So, I've just got back into things from like, 2nd edition or so I believe.
I have one question: Where did the Solitaire go? I'm utterly disappointed he's no longer in the Eldar codex, despite being mentioned.
Sadzors over here.

Actually, there is more than one Solitaire in existence. They're occasionally scattered about and are rare to Harlequin standards. That one just happened to be around and out-dance the Masque.

The Solitare was presented as a sort of enigma. He/She was a harlequin who was actually promised to Slannesh's sandwich box. As such, they were the only Harlequin able to play the part of she who thirsts during a performance. I dimmly recall something about the laughing god (a sort of cross between Fred Astiare, Moses and Peter Kaye) snatching back the souls of some harlequins before Slannesh could get them. Not sure if this extended to the Solitare or not.
Just from memory, WD 134 (ish) it's got a reddish border around the cover, which is the artworkwork from the original boxed set.

It is actually WD105:
"Solitares (arebennian) are outside the masque and roam the universe alone, occasionally joining a masque for a single performance or battle as the fancy takes them. They are the only harlequins who can play the role of Slannesh in the great harlequin masterwork known as the Dance; Various stories exist of other individuals who have tried and have been driven mad by the experience. They almost always fight as individuals.
Among the Eldar it is said that Solitares are harlequins who have been touched directly by the Great Harelquin* and have his insiht inot the fall of their race and the nature of the universe. A Solitare might live amongst the Eldar (or even another race) for years or decades. And there are many rumours and folk tales telling of Eldar who have met a Solitare and later realised that this was the Great Harelquin himself. Solitares represent the very pinnacle of the Harlequin ideal and are formidable foes."

Yeah, shame they don't do rules for the Solitaire anymore. In 2nd edition Codex, they had one of the best statlines in the game. They were kind of the Harlequin equivalent of Imperial Assassins and needless to say, kicked arse.

They still pop up from time to time:
I think that the TF Damocles Gulf Campaign allowed Eldar players to include a solitare.
The Harlequin in DOW is literally on her own; and minces foes in a solitare like fashion.

Past fluff has the Soltaires as "Souless" like Pariahs. Slaneesh technically owns their souls, so they can play Slaneesh in the dance. Because Eldar take on the aspects of the character they play, and soltaires play "Slaneesh" they can outdance the Masque.
In the latest codex it mentions that the Laughing God finds new ways to trick Slaneesh into returning some Soltaire's souls, and that is what pilots Harliquin Wraithlords.

Any particular color scheme for the Solitaire, I'm converting a Lilith for my Harlequin troupe with the idea that she's the solitaire. I know, no rules, but I think It's gonna look cool. I have this crazy idea about a blue gold Harlequin themed army. Already have 2 full squads of them waiting for paint.

In the original articles, they were just bright and spangly, like the rest of them. I now think that if my painting skills were up to the standard to allow me reproduce anything like the paint job on any of the eavy metal harlequins, then a dull, matt black assassin lurking at the edges would be, er, kool.
Another alternative would be to give them a slanneshi colour scheme. And perhaps the head of Lucius as a football.

I thought the laughing god was the Deciever, or am i Missing somthing?
if they are the deciever that makes no sense cause the c'tan don't understand the warp... so how would it snatch souls from Slaanesh?
|
The Imperium of Man is able to traverse the Warp with difficulty when their Emperor concentrates from his golden life support machine and lights the way. Unfortunately, because the Emperor has the attention span of the average 5-year-old Pokemon fanboy, this means that many an unfortunate Imperial ship has had the WTF WHERE'D THE LIGHTS GO experience, which in the Warp is invariably fatal. |

Matte black? HHmmm, Thats close to what i had in mind. Was thinking either black&white mime of death or something inspired by a friend of mine Who performs at renaissance festivals as a black&red Harlequin. I like the second better because of how it would contrast with the (Altoic/Iyanden) blue&gold. Lol on the lucius idea. Don't know if i'll do it but i like the visual.

Sgt Roadkill - That is just leg pulling. The deceiver figure, painted up as a harlequin, makes for a what might be termed "a kool mini". And the idea that the whole Eldar race (crafties, darkies, harlies and exes) is being deceived by the C'Tan has a certain wry humour. But as you have pointed out; unless the deceiver has deceived the codex author, 'he' cannot perceive the warp etc etc. Besides which; the laughing god comes from the pre-fall Eldar* pantheon, the inimical foes of the C'Tan. However, the idea of a senario or campaign where the deceiver is posing as the laughing god in order to set the Harlequins against their erstwhile allies does have mileage, but only if there's a reckoning at the end. (I've read through this - I sound like my dad giving one of his 'don't play with matches' lectures. Yech)
Focused Fire - Pleased to be of assistance. Mime of Death has a certain ring to it. Although it is idiomatically close to 'death jester'. I suppose that Lucius must cost close to US$20, so buying one just to cut his head off would be a bit of an extravagance.
* I've just noticed just how much more meaning there is in the phrase 'pre-fall Eldar' there would be to an American, it must carry some sense of immediacy that is lacking to the English. funny ol' fing, language.

Thats it Zzzzzz, I can do both schemes. Death Jester as mime of death and Solitaire in the traditional Harlequin red&black. Thanks for pointing out the linguistic connection.

The harlequins had a CJ army list at one time. It used the old eldar codex as its base so it suffered the same fate as LotD when its parent codex was updated (it was never an official codex). The old 2nd models of the solitarie are nothing too impressive – the models didn’t look all that different from the other harlequins. For my army I used the two GWS solitaire models as troupe leaders and converted on of my own based loosely on Poe’s “the red death”. Here are some pictures starting with the 2nd book image of a solitarie:

That's my one ! The one at the bottom. Although mine still has his neural distruptor. Which I might keep - he'll only be a Solitare in homebrew games and so the addition of weapon that doesn't exist anymore is no big deal.

Just use the CJ army list in friendly games - the neural disruptor was a weapon that characters could purchase. Many of my models from my harlequin army are converted with disruptors.

I think that the Callidus assassin still has a neural disruptor (though they changed the name somewhere along the line) if you want rules for the gun.

If you mean in terms of rules I think that the 3rd edition rules in the CJ where pretty decent, they just needed a wych like dodge save for all harlequins. For those who never seen the journal's codex harlequins halved WS of opponents and had a 4+ cover save due to their suits. Kisses would wound on a 2+ and insta-kill on 6.
The solitaire would be able to assault 12” but would receive an extra attach for each unused inch. He also lacked a LD stat, any attacks which used LD auto-fail against him.
In terms of models he should look like someone in a devil costume – maybe some Slannesh runes or imagery.
