Personally I like everything I've seen so far, in my opinion if they would just re-do the skeletons then I think the Tomb Kings would have some of the best models in the WHFB range regardless of the fact that not all of them are plastic.

I love the Sphinx model and the fact that it's plastic makes it even better. I plan on buying 2, 1 will be used for modeling to makea War Sphinx and a Bone Giant. The second will be used as a source of bits for other conversions as well as a showcase model itself or maybe a terrain piece. Then add on the number of bits that come with the model and that you can make a plastic Tomb King and I'd say it's a pretty good deal.

I don't think it's hard to imagine that GW took a page out of the Necron page when they made the Stalkers and they look awesome, the only thing I don't like about the Stalkers is the head of one of the models that looks very clunky and too large. Then you have the the Necropolis Knights, besides sounding like a great unit rules wise (monsterous cavalry, 3 poisioned attacks, killing blow attacks etc) it's pretty much the same basic model it just has a Tomb Guard on top.

Speaking of the Tomb Guard the new plastic Guard are great looking models, I'm not sure why they appear hunched but that's a small thing to complain about. I may even use the new plastic Tomb Guard to represent my skeleton warriors (since the new ones haven't been done yet) and use my old Tomb Guard to represent actual Tomb Guard.

Now if GW where to take some of the concept art used in Warhammer Online: Land of The Dead and use that as a basis for their further TK releases (like the Tomb Scorpian) I would be in heaven. That being said the only thing I really don't like about the TK is their price, thankfully I've had a TK army for awhile so I can buy some of the new shiney things to add to my army instead of buying a whole new army. But when it comes to WHFB GW just seems like a bunch of money grubbers lately, they change the rules of the game making it so that armies are more effective if they're larger so players have to buy more. Then they decrease the amount of models per box and up the price for those models so you get less for more. But like I said I already have a good sized TK force so this dosen't affect me in this scenario.

All in all I like the direction that GW has taken the Tomb Kings and can't wait to see what else they have.

I'm not mad about them, but those snake riders are ace! I don't plan on getting any though. On another note, anyone else think its logical that WE or OK come next for the update? I hope so!

Oooooooh my god. The new monstrous creature - the Warsphinx/Necrosphinx - has become my favorite model. EVER.

I don't play Fantasy, but I will be buying that model just for the sheer awesomeness.

I like the sphinx model as much as I like the Skaven Screaming Bell, which is to say a lot. The rest I'm ambivalent on, I like the undead giant cobra centaur dudes, not so much the snake surfers.

The models for the most part look nice, though I don't like the look the rules seem to be taking. For the most part from what I've seen, WHFB has been fairly balanced, but it looks like codex creep is now making its way to fantasy as well. Maybe once the book comes out we will see that everything is horribly expensive to balance out, but just seeing some of the rules so far, they will just slaughter.

It's difficult to speculate without all the points as you said, but they're still a pretty fragile army really. Not particularly robust... Sphinx aside.

^Agreed, and personally I don't like how GW is making all of the new codices hardback. I don't even really like the cover art, but it's supposed to have ALOT more fluff which is always a plus for me

I like all of the models, a lot. I think they are gorgeous.

My problem is that it seems like the focus of the game has really wandered. Is the game supposed to be about maneuvering and tactics and large blocks of troops, or massive monsters and mega-spells? Does every army need to have Monstrous Cavalry and Monsters? Given that we HAD Ushabiti, and Tomb Scorpions, and Bone Giants, do we need MORE and bigger monsters?

I have nothing against the sculpts. They are just spectacular. I am just not convinced that the Tomb Kings needed a ton of new constructs. I think they would have been better served by updated Skeletons, Skeleton Heavy Cavalry in plastic, plastic Ushabti, and plastic Bone Giants. It's increasingly seeming like that "minimum 25% of Core Troops" is basically a bland requirement with tons of monsters on top.

What makes Ogres special anymore? Why are Giants now wimpy, relatively speaking? We have monsters that Bloodthirsters need a 6 to wound?

