So yeah, any good suggestions?

I'd be very pleased if could find something with an equal feeling as Elfen Lied, or, dare I say, Saikano (best anime, EVER, though don't watch it if your easily depressed)

Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Howls moving castle, Naussica and the Valley of the wind(My favorite)... Pretty much anything steampunkish. ANything else and you'll probably find some disgusting rape scene or something, anime being anime. Okay yes that comment was a bit trollish.

But Naussica and the Valley of the Wind is AWESOME. Seriously, though, it seems like most of the anime movies I've seen and liked (Quite few) have been steampunk.

I second the Nausicaa suggestion, but please please please make it the uncut one. Not the bastardised version that was originally released in the US.

Pretty sure that hasnt seen the light of day since its release back in the 80s. The Disney DVD is proper.

Since you said Elfen Lied, I'll recommend Berserk.

Yes, that was the one I was talking about. Lent it from a family friend (don't know why he had it) and couldn't stand it. Later watched the real one when my brother got it out at the video store and loved it.

I'm going to recommend Last Exile. It's not much like Elfen Lied (okay, it's nothing like it) but it does tick the "steampunk", "airships", and "beautiful animation" boxes.

Didn't they stop doing the 'Edited' dvds when the market collasped a few years ago?

Most anime is pretty tame these days anyway. I miss the 80s, overly detailed mechs and nipples everywhere.

Yeh, but the older stuff is still released locally under R - Restricted and is still largely editted.

Didn't notice you where in Oz till now.

Your probably better off just importing the US releases of most things, region hacking a player shouldn't be too difficult, and Funimatation seems to re-releasing alot of older stuff lately in cheap boxes.

Heres hoping for a Urusei Yatsura re-release so i can pick the 5 volumes I missed before Animeigo dropped it :/

Mezzo Forte is an exception. The "Cut" version excludes sex-scenes that, while very well animated, don't add anything to the story and in my opinion makes it "less watchable".

I second the Berserk suggestion, the anime is awesome (sadly, the manga is still unfinished), and it's getting a movie and possibly a new series/OVAs.

As for other anime I can recommend... Hell, I like a bit of everything. Trigun, Escaflowne, Evangelion, Code Geass. Hunter X Hunter is very nice too, but like Berserk, the manga is unfinished (and I doubt it will ever be - the author as been going in and out of hiatus seemingly forever. But I guess I'll re-read the last few manga chapters now, it's really awesome).

Wow, you guys managed to name not a single anime I haven't seen yet XD

I'm looking for something not everyone knows about, there have to be some lost pearls out there.

Also, spirited away was boring.

His and Her Circumstances, it's actually funny/sad/teenager/yadda, but still nice (in some places you can see the connections with Evangelion).

Gungrave you've prolly seen... I have to check my external drive for the names of the anime I've seen.

If you're bored, you could check out some mangas. Vinland Saga is ongoing, but it's great. HxH Manga, too.

Black Lagoon. Good action, great character development (none of this "whiny teenager becomes super saiyan at the end" nonsense), great dialogue (lots of profanity though), and by the end of the series I was left with the feeling of "I'm gonna watch it again."

Maybe you hang out with immature women. Maybe you're attracted to immature women because you think they'll let you shpadoink them.

Speed Grapher might stretch your itch for gratuitous violence and tragic back-stories. That's about the only non-mainstream one I can think of. Or maybe Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, which I haven't seen myself but I've heard it's gory and sad.

I will second Last Exile.

The story kind of drags as serial anime often do, but my god it's a gorgeous series.

Speaking of which, my edition is the Pioneer Geneon edition. Has anyone redistributed the Geneon titles since they stopped in late 2007? Did ADV ever become solvent again?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ahh just saw that you are looking for more non-mainstream titles.

Colorful could be considered fairly mainstream I suppose, but still seems pretty darned esoteric by most people's standards.

Catsoup on the other hand... now there is one that is not mainstream and could only be called "Hello Kitty meets and acid trip".

It really is quite good.

Funimation has been releasing alot of Pioneer/Geneon's stuff on DVD & Bluray. I believe Last Exile is coming out soon on Bluray, and a second series in Japan later this year!

I can't really offer up any suggestions that are similar to the titles cited in the first post, however if you're just looking for some good shows: Moribito, Emma, Eden of the East, Tatami Galaxy, Nodame Cantabile, Honey & Clover, Spice & Wolf all come to mind. Again, none of those titles are at all like Elfen Lied but if you're in the mood for something different they're all solid titles that are worth a shot. Assuming you haven't seen them before.

As an otaku you will have already seen Bleach, Death Note, Gundam and Ghost in the Shell, yes?

I'd recommend FLCL, Fate Stay Night and Sengoku Basara.

FLCL is nice and weird, Fate Stay Night is just plain entertaining - only 24 episodes or thereabouts, but a complete story and lots of OTT battles.

Sengoku Basara ties in some historical elements but also has samurai on horses that can scale sheer walls and a kunoichi with a bigger chest than Lolo Ferrari. That's not why I watch it, of course.

Well if you want a long ongoing series, than I suggest Bleach.Kind of a samurai daemon hunter series,it has pretty intense fighting, awesome characters and a great storyline.

If you want shorter series,I suggest Outlaw Star,or Cowboy Bebob. Both are kinda like Firefly,spaceship,rag-tag crew, similar stories too.

I watch a show called Korewa Zombie Deska. The main character was killed but a nercomancer revived him,now he wants to find his killer, plus he has to fight monsters, all the support characters are girls that also live with him.
It's kinda pervy, they say dirty things and the main character has to wear little girls clothes to fight evil,so don't say I didn't warn you if it offeneds.

Also High School of the Dead, classic zombie survival.
But that is also pervy, but just with underwear flashes and "bouncing",it's actually more comidic than offensive. But still just a heads up.

One that isn't pervy in Fairy Tale.
It's about a Heros Guild, and the members that go around a magical world doing quests. Main character is a fire mage with a talking cat named Happy(which is the smart one of the group),and a girl who has magic keys that summon Gaurdian Monsters.Lots of fun support characters too,the leader of the guild is a tiny old man, their is one woman that drinks a room-sized bucket of beer in one sitting.
