With so many big targets for people now will anyone be focusing on the harpy? It looks like it can devistate infantry by swooping over, mining them. Shooting them, then assaulting and always going first pretty much. Plus they are cheap too!. Sure a s 10 can down them but with cover and stuff I think they could be pretty well protected.

S10 isn't as common as people might think, at least not in my experience. From memory, only Tau have ready access to it, and beyond that not every army has it at all!
Twinlink Venom Cannon's are saucy, the Spore Cluster is rather nice, especially against Imperial Guard and Orks, where you can blast a decent chunk out their line with relatively impunity.
Sonic Screech makes him fairly viable against enemy command squads, as you can be fairly sure of striking first, and doing some serious damage.
But yeah, needs a little forethought to get the most out of it, and certainly can't go it alone. Don't think I'll be fielding one without Gargoyles to get in my opponents way and grant that 4+ Cover Save!

I was thinking 2, and then a big unit of gargoyles. That gives him the save and he can leap frog over the gargs and drop his mines.
He sounds like an infantry killing machine.
Now, how to model him..... maybe a carnifex body, wings, and then some sort of tail molded on instead of the legs.

Seeing as it's described as being akin to a Trygon, I'll be working up from the forthcoming Winged Nazgul kit. Sinuous, winged body? CHECK! All it really needs is a head swap, weapons putting on, and some armour plates along the spine to Niddificate it.

I dont think things like power klaws and DCCW will be an issue. With a 12 inch move you can pick and choose your fights pretty easily.

Zoanthropes

you can avoid things in cc wwith your flying movement. Zoanthropes will suffer from shadow of the warp. It's just a crappier flying daemon prine, that's how I look at it

This...
Its not bad... I just wish it had a little more "impact". the twin linked venom cannon is meagre at best, and its close combat ability is pretty suspect.
Oh yeah lets not forget about the "more popular every day" t-fex as a one-shot-one-kill option for anti-harpy.

Dunno if the harpy is viable in really competitive lists. The Harpy is pretty expensive, venom cannon is a bad las cannon and Harpy kicks the bucket to strength 10 like Demolisher Cannon (Vindicators and Leman Russ Demolisher), Manticore, Tau Rail Guns, Zoanthropes and Tyranofexs as well as taking it in the chin from Auto cannons.
Harpy would be fun to convert though.

What are the upsides of Harpies?
- They are a montrous creature
- They move as jump infantry
- They pack a twin linked heavy gun
Have I missed anything?
I don't see a role for the harpy other units cannot fulfill better.

I think if the harpy had Hit and Run it would be able to sucessfully avoid being picked off. It could hide in assaults all game, pop out blast em then get back in assault again.
However Id like to add to your list that if you give it the Stranglethorn Cannon you can make it a pretty devastating anti infantry killer. Also it can split fire by flying over a unit, dropping bombs, then firing at another unit and possibly charging after that.

I think the Harpy would be much more useful if it had a 6" Assault move in addition to it's normal Jump move, ala Jet Packs and Eldar Jet Bikes.

With only 2 attacks, the harpy really doesn't fight which is something of a problem comsidering how many points you're dumping. Also, the fact that it's only rocking 4 wounds and a 4+ save means even heavy bolters and assault cannons will gun the thing down with limited effort.
As much as people like to say S10 isn't that common, alot of IG armies use demolishers, alot of marines use CPT Lysander, alot of orks use a S10 warboss and even a thunderwolf champ with a PF is rocking a 10. There may not be many units, but they commonly appear in lists and all of the above examples either threat long ranges or can ride in something that does.
On top of all that, the Harpy's shooting is really more annoying than truly effective.

When/if you see a Harpy, would you seriously shoot your S10 guns at them? I think a casual drive-by would solve the problem.

Actually its not the battle cannon its the demolisher cannon, but there is also the medusa, manticore, and deathstrike missile launcher, the nightbringer, a furious assualting carnifex. also runour has it that Marbo is s10 but he restrains himself to balance the game.

-Sly Marbo bought a third edition rulebook just to play meat grinder as the attacker.
-Marbo doesn't need an Eldar farseer as an ally; his enemies are already doomed
-Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain
-Sly Marbo still attacks the front armor value in assault, for pity's sake. |

Don't forget it's Sonic Screech. Halving the enemies I when charging is pretty tasty in itself, and when you have arranged thing to exploit it even further (say supporting charging Carnifex) you can swing fights even further in your favour.
Hell, take my favourite tactic with the Pyrovore, suicide Boom-Time.
Harpy and Pyrovore bundle into an Orky horde. All the Orks now strike at I1, and several of them will be attacking the Pyrovore (as he engaged first, forcing them to 'pagga in' on his base) with a mere handful striking at the Harpy. Powerfists, Choppas, Uge Choppas, all striking the Pyrovore at the same time, which should equate to an awful lot of Acid Blood dodging tests on I1. And since wounds inflicted via Acid Blood count to combat, I am supremely confident of the Harpy walking away from that combat having won it extremely comfortably! Nope, not from Oxford I'm afraid!
And been looking through my Bitz, and I think I might replace it's legs with Carnifex Crushing Claws, so it looks like it can perch anywhere.

Shep and Schepp himsilf are usually right about most things, and are most likely right now, but I'll have to dissagree. The new nid list is all about synergy, and target priority. The harpy seems like an easy target and The question was asked what can it do that can't bee done by anything else. It can dupe units. Autocannons will rip it apart unless it has a cover save 5+ from the venomthrope or 4+ from what ever you ae hiding it behind. Give it FnP in the early turns and watch people get mad when what was supposed to be an easy kill is still there. My two kraks.

My former question was indeed honest: I was curious about the upsides of harpies.
So far I have seen some good suggestions for using them (more) effectively:
- With a gargoyle screen
- as anti infantry (with stranglethorns)
- using the screech ability (halving I in the turn the harpy assaults) in combination with another assault letting them hit first.
- he pyrovore was interesting but imo situational at best.
Some things to add:
- The harpy can assault 18". If there is a medium vehicle (read armor 10 or 11) parking somewhere in this area, the harpy can dive in and lash out 3 S5+ 2D6 attacks. At least a thing to consider.
- With this threat range it can assault unit in cover which don't want to be in cc easier than other, slower units. It has assault grenades to boot.
And right you are, even the considered powerful tyrannofex is pretty weak if it's your only monstrous creature in the field. If you have some of them, an unwary opponent may underestimate the harpy+gargoyle-gang that is roaming the flanks...

The Pyrovore tactic is indeed situational, but one I would consider relatively easy to pull off.
Thinking of it anymore, lowering I values to half of what they normal are makes Acid Blood doubly deadly. Main reason I mentioned Orkses is that the Harpy reduces the entire unit down to I1, meaning even more wounds on the Pyrovore, and thus lots more Acid pissing all over the place.
Will build me up a Harpy as soon as the Winged Nazgul is out and let you know how it went!

The thing that I see about the Harpy is you want to charge in with another model helping it. For example a bunch of gargoyles, or run flyrant with it, or a unit of shrikes. The sonic scream ability will help anything that charges in with it. I don't think you would want to play the harpy as a lone ranger.
Remember the combos, this book is all about synergy.
