"HEY EVERYONE, AN OLD MAN IS TALKING!"
There was a website a while back that did Retro WD reviews, reviewing the issue of WD that came out 10 years ago. Always fun to look back.
Well this summer I found Noble Knight Games ( www.nobleknight.com) who specialize in OOP stuff and have a pretty good inventory of old WDs for like $5 each.
So I'm starting here with WD 93! September 1987!
Note, if you were not born when this issue came out you must note that fact in your reply. It's a rule.
WD 93 is from the time when GW was transitioning from being an importer of stuff like D&D and Battletech to producing their own games. So it has articles for Call of Cthulhu, Middle Earth Role Playing and AD&D. It also has the premier of a new game, something called Warhammer 40,000 AD
The inside cover also has an ad for some new Warhammer fantasy force called the Skaven by some whippersnapper named Goodwin.
We're also introduced to some guy named Copplestone.
Marc Copplestone of course sculpted most of the RT IG and marines and now has his own shop selling near future and historical figures:
http://www.copplestonecastings.co.uk/
And what may well be the first ever 40k cartoon
(a noble click embiggens the smallest image)
Then some ads for GW models... some things never change
Y'see back in the old days dwarfs used to use wood.
Coming in part 2, that Warhammer 40k games I was mentioning...

Hahaha, those warhammer 40,000 soldiers on the cover are hilariously bad. Oh look it's a starship trooper clone. That game will never take off.

With what you've been waiting for, the dynamic debut of WARHAMMER 40,000 AD ROGUE TRADER!
Things start off dramatically with a full-page spread of well...
Nothing?
Heckuva nice logo I guess.
And you kids today complain about no content in WD...
Turn the page and you get...
A tiny text box!
Let's see that up close
Ah, now that's some deathless prose... When Peter Jackson makes the Warhammer 40k movie that darn well better be the first lines said.
And without further commentary, the full text and some art from 'What is Warhammer 40,000?'
The picture that inspired an army...
Our first Inquisitor Obiwan Sherlock Clousseau (wonder why he never got a 54mm version)
And in our next exciting installment we'll have some of the miniatures from this excting new game.

& we're back with part III!
We've seen the dark grimness of the 401st century, but what about the minis?
Well 10 UKPs will get you 30 plastic marines or Ork raiders
Or you can go for lead ones, 2.50 for 3 or 4
In these early blood angels you can see early version of the gold officers' armor and death company
And the original land raider
In our last exciting installment we'll see the results of the original Golden Demons...

I still have my actual first purchased issue of White Dwarf, Issue #90 and it's next 20 issues. It's great looking back at some of the fluff articles and still seeing some of the same stuff. The first appearance of the Ravenwing was great, alongside the bullock jet cycles

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die. |

I started buying WD in 1990 but I've been buying up old issues at conventions, I've got several in the 40's.
Almost 2 years ago I laid them out on the floor and stood on the table to get this pic:
This is great Kyoto.

I love this picture with my peepee. Whenever I peruse my copy of RT, I always gander at this pic and think about what GW missed out on when they removed any individuality from space marines.
I mean look at those two sitting in the bar! "Smash the empire" spray painted across the wall, two marines sitting enjoying a beer in hopes of perhaps busting some heads.
Heady times. GW should look at their roots more often. They might get an idea of how to save their games.

Actually I hear a lot about Reagan of late, largely from Mitt invoking him as a shining icon of conservatism. But this picture is superb, and is being sent to many non-gamers as we speak
Of the models, an Ultimate Dream of mine is to have all of the ancient renegade models, happily painted up and kicking loyalist butt on the table. 10,000 years old, indeed!

I was four when this issue came out, but I was first taken to Little Wars(which still exists, albeit larger and in a different location in the BR) about a year later. Didn't get anything, but I was entranced by the little toy soldiers. About 5-6 years later, I stepped into Galactic Games in NOLA and haven't looked back(much to the chagrin of my parental units).
