would a hex shaped watertower make sense?...I mean the force of water would not be too forgiving against all these corners and edges...

the ruin looks amazing... I like how you arranged all these pictures...and how the snipers wait for their target...

the roof looks amazing... the tin sheeted style would never spring to my mind... didn´t see this here often... but it looks amazing!!!

and I am eager to see what you up for the next round...!

My first thought was a watchtower and that you hadn't got around to adding windows and a ladder.

Good shape whatever it is.

It won't ever be in the grim darkness guys. My clever plan to get Cam to make some Infinity terrain has worked to perfection. Mwahahaha.

Vik, you're next, freund von mir.

It reminds me of the water towers we have all around here, like this

mesh would probably be better in my opinion... the PC takes away all the attention on your other details you made...mesh would allow see through...

I think the gantry may be overpowering the rest slightly due to the smallish size of the piece. Maybe using a mesh floor would be the way to go.....

Edit....Yeah like vik said Obviously I spent too long staring at my screen, not only did vik ninja me, but Cam got his reply in too

Camkierhi's other stuff blog. Currently in a galaxy far far away! @ 2014/08/11 22:48:34

Vik is dead on with the mesh. Last thing you need up that high is a surface for puddles or ice to form on.

Thank you guys, yup going with the mesh.

Cut out the perspex to form a frame...

Now to add mesh, only thing is not sure if my mesh will be strong enough. Looking at it and knowing it is bound for Infinity land, wondered if clear glass type surface might work, but will try mesh first.

Thank you all, very much appreciated. Been bit busy (RL) but trying to keep going.

Question, should I add a mid-rail?

Got many ideas for the new LoER comp, got to get going on that soon, trouble is I am 7 days in to a 19 day stint at work. Money will be great when it comes through, oh well.

Thank you for looking in.

Camkierhi's other stuff blog. Currently in a galaxy far far away! @ 2014/08/17 21:17:47

Post by: monkeytroll

Mid-rail is probably more 'realistic', but I think it looks good as is...might feel a little cramped with one added. Blu-tac one in place on a section and see what you think.....

Camkierhi's other stuff blog. Currently in a galaxy far far away! @ 2014/08/17 21:44:42

Post by: Dr H

Looking good.

I don't think the mid-rail is necessary, but as MT said, try one with blu-tack. A thin one.

I agree that it looks fine with out a mid rail, but no harm in a quick mock up so see how it feels. But the ladder does look awesome, i love the up and over part.

and last but not least.. that photobooth.

Post by: Camkierhi

Thank you so much guys for the feedback, very much appreciated.

Well the Infinity water tower is hopefully mid Atlantic.

Still got work to do on the house, but not getting a lot of hobby time at the moment, so starting work on the latest LoER Terrain Comp....

Sheet of MDF, with a mix of Dental Plaster and some yellow grit I got cheap....

Not bad texture but a bit rough, so sanded it down a little. (Note to self, dental plaster is VERY hard and does not sand easily!!)
Oh and added a little foam board to act as filler, then air drying clay and sculpted the pavement on....

Thoughts appreciated as always, sorry its a bit slow here at the mo but hope to have a bit of time soon.

Camkierhi's other stuff blog. Currently in a galaxy far far away! @ 2014/08/27 22:16:09

The pavement looks great. Are you intending the 'road' to be a coarse bitumen once finished? It looks like the road out the front of my house. Really wish the council would come and fix it, my cars suspension is having a rough time of it.

Camkierhi's other stuff blog. Currently in a galaxy far far away! @ 2014/08/27 22:36:44

Post by: Warboss_Waaazag

Perhaps a thin layer of air dry clay over your very rough road? In patches to resemble the crumbling remnants of old asphalt. Just a thought. Looks great so far otherwise.

Camkierhi's other stuff blog. Currently in a galaxy far far away! @ 2014/08/28 12:02:05

The pavement looks very cool, especially the broken and dislodged slab. what did you sue to scribe / sculpt the slabs?

Camkierhi's other stuff blog. Currently in a galaxy far far away! @ 2014/08/28 12:37:19

Road is looking good, great start.

And not that rough when compared to some I've had the "pleasure" to drive through, too!

Come drive on Washington DC roads sometime. Pothole central.

Dental plaster is a bit expensive for this? At least your road won't get potholes. It may get cavities though

Camkierhi's other stuff blog. Currently in a galaxy far far away! @ 2014/08/28 21:41:05

Post by: Camkierhi

Thank you all.

Ok update, got a bit done tonight.

First though...

@ MOrdain, I bought some sculpting tools really cheap ones off ebay a while ago now, pictured is what I am currently using on this bit.

