What happens to GW when the oil runs out?
They stop making miniatures.
They make miniatures only out of metal.
They swap to a non-oil based plastic such as PLA.
Other (write in).
Don't really care.

Not sure if this is the right place, could a MOD move if it it isn't right. Also, if this has been done, forgive me, I did a search and nothing came up.

Now, onto business. As you all will probably know, oil is running out. With our forecasted finds slightly lower than expected, maybe us gamers should think of what will happen to the world of war gamming.

Now I'm no chemist, biologist or physicist, but I know that most plastics that are used come from oil. Also, it doesn’t take a genius to notice there are quite allot of plastic models sitting on GW's shelf and probably many other war-game producer’s shelves.

I personally think (and hope) that they will swap to vegetable based plastics such as PLA. Of course, in the short term this will make models more expensive as plastics made from plants are not produced in the same quantities as Biodiesel or ethanol to run cars and are pretty hard to make. But in the long run, I feel that the prices would drop because of this.

What is your opinion?

PS: if anyone knows exactly WHAT GW's plastic stuff is made of I'd appreciate if you could share.

Or they make synthetic oil from coal.

It was the main source of oil for 'Ze Germans' throughout WW2.

When the oil runs out we'll have bigger problems than wondering how GW is going to make my Battlewagons.

Christ, the OT Forum is stupid today.

Agreed. There is only one answer on this poll, the rest are actually traps to catch dumb people.

I 'dont care' now, you 'wont care' then, no matter how much you may like GW.

You know all the empty sprues that you throw in the bin?

They'll start offering a rebate if you send back the empty sprues. It can all be made back into models.

Either that or they'll start hyping up epic/warmaster again!

Boxes will sell for $45.00 dollars apiece (due to a rareity of "good" rocks).

I just thought it would be something interesting to talk about. I do KNOW that I will proabaly have more important things to worry about like if food supplies will last when a famine strikes or if the fossil fuels that remain will turn into some sort of evil zombie things and kill us all and I KNOW that I and probably most of us won't be playing any wargames or even if GW will last that long.

You are right, this is a stupid thread but as I've said, I thought it would be something interesting. Seems most people who spend time around plastic and metal miniatures are pretty serious when it comes to the future. Just shows you what planning your next army can do

Also I second that FITZZ wins this thread.

Does anyone else find it annoying how people complain about how much the world is going to suck without oil yet no one ever invests into alternative technologies such as solar, wind, battery, etc?

Aye. I have an idea for an generator I plan on building in the next couple of months now that I am graduated (A small scale version, more like a battery) that SHOULD provide alot of energy for a long long time, very cheaply too. Hypothetically.

There's a ton of investment into alternative energy. Even if we completely replace oil as a fuel source, the economic transition will be hell for most of the developed world. Not to mention the Middle East.

Well, the Middle East could still find a niche in the economic transformation that will occur. They could gather all that sand, blow it into glass, and make glass miniatures for people to buy.

Umm, you guys are aware there are plastics made out of vegetable material, like corn and soy plastics?

Theres also alot of progress thats been made with algae based synthetics.

Just go to a greenpeace forum and ask them what you can use to substitute for the evil poly styrene and you'll get some answers Im sure

In the mean time- Im going to start hoarding all the cool rocks for future conversions.

We could probably use things like wax and the like to make new miniatures, or make them out of sculpted stone, pewter (gasp!), ect.

Or maybe out of things that come out of/from people!

Hang on a minute, solar energy needs lots of sunlight and the middle east is a GIANT DESERT! screw souvineers I'm making all that sand into solar panels and selling the energy produced!
