I like putting this topic into the fluff board just so that we can argue with many more characters, many many.

To be honest while we all I know I love the Templars and I certainly think Helbrecht stands a shot I doubt hes the clear victor. Calgar is def a strong choice, as is Dante (he's been alive for so long that he to have been doing something right).

I would like to say that Pugh from the imperial fists probably stands a fair shot as well.

I'm no sold on Azrael or Kantor

Marneus Calgar because he killed an Eldar Avatar of Khaine(this may be just an Imperial propaganda) and because smurfs always win.
You should create 1 vs 1 thread.

Hail to the creeeeeeeeeeeeeeed!baby Ask not the moot a question, for he will give you three answers, all of which will result in a public humiliation.

Vulcan isn't a chapter master.

Calgar is the awesomsauce, in terms of equipment and training he's got a clear edge. The others in his league would be Dante, who's long life and kick ass equipment also put him up there, and perhaps Seth too, though I can see his wild swings being parried and countered easily by the other two.
Logan is a fairly obvious choice too, and he is really tough.
I think it comes down to the fact that although they are mad tough, Chapter Masters are mostly leaders of men:
Calgar is a tactical genius (no creed jokes) who's equipment and training make him the bee's knees.
Dante is a specialist at surgical strikes and close combat, who leads from the front.
Logan is another kind of tactical genius, well suited to his individualistic troops.

Even Kantor, though not the most impressive combatant, is an incredibly inspiring leader who holds his men together through force of will and personality.
I quite like the different molds that we've been given to work with for our Chapter Masters. In an out and out fight I'd say it's between the Wolf, the Angel and the Ultramarine.

Salamanders Chapter Master is Tu'Shan. Dude dual wields thunder hammers, and can prolly rival Calagar as far as equipment goes

Why has no one mentioned Azrael? He has the watchers on his side . 1 on 1 I don't put him as a favorite but he might make it to semi-finals

Much as i don't like to admit it, Tu'Shan is known as one of the strongest Marines alive, so my vote goes for him. Or failing that, although i even less like it, Calgar

As far as i remember, all the watchers do is...*sound of drums........*.....watch. They don't interfeer, so no advantage there

Grimnar and Dante would be a tier above the others, to be honest.

Grimnar has the resilience, the determination and the spark of brilliance. Dante has the experience, mobility and the (in)famous Blood Angels fury.

Calgar, Tu'Shan, Seth and Helbrecht would be average contenders; not far behind the others, but they'd be falling behind.

Azrael, Pugh, Kantor and Angelos (at least I think he is the Chapter Master, at least according to Index Astartes) would be the weakest of the lot.

^ Truth.

I'd put Jubal Khan with the Kantor, Pugh and Azreal section. It's pretty clear that Kor'sarro is their best hand to hand combatant, with his sword.

The only inklings with this that put me off is Calgar isn't THAT far behind Logan and Dante, though I may be wrong.

I also think Seth's utter barbarity and losing himself in combat, utterly focussed on slaying his foe... given the nature of the Tearers, I put him a little above Helbrecht and Tu'shan.

Speaking of, Tu'shan is 'Strong, even for a space marine', but this aint an armwrestlin contest. Still, beibng a Salamander... he must have some sweet ass gear.

Helbrecht hasn't been High Marshall long enough to really get into it or be a contender. I think High Marshall Ludoldus might possibly have been up there with Dante and Logan. Alas.

Azreal... well, sadly, as much as I love DA fluff, all this 'Inner Circle' nonsense I think has driven Azreal to be a chump. He practically works in a call center. Comparatively, leastways.

Pugh.. has he done anything other than self-flagellate?

Kantor... definatly more of a leader than a fighter. He has Cortez for that.

Angelos... well, depends how much you view Imperial Armour vs Dawn of War. He's third company captain(and goddamn crazy awesome), or Chapter Master who like frontline work. A lot. I'm inclined to put him as the biggest fish in the smallest pool.

Not thinking purely in terms of 1v1 combat they are all good for such different things:

Calgar - impressive gear, but more importantly he rules a massive empire of his own. He could also call upon about 50% of the Adeptus Astartes. He wins on strength of forces

Dante - clearly the most experienced Chapter Master alive and the greatest tactical genius in the Imperium. He wins on tactics

Pugh - totally obssessive and relentless, he will throw everything he has at you until eveyone is dead, and he commands probably the most dedicated (although not the most insane) marines. He wins on sheer bloody-mindedness

Grimnar - just a beast. Alongside his champion Arjac noone stands a chance in combat. He wins on personal strength

Azrael - totally underrated by the looks of it. He isn't the strongest, or the best tactician, or has the best gear but he's sinister as feth. I wouldn't be surprised if come the time of the battle the opposing Chapter Master has just disappeared... plus knowing what he does he is probably the most crazed of all SMs (possibly excluding DC and Wulfen but they're out of control crazy). He wins on fear factor

Edit:
Title is battle of the chapter masters Azrael being a devious bastard would hide in a dark corner until everyone forgot about him & killed the (2nd) last competitor when he is tired & probably wounded.

Azrael vs Calgar Round 1... fight!

Calgar: wuh? where'd he go?

3 hours later...

Calgar: you cant hide forever...(notices both a shadow move and realises both his hands are missing)

I mean one on one I have to say that the more I think about Tu'shan the more I like him as the winner. He distinguished himself quite well at Armageddon both times and the two thuner hammers is frankly fething awesome.

If we were to go far off and rank chapter masters on their feats of leadership then I wouldn't throw Helbrecht out. I mean he was in charge of the allied Imperial fleet in the Third War for Armageddon and seeing as how that war was won in space as they cut off Orkish reinforcements I would say that that's a good notch under his belt.

Tu'shan and Logan Grimnar both have my vote. They're both cunning, brilliant, and incredible warriors.

The problem with Azrael is that his fluff hasn't been re-written for 5th ed. They haven't yet turned him into a warrior-god raging on the battlefield.
