Yep. 'Fraid so.

Even though the already absurd GW prices are even more absurdly high in Oz and New Zealand (to the tune of 40%+ higher than the UK and US), we have not escaped GW's latest short-sighted grab at short-term profits, and our prices are going up as well.

Assault on Black Reach is going from $115 to $150, or a 30% price increase. $96 items are going to $110, or a 14%(+/-) increase, and we can assume that the items going up will be similar to the UK and US lists.

I've said it on many occasions, but any Aussie or Kiwi who knowingly buys products locally, when there are so many great alternatives - especially the ones that have free shipping worldwide - is a fool. And even if you're a die-hard GW fanboy, ready to pounce on me for even suggesting buying from a discounter, you can still order from GWUK and GWUS and benefit from a 40% discount simply due to the sheer disparity between our prices and theirs.

So have fun with that.

Forever alone

I saw the price list a few days ago at the FLGS. It's an independant stockist, so the staff are really pissed off with GW. Ten Chaos Marines are now $62. That's insane. A Defiler? Now $103. The manager's been arguing with the GW rep about it and he's already decided to start getting more Warmachine/Hordes/Historical stuff in.

I personally can't justify blowing that much money on 40k/WHFB anymore. If I do buy anything, it'll be from Maelstrom. I'd love to continue supporting the GW players at my FLGS, but I can't afford to. GW are alienating Aussie players, and I feel that Privateer Press is far more deserving of my money now.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Woah !
Not to kick someone who's already down, but even if the prices were reasonnable to start with (they weren't !), the increases themselves are out-of-it. I mean, AoBR going up that much, what the... ?! You'd think they'd want the "starter" set to be easily accessible, but nope...

That's irrelevant.

GW business model is:

1. Find child between 8-14 years of age.
2. Get them to buy the Starter Kit (and some additional items)
3. One Christmas.
4. One Birthday.

After that they don't care if you stick with the hobby. The expensive 'entry' part is done with.

If they do that 100 times a year it's better than 20 people taking up the hobby for life. Putting the price of the starter makes sense because you make more money in the short term, and if you sell 100 starter kits at $150 rather than 100 at $115, you just made $3500 extra dollars and sold the same amount of product.

I feel really bad for OZ brick and Mortar shops.

They are the ones who are really suffering because of this. Pretty soon there wont be any shops to play GW games at. Or at least shops who make a large portion of their Bread and Butter from GW products instead of Magic: the Gathering.

The situation in Australia is worse than it seems. You know I'd never actually seen a BattleTech miniature in the flesh in my life until I went to Singapore? I could not find a store that sold them... or a store, let alone one that sold BTech stuff. Every single BTech item I own has come from over seas. You know I can count the number of non-GW game stores I know of on two fingers, and I've only ever been into one of them?

And yet I have a GW 5 mins up the road from me, which I find hilarious.

I agree, however GW also rely on older, long-term gamers to introduce new blood to the hobby (see friends, younger brothers etc). GW don't advertise; the only way to get new buy-in is from word of mouth and the relatively small chance that someone sees a GW shop and decides to go in. If GW continue to alienate and generally piss off their existing consumer base, then it will end in tears. A couple of years ago, I would have encouraged friends to start; I would not do that now and I sense I am not alone in that.

Go here and never look back. You have a Credit Card? Or a Visa Debit Card (or similar product)? And a valid address (ie. you don't live in a card-board box?)? That's all you near to order from over seas. And these guys won't even charge you shipping.

I don't disagree with what you're saying at all. Remember, I said it was their business model. I didn't say it was a clever strategy or long-term profit sustaining strategy, just that it was that strategy.

I wonder if the rather weird price increase on the starter boxes could have something to do with people buying these boxes (with the small rulebook included) instead of the big new rulebooks, and that they are trying to manipulate those sales somehow.

That, and GW just being their usual fething selves of course.

You certainly aren't. I feel the same way. I got into this hobby with a good friend back at the start of 2nd edition. I witnessed many people come into the hobby as I played at my flgs. But now 40k nights are no more. In fact, nobody plays 40k anymore anywhere around my city. And with prices the way they are, I would be ashamed to admit that I play. Even though I haven't bought anything from GW in 5 years.

No, I couldn't, in good conscience, convince a friend to take up the hobby at this point... It is money down the toilet for models to a game that nobody can afford to play anymore.

I don't know if I can continue buying at these prices... my FLGS is going to sink...

Because Matt Ward didn't write our Codex. Otherwise we would have had Scything Tyrants with Scything Nidfists that can re-roll re-rolls and that can have a bodyguard of 10 Scything Guards and a Scything Prime that could ride in a Scything Pod. Or something to that effect.

Actually Germany gets its increase too, most of it only 25 Cent, but some are as much as 4 Euros. Biovore soon is 26 Euros and books also got quite a stiff price hike.

Should be only a matter of time before rest of europe gets it too.

Is the scale of wages and such in Australia that it matches this pricing scheme?

What is an average salary down there?

A decent apartment to live in is how much a month?

An average home costs...?

The Australian dollar isn't THAT far from the US dollar, right?

What can possibly explain this?

A PS3 game costs $59.99 in the US.

What does it cost in Australia?

Brand new PS3 games can cost up to $120. Minimum wage is about... 15 dollars an hour, I think?

That's what it was when I worked as waitstaff, anyway.
