Subject: What happens when a space marine dies?

It's been bugging me lately. What happens? Do they leave his mangled, gnarled, dead body on the side of the road as they march on? Do they never leave a man behind, even when he's been dead for ten minutes? Do they loot the bodies? Or do they give him a burial, resurrect part of him somehow, dole out the honors with some medals?

Step one: Apothecary removes his gene seed.
Step two: the unit recovers his weapons and ammo.
Step three: If possible, they recover the body afterwards, and render the wargear to the master of the forge to be repaired and dispose of the body according to each chapter's rites.
Grey Knights intern the bodies in tombs under Titan, the Space Wolves incinerate the bodies on funeral pyres, etc.

Ultramarines never die, they are the best space marines ever and each Ultramarine can take on 100 billion carnifexes in close combat naked and blindfolded.

They also take them so that other chapters/chaos marines do not get the Gene Seeds.
Some chapters have things like Grave Worlds where they bury their dead warriors, I know the BA do for sure.

in one of the ultra marines books (the secon one I think) Uriel Ventris worked with the mortifactors (I think) who offered him a place for his skull after he died. He politely refused. It was the first thing they did, going more or less like this, "hi, glad to meet you, we have heard about your reputation and we were impressed, do you want a place on our skull wall over there?"

Actually Progenoid glands come in pairs, one in the neck and one deep within the chest cavity ( Index Astartes 1 pg.5 ).

OK, for the record here is a quick summary of the implants Space Marines have.
- Secondary heart
- Ossmudula ( responsible for strenghening the bones )
- Biscopea ( simulates muscle growth )
- Haestamen ( alters blood )
- Larraman´s Organ ( speeds scarring/healing )
- Catalepsean Node ( regulates sleep and allows extended activity without normal sleep )
- Preomnor ( can eat poisonous materials )
- Omophagea ( "learn by eating" )
- Multi-lung
- Occulobe ( improves eyesight )
- Lyman´s Ear ( improves hearing and filters noise )
- Sus-an Membrane ( allows suspended animation)
- Melanochrome ( regulates skincolor vs exposure to radiation )
- Oolitic Kidney ( filters poisons )
- Neuroglottis ( Improves sense of taste )
- Mucranoid ( improved sweat that can offer limited protection vs vacuum )
- Betcher´s Gland ( spit/bite poison )
- Progenoids ( absorbs material from other implants and creates gene-seed )
- Black Carapace ( allows integration to Power Armor )

Who are they killing to get the extra normal organs and do they synthesize the enhanced organs or does the implementation of the gene seed allow for their growth?

They are not normal organs. Basically the process of creating a new Astartes is a combination of natural growth ( with plenty of hypnotherapy and chemical treatment ) and some parts being added by surgery. At least the Black Carapaces are grown in a bio-vat and then surgically implanted.
The only time when people are harvested to get organs are when the High Lords of Terra sanction the creation of a new Chapter. Carefully screened gene-seed are selected for Zygotes that are implanted in human test-slaves. Think of Aliens and you get the point. Each 2 progenoids created by a slave are then implanted into new slaves and so on, until the amount needed for a Chapter is reached. It takes roughly 50 years to produce the needed 1000 healthy new sets of organs.

They always want to recover their dead, mostly for the geneseed, but also for their power armour, and more importantly the terminator armor, because the construction of all their nifty wargear is becoming a lost art, or so the fluff says.

Does that mean they won't have every single special rule in the entire game in the next codex?

You did notice the SC = special rules treatment of 5th ed codices ( SM + IG ) ?
If your bugs/darkspaceelfs get a 5th ed dex, then there will be special rules too.
Back OT:
Dead Space marines.
Wargear is reclaimed and reused. Geneseed collected to create new Marines. Body either buried or destroyed.
Same goes for vehicles. Everything valuable will be retaken.

Yep. Pretty much anything and everything that can be salvaged, is. It's not unheard of for wargear beyond the ability of the chapter's forges to repair to be sent to an Adeptus Mechanicus forgeworld to see if they can repair it. Every weapon, vehicle, and set of armour is almost, if not completely, irreplaceable. So a Chapter will go to almost any length to have it's destroyed or damaged equipment restored.
The same goes for the marines, with their gene-seed and any undamaged organs being harvested to avoid having to wait for the growth of more. The bodies are then buried either according to Chapter custom, or the tradition of the tribe/clan/gang/etc... of the fallen marine's birth.

If your bugs/darkspaceelfs get a 5th ed dex, then there will be special rules too. That's exactly the problem... We're never on the same page and someone is always getting screwed with the few things that used to make them good. Marines on the other hand seem to always have the advantages (except for certain chapters of course) and always have some special character that confers the latest greatest ability to the entire army. I don't want bugs to have the greatest and biggest codex, I just want everyone to be on par with each other and not have these massive discrepancies.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

First post got it right here.
They Harvest the second geneseed (which is located in the chest, the neck one is harvested earlier in their carrier when mature), take his Power Armour, and do whatever they normally do with the body. It differs between chapters.
