hello all new guy calling in with a sculpt i did. this was origionally meant to be a true scale terminator. but as with me it went slightly wron. this was mainly the scale of the legs. so i decided to do a "diorama" of a termi. but this is where the fun comes in after i made everything but the arms i realised that their was a resemblence to one guy. so ill post pics and if anyone can guess who it is (pointing out he has no hair because i cant sculpt hair ) will get a cyber cookie.

also a scale shot

a cow and a calf are cut in half, and put into some cases, to call it art, however smart, casts doubt on arts hole basis.

What is that thing on the right in the last picture? I'm guessing something nurgle? Oh and for the main guy probably meant to be russ, could be horus though, looks more horus to me.

Seems to me like you can't sculpt much else either....

It looks, very.... blobby in places. For example it looks like he has some kind of tumour on his right thigh and i'm not sure what's going on around his crotch. It's an okay first try, but too many times I see people trying to do too much too quickly when sculpting, and this has it in spades.

Sorry.

What kind of comment is that? I'm sure he wasn't posting his model negative responses like that..
It is blobby at places, but why not say something like '' It looks good, but I think you should sculpt one section at a time, adding all the details to that before proceeding..''

I thought it might have been horus at first, but I guess it's russ.

So we can only post positive comments now? If I don't like something I will say why, not just post "ItZ Teh SuXXX00rZ Hurr!". The legs look like they're made from dough for example, if anyone says different they're kidding themselves and not being honest. Why is it people want others to be shielded from criticism, constructive or otherwise?

with the legs it is hard to show the detail because they are made out of sculpey, and no lie my camera dosnt seem to want to work with that colour. also a bit of an update i have now completly covered the cape i fur for that "ive killed a wolf and ive draped it over my back" look. also i have worked on the wolf piece which is hanging from the side of his leg

well, while i do not think it is as bad as grimtuff makes it out to be, there is more detail to be added and others to be smoothed out. when you can, post finished pics

I cant help but laugh every time I look at what Im assuming is supposed to be a tabbard in the first pic...

But on a more serious note, look into getting some greenstuff or milliput to sculpt with, and a set of basic tools will help out loads. There are quite a few sculpting tutorials on this site so you can learn the ins and outs of working with greenstuff and achieving your desired effect.

How hard is it to understand that you can give negative criticism without attacking the thing?

Nurgles_warrior - consider mixing some black and white femo (or sculpey 3) into the beige super sculpey... it helps with pics, stiffens it up a bit - moreso if you use femo - and is better for seeing detail. Or, look up sculpey firm, it's 100x better than super sculpey.

Anywho, the sculpt isn't perfect but if you like it, then go with it. Keep practicing and, most of all, take your time. With something like sculpey, you don't even have a cure time to work within, there's no reason to rush it. Focus on one area at a time, get some reference shots if necessary and really double and triple check that you're confident you've done the best you can before you bake it.

To Grimtuff - get real, its obvious the piece needs work, there's no reason to be a dick about it. I don't know of anyone who says, "yea, I really want some un-constructive criticism on this piece." What's gained (other than you convincing yourself that you're increasing the size of the e-penis) from being a total jerk?

Did you use spare bits for the GW parts or did you buy kits so that you could get certain bits? I'm just wondering because I do both so...

Some WIP pics would be great too.

Uh oh, quote war coming on.

There's nothing wrong with criticism so long as it's valid, polite, and constructive. Grimtuff's was exactly that.

Oh, no. This is not a quote war and you are 100% right. I think criticism is a great way to help get a perspective on your work and to help break up the blocks that we get while making our art but, as you have said, "so long as it's valid, polite, and constructive" in which statements like "Seems to me like you can't sculpt much else either...." don't fall under.

No one here started this hobby as if blessed by God himself so that each model he touched was a work of art that would make da Vinci weep from start to finish. We all started some where, we grew with help from those around us, and eventually became better.

You can tell someone they need to work on their skills without invoking the 'greater internet theory'. It's true. I've seen it.

He mentioned that it was a good start for a beginner, what was good, and what could be improved upon. If he just said "Seems to me like you can't sculpt much else either...." and nothing else, that would fall under impolite in my books, but since he went on to point out points of failing and methods of improvement (basically all boils down to patience), I'd give him this one.

As an over all, I would say it's acceptable but still firmly in the realm of douche. It's less 'you're a bad person and should be scorned for this' and more a 'just try and not be such an ass' that we're getting that. That's the real thing that's being said IMHO.

I base peoples 'criticism' kudos on the amount of work THEY post for comments..

0 Gallery images = 0 kudos. It's like taking advice on social 'norms' from say....Hannibal Lector

By the way- Love the work- whilst it may seem a little 'blobby'- as you stated- more detail to come.

great can't wait to See the rest.

BTW i don't want to continue anything but I'm totally with LeBaron and BlackRam on this one.

War gaming is a community and people can't succeed without positive feedback, constructive criticism if fine but don't be a cock and then glorify it, it's just a hobby.

I'd rather people tear my models apart, rather then simply say "that's great."

I always feel insecure when someone says whatever I do is great without some form of criticism.

wow argument or what lol theres no need to argue i took in what he said and i should point this is the first full non nurgle sculpt i have ever done so any help is appreciated. plis i have had a lot worse critisism from a guy when i just started the hobby about 5 years ago

lebaron the GW parts i have had left over from my SW termis and over little bits came from the great bits box.

also i have gone and done the clock and am at this moment (12.13) sanding down the blobby bits and am looking for more space wolve bits so pics should be up later today

Quite right about constructive criticism it is necessary for us all to grow as painters and modellers. But it needs to be fair and balanced, and above all end with a positive note so that the individual feels empowered and motivated to carry on and improve. Blanket praise is as bad as blanket negativity!

(I'm not looking to argue but) I feel I should comment on that just to say, I would rather some one to say ''this could use more spikes'' or ''that needs a little sanding'' than either, this is the happy medium that community wargamers come to.
