I've been looking at Tau latley, and I saw how many units were in their Battleforce and I was stunned. Compared to the sizes of ALL the other Battleforces, this is the biggest! Does this only suprise me?

Not at all it's a great deal, I did the math and the battleforce holds just under $150 USD worth in models. It's also the only battleforce besides the guard or nids that has a model that can represent an HQ.

Also, although Tau is not a swarm army, it has more units than any other force, even orks and nid's. Why? Is GW supporting Tau?

kroot come in quite large squads. the number you normaly get in a box is 18 but the battle force gives you 12.
all the other stuff is as found in a normal box.

Kroots can beast in close combat. give them a shaper and they get an armor save (5+) krootox help too. They can also infiltrate if im correct.....thats 20 plus guys that wreck in cc 12 -18 inches away from your entire army before the game even starts.

However i dissagree that they have the most units. Guard is not a swarm army and they have 30 units, 12 optional add on people, and 14 different varriations of 3 different tank like items. not to mention guard can use deamon hunters untill the new dh codex comes out

None the less, tau is amazing in cc. Their battlesuits are good if you use them right. Tau also has smart fire...that shoots unlimited range and is drone controlled so it has acute sences.

They're also the only two Armies that have outdated codexes and Battle Forces. One can argue this for Black Templars, but their Battle Force is the generic Marine one. DAs have some pretty good deals too (Ravenwing and the DA Upgrade Sprue).

Ya tau is beast, amazing, and unstopible at FAILING in cc. Kroots are their only savior for cc. Although an hq that i forget the name of has a body guard squad of 8 battlesuits. So 9 battlesuits would be pretty sexy. But if you use him you cant use kroots. So either way....their lacking something.

Impguardpanzies, I just checked my codex and FAQ, and it says that shapers actually give them 3+ armor, upgrades their guns to Str. 4, AP 5, AND they are str. 4 t. 4! Oh, and for 3 points a model, you can get stealth fields, so your trees give you a 2+, and people have to roll for night vision.

No you aren't. The shaper only gives them a 6+ save & the krootox prevents them from infiltrating. So let's see a shaper costs 28 points? 7 for a kroot & 21 for the upgrade. Then you pay an additional point per kroot for an ork armor save. Useless. Also the krootox uses a rapid fire weapon & prevents the squad from infiltrating, bad. You're better off sinking those extra points into some I5 kroot hounds.

I do believe he was joking, as was I. Oh, I iirc, you cannot have 15 kroot hounds in one squad, but your point is valid.

Farsight is the guy you're thinking of. RAW wise, you can only take him in an army of 1500 or more, although given the proferation of Characters in other codexes, I wouldnt be surprised if most people just let you use him to balance it out. He's basically a Monstrous Creature in Close combat, and holds the only Tau weapon capable of ignoring armor in close combat. His stats is also more comparable to that of a SM captain than a Shas'O and is the only decently competent CC combatant you can get with the Tau.

I knew you were joking Mica, not so sure about the other guy. Also I never named how many kroot hound I just said "some", you'd still have points to spare.

Unfortunately the Kroot Hounds are in the uncomfortable position of being more USD than points.

6000 points IG, Leviathins 8th company, (store regiment) 60% painted
4500 points Empire 80-90% painted!
2500 Ogres 2% painted

2500 Points Isstavan Drop site massacre Iron Hands (still waiting for dat codex)
I managed to play a 1750 point game with minimal proxieing on the first day DE came out. go me!

Okay, about the kroot.

In one Kroot Carnivore Squad you are allowed:
.Between 10 and 20 Kroot
.Between 0 and 12 Kroot Hounds
.Between 0 and 3 Krootox Riders

They have the infiltrate special rule(which is voided if you have Krootox Riders in the squad), and add +1 to their cover save IF they are in a wood or jungle, and do not have to roll for difficult terrain, they can move the whole six inches.

So that enables you to infiltrate a CC squad of 32 models that could potentially have a good cover save and don't need to roll for difficult terrain as they grit their teeth and prepare for a meat feast.
The only drawback is how much they physically cost.

I'll put the prices in USD and GBP:
A box of 16 Kroot costs $38 - £20
So that's going to have to be $76 - £40 right of the bat, unless you pick up another 4 models else where.
2 Kroot Hounds costs $14 - £8.50 so that will be $84 - £51
for the 12.
So in total, if you buy it all from GW, it will cost you $160 - £91

So ermm, yeah. Lottery, anyone?

If you ask me the annoying thing is that Kroot come in boxes of 16.

I recently purchased a tau battleforce and was very impressed with it, Personally for my tau id rather have more fire warriors, But there does have too be a good mix. I also think the necron battleforce (my next project i think) is a good deal.

The necron battleforce if you had to buy each model idividually would cost you £99.166666, quite a large saving!

Someone said Tau and Necrons are the only non updated codices left. Wrong. Black Templars, Daemon Hunters, Witch Hunters.

As far as the Battleforce the Tau and Necron boxs are pretty close as the best in my opinion. Tau do have alot in their box in terms of usefullness and it's only the amount that makes it better then the Necrons because EVERYTHING in the Necrons box is useable and ALOT cheaper then buying seperatly. This is why I bought myself both a Necron and Tau battleforce to add to my current collection as an early xmas present

That being said the Apocalypse box for Necrons was hands down the greatest deal GW has ever done.

Mattieu~~~~ It's not that eldar are bad, it's that they require a lot of intergration between units. Also, that doesnt prove anything other than GW has a huge hard-on for marines, and, given the option between making a xeno the best psykers or making a marine the best psyker, they will 9 times out of 10 choose the marine.

GW have that much tau in the BF to make up for the fact that they are terrible.
and it's not the best bargain GW has. That title belongs to the DA chapter upgrade kit. £12 for 6-9 complete SM and a load of extra wargear and decorations.