Scribe type one for defining edges...

Wire brushy bit for adding texture to the surface of the slabs..

Wearing gloves because the air drying clay picks up finger prints like crazy.

So 24 hours on the first lot of clay is "crumbly" ie you can crumble bits off relatively easily...

Added a few more details...

Just put a dark wash on the road surface going to see what it looks like, may add a bit of road repair work yet, but I am actually pretty happy with the way it looks at the mo.

Please keep your thoughts coming...

Camkierhi's other stuff blog. Currently in a galaxy far far away! @ 2014/08/28 21:43:33

Post by: Archer

Are you planning this as a pure diorama piece or are you thinking you may add a few more road sections to make up a tabletop?

Any clue for what is going to be added to the road? I am already envisaging a burnt out wreck with the former occupants having a final stand against whatever it was they were running from.

Camkierhi's other stuff blog. Currently in a galaxy far far away! @ 2014/08/28 21:48:12

Post by: Camkierhi

Well trying to make it usable terrain, but will probably add a few ornamental pieces just for the comp....

Torn between exactly what you are saying and something way more dramatic, but we will just have to wait and see, after all the road is supposed to be the star here.

I like to sand my sculpted surfaces down with a fine grit to indicate frequent wear. I do the same with textured plasticard. It generates realistic depressions without overdoing it.

Camkierhi's other stuff blog. Currently in a galaxy far far away! @ 2014/08/29 19:54:17

I had a friend who made some road pieces out of plaster. Very nice stuff. Beautifully finished. Then a few fell off the shelf. Smash-O. So, he glued them back together, and used the cracks and missing pieces to simulate the wear and tear. Now these pieces looked even better. I'm not suggesting that you drop your piece, but if you do, no worries

Thank you.

I agree it is too smooth for a Imperial. Not sure might have another go later. If I take the wheels off, it could be Tau!?

@ Red Piece of styrene tube, dremel out lens "whole" put smaller tube inside. In this case a drinking straw. Fill with hot melt glue and try and smooth off.

And pics of the racer now....(pilot is not stuck in.)

Think I will have another go tomorrow at an Imperial type, this one gets put to one side for now. Will obviously be doing an Ork racer, yes the idea will be Ork V SM small crowd either side, dainty female in middle of road to start the race, grots hanging from the lights, maybe a few homebrew cheerleaders. Giving myself a lot to do, but I am fairly quick when I get wound up to it.

All your thoughts are very much appreciated.

Cheers for now.

The street looks great. I really like the painted circles of light from the lamp posts. Painted lighting always tickles my storytelling bones. Turns the piece into a nighttime scene even if its displayed in the light of day. Going to have to echo the chatter about debris and painted line weathering. A roadbed as distressed as that seems like it wouldn't have painted lines as crisp. In any case, it looks awesome overall.

This is awesome stuff all of it, however this hot rod racing is brilliant, love the Ork rod simple but effective strap a thruster to a chassis just fantastic ork logic.

The new imperial speeder is much more fitting and looks like a shortened space fighter from a certain 80s tv show.

Speeder looks great, and the leaf litter is a good touch

How much do you want the speeder to stand out against the road surface? Black probably wouldn't do that so much, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing.

I think it'd look good in a dirty white, but that's blatantly just my Star Wars/Galactica upbringing kicking in

A dark blue could be interesting....but I think it's open to most colours - although perhaps avoiding polka dot schemes

Looks great nice little speeder indeed just a thought the stand that you are using to raise the speeder from the road have you considered turning it into exhaust fumes ? you could stick some leaves around the bottom as if they are being blown away.

@ graven, LOL we will see, not sure yet.

@ WW, Agreed, just trying to nail down where I actually want it finally placed.

So getting close on these speeders time to move on shortly to the crowd etc, and still got a lot of tidying to do, as this comp is really tuff, better get the sloppy paint sorted.

From these pics I can see some areas I need to sort...

Imperial Speeder...

Ork Speeder...

Detachable as yet, so with or without?

Wreckage..

C & C welcome, going to come back to these, but moving on to other bits I want to get done, especially as after all the road is the star here, better make sure I get that finished.

I'd say without the ram for general purposes, you wanna go fasta and it'll just slow you down, you don't expect to be behind anybody when you've got the need for speed

Looking excellent too btw I like the colors on the speeder, and the mount is very nice, window details are slick.

