Hi all,

I'm not one to post in this section, but having attended Mantic's open day, I'll share with you a little bit of information that I managed to gain. When asking whether Humans would be after Orcs or not, I was told that it would in fact be a sci-fi race instead. Official announcement is expected at GenCon 2011...

What do people think what race they'll make? One that's compatible with 40k, no doubt...

Also, I was told that Mantic is in the process of creating uprgrades for Dwarfs (to make Chaos Dwarfs) and Elves (to make Dark Elves). They didn't say if they'd be metal or plastic though.

Lastly, the Revenant Knights are going to be made from a resin/plastic material - such as the stuff that Privateer Press uses for their Warmachine Warjacks.

All in all, it was an interesting few hours that I spent there, and was well worth my (rather religious) trip to Nottingham. I picked up a regiment of (30) Zombies for just £15! Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures - I knew that I should have brought a camera! Meeting all of the "celebrities" was quite something; especially when you've seen them in pictures but not in person. Ronnie's actually quite similar as to how he is in the videos...

All I can say is: go Mantic!

Cosmic.

I was kind of unsure about doing this, but hey, let's spread the love! Here's the finalised 2010 rules for Kings of War plus the finished army lists, in all of it's hastily scanned glory...

I'm happy that I've got my ghoul horde now. No Elf Scout Horde but oh well... I saw some "Desert Men*" army list that someone had made whilst at Mantic Towers. It had flying carpets and everything! Mantic said that if you submit an army list, they'll give it to the public and let them give feedback for a possible new army/race.

*initially mis-read as "dessert men"!

Troops:
Choc Ice Horde (40 Ice Creams) - 240pts. Upgrade with chopped banana and sprinkles + 10pts. Maple syrup + 5pts.

Inside a pretty, pretty pain cave... won't you come inside?

If they were smart, they'd immediately make a "Dark Eldar" race to capitalize on the new release. Offer everything that GW currently doesn't and take advantage of the proxy market.

Here's hoping they do generic sci-fi humans in space suits and overalls. That. Would. Be. Ace.

Awesome - Mantic really are lining themselves up as a direct competitor to GW rather than just another mini company trying to snaffle a portion of the market and being happy feeding off of scraps.

If their 'Sci-Fi' (read 40K) stuff is anywhere near as good as their Fantasy stuff, then I will be buying some!

Their ranges so far, despite lacking in options and different parts, are great and really up to par with GW.

That doesn't seem smart at all if they want to be a legitimate games company and not just a mini-manufacturer that feeds on GWs leavings.

This is disappointing if true. I like their models, but I'm not interested in buying the ranges they've done so far. If it's going to be a year before we see anything new apart from the orcs...

True, I mean Gencon did just finish a while ago. Still many other exciting products by hundreds of companies do get announced year(s) earlier before release so it is a little of the norm

Yes, generic sci-fi citizens and soldiers would be grand, let them go their own way though, not feeding of the dining table scraps that GW leaves lying about. feth, new alien races would be grand, my RT hunger demands this.

GW exec - Y'know what these kids like nowadays, Rambo, Rambo is huge I tell you.
Jr Exec - Actually sir Rambo was popular 30 years ago, and the Vietnam War ended 40 years ago. Today it's stuff like Halo and Fallout.
GW Exec - Hello and Whiteout? Never hear of them. Those some kind of Atari games those kids playing on their Nintendo gizmos? Never saw the appeal of all that. Now Rambo, he's a man's man. Go make me an army of Rambos.
Jr Exec - Yes master...

To be fair at one point they sold Guardsmen based off of British Soldiers from the various late 1800 colonial wars. Lets see if kids these days even know what those are. Of course there was the steampunk crowd who would clamor over anything with a pith helmet

Praetorians started out as custom casts for a Games Day diorama, Big Toof River or something like that. The visitors liked them so much that they were put up for sale. I'd like to see them make a return though.

I never liked the 2nd edition 'Historicals with Lasguns' look. I really liked the RT 2000 AD look and some of the recent stuff though. Shame they didn't do the Vorastrians in plastic, they were the closest to my vision of what IG should look like.

Vostroyans really are more of an idea of how the Imperial Army looked like during the Great Crusade.

Trying to release Dark Eldar knock-offs would be suicide. The new Dark Eldar models are some of the highest quality kits that GW has ever produced, and to immediately come out with a lower budget knock-off would just make Mantic look like a janky also-ran. I would expect their first sci-fi kit to be something human, probably in the vein of Colonial Space Marines (but with an aesthetic untapped by GW's Cadians or Catachans). This gives people a familiar jump-on point, and allows Mantic to further tap into GW's Guard crowd.

I have to agree here. Mantic, unless it has managed to get it hands on an amazing new sculptor, will not be able to match the new Dark Eldar models.

However, if they manage to make a nice looking Guardsman like model, I may be tempted...

I know some pretty prominent members of the design studio completely agree with you about the Vostroyans vs. the Cadians/Catachans (and all the historicals w/ lasgun regiments, for that matter).

The Perry Brothers kind of went wild with the different historical looking IG regiments back in 1st edition and then unfortunately they've gotten stuck into refining those ideas with each new update. At this point, in order to due Vostroyans in plastic they'd essentially have to dump support for one of the existing plastic IG regiments which would naturally drive players who have those armies into rage.

But yeah, at this point if they could wipe everything out and start over again they would definitely go with something clearly sci-fi and (relatively) unique, like the Vostroyans.

Edit:

And yeah, I'm really interested to see what Mantic comes out with for Sci-fi, since I love what they've done with Fantasy. However I would be a bit surprised to see them release ancillary models like civilians since (to this point) their focus has been solely on producing models that fit into a big army...but it is easier to do generic fantasy then it is sci-fi (IMHO), so who knows, maybe they'll branch out into more general types of models with their sci-fi range.

Are catachans really that popular over others?
