As I am getting back into the hobby and building and increasing my ork army, I need something to transport it. I have a KOS army with lots of trukks, battlewagon, looted wagons plus around around 110+ ork boyz. So I need a pretty large transport. Right now I have everything in about 3 of those Gamesworkshop carrying cases, but to lug 3 of those around is a pain.

Looking around the web, it seems the Sabol Army transport is popular, does anyone have any reviews for this? Does anyone else with a large army of both vehicles and infantry use something different? How big a transport would you guys recommend for a larger model army? Ideally, I would like to carry one large case around instead of 3.

Thanks for your feedback.

I use the Sabol Motor Pool bag for my vehicles. It has ONLY my vehicles in it. It's large but not overly bulky and isn't too tall. Off the top of my head I think it has 6 sets of Sabol foam in there ranging from 2 inch to 4 inch thick. It has also an outside zipper pocket for books/papers/templates/etc as well as an inside slider pocket. Also along the outside it has two "belt-pouch" style pockets for dice, measuring tape, etc

My only gripe about it is the lack of a shoulder strap though I plan on changing that. It does have two handles though so it's not impossible to carry, don't get me wrong. The GW cases don't have shoulder straps either, so carrying it and a couple GW cases can be uncomfortable.

I have the standard Sabol Army Transport with 4x1" trays, 1x3 1/2 inch and 1x4 in tray. I can take 3 Leman Russes (one with sponsons), 2 Hellhounds and about 110 infantry with each IG model getting his own space on the 1 " tray and the HW teams in the Hellhound tray. Everything is a nice tight fit and nothing jostles around whne moving, has been solid and held up for a couple of years. The best things is by just switching out any extra trays you can take whatever you need that particular day. The front pouch will hold about 4-5 codex, haven't tried putting a BGB in it before since I carry the BFM mini book with me. Pouches hold dice and markers. Was 60 pucks at Warstore + I purchased that 3 1/2 inch tray (so I have a few extra one inch to mix and match). Mine does have the should strap.

I'm going to get a tackle box for my Marines since there are less and they take up more room in the Sabol style trays, I think I will be magnetizing the bases so they stand upright inside (wish I had a picture, one of the other guys has been using cooking pans the height of the models inside with no sliding).

I like the magnet idea, but for a smaller army. I guess i'll look into the Sabol Transport and one with a shoulder strap. Thanks for your help!

I use a sabol army transport. it works very well for my vehicles (TAU). I'm less impressed with it for troops, especially my pile o' kroot.

My gaming group has started using magnetized bases to transport guys. If your guys are uniform height (and not too tall) you can combine the magnetized bases with the army transport foam trays. Just rip out all the foam in the middle and glue some sheet metal into the bottom. This is nice - lets you have the advantages of the army transport (strap, decent bag, pockets, good for vehicles) and gives you more density when transporting a lot of same-height dudes (gaunts, most IG, my kroot).

Sabol for me. I have a bunch of them and I buy extra trays to store my painted mini's.

A few of the people in our group have sabol cases, and they're very good, especially for storing tanks. I tend to use the big plastic tubs and strong fiber boxes that I've had for a while now to store tanks. I have plastic boxes with drawers and the big double-sized GW cases for regular minatures.

I 'spose I'll get sabol cases eventually, just not now.

Do they work well for oddly shaped armies like the Tyranid? I use a home made carrier and need more room...

Yes they do. I put 4 Carnies in a 4" tray and there is no problem.

I use plastic stackable Sterilite tubs for transporting my tanks. If you just cut two pieces of foam one for the top and one for the bottom it works quite well and they're cheap too (buy 'em at Wal Mart for a few bucks).

For the infantry sized models I have also found that Wal Mart has these really compact four tray tackle boxes that are capable of being hung on the wall. They are basically a plastic cage that holds the four trays so they take up a very minimal amount of space and the plastic is just sturdy enough that it doesn't feel flimsy. I really can't recommend them enough I've bought something like four of them since I discovered them. My only complaint is that for metal models you need to insert a small piece of foam into each compartment to keep your guys from bouncing around. The foam from blister packs works perfect for this though.

I tried to find a picture on Wal Mart's web site (and a few other web sites) and I didn't have much luck so your mileage may vary as to whether you can even find these things locally.

Sabol cases are cool, except that they don't use any kind of standard Foam sizes, so if you want different foam for a different army, you're pretty much stuck buying from them.

I got a Skirmishpack from www.charonproductions.com, GW was apparently seeling them for awhile at one point. They've got slightly more capacity than the big GW hardshell cases. (same doublewide area for foam, but can fit about 1 more tray deep) Use the same foam as the GW cases, and when you order it, if you ask nicely, he'll put whatever design you want on the front of the case. They also come in "scoutpack" which is one foam tray wide, and "Battlepack" which is 3 foam trays wide. (must be for people who play 'nids in Apocalypse without monstrous creatures :p)

This looks good for transporting things on an airplane and
suchlike.

And this looks good for storage in the house if you don't
have the shelving or don't care to display minis.

I use the Sabol stuff.

I got in pre-Sabol, so I have *several* Chessex figure cases. Each can hold over 100 smaller (i.e. IG / SoB-sized) models. They're hard-shelled, so they stack nicely and do a good job of protecting things as long-term storage. I can carry up to 4 cases in a squared duffel bag, along with books and such. The only problem is that you can't use them easily for things more than 1.9" tall, particularly vehicles.