Whilst I agree on stripped down for speed, always needs dakka. Just basic Love the Loser* but it still screams some kind of podracer wreckage required

Camkierhi's other stuff blog. Currently in a galaxy far far away! @ 2014/09/14 18:40:43

Post by: lone dirty dog

Firstly the burnt out wreck with graffiti is awesome and the speeder paint job look very fitting for a marine

Now the front plate although I agree with GrimDork that it would be heavy and slow you down, it could also work to balance the roadster.
What I mean is that the thruster would probably make the rod flip over on first launch so this could be a counterbalance to keep it level and on the road, however when has Orc mechanics ever been logical

Camkierhi's other stuff blog. Currently in a galaxy far far away! @ 2014/09/14 20:25:30

Post by: monkeytroll

I quite like the look of the front plate...although I agree in principle that it should really be stripped for speed, it strikes me as orky air-o-dynamix coming into play......tough call.

The imperial speedster looks great, nice choice of colours

The burn-out is fantastic, excellent weathering and great graffiti, top job

looking forward to seeing what insanity ensues in the crowd

well if this isn´t a development that brings me back from just mere lurking...

these two (three) speeders look amazing, love the fact that you restarted all over and came out better yet again!...

as for the ram... the ram as such looks very cool, but I think a ram on a speedster doesn´t make sense...tho...we are still talking orks here...no rules apply here...

the current coolness factor apart from the vehicles I think is the light show, the OSL is freakingly awesome!!!...and I love that you included a maintenance door to the lamp post...

all thumbs up my friend!

cheers, vik

It is not glued on so can yet decide to remove it or not.

Added a little detail, and stuck the wreck in place, after painting a shadow and some burnt pavement under it. (thanks Warboss_Waaazag.)

AWESOME seeing it all together really tells the story nicely, I think I would keep the front section on now it sort of completes the look and gives it a bit more shape.

You considered a flag bearer to start the race maybe a grot would fit the bill nicely, shame you don't have the squashed grot mini would have looked great on the road as road kill from a previous race.

Looking good, and the tattoos rock The back-bat is great, but I love the arm band one even better

And though the flag came out fine too - nice checkers -, its thickness keeps nagging at the back of my head. Maybe even more so when all other details have been so well taken take of, but that's your fault, not mine . I see it is a separate piece right above the hand, so an alternative might not demand redoing the whole model, too...

Some thinner material, maybe, for the base? Minimum gauge styrene, if available? Or something else? (I've used X-ray films before for banners, for example: worked fine, and it responds well to heat forming too) Or actual fabric (something close-knitted, so not to overdo the texture in scale), shappen by soaking in PVA and letting dry?

Probably just a nitpicking exercise, but wanted to put it forward just in case. Either way, it'll end up a wonderful piece.

@ Grim. Thank you.
@ Vik. You guys take me places I never thought I would go so it's your fault.
@ Desubot. Both.
@ Shas. Thank you sir. ( I actually have a couple thousand points worth of the silly buggers.)
@LDD. Send me the cleaning bill.
@ Waaazag. Indeed again I would say both.
@ Red. I can not be held responsible for the wifes shopping preferences, mostly make shandy with it. Which is probably worse.
@ Gits. You only just worked that out!
@ OMN. Thank you.

OK boring update tonight...
Cleaned up a bit and stuck up a couple shelves, (think I might have to start selling some of this junk.)

Then..We have all seen these before..

Thought I would do some other bits to add as scatter...
Take some cardboard, and roll it up.

Cut to length..

Add a base..

Make some lids.

Score the sides and "crumple" the cans.

Next Paint. Prime black, coat of chainmail, then stipple with Hobgoblin Orange.

Wash of orange/red ink.

Dry brush with, chainmail.

Add some details.

And there we are.

Sorry I know it is boring, no pompom's. Thank you for looking in.

Please, stop! How much more are you gonna add to that?

Even your boring update is great! (and actually, I had not checked in before because of the pompoms, so . Can't see those again before bedtime, afraid I won't be able to sleep again...)

Nice workspace shot too, funny thing about globalization, so many same things around the bench (barring the paints, not even close to that myself!) halfway around the ball! well, come think of it, shouldn't be so surprised... me posting in English, in a war-games forum, commenting on a UK-made game...

Except for actual, physical mail (no news from the postman yet, ), it has grown smaller lately...

Waiting for the complete build pics soon.

I like the green... if you can keep that hue that way it is a nice new take on the mantis theme...

the preying mantis arms are a cool idea... tho I have a slight issue with the working mechanisms for making it convincingly a threat for others rather than towards himself...fighting that way is still very hazardous?... I like the way you used the chaos chainswords... always a cool choice there... but I am wondering wether a pincer like chainsword setup would work better?... just an idea that came to my mind...

Thanks Graven.

So I need your help here, anyone see anything I am missing, these are not quite final shots but very very close.

