Whether it's to your uninterested spouse, or your parents who don't understand, how do you justify spending alot of money on what seems like a piece of plastic to everybody else?

"I've missed over 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times I've been trusted to take the game-winning shot . . . and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." The great, Michael Jordan

the easiest thing to do is budget a certain amount of money per month to be spent. Also, spend an appropriate amount of money. If you are making 7.50 an hour, you shouldn't be spending 1000 a month on models.

No spouse to explain myself to at present (though started seeing someone, and told her from the word go about my obsession with toy soldiers!), my dad collects anyway, and my mum even has some gobbos and orks!

And failing that, "it's my money!" is the final word!

I always point to the Ebay auctions that are hundreds of dollars, and let my finacee know that this hobby is an investment. Also, one game of Warhammer lasts about 2 to 3 hours.

A movie for 2 w/ refreshments is alway 30 bucks +

So If I play 5 games, that is 150 bucks worth of movies.... I have spent far more money on eating out and going to movies than I will EVER spend on Wargamming.

Pffft. Overall, I spend less on miniatures than I do on:
1. Booze. I'm a lot better now, but when I lived in Dublin this was easily double or triple what I spent on gaming and other entertainments.
2. Fancy food and eating out.
3. Transport/Being disorganised (still haven't gotten used to needing to book my trains miles in advance to avoid paying stupid amounts of money.)
4. X Box/TV/DVDs/Cinema- and miniatures give me a lot more hours of entertainment than any of these bar my X Box (which is pretty super awesome value for money and has eaten lots of hobby time recently )

Nobody has ever really questioned it, except superficially, and I just tell 'em it makes me happy and I can afford what I spend. Which is the truth!

I look at the price of new video games for one, $50 bucks for a new game? I would rather have the minis for my money. Plus there are plenty of expensive outdoor hobbies, like hunting, skiing, hiking etc. As for indoor hobbies, computer and video games, card games, poker, etc, once again there are some expensive hobbies other than table top gaming.
In any case as I put it to my friends some of which have who's texting charges can buy a new army, put the hobby in perspective of other hobbies and it is about normal really.
My two cents at any rate.

I don't. I have multiple hobbies, as does my partner, and we're hardly about to start 'challenging' one another if we spend money on them.

Plus, she thinks the O&G figures are cute, particularly the goblins, trolls and squigs, and so approves when I buy those - hell, she got a unit of squig hoppers as my joke-present this Christmas, and can't wait to paint them

I don't, because I don't have to. Hobbies are inherently a luxury purchase, and so someone is going to inherently view it as wasted money, be it models, videogames, golf, cars, horses, whatever. The only time it's an issue is when you start justifying to _yourself_ how much you're spending.

All hobbies are expensive, most of them are a waste of money too.

Unless your into coin collecting or automobile restoration the chances are your hobbies will never make you money. But they all are necessary for a sane mind.

I justify it like I justify my tattoos, these models are unique to me, and I'll have them for long enough to make it worth the investment. But from the outside looking in, well we all might as well be junkies

I point at the two dozen pairs of shoes she has.

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity......

This is it right here. Da Boss nailed it too.

Virtually everyone spends money on luxuries and hobbies to keep themselves entertained. Miniatures gaming is downright cheap compared to building RC cars or airplanes, keeping & riding horses, golfing, skiing, snowboarding, going to music concerts, and many other hobbies. It's also darn cheap compared to going out drinking or eating meals out. Miniatures give you a considerably higher dollar/hour of entertainment return on your investment, and are a concrete thing which you can keep forever and potentially resell if you really want to.

This thread makes me want to go out and buy more minis so bad... but I have so many already, most of which I haven't used, a lot of which are in stages of half assembly, very very few (I can count the number on one hand) are actually fully painted....

I don't feel a need to justify it.

I also don't spend "large" amounts of money.

I keep my spending reasonable for a hobby and our incomes.

Still, we dont (and can't) have children, don't smoke or gamble and only drink occasionally. What else are we going to spend money on?

Hello,
As a painter and concerned modeller I would like to help you, I will get rid of that nasty collection of half painted and assembled models for you. It will just cost shipping to my addy.

Regards,
Carl

No, spraying three colors on your minis does not count as painted! 5k+

My answer in a nutshell, I would much rather buy models instead of using money on booze, which is a consumable.

I am single and I earn well over £50,000 a year, with plenty more promotions likely in the near and medium-term future. I am also an only child, and will be the sole inheritor of a house worth nearly half a million and whatever cash my parents don't spend in their old age.

As long as I keep up my mortgage payments, I don't have to justify jack to nobody.