If I had to do it all over, I'd probably have gone Sabol.

In the mean time, I'm making a vehicle cases of my own to carry my IG tanks.

I have GW cases for infantry. I have one Small Sabol case for some tanks. If I was still caring enough about miniature games to actually spend money on it (instead of buying enough cards for a 5th M:TG type 2 deck off of eBay) I'd probably get some more Sabol cases for vehicles.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

Those cases are awesome.

I wrap my tanks (Eldar Skimmers) in t-shirts and carry them in a grocery bag. If I'm going to a real event I use a GW bag or a backpack.

No problems, but no pointy bits, either.

Nice thing about those infantry cases is you can just leave your painted stuff inside until you need to take it out again.

Haven't found one yet. You could try contacting them to see
if they have any US vendors lined up.

I just looked the Sabol cases people were talking about to see what those were. Irk. I had a bad experience with one of those Army Transport cases of theirs. When it was in the trunk of my car, summer heat apparently resoftened the glue that had held the foam in place, and glued my figs into the tray. Lost strips of paint when I went to remove them, so now I avoid those cases myself.

I use a tool box with some cheap foam from Canadian Tire (Canuckastan hardware/general stuff store). It's served me better than any expensive dedicated model transports for nearly eight years.

If I could figure out where to get decently inexpensive eggshell foam, I'd give that option some consideration myself. As it stands, whenever I've considered a toolbox, I've always found myself at a loss for how to do the foam.

Currently I use just a regular GW case but it only fits about 1000pts of my Tau, so I'll be upgrading soon. Originally I had bought a huge toolbox(an actual toolbox, not one like Aduro's) which was on sale for $20 at Canadian Tire, and then I went to Michael's(massive craft supply store) and bought several sheets of soap foam(I think that's what it's called). I never actually got around to carving out the foam for my models, which is good because now I've come up with something new.

I'm going to use a soccer bag and steal tomguycot's idea with the stackable sterelite tubs and just put them inside the soccer bag. It's more than safe enough, easily customizable, and best of all it's extremely stealthy. I've even got my name on the soccer bag from when I played competitive.

I use this incredibly cheap soft yellow foam they had. It comes in big strips of a foot by an inch, so I made a card frame that fell into the toolbox, put some cardboard in that as a floor, then ran the strips up and across on a per-miniature basis. I can make space for forty troopers in twenty minutes and I've never damaged one, and I can stack the sheets five high letting me transport two hundred men in a single, 30 dollar box. The original hinges worried me so I replaced them with steel ones, but other than that the box is unmodified. Yes, it's a huge bloody box, no, it doesn't matter. I actually bough a second one when my guard army got out of control big, allowing my to carry almost all of my entire demi-regiment in my hands! Thank god they were all plastic.

When I started my armoured company for imperial guard (when I say armoured company, I mean it. Understand when I finished with my guard army I could technically field thirty two tanks not including transports) I got a second box, this one a repurposed "universal heavy tool carrier" originally intended to carry chainsaws and the like. I can put my entire armoured company in it, and it even has compartments for the turrets from my russes and the cannons from my laser tank destroyers.

We have a "container" store here where I found one of those huge plastic cases for dirt cheap. It looks like the GW case, only no Imperial Eagle on it, and it's about 2-2.5 times bigger. I think it was meant to transport large camera or audio equipment. Then at the last gun show, I picked up a huge piece of dark foam for about $15 and cut it up. Perfect for my largest army (Ultramarines). I bought a case similar to the GW one at Games Day 98 in Baltimore (they didn't make their own case back then) and I found another of the exact same case used at the local gun store. Those are currently storing my Eldar. I have an actual rifle case (big enough to fit two or three rifles in it) for my Empire army, Then I did the metal briefcase looking toolbox deal with extra foam for my Tyranids though they're growing bigger so I'll have to get something new for them soon. The rest of my odds and end figures, half completed armies, etc are all stored in plastic containers.

For anybody wanting the foam for a case, but don't want to pay GW, Reaper, or anybody else's prices for them, I get mine kind of in bulk at gun shows, but I've found this is a pretty good website if you just want to order it off the net.

Hope this helps whoever may be looking.

A word of warning for anyone thinking about doing this. I know two different peole that have had large amounts of miniatures stolen because they left them in their car inside of either a pistol case or rifle case. I suppose that it is just way too tempting for thieves (I also bet they were quite disappointed when they opened them).

Second on the pistol case. Cheap, easily accept differing sized minis. Just stick them in the trunk of your car.

If cheap is what your after you can simply buy foam trays and pack it into a comic book box. The width is the same and there's an extra inch or two on the length making it easy to get the foam out. On the plus side the boxes usually only cost around $3-4 and have handles. On the down side, well, they look like they only cost $3-4.

I had the same thing happen. Thankfully most of them were unpainted, but it was annoying. I lost a few limbs from my figs that are now a permanant part of the sabol case. Not only that the foam board that the foam walls are glued to used to be if not still are pretty damn hard so your figs often break in the case if you drop it or anything unexpected happens. Now I just get shotgun cases for small to medium sized models (size of a dread or smaller) and use shoe boxes or Lanr Raider boxes for my larger models, and of course wrap them in t-shirts. Why bothe rpaying for a case?