Suppose I better explain him first. So my thinking was a veteran of many years service, expert in close combat as ammo is getting low, he's a big strong lad, and is even taler than the standard genetic freak, he's had some converted chainswords put on to give a little extra oompf! He grabs you in those fists you are sliced and diced before you know it. I went for a "chitinous" feel to the armour, it's ceramite so it aint going to rust, and he keeps it maintained as you would have to. He carries lots of gear on him, and has lots of pouches to gather "materials" after the battle, to keep his gear up to scratch. He has many battle honours and has even got a nice little relic hanging from his waist.

I have done two different bass at the moment, a battle base, and a decorative base.

The battle base is a standard 40mm. Should be OK for gaming, although you could maybe say a bit tall.

The scenic base tells a bit more of a story, so in this he has just "teleported" in , and well being a terminator I could not really help myself. The stick in the corner is the Homing beacon thingy.

And a close up.

So like I said please could you point out anything I am missing before I finalise these, I just noticed he is a bit wonky on the scenic base, not quite flat footed so going to have to sort that out for a final photo shoot.

Thank you all for looking and your support.

Very nice.....like the little knee pad mantis face, and the teleport base is a great idea.

Only thing I'd say is maybe a touch of metal on the joints for the chainswords - but that's more a personal thing.

Not only have you finished your model, painted the model, and based it... you've built a scenic base to display him on... and I've only just stuck the arms on mine!

Anyway...
"I need you clothes, your boots and your motorcycle... nah, forget it..." Buzzz *Arrgh* "Die heretic"

Good job, Cam.
Great job on the face, very "veteran" look to him.

Only thing I'm not sure about is the colours of the relic thing. I'm sure you have your reasons, but I'm not getting it?

Thank you all as always guys, very much appreciated.

Been a bit slow this week really, bit tired. Did start one of the many ideas I have for the new LoER terrain competition. The theme is Fence it in! So anything along the lines of fencing, walls, etc.

So I started with a bit of this...

Bit of buggering around with a knife and some milliput and this...

Couple washes and here I am at...

Next up at the mo, is a big and very serious question....

Space Marines, how do people feel about Camo Marines? At the moment I have a modest Smurf army, but would consider repainting them, and I have a bug for painting them camo, with accents of the chapter colour instead! I know I have seen on here at least one camo scheme, and like it. To me it makes sense that any army would have camo and not bright colours that stand out a mile off, so is there a reason for them being so coloured? The way a lot of people paint them so dirty and chipped up these days they are nearly camo half the time anyways!

Anyways here is the LR at the mo, but stopping and thinking of a quick re-prime and going camo.

Thanks for looking in, and please feel free to comment, especially on the camo subject.

short answer to camo marines... in my humble opinion...do iiiiiitttt!!! I think if you ever have some spare money... get yourself some upgrades from anvil industries... their spec ops stuff is the coolest stuff for any marine player around the world methinks... and makes SM cool again...even if you´re not a eight year old anymore

I have seen quite a lot of camoed marines in the www... even tiger marines...in orange and black... and they were not a funny army... they looked serious! also real camo colours like browns and greens I think would make marines look way cooler than the over used bretonian knights on steroids look... so go for it!!!^^

(and don´t get me wrong here, your mantis warrior is an amazing piece!... the whole terminator homage you did with the scorched ground and the homing device is such a cool idea... I think everyone should nick that idea for their respective armies!)

what else?...ah yes... that landraider looks amazing... have you casted some of the details there? looks like that... it is a very good looking and very convincing scratch build...a grace for every marine player.

and then finally...the wall...looks amazing... tho I have a question... didn´t MT ask for not ruined walls?... or did I misread the rules here?... I like the vines immensely... and the fact that you choose a modern wall structure overrun by plantlife is a guarantee for a cool piece already!...how many more pieces will you add to the project by the way?... weren't we supposed to build two sections of minimum of 12 inches (30cm each???)...

also...good to see you back matey, been wondering what kept you being here^^

cheers, and best wishes to you and your loved ones

vik

Thanks Vik,

Definately leaning toward camo. Raider is re-primed white as we speak.

Not sure on the wall, I will be doing more of it, but I might go a different way all together not sure yet.

For now just done one section to see what I think...

Thoughts?

always love your graffiti work, especially against the Ultramarines, even though I am sorely thinking of repainting all my guys as smurfs . That's what I get for reading "unremembered empire". Nice wall by the way, bet it looks great next to the hotel.

Apparently there's a thing called "Reasonable Marines".

The GirlPainting or whoever it is doing her take.

Maybe they don't feel like they *need* camo... but most soldiers tend to wear it so why not marines

Wall looks cool.

Thank you all.