The cobra riders look mighty fine, I just hope (wish) you can (could) take the cobras without the riders, as the riders look kinda goofy.

The Sphinxes are both mighty awesome, though I must say the Necrosphinx is my favorite of the two.

"I have concluded through careful empirical analysis and much thought that somebody is looking out for me, keeping track of what I think about things, forgiving me when I do less than I ought, giving me strength to shoot for more than I think I am capable of. I believe they know everything that I do and think, and they still love me. And I’ve concluded, after careful consideration, that this person keeping score is me." -Adam Savage

Nope I did it myself, awhile back though just updating my armies with the new units/models and doing some conversions here and there. Like now I really want to do a Tomb Scorpion based off of the one from Warhammer Online: Land of The Dead since it better fits the look of the new models.

Like I've been saying, it's going to come down to how their magic works. Skeletons are still junk (right??), but if you replace as many skeleton units with T4-8 (!) monstrous things, then back it up with strong auto-cast spells or a strong lore with dice generation abilities and/or a strong attribute, you might just get around that unfortunate fact

I'm hoping that they are middle-to-strong, and that these sphinx cost significant points. Personally I don't need another OMG BROKEN! army in the pool, nor do I need another severely undercosted monster either ("Necrosphinx, meet Hydra and her boyfriend, Hellpit": Hellpit extends a pseudopod in greeting; Necro blankstares, decapitates the abomination, then takes Hydra back to his shiny gold cadillac ...)

Phototoxin wrote:£25 for 10 tomb guard is sick.
Hypothetically the kit comes with a small mountain of extra bits, with the possibility of swapping them onto the current skeletons and making them suck less. Sort of like the Dark Angels upgrade frames they made waaaaay back before every space marine got its own sculpts. Not sure that that justifies the TG cost or the skeleton suckiness ... but it might be something.

Well so far most people like the way the TK are going so far, kinda surprised that there are people who hate it. Anyone willing to explain why?

I like what I've seen so far. I particularily like both snake units, though from the rumours they both seems to be overpriced for what they do. But that won't stop me getting some, if I love the models, I'll still field them The sphinx is quite nice too, though the paint job make them look way too brand-new. If anything, those new units have a lot of conversion potential for some theme-heavy stuff!

Fantasy armies - Retired (Tomb Kings, Vampires, Empire, Chaos Warriors/Daemons, Dark Elves)

Tyranids army - Ever evolving, but about 10k pts
Custodes - 3,500pts (Fully painted yay!)
Thousand Sons - 4,000 pts
Eldar - 3,000pts

I was thinking about starting a Tomb Kings army a couple months ago, because I thought the Incantation system looked fun. Heard the news about the upcoming release and decided to stand pat until I could find out if that system was going away or not. While I still havent seen solid info on the new book, the fact that they are getting a deck of cards as a new release leaves me skeptical that the Incantation system is surviving the new edition.

Also, the FotM aspect of this hobby (and the way GW encourages it with unapologetic codex creep) is one of my biggest pet peeves, and I didnt want to look like a bandwagon jumper. Plus, the new figs (specifically the $42 box of 10 Tomb Guard and the goofy looking Necropolis Knights) are kinda making me glad I held out. For that matter, while the War/Necrosphinx looks okay, it's no Arachnarok IMO.

Pretty sure its been confirmed that their lore is just like normal magic, they can also take lore of light or death.

That's too bad. Cant say I'm excited that rather than fixing what's broke and maybe adding a couple new toys to boost sales, they've homogenized the faction by taking away one of the cool things that made them unique and added some toys I'm not super-crazy about...

Oh well.

imo, invocations would be pretty broken in this edition if redone....

They throw one dice at an invoke, and even if they roll a 1 it goes off.

However if you roll one dice to try to dispell it and roll a one or two your screwed.

In addition to the updated statlines and point costs, keeping invocations as they were would be OTT imo.

I hate this talk of band-wagoning. When a new car comes out people don't get bitched out for buying it. People buying Pepsi Max didn't get moaned at for buying it when that was released... This is just a new product with new possibilities.
