts for you to 'get on the f*cking bird!' you rush onboard, firing at the horrors that even now approach your position at an alarming pace. As Varz enters the dropship, the shuttle lifts off, slowly making it's way into the atmosphere. As the great steel doors begin to close, a sinewy, noose-like tongue wraps itself around his neck, pulling him backwards. Rachel attempts to sever the tongue with her knife, but yet another lasso entraps his leg, yanking him from the transport, dragging him back towards the Facility over the snow. He reaches out, clawing at the ground as the lynchers reel him in, his screams not of terror, but of rage, to have come so far only to have his life ended a hairsbreadth from salvation. The pilot shouts down your protests, retrieving Varz would end in the death of the rescue force, better one die than all of them. As the doors slam shut with awful finality, the pilot swears. Several matte-black ships marked with a great winged shield have arrived firing wildly upon the fleshy tide, sending plumes of bone and meat raining down upon the snow. As your ships swerves to avoid oncoming fire, the Conclave ships drop down, releasing scores of black-armored soldiers that charge with Facility with no care for their own lives. A voice warbles from the ship's com, telling the pilot to flee. Suddenly, a beam of impossibly bright light crashes down upon the Facility, punching a hole through the roof and boring into the crust. Waves of radiation turn any biological matter to jelly as their molecules are broken down. Your ship is nearly knocked out of the air by the aftershock, tossing it about like a rag-doll. You grip the side-rail, holding on for dear life as the dropship makes it's escape.

After several hours of silence, you finally touch down at an out of the way landing pad, surrounded by other UN troops. You step onto the ground, your feet leaden and dead. Your gaze is blank as you are prodded into a nearby tent. Inside sits a man wearing the uniform of a colonel, he prompts you to sit down. "Tell me everything you know about the Lazarus Facility."

I've had the idea for Laz in my head for a while now, I wanted, nay, NEEDED to run a roleplay involving the Lazarus Facility. Dakka gave me the platform to do so. I would like to thank each and every one of my players for making this thread the wonder that it is today, allowing me to tear them into bloody gobbets with flavor text without a complaint. Now that Laz is over, I'd like to pause and reflect. What was your most memorable experience? Also, if you would be so kind, write out a sort of epilogue for your character, how did they deal with the Lazarus Affair? Do they have nightmares or mental disorders because of it? That last part will be VERY important in Drowning in Darkness, so be clear. Oh, one more thing! Those of you with a character still alive at the end of the game ought to put "Survivor of the Lazarus Affair" in your sig, you earned it.

He knew one thing, he wouldn't be able to sleep, not until one man was dead, no, not a man, a voice. James got reinstated into the UN and continued to fight for the cause, hoping one day to be able to just have one shot at the man who ruined his life, after all, one shot was all he needed.

or as little as he could manage.
but when he did think about it, it was almost always about Dez.
they had grown close they had saved each others lives a few times.