@ Theo, Got to have a bit of fun hey! Funny that I am about to repaint me smurfs.
@ Grim, Had a look and yup god stuff. I am pretty sold on the camo lot, but have a look and let me know what you think.
@ Gits, glad you think so.
@ GamesEtc. Don't put yourself down dude, I am no painter, (loose every painting contest I enter.) But your work is great, and we are all still learning, and improving so don't you dare give up, you are what the comps about, come give us a run for our money.

Now played around with a bit of paint tonight...

Trial for Camo Ultramarine...

And the LR, just basecoated really.

Thoughts are very much appreciated.

Huh, pretty cool. It's some form of desert camo right?

It looks pretty effective and the one blue shoulderpad is iconic to the point that I still assume he's an Ultra.

Hey Cam, I tend to use a darker base color regarding camo patterning, and also, the one base patter is needing to be lighter than the inner splinter, once they get dirty washed, it will show proper.

Just thoughts to help out.

Good work on the wall and well done on the LR build, shape looks spot on.

Cam-o' ( ) looks good. Nice subtle contrast will help the models stand out on a table (as in, the camo' is not too good). The blue areas work well.

Thanks guys, hoping by the time I get done weathering it down when it is fully built, it will look the business.

Started in on the sponsons today, still ongoing, but here is a progress report.

Square rail fits over round so turnable.

Probably magnetise the weapons onto the square. as you can see I am varying away from "true" design a bit here, but then I am always doing that.

Any help thoughts you guys want to lay down here is greatly appreciated. If you see me in trouble please shout. It will hopefully help and inspire others.

The Camo scheme looks cool, I agree that a stronger contrast between the base and the stripe is needed though.

In regards to why Marines don't use Camo (except maybe the scouts) is tied to the whole Medieval Heraldry thing about not being afraid of identifying yourself. But that of course was during a period of time where Battle Cannons and the like didn't exist.....

Thanks guys, OK so they are showing how brave they are by standing out like sore thumbs!

Sponson fitted..

Also Front mounted gun housing....

You will also notice I am attempting to darken the camo, not sure at the mo, but that is only one wash coat.

Thanks.

A round peg in a square hole? Sounds orkier than SM, I'd say...

Looking good, and working movable parts are always a plus.

Nicely coming along camo scheme too

I think Gitsplitta hit is on the proverbial head though, what is the competition looking for?

Been meaning to do a proper catch here for ages. What a blog, dude. Absolutely love what you did with those Nid bits to start with, wish I'd seen that sooner! Hotel Kalif-Orknia was outstanding too. Man, just everything. And it's so nice to see you focus so hard on improving and really listening to what everyone has to say.

Now I'm back up to speed I'll be around much more often.

Thank you so much guys.

The competition is titled "Wall me up, Fence me in!"

So the idea is a fence or wall or such, upto and including everything to laser fences. Which some nutters are attempting. Whicjh will be amazing if they pull it off.

At this stage you see walls, but this is me here, Of course I will do fences and mixture wall fences, and probably some huge dio, (take a bit of notice here) Thinking squig pen, fighting pit type thing. Taking the "fence me in" bit to mean fence in something. Of course the squigs I have ordered will get some homebrew company, and probably a victim or two.

But the fencing and walls will be detachable and usable for gaming, as linear terrain.

Nice work.
Like the skeleton "carvings".

The bullet holes could do with a little alteration.
A couple of the sections look like someone got carried away with a machine gun, but avoided hitting the thicker bits, if you see what I mean? Someone shooting at a wall (or at least someone else near a wall) is not going to hit the wall so "cleanly" in the middle of flat sections. It could be concentrated into one corner of a section and could chip edges off etc.. More random, less symmetric.

Looking great. The niches above all, though all is good!

Not totally sure about the wire fence over the the broken wall piece, something more "added on" (lacking a better way to describe it), as in less permanent/not so well fixed would maybe be more fitting to top a ruined wall: rolled barbed or bladed wire, perhaps?

(I'd be hard to sink the poles into the wall as the look they are there).

This is what a reinforced concrete wall looks like after 250 7,62 bullets shot from a distance of about 150 meters hits it and that wall is about 20cm thick too.
i thought you could use it for some inspiration.

and that's me in the pic too btw, the proud shooter.

Concrete walls are tricky things. With them, there is no such thing as overkill, only just enough kill.

@Shas, it took 5 50 round belts to do that. but ofc they were connected to make a 250 round belt. but i could have done alot more damage to it if i could have realised after the third burst that the black spot in the middle of the block were actually a hole.. so i basically just threw about 100-150 bullets straight through the hole.

and red, do you really think that we are worthy of such knowlage? :O
