Anybody posted about this stuff yet?
http://belloflostsouls.blogspot.com/2008/06/news-games-day-canada2008.html
Hi guys,
Here are some pics and quick news coming out of Games Day Canada:
Minis
First of all, check out the pics brought to us by an intrepid BoLS operative of the Assault on Black Reach Marine Captain and Ork Warboss. Word is that the others pics of the Blood Angel, Space Wolf, Tau, and Runts minis will be direct order minis available in July.
News
Jervis was present and there was confirmation that work on Codex Imperial Guard is underway, but not much else. There is also talk within the studio of expanding the playtesting cycles which go into codices (yay!).
Apparently to the shock of all, he brought up Squats!!! The crux of the conversation was that GW has a 5-year plan to hit every army that was not addressed in 4th and bring them up to speed for 5th Edition. Apparently Witchhunters & Daemonhunters is towards the tail end of that period. Once that is finished, if GW can spare design resources (which they cannot do now), they may look towards re-introducing the Squats as a completely re-imagined new xenos race, with a total break from their Rogue Trader original concept (so perhaps the Demiurge concept).

Okay, that's just comedy.
But then, maybe that's an indication that they're finally going to get around to doing an Alien Hunters 'dex - if they have the resources, natch.

Interesting that they spoke about them, but I expect the chances that we see squats again to still be roughly 0%, +/- 1%.

I don't think that would be necessary. It would be easy enough to explain away the fluff of them all being eaten: space dwarves are such a silly concept that even the Tyranids couldn't swallow them!

I'd honestly think the reimagined "dwarves" and the Hrud (Skaven) along with maybe some kind of "big" race (Ogre analogs but not Ogryn) would be possibilities if they want an army to each have a pseudo analog in fantasy as least as far as tactics go.

A Codex mercenaries of various races, rogue/traitor imperial forces and mutants one can take as mercenaries, like Kroot and the Traitor guard, would be nice. If the rules were set down for some of exotic Xenos but no set image was made, then you could reuse some models from WHFB - this could provide some introduction to WHFB for 40k fans and get them into it.

Dude, why cann't they just die already??????
Anyone who played back then knows they were a falvorless army and just plain dumb!
You will cry, Kinghammer but "They had bikes!" "But they had Exo-Armor" "They had cool wargear"
People need to take off their rose colored glasses and except that they had horrible models and their rules were a mix of guard and marines. They have not had a list in 10 years!

But they were cool.
And I had a smallish force (30 odd models) of them back when that was a good sized army and even had 15 or so chaos squats.
Unfortunately so much of thier iconography was shipped off to other armies (space wolves for the runic angle and KOS orks for the biker brotherhood) it is definitely a must that they are reimagined.
Problem for GW is that no matter what they call them they will always be squats to old timers.
BTW anyone else over GW giving characters bolter/ combibolter + power weapon/other CC super weapon?

It does get a little old seeing the Bolter/Combi + ________. You know it is old when the '91 GD model is a Space Marine Capt w/ Bolter and Powerfist. It looks like you can put in another chest on the Assault on Black Reach Captain.

Squats had little in common with Space Marines although the comparison with Imperial Guard is fair, Id say they were between Imperial Guard and Orks. The Bob Olley one piece sculpts were nice and the other multi part sculpts were only let down by the low quality of the plastic components. Bike and Exo-armoured squads only showed up in big battles anyway.
I'm not sure that I'm bothered that they'll bring them back (if they do). Five years is long enough for them to change their mind, time enough to be wanting to release 6th edition 40k.
I'm not holding my breath, there's an Imperial Guard codex on the way first and maybe they'll get round to doing Inquisition sooner rather than later.

If the example set by Codex: Dark Angels holds true, Space Marine characters will be able to have a bolt pistol, a CCW or special melee weapon, and a storm bolter/combi-weapon all at the same time. I guess the "holstered pistol" will actually count for something now.

Reading between the lines, it looks like the planned life of fifth edition is five years. That is, they're talking about a five year cycle to go through all the codices before revising the rulebook again. If they get through the codices quick enough they'll have time before the rules revision to release a new army.
Le grognard - Jervis may or may not be with GW, it doesn't matter. Corporate policy and release schedules continue on regardless of the presence of one guy. The bigger question is on whether you can expect corporate policy to go five years without a complete revision. Looking at GW's history the answer is no.

The big question is whether GW will exist in five years. If 5th edition breaths new life into the game they maybe will, if they drop the ball, then they may well go under. Things are pretty finely balanced financially for them at the minute.

GW has been at this longer than anyone, and they have more safety nets than most, as well as very valuable and appealing IP. Barring a collapse of the industry, I don't think that GW and 40K are really going anywhere.

Squats? Hmm, wouldn't hold my breath on that one. I was never a huge fan - although their vehicles in the Epic level games were pretty sweet.
Obviously the 40k Universe gives limitless scope in regards to creation of races/armies, but in gaming terms a new force would have to be aimed at a specific tactic or design to really be worth while - i.e. Tau went for the anime approach combined with fairly specific gaming focus. I'd personally like to see more work done on reintroducing individual creatures (Ambulls please!) in deathworld/Catachan style scenarios, using some of the beasties from 40k history. Would be good to expand scenario opportunities with some nice models/modelling opps rather than throwing a whole new army in, particularly if it isn't well supported.

I think if "dwarf-lookalikes" return, they'll definitely have a far different look and feel than they did back in the day. After all, GW killed the Squats because they felt that they were ill-defined, they didn't like the way the army looked or played, and they couldn't think of any easy way to revitalize the concept. If GW is bringing them back, I think it's safe to say that the design team has some new ideas to bring to the table.

They aren't that finely balanced. While their performance has been poor, they've still got strong financial health.
