Continuing my Tradition of pointing out Game Breaking oversights in rules, I give you this little nugget from the Space Wolves Codex.

Lord of Tempests: When Njarl is roused, the elements themselves wage war on the foe. At the Beginning of Njarl's turn, roll a D3 and add the turn number to the result (for example, add one to the D3 result on Turn 1, add two on Turn 2, etc.) Refer to the table opposite for the tempests effects that game turn. Only Enemy Models in Njarl's line of sight can be affected by the tempest's effects.
Now, I won't list all the effects (GW Attack Pandas are everywhere) but I will say that a Result of 2 does nothing and 5, 6 and 7+ are effects that happen "At the end of Njarl's Assault/Shooting Phase", so the issue I am about to bring up does not affect them.

The Full wording for the two effects affected by this issue are:
3: Driving Gale: Enemy Models within 24" are at -1 BS this turn.
4: Living Hurricane: Enemy Infantry within 24" move as if they were in difficult terrain.
Now, remember how the rule says the effects are for "that game turn"? Well, what does the BRB have to say about turns?
Page 9 BRB wrote:in game turn 1 a player will take his player turn 1 and go through his Movement, Shooting and Assault phases. Then the other player will take his player turn 1 and go through his Movement, Shooting and Assault phases, thus ending game turn 1. Game turn 2 will then follow
So, as you can see, the Turn Structure is:
Game Turn 1 Begins
Game Turn 1, Player 1 Turn 1
Game Turn 1, Player 2 Turn 1
Game Turn 1 Ends
Game Turn 2 Begins.

So, what does that have to do with anything? Well, if Njarl is on Player Two's army, and on Game Turn 1, Player 2 Turn 1 he Rolls a 3, the Enemy gets to be -1BS for the whole entire Game turn. Oh noes, Game Turn has ended, Game turn 2 Begins! Enemy is no longer at -1BS. Boy, that -1BS during the time we could not shoot anyway sure was scary!

The same with a roll of 4, the Infantry Move as if in Difficult Terrain. Good luck making a move during Player 2's turn. Oh Snap! Game Turn has ended, new Game Turn begins, we walk as normal!

Now, as much as I respect Phil Kelly, this is a pretty big oversight, or if it is intentional, why? To penalise Going 2nd Drop Pod Armies? I cannot think of any reason.

What do you Dakkaites make of this? More proof GW needs to hire a few fans as Proofreaders methinks.

They need to word it like most of the Eldar powers, until the next friendly turn.

Correct, they SHOULD have worded it like the Eldar powers, but clearly it wasn't.

Is this an instance where we can definitely say RAI over RAW... I think so, but "live by the RAW, die by the RAW"

well until GW says otherwise, i'm going to follow the rules.

I didn't like that one anyway. Looks like i'll be going first against njarl whenever I can

If you look at the psychic power Tempest's Wrath, it specifically notes "until the beginning of the Rune Priests next turn..."

So the distinction exists within the codex. Knowing that, I would have to say that the Tempest effects Driving Gale and Living Hurricane are useless if the SW player is going second. There isn't anything I see in the Tempest description to convince me that the RAI of Tempest is for it to be in effect until the beginning of Njal's next turn.

I wonder what they'll make of this in tournaments, obviously it was meant to last to effect the opposing player, but the codex actually states otherwise. Perhaps GW will change it for tournaments?? I'm sure SW players would want this.

why do you say obviously it was meant to last to the end of the opponents turn?

the whole rule is stupid anyway. models should be at a lower bs FURTHER away, the closer they are the better they should see through the storm.

As much as I would love to see it Errata'd, I can kind of see why. Space Wolves have always been good at Drop pods, and Drop pod Assault just made them even better. Being able to Drop Pod, be charged and STILL pump out 3 attacks each is nasty. Going 2nd lets the wolves pick their targets and deny the enemy a shooting phase.

Space Wolves are supposed to be an agressive army. It doesn't seem too far off to believe they have rules that will cause you to want to play first. Keep in mind that those are only 2 out of 7 results that are effected. However it seems that this game holds a significant advantage to anyone who opts to go second, and those abilities are really good.

I honestly don't think the intent was to limit the Drop Pod list.
His price tag includes this ability and I think taking a RAW stance on this is more than OTT.

That is a nice little find. BUT in all honesty, youd be a total jack ass to try and pull that on a SW player. Obviously its "meant" to be till the next SW turn. Granted the RAW dont really work with how its wrtten lol

Yeah, I'm pretty sure around where I play, we will not be using the obviously stupid RAW here.

Having 2 powers that absolutely have no effect on the game and still paying 250 points for that character? Noone should be arguing that this was the intent, thats just stupid.

This is a good catch. Even if it wasn't on purpose, it adds an interesting dynamic to the character. The power is also not useless if you're going second, as the other 'ice chunk' hits or whatever they're supposed to be, still take effect.

I AM a Space Wolf player, and I have been since the age of 11 (9 if you count Reading the books and painting the models as "playing"). I bring it up because it seems a bit odd, but them's the rules and I will live with it.

They do have an effect, but not if you go second. If you get the first turn they work fine.

Yeah, only 2 out of the 6 effects are affected by this

LunaHound wrote:Gwar! i have an older Njal model ( in power armor )

Njarl has by default Runic Armour (2+/5++ Save against wounds caused by Psychic attacks) and has the Option of buying Special Runic Terminator Armour (2+/Normal 4++ save) for +x points, so your Old model is fine

as already said.. its looks not like silly error\miswording.. it looks like a nice kick to drop-pod lists players.. and force SW play aggressively as they kinda intended.

Sounds good to me. A lot of heroes have abilities that become less relevant if you go second (such as Eldrad and the Deceiver).

Less Relevant is not the same as utterly useless. As it is, these two are totally without effect if Njarl is Second with the ONE exception of Mystics.
